Not Me Episode 4 Music
Flares - Life in Colour
We immediately jump in with Flares as Sean is experiencing a nightmare. Stretch time but I guess if you wanted you could read this as Sean subconsciously sending up a signal flare for help.
Last Night, Last Night, Last Night - Well Then, Goodbye
This kicks in as Black is leaving Sean in the flashback; this could be a tie in with the 'Last Night' title as in it's a memory Sean is recalling that might feel like they just happened OR there could be a tie with the band name being 'Well Then, Goodbye' as Black very unceremoniously leaves Sean to his fate. (Either way, my ears don't particularly like this song, the reverb gives me ickies. Thank you misophonia.)
To Whom It May Concern - Rap Against Dictatorship (ft. Liberate P, Nazesus, and GSUS2)
The first time I saw the dance scene I got goosebumps and I could tell the show had done something big here. Allow me to infodump a bit. Rap Against Dictatorship uses their platform and their music to bring attention to the ongoing state of Thailand under military rule, especially during election time. They were founded in 2017 and released their first single in 2018. After the release of their single the members were threatened with arrest by police who later backpedaled after the music went viral and the group gained the support of the public. In 2019 they were awarded with the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent* at the Oslo Freedom Forum. During the 2020-2021 Thai protests one member was arrested with other pro-democracy activists and later charged with sedition. Their music is often censored in Thailand due to it's anti-goverment and anti-monarchy message. (I love them so much, your honor.)
*Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent is an award established in 2012 by the New York City-based Human Rights Foundation (HRF). According to HRF President Thor Halvorssen, the prize recognizes individuals "who engage in creative dissent, exhibiting courage and creativity to challenge injustice and live in truth"
Downloaded Truth - Marten Moses
As White and Todd are discussing Eugene and Todd is persuading White to reach out to her this song comes in. It could be just a neat song, it could be that White found this downloaded little piece of truth in the video on Black's phone.
Crushed by A P O L L O
I'm fairly certain this, or a remix of it, is what is playing as White is on his phone texting Eugene? I know I've heard the song before and I have it stashed somewhere, Crushed sounds very close but I can't tell if it's quite right? Sometimes they put a little filter over the song or play an arrangement that's midway through the song and it trips me up a bit. If it isn't Crushed then it's very likely another Apollo piece (though none of the ones on that album, I checked.)
As Gram and White discuss the aftermath of the fire we get a little more Downloaded Truth.
As Nuch, Gram, and White all meet in the garage a bit more of Crushed's beat plays in the background.
3 (Instrumental Version) - Bambi Haze (ft. Lu Ni)
Just as White is hugging Eugene and trying to placate her this song comes in. There are truly no connections to be made here, no leaps or stretches to be found. (Though both this and several of Marc Torch's songs are on Epidemic Sound, a host for a lot of royalty free music, so this could be where GMMTV sources a good chunk of their music.)
Closer - Morphlexis
As Eugene climbs in White's lap this song plays and it could be a nod to Eugene wanting to be closer to Black or that she is physically closer to White, again, if we want to make some big stretchies.
When Eugene wakes up we're gifted with another appearance from Tripping over Danger which also wraps up the episode.
thank you so much to everyone who reads these! i recommend checking back at some older posts as i have made some updates (sometimes i miss songs and realize it later.) i promise to make a masterpost of these once we're done and i'll put together a little list of my favorites!

devlog 12/25/23
fuck it i'll do this in an organized way bc it's easier for me to keep track of also. maybe it'll be interesting maybe it won't.
so in terms of the gameplay:
the entirety of the day 1 cycle is complete and i don't anticipate needing to update the tileset at this point in time so that's all set. i've got the day to night cycle down too.
i'm about three quarters of the way through day 2 and right now i'm working on writing the script for the results of the cooking segment. i'm not going to add them to the actual game yet for the sake of playtesting but at this point i really need to write down the recipes that the player needs to follow and figure out the recipe for day 5.
actually ive been making this whole game with just a vague daily outline and no script at all and that was absolutely a bad idea but it's not like i knew better. should script out everything! maybe work on the script in tandem with day 2.
in terms of the art:
i've finished the kitchen tileset for day 3 and will be colouring the kitchen tileset for day 4. i still need to make illustrations for several scenes + a few sprites and facesets but i'm not expecting to do that until all of the development is done.
i'm not even gonna think about music until i've scripted out the last day so i can get the mood right.
this is taking way longer than i thought it would but i am visibly making progress so i'm not particularly bothered by it. the last two days (6 and ???) should be easier since the player has less to do.

🌈🎀🧿 for the really cool writer ask game please! p.s. SO EXCITED for that women of house black fic, that snippet! that premise! narcissa and drarry!!!
Thank you so much!! I am so excited too! There is so much I want to say but I will save it for the fic itself. But in the meantime, thank you so much for the questions!! ❤️❤️
🌈 is there a fic that you worked *really fucking hard on* that no one would ever know? maybe a scene/theme you struggled with?
I'm so glad you asked this because yes, there is! And in fact, I am finally getting done with it in time for @harrypocter's festival of colours fest! So I can't reveal too much about what it is, BUT, the thing I struggled with the most is getting the representation right.
I started this fic sometime last year as one of the first ever things I wrote, but discontinued it because it was getting too big of a project. Not length-wise, I just felt out of my depth. It's a story set in India, and the thing about this country is that it isn't homogenous. It's diverse, and everyone belongs to different communities/castes. And some communities have, historically, oppressed other communities, the socio-economic effects of which are still extremely prevalent today. So when you're attempting to tell stories that come from outside your community, there is an obligation to get it right - especially when the power dynamics of caste come into play.
The story isn't my story, it's an adaptation and I will be crediting the original one, but I've been taking a lot of pains to ensure that I get it right. I may make mistakes (although I sincerely hope I have not) and I'd also like to disclaimer this by saying the research that has to be put in when taking from stories outside one's community, and crediting the community for it, is the bare minimum that everyone should do. (Along with, of course, not profiting off of it - hello elephant whisperers). So yes!! That is something that I'd been struggling with, and I thought no one would get to see it, but now they are, and I'm really excited about it <3
🎀give yourself a compliment about your own writing
This is so sweet gahhh thank you!! One thing I really enjoy about writing is the ideation that comes before it. I've found that I'm very quick to identify stories. I feel like the world is full of stories - in academia, in sports, in activism, in law etc etc etc. I have the "oh this would make a great story" thought so many times a day (hence my ever-growing pile of plunnies) and I love that that is something I can do!
🧿what steps do you take to not take things personally if a fic doesn't do well, or if your writing/posting/sharing experience isn't going how you'd like it to?
This is a really interesting question! I used to write with the objective of reaching as many people and getting as much feedback as possible. That has faded over time, which is why I'm branching out more into gen fic and rarepairs and things like that. But also! I cannot deny that I enjoy engagement and all the wonderfully kind comments people leave me. They make my day! And I'm privileged enough that almost all my fics have done reasonably well in terms of the sharing experience.
But even if a fic doesn't do well, it's balanced out by the feedback I get from all my wonderful betas. Particularly you and @nanneramma!! And your feedback is especially special to me because of how much I respect and admire and love both you and your writing! That kind of gives me the satisfaction of having written something good, even if it doesn't do "well" as such. I also reread my work a lot, and if I come across a particular line or phrase that I really like, that definitely boosts my confidence.
I don't really have a set of rules or habits that I fall back on when a fic doesn't do well. I kind of just take it in stride and focus on the next one? The best part of writing is writing, and soon, I'm so immersed in writing the next fic and enjoying the process that I forget to feel bad about the previous one not doing too well.
This is a wonderful community and people are always cheering on other people and I always feel like there's so much love to go around! So that's mostly how I deal with it all.
Thank you so much for the asks!! <3

It's always a nice surprise to see people benefitting from the work @jalaguy and I did for the TFWiki community blog! While Sonic comics are mostly outside my wheelhouse, I did read and enjoy TKP/Bobby's recent review of The Lara-Su Chronicles.
Figured I'd take this opportunity to publicly pull back the curtain a little more on my original reading guide, because the curation of it took place entirely on Discord. I'd gotten frustrated by a lot of extant reading guides online, which were all heavily influenced by the absolute dogshit editorial choices made by Andy Schmidt for The IDW Collection: mainly, a painfully chronological approach which frontloads a bunch of boring and bad prequel material that readers have zero context for, simply because it's set earliest in the timeline. That's an insane way to read comics.
Most lists would just kind of throw out a list of individual issues with little (if any) colour commentary, implicitly asserting... "trust me, I've done the research!" But as someone who's read all the material, you can see when they clearly haven't.
And the thing is, IDW's Transformers comics really just are that complicated. They were the product of many hands. Not everything fits together. It's not a single grand unifying vision with a consistent narrative thread. What few official attempts at curation were made by IDW (mostly in the form of trade paperbacks) are actively misleading. The wiki itself gives a determined reader some help in working out how it all fits together, but also... not really.
So my sleight of hand with the TFWiki's reading guide—and the use of the phrase "reading guide" instead of "reading order" was deliberate—was basically to not actually give you the reading order at all. Instead, it's a comprehensive overview of the salient, relevant information about how all these books relate to one another. The intention was that an engaged reader would follow along, and at each turn, make that active choice of... "am I skipping this one?"
But since its release, I've had a lot of feedback—often indirectly, like this, with people taking that next step of actually applying this information to bash out a reading list—that most readers really would just rather a list of the good comics to read. Nobody wants to read fucking M.A.S.K. So increasingly I have been giving thought to maintaining the comprehensive overview, while also having a suite of curated reading lists. Like, compare that article, to this recent image I threw together for someone on twitter who just wanted to read More than Meets the Eye. One of these is obviously much more helpful than the other.
