Are Influencers Bad? How to Achieve Happiness?
Are Influencers Bad? How to Achieve Happiness?
By Angelina Rachie
Like most 20-somethings, I am diagnosed with depression. I have been put on three different medications, two of which did nothing, one of which I am currently taking but, Iâm pretty sure, does nothing. This depression has wholly interrupted my life and left me unable to work or go to school for a while. Since I need money to live, work is the thing that I decided is most important to me right now. Of course, school is something that I want to continue, but now, this seems almost impossible to tackle while staying in a healthy headspace. I donât want to sound like someoneâs grandpa and blame modern things for my depression but rather our cultureâanother very grandpa thing for me to blame. Sometimes you just have to listen to grandpaâs stories to make him happy, so just think of this piece as that and nothing more. Iâm not saying that the chemicals in my brain have nothing to do with how I feel; instead, things within our culture could be contributing to your depression without you even realizing itâspooky, subliminal messaging, like sex in Disney movies.Â
Imagine this, capitalism. Who doesnât love retail therapy? Your brain. I find myself, without a job, scraping pennies, relying on the kindness and charity of others, unable to buy things that I convince myself will make me happy. I find most people have a shopping addiction. And you might be asking yourself, why is that relevant to our culture now? Stores have always existed, you stupid idiot girl. What are influencers, if not salespeople? If you havenât seen an influencer making a video about lists of things you just need to buy or large hauls from expensive luxury stores, you must be living under a rock. Yes, the gays will hate this; thrifting counts as shopping. Yes, it may (technically) be more sustainable, but overconsumption is overconsumption. This culture of fast fashion, cheap clothing, and fast online shopping with free shipping has ramifications for your wallet and your mind.
Just like celebrities like Judy Garland chain smoking and, I donât know, fucking, Homer Simpson being a high-functioning alcoholic, influencers glamorize an addiction. Now, this might sound really dramatic, of course, and it isâ„. The addiction they glamorize is shopping and overconsumption. Like, no, you really donât need a $40 water bottle; you are not the queen of England or an heiress. But do I feel as though I absolutely need that water bottle, and if I had to choose between $40 or groceries and that water bottle, would I choose the water bottle? How dare you even ask? Of course. I am a sheep, an addict. I have a problem. One I share with many. Of course I am not a hater of content creators, vloggers, and the like. I grew up with them, practically raised by them. But if they raised me, I definitely have mommy issues because now I am an addict. This addiction may not seem so severe, and you may think me mad (nerd, virgin, loser phrase, please delete), but it seriously affects me mentally and physically. I am easily seriously (to my detriment) influenced, of course but I donât have the funds to be. As I know, most young people donât. So what do we do, use things like credit and affirm, etc. Something that can seriously affect a good chunk of your life. What?? Yes, dingbat, listen. Now I hate when people tell me things that I already know, but I didnât know this, websites like affirm to affect your credit score, eventually. So if you find yourself out of work without the means of paying these debts, then, how the fuck are you supposed to pay them? HUH. You donât , you know what that means to your credit score, straight up whiskey dicks it. (Or straight down??? I donât know, Iâm a lesbian. Itâs been a while). You might say, why would I suddenly be out of a job? Well, maybe youâre too depressed to go. Full circle. But, let me tell you in big bold letters: A STANLEY CUP OR DRUNK ELEPHANT TANNING DROPS WONâT MAKE YOU HAPPIER. At least not a lasting happiness, just like crack and the like. Yes, Iâve never done crack, but I do spend my whole paycheck on my addiction.Â
Of course, I donât care about these influencers, make your money. Iâm all for women being in complete control of their occupation and means of making money. Down with men, all that. (There are male influencers, but I am speaking about a field dominated by women so I will exclude them for now, I think theyâll live). I think that women can do no wrong, and nothing is ever their fault. I will continue to blame men, not individually of course but, one man in particular. Scottish political economist, Adam Smith. The baby daddy of capitalism. These women are merely capitalizing off of a preconstructed system, created by a man. As per usual, I refuse to blame these girl bosses, in the true sense of the word, for sculpting a system that was put in place to help men gain power and wealth into something that works in their favor. Go influencers, boo capitalism.Â
