Splatoon Biology Musings Part 23: Lifespan

The rule of thumb for cephalopod lifespans is that they are very short. Most cephalopods are semelparous, which means that they reproduce once in their life, then die. This is in contrast to being iteroparous, where you can reproduce multiple times in your life.

After mating, cephalopods undergo a process called senescence - basically they stop eating and their body starts breaking down. This usually lasts a few weeks to a few months. Even if they don't reproduce, this will start happening anyways after a couple years. Most cephalopods therefore have lifespans ranging from a few months to five years in large species like the giant Pacific octopus.

But as always in biology, there are exceptions. The larger Pacific striped octopus (bottom right) can reproduce multiple times over its two-year lifespan. Vampire squids (top right) live up to ten years and are iteroparous. Larger oceanic squid species can live up to 15 years. Nautiluses (bottom left) are iteroparous and can live for around 20 years. And we don't know the lifespans of many deep-sea species, but it takes some of them at least five years just to grow to adulthood, and Graneledone boreopacifica females (top left) brood their eggs for over four years.

Inklings and Octolings, on the other hand, can have extremely long lifespans. Craig Cuttlefish and DJ Octavio are both over 120 years old, as both were around during the Great Turf War, 100 years before the events of Splatoon 1. Age has clearly taken its toll on Craig, but he's still kicking! The fact that Craig Cuttlefish is a grandfather and still alive confirms that Inklings do not undergo senescence. It can therefore be reliably inferred that Inklings are iteroparous. We have no reason to think that Octolings are different, especially given DJ Octavio is just as old as Craig is.

So this is a result of the human influence from all the Alterna stuff, right? Well I don't think so. The average human lifespan - assuming you're in a developed country, are generally healthy, and don't die of anything else first - is 75-100 years. The oldest verified person, Jeanne Calment, lived to 122 years. Yet Craig Cuttlefish is older than even that - canonically 130 during the events of Octo Expansion - and he's in much better shape than Jeanne was. It's estimated that modern medicine could potentially lead to a 130-year-old person by the end of this century, but I doubt they'll be as spry as Craig is during Splatoon 3. There has to be something else that leads to this extreme lifespan.

But believe it or not, there actually is precedent for this long of a lifespan in cephalopods. That's because we haven't discussed fossil cephalopods. There are a group of ammonites known as heteromorph ammonites - where the normal coiled shell of the ammonite uncoiled and went into some other shape. One of them, Diplomoceras, evolved a shape that looked like a 5-foot-long paperclip.

It's estimated that DIplomoceras could live to 200 years.

doc's real name is pyom gerra, but he's so embarassed by it and loves his profession so much he seriously prefers to go by doc. he has a squiffer in a cabinet in his office in case of emergencies (like sanitization zombies, or perhaps a teammate needing to be revived). he has great fashion sense and leads a fashion blog on inkstagram - although he doesn't realize the sheer amount of followers that he has...

Tbh, I think it's pretty likely at this point that Salmonlings will become playable at some point in Splatoon 3. Given their involvement in the story mode, the expanded+constant access to Salmon Run, the fact that Big Run is supposed to involve the salmonids showing up in Splatsville, they're much more prevalent in this game. I'm a little surprised there isn't like a one in a million chance that you get a special Salmon Run round involving fighting a bunch of Octoling-esque Salmonlings, but I think it's likely in the future. Maybe they'll come as part of the eventual DLC, much like how octolings became playable during the Octo-Expansion in Splatoon 2. I think it'll be cool! They'll likely come with a lot of lore, some themed weapons, and a collection of hairstyles like you get to choose for little buddy at the beginning of the game. I also believe they'll turn into goldfish crackers when they turn into salmon to swim around. Probably an amiibo too!

Take this prediction with the fact that I would also like Nautilings and Sharklings and Eelings and Jellings and Crablings and Anemolings and Shrimplings and Manta Rays. No Mantalings, I just wanna look like Big Man.

Whoops, didn't mean to paint Camila Noceda as a bad guy but yes she Really didn't have a choice here. I like more nuanced takes but Octarain society is most likely run completely by DJ Octavio which means it's probably a military state or based on a daimyo. When a military officer, that being Luz's training officer, "suggests" something as a punishment, it's Not a Suggestion. And of course, it's not like the Hpyno-shade program would be framed or pitched to Camila as a Bad Thing either. They'll help her focus and remind her what's really important. She'll be trained around other "troubled" individuals, etc., etc. The other option was They take Luz anyway.