Anyway, now it's time for me to play spot-the-difference with Bobby's list.
Obviously all the Hasbro Universe stuff is missing. Good choice, it's almost all irrelevant and bad.
New Avengers/The Transformers is omitted without mention. Extremely based choice. Spotlight: Ramjet is thus moved into publication order, which is fair.
Egregious extra stuff like "Hail and Farewell" or Continuum or UNIT:E or Aw Yeah Revolution! or the deleted scenes are dropped, which makes total sense. I mostly included them for historical context, not because I think anyone should actually read them. I definitely think James Roberts' prose stories are far, far more worth your time than basically anything Shane McCarthy or Mike Costa wrote, and I say this as someone who doesn't even like those prose stories that much.
Spotlight: Blaster and Spotlight: Arcee are delayed until after Devastation; I can't really tell why, but neither can I particularly justify their existing placement in the order, aside from that I just wanted a bigger chunk of Spotlights.
Spotlight: Wheelie is moved a bit earlier. I don't get this at all; it was the last to be published, and it's completely unrelated to everything else. With Klaus Scherwinski being partially responsible for the story, it feels more of a pair with Spotlight: Mirage to me.
Megatron Origin and Hearts of Steel are swapped. This is neither here nor there—I guess maybe the intent is to have Megatron Origin lead directly into All Hail Megatron? The Infestation 2 issues are skipped, which is justifiable.
Spotlight: Prowl is bumped up a little. Genuinely wonder why, it's not for publication order reasons. Sidenote—what's the vibe, do people really think Spotlight: Prowl was actually ever planned for the ongoing before people started complaining about Costa's Prowl? Signs point to no.
"Police Action" and "Chaos" are interleaved together for simplicity. This is one case where I actually agree with Andy Schmidt; the two storylines are entirely unrelated, and while that kind of interleaving makes sense on a serialised monthly comic timescale, it's narratively confusing for an archival reader. Like, "Chaos" is already one of the most incomprehensible and overcomplicated comics IDW put out, without weaving in a completely separate plot. I find it funny that the interleaving is now viewed as the simple "default"; for me, reading from my old Humble Bundle CBZs of the series, it's actually easier to just read one trade paperback after the other. For a long time, everyone was reading this stuff by trades. But now, everyone has to use the Perfectly Legal Websites, and it's a completely different story!
The More Than Meets the Eye Annual has been moved after issue #8. This is honestly one of my biggest IDW reading order pet peeves. The trades put it there, but as written it's set between the two Scavengers issues, and that's when it was intended to be published, too. Personally I just don't think that clumping the Scavengers two-parter together is important enough to justify getting non-chronological with it.
The Transformers #43-44 come a little bit later. I don't know why this is, and if I'm being honest I don't remember any of that shit well enough to meaningfully justify why we had it the way we did in the first place. I think it's because of chronology with Combiner Hunters...?
Presumably so as not to have The Transformers issue #45 on its own, it's been clumped up with the following arc. Which means there isn't an obvious place for Redemption to go, so it's been repurposed as a break between two consecutive arcs of The Transformers, as the entire season finale has also been moved up to be clumped with issue #50. I think that's the logic here? Like, I get it, I don't like having issue #45 on its own either.
Action Man is skipped from the list proper, although it does get a mention later. This is a crime.
I also really wish the M.A.S.K. Annual had been kept in there, because it's not by Brandon Easton, but rather by the cowriter of First Strike, and it has some Transformers content in it, and I think it's really funny to pretend a M.A.S.K. book is required reading.
First Strike #0 has been missed, which I thiiink is just an oversight?
But yeah, it was in many places a really pleasant surprise to see stuff exactly as we had it, as if to say, "yep, that works!" In retrospect, we made some fucking choices. Putting Spotlight: Grimlock where we did is the kind of subjective bullshit people would be totally justified in ignoring. Siloing the Autocracy trilogy off as its own little skippable pile of garbage, or putting the Dark Prelude set of Spotlights in such a seemingly bizarre spot, definitely seemed like they'd be the first things someone would undo. Really glad to see it!
I'm definitely due some kind of IDW Phase 2 reread, but I always flipflop about how to go about it. Before Revolution, More than Meets the Eye and Robots in Disguise are practically joined at the hip, and you do genuinely miss out on stuff by reading just one or the other. But then after the relaunch, they're two almost completely independent story threads. It's wild how much that stuff falls off.
And speaking personally, I've always found that interleaving them just kind of makes me hate Barber's stuff? Which sucks, because Barber is a great comics writer—in many ways a better comics writer than Roberts! But fuck me, early on, More than Meets the Eye is just in a league of its own. It is so much funnier and more meaningful and narratively intricate. Every break to read another chunk of the Bumblebee/Starscream/Metalhawk political drama is a chore. It's eating your broccoli so you can have dessert. Of course, by the time of Optimus Prime and Lost Light, it's a different story.
(I think what I really want to do next is the Barber/Scott auteur run. I've not done it before. I wanna see how that one works. Some of that material, I've only ever read the once!)
Ultimately, I'm just like... there's no good way to read this stuff. It is all inherently imperfect. That's comics, really. Hopefully Bobby's list helps an entirely new bunch of people to discover the good stuff!
Tumblr media
Okay! Without further ado, here's my IDW Transformers (main continuity) reading order that I said I was putting together, complete with a lot of commentary to try and help new readers understand what's what and where to start.
(I'll probably have to make some minor corrections here and there, but this should be good enough for now.)

15 Questions 15 Mutuals
Tagged by @cloudsofbespin, @lesfleursrouges, and @showmey0urfangs
1. Are you named after anyone? First name, no, but my middle name is after my mother and grandmother's middle name.
2. When was the last time you cried? Honestly, I can't remember, but it was probably out of frustration rather than sadness.
3. Do you have kids? Technically, I have 12 in a freezer but the pandemic made us realise AW HELL NO we don't want kids so we'll probably let them expire next year. (Long story)
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? It's practically my native language.
5. What sports do you play/have played? I played soccer/football as a little kid, then varsity softball, but I wasn't particularly good or passionate about either. I started running in my early 20s and discovered I was born for endurance sports. Like, the longer I go, the stronger I get (also it helps that I'm super stubborn). I've run 7 marathons and competed internationally on the track, but I prefer the runs long enough to require snacks. Like, I fucking love running for so many reasons. I cycle mostly for transportation but have done a few centuries, and enjoy Zwift (turbo). I hate yoga but have practiced Pilates regularly for 6+ years.
6. What's the first thing you notice about people? I'm partially faceblind so I have to see someone a BUNCH of times and in context to recognise them, so I totally look for clothing and hairstyles first. I had to ask my Mom the other day what colour my Dad's eyes were as I couldn't picture him properly.
7. What's your eye color? Green/grey
8. Scary movies or happy endings?  Happy endings. Scary movies just make me unbearably anxious.
9. Any special talents? Dunno? I played flute for ten years so I can just pick one up now and sight read. Oh I'm great at belting out pop songs at karaoke. And I can pick a chicken carcass clean for leftovers better than anyone I know.
10. Where were you born? I'll answer the place and almost exact date with three words: Three Mile Island. Yes, in addition to consuming the blood of others to stay alive, I should also glow in the dark. Tell me I'm not the perfect vampire candidate!
11. What are your hobbies? sewing, running, karaoke, mixing cocktails, cooking, making adventures, exploring foreign supermarkets
12. Do you have pets? a total sweetheart of a black cat
13. How tall are you? 172cm (5'8") and I have freakishly long thighs
14. Favorite subject in school? Science. I have a degree in genetics, I just have never used it...
15. Dream job? Carol Cutshall's assistant. Just let me sew cool shit all day long, please? (I worked behind the scenes on The Great British Sewing Bee for a few seasons and it was a blast!)
I'm not tagging 15 mutuals because I find a sick pleasure in breaking chain letters and also cos I've only been on Tumblr for a few months and have no idea where it even lists who's following me. 🙃

Finished Jack's flowcharts
Wrote the Guides for Jack and Lance
Made corrections to Caissa's route
Corrected Magnus' route
Pushed out Jack and Lance's routes for beta testing
Completed 3 Ari CGs/CG sets
Completed 2 Caleb CGs/CG sets
Completed 1 Caleb mini-CG
Completed 1 Magnus CG set
Completed 1 Jack CG
Imported and coded most of these CGs
FINALLY coded the ending screens in
Planning for Quill's route
The Ramble:
Hey everyone! So since my last update, I finished up all the flowchart remakes and coded the remaining charts. I wrote up the basic guides for Jack and Lance's routes, then pushed those routes out for testing after making corrections to routes already out for testing.
With flowcharts done I've been working on CGs and got quite a few of them done this week. Though I don't expect to keep up that pace.
Some of the ones I completed this week were already partially completed for one. And, of course, some CGs are just more complicated than others.
I'm actually trying to not get all the easy ones out of the way first because I don't want to leave myself with a bunch of difficult ones to do. I want to be able to alternate between tricky and easy.
That said, a couple of the ones I did this week were a little on the easier side so that's part of why I got so many done.
CGs are currently around 40% complete based on how many I expect to have in the released base game.
I also got most of the new CGs coded which maybe doesn't seem like a big deal but given how much more complicated anything with Morgan is...
Is actually a big deal. LoL
A lot more work goes into the Morgan CGs than the others as far as the saving of the files and the set up so I'm proud to have just gotten them all coded successfully too.
Toward the end of the week I took a break from CGs and worked on some writing. I still have to solidify the synopses for Reuben, Yuu, and Quill. Particularly Quill.
