W8 Studio - Project into the public
X-Challenge
I entered my team into X-Challenge, but unfortunately our group was too big to do the whole project so we split ourselves into two and did the app and boot cleaner as seperate ideas.
Boot Cleaner Prototype
Kent made a boot cleaner prototype over the weekend, using cardboard and pvc pipes. Not included is the spray, which would be situated underneath the boot.
Tumblr media
Survey Results
I sent out the survey on facebook, first to the Creative Technologies Year 3 page and then my neighbourhood community’s page. So far there are 62 responses.
Tumblr media
1. How often do you go on walking trails?
Once a week - 11 people Once fortnightly - 7 people Once a month - 23 people Once a year - 18 people Never - 3 people
2. Who would you usually take with you? (pick between 1 - 2)
Family - 46 people Friends - 19 people Dogs - 12 people No-one - 11 people
3. Have you heard of the Kauri Dieback Disease?
61/62 people have heard of Kauri Dieback.
4. If yes, how do you think preventing it is to New Zealand’s forests in the future? (on a scale of 1 - 10)
Average is 9.1, with 6 out of 60 people who answered this question ranking it below 8.
5. What would make the boot cleaner more convienent?
About 17 out of 62 thought that the boot cleaner was fine as it is. Two people answered there should be more of them.
Answers about the station itself: - Maybe if it was longer so you can keep moving as you clean. So others don’t get held up behind you. - If more people could use it at the same time. - Maybe a larger, flatter station - Proper set up like your picture - as some are only a mat and can easily be avoided - A seat to sit on when spraying shoes with the stuff. Very hard to work hose on one foot with a pack on - Regular servicing - I guess it's a bit of a bottle neck, depending on the popularity of the trial maybe it holds people up? - Have more of an obstacle that makes it so you get in slower. Therefore, making you clean your shoes more thoroughly? :D - Better maintenance sometimes they are worn out - Clearer instructions Easier to use Maybe a video
Answers about boot cleaner: - I guess if it rotated it might get more sit out from the grooves? Also, with covid I try to avoid touching anything and this this old style and the spray gun you have to touch - Have a cleaner for jandals. This one doesn’t work so well - Foot activated sprays. Physical barriers that force people to activate the spray to get thru the barrier. - Weight based means children and lighter people don't activate it so perhaps something that doesn't get activated by weight that you walk through. Shallow enough to just cover sole of shes/boots - Maybe some foot level spray system. Sometimes balancing on one foot to spray is tricky - the spray trigger should have a novel so that it covers each shoe in one spray - Fixed brushes as shown here. The hand squirter and hand brush combination is too difficult to manage. Lose balance and give up - A hand held brush to scrub the side of shoes. - No spray, just scrub and step - A device to clamp around shoes and spray all around - Rotating brushes - Making the brushes not worn down. Last bush walk I went on the brushes for your feet were too worn down and didn’t work very well - Bending down is tricky so a system that doesn’t make you bend over is good - If it always had disinfectant in it. - It having the spray stuff in it and not be empty - Not have to use the hand spray bottle that is found on some stations. - Find it ok as it is, but prefer the one that sprays your shoes when you stand on it to the hand held one - Automatic - probably some type of automated boot cleaner - I am liking the new "hop on to spray" pads
Other: - It’s fine but something to keep the spray from coming up and wetting your shoes and ankles would be good-keep it to the soles - designing something the birds might use, as it's far more likely to be transmitted by them. - An agent that actually is proven as working on phytophthora - I think the boots cleaners are possibly okay, it's the dogs i always think , might be more carriers especially as often off lead when they shouldn't be. - Nothing. I think it’s clearly marked with instructions and you can’t miss them at the beginning and end of tracks. One time there was a DOC guy there educating people how to clean boots properly which was helpful cos I had actually been doing the process the wrong way around prior to that! - RGB LEDs, to attract the kids - maybe having someone employed by like doc or something to make sure there are ppl washing their shoee
6. How effective do you think the covid tracer app was in preventing the spread of covid-19? (on a scale of 1 - 10)
Average is 7.3, with only 5 people out of 62 ranking it below a 5.
7.  We are designing an app and deciding on the content, what is most appealing to you?
Treasure Hunt - #1.82 average Augmented Reality boot cleaner - #2.06 average Running statistics tracker - #2.11 average
8.  Why did you choose the previous answer? Otherwise, give us an example of something you’d like to see on it.
About 5/46 people answered that they couldn’t see the image I had used, which is my own fault but the survey website is difficult to understand. 4/46 directly said “Treasure Hunts are fun”. Two people said it didn’t matter as long as it was simple to use.
