as much as i LOVE the ending to mob psycho 100 (truly a beautiful way to wrap everything up) the one thing that bothers me most is shou’s character development
I think it’s specifically because of his lack of screen time and ONE trying to keep the manga 100 chapters long but he really shot himself in the foot with that. Mostly everyone was written well but I feel like he ran out of time to write everything he really wanted (remember that off handed remark about an esper awakening from Claws horrifying chambers? never brought up again). I feel like for the most part, every other character has a satisfying ending. It aligns with their goals. Serizawa finally feels like he is contributing good to society. Teru understands he isn’t special but hey, nobody is. Reigen isn’t alone anymore. Ritsu and Mob have come to accept Mob for who he is and have started the process of moving on from their trauma. Shou has… well he beat his father. but that wasn’t really him. That was Mob. He spent his whole life coming up with ways to get Toichiro to see some sense and in the end, it had to be someone else. Not him. Not his son. Do you think he ever moved on from that? Do you think he knows he has to? He can technically live his life “normally” now but can he? We can’t even know how he’s dealing with everything because he doesn’t show up in season three at all until like episode 11 (NOT counting the maid cafe scene although it was undeniably really funny). and the thing he takes away from his experience fighting Mob?
BROTHER THEY MADE A WHOLE SHOW ABOUT WHY YOU SHOULDN’T DO THAT. YOU’RE IN THAT SHOW. It almost feels like he’s going backwards??? Like I understand where he’s coming from, and for my own peace of mind i’ve been trying to think he meant it for like violence. but i cannot stop thinking of a Shou that quit using his powers entirely. i literally stopped typing this post and stared at the ceiling rn because of it. like i’m not crazy right?? i can’t be the only one who feels like something is missing about his character??? that CAN’T be what he walks away with
Also this might be a “and the curtains were blue” moment but i also want to talk about this omake
Yeah sure it’s devastating but then I actually started thinking about it. The title is called “Suzuki Shou 13 Years old.” Which is interesting to me because Shou was 12 almost the whole story. His birthday is in december (RIP). He turned 13 like just a month before the confession arc took place. The only thing i don’t know is if he has this dream before or after. I really hope it’s before because if he had this dream post confession arc then ouch???? ?? because if it’s after then that means he clearly hasn’t moved on from everything?? he’s still being haunted by his origin?? and we’re never gonna see him ever move on?? ONE i’m going to kill you and then kill you again make a shou spin off NEOW

MOB THOUGHTS EATING ME ALIVE:
yes yes we all make fun of how Ritsu thinks about his brother all the time but so does Mob. It's the convenience store where he bought candies with Ritsu, hence all the rage directed at the looters.
Ritsu kinda like Ember's Zuko. He hates being wrong, but he hates being right even more.
love that Mob understands the concept of specialization and comparative advantage. He would understand microeconomics so well

Touichirou jokes around and is joked with (kinda) with the Super 5. He's emotionally honest and communicative with them. Informal too. Probably because he doesn't care about their opinion of him.

No wonder Shou thinks his dad is cringe, imagine hearing this sort of advice sincerely from his dad for YEARS. Bet his mom heard it from Shou secondhand and was like don't listen to your dad that's some middle school mindset. I know you don't know what middle school is but trust your mother on this. Obviously we know why Touichirou flashback-ed to when his wife left. But why did he think about the cat / gentle moment?

Mob Psycho 100: The Stage Play 3 - Final performance content spoilers
Here are all the notes I compiled after getting the chance to see the final performance for ‘Mob Psycho 100: The Stage Play - A Clash with Claw’s Seventh Division!’ live. Note this is essentially a write-up of the play from beginning to end - this will also likely be the version of the play that is used for the DVD release in December. I will also edit this when the recording becomes available for viewing and I can gain some clarity on sections I missed...
PRE-SHOW
- Reigen and Mob do a pre-show announcement relating to covid prevention measures (referred to not by name as Covid but an evil spirit) plus standard theatre etiquette rules (don’t use your phone, put it on silent, etc.)
SHOW
- Begins where stage 2 left off as a ‘Previously…’ segment for the audience. We once again witness Koyama knocking Mob out with the spray and kidnapping Ritsu.
- In the Teru/Dimple/Mob discussion part of the stage 2 recap, Teru takes the bird’s nest off his head and throws it off stage - we hear the birds within fly away.
- ((We immediately see how the reduced audience affects the play - a funny physical gag where Teru and Dimple bash heads happens but this receives no response from the audience))
- We reach the end of stage 2 recap with Mob stating he’ll destroy Claw as he does at the end of stage 2. The screen goes black and we hear the echo of a voice saying ‘Give [it] back… give [it] back, [It’s] mine, give [it] back…’ - this is implied to be Mob talking about Ritsu but the lights turn on to reveal S&S and turns out it’s Shou talking to Reigen about Touichirou’s card
- Reigen gives the card back to Shou, calls him a ‘baggy-clothed asshole’ and tells him to leave since Reigen is busy. Reigen puts his feet up on his desk and goes on his phone, leading to;
S: “What are you doing?”
R: “Reading the news.”
S: “You’re not busy, you’re bored!”
- Shou mentions that he’s also got 10k yen missing from his wallet and accuses Reigen of stealing it - Reigen insists he didn’t but starts doubting himself
- When Shou leaves, Reigen salt splashes in his direction (An English translation is now given under each of Reigen’s special moves ala Olympic parody)
-Reigen calls Mob, leading back to the Mob/Dimple/Teru scene - Terada and his cronies enter and Mob tells Reigen he can’t talk right now, hang up which leads to…

OPENING
- Yoru no Honki Dance - Call Out (as the previous two plays)
- Action takes place on the upper and lower stage - Ritsu and the lab kids on the lower stage with Ritsu in anguish with Mob, Teru, Dimple on the top stage
- Action shot with the show’s “Yeah!” line focuses on Reigen and Mob on the top level

- Teru tortures Terada with a taser rather than water - Terada is also wearing a ballgag with multiple kazoos inside it leading to a great sound whenever he screams
- Mob and Dimple are terrified of Teru’s taser torture whenever he does it
- Matsuo’s performance is sensual and slimy - great stage presence
- Ishiguro’s voice is distorted using a pitch filter resulting in something creepy rather than the female voice used in the anime
- Ritsu and the lab kids are seen in the jail cell - great banter with them and their Claw guard (Guard to Rei: “I won’t hit you because you’re a girl!” Kids: “A gentleman!”). Guard tells them they won’t get any food and they start rioting
- Mutou is VERY creepy and accompanied by terrifying music - he skulks around the stage with his ridiculous silicone chin
- When Mutou “kills” Kaito off screen we get a ridiculous extended segment featuring Daichi reacting to what is initially cries of his brother’s pain that turn into pleasure as if he is getting a massage - then turns back into pain
- Kaito is wheeled back on in a luggage/weight carrier with 4 knives in his chest
- Teru vs Terada is visually very fun - movement choreography is great, lots of Teru’s dance techniques that got cut from the anime
- Back in the jail scene Ritsu states he doesn’t remember the kids names so they re-introduce themselves to the audience
- Asahi and Hoshino heating up the spoon/bending spoon/on repeat is very well performed
- Ritsu tries to high-five with with one of the other kids when they escape the jail but finds he has no-one to do it with :(
- Back to Dimple/Mob/Teru - when Dimple-chan(puppet) says “Oh who’s that good looking guy? A model?”, Nadagi pulls a whole bunch of model poses
- When Teru tries to knock the security guard out he screams for AGES leading to one of the funniest moments in the play - he finally is knocked out but when Dimple tries to possess him he takes ages to be possessed - Taa (Teru) breaks character completely and doubles over laughing and Itou (Mob) refuses to face the audience making it clear he is losing it as well
- Muraki is creepy looking but his cloak is see-through and sparkly - his actor plays him as quite a timid guy
- Great visual gag with Mob throwing Koyama around and then sending him through the stage wall
- Ishiguro has a moment where he talks to the audience/the new recruits where he shows off the Claw face mask available as part of the merch
- Great fight choreography between SG!Dimple and Gen (played by Baba) - ends with SG!Dimple pulling his trousers down
- Teru tasing people left and right in this play…
- Great stage effects in Teru vs Miyagawa - Teru tases Miyagawa as well
- Tsuchiya calming down Mukai is lovely - followed by Mukai finding a puppet that she believes hasn’t been destroyed by Mob and getting excited - but the head rolls off so she breaks down crying again
- ((My stream cut here so I didn’t see the start of the Ritsu vs Shou interaction and whether or not he recognised Shou from their interaction in stage 2))
- We see a little Shou vs Ritsu - Ritsu flings an array of spoons at Shou - Shou lands a punch that sends Ritsu off stage
- Character design for Takeuchi has been corrected slightly from the anime
- Matsuo vs SG!Dimple stage effects are great. They’re both very flashy actors which creates fantastic visual comedy
- Matsuo takes off his jacket like he’s at a strip club - it’s all very flamboyant and fun
- ((Stream cut again so I didn’t actually see the joke, but some kind of adlib happens with Reigen in the taxi scene that causes Baba to break character))
- When Mob uses his powers to blow Takeuchi away someone comes on stage with a leafblower to blow his hair away
- Screen goes black and we cut back to Shou delivering the final blow on Ritsu. Shou says someone interesting is coming and leaves stage for Mob’s entrance
- Mob finds Ritsu passed out and holds him, finds he’s breathing but won’t forgive who did this to him
- Mutou enters and stalks around the back and creates the image of Ritsu dead on the floor with a knife in his chest for Mob which causes his freak out
- “What a great pair of brothers” - Shou leaning over Mob and Ritsu’s passed out bodies
- Shou floats Mob and Ritsu into the room with Sakurai/Teru/Ishiguro
- Small cut away to Reigen - he sees 500 yen on the ground and immediately runs to go pick it up
- Mob and Ritsu’s hug is very emotional - Ritsu is more panicked asking Mob if he’s okay and Mob is more emotional responding than the anime
- Mob pats Ritsu’s head to calm him down
- Visual gag where Shou steps on Ishiguro’s shoe - Ishiguro freaks out trying to clean it and Muraki offers emotional support
- Guy walks into the room with Sakurai/Muraki/Ishiguro/Matsuo/Shou and informs them “The boss is coming”, which piques Shou’s interest and he comes along to meet “the boss”
- Play then gives us a “5 minutes earlier” scene. Baba’s performance in the Claw break-in is more on the eccentric/aggressive side than the calmer calculating tone Sakurai had - changes the atmosphere for the scene
- The whole scene with Reigen saving the lab kids is redone to be so eccentric with everyone chanting BOSS! BOSS! BOSS! at the end for Reigen
- When Reigen starts making a comment about Teru’s wig and cuts himself off to not offend him, he goes to Mob like “wtf” and Mob whispers in his ear what happened
- Shou included in the scene when Ishiguro etc. face off against Reigen
- ((ARGH my stream cut out again, when it came back Shou had moved over to Reigen’s side - probably some good dialogue there between them that I missed))
- Shou says to Reigen ‘Give me back my 10,000 yen’ - Shou decides to stand back to watch the show
- When Ishiguro attacks, Mob protects Shou as well as everyone else
- We have Shou/Teru/Mob/Ritsu/Reigen all on one side vs the Claw guys on the other (Ishiguro/Sakurai/Muraki/Matsuo)
- When Reigen does his Anti-Esper Drop Kick, they choose to translate this in English as “Dropkick to the espers”
- Shou: ‘You’re really taking [Muraki] on? lol’ Reigen: ‘Shut UP you brat’
- When Sakurai attacks Reigen (first time), Ritsu helps him up
- Lots of good banter between Shou and Reigen (”Stop calling me ‘old guy!’”)
- Shou sits to the side and enjoys the show while Sakurai/Muraki/Ishiguro/Matuso vs Reigen/Mob/Ritsu/Teru happens, makes some comments (ie. “Damn you’re in a pinch, whatcha gonna do now?”)
- When Reigen is getting sucked up by the anti gravity bubble, Shou helps Teru/Mob/Ritsu out with saving him
- Sakurai cutting off Teru’s wig is made into such a Dramatic moment
- Shou joins the fight against Ishiguro - Ishiguro manages to knock him out of the field and Reigen expresses concern (‘Oh crap! Kid are you okay!’)
- Lots of stage theatrics - now that Shou is no longer in play scene plays out as it does in the anime
- Lots of Reigen protecting Mob and leading him away from danger until the climactic moment where Mob decides to fight
- Mob’s scream of ‘Shishou!!!’ is filled with emotion - Reigen collapses quickly and without theatrics, facing the audience
- He doesn’t get a cut in his jacket, nor does he remove it

MORE ISSHO META UNDER THE CUT bc somehow @babovens isn’t sick of me yet :D (definitely spoilers. discussing events of chapters 20+21)
Holy crapola, SO. I am finally going to give my breakdown of one of my favorite moments in Issho. I feel like my thoughts on the scene were much more organized back when I was writing it, but here goes. The scene that I layered like a goddamn onion:
Teru and The Knives
On the surface, the scene where Shimazaki throws Teru into that kitchen supply store looks like a fun nod to canon. And it is. The image of Teru surrounded by knives is one we all know (and probably love in a twisted way). It was something I always wanted to get into the story somehow, and I am overjoyed that I was able to place it at such a pivotal point.
Something I really wanted to explore in Issho was “What would Teru be like if he got all the same lessons that Mob did in canon?” And this scene wrapped it up so perfectly.
-In canon, Teru brandishes the knives but HE is the one to get “hurt”. He’s self centered, and his own malicious actions rebound. Mob isn’t even a threat, but he attacks anyway. In Issho, Shimazaki is a very real threat and Teru is in dire straights. He does not actively seek out the knives, but they are there and he can use them, which makes his following actions all the more meaningful. He does not go through with it. Teru drops the knives and nothing comes of them.
-Instead of thinking about himself, Teru is thinking of Shou. Of the people on the street. Is he hurt? What if Teru hurt someone else? By being present for the events of chapter 5 and Shigeo’s first explosion, something monumental has changed in Teru’s character. Not only can he afford to think of others, but he has a profound fear and respect for another Issho theme: ACCIDENTS.
-Unlike in canon, Issho Reigen actually had some context for when he talked to Mob (and indirectly, Teru) about using your powers responsibly. And he introduced the idea that not only can bad things happen if you point your powers at a person, but accidents can happen even if you don’t. Teru and Mob NEEDED this. Both of them blamed themselves for what happened to Ritsu. Someone had to explain to them that accidents happen and yes, while there are consequences, we can move on and learn how to get ourselves OUT OF SITUATIONS WHERE ACCIDENTS ARE MORE PRONE TO HAPPEN.
-Teru is in huge danger with Shimazaki. He is in a position where HUGE accidents could happen, and the knives, the direct parallel to what Reigen was talking about, is what reminds Teru that there are others around him. That while Teru is the “main character” in trouble here, all those people he ran by on the street are real, live people with their own families. He’s not better than them. People are just people, and how terrible would Teru feel later if he got a bunch of people hurt? He’s seen what hurt people look like. They all look like Ritsu in his head.
-So Teru chooses something else. He drops the knives and he tries to leave the situation. You know. Because IT’S OKAY TO RUN AWAY WHEN THINGS GET BAD.
I feel like I could have explained all that better, but ah well.
While it’s great to see Teru learn Mob’s lessons, let’s see what happens when...
Reigen Exemplifies Mob’s Canon Lessons:
Not going to lie, I had an absolute BLAST writing Reigen with Mob’s powers. Not only was it a fantastic callback to the end of season one, but it really hammered in the lesson that unfortunately, I feel canon fell through with.
That sometimes you need to leave things to the adults.
Issho Reigen is quite a bit different than canon Reigen, especially by this point in the story. He’s had no choice but to grow up quickly to help Teru. And one of my proudest moments was figuring out that I could include THREE of Mob’s canon lines/thoughts/messages in a very short period of time. And that Reigen could be the one to express them.
Mogami could not and would not ever fit into the Issho timeline, but I sure as shit wasn’t going to leave its themes out entirely.
Reigen pushed Suzuki back and marveled at the ease of it. He could lift skyscrapers. He could uproot the entire mountain if he so wished. Mob’s powers weren’t a hurricane, they were an entire universe.
Reigen could do anything.
And Suzuki was putting that kind of unfathomable energy into hurting people. Into facilitating kidnapping and torture and brainwashing.
A sound made its way past Reigen’s lips. A harsh noise saturated with disbelief and distain.
Suzuki crowed. “Are you laughing? Are you getting a taste for how exhilarating this power is? You won’t want to give it back now that you’ve experienced what it’s like to be more than human!”
Reigen narrowed his eyes, fists clenched at his sides.
“I did not laugh, you sick fuck.”
He didn’t wait to see Suzuki’s reaction, grabbing the man by the jacket and burying a knee in his stomach. Followed it up by whipping around and throwing him as far from the base as he could.
If Suzuki was going to use his powers to do terrible things, then Reigen was going to use Mob’s to save people.
Reigen is doing so much more than “using Mob’s powers” here. He is stepping up when all other adults could not. He is protecting the people important to him. He is confronting Toichiro in a way canon Mob could not: emotionally STABLE. He is upset, sure. Of course he is. He’s furious. But he is not out of control. He is not emotionally all over the place the way Mob was. He is angry and focused and mature.
He takes on Toichiro in a way a child could not. And that’s what makes the difference.
The more canon things I could tie into Issho, the better. Canon is incredible, and I didn’t want to miss out on the important messages just because the general circumstances of the story had shifted.
I feel like I have more but they slipped away from me. I’ll be back :D