Quill is the least planned and is also proving the most difficult. I know the general idea of where I want his route to go but I'm having difficulty putting all the pieces together. There are a lot of possible ideas that I can work in but it can be difficult to know what fits, what needs to be tossed, and what the progression of events will be.
I talked to a friend about it yesterday and kind of smoothed some aspects out, then today was able to solidify a few other elements. So I think I'll get the general flow of events and antagonist motivations worked out soon.
I'll be able to write up his basic synopsis and then from there, I'll work on everyone's scene-by-scene synopsis so the routes are ready to go as far as writing goes.
Sneak Peeks and Previews:
(CG sneakpeeks will always show Morgan's default colours, but her customisation is reflected in the CGs in game.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Upcoming Weeks:
CGs, corrections, and maybe some route planning/writing.
While there are still a lot of little polishing things I need to get done (some non-CG or sprite art assets, SFX, glossary, etc), the last remaining BIG thing is getting all the CGs completed. Overall, the base game with the original six LIs is about 90% complete.
I've reconciled myself to the fact that each route is going to need 7 CGs or "CG sets" instead of the 5 I promised. The routes are just too long and there are too many key moments for 5 to be sufficient.
This is more work for me but I knew from the start it would likely be 7 and not 5 for this game.
And for Heaven's sake, I'm counting a set of CGs that illustrate a single important moment as ONE CG. 😒
I'm not counting it as two CGs because Magnus opens his eyes in one CG, resulting in two CGs that are almost identical except his eyes.
I realised this week how much I was stressing over whether or not to add those sorts of variations because people had complained in Changeling about some characters having "more CGs" than others due to these kinds of variations - despite that each route had either 5 or 6 CG moments illustrated regardless how many gallery slots they had in the CG gallery.
It occurred to me that something so petty should not be causing me to stress out so much about this kind of thing.
Anyway, I'll see you all in a couple of weeks!

Oh no, all the hobbits Aragorn.
Tumblr media
Aragorn x reader.
Request for Thatfoolishhuman 'I would love an Aragorn imagine! Could you do one where the Mc is a healer (like, she can make wounds disappear with her hands.) and she patches Aragorn up after a battle and he falls in love with how gentle she is.'
Summary: Imagine being apart of the fellowship, being Gandalf's niece , you learn some stuff from him whether he liked it or not. Basically following the fellowship in secret from Rivendell, until you slipped up.
A/n: Arwen and Aragorn aren't together in this imagine, he still grew up with Elrond. A pitch is a piggyback ride it's the original name for it. Totally didn’t make a meme for this
Word count:2253
Warnings: I'm British, so spelling for certain words differs, such as grey, colour, among other words, don't be mad please.
Growing up around a wizard, especially Gandalf the grey, you learnt a lot. He just left books laying around, books full of spells. Of course Gandalf wasn't really related to you, but he might as well have been. Your parents travelled a lot, so you ended up being around Gandalf most of your childhood.
Gandalf had taught you some basic spells, nothing major, healing spells mostly, children are clumsy. It was no secret your parents didn't like you running through the forests, saying it was too dangerous , general protectiveness, you guess. Many times they proved that they were right, many times you had fallen into traps left for animals. You would've probably bled out, if it wasn't for Gandalf.
Still living with your parents, no longer a child, not knowing what you wanted to do, you parents wanted you to go work in the local bakery, not wanting you to travel around like they did, dangerous times with black riders frequently on the road and such. But of course you didn't want a simple life.
Again your parents had left on business, this time you didn't go to Gandalf's house, you had maybe listened in, when going to visit Frodo , only to see Samwise Gamgee listening under the window. You know how it goes, Gandalf caught him, not you.
You ended up following Frodo, Sam , Merry and Pippin. Life is boring, might as well take a risk, you longed for adventure, like the mister Bilbo.
Surprisingly the elves had not even noticed you at Rivendell, actually not surprising Gandalf had brought you there many times, so they probably thought you were with him. You had waited in the trees outside Rivendell's gates, for them.
You hadn't know what was actually going on , or whether there would actually be a quest, but to your lucky there was. Not really lucky for Boromir though... soon enough Frodo and Gandalf had emerged along with 7 others.
You weren't noticed for a long time considering, Frodo's fault completely, when Frodo had fallen down the mountain in the snow, you had been hiding not so great in the snow, and of course Frodo landed facing you. While Aragorn had rushed back to Frodo, Frodo's face was laced with confusion as he stared at you.
"Y/n...?" Frodo had stood up, not realising he had dropped the ring, you rising with your backpack and coat one, with the snow littering your hair.  Aragorn had just stared too moving towards Frodo, carefully, the others travelling down to see what was going on.
"Oh, Frodo!  What are you doing here? I was just out to get some milk for my dinner." Standing calf deep in snow, freezing, yet your facing burning with embarrassment.
"I was wondering when you'd reveal yourself." Gandalf chuckling , of course he knew you were there, but what you didn't know was that Gollum had been not even three feet away from you..  Gandalf had turned back grabbing the ring from Boromir and launching it at Frodo, like he was Michael Jordan.
"Gandalf who is this?" Gimli of all of the fellowship had questioned you, he wasn't afraid to speak his mind.
"Y/n is my niece , now come along we don't have all day."
Thus, you were no longer a stalker , but part of the fellowship. Time had passed and you had lost your uncle, but it didn't feel right, you couldn't process his death, so you pretended he just slipped on some bread and was at home resting.
Soon enough you were all heading for Lothlórien, without realising it, you had stayed close to Legolas at this moment, mostly to bug him.
"If elves are so great, then how didn't you notice me? For all you know I could've been watching you pee, I wasn't but I could've been.  While you was sleeping I could've chopped your hair off and made a wig. Why do you look like your are apart of a dance routine? Why do you float? How does it feel to have a dick for a father?" Rambling on , you are surprised that Legolas doesn't whoop you, he could've, you wouldn't have been able to do much, you aren't the best person at defence.
You couldn't tell if you was annoying Legolas or not, but Gimli had kept smirking your way, as he stomped through the forest.
"Hey, Legolas? "
"Yes, y/n?" Legolas had sighed , he much preferred Gimli antics.
"Can I have a pitch?" But he had just stared at you, frowning, huffing you had walking around Legolas so you was next to Aragorn. Only for your ankle to roll, making you fall into Aragorn, it didn't necessarily hurt but. Aragorn had grabbed you and placed you back onto your feet.
"Um, Aragorn? You know you much better that Legolas..? Can I have a pitch?" You were undoubtedly attracted Aragorn, come on, he looks like a God. Fuck Thor. He didn't even answer just knelt down, allowing you to grip around his neck, and grab your calf's. Carrying on walking with ease.
Raising your eyebrows and smirking at Legolas behind you, he just never showed any emotion, except in that scene with Haldir , where he just smirks creepily in the background.
You weren't particularly close to anyone in the fellowship other than Frodo and Sam. But when Boromir died, yes it was sad, but where did the hobbits go? You had stayed close to Aragorn as he fought down the Uruk-hai as you hid in a tree. Before lifting you down, rushing to dying Boromir.
"They took the little ones,"
"Be still."
"Frodo! Where is Frodo?"
"I let Frodo go."
"Then you did what I could not. I tried to take the Ring from him."
Kneeling next to Boromir, "The hobbits Aragorn, but we shall get them back." Boromir was too far gone to be saved, the wrong brother died sadly. Boromir eyes had met yours once more , as he smiled , before he finished his speech to his king.
After Boromir was sent home, the fellowship was down to just four, rushing after Merry and Pippin.  "We must hurry! The hobbits Aragorn!" Five minutes of running , and you were already getting a stitch.  This was no time for jokes.
Soon enough Gandalf was alive, and Aragorn was dead, as Théoden had lead you all to helms deep. You had seen Eowyn, oh how heartbroken she was after she found out Aragorn was dead, that bitch knew him for what five minutes, she was already grinding up on him.
You were witch, she was a princess, obviously Aragorn was going to prefer her. Soon enough Aragorn practically marching into helms deep, injured but alive , what's with all the faked deaths.
After Aragorn had done his big speech and everyone had left to get ready for war, you had stayed behind obviously, you didn't want to confront him in front of everyone. "Uh, Aragorn?" You were unsure of yourself, honestly, you can't have a crush on a king. You swear kings have bad hair, lucky Aragorn didn't , look at the British royal family.. now that's embarrassing.
Aragorn had turned Aragorn to face you, waiting for you to speak, he definitely didn't fall from heaven, the Valar decided to test him by shoving him off a cliff.
"Um, I was wondering if I c-could help with those wounds, um, I didn't know if you needed help?" You were sure that your face was probably flushed red, it would be surprising if he could even understand you , as you stumbled over your own words.
Aragorn had nodded , before sitting down near by.  Grabbing the king foil out of your bag , along with other healing herbs, Aragorn had removed his jacket and undone some of the buttons on his tunic. Bringing a stool in front of Aragorn for you to sit.  You weren't about to chew up the kings foil,  tearing it up before trying to gently apply it to the huge gash across his chest.
A small groan had emerged from his lips as you had placed a piece kings foil to the gash too harshly. "Sorry." Looking into Aragorn's bright eyes , for a spilt second before going back to gently placing the kings foil. Aragorn stops you , by grabbing your wrist , not with force, making you look back up at him.
"Do not be sorry, I just fell off a cliff, I've been through worse." A smile reassuring smile plant on his face, but you can only think what is worse than falling off a cliff.
"Okay, sorry, I mean I'm not sorry, you are very intelligent or a king, there's warg! Let's go fight our enemy on the edge of a cliff. Um, actually that's embarrassing because I fell down a well because a owl scared me, I was stuck down there for hours, and then Gandalf found me and used a bucket to get me out. I had to sit in the bucket while he pulled it up."