Besides, it's not like Camila doesn't love Luz. She does! Genuinely truly loves her daughter. But she is a single widowed mother trying to provide for a kid who does HAVE Problems and Camila makes mistakes like everyone else.

I think there was a misconception in the fandom as a whole that I might make a separate post about later but the gist of it is, I think people see Camila as either this horrible inattentive mother who didn't understand her daughter...or as a paragon of motherly kindness who does her best...which, honestly? The truth is probably she's somewhere on the upper middle end of a good mother there, the two probably have a disconnect and don't communicate. It's because we saw so little interaction between Luz and her mother throughout the series. I'm excited to see what happens in season 3.

Now, there are two separate ways I can answer the folk song part of the ask. Disregarding the fact that all the "mainstream" Octoling music artists are DJs, the first way I could answer is probably the most lore-friendly to splatoon. Looking at how Octavio is presented to us throughout the game, what with his kabuto helmet and what I believe is a kimono in the sunken scroll and one of the octarian bosses being The "Octo Samurai", it's safe to assume that the octarians are coded as Japanese inspired which...has interesting...err...connotations. That we are definitely not talking about now.

Which means that octarian Folk songs are probably Japanese Folk Songs. Which, I'll admit I am not...terribly familiar with. Because that's a HUGE selection of songs and history that I'm just not familiar with.

However, this is an AU and I am more familiar (slightly) with Spanish folk songs. There is a fairly good record of Mexican folk songs by Alfonso Cruz Jimenez which has the kinda soft sound I can see singing in the quiet. But if you want specifics specifics, I can absolutely see Camilia singing Tú Eres Mi Sol as a lullaby for Luz.

Now! If we really want to pull from their Dominican roots and have more fun with it because come on, of course, we do. There is the Merengue genre which is this really fast dancing style that I would describe as high energy, it feels like it's constantly in Cut Time for any music nerds out there. Luz would like something fast and fun and be goofy too while the two danced and sang along. An example would be La Dueña Del Swing by Los Hermanos Rosario or basically anything by Joseito Mateo but I personally like Éxitos En Vivo.

Fairly certain that the last paragraph could be applied to headcanons for canon Owl House. Course they would also probably have fun singing just about anything as long as it was together. Camila seems to be, to me at least, the type of person who would sing while cooking? Luz as well now that I think of it.

Anyway, that one escaped from me haha. I think I am physically incapable of short posts! I would love to hear what people think they should listen to. Both in canon and in the Squid House AU. Haha, Luz probably has some really interesting music tastes in canon. Good Ask by the way!

Flying looked easy yet she had to learn from experience it wasn't all as it looked. She couldn't complain, it was a good way to meet the group easier. The feathered ink allowed her to change into a Tweetling with use of a handy device.

She wasn't afraid to be seen from her feathers, combined with bioluminecent spots, made her apart of the night sky. Flying away from the desert city the Tweetling found herself in the barren desert.

"Right on time." She landed on the golden sands illuminated by several vehicle headlights.

From Inkling to Octolings, there was Tweetlings, Merlings, even some salmonoids where gathered.

"Is everyone here Rusty?"

"Of course ma'am!"

Wendy nods, "From this moment on everyone here will keep this location as a secret unless I've given clearance. Understood?"

They all nod.

"Good, follow me." Wendy flew back up with the group tailing close behind.

Ever since the third horned octarian captain was taken out those who remained fled for their lives. When you're able to take down a flying human weapon shooting human bullets with less then a scratch, some common sense might actually kick up.

"You think the tracks will be an issue Rust?"

"Not at all! They'll dissappear in minutes."

"I hope so. If anyone follows us we'll have a lobster to boil."

An hour comes and goes. They entered the cave, leaving their vehicles hidden. This cave wasn't just a cave.

Pipes, wires, lights, zip lines paved this place.

"This cave was used by humans during their many wars to help with electricity and supplies reaching areas at a convenient time. We fixed it up for multiple reasons," Wendy explained, "We'll be going to the heart of this place. I believe some of you may find some interest in.

Splatoon headcannons

I think some would like to know my thoughts as to certain in game or just the Ideas I have made in my writing (Rp promts) -estacy:

Majority of Inklings and Octolings have a low acidity tolerance. In the game airborne microbes in charge of getting rid of ink rests in salt water until agitated. If an Inkling was to fall into water they'll panick from their bodies immediately having burning pain shoot through them leading to a self-splat, a panic induced response used to get away from life-threatening situations.