OH NO COMMUNIST. Bitch, whatever. I can critique a system put in place by a fucking dead person. Maybe youâre just a fascist blindly accepting the conditions and expectations of a country that you were taught to love through propaganda. Also, are you stupid? Iâm just a 21-year-old vapid girl, why are you taking such offense to my opinions and the things I say, obsessed much? Weirdo. I digress.Â
Women are the scapegoat of society. Oh no, Influencer bad. No, letâs think through this critically. Overconsumption is the result of capitalism. A society built around the concept of making money instead of creating happy, productive, beautiful and enriched lives. Not technically, this is of course, an exaggeration. This isnât Harvard people, itâs me. Â
Letâs get biblical (biblical, I wanna get⊠you know? GenX moment sorry), not for spiritual sake but merely for a different perspective. Jesus (of Nazareth, you know sandals, long luscious extensions) himself said (and Iâm paraphrasing from Mathew 19:24) it is very hard for a rich man to get into heaven. So when did society become obsessed with the idea of wealth, enough for entire societies to be built around the idea of being able to make a bunch? Consider that Jesus told the first rich man: âSell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.â The man turned away sadly, âfor he was very rich.â Sorry to bring the bible up, but let me bring up some other philosophers.
Epicurus, (greek dude, marble, white, but I guess at one point had obnoxious ugly paint on him??) Rather than accumulating wealth, one should try and live a simple life and find joy in things like friends, the pleasures of work, and philosophy. Now Nietzsche (the nihilist), claims that the writers of the bible simply didnât like money because they didnât have it. Rather, they thought that being poor was better simply because they themselves were poor. Which??? Obviously, from the perspective of another poor person. Yes, Iâd rather be rich in the society presented to me, but this perspective seems too simple to me but go off. So cut and dry. Very Nietzche. Soren Kierkegaard, (Pretty hot 8/10, look up a pic, kinda looks like a girl but Iâm a lesbian, so figures) that existential bitch, âIn the end, therefore, money will be the one thing people will desire, which is moreover only representative, an abstractionâ. Thatâs so Lana Del Rey vinyl of him. Basically, he thinks that money causes people to be detached and conformists. Subjective to whether or not you want to be either of those things, conformists can slay. Schopenhauer advises to steer clear of money entirely. Money is the anthem of infinite desire, labor and distress. Having a true Rupi Kaar moment by saying, âââWealth is like sea-water: The more we drink the thirstier we become; and the same is true of fame.â
Okay, blah blah blah, old men and shit. HOW DO I BECOME HAPPY? HOW CAN I BE A HAPPY PERSON, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!?!Â
Okay, damn. Take a deep breath. Letâs ask science? I donât know? Weâre desperate right? Science suggests that living according to our values, and fulfilling all of our basic needs. Of course this would explain why Iâm unhappy since I continually chase money and obviously have such low regard for people who do so. Whoopsâ„. Dopamine and a crowd favorite, serotonin, are our feel-good hormones which, basically to dumb it down because I am a (bottle) blonde after all, are released when we get consistent sleep, balanced meals and regular exercise. Things that keep us alive and well. Not surprised that our brain wants us to feel good when we do those things, evolution and all.Â
The best thing to remember when youâre depressed is you can always write a 7-page essay on how youâre not happy. To make you feel better (????).Â
In Conclusion, influencers are just products of a society built on the notion that the thing that measures success is moneyânot placing importance on happiness, resulting in a bunch of depressed people. How do we become happy then? Reject money entirely?????!! I donât know. No, not possible. Maybe, instead of being easily tricked into going shopping or, a new purse will make you feel better, create something, talk with a loved one. Or, buy the purse. Because itâs adorable and your favorite influencer told you to.Â

Sins of the Father
Shego meets with her father. Heavy angst.
Warnings: Child abuse and forced eating disorders, some gore.
The phone at the robotics workstation rang, startling Drakken, causing him to solder through the motherboard.
He groaned loudly. He had been working on that motherboard for days!
âWhat?â He snapped, answering the phone.
âStephanie?â The voice on the other line questioned.