Mob Psycho Characters Playing Minecraft (Headcanons)
Shigeo
He starts with creative mode, just to get the gist of it, before finally heading into survival but on peaceful. Then he’ll do survival easy mode and just stay on that tier forever, until he feels more confident to up his game a little higher.
Only played because Telepathy club was playing and he heard the word “Mob” and was like; “Did you call me?” and the club goes “nah fam, it Minecraft.” “what’s Minecraft.” Boom he plays.
Most likely to have a farm with a lot of cows
Has a dirt house/villager’s house on the first night and stops at just that.
Not much of a great builder
Takes forever to get diamonds
Dies often, but not too much. Just often enough for him to lose a few good iron pickaxes.
Always goes to bed once it’s night.
Most likely to have a pet cat
He just plays for fun, when he’s bored and stuff. So he doesn’t go as far as to defeating the ender dragon. He’ll travel to the nether though, just for potion making
But he does play a heck more when Teru’s around, or when the Telepathy club invites him.
He awaits for a frog update
Reigen
Jumps into survival hardcore right off the bat after watching one play through
Most likely to have a villager colony and farm
Makes a wooden house with windows and stuff on the first night with a furnace and a crafting table and a bed. The essentials. But he won’t stay in one house often and will move a lot
He can build, but he’s pretty amateur at it, he’s a fast learner though so he could easily replicate houses he see online
He’s the type of guy that never stops mining until he finds diamonds, which means he makes sure he’s at 13-11y in coordinates, has a shit ton of extra pickaxes, and stacks upon stacks of torches. Once he finds them goodies, he heads on home and repeats the cycle
He’ll defeat the ender dragon if he’s bored enough or when someone challenges/pays him to.
Same goes with The Wither
Will skip Minecraft sleep very often and will only go to bed when the phantom starts attacking
Most likely to have many many pet dogs, each one of them have name tags.
When he dies, he gets mad for a few hours, then jumps right back in. He doesn’t die all that often though, so he won’t rage quit.
He gets the minecraft books later on and you can see him reading it under his table time to time
Ritsu
He starts off with easy or normal without much knowledge on the game, probably only played because Shigeo introduced him to or Shou bugged him about it.
He’ll have a farm, but just for resources. Won't have much animals, mostly crops. He’ll live next to a village if there is one.
His first house will also be a dirt house, he’ll improve it overtime and add more levels and decorations. It can get very pretty in the end and he’ll be content to just stay and keep adding more to his house.
Not the best builder, but good enough for people to compliment it. He feels especially proud when Shigeo likes them, so he’s keen on building better and more.
He plans before he mines, calculates how many torches he needs and plans out what he’s exactly looking for, even calculates how many hunger bars each food item will fill before taking it with him.
If he gets really into the game, he’ll defeat the ender dragon, wither and head on into the nether. Not in that order though.
Will sleep if he doesn’t need to do anything
Most likely to have pets, perhaps a cat, or a dog, or a parrot. Only one though.
When he dies, he accepts it and moves on. Though, that would rarely happen.
Recently got into a forced Minecraft marriage with Shou. Is it forced if he enjoyed it though?
Teru
This bitch really just gonna jump right into survival just to flex on Shigeo.
Duh, of course he’ll have a farm. Will probably talk to the animals.
His first house is either borrowed from a villager or built with wood, but it’ll definitely not be a simple ass wooden house. It will be a nice fucking mansion, just watch him, he will. He’ll fight all the mobs he needs to just to built this mansion right off the bat, doesn’t even care if the first night he sleeps roofless.
Really good at building, because he wants to compete with Ritsu for fun and boast about it to Shigeo. Shigeo would just clap and be like “Wow so cool.”
“Thanks, made it myself, I can make one for you.” Shigeo declines, he’s an independent man, which makes Teru a mixture of disappointment and oh-my-god-you’re-adorable???
He doesn't plan when he mines, he just estimates and half ass some stuff before he struts into the cave. Sometimes he gets lost, but that’s perfectly fine.
Will defeat every mob boss and mob ever to show Shigeo he’s very powerful.
Doesn’t sleep, fights the phantom instead. Will sleep if Shigeo asks him to.
Most likely to have a pet cat, but he doesn’t mind dogs.
When he dies, he’s an angry baby and makes up some excuse as to why he’s dead. “I was distracted, didn’t see the lava. Whoops I guess ha ha no big deal.” But it is a big deal, he lost his diamonds, he wants to give it to his boyfriend but he cannot. Because he died.
Has yet to marry Shigeo in Minecraft.
Shou
Plays because he is a gamer. Survival hardcore ftw. He only plays multiplayer with Ritsu these days, never single player because he has been playing Minecraft his whole childhood and it gets boring on his own.
What’s a fucking farm? I take my food from my Minecraft husband.
Sleeps in a cave, but if Ritsu’s done with the house, he joins his bed with him and sleeps under a roof.
But he’s really really good at building, probably the best next to Serizawa. If you gave him the resources and time, he can recreate Seasoning City.
A concerning miner, jumps in with just torches and a pickaxe and somehow still survives (mostly because Ritsu always goes looking for him)
Could probably easily defeat the bosses because he has already done it so many times
Will only sleep when Ritsu is, which is almost all the time.
He owns every kind of animal.
He dies too many times because he really doesn’t mind, it makes Ritsu mad and that’s what keeps him going.
Shou was suffocated in sand.
“S H O U.” Ritsu yells at the boy next to him.
Was the one that proposed to Ritsu, invited everyone to the wedding; including Serizawa and Reigen.
Serizawa
Played while he was still hiding in his home, so he knows everything about the game when he finally played it with Reigen or the kids.
He loves farming, even the animals, it’s oddly calming to take care of something that won’t die unless he hits em.
He always collects resources first before he actually starts building a home, so he always sleeps in a cave or a villager’s house.
After years of experience, he became really good at building, he use to spend time recreating maps from other games. But he says Shou is better than him, the boy disagrees.
Yeah he mines, but he’s wary of dying when he heads into the cave, so he always brings too many torches.
Makes sure he is very very prepared before defeating bosses
Always sleeps in time, because Reigen said so. Well, because Reigen advised it, what a hypocrite am I right?
Doesn’t have pets, and even if he does, he always make them stay put at one place.
Doesn’t die all that often, almost not at all.
He pretends to not be good at the game when Reigen’s around, he mostly lets the other do what they wanna do because he loves watching his husband play.
“Serizawa! Look, I made the zombie villager back into a villager!” Reigen pointed, Serizawa smiles and nods. He already knew how to do that, but Reigen’s discovery makes it feel he discovered something new himself.
Tome
Bro this woman is so experienced to a point everyone consults her for tips.
She’s building up to find aliens in minecraft, even though they don’t exist, but she’s convinced they’re an easter egg or something.
No, she doesn’t farm. She takes em from the villagers, but she has a few beehives here and there.
She’s only mining to find diamonds as a peace offering to minecraft aliens.
One time she thought the Wither was an alien.
One time, she thought the phantom was an alien.
One time she thought the ghast was an alien.
Has died multiple times because she is careless, but she is never upset about it. Always jumps right back into the game immediately.
Parrots are her pets, because they f l y and d a n c e.
One time she thought the creepers were aliens.
She has this summoning circle made of redstone and torches in case there really are aliens.
She believes in herobrine and sometimes tries to summon him.
She thinks the aliens made the temples in minecraft.
Other Characters
Minegishi has so many bees and flowers and crops it’s almost covering the whole map.
Takenaka plays because it’s very quiet and calming
Shimazaki cannot play. He is blind.
Shou’s old resistance team use to play with him, now they sometimes play together as a trio when Shou is playing with Ritsu.
Mukai and Tsuchi play because Mukai wanted to, she has a lot of armor stands in her house.
Tsubomi does not play, she played once and didn’t enjoy it all that much, but she’s perfectly happy watching her friends play.
Emi roleplays in minecraft.
Mezato doesn’t play, but she likes watching minecraft videos on youtube, mostly the theories.
Everyone in the awakening lab plays, Kurosaki is fantastic at mining because she always knows which way are the mobs and which way are the diamonds. Asahi is an arsonist.
Minori once got invited by Shigeo to play, then she proceeded to buy minecraft and everything in it to impress him. Shigeo only congratulated her once. Contemplating buying the whole of Mojang, but she’s a good girl now so she won’t.
Hoshida plays to impress Tome. Too bad, son, she’s not into you.

I've been keeping track of some of my favorite finished and in-progress mp100 fics as I find them and figured I'd show them some love by linking them here! They come in no particular order or genre, just whichever I bookmarked last haha. If you"re looking for good mp100 fics be sure to check these out!
To Strike A Chord Author: Hino Rating: Teen Archive Warnings: None Completion Status: Complete Tags: platonic ritshou, mutual trauma, post world domination arc Summary: Ritsu visits Shou, feeling uneasy about his past. But he's not the only one. My Notes: Short and sweet, it touches on Shou and Ritsu’s mutual trauma from the World Domination arc and gives insight in the Suzuki family relationship before Touichirou decided to take over the world. Also Shou plays the guitar.
Of Cold Hands Reaching Author: UncannyCookie Rating: G Archive Warnings: None Completion Status: Complete Tags: terumob (can be read as platonic), angst, ptsd, trauma recovery, hurt/comfort, dissociation, miscommunication, post-mogami arc, slow burn Summary: After six months in Mogami's mind world that weren't even real anyway, Mob returns to his old life. Everything is fine. My Notes: A really interesting take on what Mob’s mind looks like after spending six months in Mogami’s fake world. It gets pretty real when discussing Mob’s dissociation and apathy about the whole thing but gets sweet at the end and has a happy ending. It’s introspective, which I really like, but has enough lighter moments in between that it doesn’t feel heavy constantly.
Delirium Author: Janekfan Rating: G Archive Warnings: None Completion Status: Complete Tags: serirei, pneumonia, hospitalization, guilt, smoking, depression, sel-harm, panic attacks, fever, sickfic, love, kissing, caretaking, misunderstandings, mental instability, flashbacks, unconsciousness Summary: Reigen questions himself. My Notes: Reigen decides to pick up smoking again as a coping mechanism and hides it from Serizawa. It goes into Reigen’s feelings of self-loathing and depressive tendencies that the manga only really touches on. It’s dreary pretty much throughout but does have a happy ending to end on a high note!
April Fools Author: SparkyFrootloops Rating: G Archive Warnings: None Completion Status: Complete Tags: dad reigen, good parent reigen, teru is reigen’s son, hijinks & shenanigans, pranks Summary: Teruki gets to celebrate April Fools Day at his new home with Reigen. My Notes: This fic is short but so so funny and full of heart. Teru trying to prank Reigen, who he lives with in the context of the story, is hilarious and all the dialogue is just gold. I also really love Mob’s cameo in the second half. Just a solid found family comedy one-shot to lighten your mood and make you smile.
Broken, Repaired, New Author: GalacticConfectionist Rating: T Archive Warnings: None Completion Status: In Progress Tags: serirei, abuse, child abuse, domestic violence (all abuse is only implied/referenced, never shown), light angst, hurt/comfort, pining, good parent reigen, good brother reigen, original character but she’s really good Summary: “You’re a good kid” He said, ruffling his student’s hair. There’s a moment of quiet and Reigen sighs, “Mob, remember this. Guys who hit women are the biggest losers in the world.” Reigen’s sister comes to visit, shenanigans ensue. My Notes: I don’t usually go for fics with ocs in them since I don’t typically end up connecting with them but this is one of the rare exceptions! Reigen’s sister escapes her abusive husband with her daughter and goes to Reigen for help. She ends up staying with Serizawa and trying to set him up with her brother. Despite the references to abuse it’s actually a very lighthearted fic about wanting to make your friends happy and taking care of those you consider to be family. Misaki and Reigen’s sibling relationship is well-written and she has enough personality and motivation to make me invested in her situation. Just an all-around good read if you want to smile and feel happy.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! lol Author: marnies Rating: Not Rated Archive Warnings: None Completion Status: In Progress Tags: serirei, good parent reigen, good parent serizawa, sickfic, fluff, epic family moments Summary: reigen and serizawa adopt teru and shou and move in together asmr My Notes: This fic is just a good time. It’s not too far in but still has enough content to be worth a read. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but that’s the charm of it, and it comes across as humorous and lighthearted with its found family dynamics. Reigen and Serizawa are both clueless parents of their adopted sick kids and are just trying to help each other out.
The Space Between Author: sofia-estrella Rating: M (nsfw content in later chapters) Archive Warnings: None Completion Status: In Progress Tags: serirei, reigen pov, slow burn, coworkers to friends to lovers Summary: Reigen never expected Serizawa to stay. My Notes: A really nice fic about how Reigen and Serizawa’s relationship grows and evolves slowly as they spend more than a year together over the course of the narrative. Both Reigen and Serizawa are very in character and their relationship is approached with care and concern from both sides, which I think is very fitting for them! It does a good job of balancing soft character interaction with personal squabbles and drama, which makes for an interesting and entertaining read.
The Joy of Cooking (for a Family You Didn’t Know You Had) Author: pepperfield Rating: G Archive Warnings: None Completion Status: In Progress Tags: good parent reigen, background serirei, found family, unintentional parenthood, cooking, meddling kids, family fluff, food as a metaphor for love, getting together, light pining, 5+1 Summary: At first, it's easy. Mob likes takoyaki. This, Reigen can remember. When Teru moves in, things get a little more complex, but it's fine. He only has to feed one kid on a regular basis; he can handle this. But before he knows it, he's memorized all of Tome's favorite restaurants and he's keeping a stash of snacks in the office just in case Shou visits. This whole "family" business has gotten out of hand. My Notes: Good old dad Reigen taking care of his five unruly children. In this fic Teru lives with Reigen and everyone else is just along for the collective ride. It’s a 5+1 fic about Reigen cooking/buying food for the kids as a way to show he cares about them. It’s really cute and shows how much Reigen cares about the esper boys and Tome after all is said and done in the manga.
On Revelations and Renovations Author: mustdang100 Rating: G Archive Warnings: None Completion Status: In Progress Tags: good parent reigen, reigen adopts teru, background serirei, hurt/comfort, adoption, fluff and humor, 5+1 Summary: “I’m really sorry to bother you, but, ah, I don’t suppose that offer to stay at your place for the night was still an option?” Five times Reigen got called a 'dad,' and one time he called himself one - a vignette-style fic on how Teruki grows up and Reigen acquires a family in the days, months, and years following the World Domination arc. My Notes: Teru decides to stay with Reigen after all following the world domination arc, and then never leaves. It’s a super cute and fun fic about found family dynamics between all the main cast, but specifically Reigen and Teru. Teru and Reigen’s banter is well-written and funny, and the whole concept and execution is really charming and fun to ready.
A Real (Psychic) Conman Author: Trinz Rating: T Archive Warnings: None Completion Status: In Progress Tags: esper!reigen, empath!reigen, swearing, reigen centric Summary: An AU where Reigen actually is the 21st century's greatest psychic- or at least the second, or third, or maybe fourth- the point is that he’s an esper and his "I'm so powerful I can hide my aura" thing is... actually true. My Notes: This is one of my current favorite fics. I read it all over the course of like two days up to its current chapter and I’m in love with the author’s psychic Reigen concept. It follows the canon storyline with some divergence to account for Reigen actually having powers, and really paints him in a different light. It also has an air of mystery with its over-arching plot that, seventeen chapters in, still has only been hinted at, but the real star of the fic is the way a psychically powered Reigen interacts with Mob, Ritsu, and Dimple and the creative ways the author incorporates his powers of telepathy and empathy. Really creative and a super fun long read if you want a longer story!