Aragorn had let go of your wrist , allowing you to continue as you spoke, "you have not changed."
"Pardon?" Aragorn was smiling down at you as your eyebrows scrunched together.
" Last week I saw leaf , hit you in the back of your neck, you jumped three feet in the air." Your face flushed again, as you tried to contain a smile, as Aragorn laughed at you.
"I did not, that was not a leaf, it was a snake!"
"A green round snake, I believe you , y/n" you had stopped applying the kings foil, to put your head between your nerves , to hide your face in embarrassment . "It was a deformed snake."
"Last month, you skidded in mud and fell flat on your back, when Legolas put his hand on your shoulder briefly. Or when you kicked Boromir's cock when he was try-" sitting back up to look at Aragorn.
"You are right, next time it will be you that I will kick." Aragorn could not have shut his legs quicker, making you laugh at him, "I'll have to start wearing a shield."
"Never know when I'll strike, your balls are going to be deformed." Aragorn had gasped at you, as you brought your hand other his wound beginning to heal him as you chanted quietly.
"Such foul language, Gandalf would not approve." Looking up to Aragorn with a small smile, placing your other hand on his shoulder softly, to stop him from moving.  Really the healing didn't take very long, the cut left a blood stain though.  "Stay there," (or you get unprofessional neutering.) Grabbing the water pouch from your bag, and piece of cloth.
Before returning to sit in front of Aragorn with the damp cloth, wiping off the dried blood gently.  You couldn't help but feel like you had done something good today, you got to heal ,clean an very attractive man stopping his wound from getting infected and him dying.
Plus,he's Aragorn, who wouldn't want to touch his chest.   As you finished, you had look down for your pouch, only to see how blood his hands were. Lifting his hand up to examine it, no way you were a doctor. " How have you not gotten infection? All that Orc blood going into your open wounds." Again having to heal all the  little cuts and slices on his hands.
It was no secret to Aragorn that he had developed a like for you, from the moment Frodo saw you sticking out in the snow like a mole heap.
“Tis the best you are going to be, after this battle you will covered again. Legolas probably glide through here, any minute asking where his beloved is.” Both of you standing up, grabbing your bag, you had leant up to press a kiss to Aragorns cheek, before turning away to head to where the woman and children were, Gandalf’s orders.
Aragorn had stopped you again, by the shoulder, causing you to turn back around. “Y/n, thank you. May I ask for something else?” Aragorns eyes looking into your e/c ones
softly, you had nodded. “Would you accept me courtship?” You had just pressed your lips slow onto his before pulling away.
The door was quickly opened “ARAGORN!” Legolas glided into the room, rushing towards you and Aragorn. Sighing “your beloved is here,” Legolas was stood between both of you, you had to walk around him, to wrap your arms around Aragorn, briefly embracing, before pulling away.
Legolas just stared, “I’m not hugging you too, leg a less, that’s what your name would be if you had no legs, because your legs aragorn”

I don't think you play TRR/TRH anymore but you should see what they did to Kiara in the newest chapter. It's so dumb and makes me so angry, especially considering the current climate of events. I've already seen people on Reddit be like "but we helped her overcome her trauma" (we didn't lol) and someone called her the c-word, very classy. Honestly PB's been low key racist in the past but all the stuff right now makes it high key...
Tumblr media
(Apologies for the long post and not being able to place this under a cut)
I'm pretty glad I got these anons because truth be told I wasn't sure how many people - besides the few that I already knew were constantly speaking about Kiara's treatment in the books - would care enough to ask any questions about this. Most of the posts I saw expressed a disturbing eagerness to throw her under the bus, without exploring nuance or asking questions, and at this point I'm not very surprised.
I've always maintained that the treatment for Kiara is what happens when both the writers and the fandom are heartless, and these past few weeks have only been proof of that.
There are questions you could raise about this finale re: Kiara - questions almost no one seems to bother asking. I have three:
1. In this Coventus Nobilis...how is it that I see four Heads of House, and only one heir?
2. If Kiara - who is not head of house - is supposed to represent Castelserraillian instead of her father Hakim (who presides over that estate), why do I not see Madeleine? Why do I not see Penelope?
3. Why are we suddenly seeing Adeleide  popping up out of practically nowhere to rep Krona/Fydelia, and Landon conveniently rep-ping Portavira?
Some of the answers to these questions lie in the questions themselves. Why else would Madeleine and Penelope not be present in this meeting - if it weren't to purposely distance them from this awful moment? After all, both of them have inbuilt subplots ready for the next book that would require interactions with the core group. How else do you think the writers could ensure we kept coddling them and pandering to them in Book 3, except by distancing them from this "betrayal"?
Why else would the narrative choose to pit Kiara - the lone woman of colour we'd been shitting on for most of this series - against Olivia - the white woman who has been given innumerable individual PoV scenes and her own mini-book (and whose reputation we had to help rebuild in said mini book whether we cared about her stupid duchy or not).
Why else would they force Kiara to alert us mere minutes before the meeting begin, if not to distract us with crumbs ("See? At least we wrote her as warning you. Of course we don't hate her!").
Why else would you have Olivia and Kiara pitted against each other like this - if not to show these two women side by side, on opposing ends -  and compel us to believe that the white woman we spent 4.5 books propping up and pampering, is the most loyal one.  When in fact we have done absolutely nothing to deserve any fucking loyalty from Kiara or her family to begin with! (Ezekiel and his white bride notwithstanding).
What we finally got as a result, was a narrative that (as @queen-of-effing-everything summed it up when I discussed this with her) in one full sweep "glorifies Olivia, shields Madeleine and Penelope and sets up Kiara". Very few of us even noticed. And even if we did notice, is there any guarantee that we would care??
Remember how I mentioned in my last ask that I wished we expanded the same energy that we did with Aurora, to speak up against the ill-treatment of other black characters? Kiara was undoubtedly one of those.
After this, we as a fandom will speak very easily now of her "betrayal". We will call her the b-word and the c-word. We will boast of how we will "take her down" along with Adeleide and Landon and Bartie Sr. We'll boast about how we "never liked her" to begin with, as if doing so required some...idk exemplary foresight. We will make memes about how Olivia was "the only bitch we ever respected". We will make huge, sweeping claims about how Kiara was our "friend" and how (as you've mentioned, anon) we "helped her overcome her trauma" (!!!!) and claim by that token that  we were entitled to good treatment from her. I'm pretty sure when TRH3 finally comes out, her every word and action will be screenshot, put up on blogs, mocked and torn down just so we can write essays on how awful she is.
Yet I saw very little of this energy in Book 3, where the MC could first emotionally manipulate her into supporting the Unity Tour, and where we actively suspected her  at a time when she was traumatized. At most there was some lukewarm acknowledgement of how she "deserves better", all while people still continued to write fanfic that positioned her as creepy and obsessed and villainous.  Almost no one had a problem with Savannah not acknowledging Kiara's earlier support of her, and in fact I'd seen posts that clubbed her with the other ladies of the court who likely "treated Savannah badly". Her father Hakim was made to join the tour alongside her by default, without the expectations that Landon/Emmeline and Godfrey/Adeleide were allowed to have, and the fandom was mysteriously silent about Hakim being made to "bow to his knees" in a way the others did not have to. Very few people even bothered to  notice or talk about how often Penelope was allowed to hold the MC's baby, or how Kiara was never really allowed to hold her even once. Which "friend" treats someone like this??
When I finally published this essay on the treatment meted out to Kiara especially in Book 3, what I got was a lot of neat, but ultimately hollow, little platitudes about how Kiara "deserved better" (How and in what way? Who knows, who cares). Out of those many many people who reblogged and responded, only a handful held the MC and Drake in particular (and Maxwell, who thought it appropriate to joke about "one suspect down") accountable for choosing to suspect and interrogate just her, and for showing ZERO remorse in forcing her to reopen those wounds. How is it that we can judge Kiara for this latest "betrayal", yet pretend that the MC and Drake had nothing to do with the pain THEY caused to her? How is it that this fandom was so fired up over her comments, yet would have such a weak, muted, carefully-generalized response to the screenshots where Drake was openly suspecting her and optionally  minimizing her trauma?
Following that, why should we be entitled to good treatment from Kiara when we never really gave her even half as much?? Why is it so easy to divorce characters from their words and actions in Drake/MC/Maxwell's case, but so hard for a character like Kiara? (One may claim this is because Drake and Maxwell are potential co-protagonists, but the aforementioned essay already proves that you as a main character can get punished for not treating a mere side character with kindness).
Another thing that fascinates and repulses me even further is how the fandom has created myths around this one character, and how PB has constantly leaned into these "characteristics" even though the text itself tells an altogether different story:
1. Kiara is a snob. This is especially hilarious considering that she is established in Book 2 as being the only person who befriended Savannah before her departure and cared about what happened to her when she left. Never once in the books has she looked down on us for class-related issues, or outright mocked people for not knowing the languages she knew. In fact, she was the first person to acknowledge our skills if we showed any before Lythikos in Book 1. On the other hand, Penelope can be uppity and look down on us in Book 1 (there is even a dialogue option in Chapter 10 that leads to her calling us a "commoner wench") if we don't do well, and yet she's a cinnamon roll.  Olivia can engage in snobbish , entitled behaviour without the fandom having a problem just because she's their favourite. Madeleine can look down on us and pretend for 3/4ths of the social season that we're not worth her time yet somehow Kiara is the snob. Okay. Okay. 😐
2. Kiara is "obsessed with" Drake and constantly comes on to him. This is said by the same group of people who saw Olivia fucking Nevrakis plant a WHOLE FUCKING SMACKER on Liam's mouth, and said..nothing. Kiara on the other hand, has admired Drake's abs once, mentioned she'd always liked Drake once, spoken normally to him about his sister once, flirted with him once (Paris tea party), and ordered a wine from him when he was bartending. In the next book she either looks at him wistfully or admires his suit. Yet somehow she's the creepy, annoying, stalkerish. Okay. Ooookay. 😑
(This one was particularly damaging, because post the TRR3 hiatus, all efforts from PB were focused on reversing Kiara's position as an alternative LI. This included "confirming" on livestream that her affections were one-sided, at a time when Olivia was finally allowed to have some romantic moments with a single Liam, pushing forward a buildup scene to Drake's eventual secret wedding that had him acting extremely rude and confrontational to Kiara mere minutes after suspecting her (while she was expressing joy at his upcoming wedding in his playthrough!!!), and involving a subplot where he openly and by default suspected her. Sure, he spends a minute to be nice to her and chat about trauma if the MC chooses. But that's like a drop of sewage water floating in an ocean of shit).
