fearne calloway has always had quick fingers and a habit of finding the pieces that were not to be found. it's no different when the pieces become strings in her nana's loom. and maybe she spends more time there the moment that nana allows her to, just to study and watch, and maybe she finds her friends' threads. and maybe she takes her hell-branded, fire-marked claws and twists orym's thread around her finger once, twice, thrice, before letting it unfurl again.
and maybe when orym comes to visit, her nana gives her a long look and grabs her lantern with a sigh. fearne knows she is impressed, even if orym's servitude would have been an easy debt to settle with the way he comes around anyway. fearne is certain her nana will delight in an orym who is there of his own free will far more than whatever strange orym he sold himself as in desperation. fearne knows she certainly will.

This is was supposed to be a simple ask but it ended up getting long because of there being too many question and discussions but barely any answers so sorry about that.
On the topic of WhatPumpkin sometimes we all have to wonder what the fuck is going on behind the scenes, the latest news we got werent that much and it felt more of a like "Hey guys we are still alive dont forget about us" situation and it doesnt help that we cant really get any info because of how the only guy that Im atleast aware that works on it and is online is James and although I have no source because it was months ago, when beyond canon came back I remember him getting asked about Hiveswap and i dont remember if he answered it on the blog or on a reddit qna but he had said he cant really do much about it because hes just the music guy on that department and not an director or writer and he probably cannot say whats going on if hes aware of even the minimum because of NDAs and you know the situation is weird when not even the new director for post canon can do nothing about it or doesnt know what the fuck is going on over there either (i believe its more of the former).
On the same topic Hussie jumping the ship in my opinion feels like such an awful move in a moral and community sense, he hires fucked up people and ends up going through development hell and instead of trying to fix it he just runs away and gives someone else the work. He becasically invited destruction to that place by not doing background checks and shit and now everyone else but him has to suffer for it. I wonder if WhatPumpkin will close business after they finish Hiveswap (if they even manage to finish it) or if their writting quality wont be bad if they try to do Hauntswitch now.
I also sometimes wonder if Hauntswitch was made first maybe things could have been better. Think about it:
It happens on the Human World and you play as a cool kid looking troll and that could open the doors for a lot of potential to explore more about the Earth on the Homestuck universe and its conspiracy theories and also give us more video game parody mechanics.
The whole conspiracy theory Jude had that iirc had even the USA presidents connect to may be right considering the easter egg that shows some sort of cultists standing outside the mansion we see on the background and watching the events unfold.
We would get more answers for whatever the fuck those creatures that attacked the manor where.
another good dog best friend to fill the bec shaped hole in our soul <:
Exploration of what SkaiaLabs exactly does.
Overall sounding like an awesome story itself, a alien coming to earth and fighting a cult related to the presidents with a human companion. Especially considering how Dammek sounds like hes an asshole and also because of how trolls are usually violent could lead to interesting interactions.
I might be wrong and biased though but I feel like that concept could attract more outsiders than Hiveswap could ever wish to do. And hopefully thats it and that I wont waste almost an hour of my life rambling about this stuff (for my own sake because i feel like i could have spent my time better but i also need to post this somewhere and i dont use social media most of the time and when i do its usually to see fanart, memes and overall discussion of my fav franchises) but I probably will in the future.
It's cool with this ask. You brought up many good points here.
Yes, the question about Hiveswap was asked in a Q&A back in October 30th, 2023 from James Roach here (Archive ver for backup). The news about development should be something more like how Toby does with the Deltarune newsletter. Monthly, maybe do a special event ARG thing that gives insight of what's coming up, or anything like that. Though even with that, it might be probably too little too late since we are at 11 years since the Kickstarter had funded. Probably doesn't help since 2 million dollars was wasted, it's a mystery how the game is still being worked on if the original Kickstarter money that was given to them, had been used up. What is WhatPumpkin's new source of income then? Do they have a second job they aren't telling us about? Are they using part of that Patreon money from Beyond Canon since technically there are some that work within Hiveswap too like James? Then there's the fact Hussie not only wasted the money, but basically left the Kickstarter project he started in the first place. He may own it and be credited as the creator, but he won't be involved in the future Acts and Hauntswitch. I'm surprised nobody is pissed at him for scamming them out of 2 million dollars. Do people not care if the original person who hosted it left? Especially with the truth come to light thanks to Gio's research on this. I wouldn't be surprised if WhatPumpkin does shut down because they couldn't gain the sales needed after releasing Hiveswap Act 3. People will probably wonder if even buying stuff from Topatoco would help or not with HS merch like the prints slowly resurfacing. Drawing in the crowds from old and new to play the game will be tough. I wouldn't be surprised if Hauntswitch was first made in mind before Hiveswap. Dammek even had a 3D model ready too.