Drakken leaned back in his seat, âListen, pal if you think I sound like a Stephanie we both have issues.â
âIs Stephanie Gordon there?â
Drakkenâs eyes narrowed, âHowâd you get this number?â
âIs she there?â The voice asked, getting tired of Drakkenâs perceived runaround.
âNo, sheâs not.â Drakken was getting suspicious and it sounded in his voice. GJ had sent her on a short mission for the day.
The man on the other end sighed, âJust- just tell her to call me. My number is still the same. Iâm her father.â The call abruptly disconnected.
Drakken sat back up in his chair and thought. Shego and her father Sam had been estranged for longer than Drakken had known her. She had divulged little tidbits of his parenting which were less than stellar at best and abusive at worst.
Through the GJ computers, Drakken could run a full background check on this guy. He didnât trust him. What did he want all of a sudden? Drakken knew criminals (the irony was not lost on him) and as much as Drakken hoped he wasnât, Gordon could be up to something. If he so much as sneezed near a traffic camera, GJ would show it.
Samuel James Gordon, divorced from Shegoâs and her brotherâs mother for several years, a failed MMA fighter, terrible credit score, lives in the not so good part of town, unemployed but has self-published a book on Team Go. No criminal history and no weapons registered to him. This guy was a Loser with a capital L who lived vicariously through his kids, mostly Shego. Drakken was satisfied that Gordon probably wasnât up to anything. It was up to Shego if she wanted to speak to him.
Midevening rolled around, and the lab began to shut down for the night. Techs and assistants turned off their computers and all unnecessary equipment shut down. Paul was fed and put in her kennel for the night. Overnight security began to show up. Drakken never noticed the lively hum the running lab emitted until it was gone.
Shego walked in with a few other GJ agents who had friends or partners that worked for him, the burning sun shining behind her. In her catsuit and flowing raven hair, laughing with one of her colleagues, she looked absolutely beautiful. And powerful. Stars, what did she see him?
âHey loser,â She greeted, walking up to his workstation. âLoserâ had somehow become a term of endearment from her to him long ago. âWhat do you want for dinner? Heath gave me more Bueno Nacho gift cards for my birthday and it sounds kinda good right now. That sound good to you? I donât feel like cooking.â
Drakken was a million miles away. He had no idea how he was going to tell her that her father was asking for her. He would never keep anything from her, but he also wanted to protect her from any emotional trauma Gordonâs presence brought about. Once again, Drakken reminded himself that it was up to her to decide what to do.
âYeah, sounds good.â Drakken answered.
âSweet,â Shego replied, going off to change.
As much as Drakken was annoyed with GJâs restrictions, the little amenities assuaged him, like a laundry and tailor service. Apparently, his lab gear and her suit needed to be laundered a certain way? It took him a very long time to figure out that leather cannot survive the rinse and dry cycle. Shego had only been at his side for a week when she commented that he looked like he was mottling. The leather of his lab coat was dry and cracked. Once he thought about it yeah, it made sense, he dealt with biohazardous and/or corrosive materials on a daily basis, things he really didnât want to bring home on his clothing. Every morning in his office, he was greeted by a fresh lab coat hanging up and his lab boots expertly shined. Shegoâs own suits were cleaned as well.
Shego emerged in a black tank top, her hair pulled back and comfy shorts, her purse slung over her shoulder. Soon, they headed home.
Shego had her long legs kicked up on the dashboard, soaking up the dying sun, her sunglasses on and her shoes off as she scrolled through her phone. Drakken saw the opportunity.
âGet any weird calls lately?â He asked, swallowing hard.
âNo,â Shego replied casually, âOur provider is pretty good at filtering out spam and robocalls.â
âReally?â Drakken paused, âI did.â
âOh yeah?â Shego said, still looking at her phone, âWhat was it?â
âUh, it was your dad, looking for you.â
Shego froze. âWhat?â
âI didnât give him your number. He said he wants to talk. His number is still the same.â
Shego sighed, âIâm not talking to him.â
âYou donât have to,â Drakken replied.
There was a tense silence.