3. Kiara Pretended to Be Our Friend And Then Dropped Us: This is false. Kiara only ever promised to put in a good word for us to the rest of the court, no more, no less. And she fulfilled that promise. Otherwise she never pretended to be friends with us nor made friendly overtures either way. In fact if you're going to accuse anyone of duplicity, you have Penelope and Madeleine. Yet somehow Kiara is the dishonest one. Okay. Okay. 🙃
4. Kiara Was Insensitive To Penelope and Didn't Understand Her. I'm not sure how Kiara is supposed to magically understand something that her friend isn't telling her. Plus this argument deliberately leaves out the fact that she stood up for Penelope when people chose to be mean to her, and even explained to the MC that she employs "tough love" because she can't always be around to protect Penelope. It also leaves out how one-sided this friendship is and how Kiara is made to do most of the heavy work in this friendship. Meanwhile, at Kiara's most difficult time period, in Castelserraillian, Penelope says absolutely nothing as the MC forces Kiara to join the Unity Tour, while making bedroom eyes at Kiara's brother. In fact the only reason Kiara's brother even exists is to give Penelope a love interest. The Kiara-Penelope friendship practically revolves around Penelope. I have never really seen Penelope look out for Kiara or attempt to actually support her in any way, and Kiara was the one who got the knife wounds. Yet somehow I'm supposed to believe that Penelope's the better friend of the two. Suuuuure. 😡
And this steaming pile of crap doesn't just make its way into shitposts and short opinion posts. It creeps into fanfic and fandom opinions. It finds its way in the tags and in other social media. It eventually even finds its way into the books, even though nothing in the earlier narrative ever really supported these extremely stale takes.
Because PB didn't care for Kiara the way they cared for their white characters, they had no problem framing her narrative the way this fandom so desparately wanted it. Book 3 has the MC claim behind her back that Kiara is stuck-up and acts like knowing ten languages makes her better than everybody else, even though this is not backed up by the text, and in fact you will never see any acknowledgement of how Madeleine forced Kiara to make herself sound "exotic" in Book 2, or of how Madeleine and the MC (optionally) could downplay or question her skills unless they wanted to use her. Also, Penelope is never allowed to be talked about like that no matter what she's done. PB even had a scene (in the Hana playthrough) where they aggressively retconned the events of Madeleine's bachelorette party, where Kiara supposedly shouted at Penelope until the latter cried, and Madeleine was the one "having fun". Kiara was literally being thrown under the bus to make Madeleine look better. Madeleine. Imagine that. Madeleine.
Given how desparate the fandom was to nitpick and overdramatize everything Kiara said and did, is it any wonder that the team got away with the writing they gave her in Book 3? Considering that all the false arguments I stated above have made a resurgence in the past few weeks or days...is it any wonder that the only "support" this fandom is capable of re: Kiara, is lukewarm platitudes, cold takes and rank hypocrisy??
Yes, we can hold PB solely/largely  accountable for the treatment meted out to Kiara now. They made these choices over and over, and continue to do so, while tossing us occasional crumbs of faux-sweet behaviour from the MC. And they did this in insidious ways, which were so hard to catch that even a Kiara stan like me had to observe multiple playthroughs just to unravel even half of what they'd done.
But let's not pretend a huge chunk of the fandom was just as responsible for this - with their unfounded opinions, their disgusting bias, their favouritism of white characters, their refusal to observe anything besides their favourites, and their godawful fanfiction where Kiara is a creep or evil or killing the virtuous main character. Out of the huge body of fanwork that I've seen for TRR that features Kiara - at least 90% of it features her stalking Drake, or harming the MC (particularly the Drake MC), or in cahoots with the villains, or generally being referred to as a creep (why Olivia, who kissed Liam without his consent in Book 1 and was entitled enough to be angry about him not returning her feelings in TRH1, never got this sort of writing - I fail to understand). There is a tremendous gap between the vitriol dumped on her when she does something the MC doesn't like, and the milquetoast response when harm is done to her. There have been times when I've had to comb through pages and pages of hate just to read even one positive post on Kiara in her own goddamn tag.
When the next book arrives, I know you folks will continue to gas up the white women in this book every chance you get, and mask your racist vitriol for characters like Kiara (and Hana, let's not forget the way y'all treat Hana) behind the same self-righteous judgements and the same tired, stale takes. I know that PB - despite what I will still believe is their hollow promises today - will write every single one of those stale takes into existence. All because it will be "justified", because Kiara is a "bad person" or "untrustworthy" or "fake". Whatever. Y'all can stick to Olivia The Black Hole and babysit Madeleine and Penelope, I guess. Kiara always deserved better than these writers and most of this fandom anyway.

June 2021 Roundup
It's been a month of highs and lows. Every year my city holds a cabaret festival, and I've seen some truly amazing acts over the years - including Lea Salonga, Kristin Chenoweth, and Indina Menzel. This year's Artistic Director was the great Alan Cumming, and although due to covid he didn't quite get to curate the program he wanted to, the opening night Gala was still a highlight, as was Alan's DJ set at the pop-up Club Cumming afterwards, where there was much singing at the top of my lungs and dancing to pop anthems and theatre tunes. At one point Alan, dressed in a onesie and perched on the shoulders of a man wearing only sparkly short shorts, was carried around the dance floor while Circle of Life blared. Reader, I was delighted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was also able to see his solo show Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age, which was hilarious and damn, he can sing!
As for the low, I was meant to fly to Sydney for the weekend to see Hamilton, a trip I have been looking forward to for almost a year, but had to be cancelled because of a covid outbreak and border closures. The tickets have been rescheduled, but I'm still kind of bummed about it (while completely appreciating the need for covid safety, especially when our vaccine rollout has been completely botched by our incompetent, corrupt federal government)
Anyway.
Reading
The Hundred and One Dalmations (Dodie Smith) - With all the bewilderment over Disney's Cruella, I decided to revisit the original novel which I first read as a kid. It's funny, I had very vivid memories of this book, or rather thought I did, particularly the scene where Roger and Anita have dinner at Cruella's house that fixed in my young mind as utterly disturbing with all this devil imagery and the implication Cruella was literally some kind of demon, which must have been either a) my overactive imagination or b) an illustration, because it's not as clear as I thought it was. The strangeness is there (food with too much pepper, Cruella's inability to keep warm, the walls painted blood red) but not the explicit demon imagery I had remembered. There is a part later in the book recounting the history of Hell Hall and the rumors of Cruella's ancestor streaking out of the place conjuring blue lightening, but clearly child me was reading far more into the book than was on the page.
But I still wish they'd gone with this version of Cruella's backstory, because to me an aristocratic, ink-drinking, heat-obsessed, possibly-demon spawn, high camp villain is more interesting and rings far more true than plucky punk against the establishment.
Smith clearly had Facts About Dalmations to share, and she does really craft a wonderful animal-based story that the Disney animated film is largely faithful to. Key differences include: Roger's occupation (he doesn't have to pay tax because he wiped out government debt somehow?!?), Pongo's mate and the puppy's mother is called Missis, Perdita is another dalmation who acts as a kind of doggie wet nurse, Roger and Anita both have Nannies who come to live with them (Nanny Butler and Nanny Cook), Cruella is married to a furrier (who changed his last name to de Vil). Also odd, on her first description Cruella is described as having "dark skin" but later in the novel her "white face" is mentioned, so I'm chalking it up to 50's descriptors not having the same meanings they do today.
The Duke and I (Julia Quinn) - After being just whelmed by the tv series, I wasn't really planning on reading the books, but I saw this on the top picks shelf at the library and damn, the top picks shelf is irresistible. This is very much Daphne's book (and I had known each in the series dealt with the different sibling) so many of the characters and much of the plot of the show is absent, as are some of the more baffling elements of the show like the Diamond of the First Water nonsense, which I always thought was a strange character choice in that it stacks the deck for Daphne when her character arc is better served as somewhat of an underdog (in her third season, the kind of girl who is liked but not adored), and the Prince subplot which was always far too OTT even for soapy regency romance.
It's a breezy, fun read (that scene excepted), even if the misunderstandings are contrived and I'm never going to take "I'll never have kids because I hate my dad" as a credible romantic obstacle deserving of so much angst.
Faeries (Brian Froud and Alan Lee) - A lovingly detailed and illustrated compendium of Faerie and its inhabitants, drawing from a range of European (but primarily Celtic) folklore and mythology. Froud was a conceptual designer on The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, and the link is clear in the art as well as the focus on faeries as mysterious but oftimes sinister beings, where human encounters with them rarely end well. Lee has illustrated several publications of Tolkien's novels, and was a lead concept artists for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, and there is a touch of Middle Earth here as well, or rather the common inspiration of the old world. A useful resource for my novel!
