psst... how on earth do you come up with fic titles????

tbh i also want to know how to come up with fic titles😓

I honestly couldn’t decide whether or not this was actually asking my advice since I feel like my titles are kind of weak and they are also the absolute last thing i add when publishing my fics since i never want to come up with one but if it IS a genuine request the way i do it is usually by going one of three routes (using examples from my own fics):

1) Descriptive - if you can condense the plot down into a few words do it essentially. It’s like taking the summary and making it even smaller kind of.

Example: one of my naruto fics is called ‘Joke-Married’ because it’s literally just about them getting married as a joke, i like this method cause it’s easy, simple, and i know the title makes sense and isn’t too funky

2) Direct Quote - love this method why come up with a title when you already came up with so many words in the actual fic? Pretty much you just pick out a short and significant line (preferably one that doesn’t spoil an important moment or anything) that highlights a theme or important plot point.

Examples: My ace attorney fic ‘it looks cool’ makes sense since its title is a recurring and significant line in the story. Conversely, my bsd fic ‘When was the last time you slept?’ only has that line in it once but it’s already clueing the reader into the plot - a character is tired and gets some sleep🤷‍♀️ again it ensures the title is relevant and can also work as a hook, I also suck at descriptions and use directly quoted sections for those a lot too

3) The Vibes™️ - idk how to explain this it’s kind of just picking out a saying or phrase that matches the fic’s vibes, it runs a bit of a risk of the title becoming a bit irrelevant though so I don’t use it often, usually just when I wanna be a little artsy or dramatic

Example: my bsd fic ‘slowly but surely’ is probably the best example from my fics, it’s a common phrase and although it isn’t used in the fic it fits because that ones like a falling in love over time kinda deal idk how else to say it but that it matched The Vibes™️ to me