- Statistics can drive behaviour - Treasure hunt appeals to families using tracks - There is a general lack of information about Kauri Dieback at the boot cleaning stations especially Tane Mahuta - information would result in adherence - The question wasn’t clear to me so I chose the fun option. No idea what AR boot cleaner is - maybe I didn’t click on something? - Seemed the most applicable (Augmented Reality) - Didn’t really have a view. Not sure what the point of the treasure hunt and A4 - I just think the treasure hunt idea has more appeal. Not clear how it works - A map of dieback - Information on Kauri on the area you are about to walk in, how many, if have any signs of disease - Definitely make it fun to use, stats make it interesting - learn with play: Tree/ nature trivia, e.g. like: what tree is this? (photo) - Sounds more fun (Treasure Hunt) - Fun makes things engaging. Also, running is boring. - Treasure hunt might make it more interesting for the grandchildren I take hiking. I know what AR is but I cannot imaging it being useful for book cleaning. - Links with GPS - Easy to find information for the novice /infrequent tramper - I didn't see how the answers linked to the app. What's the purpose of the app? If it's just to track like the covid app it doesn't need anything else on it. Most people who run in the bush would use another app already. - if i got it my main , objective would be to help with Die-back .Stats would be interesting so No.2,Treasure hunt No.3 , as kids grown up , but even if younger i might have put 3 , but would be good for younsters - I may take my child if there is a treasure hunt as part of the app/walk - The AR boot cleaner would encourage people to clean their shoes properly because it would make cleaning more fun and accurate. - I like stats - and I like the new aspect of the covid app where you get a little sticker icon when you get 14 days diary entry. - Got to be something interesting and fun. Maybe as an incentive add in spot prizes provided by possible sponsors.. - NZ health statistics - Interactive is fun and makes you feel involved - More visually appealing (Treasure Hunt) - More fun makes people more likely to use. - Don't understand what the boot one is - Routes recommendation, especially secret/not popular spots. Treasure hunting is a bit like that - Treasure hunt seems rewarding. AR seems interactive. Statistics sound boring - I think that if you make it a sort of game it will encourage people to get into the nitty gritty parts of shoe! - Not sure why I'd want a virtual boot cleaner tbh. Other content could be birds to look out for.. bit of history, exercise tips - Helps me know which parts of my boots are clean :)
9.  Thank you for taking the time to do this. Any other ideas/feedback for us?
- Anything to help contain the spread and educate people is good-Tane Mahuta was our first experience and there was no information and no reception to be able to Google it. - Would love people to be encouraged to use the boot wash more. - Good idea to encourage behaviours that will stop the spread. Well done - no, its communist propaganda - I develop apps myself, but I am doubtful about their applicability to Kauri Dieback reduction - An alarm when boots are not cleaned properly. - Still not sure what your app will do. - Good luck , please put a reminder if possible the importance of dogs on leads in areas where needed.PS We do own a dog! - Thank you for your work - I put 10 as meaning it is very important. You don’t say how the scale works though - Kauri Dieback poses a serious issue and I'm glad theres a project looking at this!! 🙌 - I would just try to be really focused on the problem you want to solve. Is it boot cleaning, is it awareness, is it history, is it fitness
Additionally Miles emailed Dr Gerth, so we have an interview with her on May 27th.

A letter for my mother to find.
I'm not spending time writing this out like I thought I would. I'm not walking you through every little step, checking paths are clear to be read, because they aren't, and I'm not taking every precaution to hide myself anymore because honestly if I keep doing that I really am going to kill myself.
I came out as trans last year after many many years of it burning and smoldering for any form of attention. I ignored it, in fact I even have a place in my brain that I visualized physically throwing myself into to keep myself quiet. Anything, everything to just not be found out, not be seen or heard, everyone go away I'm going to go hate myself.
You want to point to developmental cycles. Ok. Why do you think I stopped eating in a group at dinner? Did you know I would talk to myself in the barn at night to keep all the anxiety down and just blow off steam for an hour and a half straight? And you never questioned why it looked like I has half paying attention in some areas and trying hard in others....
In middle school I was already thinking about this. In fact, it has been on my mind for so long, I'm not sure it's never not been there. There was no cause, no big explosion of coom and suddenly I wanted to be a sex object or something. Double up, middle school was hell and I can't remember any of it except doing math at home and breaking my DS. That's basically all I remember of those 3 years. 'cept one thing.