Watching
The Handmaid's Tale (season 4, episodes 4-8) SPOILERS - So when I last wrote about this show in the Roundup, I was complaining it wasn't going anywhere. Well, I'm happy to be wrong because they finally changed things up with June finally escaping to Canada. That part of the plot following the survivors and their trauma has always been far more compelling than Gilead, and so it was a welcome development even if I side-eye some of the choices (none of these characters is seeing an actual licensed therapist why?).
This show has always been difficult to watch given the subject matter, and that has not changed after the shift in power dynamics. I will give the show credit for showing a broad range of trauma responses, from Moira wanting to move on and not let it consume her, to June, a ball of rage and revenge on a downward spiral, to Emily, trying to follow Moira's path but being drawn to June's, to Luke, trying his best but utterly unequipped to deal with what is happening.
But it is very hard to watch June go down this path - raping her husband (I concede the show perhaps didn't intend for it to be rape, but that's what is on screen and framing it as just "taking away Luke's agency" doesn't change that), wishing death on Serena's unborn child, and orchestrating Fred's brutal murder by particulation, then holding her own daughter still covered in his blood and it getting smeared on Nicole's face (an unsubtle metaphor in a series full of unsubtle metaphors).
There are interesting questions being asked of the viewer, and the show (perhaps rightly) not giving any answers. I can certainly appreciate the catharsis of Fred getting what he deserves even if I personally find the manner of it horrifying, but where is the line between justice and revenge, is revenge the only option when justice is denied, when does a trauma release become cyclical violence/abuse - the show is, for now, letting the viewer decide.
Soul (dir. Pete Docter and Kemp Powers) - In a world full of remakes/reboots/sequels, Pixar is perhaps the lone segment under the Disney umbrella committed to original content. However, there does seem to be a Pixar formula at work directed to precision tugging the heart strings, and some of the film feels like well-trod ground. On the other hand, it's hard to criticise the risk of centering a kids film around the existential crisis of a middle aged man, even with the requisite cutesy elements (and of course, the uncomfortable pattern of yet another film where the black lead character spends a great deal of the runtime in non-human form - herein, an amorphous blob or a cat). But the animation is stunning, it successfully did tug my heart strings, and the design of the Great Before and the Jerrys is original and fun.
RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under - Drag Race is somewhat of a guilty pleasure for me, since I generally don't watch reality shows, and this is something I really enjoy even if I'm not invested in the fandom (which like many fandoms can be very yikes). This year it was time for the Australian/New Zealand (Aotearoa) queens to show their stuff, although it's been met with mixed reactions. Covid restrictions didn't allow for guest judges, relegating them to mere cameos via video calls, and its clear that Ru and Michelle really don't quite get all the cultural nuances - Aussie judge Rhys Nicholson was however always delightful. But it wouldn't be Australia without a racism scandal, with the great disappointment of the two queens of colour eliminated first, and one queen having done blackface in the recent past yet making it all the way to the top four.
In the end, the only viable and deserving winner was last Kiwi standing Kita Mean, and it was pure joy to see her get crowned. I do hope they fix the bugs and indeed do another season to better showcase AU/NZ talent.
Writing
A far more productive month - to try and get out of my writing funk I had a goal to try and write every day, even if it was only 100 words. While I didn't quite achieve a consecutive month, I did get a pretty good average, at least got something posted and two others nearly there.
The Lady of the Lake - 2441 words, Chapter 4 posted.
Against the Dying of the Light - 2745 words
Turn Your Face to the Sun - 1752 words.
Here I Go Again - 1144 words
Total words this month: 8082
Total words this year: 35,551

nice views, both of you!!! for me, it's:
fall fair suite - i love the mix of horror and carnival aspects, the anger expressed by the kids, the progression from the shock to this purgatory to peace (which look is lowkey my least favourite bit, i like the return to it in "just a ride" but i don't like it being a consistent thread) to this carnival-esque regret and fall into karnak's domain. also "fall not fair, this ride goes where ah-ah-ahhhhh"? beloved. i think it's the best portrayal of their mortal fear. and, fine, i like how my two favourite ships dance together.
waiting for the drop - i really like the carnival through line and how that theme develops from excited at the start to this hazy feeling at the end. also ocean and constance at the end singing "all those coloured lights uh-oh, i gotta wear shades cuz the future's so bright, gravity's pulling me down, i'll never put my feet on the ground, life was about to start, we never should've got into that rickety cart" is such a great way to show how their mentalities switch from "fun ride, our whole lives are ahead of us" to "fuck". i also like how ocean has that staging setting her apart, showing how she *knows* (like the "it did not feel safe at all"). the thing is, constance is singing with her (she isn't fearful, the staging just has her giving ricky their crutches), so i like to see it as them having a conversation at first that develops into ocean panicking and constance going "sure ocean" (her sort of thinking, i'll never put my feet on the ground, yeah i'm fine with that, but not exactly sharing the regret). i also like mischa and noel's repeated "cotton candy and rancid beers" because even though the drinking scene is cut out of this version, i'm a fan of that hint of that aspect of their relationship.
uranium suite/tragic fact - i don't particularly love the tune of "uranium suite" but i love the very dramatic contrast between "this town is great" (putting words into their mouths) and "this town fucking sucks" (again putting words into their mouths, but this time it's what they believe). i like the robotic choreography, it reminds me of the mines and how stuck they are. i love the horror on their faces when karnak has his monologue, and "the town was broke by '99" is chilling for me personally. noel's "build yourself a funeral pyre, so many stimulating things to do" has such bitterness in his voice and i think i like that version more than that same melody of "dead, we're done, there's no undoing, nothing left to do except to rot" (but both are amazing, wonderful, king shit)
uranium suite - part of this might be because i prefer things that were performed live over album versions, i've always been that way. i've already mentioned how i don't like the choir piece, but the way it's mixed, i just don't love the girls' "empty streets of empty shops..." at the end, it's just a bit high to me that feels like it clashes more with the boys' than it blends. but i'm also aware that's just a preference i consistently have and isn't a marker of quality. i do think that the end is the best part: "uranium our dead in dive, we'll never leave this town alive, no we will never leave this town at all". i love how it's accented and builds up the tension, karnak seems creepier, the children asking "did we finally leave our town?" is both heartbreaking and a nice philosophical question, did they? does death count as leaving? i don't know. it's not bad, and it is the one i heard last, so that could just be bias coming into play!!!
Ok so everyone be nice and don’t judge anyone else for opinions!
Let me know what your ranks are for RTC opening songs!!!
Mine are
1. Fall Fair Suite (I love the choreography, and each of the choir members barring Jane gets a solo part and we get a little insight to their characters! It also sounds the most like an actual choir in the beginning, and the harmonies are AMAZING)
2. Uranium Suite (Can’t tell on choreo bc I can only find the cast recording, but this is also a really good song and fits the vibe of the musical. I love the harmonies and singing along to it! We also get a little tidbit about what life is like in Uranium)
3. Waiting for the Drop (I like this song, don’t get me wrong, but I really don’t think it fits the vibe of the musical, and we don’t learn anything from it. The choreo is really good though!)
4. Uranium Suite/Tragic Fact (I have to be honest, I don’t particularly like this song. The choreo is… interesting. It feels very robotic and not like the choir. I also don’t love the whole working at the mall bit, it feels weird to me.)

Quick Thoughts on TRR Book 3 Chapter 11
• Again, fam, I'm not entirely sure I'll have this QT out in time but I hope I will. My surgery has been fixed for next Thursday, and I'd like to finish whatever I can before I leave for hospital. It's going to be hard, but fingers crossed I can get it done.
Here is Part 2 of Chapter 11's Quick Thoughts once you're through with this one!
• I'm noticing a narrative pattern here! Whenever something devastating is happening right in front of us (like the two attacks in the palace) they immediately pick up from where they left off in the previous chapter, bring that portion to its dramatic conclusion, and then play the opening theme (in this case, it's the sad version of the TRR title track). They used a similar narrative format in Chapter 1 of this book.
• This is also the third time the sad TRR track plays in the book. The only time it was played sans the narrative style of Chapter 1 and Chapter 10's openings, was in Chapter 6, after the orchard at Applewood was burned. All at points of time when all hope seems to be lost, before our lead characters get up, dust themselves off, and resolve to keep going despite everything and everyone against them.
• It was pretty clear that Constantine would sacrifice his life in this chapter, given the way he was talking at the end of the last one. It's the kind of symbolic send-off one tends to write for a character one knows will die sooner than he anticipates. Which is why even though I'm kinda pissed that Leo comes now when everything seems safe, I understand why having him there is so important. In the narrative, Leo is an important part of the closure that comes before Constantine's demise.
Tumblr media
A few notes on Constantine's demise:
1. He's right about one thing: it definitely is a better end for him. He dies a hero. Cordonia never finds out that he was going to die anyway. No one gets to know what he did to the future Queen/newest Duchess either. I'm still going to be unhappy about this because it's a way better end than the man deserves.
2. I know I would find it disturbing if the man who arranged for me to be harmed in multiple ways in his own house was hailed a hero during his funeral, with only me and a handful of other people knowing he had done, and without the option of ever opening up about who was really behind it. I don't know about you, but my MC Esther would definitely feel conflicted about that.
3. Also..."everything I did, it was for you...whether or not it was right". Sorry Constantine, but that's a load of bullshit. After all this time, this man is still making excuses just before he dies. Liam answered this brilliantly in the last book - Constantine had a choice. He always had a choice. There were other, better ways of getting the MC out of the competition if that was his goal but no, his mind went straight to privacy violations and assault.
