Slowly starts incorporating more meat into the meals he makes you, mentioning how turtle is a delicacy in some places- you get the idea

But in Mikey fashion, he doesn’t like to wait to get what he wants

He suddenly starts asking you strange questions from, “did you know that cute hamsters cannibalize each other? CRAZY right!?” To “have you ever wanted to know what turtle taste like..?”

Eventually his patience thins and nervously asks the big question, but you’d understand right? Ofc you would! He shouldn’t be so nervous around you!

Ofc after hearing his request you start to understandably freak out, will he want to take a bite out of you too? Is this it? You don’t want to die like this!

Don’t worry! he could never ruin perfection, your a work of art!

(He’ll be happy breaking your skin with his teeth and lapping up the blood tho)

Surprisingly, he won’t FORCE you to do it, but be prepared for his mighty persistence and requests

He’s pretty much trying to hype you up

If you cave he is OVER THE MOON

Constant praise and affection is what you earn while you contemplate what you had just done

If you don’t cave, he’ll start to get a bit aggressive with his hype, and starts slowly giving you less and less food you until you do it-

5/10 experience, you will be scarred for life leaving you with a bad taste in your mouth. But other than that expect lots and lots of cuddles and delicious not human food!

Sharing my hc for two bit's sister. The book doesnt say so, but i imagine her as younger than ponyboy. Around 10-12. Same dad as two-bit who left the fam while mrs.mathews was pregnant with her. Has her group of school friends that she eats lunch with and plays with on the playground, but outside of school is a lil lonely. All the other kids in the neighborhood are older or already friends with two-bit. So she's besties with her mama. Also mrs curtis who is also besties with mrs mathews, comes over a lot to hang out at the mathews house for a girly day. So diff than two-bit, she's always helping out around the house and doing girlie stuff with her mom. Still loves two-bit to pieces. He'll take her out to eat, go watch movies and play on the swings with her (during the day). At night, he's out looking for some action. She gets along okay with the gang, but she's clearly the lil sis and she doesnt try to tag along to everything. She knows she's too young and know the older boys don't always want her hanging around. They'll still take her along sometimes for the rodeo or like the state fair. She gets along best with johnny as he'll sit with her while she does hw or her crafts and doesnt get impatient or bored. He actually teaches her how to hustle the boys at poker. She hustles dallas once and never again. Darry has a soft spot for her since she's so well-behaved and sweet. Also, he watched her grow up. She secretly had a crush on him when she was younger. The boys all knew since she would bake him cookies and cake all the time. Steve and soda were going to tease her but two-bit was worried she'll cry so he punched them first. She never said anything and got over it as she got older. Two-bit panicked once when he saw her talking to tim shepard at the theater. He thought she moved on from darry to tim as her crush. She was just asking if tim's seen the gang; she didnt want to walk home alone.

Hange Zoe

Someone. who. listens. They don't even need you to ask or understand but someone who can listen to them as they ramble on and on. They are very used to people grumbling and rolling their eyes at their words but it doesn't mean it doesnt stings a little every time it happens. So if you listen to them with a small smile or just showing interest, listening into what they are talking about they might just marry you on the spot

Someone who is a tad bit more clam, they (even if they will never say it) need someone who is able to calm them down and is just calmer then they are.

Someone who is willing to take a few risks, you only live once and Hange doesn't want to fall the rule all the time and enjoy taking a few (safe) risk. And it's even better with someone they are in love with.

Levi Ackerman

Someone who is understanding and patient. Levi isn't able to talk about the things he feels and it's a slow and hard process to fully trust someone. But trust me once he gets to that point there is no getting out.

Someone who is okay with rambling and also able to sit in silence for a few hours. Sometimes Levi needs to just hear the voice of someone he loves when his mind gets too loud but sometimes he needs to just sit with you in silence as he tries to work out everything that happens in his mind.

Someone who okay with not going out all of the time, he isn't a big fan of leaving is little home and would rather be together alone then around people who he doesn't know and trust. But at the same time he needs someone who can slowly help him get out of his comfort zone.

I DIDN'T REALIZE HE WAS MOMO initially i had no mental image and then i thought he was riku? which is wild because now i can't imagine him as looking different even though he's not too closely tied to actual momo in my mind. anyway but other than that... he felt very protagonisty so i was like hmm a bit generic so let's see where it goes?