Reigen knew me better than anyone I knew.
He could tell what percentage I was at before I could even spill the numbers.
Even though he was never as great as he said, and I had known he was a fraud for years, I do believe that somewhere deep down, Reigen did have an ability.
Reigen passed the year after I graduated high school, so I guess we'll never really know.
It was a couple months ago, but I'm still not strong enough to talk about it.
I'm struggling to live as an adult without him.
There's no one who can really understand my situation as much as he did.
Even though I love Ritsu and Teru dearly, and they're working hard to get in the level Reigen was once, they'll never be Reigen.
I'm never going to have a person like that again.
… Probably.
Before he passed, I used to text him when I was starting to get overwhelmed, about to meltdown, and he'd help me ground myself, keep it under wraps.
Sometimes he'd call, he had a comforting voice.
I find myself still texting his old number, I'm sure it goes to some random person now who didn't even know who Reigen was, but that doesn't stop me.
I apologize a lot in those messages.
Partially because it was my fault he passed.
Partially because I feel bad for dumping all my emotional baggage on the person actually receiving these.
I vent about my day, I scroll up and read our old conversations, I take pictures of things that remind me of him and send them.
… Part of me is half expecting him to respond.
Part of me is hoping he's gonna text back and say "Aw, what a cute puppy, Mob! Be sure to give it lots of pets for me!"
And then he doesn't.
I had a meltdown at his funeral, it was embarrassing.
Dimple didn't know what to do with me, Ritsu was trying to get everyone to settle down.
Teru tried to comfort me from afar.
I cried a lot that day.
I couldn't leave the house for weeks.
I got fired from my job because I hadn't come into work so long.
I stayed home alone, constantly at my limit.
100% loneliness.
100% sadness.
100% mourning.
I think the stages of grief work differently for me, I never had a denial, bargaining, or anger stage.
I jumped right into depression, head first.
I'm working my way out of it, though.
Reigen had no living family, but he had put me in his will, so I had gotten most of everything he ever owned. Ritsu tried to get me to get rid of it, but I was already attached to most of it.
So I kept most of his belongings.
Teru wasn't mad when most of our apartment was cluttered with Reigen's stuff, and I was stuck in the middle of the apartment, desperately trying to cope.
He organized it, framed pictures and put away books.
I still couldn't cope. But he insisted that was okay.
I readjusted my routine, trying to keep my lost father figure as far from my mind as possible, but he still forced his way in.
Today, Dimple insisted that I visit Reigen's grave for the first time in months. Ritsu said it was a bad idea, that it would only awaken more grieving, but… Maybe it could be the closure I needed.
The train was loud, so I had worn my ear defenders, and sat close to the window while I waited for my stop.
I felt like a middle schooler again, on my way to the Spirit and Consultation Office after school.
I wasn't, but it was a nice warm feeling to be reminded of.
My stop came along, and I hopped off the train and headed towards the graveyard. It was autumn, the wind had just gotten chilly and the leaves started to fall. I slipped off my ear defenders and continued walking.
"Dimple," I asked, "Were you ever… Human? Or were you just always a spirit?"
Dimple looked back at me, I'm sure if he had shoulders he would shrug, "Don't really know, Shigeo. I've been like this for as long as I can remember, so I doubt I was ever human. Why?"
I looked down towards the ground, shoving my hands in my pockets, "Maybe… I've been too consumed by grief to think about this before, but I'm wondering if maybe… Reigen is a spirit now."
"Don't get your hopes up."
"I know but… It'd be a nice thought. To actually talk to him again instead of just… texting his old number like he's still there."
"Maybe so, but would it really feel any better to know he's stuck here instead of going into the afterlife?"
I fell silent again, Dimple might've been right, maybe I was selfish for wanting that.
I don't like the idea of him being stuck here forever.
What if he asks me to exorcise him? Would I be able to do it?
Would I… be able to live with killing him twice?
"Don't think about it too much, kid," Dimple reassured, "Think about something else, like… Oh, Serizawa's coming to town soon, isn't he?"
I nodded, "He is, he's going to take over the business, and probably move up here. He left to visit family for awhile… the grief was too much for him."
"And your brother is getting married soon, right?"
"I think so… I hope he and Shou don't feel like Teru and I are pressuring him since we're already married… Teru and I have just been together since middle school."
"Ah, I'm sure he doesn't feel like that, hey look! We're there," Dimple replied.
I looked up at the entry way gate, and headed on in.
I could feel the presence of many spirits, most of which were good meaning, as I moved down the aisles. I remembered which one was Reigen's, I'm not quite sure why I memorized that, as I came across the gravestone.

A father to all,
A lover to one.
I remember Serizawa picking out that inscription, he confronted me about it before confirming it.
It was the first thing to make me smile during the week of Reigen's death.
I took a breath, looking down at the grave, and then getting on my knees.
The ground was cold, and I felt no presence here.
"Reigen…" I started, trying to collect myself, "I'm really sorry. About… everything. About the fight I got you involved in, the people I got you involved in with, not taking over the business like you wanted… I'm really sorry about that one, I should've done it, but it feels so… so… empty without you… Serizawa said he was gonna take it, though. I know he's gonna take good care of it, I'll work under him, too. Maybe someday… I'll let go enough to be able to do it? I don't know…"
I balled up the fabric of my jeans into my hands, trying to keep it together.
"I've been texting your old number, I'm having such a hard time living without you… I love Ritsu, and Teru, and Dimple but… I don't think there's a person in the world who could get me quite as well as you did. You taught me a lot of things, I'm not sure if I'd be the same person without you. Teru, as patient as he is, is probably tired of my mourning and constant depression. I had a meltdown at your funeral, I'm sorry about that, too, it was really embarrassing…"
I fell silent again, biting my tongue.
"I think… I'm happy about the moments we spent together, though. There could've been so much more, you died so young, but the ones we had… they make me pretty happy. A part of me, though, has been thinking about you on the afterlife. Wondering if you're a spirit and wondering… how much damage I can do with my powers. It was my fault you passed, my fault that many people passed and now I'm wondering… am I really a good person? Am I doing good enough? Will I ever… live up to what you thought of me?"
There's silence in the air as I feel the emotions build up once again.

"I'm really nothing without you, I'm so annoying to everyone because you're all I can talk about. I can't remember the last time I saw my parents, Serizawa left town for awhile, Teru's coping by overworking himself and here I am, crying to someone who isn't here anymore and can't do anything to help. Here I am, texting a dead person and still praying they'll text back and… And… I'm just…"

"I'm just so… fucking lonely, Reigen, I'm so fucking lonely."
There isn't a response. But I expected that. Nothing but the wind as I still pray to hear a familiar voice.
Just one more time, please.
Just one more hug.
"Hey, Mob!"
I lift my head up, and I'm met with a ghostly figure of someone I once knew.
"Still venting to me from the afterlife, huh?"

this is messy and quick but… i was watching Wolf Children, and got an idea. i swear every time i get into a fandom, i have to make a werewolf au. SO, here’s an mp100 version. very loosely inspired by the movie(doesn’t totally follow the same story) all i got so far is:
- the psychics are werewolves now - reigen is the boys’ godfather and somehow ends up with two weres for kids. i’m thinking something happened to their parents but i don’t know yet - he has no idea how to handle it, but moves the family up to the mountains where they can revel in both sides of their heritage - mob is uncomfortable with his wolf side; i’m thinking he may have lost control a bit when they were little and took it out on ritsu. never forgave himself - ritsu on the other hand, loves his other side, but isn’t a naturally gifted shifter like his brother. he has trouble with it because , as much as he wants it, there’s a deep fear of it too
- as the kids get older, they venture out more, and mob meets a strange man named serizawa, who lives even farther up the mountain. mob instantly knows he’s a wolf, he can smell it on him. he tells reigen, and reigen gets all excited like “oh thank god, someone who can educate me so i can educate my kids” - reigen goes to introduce himself, but serizawa is very much a recluse and turns him away, especially when the wolf subject it brought up - reigen earns his trust over the months tho, being a good neighbour and all that. they become friends and seri confides in him, opening up about his hate and anxiety towards the wolf in him. he has terrible control over it, and during an argument, hurt his mother when he was younger. he ran from home and became a hermit in the mountains. but it’s okay tho! he met his “wise master”(suzuki), who has “helped” him cope and learn to control it. suzuki convinced him that as long as the moon was full, he’d be okay while changed. serizawa deep down understands this scientifically makes no sense, but still finds comfort in the moon. it’s something to focus on - the super 5 and toichirou aren’t evil masterminds in this au, just a weird little pack of guys who don’t really like each other but need each other - meanwhile, ritsu has met shou, a little fox shifter who cajoles(bothers) him into being friends. shou helps ritsu let loose and tap into his shifting without fear. shou tells him all about his dumb dad who thinks he’s “lord of the mountain” or some nonsense - serizawa eventually realizes he’s being manipulated, and leaves the super 5 pack behind. he agrees to teach the kids what he knows, and becomes more confident and comfortable - this helps mob out a lot, to the point where he completely accepts both sides of himself. mob comes to realize, after not enjoying school, and accepting himself, that he’s meant for the wild more than the city. he still has plenty of human friends who he loves to visit. ritsu discovers he’s more comfortable living life as a man, but still makes plenty of time to go run with his brother - i’ll figure out where teru and tome and everyone else can fit in
*edit* okay teru is def the kid at school who thinks he’s the only one of his kind. he thinks he’s hot shit. tome is the local cryptid enthusiast and swears she saw bigfoot. it was just seri-wolf. when she befriends mob, she learns all about werewolves but that’s not nearly as exciting as bigfoot and aliens

DadReigenweek 6: Tea | Hobbies
Again, sorry for not posting anything yesterday but i had another exam to study for (someone free me from this)
Heres day 6: tea? hobbies? A little bit of both again with Tome this time.
I’ll post tomorrow day 7: free day and if you have followed my stories so far you know it’s Ritsu’s turn (so if someone has any idea what should i write hit me up because i have no idea what to do for it)
I hope you enjoy it and please ignore the fact i know nothing about correctly preparing tea (i literally failed my japanese exams not because i dint understand them but because i had no idea of how tto prepare tead and there was a concerning amount of question related to that)
Tea and Hobbies
“TOME” Reigen shrieked from the kitchenette where he was searching for a towel to move the keetle to the counter without burning himself
“What?” she replied from her spot n the couch, not taking her eyes off her handheld videogame.
“YOU FORGOT TO TURN THE STOVE OFF AGAIN””
“What??” she said finally standing and poking her head through the doorframe “I did not-uuhh”
Reigen, after finally finding a towel, was holding an empty keetle. The tea had long evaporated.
“What are we going to serve our clients now?” Reigen lamented pinching the bridge of his nose
“We can make more…” Tome said carefully. she didn’t undertand why Reigen was making such a big deal out of this.
“Tome, this is the fourth time this week” he then pointed to the black stains that were starting to form at the kettles sides “at this rate it’ll become useless and we can’t afford to buy a new one every week. Why did you even use the highest flame?”
“I didn’t know…” Tome admitted and it was true, actually this was the first time she had to prepare tea “and you said you wanted to preserve the tea hot for any customer that might walk in”
“I said hot, not scalding! and for that you just need to heat it with a small flame” he turned to the stove and showed her how to adjust the flame until he seemed it appropriately “Like this”
“And you don’t even have to leave it like that all day! You could raise the flames a little, leave it there some minutes while I talk with the customers and with that would be enough”
Tome firmly nodded actually payin attention to Reigen’s words “I’ll make sure to do that next time”
“You better do” Reigen grimaced when a dark thought crossed his mind “I just hope the bills don’t come too high this month”
Tome actually gulped at that “You can take it from my pay…”
Reigen looked away keenly aware of how little he paid her “Yeah...it won’t be enough” he said without thinking.
He wasn’t expecting to see troubled expression on Tome’s face when he turned to face her again “Hey! What’s wrong?”
“I...It’s wasn’t my intention to cause you this much trouble.” she muttered “ You probably would prefer Mob being here, I bet he knows how to make some dumb tea”
Reigen sighed “Mod has done this for years, of course he knows how to make tea..but that’s the least of the problems. It’s really dangerous to leave the stove on unsupervised, specially with the highest flame and while you are alone. Haven’t your parents told you this?”
Tome shaked her head and Reigen had to sigh again. Between Teru, Shou, himself and now Tome he was starting to believe the Kageyamas were the only good parents in this world.
“Well now you know” He grabbed Tome by her shoulder and making sure the keetle had cooled down he handed it to Tome "Now go wash it while i do some actual work here. and make sure you get all the burnt leaves off from it. We don't want to serve that tastes bad to our future clients"
He left Tome to wash her mess in the kitchenette and headed to office main room where he caught sight of Tome’s forgotten videogame.
She probably forgot the tea playing that thing. Reigen couldn't understood how she could get so immersed in that thing.
Actually, he thought grabbing the small device and looking at it, he had never understood what was so entertaining of these things.
Except for his brief involvement while trying to beat that one spirit, he had never played videogames. He was more of a outdoors type of guy.
While his classmates and everyone got excited talking about ‘The legend of Mario’ and ‘the pokey men’ he...actually now that he thought about it it was probably because he didn’t have friends who invited him over to play…STILL Serizawa semed to like them too and Reigen doubted he had some else to play with.
What was so interesting about these things??
Reigen had no idea and he was about to leave the game when suddenly it slipped of his hands (damn sweaty hands) and in his haste to catch it he accidentally pressed a button.
The game returned to life, its lively sounds and colourful animations contrasting with the horror Reigen felt when he saw the character Tome was playing fall of a platform to his absolute demise and the message “Game Over” appearing on the screen while a sad music played.
Tome was going to kill him
As quickly as he could he selected the “play again” option but everything was wrong. Reigen could swore the landscape where the character appeared didn’t look like the one Tome had been and if he noticed then she absolutely would.
Reigen didn’t have another choice. He would have to play it and return the character to where it had been before Tome finished washing the dishes.
He had beaten that videogame’s spirit. How difficult could it be?
Very apparently.
Figuring the mechanics of the game and each button’s function hadn’t been difficult, the problem arised when the first enemy showed and in a quick movement killed Reigen’s character, the game over screen appearing again.
Reigen selected the “play again” option played one more time. He died.
By the fifth time he was able to defeat the enemy with the help of some green potion he found but it wan’t enough for the wave of enemy that approached him near the bridge.
He was starting to get used to “Game over” screen but that wouldn’t do, he was nowhere near the scenery Tome had previously been.
Reigen frowned, if he was going to do this he needed to find more of those useful green potions and once he decided he had enough he marched back to bridge and fough the swarm of enemies, barely surviving.
There was another wave but from the previous victory Reigen had learned a new move and gained some ‘experience points’ which greatly helped him this time.
He kept advancing, crossing towns and climbing mountains, fighting off nastier enemies and talking with the random villagers he found, some of them giving him good tips.
It had been a while since he died but he didn’t notice until he entered a castle that vaguely looked familiar and defeated the monster thus gaining the the holier sword, and enhanced version of the one he had.
Reigen celebrated, pumping a fist on the air but was interrumpting by someone clearing their throat.
“I thought you said you had work to do” a smug Tome said watching him from above her handheld game.
With a whiplash Reigen returned to reality.
Now it was Reigen’s turn to clear his throat “Of course I am working! THis was just...uhh- err”
Reigen didn’t have to think in what to say because Tome’s eyes fell to the screen and lightened “You won the Holy Sword??” she said pointing at the game “Wow, I am impressed! Have you already rescued your friend?”
“My friend?!”
“Yeah, the one who was kidnapped! “she said excitedly “With that sword you can go to the Dead’s forest now”
“I don’t know where the Dead Forest is”
“Duh, you have to go and ask the old wise man”
“The old wise man?”
“Yeah! You had to have encountered him already? Big beard? Lives at the side of the second town-”
“Oh! the one who sold me 10 potions?”
“10 potions?? No, he sells you-YOU CHOSE THE POTIONS INSTEAD OF THE SHIELD? “ Tome shaked her head and pinched the bridge of her nose “Alright, we can work with that. You at least asked him to teach you how to use a bow”
“Of course I did! Who do you take me for?”
“Good”
Reigen wasn’t expecting to learn more from Tome than she did from him that day. But at least they had something to talk about with Serizawa the next day.

tell me about aro reigen and ritsu pls i'm interested in ur take owo
Oh yes bless lol okay. So I’ve never really done any sort of meta writing or whatever, but this topic really interests me and I wanted to kind of look back and figure out why exactly I gravitated towards those two as being aro (as opposed to other characters)
And the interesting thing is, despite acting totally different and having such varied personalities I can still totally see both of them sharing this trait. Maybe it’s because they both kind of subvert the typical… expectations of aromanticism? I guess (honestly there’s not actually any typical expectations because there’s hardly any actual representation, but that’s… another issue)?
I’ll put the rest under a read more because it got a little long!
First of all, we have these two characters who are seen as conventionally attractive and “popular with the ladies”
Students at Ritsu’s school clearly have a high opinion of him and think he’s handsome. Presumably, he gets a similar amount of attention that Teru seems to (minus the psychic powers). But while Teru takes advantage of the girls who find him attractive and seems to date around before he meets Mob, Ritsu never seems interested in pursuing any relationships like that. In fact, he doesn’t seem all that concerned with Anything outside of his desire to have powers like his brother. Romance isn’t even a blip on his radar.
Of course, while Ritsu makes his apathy towards popularity apparent, that doesn’t mean he thinks it’s necessarily a waste. When he sees that Mob is “becoming popular” (and thus sees how happy his brother is) he’s excited for him. Sure, he doesn’t get the hype, but he supports Mob wholeheartedly. This isn’t exactly relevant, but uh it’s cute lol
Another big characteristic of Ritsu’s is his detachment to his childhood. Everyone seems to find him to be a paramount of maturity and responsibility, and he himself is no exception. While talking about other middle schoolers, he seems to distance himself. Certainly He isn’t the emotional one, he never acts rash (ha ha)
It definitely wouldn’t surprise me if he considered crushes and romance to be… somewhat childish or a waste of time. He has bigger fish to fry or maybe bigger spoons to bend.
And sure, anyone can make the argument that he’s just not interested in girls, or is too young to think seriously about romance, which is fine (honestly Ritsu and Shou would be a hilarious/chaotic disaster couple and I’m all for it), but I also like the contrast of Ritsu’s narrative arc to his brother’s. Assuming that he feels no romantic attraction at all is such a good antithesis to Mob’s crush on Tsubomi and how his dreams of love fuel basically his entire story.
That brings us to Reigen and oh boy. Just like Ritsu, he’s also seen as a handsome character (in universe. irl it’s a debate, but ONE seemed to design Reigen as more attractive than other characters so I’ll go by that) (Also, Serizawa agrees)
Now, Reigen’s a bit of a different case than Ritsu. He’s a bit older, and at a point in his life where he’s definitely more expected to be settling down. On his birthday, his mother even sends him an email asking what the deal is