4. Also, while he pledged to help us under pressure from Liam, the fact remains that the brunt of his actions were borne by other people. The MC's name was dragged into the mud and SHE had to run around and make all the effort of setting it right. Liam was forced into a loveless match that would have culminated in a disastrous marriage had Tariq not cooperated, and he had to work on figuring out who was behind this not knowing his own family was involved. In all this, Constantine did all the work of making his own home as unsafe for his guest as it could possibly get, and very little of the work in restoring her reputation in the eyes of all of Cordonia. Did he apologize? Sure he did. But that doesn't change a damned thing. It doesn't change the fact that he sowed evil and left it for other people to reap.
5. I find his last line to Liam quite poignant though. "You are Cordonia". That's a very loaded statement, and a very accurate one. And I think if there is anything that can keep Liam strong and carry him forward, it's that. No one in this book is as immersed in the culture, history and spirit of Cordonia as Liam is - which is why he makes the best king for the nation. Because he knows it intimately and cares for it, he knows what this country needs so it can heal. Even if it takes a while for Liam to realize that himself.
6. So long, old man.
• Title: Cold Fire. Kinda fitting, considering our tour has now moved to Lythikos, but the 'heat' of the tensions within the court have turned up several notches. It could also refer to that sick, sick burn Drake delivered to Madeleine today though 😂😂😂
• Alternative titles:
Drink What Everyone Else Is Drinking. Good For Health.
Drake Doesn't Need A Sword to Slay Assholes. Nor Does Olivia, Apparently.
@callmetippytumbles suggested a shorter and better alternative title to that one, and it's: Drake Roasts And Gets Roasted.
• I was hoping we would spend at least a chapter in the Capitol and, yknow, actually help Liam work through his grief, but nope. Flash-forward it is.
• Bastien is in hospital now, with injuries sustained from escorting people out of the palace, so Mara (who apparently hasn't been sleeping since the attack) is the one doing the debriefing on his behalf.
• It's clear to Liam and our friends NOW that whoever has been conspiring against us was a part of the Unity Tour and working from the inside (bruh, I could have told you that long ago). I'm thinking now that if Neville is part of this plan, perhaps the duel was meant to serve as a distraction so arrangements could be made within the time that the entire court was out in the courtyard. Just a theory.
• This was also alluded to in Perfect Match, when one of Nadia's alternative identities is Steel, a guest in the 'royal's tour who is actually an assassin.
Tumblr media
This is perhaps the closest we get to Liam confessing how much all this has been affecting him, and sadly enough, he doesn't have enough time to really work through his grief. The suggestion to continue to Lythikos and get their answers there comes from Liam, and he speaks of it as something Constantine would have wanted. It isn't entirely healthy, but I think this is the way Liam has been brought up and it's hard for him to give himself time to be vulnerable, to give himself the space to grieve properly. Because now more than ever he has an entire country depending on him, and the royal family is known for projecting displays of strength and stoicism even if they don't feel it. It's not a good way of working through one's issues, but it's probably the only way Liam knows to deal with his trauma. I feel like in a lot of ways he's reliving especially the assassination attempt that happened earlier, but worse because someone he loved actually died this time. I'd definitely see some signs of PTSD at work here, even if it's suppressed. Particularly given that he speaks of feeling empty.
Tumblr media
Waitaminute...are you telling me that Esther, the future Queen of Cordonia, is going to attend a Ball, her fiancé's father's funeral, a meeting, and an entire trip to Lythikos in this fever dream of a costume???
Tumblr media
Fine. Fine, Esther, I give up. Fanta bottle inspired Stephanie Seymour gown it is 🙄
• What Madeleine says about the effect the MC has (particularly if the MC chooses all the right options during the tour) on people is very very similar to the last thing Constantine said before he died:
Tumblr media
I'm guessing in a lot of ways this is seen as the MC's personal victory. Constantine and Madeleine were the two people who believed least that the MC had anything of value to give if she became Queen or a person of power in Cordonian politics. It was a long hard road to achieving this level of confidence even in her naysayers, so in a lot of ways the MC now truly is a unifying factor. Which makes me wonder what they say if you do a gag-run instead where the MC fails miserably during the tour. I know @boneandfur is doing such a playthrough as of now, but I don't know exactly if Madeleine and Constantine's words to her change in such an eventuality.
Tumblr media
OMG. The design team is KILLING IT with the OOTD this week! It's gorgeous, and it tells us plenty about the Lythikos duchy and the Nevrakis House! For those of you who haven't read my House Sigils essay, I theorized that red was one of the house tinctures (colours), and that the sigil was either a sword or a spider. The flaming sword is attached to the gown (possibly as a brooch pin). @i-dream-so-i-write and I discussed this, and it was she who pointed out that Diavolos signature weapon was the flaming sword, as can be seen from the above picture. I'm not sure which metallic colour would form the second colour/tincture, but evidence seems to be learning more towards silver (there is a little gold on the brooch-sword, so it could be either). Tldr: I love this gown. It has that grace and effortless style that I've come to associate with Nevrakis fashion.
• Olivia is wearing the gown she wore for her Coronation. Come to think of it, the Scarlet Duchess moniker that Olivia got would refer to way more than her fashion. Given that it's one of her house colours and she was proud to be a Nevrakis especially at the time, Scarlet Duchess would mean so much to her. So much.
• So we're seated in the front and served fresh, piping hot food. SWEET! XD This time we get to order stuff. Maxwell gets fondue, Hana gets glazed salmon and Drake has ordered for ribs.
• Olivia: I had to request a few changes for your more...rustic palette.
Drake: Are you expecting a thanks? Because you're not getting one.
You're in for the meal of your life, Walker 😂
Tumblr media
If you've never liked Olivia at all before? This scene in reason enough 😂😂😂
• Lucretia drops by to make more heavy hints about marriage prospects for Olivia (including relief that her niece wasn't scarred from rubble. How...caring).
• Olivia and Liam then perform the opening dance (like they did during the social season) and Liam takes this opportunity to find out what she knows. He gets little, beyond her worries about having to marry someone Lucretia will pick for her. Hana points out that perhaps "one has to wonder who Lucretia wants Olivia to marry". Good question.
• But before that, Kiara comes up to the MC to tell her she will be withdrawing from court after the Winter Festival ends. Kiara's argument is sound - she had already extended her public support and seems to be attending the wedding. But now is a dangerous time to be a part of the court, and Kiara's doing what she can to stay safe. Remember, she was the only noblewoman in court injured during the attack at Homecoming Ball, a fact that was given hardly a minute of consideration before the MC "convinced" her to join them again.
• Hana mentions that perhaps they can speak to her before she returns. I hope this means we will FINALLY address what happened to Kiara and look into possible - very valid - concerns about her safety. This is something we SHOULD have been talking about when we meet her at Castelserraillian, but no. PB decided to create a whole new character instead just so Kiara wouldn't get the attention she deserved as a character.
• Then again, she is seen as a suspect in a way none of the other court ladies (besides Olivia, and she's only viewed as such because of her family history) are. Sigh. The MC gets the option to speculate that she "knows something" and Drake gets to answer that "we must suspect everyone". DRAKE. Who ALSO got wounded at the same Ball that she was wounded in. Ugh. I mean I shouldn't be surprised considering he gets angry about people not supporting Liam barely hours after he got shot, but he's friends with the King. Kiara is not, and if she gets wounded again wouldn't it be their fault for not addressing the concerns she and her family had in the first place? Apparently Penelope's and Madeleine's concerns should be given ample consideration, but Kiara? Kiara who?? Oh right, Penelope's love interest's sister 😠 While we're at it, let's just make her suspicious for no reason!
• CONGRATULATIONS MAXWELL STANS on getting your first character development scene! There isn't a lot of overt character development but the scene does show us how observant and resourceful Maxwell is, pointing out the hole in the armoury wall that will allow us to overhear people's conversations and give us a better idea of who we should suspect. It does this while still establishing him as goofy, fun-living and always ready to live life king-size.
• Maxwell and the MC engage in what is known in European folklore as an apple-shot (Apfelschuss in German. The most popular folk tale involving this feat of archery is that of William Tell, a Swiss folk hero, who was ordered to shoot an apple from the top of his son's head by a cruel nobleman named Albrecht Gessler. Thankfully, he succeeded).
• Oooh now comes my favourite part: the weapons!
Tumblr media
• This is an amazing Easter Egg in two ways if you're a TCaTF fan. One is that it reminds me SO MUCH of when Val gets to be the narrator, which is ALWAYS fun! Case in point are the names she gives the Iron Empire soldiers at Ennan: Pointy, Mr Fancy, Birdface, Grumpy and That Other Guy. Here, the MC gives names to all the weapons.
• So if you're someone who has played TCaTF and forgotten the weapons, no problem! I'm here to list out what these weapons are actually called, where they originated from and how Kenna (if the reader pays) gets them!
• The Weirdly Fancy Dagger is the Black Asps Dagger (which I think might be venom-tipped, like Adder's Fang) which Raydan gets from a Black Asp agent when he is imprisoned under Azura's orders. I see this weapon as being associated most with Abanthus/Lythikos in this list of weapons, because it comes from Adder's team of Lykos spies and assassins, and eventually (if Kenna chooses so) Adder can get to rule over this kingdom either alone or alongside Princess Zenobia (or not at all).
The Dragon Face Hammer! is actually the famous Wave Hammer, made by Kailani Keawe of Ebrimel - a fierce warrior and a skilled craftswoman - from Heart Oak Wood sneaked in from Thorngate. Heart Oak has all the appearance of wood with all the strength of metal, and makes for an amazing secret weapon.
