The "the curtains are just blue!" crowd make me so relieved English is taught the way it is at our school. Whenever we do poetry, for example, we always take a look at who the poet it and their background, mainly for an idea of how that would have impacted the poem they are writing. We've done many anti apartheid poems, and the authors were in fact around during apartheid and either in the various uprisings or critiquing the government through their work, for example "In Detention" by Chris Van Wyk. Like you can't possibly sit through all that and say the curtains are never blue 😭😭😭