During the separation arc, we get a look at Reigen’s personal life. Up until this point it is only speculation of what kind of shady things he gets up to when Mob isn’t around, but we see very quickly that Reigen is… lonely. Unlike Ritsu, he isn’t admired by peers his own age, and he doesn’t have any friends. He comes to terms with this fact pretty roughly, but decides to venture on in his career alone. Reigen’s loneliness could just be attributed to him not hanging out with anybody outside of work (since his only employee is 14). But, being aro, one of the most prevalent downsides is a sort of hollowness felt when people you’re close to move on in their lives, finding partners, getting married, moving in together and spending time with each other. Romantic relationships take priority over friendships so I don’t think it’s unfair to say loneliness is something a lot of aros experience to some degree.
Personally, in the context of Reigen not feeling romantic attraction and not being “normal” and settling down like society thinks he should, the “What am I?” really strikes… I don’t know, but something.
On a lighter note, though, there are some instances where Reigen just seems flat out oblivious about love. It can be played off for small laughs, but knowing how suave and knowledgeable about things Reigen usually is, it’s actually even more hilarious and even more proof this guy wouldn’t know romance if it hit him in the face. From googling basic, childish advice for how to confess feelings, to offering “love consultations” in the form of having people fill out what’s most likely some sort of Cosmo teen girl who-should-you-date questionnaire, he’s definitely not the first person I’d go to for any serious relationship advice.
I’m sure if I actually dug deeper I could find more examples of both Reigen and Ritsu showing off characteristics of being aro/ace, these were just a few things I remembered or found in a quick skim of a few chapters of the manga. These are just my personal headcanons, but I still love all of the other lgbt hcs that people have for these characters! Hopefully this was at least a little bit coherent, I’m not always the best at getting thoughts out in an intelligible way lol

Re-Established (pt. 2)
It had been a couple more days since the night they figured she had gone missing. It brought unease to everyone, growing moreso as the school started to acknowledge their missing student and began putting safety precautions up. Her face was posted around the school, with bulky letters underneath that read 'missing'. Students all around talked about the sudden loss of one of their peers, even going to the five boys to see if they were okay. When the news covered missing children, it was agonizing to see her face as one of them.
It was pure hell.
The stress of losing her partially subsided after so long. It gave everyone a chance to think clearly, as they hadn't been able to come up with an idea since it was announced she was missing. They spent more time together, trying to see if there were any leads online. Reigen even came in to help try and research for her, but nothing turned up. All she was was another face to the world.
"Is there anything we can do?" Ritsu asked after sitting in the silent room for so long. "No internet leads, no further reports on her, its like she's been forgotten." Shou answered, bending his pencil until it snapped in half.
"Then how about you look at it from another perspective?" Serizawa asked as he and Reigen walked in the older Kageyama's room with chai tea for them.
"What do you mean?" Teru asked, taking a drink of the warm beverage.
"I wish we thought of this sooner, I guess it's just been so long since we really had to use them... But we're espers. We should look from the perspective of one. I'm sure if we try hard enough, we can use our powers to find her!"
"While the optimism is nice, I tried," Takenaka spoke up tiredly, "her voice has gone silent. There's no way we can find her with these abilities." He looked to his hands and shook his head, then covered his face again. "Well, maybe. But I've worked alongside Shimazaki for years. He probably forgot about it himself in the midst of losing..." Serizawa went quiet as he remembered it was still a touchy situation. With a shake of the head, he and Reigen shared a glance.
"You boys try to relax. Its not good to be so stressed at your age." Reigen explained.
"Easier said than done," Ritsu snapped back.
"We'll go talk to them and see how things are."
The couple left the house and began the walk down the street. They talked about the situation at hand and possible reasons behind the girl's disappearance, but nothing pieced together or even made sense for that matter.
Eventually reaching the house, Reigen knocked on the door and opened it. Looking around, the house was still in fair shape. They entered the home and glanced around.
"Minegishi? Shimazaki?" Serizawa called out as he walked ahead of Reigen. He went into the hall and looked at the doors, opening each one to look into the room as he hadn't really done much visiting to their house. But, after reaching the last door in the hall, he opened it and saw the couple in bed. They were awake, but didn't do much except lay there. Trash was collected on the floor, and the blankets were strung across the floors. It broke his heart to see the ones he was close with, so distraught.
"Hey, how're you feeling?" He asked, stepping over to the two. Their skin was paler than usual, like they hadn't moved from the bed since that day. But, as he received no response, the male let out a soft sigh and leaned over to Shimazaki. Grabbing his arm gently, he pulled him to sit up before bringing Minegishi up.
"You guys can't give up on her!" He exclaimed, voice raising as he spoke. They both jolted at his sudden yelling. "Your daughter needs you two! So get up, I have an idea that could possibly help us." He stated, then walked over to their closet. He pulled out clean clothes and tossed them to the two before going out to the living room and taking a seat. He glanced over to see Reigen looking at him with somewhat surprised.
After a few minutes, the two males came out of their room and looked to the other couple on the couch. Once they were ready, the four began their trek back to Shigeo and Ritsu's house.
"We've worked together for so long. I know what you guys are capable of. I wish I thought of this sooner, but Shimazaki," Serizawa began as he glanced to the male, "you've got quite the strong ability. Did you forget about it?" He glanced to the male, who held a surprised look as he was addressed. For a moment, he was confused as to what he meant. Then he felt the realization hit, as well as an undeniable amount of guilt as he realized exactly how long it took.
"Mind's Eye..." He muttered under his breath. Minegishi looked at him for a moment, then understood what he meant. "Its... Been awhile since we've really needed our powers. I usually just use mine to restock the plants," he rubbed the back of his neck and looked to his feet as he walked along. "It's reasonable to forget about your powers, considering you don't use them in your daily lives like some," Reigen reasoned as they got back to the Kageyama household. Once they walked inside, they saw the boys all about, doing their own thing.
"Alright, so here's my plan," Serizawa began as they were all gathered back into the living room.
"If we can all put our powers together, maybe we can amplify Shimazaki's ability to seek out other espers. I'm not saying it'll work, but so far, its all we've got. She could be in Seasoning City, but we wouldn't know."
"Then why can't I hear her?!" Takenaka stated, staring at the man. "If she's in the city, then I should be able to hear her!" He was having a difficult time trying to keep it together, but he was exhausted. Without her voice rambling nonsense at the late hours of the night, he couldn't help but feel uneasy at night.
"There might be something that's blocking your telepathy. I don't know if it's true or not, but I've seen espers who can block things out with their powers. Which is why we should try to amplify Shimazaki's powers. He's already strong enough as is, so we might have a chance. It's better than nothing," as the man explained the situation, the teen shook his head and sat back. He took a breath to settle his nerves, then slowly nodded with a sigh.
"Alright, let's give it a shot."
"You show quite resistance for someone who's easy to influence." Muto's voice sounded out through what she was being shown. She blinked a few times and shook her head before opening her eyed snd finding herself back in the empty room. The lights made her head ache, as she was used to little to no lighting in the room.
Squinting a bit, Cookie pressed back against the chair and let out a shaky sigh. The pain in her chest still hadn't gone away, but she wasn't worried for the most part. As she noticed her flames didn't grow far past the size of a match, she figured there was something that blocked out her powers. She tried to use her powers all throughout the night, but the barrier never let up, so she just kept at it with her small flames. Her telekinetic ability wasn't strong enough to go against the metal bindings, so she wasn't at any sort of advantage.
"Quiet, hm?" He brought her out of her thoughts. She let out a low sound and took a deep breath.
"It won't be long before you're part of us, girl." The voice rang through her mind, bringing a whole new spur of horrible thoughts. Her eyes shot open as she tried to focus her vision. Everything was so blurry, but she could faintly make out the man walking out of the room. As soon as the door slammed shut, she felt tears start to well up in her eyes as she thought about what she'd be like had she actually been apart of their organization. The thoughts mixed with the impossible idea of hurting her friends only made the pain increase more, leaving her to start sobbing as she sat there.
She was doing all she could to keep herself sane, from the visions that plagued her mind. It was hard, but she kept thinking of her loved ones. She tried to calm down but her happy thoughts were starting to be replaced with more horrifying visions, causing more tears to run down her cheeks as she kept muttering 'no' under her breath.
"Can you see anything?"
Shimazaki glanced around. It was dark all around, but the glowing auras coming from the espers around him were all he could see. Rubbing his face, he shook his head as he looked around further. Distant auras were around, showing that there were many espers around. After so long with the girl, he could distinguish her aura from any other, no matter how similar the colors were. However, his sliver of hope was slowly starting to shatter as he couldn't find that lavender glow anywhere.
"Try harder, it's only showing in close range," he told the group. Two hands became six as he felt the strength of his power grow. It wasn't something he was used to, but if it could help them find the missing part of their family, he was more willing to do anything possible.
He shook his head again and looked out. There was a huge flurry of auras in the distance.
"Do you see it?" Shigeo's voice asked next to him.
"I do. Do you think...." He trailed off as dread chilled him to the bone. The man swallowed hard as he closed his eyes snapping out of it. As soon as he felt their hands move away from his arms, he turned his head to the other three adults and let out a deep breath he had been holding.
"I don't think it's gonna be easy to get her back," he told them.
"Why, what did you two see?" Minegishi asked, feeling hope that Ryou had found her.
"Its... Hard to tell exactly, but there were so many auras." Shigeo explained.
"And in the middle of all that, I could see hers."
"You don't think..."
"It could be a possibility because we never got word from a handful of their whereabouts."
"What are you guys talking about?" Reigen asked, placing his hands on his hips. "Claw might be still going, even without Touchiro running it." Minegishi stated. "Why would that happen?" Ritsu pondered.
"Well, when you have devotion and loyalty to someone, you'd do what you can. Or maybe they're trying to re-establish it for themselves," Serizawa answered as he gripped the cuffs of his suit tightly.
"Then we need a plan,"
"Easy, I'll teleport in there and get out." Shimazaki claimed. "That won't be easy, or safe. There was something happening in the middle of her aura, I don't know what it was, but it's not safe." Shigeo told him after grabbing his arm, "I think we should find the place and see what's going on before we make any moves." There was silence amongst the group befoee the man sighed.
"Alright, but we need to hurry."
"Two of us can go around that area and figure out what's surrounding it. Then we'll come back and make a plan and carry out as soon as possible." Minegishi explained, then looked to his husband. "We don't know where it is, so either you or kid have to go and bring someone with you as backup."
"I'll go with Mob," Reigen offered, then walked over and placed a hand on the kid's shoulder. "We have an investigation around that area, anyways. So we'll go! Just like old times, right, Mob?" He looked to the boy who has grown much taller over the years.
"Right."
Later that night, everyone waited at their separate homes, although packed to go to Shimazaki and Minegishi's house once they got word that the two were on their way home.
"So, do you see anything?" Reigen asked as he walked down the sidewalk with the boy. Shigeo looked around, then noticed a building. Although it looked like a normal apartment complex, he could tell there was something off with it. Pulling his hood further over his head, he stopped and faced the building. He lifted his hand used a small amount of power to see if thats all that it was. But, it showed him that there was some sort of barrier that blocked his abilities from even leaving his hand. Putting his hand back in his pocket, he looked to Reigen again and nodded towards the building.
"That's it. Let's head back." He explained shortly. The man nodded in agreement after glancing at the building. "We'll finish walking down the street and turn the corner," Reigen spoke up. As the other agreed to it, they continued their walk to avoid any suspicious activity. Once they rounded the block, the man called a taxi to get them back home.
"There's a barrier that's blocking powers," Mob explained once everyone was gathered at the house. "So, we might not be able to rely on our powers for this. I did notice an alley next to the building, so there may be a way in. Other than that, we may have to call for backup. I know just who to call," the boy excused himself and walked out of the room, going through the hall and to another room so he could talk better.
"Whatever plan we come up with, I want to be able to kick someone's ass." Shimazaki stated, leaning back against the couch. "I think we all want to do that, Shima." Minegishi explained, grabbing his hand and holding it tightly. "Whoever was behind all this, especially them." He clenched his free hand into a fist as Mob walked back into the room.
"They'll be here early in the morning, my backup." He spoke up to the rest of the group. "Then in meantime, we should try to get rest. Won't be any good to fight if we're tired." Reigen claimed before walking off to the hall. He came back with pillows and blankets, handing them to the kids, then to Serizawa. The couple of the household agreed and retreated to their room to get rest for the events that'd be happening the following day.
Although, after a couple of hours, sleep was impossible for Shigeo. He tossed and turned on the pallet made on the floor. Eventually, he sat up and pulled his blanket and pillow into his arms. Getting to his feet, the boy walked to the hall and down a few doors to the girl's room. He hesitated for a moment, then turned the doorknob and opened the door to the room. To his surprise, he saw Takenaka sitting on the floor with his back pressed up to Cookie's bed. Though, when he heard the door open, he jumped and looked to who was there.
"Oh, hey." He mumbled, feeling himself relax almost immediately. "Can't sleep either?" Shigeo asked, walking over and sitting next to him.
"Of course not. How can I?"
"I feel the same. It's so hard to sleep, knowing something bad is happening. Makes you wanna run out and go help now..."
"Definitely."
The two sat there and talked for awhile, before Shou, Teru, and Ritsu came in with the same reasons. They all tried to feel better with funny stories, but the negative feelings were still there.
"She still has this shirt?!" Ritsu pulled out a shirt from the girl's closet. Turning around, he showed them it had been his favorite Spider-Man shirt from middle school. The group of boys started to laugh at the idea, then came over and joined him in digging through her clothes, finding things that previously belonged to them when they were younger and much more smaller.
"Hey, here's her pride jacket." Shou pulled the multi-colored varsity jacket and showed the rest of the group. "Hey, I brought mine too." Teru gasped, taking the clothing from the other. "I think we all did? Me and Nii-san did, definitely." Ritsu glanced to the others and they had agreed.
"Then let's show some pride and wear them tomorrow." Takenaka stated with a small smile. They all agreed and pulled their jackets out of their bags, laying them all on the bed.
After awhile of talking, the five boys managed to fall asleep with hope in their hearts to save their missing friend. They made a pallet with their blankets and slept close together, anticipating the events that would come the next morning.

Shifting Perspectives - Ch. 7
Shou and Teru have a sleepover. Reigen gets some excercise.
Summary:
How many espers does it take to rescue one abducted conman?
Months after the events of the World Domination arc, Reigen disappears sometime between leaving the office and after-work plans. Serizawa finds himself the unwilling leader of a bunch of former Claw members and a couple of stubborn teenagers, determined to get Reigen back.