The Ram Head Thing is Crown Guardian Leon Stirling's signature weapon - The Ram's Head Mace. This is a weapon clearly associated with Stormholt as Queen Adriana bequeathed it to him. Leon gets to pass it down to Kenna upon his death, if she so chooses. This mace is strong enough to crush armour, and Leon won the tournament at Ducitora with it before Azura killed him.
The Skull...Flail? is Val Greaves' signature weapon, The Deadman's Flail, which is powerful enough to crush armour. Kenna can use this weapon in her fight against Severin Cale, Leader of the Mercenaries. Val herself uses it often in battle.
The polo mallet is just...there.
• Ooh finally! It's time to investigative.
1. Madeleine approaching a man the MC has rejected in favour of her current fiancé. If you're marrying Liam, this man is Drake and he gets to roast Madeleine like she's never been roasted before ("Liam does get what he wants. That means he also gets to throw away what he doesn't want"). If you're marrying Drake, Hana or Maxwell, she is talking to Liam, addressing the king-sized elephant in the room. Liam doesn't pull any extra punches - he just looks extra annoyed and tells her he's "had other matters to attend to". It may seem like a weak defense in comparison to Drake's explosive comeback, but to be fair the man is going through some crazy shit here, and I don't think anyone in that state can actually expand enough thought to form a rebuttal at all. I doubt he'd have either the inclination or energy to actually respond with more than "I've had other matters to attend to". It's particularly awkward if your LI is Maxwell because he is standing right next to you hearing all this, but that hardly reflects in his dialogue. Basically, I view this sequence as telling us more about Madeleine than about the men: she may have changed a tiny bit, but she's still just a huge shit-stirrer.
Possibly, this might be set up for the apology that will ensue if we save Madeleine's backstabbing ass next chapter. It'll be something along the lines of "oh forgive me, I was so wrong, what I did was so wrong, I'll never do that again" etc etc yadda yadda getouttamyfaceyoufakeassbitch.
Also, I believe that the part of the reason Drake delivered that zinger to Madeleine was because he was still stinging from Olivia's burn at dinner 😂
2. While there are very few differences between the first and last conversations, the second conversation changes drastically depending on who your LI is.
a. If your LI is Liam, Hakim comes up to Liam, gives him his condolences for Constantine's death, and then comments positively on Esther and the upcoming wedding, which leads to a discussion between the MC and Maxwell about wedding preparations. I think this is mostly because Kiara never really interacts with Liam, so they got Hakim to do the honors. Over here though, Hakim and Liam's conversation about the wedding forms only a tiny portion of the conversation, as opposed to the entire thing.
b. If your LI is Hana, Kiara and Hana have a lovely, lighthearted conversation about the latter's upcoming wedding. Kiara expresses great happiness at Hana getting married to the MC, and Hana confesses to being so nervous she constantly dreams about it. I love the way Hana and Kiara's friendship is written here: how open Hana is with Kiara and how encouraging and supportive Kiara is towards Hana. I think it's so beautiful to see 😭
c. If your LI is Maxwell? It's Hana and Kiara again, this time speculating what the MC's wedding to Maxwell will be like. Kiara confesses that she plans to skip a cousin's reception on the same day by pretending to be ill, just so she can attend their reception instead. Together they discuss what surprises the Beaumonts might spring during the reception - from dance-offs to ball pits to hot air balloons filled with kittens. Here too, it's a lovely moment - two of the smartest court members having fun talking about weddings.
d. If your LI is Drake, Kiara talks to him instead. First about the offerings at the dessert buffet, then about the wedding. Kiara is overly chirpy and happy and excited about the wedding, and Drake tenses up when she turns the topic towards the wedding preparations, because those are "complicated". Of course, if you do the LI scene with him at the ice palace, you will find out that he doesn't like talking about it because he would rather keep things simple and focus on his bride, and the nobility is all about perfection and elaborate preparations. Very possibly the Kiara-Drake conversation was written this way as a lead-up to his conversation with the MC at the snow palace. (and perhaps also to dissuade people who would like to ship Drake and Kiara, especially given the backlash Kiara got from fans just for having a crush on the man).
The main focus of this conversation of course is to give out the message that the MC's upcoming wedding is something that still excites people, and that even people afraid of staying in court don't want to miss it.
3. The third conversation between Olivia and Lucretia is given the suspicious sounding music from ES, and begins with Lucretia trying to find out more about the MC. Olivia doesn't tell her much beyond what everyone else knows, and Lucretia leaves her with this cryptic statement:
Tumblr media
I feel we're going to have a Big Reveal about what actually happened to the Nevrakises and whether they really were traitors or not.
• With that we finish our little stint at investigation, and in comes our next chance to spend diamonds on our respective LIs!
• I love how Liam's outdoor kink has been referenced two chapters in a row now 😂
Tumblr media
(Screenshots: @kennaxval for Hana, @mariamatsuo for Drake and the Vika Avey YouTube channel for Maxwell).
Again, like the previous scene, the LIs have their own individual stamp over their ice palace scene. The beauty of it is not just that they all seem different in the way they make love to the MC, but that their reactions to the ice palace itself vary from LI to LI.
Liam gives us a legend. He tells us about the prevalent pre-wedding tradition in Lythikos, where an engaged couple would have their village build them an ice palace the following winter. Kind of like a seasonal barn-raising, which also involves a community coming together to build something for the couple. It says plenty about Lythikos and its people (I won't elaborate because at some point I'm going to be writing essays again). But it also confirms for us how immersed in Cordonian culture Liam is, and how much his Queen will learn when she is with him.
Hana gives us a fairytale. She tells us a story her mother used to read to her at night, about a frozen kingdom, an ice palace and a princess with a frozen heart, which thawed the moment she found true love. The fairytale Hana tells us bears similarities to Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen", and more to the film it inspired, Frozen. But snow maidens are a staple of certain European cultures (particularly Norwegian and Slavic legend), so it could be a mix of many stories. It's fitting that Hana relates the ice palace to a story, connected as she is to literature and folklore and romance. In a lot of ways, hidden beneath the fable of the ice princess is Hana's own story.
Drake gives us a memory. As a follow-through to the conversation between him and Kiara in Maxwell's armoury scene if the reader bought it (unbeknownst to him, because he doesn't know the MC was overhearing them) he gets to be more open about not being very interested in planning weddings. His ideal would have been to take his bride to his mother's ranch in Texas for a wedding very reminiscent of his parents' union, and were Cordonia not in this condition that's exactly what he would have done. It's very like Drake, whose most powerful emotional associations are connected to his once-happy childhood and his memories of his parents, particularly his father.
Maxwell gives us an gift, made with his own hands. When he brings the MC to the ice palace, he suggests creating ice sculptures, and both make one of each other. It's a sweet, funny and affectionate scene, with both of them exchanging cute banter about Maxwell's "secret affair" with "Ice MC" and his tongue getting stuck in ice while pretending to kiss her 😂 It's very Maxwell. He's very hands-on, likes to do fun things, likes to entertain. And that's exactly the vibe I'm getting here.
The love scenes are tender and sweet and hot, and I think each of these scenes is worth the diamonds you'll spend. The scenes are tailored perfectly to fit the personalities of each LI. This is exactly what I hoped to see with scenes like the bathtub scene at the beginning of the book, and the spa scene. If they continue with this kind of quality content going forward, then I'm really really glad they took that hiatus.
• Okay we're back to the ballroom now. With Madeleine super drunk on...um...some pineapple drink.
• Madeleine is the only person to have the pineapple drink, and she seems to have an affinity for pineapple's since Maxwell offered her that Pineapple Paradise Punch in Fydelia. Everyone else is drinking Lythikos Nog.
• Madeleine collapses in the middle of Olivia's speech!
• The security detail uses "Code Locusta" to refer to poisons. Which is fitting, because Locusta was a very notorious maker of poisons during the time of Claudius and Nero (around AD 54 was when she contributed to the assassination of Emperor Claudius, and his son Brittanicus a year later). She was not only someone who was an expert on poisons and hired for that purpose, but also someone who used her skills to bring down royalty at the behest of their enemies. This could be a bit of a stretch, but I think this ties in symbolically with the plot of the movie scene in Liam's playthrough, where the enemy of the throne is someone who also can claim to be a royal. Especially considering poisons have been used to kill Liam's mother, and now to kill a supporter of the Crown and the MC, and a member of a very powerful Cordonian noble house. And yet...the other noble house - the Nevrakis family of Lythikos - stays untouched.
• The last time I recall "Locusta" being used in literature was in Alexandre Dumas' (père) The Count of Monte Cristo. A chapter of this book, in which a woman attempts to poison her stepdaughter so the family fortune could be passed on to her son, was titled Locusta as well.
• Something is rotten in the state of Denmark, folks. Or should I say, in the Kingdom of. Cordonia?
• Can I just say I love the parallels between Lythikos in Book 1 and now? We learned a little about Olivia's past in passing from Liam here, and now it will hit us in full force in the form of Lucretia. Constantine didn't seem to be in Lythikos, and returned to tell Liam that he was going to die soon, and now we visit the same estate after he has given his life to save his son.
Olivia gave us the worst place and the worst treatment then, and the best now. We convinced Kiara to support us in this very ballroom, and perhaps we might have to do so now too. It was here that Madeleine proudly claimed she was neither unrefined or insecure...but now she doesn't care about propriety.
I recall it was here for the first time that Maxwell stans were given the chance to express affection towards him, and it's here that they now get his first character development scene in Book 3. Most of all...it was here that the initial 3 LIs started to open up to us, in different ways, (if we paid) and now we return...an engaged couple - shedding all our layers and keeping each other warm in the cold (again, if we pay). I have many fond memories of Lythikos, and this chapter definitely brought me back there xD
• Tumblr isn't allowing me to write further for this post, so I will be writing my theories and who I believe is involved in the next post.