HOPE MY BELOVED i love characters who have a good heart but have to go through ALL the bullshit i love seeing em stand firm for their goals. he's so sweet and i love all the little character notes throughout the story, he's got a unique pov. i woulddd say re my first impression i get attached to characters who have a super unique premise and personality and he's not necessarily either of those (though the premise of growing up with curse is fairly unique!) so i was kind of right but he definitely grew on me a LOT

i'm sure there are much less random moments to say or much more little and sweet moments to bring up but i like how he just fuckin. falls into the water in sirena. poor guy + shows his devotion to curse + i love how he doesnt know shit about water or swimming. also i predicted it 💯

Idea for a story

i want to see him try and impress taxes and a general government rulership on a bunch of eternan bandits. politics 👍

i'd also love if there was a little story with a post canon conversation or two with curse. and ofc im hyped for meteor showers

Favorite relationship

i like him and coda a lot, how their relationship grows and develops, and how sweet they are by the end... especially because at the beginning coda feels like he's kind of alone in the world except for fang, even with an expanded crew. in contrast hope is so nice and open and can have a real positive impact on him

Favorite headcanon

i like giving him more desi and middle eastern elements, like a nose ring and other fitting jewelry, & changing his appearance a bit from momos because he's kind of his own guy <3 aside from visual things... i think he gets into some kind of craft so he can give things to people :) he is a blacksmiths apprentice so probably metalworking but in aus or different contexts i could see him getting into visual/pencil-paper art or pottery

diff people of the cast raging at video games 🫶

Munakata does not rage at video games, he crafts impeccably worded missives to the game companies letting them know about the deficiencies in their products. Munakata generally doesn’t strike me as someone who would rage at video games anyway, he’s actually having fun if he’s losing because then it gives him a chance to craft various strategies in order to win. On the other hand though if there’s like a glitch causing his loss I could see him being displeased and writing angry letters like an old man responding to the newspaper editorial section. Also I feel like he might at least find himself annoyed at online multiplayer games, like he expects everyone to act in the way he’s planned and when some edgy teenager says screw off old man and Leeroy Jenkins their way through a raid Munakata starts huffing irritably and pushing up his glasses.

Yata and Fushimi I think would be opposites in this, Fushimi just quietly stews in his spite while Yata is absolutely yelling at the screen and has probably destroyed more than a few controllers by throwing them into the wall. Like imagine the two of them on multiplayer and getting defeated, Yata’s all red in the face and leaning real close to the TV all you fuckers I’m gonna kick your ass. Someone trash talks him and he’s shouting back and berating teenagers, and if he loses a boss fight because he got caught unaware he almost punches a hole in the wall. Meanwhile Fushimi is just sitting there quietly, muttering under his breath. Yata gives him a look like you okay Saruhiko and then Fushimi gives the most twisted smile as he’s like I’m fine, preparing to utterly destroy anyone who stands in his way because he’s not getting defeated by a video game.

The Homra guys probably occasionally have raging at games moments, I bet Bandou brags about how he’s a professional gamer so he never loses his temper. Akagi’s like oh hey I just beat your score and Bandou’s immediately like the hell you did what the fuck. Imagine one day Totsuka asks to play and it’s some difficult PvP multiplayer online game, the Homra guys are like sure you can try it but just be warned these guys are brutal. The Homra alphabet all go through various stages of yelling and trash talk as they try to survive but Totsuka is just smiling and smiling. In the end it’s just Totsuka and Bandou left and Bandou’s talking about how he’ll take it easy on Totsuka and while he’s talking Totsuka’s player character just casually stabs Bandou’s in the back. Bandou is immediately crushed and Totsuka’s all sparkles and happiness as he’s like this was a fun game, you guys were right.

Contrived tropes, the Kingdom of the Planet of the apes, and how to write a fallen civilization

Okay so the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

(I'm just going to keep using these gifs instead of the ones from the new one sooo)

How did you take an absolute masterpiece of a trilogy, crafted with internal conflict and nuanced characters and some of the best moral dilemmas I’ve ever seen in media, and create a movie so boring that I could barely sit to the end… IN WHICH YOU MAKE A WHOLE NONESENSICAL PLOT TWIST THAT MESSES WITH THE LAST MOVIE.

