little weirdo
this is the first tiktok i've ever made and i don't even frequent tiktok and watch videos much so yeah it sucks, but my kingsnake Ankh is still so funny
she literally thrashes around with the mouse, and then today she lost it and bit herself before finally finding it again lol
hey so i was wondering (love your blog btw), i have a mexican black kingsnake who's a couple years old now, he's very chill and very focused, and when it comes time for feeding he's incredibly eager, and when he bites onto it he grabs it and then wraps himself all around it and constricts it, which i'm pretty sure is the normal eating behavior for a kingsnake since they're constrictors.
but then there's my younger california kingsnake who's still under a year, and she has a much more anxious personality, and when it comes time for feeding she's much more cautious, will strike and then back off, strike and back off, strike and back off, then when she finally grabs on, instead of wrapping around the mouse and constricting it, she starts to writhe around and shake the mouse like a rat terrier with a rat, sometimes so vehemently that she ends up tossing the (frozen and thawed mouse) across the terrarium.
anyways i've never heard about snakes killing their pray by shaking it around like that lol. is that a normal way that these snakes will sometimes kill they're prey, or is my california king just that odd?
That is so incredibly weird, wow! Sounds like your girl is just a little weird, I've never met a kingsnake who shakes their food like that before. What might be going on is her head is a bit shaky because she's getting herself so excited with the striking and backing off, and she's just trying to re-position the mouse in her jaws. That's nothing to worry about as long as she's not shaky otherwise. Cali kings can be a little too enthusiastic; my guy Viago has launched mice across the enclosure with the gusto of his strikes before.
But yeah, kingsnake eating habits can be very variable. Some will constrict, some will just grab, some need their time to check out food, etc. Completely down to the individual.