Tumblr media
Likely back when it was still a 3D game, we would control briefly but then after the cutscene of them being transported to the other planet, we would then have to take control of Dammek, have him meet Jude to possibly have him find a way to help him back home, and the pair would adventure on Earth itself for the rest of the game to find out about the monsters and the cult. Dammek's paranoid nature would play off Jude's conspiracy theory pretty well as it has the two involved looking deep into the mystery. I wouldn't be surprised if something about the cult would eventually tie in to his home planet and the rebellion as a final grand twist. An idea like that sounds more interesting than some girl getting lost on an alien planet and was roped into some rebellion that she has no reason to be part of besides being concerned for a friend.

I've been summoned yet again!!
I LOVELOVELOVE all the illustrations you've been doing for SL and ROTMR and I've returned to yell at you about it 💗💗
first i wanna talk about the illustration you made for the first chapter of SL. I wanna be not normal about framing real quick, because it struck me as a very specific artistic choice. Our perspective as the audience is placed outside the main setting. Literally. we're peeking through bushes.
we are Not a part of the scene currently unfolding. You could have very easily framed the scene to feel more like Yusuke's pov, but you chose not to. In the written version we're very much reading from Yusuke's perspective, but the audience is never Truly seeing through his eyes, it's not a i/me situation. The audience sort of looks over his shoulder. which, in the illustrated version of the scene, is exactly the position the audience is placed in!
I like that Testuya's gaze isn't on *us, this is a moment between them and them alone. It feels intimate. We're outsiders looking in on a story we have no place in. but ur so gawd darn good at this shit that it doesn't change the power and connection i feel as a viewer. Anyways, all that's to say, I think the connection you made between the two mediums was really neat and very well done. Infinite kudos!!
NEXT!! the most recent one you did
i mean. WOW. what a way to visualize tension!! I love how the rabbits are framed by the broken glass, it looks like they're trapped. they're walking on glass but scratch that bc the glass is already broken and unless they wanna cut up their toe beans they have to be veryyy careful.
Also, i love the silly little background yokai they're all so rise coded i love them sosososo much! The little wormy dude? he's literally the love of my life, i'm obsessed with him
on the topic of background stuff, ny is TRASHED. (referring to the illustration you posted for ROTMR chap. 2)
I knew there was a ton of rubble and destruction but i don't think i really digested the implications of it all. the purple veins choking metal and concrete? the strong buildings trusted by new yorkers to shelter and protect reduced to unrecognizable rubble?? It evokes such a feeling of horror…and considering possible real world events that may or may not be canon in ROTMR, it hits Really close to home. the whole ordeal is just such a terrible trauma.
on a lighter note, the puppies are adorable as ever! I enjoyed them so much on your cover art for the fic and it's such a treat to see the puppers closer up. I actually love this scene, it's so goofy! poor yuki is concerned for todd's safety on SO many levels 😭😭
Also, i have to bring it up every time, I love the paw shapes 🥺
i love all your shapes but im a BIG fan of the rabbit shapes. They're so rabbity i'm obsessed!!!!!! the ears and the paws get me every time 🥺🙏
and i never mentioned your drawings from a while back, i yelled at Rhin about it at the time but they Just reblogged ur tetsutoshi thingy and i got blown away all over again AWWOOOGA HUF HUF WOOF WOOF WOOF!!!! im never gonna get over it!! All your little spicys are great 😭😭🙏
I dont think any of us are getting past the furry porn allegations. 💀
And while i'm on the subject of spicy tetsutoshi, the new chapter of H&H was BEYOND phenomenal!! It was SO worth the wait, you put your whole soul into that thing 😭🙏
I honestly haven't fully collected my thoughts on it, there's so much to digest and think about. I might invade ur ao3 inbox sometime soon but i just wanna let u know that i at least read it
anyways, back into the abyss i go, I'm fully submerged in the sand box, you guys buried me under the sand and placed a makeshift flag on the mountain of sand covering my body. lots of hugs and kisses, until next time!!
- 😎
WELCOME BACK SUNNYYYY
The way I just JUMPED from my bed this morning when I saw I had an ask from you HIIIII OMG
My Illustration Era is afoot buddy! Listen, I have a to-draw list that lately just keeps getting full of composition and background ideas for specific scenes and what am I supposed to do about it? NOT deliver??