I got asked by a chick in 6th grade to go out with her, well maybe 7th actually, and I froze and turned them down. Not because of the ASD shit, mind you, but because I'd been staring at Tyler Roth's bulge for 2 hours squirming in my chair. If a girl asks me out and I'm doing that right beforehand, and in fact get up to use the bathroom to clean up, you think I'm gunna say yes to the girl?
That's fucking stupid. No.
At least at the time to me it was.
Now I am more open about myself. I care more for personality than body, so sex doesn't matter unless it's a group effort (haha). I am definitely pansexual, there's no doubts there. Poly even, but I'm not sharing any of that with you. That's all the info you get.
If you can't tell from the title, I'm kinda trans kinda not. Non-Binary is the correct term, and I'm a little jazzed that I'm over my bullshit about it. I never said anything or made it obvious because of bad reactions from you and dad about me being gay, or other gay ppl, so like honestly why would I ever have said anything when I don't trust you?
This is also the origin of my trust issues.
In college, actually no, in high school I heard the term for the first time, in college, learning more and more about what trans ppl go through and nb people go thru, I locked myself in my room for 2 weeks and only came out for dinner. I almost committed suicide off of AB after that period because I couldn't handle it and it hadn't matched anything that I had known before. It's something I've actually wanted to talk to you about for years, and when I try to bring it up you scream at me and run away like I've ruined your whole life in some 80's teenager movie. You won't even hear my side of it.
There's obviously a lot for us to talk about, and I'll let you come up with your own questions. I'll make a lil' faq
1: Are you male or female?
A:. I'm always going to acknowledge my birth. I'm never going to not acknowledge what I went thru, the good or the bad, or that I ever had a penis.
Male in origin, but in-between. Genderfluid is the correct term. Maybe intersex as well, as that's how I see myself. I notice when I eat more estrogen enriching foods, my mood balances out. I've been eating more E rich foods lately (seeds, dry fruit, oat bran in the morning) and I've honestly never felt more.... Normal.
2: If it's fluid, what the hell do I call you?
A: Well it's not like you'll make me explode at you if you straight up call me he and I'm in a dress, more I'll be watching the ppl around you staring at you calling me a he.
My pronouns are hi / shi / him / hir / they / them, and honestly my rule is call what you see. The I is there for... Well, intersex. Male or female presenting.
So again, call what you see. I do get mad though, especially if I worked really hard to make a banger of an outfit. Honestly, so glad you don't know my style either... If I'm obviously trying, respect that. I don't always though, only on special occasions.
3: What about your name then? It's effeminate.
A: I'm effeminate, what's your point. Hell if you want a bullshit term to look into look up genderfaun. Within genderfluidity there can be limits, which ppl of course have denoted how people will denote it. Genderfaun basically means cboy. A male embodied person never quite unclasping on full effeminacy.
4: How have I never heard of this?
A: Same reason women's issues are more vocalized to men's issues. Same reason why I'm expected to be the one running the construction site and my partner is supposed to be my loving little wife. Cboy's, intersex ppl in general rly, don't really have a need to be found out. And quite rare, actually. Honestly, Nonbinary is what can go on a paper and what is legally applicable, so that's the 'umbrella' term, if you need one.
5: So what makes you a cboy then?
A: years of undeserved anguish, hating my body, not wanting breasts, wanting to give birth, my dick feeling out of place or straight up like a tumor on my life, relationships being hard to start and even harder to keep literally because of sex, crying after being made the top for sex, having to top at all, expectations beset by other's that I don't get a voice in, not getting a voice in general and not being in any spot of authority or passed by the same or opposite sex in both education and normal social life, oh and also every time I see a picture of a cboy I'm happy, not horny.
6: Why that term? Rather harsh
A: I agree. If there was a better term that was as equally descriptive I'd go for it. I don't think intersex male is quite applicable tho, nor does genderfluid work on a job app., Tho neither does cb. It started as a term in porn but people have taken it as their own, me included.
Again describe it in one word that isn't confusing (transfeminine for example, genderfaun for another) and get back to me when you figure it out.
7: Possibility A - you're crazy
A: That'd be cool if I was crazy actually, then I'd actually fucking feel normal. Like I had a normal problem. Like I was being treated like I should be in society. Sadly enough I've talked to multiple shrinks, other trans and nb people, other cboys, and pretty much everyone agrees my living situation was really fucked up, as we're the expectations beset upon me. Not always, and I'm not just spraying buckshot over my whole life, but there's some stuff we REALLY need to talk about.
I've actually made it my life mission for the last 10 plus years to find someone like me being interviewed. I have had the hardest time too because I beat myself up about it so often, unless I tripped over a podcast episode (like I actually did) I'd never find anything and just think I was schizophrenic or something. Hell for a while you had convinced me I was because of stuff you were doing and talking about, and like bloody usual, not letting go of or shutting up about for months.