Teru double-checked that Shou was indeed pointing at the nondescript office building directly in front of them before turning back to him in astonishment.
“That’s the government facility?”
“Yep. Tricky bastards, aren’t they?”
The building was one among dozens smack in the middle of Spice City’s main financial district, where the government had clearly chosen to hide their operation in plain sight. A bold move, but with all the upheaval Spice City had experienced in recent months, Teru supposed it made sense for the government to have a base somewhere local.
Teru crossed his arms, looking up at the shadowy form of the building. Despite a night sky clear of clouds, the sliver of crescent moon above provided very little light. There wasn’t a single sign, whether truthful or disguise, to indicate the purpose of the building to a random passersby. No window lights broke the uniform darkness stretching up above them, either, barring the chance for any useful movement indicators behind curtains or blinds. The building practically exuded unfriendliness and unwelcomeness.
This wasn’t really a surprise – Teru didn’t expect them to usher in trespassers for a cup of tea – but it didn’t make their objective any easier. He considered for a moment, ears pricking for any sounds beyond the rumbling and honking of cars, faded and distant at this late – or, perhaps, early – hour.
“Okay, we need a plan of action. How much do you know about this place? Have you been inside?” Teru tapped his chin. “Do you know how many espers they have? I’d imagine it’s more than just the one we saw in the video, especially if this is where they’re keeping your father. That means we’re going to have to-”
Teru turned to look at Shou. Or rather, the space formerly occupied by Shou, as Shou was no longer there.
“Yo, blondie. Follow me, we’re gonna attract attention if we stand around talking out here. Not exactly a normal place for two teenagers at four a.m.”
Teru followed the sound of Shou’s voice just in time to see his short figure disappear behind the corner. He followed Shou around the building, catching up just in time to see him stop before the front door of the building directly across the street from the rear side of the government facility. Shou dug a key card from his pocket and swiped it through a scanner; the door unlocked with a click that seemed too loud, echoing out on the dark street. Teru glanced nervously behind them, feeling suddenly as though they were being watched. He didn’t like having the shuttered government building at his back.
Shou, unhurried and unconcerned, trotted through the small, empty lobby and led him up to a vacant office space on the eighth floor. He ignored the ‘For Rent’ sign pasted at a slight angle to the door, and opened it easily with a second key from his pocket.
Teru cautiously inspected the wide, mostly-empty space inside, trying to shake off the uncomfortable feeling that their mission had suddenly slipped out of his control. However, he noted with interest the large windows conveniently overlooking the government facility below, which would make spying from this perch a simple matter.
“Hmm. How lucky for you, that this space just happened to be empty.”
Shou grinned. “Yes. Very lucky. Very lucky that the consultation business that was based here had a fit of ghostly interference right around the time I figured out where they were holding my pops.”
Teru couldn’t help but grin back. “Oh my. Must have been quite the serious haunting case to force them to move out. You know, I happen to part-time as an exorcist for an up and coming psychic corporation. Perhaps I could diagnose; what kind of spectral activity were they experiencing?"
“Oh, you know – important documents going missing, printers producing vaguely threatening messages directed to various employees, and the occasional ghastly wail coming from the bathroom. The usual kind of thing.” Shou opened a closet door, still smirking. “And for some reason, it always starts back up again as soon as anyone else tries to move in.”
Teru laughed.
The opened closet revealed a shelf stocked with a jumbled stash of nonperishable food. Shou ripped open a granola bar with his teeth and ate half of it in one bite before tugging a tangle of bedding and spare clothes from the lower shelf of the closet, dumping it on the ground. He spread a sleeping bag on the floor, then tossed a package of something freeze-dried on top of it to complete something like a meal, moving all the while with the careless confidence of routine. Teru was beginning to suspect Shou slept here very, very often.
Teru pulled a health bar of his own from his bag and leaned against the wall, tearing it open. “So, this is where you’ve been living?”
Shou paused in sorting through the pile of fabric to look up at him with narrowed eyes. “Only sometimes. I told you, I needed, I mean wanted, to know where my pops was being kept. Keep an eye on things.” Shou shrugged in a tight flex of shoulders, and turned to pull out a wrinkled t-shirt, sniffing it gingerly.
Teru frowned, mulling this as he chewed. “I still don’t see why you don’t just leave him to rot, he doesn’t deserve your continued interest – he’s not exactly the pinnacle of parental behavior. I.e., he kinda tried to kill us all- ohhhh, is that why?”
If Shou was keeping an eye on a potential threat… yes, that explanation made perfect sense to Teru.
“What? No… I mean kinda, but… Ugh .” Shou flopped back onto the sleeping bag. “Look. He was stupid, and horrible, and pretty much insane with power. I haven’t figured out what exactly drove him to the point of ‘I-am-so-powerful-I-must-therefore-be-the-best-in-the-world-and-thus-I-must-rule-it,’ because that’s so idiotic I couldn’t even begin to explain where that kind of thinking comes from �� woah there, eat much? There’s some water in the closet, that’ll help with the coughing, breathe dude – but…”
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. Teru, still wheezing a little despite the water, occupied himself with very carefully examining the back of his own hand. His glittery purple nail polish had chipped on one finger. He mourned that he hadn’t packed that bottle so he could repair the damage, return the nail to its formerly pristine smoothness.
“I don’t know. It’s just, there was that fight with Ritsu’s brother, and some of the things he said after, and then he… he gave up , he, he let them lead him away. And he’s stayed . He doesn’t have to, I’m pretty sure he could break out if he wanted, he definitely could have at the beginning. But he’s staying locked up, like he deserves, like he owes to, to everyone, to society. He’s like… paying his dues, I guess. And it just… it makes me wonder, ya know? If he’s changing. If he’s reconsidering…”
Shou made an angry, frustrated noise, almost a growl. “But I don’t want to fall in the same trap I did before, when I confronted him! I was naïve enough to think he was still capable of change, before, when I didn’t know just how fucking insane, and how powerful, he was. But Mom says he didn’t used to be that way… And if he could change once, then maybe...”
Teru’s mind was roiling, burning with a need to explain… what exactly, he still couldn't formulate. So he chomped on his tongue and said nothing. The silence stretched.
Shou sat up straight in a sudden, swift movement. “Let’s just say, I’m curious, and leave it at that. Now would you leave it alone? I thought you wanted to get Reigen out, not pry into every little bit of my life. Next thing you’re gonna be asking me what my favorite color is.” He grinned, too brightly. “It’s red, by the way.”
Teru rolled his eyes, all too happy to end this conversation that had wandered into places he didn’t want to think about too closely. “Yeah, okay. So, what do you know about this place?”
“I’ve snuck inside once or twice. I made a drawing of the basic layout; or at least, the important parts. It’s around here somewhere, in the closet probably.” Shou stretched, then curled up in the sleeping bag. “I have some ideas, but let’s deal with it tomorrow. First, we sleep. I’m fucking exhausted.”
“Wait, what? But we’re so close!”
Shou snorted. “We are not , they've got all kinds of security in that place. We gotta think this through first.” He cracked an eye open, a pale blue slice staring Teru down. “We’re gonna do this smart, yeah? We know who has him, and where he probably is. No reason to rush it and fuck everything up now.”
Well. Teru could hardly argue with that without making himself seem irresponsible. And no one out-responsibled Teruki Hanazawa.
Shou grumbled when he realized that since Teru hadn’t intended to sleep until they found Reigen, he hadn’t packed anything to sleep on (“ That’s like, the most obvious thing. You’re slacking, oh Prepared One.” ). However, he did toss Teru what seemed to be the only pillow, and a giant blanket he must keep around for the winter months. Teru settled down to try and sleep for what remained of the night.
It wasn’t two minutes before Shou was snoring softly, a tuft of bright red hair the only thing visible from the nest he’d made of the sleeping bag. Teru gave up after half an hour of lying awake, staring at the ceiling. He pulled out his binoculars and examined the building below, but the dim light from the street lamps failed to reveal anything new from this angle. No sudden signs pointing conveniently to Reigen’s precise location, so that Teru could dash in, get Reigen safely back to Spirits & Such, and return everything to normal.
Shou turned over in his sleep and sighed. Teru glanced at him, a bit wistful. He uncrossed and re-crossed his legs, fighting the impulse to get up and pace. Instead, he forced his limbs to relax, hoping the twitchiness would fade on its own. He examined the empty office space again, first merely what he could see from that spot, and then jumping on the excuse of poking into the bathrooms and shadowy corners to get up and walk around. After a thorough examination, he sat back down on his blanket. He was immediately hit with the urge to check it all again.
He slumped, pressing a hand to his face. By focusing on the mission and with Shou there to talk to, he’d been able to ignore or excuse his growing unease all day. But now he’d lost those foci, and could no longer ignore the issue without lying to himself.
Damn it. Fucking Claw.
Teru sighed, and finally acknowledged the irrational fears reawakened by Reigen’s abduction, which were never as buried as he liked to pretend. These were the fears of a hunted child, that had spawned habits of constant vigilance, and instant violence, and a push to grow skilled enough so that he would never have to worry about being a victim again. He’d be a hero like in the movies, made powerful -but unscathed- by his past. Or, so he’d thought.
Regardless, Claw was gone now, doomed by its own avarice. The monster that had conquered or devoured every esper it encountered, gorging itself on power and yet never reaching satiation, had finally run up against one who refused to be consumed. Shigeo had ripped the head from the beast, and Claw had crumbled to ash, its members defeated or reforged. Claw’s demise had brought Teru a peace he hadn’t realized he’d craved, and if he hadn’t owed Shigeo the world before…
‘…that’s so idiotic I couldn’t even begin to explain where that kind of thinking came from…’
Teru flinched. Shou had, without realizing it, just told him that his childhood boogieman was born from precisely the same ideas that he had once espoused to anyone who would stand still long enough. And given that he would make them stand still and listen, if necessary, that was quite a lot of people.
I’m not like that anymore, he told himself crossly. That’s the old me. I’m a different person now.
He wished he was as good at convincing himself as he was with everyone else.
Watching the building now, Teru couldn’t help but long for the reassurance of Shigeo’s immeasurable pool of power at his side. But then again, returning Shigeo’s master before he’d even noticed he was gone was a gift too good to pass up. Teru reassured himself once again that they’d certainly, definitely done the right thing by not telling him Reigen was gone. There was no reason he should feel guilty about not telling him. And there was certainly no reason why he should feel guilty that he wasn’t rushing in right now, right this very second, to get Reigen out. No reason at all; it was completely illogical.
Teru pulled his blanket over to the wall so that he could lean back, but didn’t have to lay all the way down, trying to trick his brain into relaxing enough to sleep. He watched the sky lighten, streaked with orange and red and pink, not a cloud in sight. The sun rose in jumps each time he opened his eyes from the light doze that was all he could manage, and Teru fought the inclination to wake up Shou just for the riot of complaints he knew would keep his own thoughts at bay.

“Ah, you’re awake. Good.”
Reigen turned to the door, interrupted mid-pace by the return of Nagata and the silent shadows of the guards.
As if you haven’t been watching me this whole time, you prick, he thought with irritation and a twinge of claustrophobia. He hadn’t quite been able to ignore the steadily blinking light of the camera ever since he’d woken up, groggy from either not enough sleep or too much. Without a phone, he had no idea how long he’d slept. Or even how long he’d been there.
I should probably wear a watch, he mused. All fancy businessmen wear watches, why haven’t I thought of this before. And then the next time I get abducted, I’ll be prepared -”
“Ahem.”
Reigen blinked. Nagata was staring at him, looking slightly miffed that Reigen wasn’t hanging on his every word.
“I said, I’m curious why you didn’t bother changing?”
They both looked at the set of fatigues, still folded neatly on the desk where Reigen had found them upon waking up.
“Forgive me, but I would have assumed you’d want to change out of the clothes you’d been wearing for almost two days. I'm sorry if they’re not quite to your… exacting tastes,” a sideways glance at Reigen’s cheaply-made and slightly-too-large suit, “but I’m afraid the only other spare clothing we have are prisoners’ jumpsuits. I thought you might prefer this…?”
He sounded almost wounded that his ‘gift’ had been rejected. Reigen fought not to roll his eyes. Yet he was startled to hear he’d only been here for a couple of days – it felt much longer than that. He also wasn’t about to admit that not only had he been feeling too vulnerable to give up his last remaining possessions, but also that a change of clothes into something so distinct would interfere with his plans. Instead, he simply shrugged and mumbled something indistinct, not meeting Nagata’s eyes.
Nagata contemplated him a moment more, face blanker than Reigen would have liked.
“Are you ready to return to our earlier conversation?”
“Oh… um. Y-yes, yes.” Reigen swallowed loudly. He wiped sweaty palms on his pants. “Yes, I think I’m ready.”
Nagata smiled in condescending approval. He waved the esper guards out the door, as he had last time, then pulled the single chair out and gestured for Reigen to take a seat. Instead, Reigen hesitated, and began tentatively.
“Listen, I was wondering… it, um, it would be nice to be able to walk around for a bit… stretch my legs, as it were, it’s a bit cramped in here… perhaps, we could take a walk while we chat?”
A line dented between Nagata’s eyebrows in an immediate frown of displeasure. “How about we have our discussion here, first, and then you can take a walk for as long as you want, all on your own?”
Reigen turned his gaze slowly to the door, behind which he knew the guards were standing. He waited.
“Ah, well, yes, but the guards will maintain a distance, of course. They’d be just close enough to keep you in eyesight.”
“That’s… you and I both know that distance doesn’t make a difference with… them. Sir,” he hastily remembered to add.
“Then we’ll come up with another arrangement.” Nagata’s words were too clipped, the information he wanted tantalizingly just beyond his reach. He sat in the chair instead of waiting for Reigen to take it, to reinforce that he wasn’t leaving.
Reigen bit his lip, and looked at the ground. He rubbed the knuckles of one hand with the other, then tapped his fingers against his thighs. He shuffled his feet, glancing at the door again and edging away from it, just a little, as though nervous of the people behind it even with solid steel between them. He looked everywhere but at the agent, who sat intently before him, his building annoyance crackling through the air. Reigen held the silence for five seconds… ten…
“I… I’m sorry, I… I’m not sure… I think I need some more time to think it over, after all…”
Nagata’s eyes narrowed. Reigen fought to not hold his breath.
Nagata studied Reigen, and tapped his fingers on the desk. Abruptly he stood up from the chair, straightening his clothing of nonexistent wrinkles. “On second thought, walking and talking is good for the mind. Promotes clarity, and reflection. Let’s take a walk, just the two of us, hmm, Mr. Reigen? The guards can wait here until we come back.”
Reigen hesitated again before speaking. “Ah… yes. Okay. Um. Thank you.”
Nagata opened the door, firmly instructing the esper guards to remain there while he took the nervous, powerless, defenseless captive out for a walk around the facility. He didn’t even turn to look behind him as he began walking down the hall. Reigen followed docilely behind.
To Reigen’s surprise, Nagata didn’t immediately continue pressing him. He simply walked, with an occasional glance Reigen’s way, but slowly enough that Reigen could study their surroundings.
There wasn’t much to see, as he recalled from the hazy journey to his cell. Blank hallways, devoid of windows and décor; no billboards for memos or morale-boosting friendly office betting pools. For that matter, he only saw a couple of employees. Another black-clad woman whispered something to her older companion as Nagata and Reigen passed, who shook their graying head. A young bureaucrat or secretary with arms full of a stack of papers turned a corner, took one look at the two of them, and turned to scurry in the opposite direction. Reigen had to bite the inside of his cheek to hold back a casual “Huh, you always keep so few employees around in the middle of the day?”
For the middle of the day it was – as they turned another corner, he got his first glimpse of gleaming sunlight in what felt like weeks. Reigen stared around in surprise; they were on the second floor of the building, with a railing separating them from the open air above a large, eerily welcoming atrium. Brightly lit with natural light, a wall of windows formed the front of the building, through which a normal city road and accompanying sidewalks could be seen. The atrium looked more like the entrance floor of a large bank than a highly-secure government facility, although it was as empty as the rest of the building’s halls.
Reigen couldn’t help a raised brow at Nagata. “Didn’t realize the government was so welcoming to prying eyes and public opinions on your operations. Say, what’s the general consensus on abduction? ‘Cause I’d like to add my two cents.”
Nagata ignored him, watching someone in a finely-tailored suit walk swiftly past on the sidewalk outside. “The glass is bulletproof, and one-sided – we’re not as visible to them as it appears. Nor as vulnerable.” He looked up, directly across the space. “For example, there are shutters, should we need them.”
Reigen followed his gaze, eye-level on the opposite side of the wall from where they stood. Sure enough, there were rolls of thick metal waiting to close over the windows at a moment’s notice. The sight was a shock in contrast to the atrium’s first impression, and he gave the large space a second look with a more critical eye.
There were cameras everywhere, on the ceilings, on the walls; some with obvious red blinking lights, and probably some he couldn’t even see. There were also several odd blank metal panels set into the walls – weapons lockers, perhaps, though his imagination could spin something worse. The panels blended in just fine with the tastefully bland decor unless you knew to look for things that seemed just a bit… off.
This wasn’t merely a front; this whole place could be easily turned into a conveniently-located trap. Reigen felt cold just thinking about the possibilities.
Nagata was watching him again, leaning on one elbow resting on the bannister. He had apparently decided this was a good place to continue their ‘chat’. Reigen, his rapidly-adapting plan whirring in the back of his mind, certainly had no objections.
“So tell me, Mr. Reigen – given that you’re in the industry of being a psychic without actually being psychic, I’m curious. Was it worth it to hire an esper employee, or do you find all the additional violence in your life hasn’t made up for the validation it provides for your business?”
For one horror-stricken second Reigen thought that he, that Mob , had been found out, until he realized Nagata was referring to Serizawa. Still, he didn’t like what those words implied; he paused before saying, slowly, “I’m not sure what you mean by that.”
“Well, may I be frank?” Nagata continued without waiting for an assent. “You seem more… cautious around espers than I would have expected, for someone on record for spending so much time with one in your daily life. But their world is a dangerous and vicious one, and I can only assume that having to deal with the messes a psychically-gifted thug instigates has led to experiences that taught you that kind of caution.”
Reigen turned away before Nagata could see his expression. He himself didn’t want to know what his face looked like.
“It’s the kind of behavior I’d expect, from someone with his past.” Nagata must have taken his silence for agreement. “He and his friends are a bunch of former terrorists. Honestly I’m not sure how they got away scot-free the first time; Joseph was never very clear about it. Something about a pass from the Prime Minister. Though of course, he’s one of them as well, so who knows what really went down…”
He moved just a little closer, and lowered his voice. Out of Nagata’s line of sight, Reigen finally allowed his hands to curl into fists.
“Mr. Reigen, I know you must be concerned with the repercussions. But we can help you. We can make sure that, whoever it is, never knows it was you who told us. So tell me. Is it Serizawa Katsuya, or one of his friends? Multiple of them working together, perhaps? The way they tend to band together, it wouldn’t surprise me.”
And with that, Reigen officially couldn’t take it anymore.
“Mr. Nagata. I’m so sorry for the abject failure in your upbringing that caused you to become such a miserable person. Or maybe it’s just that your character is so flawed, there was never any hope for you.”
Nagata stared at him, blinking rapidly, trying to process the sudden shift in conversation and demeanor.
“But in case there’s hope for you yet, allow me to fill you in on some missed lessons.” Reigen stepped forward, closer to Nagata, who had the look of a deer in headlights as he hastily tried to figure out what had gone awry.
“Some people choose to be good, and some people choose to be bad. This is true of everyone, whether they have psychic powers or not. Therefore, there are psychic people who choose to be good, like my associates have done. Just some coincidentally-psychic people who, despite errors in their pasts, now want to live normal lives and contribute to society the best that they can.”
Reigen leaned a little closer.
“And following the same line of logic, there are, of course, non-psychic people who choose to be bad.”
Reigen smiled, a bright baring of teeth. Then he sunk his fist into Nagata’s face with the full force of his weight behind it.*
Nagata fell back against the balcony’s railing, hands going instinctively out to catch himself. Reigen kept moving, using the momentum from the punch to twist, sweeping a leg up for a follow-up kick. With all his focus on the movement, he barely gave notice to his weakly-protesting conscience before switching his aim to as high on Nagata’s chest as he could, high enough for just the right amount of leverage...
He drove his heel into the top of Nagata’s sternum. Nagata tipped over the balcony, and plunged out of sight.
Reigen didn’t wait to see the results; he’d just have to hope Nagata didn’t land badly enough for the fall to be fatal. He skidded to the staircase, leaping down stairs two or three at a time, and bolted for the front door. He flung himself at it, hoping desperately that it would open…
It did. But not quietly.
Reigen ran out the door, almost blinded by the brilliant sunlight, hysteria bubbling into a shriek of startled laughter to match the cacophony of dozens of screeching alarms. Direct sequel to "And Maybe...Some Things Are That Simple"
After half a decade away from Seasoning City, Teru has a lot of catching up to do. Unfortunately, some people are less than welcoming. Turns out, there's a reason why.