And I have thoughts, some ideas for rewrites, IDK I’m just so disappointed with western media I absolutely loved the other planet of the apes movies. (The war for the planet of the apes messed me up in the best and worst way possible for DAYS). I’m not going to claim myself as better than the writers here, but I am. I can do better. And I will. Suggestions are appreciated. Also note I haven’t watched the original planet of the apes movies. I’m only talking about the triology here.

Honestly the trilogy was perfect, and I want something original from Hollywood and it’s so sad that I have to ask that. Anyways watch indie animation; it’s amazing and here we go:

Noa, and how to copy Ceasar but badly

The wasted potential. What I will say is that they did make him cry. Love to see that.

Other than that, the first bit of this movie, with the trio and a bonding ceremony only for protagonist to lead the bad guys to the tribe, which causes all of them to either die or be taken away, leaving the protagonist to make a basic goal to make things right.

Does that sound familiar?

It’s basic middle grade fantasy. Not that there’s anything wrong with middle grade, quite the contrary, middle grade has some of the deepest writing known to humanity. But this? It feels like someone took basic tropes and shoved it onto a Save the Cat formula (did I mention how much I hate that book and want to burn it for what it did to wider storytelling?) then proceeded to pander it out for a good two hours. Honestly the poor sound design people. The music tried so hard to make me feel something. But I didn’t. Which juxtaposes the last movie and it’s visceral storytelling but I digress.

Now if you wanted to use the same structure, the same events, but have them rise to the same level of perfection as the trilogy, then here are some suggestions.

(a) Themes. Holy herbs the basic themes here actually rotted my brain. The ‘apes versus humans’ thing. In the original trilogy, these themes hinted at a question: at what lengths will you go for the people you love, and what havoc will that bring to the world?

(The entire decimation of the human race actually. Also, this is based off memory from years ago, my apologies if it isn’t completely accurate)

According to @myleesketches “the first three movies had so much more of a psychological exploration” Which yesssssss.

So for this movie? Simple. Keep the same theme. Although, the characters often mentioned the theme of trying to reclaim an old world, which is fine, and could prove to be interesting, so I’ll make an updated theme:

For what lengths will you go to preserve the people you love, and retain that safety for them, which will only backfire in the end? You cannot save them. Silly humans, silly apes, silly curse of intelligence, thinking yourself so powerful that you could change fate itself.

Okay actually that second half is interesting to me.

(b) Noa himself.

Siighhh he’s a basic protagonist. I’m sorry but he has so much wasted potential. Given a decent beginning then doomed to side quests for the rest of the movie.

So with this theme one can build a basic internal conflict. If I remember correctly, Ceaser struggled with the attachment form those he cared about, versus the needs/requirements society had of him. And he struggled with the initial rejection of his human family, the desire to keep his new family around throughout the entire trilogy.

So for Noa, we can use a slightly different angle. The idea of intelligence and control over fate perhaps? (IDK this movie showcased a new ape world, if you’re going to have a society replace human beings, might as well have a conversation on if human struggles are simply byproducts of intelligence, on if creatures cannot have intelligence without the problems it brings, on if, with evolution, it brings our own downfall.)

Listen it would be amazing.

Since they kept talking about how ‘Noa is so smart’, have him be that intellectual sort, with ideas for how to better improve things around him, and this sort of mentality, this need to fix things will drive him mad later. This can be his belief system, that he looks to the world and sees ways to make life better for those he cares about. (Yes I know this was the villain’s point of view here. That’s the point I have ideas.)

Then as far as a fear, or contradicting belief goes… hmm, perhaps we’ll bring control into this. How, compared to nature, the creatures within have no control of whether they live or die. This could be interwoven into that whole ‘clan law’ thing that they had. Nature is good, do not kill fellow apes, respect nature, don’t mess with it. (wouldn’t want to be like that last dominant species… wherever they are)

So Noa grew up with this belief, doesn’t like it because it contradicts his ‘intelligence’ belief, so it becomes his fear. He fears that, in the end, nature will make all his efforts futile. So in an attempt to counteract this, Noa often overcompensates with his intelligence to tame nature, and is quite paranoid over things he cannot control.