âWhat does he even want?â
âI dunno.â Drakken shrugged, âHe didnât say.â
Shego threw her head back against the seat and pouted, âWould I be a bad daughter if I ignored him?â
âI donât think Iâm the greatest moral compass, Stef, but from everything you told me, you donât own him anything.â
Shegoâs head rolled to look out the window. She groaned. âI guess Iâll talk to him. It might be important.â
~*~
Shego drug her feet on contacting her father, but Drakken didnât push her. She had been tense and quiet and snappy the entire week. Late Thursday afternoon, she made the call and arranged to meet with him that Saturday at a cafĂ©. Shego didnât linger on the line for conversation. A cafĂ©, public but non-committal, you werenât stuck there through the appetizer and entre round if things went south.
Drakken parked in front of the café. Shego sighed and grabbed her purse from the floorboards.
âWant me to go in with you?â He asked, hoping to offer support.
âNo. Keep the car running.â She said, pushing her sunglasses to her head.
Drakken hoped this went well, for her sake.
Shego went in and ordered a black coffee and sat down. Shego took a seat and from where she sat, Drakken could see her and her table fine, minus a glare. She just wanted Drew there without actually being there.
They both sat for a few moments when a scrawny but still somehow paunchy man with salt and pepper hair passed by the car and walked inside. That could not have been Shegoâs father. She must have gotten her looks from her mother. Geez, even Drakken himself could beat this guy up. Drakken dropped down, not wanting to be seen, fearing that he could be seen even through the carâs tinted windows.
Drakkenâs phone rang and it was Shego. Confused, he answered, âHello?â
âStephanie, look you great.â He heard Gordon say. The man made a move to hug her, but Shego didnât make a move to reciprocate. Drakken felt second-hand embarrassment for the guy, watching the hug slowly die. Shego wanted Drakken to hear their conversation as she placed her phone to the side.
âHow long has it been?â Gordon asked, sitting down.
Shego shrugged, saying nothing.
Her father looked around, nervously drumming on his thighs. âI heard you got married. Eloped. Iâm not surprised. Not crazy about you not telling meâŠâ
Shego cut him off, âWhat do you want?â
He looked flabbergasted. âYouâre my daughterâŠâ
âNo, I was your pet project. You didnât pay any attention to me until I nearly died in that treehouse and came out with powers. Then, you made me into what you wanted, what you couldnât be. The boys,â Shego shook her head, âthey were extra, bonuses, just along for the ride. Hell, you even told me I was radioactive, some Radium Girl, to keep me under your thumb.â
Shegoâs black painted nails drummed on the side of her coffee mug, âGod, how much did I miss because of you? All kinds of parties, birthdays, dances. Mom had to convince you to let me do anything, even to go to Prom. You said everything was a distraction.â She said, carefully, drawing out this manâs torture. This meeting was not going as well as he hoped and it showed on his face.
âI just wanted what was best for you. You had, have so much potential. I thought that that was what you wantedâŠâ
âDid you ask?â Shego exclaimed, her eyes wide, âHow many calories was I allowed to have? A couple a hundred? A healthy teenage girl needs 2,200 calories a day and I sure as hell wasnât getting that. Remember that earthquake in Tokyo you pulled us out of school for, so we could do search and rescue?â
Shego paused and when she spoke again, her voice was strained with emotion, âIâll never forget the smell of leaking gasoline, a little girlâs cries for help from under the rubble of her school, her hand sticking through the debris, clawing for help. I told her it would be alright, I donât know if she understood me, I just learned a few Japanese phrases on the flight over, I took her hand and it wasnât connected to her anymore. I held her bloody, dismembered hand, Dad.â She said through gritted teeth, tears streaming down her face, shaking her own hand. âI was sixteen. I still remember.â
âI donât know what to sayâŠâ
âThereâs nothing you can say,â Shego replied. Her fingers started to twitch and constrict, subconsciously, she wanted to lash out, to light the cafĂ© up with green plasma. âThere are just some things you canât undo.â
They sat for a moment in silence before Shego grabbed her purse, âDonât contact me. Ever again.â
She hurried out of the café and back into the SUV with her husband.