When they meet again, it’s at Spirits and Such. The smell of stale cigarette smoke and incense that assaults him the minute the door opens brings with it such an intense nostalgia that it stops Teru in his tracks. It’s a feeling he’s never experienced before, but it brings with it a tide of memories of a lonely young boy, looking for anything to fill the emptiness of an afternoon, weekend, summer. Memories of being wanted. Memories of being safe.
Teru doesn’t realize that there are tears pricking at his eyes until he sees Reigen, clicking away on his laptop, as if he’d never once moved in all the years he’d been gone.
“Oh, hello Mob,” Reigen says, looking up as the door chime announces their arrival, “This is unexpected. Who’s your friend?”
Teru swears he feels his heart drop into his shoes, but the moment is short. The old con artist squints at him from behind a pair of square-rimmed glasses sitting on his nose, and Teru can visibly see the question shift into recognition. Warm relief spreads through him as Reigen pulls himself up, still squinting incredulously over the edge of his glasses.
“Hanazawa?” he asks, as Teru crosses the distance of the small room to greet his old father figure mentor, “What the hell did you do to your ears? How many holes did you poke in them to get all those earrings in there?”
Teru can’t help but chuckle, clasping Reigen’s hand. Then, succumbing to instinct, Teru pulls the older man into a tight hug.
“Careful, careful now you youngster! You’re gonna break these old bones!” Reigen splutters, but leans into the contact, returning with a hug just as tight. Teru never quite reached Reigen’s height, but for once can’t bring himself to care. He instead revels in the smell of smoke and stale sweat, the feeling of hair tickling his face, the feeling of being safe.
“Welcome home, my boy,” Reigen says, after they break apart, “You planning on staying long?”
Teru swipes at his face with the palm of his hand, grinning despite the clear evidence of moisture on his cheeks. “Forever, Master Reigen. If I can.”
Behind them, he swears he can feel Kageyama smilling.
The next time is in response to an open invitation from Kageyama, who offered to tour Teru around his office. He jumps at the chance to tour around the halls of his alma mater, Paprika University, and make a few calls to former professors before going on to meet Kageyama at the designated rendezvous.
It’s incredible, he realizes, how little the halls mean to him. They had been just another stepping stone on this cyclical path of his, with no great affinity for any one location or person. Compared to his feelings upon returning to Spirits and Such, the entire campus feels…hollow.
Except not so much, because now it’s more than just a place he once attended. Now it’s Kageyama’s place, and he wonders if he would feel the other’s aura seeping into the brickwork, should he focus.
“Hey, Haystack!”
Teru startles, and turns to see a dark haired woman approaching him at breakneck pace. For a moment he struggles to place her, but there are a limited number of people who knew him from the haystack days, and even fewer who would dare ever mention it.
“Ah, hello there Kurata-san,” he says, trying to smile pleasantly as the woman bears down on him with the full weight of her personality. She’s glowering at him, looking ready to spit nails.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing here?” she demands, but before Teru can open his mouth she continues, “And that’s Professor Kurata, to you, you no good air-headed bimbo.”
It takes Teru about a second and a half longer than it should have to recover from the verbal assault. Kurata continues to glare, and this combined with the fact that she has the gall to be taller than him by a couple centimeters, actually irks him. Despite this, Teru does his best to give a good-natured chuckle and grin up at her.
“I didn’t realize that the grounds of my alma mater were off-limits to me,” he says, giving one of his most blinding smiles. It, of course, fails to phase Kurata in the least bit.
“You know as well as I do that that’s not what I’m—”
“Hello Tome-chan.” Neither of them had heard Kageyama approach, and yet there he stands, looking entirely nonplussed at the way his two friends glare at each other.
“Oi, Mob,” Kurata says, placing a hand on Teru’s shoulder in what could have been a friendly gesture. “I just found this lost child wandering about and wanted to know if you needed me to escort him to his next class. Or like. Off the campus. Or to another planet. We have a mutual telepath friend with a record of alien contact, so I could get that arranged.”
Kageyama gives her a fond, albeit strained smile. “That won’t be necessary. Thank you though.”
“You’re sure about that?” Kurata prods, the grip on Teru’s shoulder tightening.
“Yes. Don’t worry, he’s my guest.”
The pair share a tense moment that leaves Teru drowning in the lack of context. Eventually, though, Kurata gives out a heavy sigh, shoulders slumping.
“’Kay, if you say so,” she mutters, releasing her grip on Teru, and patting him on the shoulder twice in a conciliatory manner. “But if you need anything, just holler.”
With that, she stomps off in search of her next victim, or so Teru assumes. At this point in his life, he has fought off all manner of evil spirits and megalomaniacal espers, but he can’t quite recall ever being that terrified.
“Did I do something wrong?” he asks, when he’s sure that she’s out of earshot.
“Oh, no, I don’t think so,” Kageyama replies, crow’s feet appearing between his eyebrows as he frowns slightly. “At least. Not anymore. We worked it out.”
Teru hums noncommittally in response, keenly aware that he’s missing a lot of context here. That said, he really isn’t in a place to demand to be filled in. After all, it seems that the good Professor Kurata has been looking out for Kageyama, while he’s been off doing whatever it is he’s been doing. Still. The entire thing has left him off-kilter.
“Hanazawa-kun.” Kageyama interrupts his thoughts. “I have a little while before my next meeting, so I’d be happy to show you my lab now.”
Kageyama’s face is…precious. Teru can’t think of any other way to describe it, even as he feels his heart leap into his throat. There’s trepidation there, excitement and anxiety swirling just under the other’s calm façade. It’s the kind of expression, Teru knows, that his old friend only wore when he was making himself especially vulnerable—sharing a piece of himself that was both precious and private.
The confusion that he’d felt towards Kurata fades away, leaving Teru only with a slight pang of jealousy. She has, after all, gotten to see this side of Kageyama for years.
But again, he doesn’t have anybody to blame but himself. He just hopes she knows how lucky she is.
This time, Teru finds himself seated at the table in the kitchen of the Kageyama family home. Both brothers had lived away for some time, Kageyama had explained, but after establishing himself at the local university the parents had asked him to move back in. At the moment, they were off traveling, happy to know that their house was being cared for by their eldest son.
“It’s a bit lonely,” Kageyama concludes, “Which is why I’m glad that you and Ritsu were able to join me for dinner.”
“We don’t see each other enough, brother,” Ritsu replies, sincerely as far as Teru can tell. They’re seated across from each other, around the worn wooden table.
“It’s your home too, you know,” Kageyama chides. He’s in the kitchen, finishing whatever meal he’s worked to prepare for them. His request that guests remain seated is being honored, but not without a great deal of tension crackling between the two. If Kageyama notices, he doesn’t mention it.
“So,” Teru says, grabbing hopelessly at conversation topics. He’d thought he and Ritsu had made their peace years ago, but clearly he’s done something to mess that up again. Despite his best efforts though, he can’t figure out exactly why the other man continues to glare at him whenever Kageyama’s turned back to cooking.
It’s disconcerting. But on the other hand, it’s kind of nice to see that the younger brother hasn’t changed all that much. Sure, he’s taller (even moreso than his brother, which definitely makes Teru the shortest of the squad), has changed his haircut into something short and prickly, and has quite a few more worry lines, but he’s definitely the same middle school student that had challenged him in the street all those years ago.
Still. They make it to the actual dinner part without lighting anything on fire. That’s definitely a win.
However, the moment that Kageyama has finished setting the table with the variety of food that he’s prepared, a cell phone goes off. It’s an old meme song, high pitched and obnoxious, and Ritsu goes for his pocket with a sigh. Kageyama doesn’t seem bothered at all that their dinner had been interrupted, waiting patiently as Ritsu grumbles into the phone.
(Seriously dude? I’m chilling with my brother today, I told you that. What do you mean an emergency, what the hell did you do? Okay, okay, just…try not to bleed out until I get there.)
By the time Ritsu is standing, heading for the door, Kageyama has already beat him there, offering his younger brother two portions of dinner to take with him.
“For little brother Shou, when you rescue him,” Kageyama says, words barely loud enough for Teru to hear. “Be safe, Ritsu.”
And then the younger brother is gone, vanishing out the door with his spiky aura flaring behind him.
And Teru is alone with Kageyama.
They sit quietly to eat, silence punctuated by the clack of chopsticks as Teru contemplates what to say next. When he’s absolutely certain that Kageyama is not trying to formulate words of his own, and that he won’t interrupt, Teru clears his throat.
“So…little brother’s job at the bank seems to have gotten more dangerous than I’d have thought.”
Kageyama cracks a worried smile. “Ah well. He hasn’t worked there for three years now. He’s running his own business.”
“Seriously?” Teru asks, flabbergasted. Business running is his shtick, after all. “With a sour disposition like his?”
“It’s not really his business,” Kageyama informs him with a chuckle, “It’s Suzuki’s. Ritsu just signed on as a partner.” He chews his food slowly. “Oh, ah. They’re consultants. For the government.”
Well. That is a bit more interesting than Teru had imagined. And it makes that phone call less mysterious but significantly more worrying.
He decides instead to change the topic.
“You’ve gotten better,” Teru muses. “At explaining things.”
“It’s a work in progress.” His friend is still frowning down at his food. “But you learn a lot, from being a teacher. I’m still not particularly good at it. If I was better, then I suppose you’d be having an easier time right now.”
“An easier time?” Teru asks, the words coming slowly as though he’s tiptoeing on thin ice.
“Mmhmm.” Kageyama finally looks up at him, brows drawn into an anxious frown. “I suppose I have to apologize for that. For the way that others are treating you, since you got back.”
“You mean that wasn’t just my charming personality?”
“No, although it is very charming,” Kageyama continues, “They just don’t believe me, when I tried to explain that you didn’t understand my confession to you, a couple months ago.”
It takes Teru three beats to realize he’s stopped breathing.
(If anybody were to ask Hanazawa Teruki if he was in love with Kageyama Shigeo, he would tell them the truth: Of course.
But the fact was that nobody asked him. Sure, lots of people knew, given how much he failed in subtlety, but nobody asked. And so, Teru was content never to say a word.
It was too much of a risk, ruining the relationship they had over feelings that he was certain would never be returned.)
“What?” Teru manages to stammer. They’ve been sitting there, in awkward silence. The spoon in Kageyama’s hand is curling rapidly, twisting and untwisting while its owner looks away, ears tipped with pink.
(He’s rewinding now, rewinding to the text messages that he’d left unanswered for three solid months: Are you coming home after? I’ve missed you.)
“I know,” he says at length, still not looking at Teru, “It was a mistake, on my part. I’ve gotten better at communicating, but ah…well. I made a mess of things on my end. I misinterpreted your silence for a rejection, which was why I was so glad when you wanted to meet again.”
(A confession. That had been a confession. And Teru had left him hanging for literal months, thinking that he had been cut off.)
“I don’t…ahm. I don’t know if you would be interested, and if you’re not, then please disregard all this, but I thought it would be best if…” Kageyama swallows visibly, “Hanazawa, I really, really like you. Would you…would you go out with me?”
He’s left no room for the confession to be mistaken for anything else, Teru realizes as his brain finally catches up to the moment. And then that traitorous part of his mind follows it up with, he sounds like a high schooler.
Looks like one too. The nervous earnestness in Kageyama’s face, the way he clutches both hands together in front of him—for all that he’s grown in the past years, he’s still Kageyama.
The realization crashes down on Teru with a flood of relief.
“Kageyama-kun…” Teru says, then stops himself, “Shigeo. I…I’m…”
There are so many words bubbling to the surface right now, in the slurry of emotions that he hadn’t expected. And yet, in all the pomp and glitter that he uses to disguise his true persona, Teru manages to pull on the single truth he knows better than anything.
“I’m sorry.” The words form in a croaked whisper and hang in the kitchen. “I’m not good enough for you.”
He curls in on himself, arms wrapped tight around his middle, fighting off the feeling that he wants to be violently ill. The entire world feels like it’s swaying, turning on an axis and leaving him to try to find the middle ground. But there’s no battle strategy for this, the one outcome he never dared imagine. All there is, is honesty, because Shigeo deserves that much.
“Me too,” he manages to say, eyes screwed tight and blood pounding in his ears, “I fell in love with you…I don’t know. Forever ago? You changed my life. And I can’t…I can’t repay that. I don’t deserve anything else from you.”
There are hands on his face, gentle, so gentle, guiding it. Teru doesn’t dare open his eyes, terrified for what he’ll see. Terrified at the thought that Shigeo can see him—all his selfishness, ever ugly secret he’s ever tried to hide, ever appetite he’s ever tried to curb, and all the failures he’s experienced in the process. Terrified that once he’s seen for what he is, Shigeo will leave.
“It’s okay,” he hears Shigeo murmur, “I don’t think I’m that good either. Do you think…do you think that perhaps we can try, though?”
Teru opens his eyes, and is greeted by Shigeo, crouching beside him, eyes so soft, so gentle…so hopeful.
And suddenly, Teru knows without a shadow of the a doubt, that Shigeo has always seen him. From their very first encounter, he has always seen Teru, and never recoiled in disgust. And he sees him now.
It’s more terrifying, Teru realizes belatedly, to be seen for who he really is, and be loved.
He knows what to do with rejection. This, however, is totally new.
Frighteningly new, and…exciting. Hopeful.
“Yes,” he croaks, “I would very much like that, Shigeo.”

MP100 “Characters & Such Official Guidebook” - Interviews ENG Translation
The Characters & Such Official Guidebook was released mid-April 2019 as a guide for all things related to MP100 season 1 & 2. The guidebook also includes interviews with the voice actors of the main five characters (Mob, Reigen, Dimple, Ritsu, Teru), followed by interviews with Director Tachikawa, Series Coordinator Seko, Character Designer Kameda & finally with ONE himself.
Contains a bunch of interesting trivia and conversations (eg. Tachikawa and Kameda looked at fan art before they began the anime, an alternative past for Reigen was once considered, plenty of references to S3 & broccoli arc.) This is a pretty long read, so please enjoy!