From here we get some ideas about what could happen in the plot:

-corruption of the clan, Noa cannot save them. They could still get stolen by some Ceasar cult… which is… fineee I guess. But let’s bring in some ‘brainwashing’ that is absolutely irreversible. Something that messes with everyone’s heads to such a degree that they aren’t the same anymore.

-okay and here you can parallel the first movie, the thing that started it all, trying to save the brains of those they care about. If Noa attempts to save them perhaps? IDK I’m throwing around some ideas. I do not want to write this entire thing but the ideas, they interest me.

-so human technology can save them? … hmm now how technologically advanced can the apes…

wait.

Okay so random orangutan guy? Has a human ‘pet’/companion perhaps? I’ll figure this out more later. Eccentric and technological but in the ‘reusing old human things in scraps’. Idk then something with that? … mmm I don’t love that idea. I might come back to this.

-also just. have. Noa’s tribe cherish the memory of Ceasar. If you’re going to have a Native American-esque tribe then do it properly. Otherwise do something original. In fact….. what I do for my non-human creatures and their culture is base it off of le science. So all. you. had. to. do. was base the new ape culture off of what apes already do, but tweak it for increased intelligence. In fact. I feel like you could do something interesting here. With these apes being aware of their human predecessors… and please have them be aware of it. The audience saw how the world got to this point, do not explain it to us again. Instead, have the apes have their own perception of what to do with the ruins, and how to continue. I don’t have any ideas for this as of now but I might IDK.

-what lengths does he go to? Well the usage of humans perhaps, in fact, perhaps Noa is the one who employs the slavery of humans for his goal? ANd he decimates the previous ape clan perhaps? Let him go to the lengths that not even Ceasar went to.

-like if humans are still intelligent and in scraps. And I’m talking absolute scraps. They live in tiny little villages, perhaps just a few, some old weapon stores, hidden away, and stories about what they once were. Resentment for apes has been built up for generations. So they could represent lost intelligence. Overall, they actually live pretty well, pretty comfortably. They have to live with the wild and survive, but there is peace. Less problems. Ect. ect. Yet still they crave for something better. -also apes keep some humans as pets. These pet humans are just barely intelligent. They are either treated very well or not so well.

Why. do. they. talk. so much.

That is all I have to say here. Bring back the sign language. That or have them make a mixture of languages… perhaps something where they use bits of words and sounds to accentuate a sign along with facial expressions. Sign language is a rich visual language and it would be perfect for beings who were not made to speak aloud to adapt into something of their own.

ALso more ape mannerisms. I loooveee when non-human characters have non-human characteristics. Make them act like apes. Make them act like smart apes. Please.

I miss Maurice. And side characters.

At this point the story would’ve been more interesting if Noa was a lone, angry wanderer, snapping at everything in his path on a search for his clan.

But also… le side characters. Also wasted potential here.

I think his name was Raka? He died or something. I did not like him. He talked too much about things we’ve already seen. I did not miss him.

But I mean… if you want to have his theme be about preserving the intelligence of the past?

If you have his theme be about not repeating the sins of the past, of treading forward with caution, and remembrance of the past so it does not repeat? Could prove to be interesting.

Yes I do like the idea of someone who lives on the edge of civilization, collects things, and has opinions for how society should run. But Raka was just… executed so poorly.

So you could have him be generally quiet, and constantly collecting things, a bit aloof, getting lost, seems silly but if you ask or if prompted or if necessary then he’ll say the most wise thing to ever exist. He’ll basically serve as an unreliable moral compass. That does die we’re keeping that. Perhaps when this new Raka dies it symbolizes Noa throwing the dangers of intelligence to the side, and instead pursuing his goals with full force.

Okay now to talk about Mae.

The little. girl. in. the war for the planet of the apes. was. so. tragic. and. wonderfully. told.

But like… wasn’t she supposed to be the last human?

Anywho, if you will have humans here. Please. I beg of you. No more skinny white teenagers with blue eyes trying to survive a world that should have some more diversity other than: white and not tanned whatsoever. Yes, I will be salty about this.

Anywho, so if you do want to have humans in this, following Noa and co. around, then some options can be:

-someone older… either middle aged or some grandma that managed to survive and is like a cat IDK

-a parent/non bio parents or smth + children

-parents who have lost children

-a lot of younger humans. Perhaps siblings that follow the apes around. They can be around … 12 maybe? Then… you know… if Noa uses them for some purpose and it’s horrific then it’s just horrific and you know… storytelling. Let it be dark.