Literally half the reason I moved in to where I am was to checksum myself. I am definitely not schizophrenic and absolutely have a panic and anxiety disorder.
Possibility B - ok I'll bite, who else is there?
A: here's the podcast that made me feel safe. We're not 100% similar, but a lot of what he is saying I get. And while he lives in cali, stuff your biases. He moved here from japan when he was 12 or something.
https://www.furwhatitsworth.com/?episode=s9-episode-3-nb-nb-nb
This is not the only podcast I've listened to, but it's the best perspective I've heard. And I can say for solid, to this day, I get exactly everything he is talking about. Every single thing.
8: Ok, so what about your name (should you be on board)
A: Thats hard for me. I know I came with Ari and then tried Faun, but Faun is more a nickname for me from somebody and I liked the sound. I still like the name a lot too. But my name is Aremis, it's been Aremis, I'm going to move on and stop thinking about that one so hard.
9: Why not keep your old name? I'm offended you don't have my father's name anymore.
A: ok good for you for inscribing your bullshit onto someone before they can even he a say, as usual.
My dead name literally hurts. I've tried to explain to you, you ignored me.
That's all you get. Deal with it.
10: I'm not sure I'm ok with this.
A: Neither am I but I'd be dead right now from jumping under a semi in traffic a few months back if I hadn't. This isn't a mistake, or anything you did to me. It's just how I am. Now I know why you want the new DSM so bad.
By the way, dsm backs me up. So if god is gunna have to say something because of your convictions, I'll walk.
Peace. I'm done pooping now, time to get off the toilet.

that post about the handholding thing,, u dont have to answer this but do u agree with everything islam says? im muslim (Born muslim) and lately ive srsly started doubting some stuff (like the position of women in islam and just religion as a concept). I honestly feel so bad but nothing/nobody on the internet has convinced me to really start believing again. I dont feel connected to islam or any religion and Reading about the "extreme" stuff in islam only makes me doubt more. (1/2)
(2/2) And i know culture and religion are seperated but seeing alot of muslims around me being so homophobic and mysogynistic really fucks me up. I know i'll never say any of this stuff off line bc my family would disown me/beat me (they told me before) so sorry If im bothering u or if this is too personal. I just have to vent somewhere bc ive been muslim my whole life and now that im beginning to lose my faith I feel like I have lost out on a lot of stuff nonmuslims/nonreligious ppl havent
hmm i see. well it’s not up to people to convince u whether you should have faith or not. religion is something personal, and i see spirituality as a dialogue between you and whatever higher power you believe in. if you don’t believe in it, you simply don’t and no amount of preaching is going to do the trick for you. ultimately, it is up to you to decide whether you believe in or not.
we mostly have different experiences of islam so i don’t think i’m the person you should be talking to when it comes to 1. scholar knowledge of islam, which i do not have and 2. not being able to separate culture from scripture, which i can. that being said, there was a long period in my life, i’d say from age 13 to 18, where i just couldn’t get behind my prejudices because i judged the religion i was born into by the standards of the people around me. it wasn’t my family but it was classmates and friends who were parroting the same bullshit their own parents believed to be true. i thought islam was an intolerant religion because the people around me were bigoted.
that being said when i got into college and was surrounded by white ppl who weren’t used to have a muslim around, i started getting asked a lot of questions and in the end it forced me to dig deeper and understand my faith, my relationship with Allah, more closely. that and the fact that they too were parroting the same bigoted bullshit their parents told them about islam and muslims, but this time from the other side of the issue. and although i was born a muslim, my parents left my religious education up to me because they didn’t have time to teach me or they didn’t care, i don’t know. but that forced me to go to the roots of islam, and it’s through reading about the life and principles of the prophet pbuh that i finally understood what it was like to be muslim FOR ME.
so do what makes u feel comfortable or safe for the time being. i’m not a preacher and i only try to live by the rules that the prophet abided to, as opposed to whatever ppl tell me i should or i shouldn’t do. there are a lot of bigoted people everywhere and i’ll be damned before they change who i wanna be but that’s just me. there are disgusting, misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic muslims out there it’d be stupid to deny it. but there are a lot of muslim women who know their worth, of LGBT muslim who power thru hardships to conserve their faith against all odds, of good people through and through that happen to be muslims and these ppl inspire me to continue to both question my faith and perpetuate my relationship with god. it’s not free of bumps and mishaps but it’s what i have and i am happy with that. good luck with everything and remember that it doesn’t make u a bad person, bad deeds make bad people.