Drakken knew better to say anything to Shego as she got in. She needed her space and he would be there for her when she was ready. He looked at Gordon through the windshield and the cafĂ©âs window and he was looking back. Gordon couldnât see Drakken through the tinted windows but knew it was him behind the wheel. Drakken held the manâs eyes before putting the SUV in reverse and pulling away. Shego pulled her sunglasses back down over her eyes, tears on her cheeks reflecting in the afternoon sun, and remained silent the entire way home. Drakken did what he could to keep her comfortable, making sure the temperate in the vehicle was good, that it wasnât blowing on her too much, that the radio volume wasnât too loud. He wouldnât press her to talk.
When they returned home, Shego went upstairs. Drakken gave her some time to herself before he went up to check on her.
She could never accept his apology if he offered one. There was a finality she felt. The last time she saw him was when her Mom asked for a divorce when Shego was nineteen and he left with only an old suitcase. She hoped heâd just turn to dust and leave her be. Now, it was like he finally was dead. She sobbed and beat the bed with clenched fists, mourning for her father and what she never had. Drakken merely held Shego as she painfully mourned her father.

"What's Up You Guys It's Me, Bdenbrough!" -Â personal vlog CUTTING MY HAIR OFF
Summary:Â Bill cuts his hair off finally after some time of feeling uncomfortable about it. Beverly helps him fix it up in the end.
Chapter 1 2 3 4 5Â + ao3
Taglist: @hazelash @fuckboykaspbrak @thesquidliesthuman @rachi0964 @beepbeep-losers @bigbilliamdenbro @jalenrose11 @sleepygaybrough @itandstrangerthingsfanfic @boopboopbichie @peachywyatt @aizeninlefox @sockwantstodie @ahoybyeler @yooonbum @coffeekaspbrak
The art video turns out to be a big hit with his viewers, and he decides to keep up with that video style. He pumps out a few more draw with me videos, then jumps onto the Inktober bandwagon later than he wishes he did, but he did due to popular demand, and the drawings do well in his videos and even on his instagram.
He keeps up with his drawing better than with the challenges. He can slowly get better at art, but challenges werenât getting him anywhere. Now he gets to even improve and gain followers by sharing his own ideas and talent. His hands get less shaky as he goes, and now heâs learned the fact that if he gets popular enough he could gain money from it. Heâd love for that, he could get copics, or even a drawing tablet.
Even better, by November he has the best idea he possibly could. His video wonât necessarily be an art video, but it is one that excites him to share. He sets up the camera in his bathroom, leaned against the mirror next to the sink. He clicks the button to start the recording, letting out a deep sigh to try and calm his racing heart.
Heâs in basically pajamas, just a t-shirt and some sweatpants, itâs a Friday night and he just wants to do this impulsively. He has a pair of craft scissors in his hand, posing ironically with them before he properly starts filming, he needs a thumbnail of course. âWhat up y-you guys itâs m-me, bdenbrough, and todayâs video is o-one Iâve been p-p-putting off for a long time,â he says truthfully, holding up the scissors before he starts explaining.
âI have a r-really complicated relationship w-with my hair. Itâs long and a-annoying and I donât th-think it looks nice on me. So f-for todayâs video, Iâm going to be cutting it off. M-myself. It wonât l-look good but! M-maybe Beverly c-can help me save it!â he says with a slight chuckle.
He takes the scissors and pulls out a lock of hair from his shoulder, snipping it ceremoniously at a random place to get himself started, giggling in excitement and feeling empowered with the first cut. Soon itâll be gone, soon heâll feel more like himself.
He snips away quietly, the crunch of the scissors going through his thick hair is the only sound in the bathroom except when the heat comes on for about ten minutes. He goes about this slowly. Something to remember, itâs important for him and he wants this moment to last. When he edits heâll have to speed it up and put some fun and upbeat music in the background, but for now this it time with himself.
He gets it all up to his shoulders, then to his earlobes, and now he wants to be more careful so it actually looks good. He decides it would just be best to ask Bev to come over, she can sneak out without her parents noticing quite well by now. He pauses his filming to call her over, she doesnât mind, sheâs just a little shocked.
She arrives and he starts the camera again before he even lets her see his hair, making her stand outside his bathroom and knock so he can get a good take of surprising his friend. She gasps quietly and runs her hand through a longer strand by his ear. âShort hair suits you,â she says finally in a small voice. His heart canât help but swell with joy.