(no matter which human option you go with, they can all be dark. LET IT BE DARK! MUAHA-)

Especially because the humans trust these apes. Like very much so.

…. okay so perhaps Noa here somehow uses the humans to regain his tribe back?

That sounds very le science and I’m not sure how much I love that idea… unless you have this thing set up where Noa likes tinkering with human scraps. In fact, just have this world be riddled with old human things… then they come across this whole facility/hospital thing or something.

Then Noa has control of the Ceasar cult at this point, and also does horrific things with them. If he does manage so save some of his tribe - either his mother or one of his friends - then they are also horrified, and they reject being saved.

ALSO

Backstory is better than chronological fight me. Have Noa flashback to his life with his friends, eventually leading up to how he lost everyone. Have it start with him traveling to save everyone. SHow a fleshed out character and tease that there are reasons behind these actions. Show them. Pay off. You know… storytelling. wowow.

What to do with the humans, rebellious apes, and suches

If you have some of Noa’s apes survive the Caesar cult, and stay behind to rebuild, then oppose Noa’s efforts, serving as the theme of nature’s simplicity. They have been living with nothing for awhile and there’s a comradery in that. There’s a peace in that.

Then Noa returns, not just clinging to the old world, but to a better one. And they know that this will ruin what little they have left.

Chaos ensues. Pain and angst and such

Victoria dials her best friend’s number, needing to tell someone about tomorrow night. “Toriiiii!!!” The other line exclaims. “Where’ve you been? You didn’t answer me at all yesterday!” “Hey Liza, yeah, I’m sorry about that!” “Where were you, girl?” “It’s a long story, but basically I was assaulted and ended up in the hospital! Concussion!” “You were probably over dramatic,” Liza laughs over the phone. “I’ve had concussions before, and I just slept it off for a few hours.” “My head was bashed into a wall,” Victoria states. “I blacked out and someone had to call an ambulance for me. I spent the night in the hospital and was out cold for at least three hours.” “Okay, jeez!” She groans. “No need to make it a competition!” “I DIDN’T--” Tori catches herself from screaming over the phone. “Whatever, anyway, I haven’t told you the best part.” “And what’s that?” “The aforementioned person that called me an ambulance, wanna know who he is?” “Oh my god! Just tell me!" “It was…” Victoria lowers her voice again, even though she’s alone in her apartment. “It was Bruce Wayne.” Liza is silent for a minute. “Liza?” “BRUCE WAYNE CALLED YOU AN AMBULANCE?!” “And… I’m going on a date with him tomorrow night.” “YOU’RE GOING ON A DATE WITH BRUCE WAYNE?!”

“Mhm!”

“HOW ARE YOU NOT FREAKING OUT RIGHT NOW?”

“I don’t know,” She shrugs. Her heart is beating but she’s cool on the outside. “But…I was wondering, wanna help me choose what to wear tomorrow night?”

“Is that even a question? What time should I come over?”

“Later today, maybe at like, 6?”

“See you!! Love you!”

“Love you too!” Victoria hangs up the phone before going to clean herself up. Showering, changing into fresh clothes, she goes into her home office to look at her creation. Fresh eyes looking at her hand crafted batsuit, working weapons and all.

Without the mask, she’s not the most confident in herself. She has the skills to fight back, but when she’s faced with a situation like being cornered, Victoria tends to freeze up. With the mask, she knows it’ll be different. It has to be if she wants to be what the Batman is. She holds one of the arm pieces, smooth and sturdy, and just admires her work.

The rest of the day passes by, a slow Saturday for her, until Liza comes over at least. The more she thinks about it, the more excited she is about her date. She can’t begin to fathom how the prince of Gotham is interested in her.

Her doorbell rings, and she rushes to answer it, but not before making sure she locks her office door.

“Liza!” Victoria exclaims, opening the door. “You’re on time!”

“Babe! You’re going on a date with THE Bruce Wayne! Of course I’m gonna be on time to help you pick out an outfit!!” Liza rushes through the house and to Victoria’s closet. “Okay! What did he tell you to wear?”

“He said something nice,” She followed her friend to her room, sitting on the bed.

“That’s it?”

“Yep.”