Speaking of airborne microbes, Octoling ink isn't handled well from evolution after the The Great Turf War. Their are people who clean up ink with an acidic ink (note: the acidic ink is colored to be white to not be mistaken as water.) to help break down Octoling ink so the microbes have an easier time while handling certain issues I.E: clear fluid covering the turf fields. Octoling and Inkling relationships where hidden during and after The Great Turf War. Before these relationships where common to be seen along with hybrids called Octosquids. With tensions rising it lead to these relationships to be taboo but it didn't stop these relationships, just hidden them away.

There's a chance not all Octolings are coming to the surface are escaping. Some are sent out to find information. Usually they'll return at night.

Weapons and limiters can be modified/ hacked to do certain things. I'm not going to say how cause I don't want the octarians and agents come after me.

Humans are believed to be extinct however a sunken scroll shows its possible some could have been put in pods. More could be hidden from regular view of the public.

I'll probably add more eventually.

The scientist stepped aside and blue ink was shot at Layla's hand, specifically the one holding her Octoshot.

"Donors?"

Kaiyou lost his shark, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR EXPERIMENTS!?"

"Oh it's simple. Humans had hope they'll live but prepared for the worst. So they frozen their reproductive cells, many already combined for implanting in a willing carrier. Tar tar and Octavio didn't believe us so we proceeded to impregnate a willing person with the first human and octoling hybrid. Then it was a success we used two embryos to grow into tanks forming two humans. One was a boy, the other a girl. There's one problem. We cephalopods don't hold mammalian blood so I captured Inklings and used some octarian units to preform my experiment."

Cyber 9 (Anti-Agent AU)

She made her choice where it'll be her end itself. To side with those who hurt her, right? She honestly doesn't believe herself. It was all a hellish nightmare blurring past leaving lost time.

The quiet room. A place where new memories bleed into each other along with the loud room. These rooms where one way to break anyone through deprivation of sound to sudden shock of sounds amplified, taking sleep away. This place was one she knew too well. They're always in those nightmares just like her unheard cries. The taste of blue copper mixing in purple.

Even though she was free her mind was enslaved. Cyber sat in darkness with deafening silence. All was quiet.

Light shined into the dark when an Elite Octoling opened up her Cyber's prison.

"Enter and shut the door."

Cyber heard the door shut, the darkness flooding back.

"Cyber's I'm wondering about what to do. Do I leave or stay for Crimson's sake?"

"Jaden dear, you do whatever you wish. 65 is of course their for you and Crimson."

"If I leave then-"

"I'll take the fall. You both will have me covering you. It's both your choice."

"But-"

"I have nothing to lose. I'll be alright."

Cyber looked at the door to see it open again.

"900. It's time to head out."

Cyber looked at Jaden nodding. Jaden followed Cyber's lead outside of this damp cell of unseen horror. No matter how many times she goes in Jaden fails to shake her feelings of fear, only kept them inside herself till she leaves.

She wondered how Cyber could return to such killing silence.

Cyber got into her costume of metal. She had anything significant covered up in SFX cosmetics, fake scars, and her iconic set of metal jaws pairing with her cybernetic arm and leg.

"This show is going to be like the others. Fun for all. I still can't believe I made it Jaden, everyone here is very excited about what I do."

"Yeah..."

Cyber looked at Jaden through the mirror, "Do you wish to leave? I can make it happen."

"Really!?"

"Yes, I told you I'll cover you and Crimson."

Jaden looked at Cyber before hugging her, "Thank you."

Cyber smiled having a her arms tightly around Jaden. As she an friend? An enemy? Both?

"You don't have to thank me." They broken the platonic embrace, "I'll meet you where we discussed."

"Of course." Jaden left the dressing room, the door creaking shut.

Now Cyber was alone to do one last thing. She opened a droor full of oddities she moved all of them away to lift out the bottom exposing a vile full of a multicolored substance and several unused needles. She knew once it wore off it would leave her weak in exchange for strength to hide her infliction.

Cyber got the vile along with a sterile needle in its packaging. Might as well get this over with so she won't have to worry about it longer.

"900."

Cyber mentally cursed, "Yes ma'am?"

"Be sure you use the proper dose."

Of course she'll be here.

"Noted." Cyber continued to get the needle out, fill it with the substance, then injected the substance into her neck where dark purple patches from constant infections grew agitated.

She tossed the needle in the trash bin with it covered so no one will be poked or end up hurt. She shoved a disk into each of her gills, covering her neck with a metal neck guard, before adding one last touch. Two contact lenses on her eyes.

"Now I'm done." Cyber went out of her dressing room with time to spare. Par for her course when dealing with a large show with an equally longer time to entertain.

One thing is for sure, everything is coming to close in on her. Oh well. She'll handle them when the time comes to allow her.