âNow let me help you clean this up, alright?â she asks, waiting for his hesitant nod, looking him in the eye where she sees tears lying at his lower lashline like a sea below the sea of his blue eyes. Heâs never looked so elated, Beverly canât help but smile herself.
She snips at an upward patter to try and make it look natural, like a haircut done professionally. âKids at school might say stuff, letting you know,â she says just as softly as sheâs been, running her hands through Billâs now short hair to get the trimmed pieces of his head, letting them flutter down to the floor with the rest of it.
âI know. I j-just was really getting t-tired of it long,â he sighs, smiling awkwardly, his lips spread wide apart to try and hold his innocence in the conversation. He looks to the camera again, trying to be mindful of the fact that heâll have to edit this all to make sense later. Now he thinks he may put in some more emotional music in the sped up parts, he might take Bevâs statements to make it better. Not to capitalize on this, but it would be something heâs more proud of in the end.
âIâm getting tired of mine too. What do you say I trim some of mine off too?â she asks as she finishes making the hair on his head look more presentable. Bill gives a happy nod, he surely doesnât mind her snipping some off in solidarity. Maybe he wonât be alone in the teasing about his hair being all chopped off if she has new hair too.
Bev takes the scissors and looks in the mirror, leaning over the counter to get closer to it to be sure she can see her hair properly. She goes slowly. Sheâs also been needing a trim, sheâs glad for the opportunity to do it with her close friend. She only chops up to her shoulders, but that is a big change for her regardless due to how long it was previously.
âHow do I look?â she asks as she finishes about half of her head, still trying to add layered ends as she talks, only looking over at Bill through his reflection in the mirror. He smiles, his grin full of a sparkling enthusiasm.
âYou l-look beautiful B-Bev,â he smiles, his voice quiet but just loud enough for the camera to pick up. He may have to edit that out, he doesnât want all of his followers to be able to deduce hi crush on her, he doesnât need that teasing.
They finish up their hair, taking some nice selfies together for the thumbnail and a few for each of their instagrams. He sits down to edit it, looking at himself. He hasnât filmed his body in a while, it makes him uncomfortable, from that moment on, he decides heâll wear sports bras. He misses the way his chest looked before these things decided to grow on him.

âThere are two types of people who will tell you that you cannot make a difference in this world: those who are afraid to try and those who are afraid you will succeed. â Ray Goforthâ
âWould you like me to give you a formula for success? Itâs quite simple, really: Double your rate of failure. You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isnât at all. You can be discouraged by failure or you can learn from it, so go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because remember thatâs where you will find success. â Thomas J. Watsonâ
âPeople who succeed have momentum. The more they succeed, the more they want to succeed, and the more they find a way to succeed. Similarly, when someone is failing, the tendency is to get on a downward spiral that can even become a self-fulfilling prophecy. â Tony Robbinsâ
âSuccessful people do what unsuccessful people are not willing to do. Donât wish it were easier; wish you were better. â Jim Rohnâ
âI owe my success to having listened respectfully to the very best advice, and then going away and doing the exact opposite. â G. K. Chestertonâ
âThe real test is not whether you avoid this failure, because you wonât. Itâs whether you let it harden or shame you into inaction, or whether you learn from it; whether you choose to persevere. â Barack Obamaâ
âCharacter cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved. â Helen Kellerâ
âThere are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure. â Colin Powellâ
âSuccess seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they donât quit. â Conrad Hiltonâ
âI cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failureâIt is: Try to please everybody. â Herbert Bayard Swopeâ
âSuccess is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful. â Albert Schweitzerâ
âSuccess isnât just about what you accomplish in your life; itâs about what you inspire others to do. â Unknownâ
âMany of lifeâs failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. â Thomas Edisonâ
âDonât be distracted by criticism. Rememberâthe only taste of success some people get is to take a bite out of you. â Zig Ziglarâ
âThere is a powerful driving force inside every human being that, once unleashed, can make any vision, dream, or desire a reality. â Anthony Robbinsâ
âLeadership is a potent combination of strategy and character. But if you must be without one, be without the strategy. â Norman Schwarzkopfâ