“Then text him! At least ask where you’re going!”

“No! I’m not going to text Bruce Wayne on a Saturday!”

“Why not?”

“Because he’s Bruce Wayne! And technically my boss!”

“Ugh, I keep on forgetting that you work at Wayne Enterprises!”

“How? You constantly bring it up!”

“I don’t know,” Liza shrugs. “I just forgot. Maybe it’s because I haven’t seen you in two months!” Victoria can’t argue with that. She had essentially shut herself off from the rest of the world, using her built up vacation time to avoid being fired.

In her defense, she doesn’t have many people she could contact. Since coming out, and more so transitioning, her family has cut her off, and Liza is the only one who’s stuck with her.

“I know, I know, and I’m sorry.”

“You texted me like, twice!”

“I was busy.”

“FOR TWO MONTHS?”

“YES!” Victoria crosses her arms. “What about when you went radio silent when that rich ex boyfriend of yours took you to the Bahamas for a week?”

“That’s different.”

“Is it though? You didn’t tell anyone.”

“Whatever, I’m done talking about this if you’re gonna have such a bitchy attitude about it!” Almost as if it’s a different person, Liza is smiling and happy again. “So, what are you thinking of wearing?” “I don’t know,” Victoria’s voice is quiet, crossing her arms in a defensive manner. “A dress, I guess.”

“Short or long?”

“Long. I’m thinking my black strapless one.”

“That would look soooo cute!” Liza squeals. “Oooh! And you could wear those Christian Louboutin’s that I got you!”

“Yeah, that could work.” Victoria takes a deep breath, resetting herself. “But won’t it be cold? I should have a jacket.”

“But don’t you want to show yourself off?”

“I don’t want to die from freezing.”

“He’d lend you his jacket!” Liza suggests. “He’s a gentleman after all! He called an ambulance for a concussion and asked you on a date! He’s so into you!”

“But what if he learns my personality and doesn’t like it? What if he’s creeped out by my knowledge and love of the Batman?”

“Girl, you serious?” She snickers. “If I were you, I’d be a lot more nervous about him finding out about…other stuff.” Liza motions to Victoria. “Are you gonna tell him?”

“I don’t think I should have to,” She grips the hem of her shirt. “I’ve transitioned fully so if we do anything…he won’t be caught off guard.”

“What if he wants kids?”

“Tomorrow is my first date!” Victoria jumps up. “We’re going to dinner! THAT’S IT!”

“Okay Jesus, I was just trying to be helpful!”

“It’s not working!” She raises her voice. “I am nervous as all hell about this and I wanted you to help pick me out an outfit!” “FINE! I HELPED! I’M LEAVING!” Liza storms out of the house, slamming the door in the process.

Victoria flops down on her back, sighing, and just spaces out for a while. Her energy is completely drained from Liza, and she turns on her tv to try to clear her head. She doesn’t have anyone else, though, so she can’t really drop her best friend. On the TV, there are reports of a robbery and shootout at the bank. All of the assailants, wearing clown masks, are dead. She’s heard of this psycho criminal, known as the Joker. Leaving a Joker calling card at every crime scene.

Victoria has been trying to find as much about Joker as possible, but when he surfaced, she was locked away, hardly paying attention to anything else. She’s been picking up things about him, and he fascinates her. All his methods seem to be provoking Batman. One thing she completely missed was Harvey Dent. He was being appointed as the District Attorney the next day, and it completely slipped under her radar. Victoria’s phone buzzes. A text, from Bruce.

You don’t care that I’m introducing you to a few of my friends tomorrow night, do you?

She’s not good with new people at first, and Bruce Wayne’s friends? What is she going to talk about with the ultra rich? But seeing as it’s Bruce mother-fucking Wayne, she knows he’s expecting a ‘yes’ and the question was nothing but a courtesy.

No, not at all.

Great. I’ll see you tomorrow night.

Since I'm a casual observer with no skin in the game, and prefer the media/artistic side of witchery in doing research for my own media ideas I don't want to make mistakes. git-commit The contributors to these repositories know that a well-crafted Git commit message is the best way to communicate context about a change to fellow developers (and indeed to their future selves). A diff will tell you what changed, but only the commit message can properly tell you why. Peter Hutterer makes this point well: Re-establishing the context of a piece of code is wasteful. We can’t avoid it completely, so our efforts should go to reducing it [as much] as possible. Commit messages can do exactly that and as a result, a commit message shows whether a developer is a good collaborator.