ITOU SETSUO [Mob]
On being asked how he approached voicing Mob during the audition, he says that he went for something flat as Mob doesn’t really inspire “main character” vibes in him.
He takes it as a compliment when he is told that he’s like Mob as a person.
Initially he didn’t think too much of himself in the role as Mob but after being told by co-stars just how well his voice and performance suit the character, he began to believe it too.
On being asked what’s so charming about Mob, Itou says his honesty, and that he doesn’t take a negative viewpoint. Brings up that when Mob is against a foe, rather than “are you my enemy?” he’ll ask “what are you doing here?”.
Itou’s favourite character is Teru, as he thinks the way Teru behaves with his powers originally is the most realistic in terms of standard human nature.
He says the same thing applies to Shou & Touichirou.
The fact that Mob is different is his strength; the fact that he doesn’t think of his powers as anything special. He gives credit to Reigen for Mob thinking this way about his powers.
“At first, Mob-kun suffered because of his powers. But then he meets shishou, who tells him that his powers are just one part of him - this is linked to why Mob-kun is so charming now.”
Mob considers “you shouldn’t use your powers against people” a given fact.
Itou originally found it difficult to know how far he should go adding emotion to Mob’s voice.
Since MP100 is the first show Itou has been a regular & leading part for, he wanted to be the first person in the recording booth for episode 1, and as a result ended up arriving 45 minutes early.
Asked about his favourite scenes from S1 & S2, he mentions the scene that’s stayed with him is when Mob first appears in S1E1.
Has a few scenes he mentions as favourites; he loves the whole Teru vs Mob fight, but especially when Teru is shouting while using his powers as he recalls the passion Matsuoka [Teru] had when recording it.
He mentions when Mob saves Ritsu in S1E8, also mentions that’s something they covered in the stage play, and that it makes him emotional thinking about it.
Says he loves the scene when Mob shouts “Shishou!” as Reigen is ‘killed’ by Sakurai in S1E11.
Mentions S2E1 as well. “Mob-kun doesn’t express his emotions much, but he does then. Showing his powers to another while crying. I remember being glad when I first read the script for episode 1 as it’s a scene I wanted to do. I think of it as the moment Mob-kun starts to change.”
When asked about the stage play, says he thinks the Mob he portrays in the stage play is slightly different to the one he portrays in the anime.
Asks the fans to please continue to watch over MP100 and Mob’s growth, and it would be good if we could all continue to support MP100 as much as we can, from a stage play angle as well.
SAKURAI TAKAHIRO [Reigen]
Sakurai says if he were to have powers he’d probably use them to commit wrongdoings with.
Asked on his impressions of Reigen, says he sees Reigen as an “unbalanced person”, but thought he was mysterious in season 1.
Thought of Reigen as a fraud and not a good person in S1, but with S2 we see his uchizura (private, more ‘real’ self) and real emotions, so his feelings re: Reigen changed from S1 to S2. “It was hard to know who he was, back in season 1.”
“So you felt pretty strongly that he was simply a fraud?” Sakurai; “Well, he lies to people, but at the same time he does actually put some work in (laughs). Clients go home feeling refreshed, so he definitely gives a good massage.”
Calls Reigen eloquent, and that the things that he says are sound. Calls him a good speaker. Brings up his speech to the “claw guys” (likely referencing S1E12). “He can be irresponsible, but he’s got a mysterious intelligence.”
Says that from the middle to the end of S2 there would be as many as 20-30 people in the studio.
Asked about his favourite episodes S1+S2 inclusive, says S2E1 and that the transition from the end of S1 to S2 is smooth with it. “A really fantastic episode”, “you can also see signs of Mob’s growth.”
“On that note, when Reigen hears that Mob got a girlfriend...” Sakurai; “It’s a shock (laughs). His mind goes blank. ‘There’s no way Mob managed to get a girlfriend,’ is what’s running through his mind. He doesn’t celebrate it. Actually, it’s an upsetting thing for him - since Mob would be all over her, Reigen’s business would end up in trouble (laughs).”
Sakurai describes the “Shishou and Deshi” relationship that Mob & Reigen originally have as something that’s quite fabricated and disregards a lot of truths.
“Reigen was an adult floating in limbo for some time, and starts a business in a calculating move. And it starts going well once he meets Mob in their chance encounter.”
“The nickname ‘Mob’ signifies him as a boy without a presence, and yet it’s from that point that Mob starts to grow, and something like a desire for recognition sprouts within him.” [TN: This appears to be implying that Reigen began the ‘Mob’ nickname.]
Sakurai considers Reigen arc 1) a story in which Mob's popularity skyrockets 2) a story in which we see a more raw side of Reigen and start to like him more.
On being asked if there’s any part of Reigen that he sees in himself, starts off with saying that he tends to give out advice to those younger than him (he’s in his 40s and implies he can’t compare himself to someone who’s young in their 20s). Then after knowing what’s running through Reigen’s head in S2; “I suppose we do overlap in one way or another.”
Sakurai says he was very much one of the “mob” (a nobody) in his 10s.
Finally, asked to give a message to fans; “I’d like to do a Season 3, so please continue to love Mob Psycho 100.”
OOTSUKA AKIO [Dimple]
Asked about his thoughts on MP100, Ootsuka says that the art style of the manga caught his eye - he thought it was fun that the anime doesn’t lose the style of the manga while making it more stylish.
Finds in modern manga, the trend is an ordinary kid will get powers by some chance & the adventure starts from there, but found it interesting that in MP100 Mob has had powers since he was tiny & the adventure begins after he comes crying to Reigen with “I don’t know what to do”.
Also enjoys how Mob isn’t exactly the “main character” type. Thinks that it’s a breath of fresh air in the shounen manga genre.
On being asked about Dimple’s charm, Ootsuka; “He’s bad, but you can’t hate him.”
Says that Dimple is ugly but that’s fun, since most of the time mascot characters are cute.
When asked what was running through his mind when preparing for the role of Dimple, he says “dishonesty, slyness.” Acting as if he’s smarter than people but he actually isn’t.
“Speaking of dishonest/sly adults, I feel Reigen is a different type.” Ootsuka; “I’d say Reigen is more dishonest/sly than Dimple... nah, actually they’re about the same. (Laughs)”
When asked if there was anything he finds difficult about playing Dimple, he says that with other acting jobs he finds it hard to play a character where he can’t connect, but “there’s a similar kind of guy to Dimple that lives inside me. So I just go, ‘oi, come out’ (laughs)”.
Says he thinks we all have a bit of Dimple in us.
Ootsuka is also the narrator in MP100. Said that originally he felt there was a difference in the way he played Dimple & the narrator, but that difference kind of became smaller.
He was told to no longer put on a voice that sounds similar to the person Dimple is possessing for season 2, which disappointed him as he wanted to put on a Mob-like voice for when Dimple possesses Mob in S2E4.
Discussion of how director didn’t like Hoshino’s [Serizawa] original takes as they were too silly. [TN: this is mentioned again by Inoue [Suzuki] and Hoshino [Serizawa] in this interview.]
He recalls bursting into laughter over Iwasaki Hiroshi’s performance as Ishiguro in S1E12.
“Reigen becomes able to see Dimple as well in the last bit of Season 1, so he gains another conversation partner.” Ootsuka; “Reigen and Dimple, they both view the other as unnecessary (laughs). So the back-and-forth they have with that in mind is pretty fun.”
Asked about his favourite scenes or episodes, he says the end of S1E3. Dimple’s “Great morning, isn’t it, partner?” line really stuck with him.
Compares Dimple to a dog by Mob’s side.
“Dimple has the kind of face that you just might want to slap (laughs).” Ootsuka; “Well, that’s why I was careful to not give him a too audacious manner of speaking.” Says the interesting thing about his line of work is really having to think about how to say lines.
Also voiced Dimple for the live action adaptation [TN: AKA Netflix ver]. Says it was fun but found it a massive shame that he wasn’t able to bounce lines off of anyone.
“I really didn’t do much in middle school. I was just a chuunibyou (laughs).”
When asked to give a message to MP100 fans, “You guys wanna see more, right? There’s still more to adapt, isn’t there ;) (laughs). So, we can make a sequel to S2 a reality if everyone works together. A ‘if you speak up, then your dreams might come true!’ vibe (laughs).”
He makes a sneaky reference to Broccoli Arc and wanting to see it animated.
IRINO MIYU [Ritsu]
On being asked his initial thoughts on MP100, Irino states he originally thought it was a lighthearted jokey manga based on the art style and the way the story was introduced, so he was surprised as the story progressed.
States that Ritsu is a relatable character with the issues that he faces (eg wanting something that’s out of reach so hiding your want).
Asked about anything that was difficult to perform as Ritsu, he states his two-sided nature; his general honour-student self and the other side of him.
Says that when Ritsu enters into his darker side, rather than playing some kind of bad guy Ritsu is simply more frank with how he expresses himself. “He lets the emotions in his heart be heard one by one.”
Irino is asked if he personally admires Mob, to which he replies that he’s jealous of the fact that Mob is so unbeatable.
He says Ritsu must also have the experience of looking at Mob and thinking something like, “Compared to him, I’m just...”
States he himself, Ritsu, and just about anyone has likely yearned to become something overwhelming, but we don’t believe in our ability to achieve that.
Following this, interviewer comments that Mob carries feelings of unease in his heart even though he’s so unbeatable. Irino comments that something fun for him with MP100 is that Mob doesn’t really realise how unbeatable he is.
Something that Ritsu admires about his brother is that he doesn’t show off the fact that he’s unbeatable.
“Even with powers, there’s plenty of things you can’t do.” Irino; “Such as not being able to confess to the girl you like (laughs).”
“Seems like even if he abused his powers he’d still be able to turn heads.” Irino; “Because he’s charming - that’s something good about him. That’s why everyone loves him, and why he gives off main-character-of-a-shounen-manga vibes.”
Asked about his favourite scenes/episodes from seasons 1 & 2, Irino says around when Ritsu's powers are awakened in season 1. He found it interesting to watch how his heart becomes disturbed.
"He finally obtained the thing he'd been longing for, but everything around him that was once so calm gets thrown into disarray."
He also liked it when Ritsu stands atop the telephone pole in S1E7.
Speaking in terms of Power Rangers & character colour association, ever since he was a kid Irino has admired characters that are more blue or black rather than red.
Interviewer comments that Ritsu holds the ‘blue’ role in MP100.
After Mob & Ritsu reconcile, Irino states that he feels Ritsu has come to understand his brother more.
“How should I put it; Ritsu is overprotective, or there’s a side to him that’s too fussy over his big brother...” Irino; “but that kind of brotherly love is pleasant to see.”
“In Season 2, Ritsu and Shou go through a joint struggle.” Irino; “Shou’s father has tremendous powers, and he has one fear with that; he doesn’t know when his father will go on a rampage. Their circumstances are similar, in that sense.”
“Truth is, in parts MP100 is quite like your typical shounen manga.” Irino replies that there’s a bunch of great lines in the manga, and importance hidden within casual words.
Following this response he’s asked if there’s certain line(s) from MP100 that have stuck with him, to which Irino replies quite a few of Reigen’s. “During the last part of season 1 when he marches into Claw’s hideout, you get to hear a lot of his thoughts. It’s hard to tell if he’s being truthful with the things he says or if he’s lying, and on top of that he says quite a few important things. That unbalance is interesting.”
“The broadcast of season 2 has already come to an end...” Irino replies that he’d like the MP100 anime to continue and adapt the manga to the very end.
“I’m sure all the fans feel the same way.” Irino; “Everyone worked together as one to create the MP100 anime. For it to continue, we need your support; so please continue to give that to us.”
MATSUOKA YOSHITSUGU [Teru]
Asked his initial thoughts on MP100, Matsuoka says it was that it’s a piece that you can easily empathise with; regardless of if you’re in primary school, middle school, high school, an adult, an old man or woman...
Matsuoka thinks of the anime as something you watch and go, “I’ll try my best tomorrow, too.”
Matsuoka voices both Teru and Tokugawa in MP100. He was first offered the voice of Teru, and then it was decided he’d also voice Tokugawa.
It’s brought up that Tokugawa appears earlier in the show than Teru. “They’re two very different people, so in that sense performing both roles was easy. If they’d been similar characters I think there would be some confusion.”
Regarding Tokugawa, Matsuoka describes him as being quite firmly in the “student council” role with how strict and resolute his character is, in a way that Matsuoka himself very much isn’t.
Describes him as a cool-headed person, but given the way he interacts with Kamuro and is able to persuade him, says he has a hot-headed element to him as well. Matsuoka uses this as an example of how MP100 shows us the multifacetedness of human nature.
Regarding his other character, Teru; describes him as the personification of ‘chuunibyou’. “I think of him as the embodiment of the answer to the question, ‘if you had powers, what would you do?’”
One line he still remembers from S1 is Teru’s “Muscle training? Studying? That’s for ordinary people!” Matsuoka says that there’s a part of him that agreed with that line, and he says that if he were to get powers he’d likely be as conceited as Teru was.
States that Mob’s “From my perspective you’re just ordinary” line also stuck with him.
“From S1E5?” Matsuoka; “Yes - and then Teru replies, 'shut up!', and strangles Mob.” He says that he was really able to project his own emotions during this part and mix them with Teru’s own.
“People can’t change so easily” - Matsuoka says the things that Teru was saying to Mob, he was also saying to himself, like looking in a mirror. Uses this as an example of Teru’s own multifaceted nature.
Matsuoka says that the original Teru we see (who the interviewer describes as having a "poisonous nature" & putting on airs) is simply playing the role of what he considers to be an 'ideal' person, but then that comes away and we're left with the real Teru.
Interviewer makes a joke that Teru gets his personality trimmed along with his hair.
Is asked about Mob & Teru's rivalry, and says "No way, no way - there's no way they're /actually/ rivals." Says the power difference between Mob and Teru is way too big for that to actually be the case - "compared to Mob, Teru is ordinary."
Calls MP100 a work from which you realise "Everyone is a hero, and everyone is ordinary".
Asked on his opinion on MP100 season 2; says that there's more moments that get to you emotionally than season 1. Brings up S2E8 as an example (when Mob's house burns). "Say if that was actually Mob's family who burned in there... I think he'd destroy the world."
Asked about his favourite scenes from season 1 & 2, he says (as previously mentioned) the part where Mob says “From my perspective you’re just ordinary”. He also likes when Teru says to Onigawara, "it must be sad to be ordinary."
He likes the whole of S1E4, and calls Dimple a "famous-saying-production-machine".
Continuing on the topic of Dimple, interviewer says that Dimple is an ally, but teeters between good and evil. Matsuoka; “Setting aside his actions for a moment - the things that he says are essentially evil (laughs). He tries to tempt Mob and the other characters.”
He is asked if he has anything to say to fans of MP100. Matsuoka; “Season 2 is over, and now you’re holding this Character Guidebook in your hands. The fact that we’ve reached this point is thanks to the support of you all, the fans.” [...] “Season 2 brings an end to the grand fight between Shou and his father, but as those of you who’ve read the manga know, Mob Psycho 100 doesn’t end there. The giant broccoli is yet to come (laughs). I personally would like to do the whole of Broccoli Arc. As for when we can do that, I don’t know - I don’t even know if it’ll be possible to do it - but I’d like to believe that we’ll do it. I think that if you all believe in it too, then it’ll become reality.”
TACHIKAWA YUZURU [Director]
On being asked why he decided to work on MP100, Tachikawa; “Naturally, it was because of how charming the characters are.” There’s a lot of main characters who hold immense power, but Mob doesn’t want those powers, which is rare - this is why he finds Mob charming.
He compares and contrasts to Reigen - “[He] has no powers, but puts on a bold front and deceives people… well, that’s a misleading way to put it (laughs).” He thinks Mob and Reigen’s combo is amusing as a result.
He’s asked about MP100s character design, to which he describes Kameda drawing up a whole bunch of ideas. There’d be designs that were similar to ONE’s, and designs that made Mob a bit more handsome, “since at the time, if you looked at Mob Psycho 100 fan art on the internet, there were plenty of depictions of Mob being all sparkly and good-looking.”
“But looking at that, Kameda-kun and I decided we both wanted to go for something more akin to ONE-san’s art. When we showed ONE-san the rough sketches of the more handsome designs, he said ‘they’re attractive - I'm good with that’, but Kameda-kun and I replied ‘no, no - ONE-san, your art leaves more of an impression than this, so let’s go for something more like what you draw.’”
Tachikawa wanted to include the more ‘catchy’ kinds of stories in the anime. He brings up that Mob and Reigen dressing in women’s clothing and infiltrating the school happens in Volume 7 of the manga, but they decided to bring that to S1E2.
Asked about convos that happened with ONE regarding scenarios in the anime - Tachikawa mentions how in S1E11, there’s a segment where a younger Mob and Ritsu are lost in a forest. “I expressed to ONE-san that I’d like to witness why Mob respects Ritsu, to which he gave this idea.”
“In the manga, what Reigen did before he began S&S isn’t shown to us, but we get an implication of his past based on a line he says to do with businesses. I said the following to ONE-san; ‘An insurance salesman, or water marketing?’, to which ONE-san replied ‘water marketing.’”
Also mentions that Tsubomi coming to S&S in S2E8 wasn't something they adapted from the manga, but something ONE specifically created for the anime because Tachikawa expressed he wanted to see that kind of scenario, and then ONE added it as an omake to the manga. [TN: This is mentioned again here.]
He thinks he would have had the choice to handle both the screenplay and the series coordination but decided to ask Seko to handle Series Co-ordination instead.
He is in charge of the screenplay for S2E6-7 (Reigen arc). It was decided that Tachikawa would be in charge of storyboards for S2E7 before it was decided he’d handle the screenplay.
“Do you feel you have an emotional attachment to Reigen?” Tachikawa; “Yes, I do (laughs).” Calls him a character surrounded by mystery back in S1, and other than his courage and the occasional line that would resonate with Mob there’s a lot about him that’s unclear. “But with S2E6-7, we step into his uchizura (more private, “real” self). It’s interesting to see who a character appears to be on the outside, and their uchizura.”
Tachikawa finds stories in which someone falls to their lowest point and then recovers charming - thus, Tachikawa was charmed by S2E6-7 which depict Reigen’s fall and his subsequent recovery. Says that Ritsu and Teru also go through something similar (fall and recovery).
He loves when you can feel the humanity of characters. Says that when you show character development the charm of that character increases, and so does the popularity of the whole work. “I suppose it’s not just me who likes that, it’s all the fans, too”.
Makes a point of mentioning that all the characters have reached a turning point by the end of season 2, apart from Dimple.
Asked on his opinion of Mob, he says he relates to him and he was the type of kid in school to be in a position removed from everyone else. “He’s a character I really like, though I’m told by others that I’m ‘Reigen-ish’ (laughs).”
“I think there’s a few ways you could take ‘Reigen-ish’...” Tachikawa; “To put it another way, ‘shady’. Kameda-kun made that clear to me (laughs). As if I’m feigning friendliness.”
Tachikawa handled the rough layout of the illustration cover (Kameda finalised it). “It’s something I could imagine happening that wasn’t shown to us during S2E8. I thought to myself, it would be nice to show Dimple, Reigen and Ritsu working together for Mob’s sake. A theme of season 1 and 2 is Mob’s growth, so I thought the marathon episode would fit as a cover for this guidebook. As a result of his growth, he’s got people gathered around him…”
“I think Reigen would’ve run with them on the first day they trained together, but then he’d start using the bike instead. Since his muscles hurt (laughs).”
Asked to give a message to fans, he says that all the support from fans gave them a lot of energy throughout the production of seasons 1 & 2. Tells the fans to enjoy the OVA.
SEKO HIROSHI [Series Co-ordinator]
Asked on his thoughts of the MP100 manga, Seko; “it’s a work in which the characters are all charming. This is a misleading way to phrase it, but they’re a hopeless bunch; yet, the way ONE-san deals with them is very warm.”
“They’re not just characters, they’re much like us - nothing but human.”
Asked about how he wanted to deal with coordinating the series; “At the time of season 1 discussions, the most recent volume was around 9. I’d read up to that point and thought that if the anime is covering 12 episodes, then we should reach up to the fight with Claw’s seventh division in volume 6. My thought process from there was, ‘in what way can we make it so season 1 ends there?’, and with that I began.”
Asked if there was anything he fussed over, “making sure to not tar what makes the manga so charming. For example, when Mob reaches 100% for the first time in S1E3, that’s a highlight of the story, and I wanted to keep it that way.”
Reason for the movement of the high school infiltration from Vol 7 of the manga to S1E2 was to help build up to Mob’s 100% in S1E3.
The “student council” part of the manga spans S1E6-7 of the anime. The decision to condense it was due to the anime having only 12 episodes.
Reigen & Mob’s initial meeting being portrayed in S1 is brought up; “In a screenplay meeting with Tachikawa-san, we discussed depicting their initial meeting from Mob’s point of view, whereas in the manga it’s from Reigen’s. It comes up a little later in the manga but we thought it would be good to show their meeting in S1. And, if we ever got the chance to make a S2, we’d have the scene again much like it appears in the manga from Reigen’s perspective. So they wouldn’t be entirely the same scene.”
To being asked if there were any requests from ONE regarding the screenplay of the anime, Seko; “We had a discussion in which he said that while the final part of S1 has a serious atmosphere due to the fight, he didn’t want it to end that way. For that reason I proposed that we could end S1 with the tsuchinoko segment. I think ONE-san is uncomfortable when there’s nothing but seriousness.”
Seko says he had a feeling that they’d get a season 2. Much like season 1, he finished off season 2 in such that way as to give off the impression that there’s more to come.
“Did you struggle figuring out how to start S2E1?” Seko; “Regarding that, I’d already decided that if we were to make a S2 we’d start it off with Wriggle Wriggle.”
A deliberate choice was made to start off S2, and finish S2, with the broccoli (Mob receives the broccoli seeds at the start; broccoli becomes the giant broccoli at the end).
The interviewer describes an important part of S2 as being “hold your emotions dear to you”.
Seko; “Wriggle Wriggle is a pretty silly story, so I thought having a pleasant story after that would keep the balance. I think that balance between silly and serious is representative of what Mob Psycho 100 is.”
“Season 2 has one more episode than season 1, making it a total of 13 episodes. Could you tell us why?” Seko; “The original plan was 12 episodes. Had we kept to that, the scene in which Mob’s house burns would come at the end of part A of episode 8. But Warner Bros. producer Matsuda-san said, ‘I’d like that to come at the end of the episode.’ However, doing that would mean we’d have to give the battle with Claw that follows that a squeeze... so Matsuda-san said, ‘let’s go for 13 episodes then.’” [TN: This is mentioned again here.]
“Are there any scenes from S1 & S2 that you feel an emotional attachment to?” Seko says when Reigen is invincible in S1E12. “The scene in which he scolds the 7th division embodies what Mob Psycho 100 is all about.”
Says that in typical shounen manga the situation would be resolved with a fight but MP100 isn’t like that. “The things that Reigen says are completely justified, realistically. The things an evil organisation does are a crime; the clothes that they wear are weird... (Laughs)”
“Speaking of Reigen, a phrase of his that leaves an impression in S1E11 is, ‘When things get tough, it’s okay to run away!’” Seko; “In conventional shounen manga, there’s the belief that the protagonist shouldn’t run away, but with ‘it’s okay’, ONE-san’s personality shines through. Reigen is truly an intelligent person. The things he does are questionable, yet he has common sense that comes out at strange times.”
“You can’t sum up his character in a single word.” Seko; “I think he’s a respectable person, but he also cons people (laughs).” He enjoys the back and forth Reigen has with clients, and his stinginess and the way he edits ghost photos. “He’s both eloquent and skilled, which is unbearable (laughs). Despite that, he doesn’t rip people off with what he charges. You get the idea that he’s got some sense of ethics, which is calming.”
“He’s simply a difficult character to understand.” Seko; “Honestly, at first I couldn’t understand him at all. It was difficult to think of things that he might say when creating scenes that weren’t in the original manga. But when it became clear to me that he has morals, it all fell into place. I’ve forgotten when exactly this happened - it was at some point near the start or middle of season 1 - but I came to understand the kind of person Reigen is.”
Speaking about Mob, “He’s introverted, quiet and bad at socialising, but he has this immense power inside him... when you hear that, some other works will probably spring to mind, but when you read MP100 you realise this is different. Mob is Mob[.]”
“It’s interesting to see a character as powerful as he is work very hard at training his muscles.” Seko; “And his incentive for that is that he wants to be popular (laughs).”
Seko was in charge of the next episode previews (which Reigen would announce in a meta-ish way). He says that he ran out of ideas of what to end them with by season 2 so they start repeating a little.
Asked to give a message to fans, he says thank you for watching S2 and look forward to the OVA.
KAMEDA YOSHIMICHI [Character Designer]
Asked his thoughts on the MP100 manga, Kameda says he didn’t have much of a clue what direction the story would take upon finishing the second volume. “After Claw gets introduced the story takes on an action-like atmosphere so I thought it would carry on that way, but then the story starts digging deep into uchizuras. I was surprised at that. That’s a true-to-life middle school boy being depicted.”
Kameda says that he took on working on the MP100 anime after reaching the part of mob psycho that explores uchizuras. “The way I felt was, ‘I want us to make a season 2, so we can definitely animate this part. I’m doing season 1 for this purpose.’ (Laughs)”
“What were your first thoughts with the character design?” Kameda; “In the manga there aren’t really any illustrations that are coloured. Even the front covers of the volumes aren’t too expressive with how they use colour. The way lines are drawn is dependent on colour, so the first decision to be made was on that subject, while checking my choices with ONE-san. In the manga, Reigen’s tie is black. But in the anime Mob is painted all black, so I thought it’d be a bit too heavy to leave his tie that way. Reigen was the only one with a coloured illustration in which his hair is painted yellow, so based on that I tried creating a whole bunch of tie patterns - purple, green, blue, pink, etc. ONE-san wanted to go for a blue tie, but I thought that was too salary man-ish, and didn’t give off fraud vibes. The final decision was made based on a colour necktie that the average person wouldn’t buy - it would be pink, wouldn’t it.”
Asked if there was anything difficult after colours, he describes having difficulty trying to figure out how to convert ONE’s style to the screen. “It would’ve been interesting to leave his art as it was for the anime, but it seemed like it would’ve been very difficult to do so.”
Describes ONE’s talent as being the way he applies shadow, calling it very real.
Interviewer follows on this by asking anything else that marks ONE’s art as ONE’s, to which Kameda replies the shape of ears, and describes his struggle trying to replicate the way ONE draws them.
Kameda would correct the ears drawn by the other animators to try and match ONE’s style. Leading on from this the interviewer mentions hearing that Kameda would touch up any cuts that caught his eye. Kameda; “Around 10 cuts an episode.”
Calls Mezato a favourite character of his, to the extent that he volunteered to do the part that she appears in S2E13 (and did so).
Says that S1E5 was the only episode in S1 he didn’t touch, which Fujisawa Kenichi was animation director of. “The character design in that episode is a little different but I thought that episode would be better off with Fujisawa-san’s style.”
Kameda proposed the scene that happens at the start of S1S1 (Mob fighting the “evil apparitions”) by saying he wanted a depiction of a middle school boy fighting with his powers as our start, but he actually proposed it in anticipation of the kind of action we’d see in S2E5. [TN: I think it’s been a rumour for a while that the start scene is from Mogami arc and this sorta confirms that the line of thought there is correct]
The first episode in S2 that they started drawing production work for was S2E5.
When Kameda watched S2E5 what he was most surprised by was Part A of the episode (ie. Mob’s day to day life), rather than the action scenes. “The layout is good, as are the use of bugs as an expression device[.]”
Kameda speaks of S2E7 as a part of Mob Psycho 100 so important to him that if it didn’t exist he wouldn’t have chosen to work on MP100.
He fussed over the press conference and Reigen’s expression(s) when he talks to Mob by the river at the end of the episode.
Interviewer mentions that we don’t see Reigen’s face in the manga when Mob calls him a good person, so seeing it in the anime leaves an impression. Kameda; “we struggled with that cut, but we struggled with Reigen’s expression when he’s walking alongside the river more so. Originally his expression was hidden as he approached, but when the camera pulled in close you could see his face.”
We end up seeing his face the whole way through. Kameda calls Aoyama Hiroyuki (who animated the whole end segment) a “super(hero) animator”.
Kameda makes an edit to Reigen’s expression upon being told by Mob that he’s a good person, with respect to the expression Reigen pulls in the final volume, “when [he] lays bare his real emotions to Mob.” [TN: This appears to be implying Reigen was originally drawn with tears in his eyes that were removed to make sure that the scene in which Reigen finally cries maintains its impact.]
“The performance by Reigen’s VA, Sakurai-san, was amazing... and I loved Mob’s ‘By the way, Shishou. Happy birthday.’ Itou-kun’s way of speaking is so gentle... I can’t quite express the feeling properly, but hearing him say those words, I was brought close to tears.”
Kameda is asked if there’s anything that proved a lot of work, to which he says, “Hmm... there’s a lot of characters in MP100, aren’t there. (Laughs)”.
Describes that he designed ~90 characters for S1. “I thought I’d get to relax a little for S2, but in the end I ended up having to design around 90 more. (Laughs)”
“Some of the main character designs that were established in S1 changed a little for S2, didn’t they.” Kameda; “Ritsu changed a little with S2. In S1 he had a bit of antagonism toward Mob, so I had the hair that frames his face be a little longer to try and hide those emotions.”
“A character’s state of mind is something that can be expressed through their hair.” Says that Ritsu’s hair gets a refresh in the final part of S1 when he’s talking to Kamuro in the park, to represent that the “demon plaguing him is gone”.
He’s asked if there are any characters in the huge cast of MP100 that are memorable for him. He mentions Tarou and Hanako as two characters that were fun to draw as they set the trend for the other “guest characters” in the show.
Also says he likes Mitsuura as a character with high energy who was fun to pose, though he’s unpopular with the animators due to the patterns on his clothes being a pain.
“I’ve mentioned this here and there before, but I really love Shinra Banshoumaru. The reason why I was the animation director for S2E2 is because it’s his entry episode (laughs).”
“Why did you want to draw Shinra Banshoumaru so much?” Kameda; “Because he’s chubby!! The swell of his cheeks, his tummy, his large butt... I’m obsessed (laughs). I was so charmed, thinking, ‘I want to make him even bigger and move him around!’”
He’d do things like add extra belly sways to the storyboards. “I didn’t intend to go as far as I did, but I think I went overboard in a lot of ways (laughs).”
Asked to give a message to fans, Kameda; “I’m happy that you all continue to involve yourselves with Mob Psycho 100. Since we’ve come this far, I want to finish off animating what remains of the MP100 manga. A television season 3 - no, wait, perhaps even a film...? Please be sure to continue to support Mob Psycho 100.”

He is asked how Mob Psycho 100 came to be. ONE; “I love psychic powers as a theme, so I thought to myself, in what way can I make the most of that theme? How can I add colour to it? Through that thought process, I incorporated puberty, stress, ‘being used’, complexes, unrequited love, ‘shishou’, lies, the dual nature that exists in many things, and so on… then, the protagonist; a passive, introverted person, but someone who is able to become the eye of a hurricane, someone who through the influence of their relationships changes, grows… it was with that foundation that I began developing the plot, and through that process I solidified the setting; this protagonist would have their heart burdened by a buildup of stress and the shift of their feelings, and after passing a certain boundary they’d explode, and their powers would run wild… I thought it would be nice if the manga was a little strange, with the buildup until the boundary crossover being shown to the reader via a numerical percentage value. Ideas for titles included things like, ‘Mob Psycho’, ‘Psycho Helmet’, and ‘Mob Psycho 100%’.”
He is asked to recall how he felt when the MP100 anime was confirmed. ONE; “I was delighted. A lot has happened in relation to Mob Psycho 100, but for me the anime has been the thing to make me the most happy.”
He is asked what he hoped for with the anime, to which he replies the happiness of the fans, and for MP100 to bring a smile to the faces of the staff working on the anime.
What he looked forward to was the way the voice actors and animators would approach the characters, and how they’d flesh out the MP100 world as a result.
“What kinds of conversations did you have with director Tachikawa?” ONE says he doesn’t really remember their initial conversation(s) but he knows that he told Tachikawa that he has the freedom to be as creative as he wants. “I didn’t want to be a nuisance.”
He recalls being told by series coordinator Seko that he may need to shift around a few of the chapters to make the story in the anime flow a little easier.
Asked his thoughts on Kameda’s character designs, ONE; “Amazing. I’d resigned myself to the fact that the characters would get an overhaul for the anime and become more handsome, but Mob has remained Mob, Reigen has remained Reigen. Their anime designs are charming. I was moved.”
He says he holds several pages of character designs drafts that Kameda drew up dear to him, and mentions that the Body Improvement Clubs designs were perfect from the get go.
ONE says that he feels blessed with the amazing voice actors giving depth to the characters, describing how when they’re given voices it feels like they’re alive, and regrets that he didn’t go to recording sessions more.
“How did you feel when season 2 was announced?” ONE: “Season 1 was amazing, so I expected there’d be a season 2.” Describes Tachikawa and Kameda’s hard work, to which he responded with his own. “It was around the time that I was ending the manga, so I buckled down to finish it.”
He looked forward to seeing how the anime would deal with adapting the more “drama” feel of season 2, with human emotions being explored.
He describes his process with writing problems and their solutions in MP100. “Mob & Reigen each have their own way of dealing with a problem, so I’d say, ‘this is how this problem would generally be dealt with’, and from there I’d explore different ways of solving that problem.”
“I let the characters start thinking for themselves - that kind of delusion awoke within me. Like, ‘Hey, Reigen, I’m going to sleep, so think it over for me.’ With that, it became easier to plan.”
He is asked his thoughts and feelings on the anime; he states he doesn’t really watch anime but was reminded of how interesting it can be, and the power of anime as simple entertainment. “I was able to recognise anew just how amazing the production team is. [...] I felt so grateful that they chose to work on Mob Psycho 100, devoting their precious time to really putting their all into the production work. It’s how I’ve felt with every episode. Right now I’ve watched up until the end of S2E5, but I’m already running out of tissues.”
He is asked anything that’s left an impression on him during the broadcast of MP100; “The amount of correspondence I’d receive from overseas Mob Psycho fans increased with the anime broadcast.” Says that it’s amazing that even with a translation foreign fans are able to laugh at the same things, be moved by the same things, etc.
Finally, he is asked to give a message to the fans who purchased the guidebook. ONE; “Thank you for always supporting Mob Psycho 100. The way I see the situation regarding Mob Psycho 100 as a work is as something that overlaps with Mob’s own development. Mob Psycho’s value as a piece of entertainment greatly increased with the powerful aid of the anime, and with everyone who offered a hand, gave their opinions and support, and reached out. I’d always thought to myself, ‘I want to create a manga that’s able to influence those who read it in some way, if only even a little,’ but as it turns out it’s Mob Psycho 100 that has become what it is now thanks to all of you. I’ve still got my eye on what Mob Psycho 100 will become in the future. Nothing would make me more happy than for all of you to continue enjoying Mob Psycho 100.“