A well-cared for log is a beautiful and useful thing. A project’s long-term success rests (among other things) on its maintainability, and a maintainer has few tools more powerful than his project’s log. It’s worth taking the time to learn how to care for one properly. What may be a hassle at first soon becomes habit, and eventually a source of pride and productivity for all involved. In this post, I am addressing just the most basic element of keeping a healthy commit history: how to write an individual commit message. There are other important practices like commit squashing that I am not addressing here.

In order to create a useful revision history, teams should first agree on a commit message convention that defines at least the following three things:

Style. Markup syntax, wrap margins, grammar, capitalization, punctuation. Spell these things out, remove the guesswork, and make it all as simple as possible. The end result will be a remarkably consistent log that’s not only a pleasure to read but that actually does get read on a regular basis.

Content. What kind of information should the body of the commit message (if any) contain? What should it not contain?

Metadata. How should issue tracking IDs, pull request numbers, etc. be referenced? The seven rules of a great Git commit message

Separate subject from body with a blank line

Limit the subject line to 50 characters

Capitalize the subject line

Do not end the subject line with a period

Use the imperative mood in the subject line

Wrap the body at 72 characters

Use the body to explain what and why vs. how

Firstly, not every commit requires both a subject and a body. Sometimes a single line is fine, especially when the change is so simple that no further context is necessary. For example:

Fix typo in introduction to user guide

Nothing more need be said; if the reader wonders what the typo was, she can simply take a look at the change itself, i.e. use git show or git diff or git log -p. However, when a commit merits a bit of explanation and context, you need to write a body. For example:

Derezz the master control program MCP turned out to be evil and had become intent on world domination. This commit throws Tron's disc into MCP (causing its deresolution) and turns it back into a chess game.

Commit messages with bodies are not so easy to write with the -m option. You’re better off writing the message in a proper text editor.

Example:

Summarize changes in around 50 characters or less More detailed explanatory text, if necessary. Wrap it to about 72 characters or so. In some contexts, the first line is treated as the subject of the commit and the rest of the text as the body. The blank line separating the summary from the body is critical (unless you omit the body entirely); various tools like `log`, `shortlog` and `rebase` can get confused if you run the two together. Explain the problem that this commit is solving. Focus on why you are making this change as opposed to how (the code explains that). Are there side effects or other unintuitive consequences of this change? Here's the place to explain them. Further paragraphs come after blank lines. - Bullet points are okay, too - Typically a hyphen or asterisk is used for the bullet, preceded by a single space, with blank lines in between, but conventions vary here If you use an issue tracker, put references to them at the bottom, like this: Resolves: #123 See also: #456, #789

5. Use the Imperative Mood The imperative can sound a little rude; that’s why we don’t often use it. But it’s perfect for Git commit subject lines. One reason for this is that Git itself uses the imperative whenever it creates a commit on your behalf. Writing this way can be a little awkward at first. We’re more used to speaking in the indicative mood, which is all about reporting facts. That’s why commit messages often end up reading like this:

Changing behavior of X

And sometimes commit messages get written as a description of their contents:

Sweet new API methods

To remove any confusion, here’s a simple rule to get it right every time.

A properly formed Git commit subject line should always be able to complete the following sentence:

If applied, this commit will your subject line here

6. Wrap the body at 72 characters

Git never wraps text automatically. When you write the body of a commit message, you must mind its right margin, and wrap text manually.

The recommendation is to do this at 72 characters, so that Git has plenty of room to indent text while still keeping everything under 80 characters overall.

A good text editor can help here. It’s easy to configure Vim, for example, to wrap text at 72 characters when you’re writing a Git commit. Traditionally, however, IDEs have been terrible at providing smart support for text wrapping in commit messages (although in recent versions, IntelliJ IDEA has finally gotten better about this).

Take a look at the full diff and just think how much time the author is saving fellow and future committers by taking the time to provide this context here and now. If he didn’t, it would probably be lost forever.

Quackity had just kinda stared at you for a while, mostly thinking about how adorable you looked and how he wanted to spend his entire life with you.

“wanna go to bed” Your small hum was all he needed to know it was a yes.