It's just. I feel like I found it, I found a winning formula for creating immersive ambience that involves having at least three layers of objects (foreground, background, and the characters), and it's funny how by adding that bit of distance from the characters, that "obstacle", suddenly the audience acknowledges they're there, like there's a camera they could move in the space. Plus the blur effect, it creates some DELIGHTFUL pictures, and I've been exploring the potential of that method in as many creative ways as I can find with these scenes! Might not be long until I try to tackle landscapes... Myself from a year ago would be so proud...
For SL Chapter 1 my original idea was actually very different. I was thinking of putting the camera well above both of them, inspired by that line that says their ancestors and Grandfather Jotaro are watching them from the wooden beams. In the end I decided against it cause it was a weird angle to find reference for, cause they'd look a bit awkward from above and mostly cause I realized I was particularly interested in showing Tetsuya's face, since in SL this is the lasting impression of Tetsuya that's going to linger throughout the entire fic, and I wanted the viewer to have a clear look at the person we're talking about. The resulting composition was not as "confrontational" as I had originally intended, it actually feels more intimate and warm, although I did make use of sharp light and shadows to create more tension. I feel like it does work in service to the fic as a whole, though 😌 And Rhin also mentioned that "outside looking in" vibe! It plays within the character-centric, present tense third person that Rhin's narration uses, although of course I'm not planning for all the illustrations to be from over Yusuke's shoulder. I'm kind of approaching it like I would movie scenes! This is Yusuke's movie and we'll need to see his face too from time to time adgsffs
Like with the Chapter 5 art! I really really wanted to have a clear view of all three characters, so I was thinking of an interesting and dynamic way to see all of them confronting the oni. Then I got the idea of the broken glass! I was very excited to see what it would look like framed with that transparency. I also had a lot of fun with the little marketplace yokai, finally those weird critter doodles I made on the corners of high school notes can come in handy- Admittedly, it's not exactly the big crowd I was envisioning? But it gets the point across that they're not the only people there.
Regarding ROTMR Chapter 2, oh boy I feel you. With this one I wanted to achieve a sort of contrast between the destruction and the cute comedic puppy rescue moment, which would reflect the duality of that scene and, in a way, the fic itself. I wanted the environment to accurately represent how messed up everything is, cause it really does hit different when you're seeing it in a picture. I actually took reference from the Rise movie, and how New York actually looked during the krang invasion, and was kind of surprised at how much utter destruction is depicted, including the pink/purple goo EVERYWHERE. In contrast with the bleak nighttime setting of the movie, though, this scene is set in broad daylight, so you can see the goo and the buildings and the dusty environment very clearly, but there's also an intended air of calm and you can see a bit of construction going on in the background. The danger has passed, and they're going through the recovery stage now. I'm actually very proud of the puppy designs, they're such cute little goobers, and especially had a lot of fun with the curly haired one- Just a mop hopping across krang rubble don't worry about it.
COME BE SO INCREDIBLY NORMAL ABOUT RABBIT PAWS WITH MEEEE every single time I draw them I imbue in them all the insanity I feel from not being able to touch them. Fantasy is a cruel, cruel mistress my friend.
I'M SO SO HAPPY WITH THAT SPICY TETSUTOSHI, I was taking pose reference from a photograph but dang, I didn't imagine it turning out SO pretty and on-model, I couldn't even decide on which palette to use with it, which is why I just posted two versions. Fun fact, the ref actually didn't have clothing, but I decided to add clothes after the fact cause get this: ruffled clothing actually makes the whole thing so much more sensual. Just trust me on this, it suddenly made everything x10 times better. Listen, the posing gets you in the moment, but the clothing is the story. It tells you where those hands have been before and what they've done. Same with the places where fur is ruffled. This is one of the reasons I don't often draw the strands of fur on my rabbits (even though I love doing it), cause I want them to be purposeful when I do draw them, to really convey that idea of untidyness. AND SO I CONTINUE ON MY QUEST TO DRAW STUFF I WISH TO TOUCH- ahem ahem
Gosh I'm so completely OVERJOYED that you're liking H&H, that one's a bit of a drama fest compared to ROTMR but it's truly a labor of love, I put all the care I possibly can in crafting every chapter. I'm aware my chapters are very chonky and intense, they're full stories more than they are individual scenes; I think that's a style that suits me well, but I also know it's a bit of a daunting task to discuss them in length. Just knowing that you're sticking with us in our madness makes me so warm and fuzzy inside 💕💕💕💕 I treasure every comment and I love you FOREVER!! Pop in anytime so I can infodump at you some more! 🥰

more atsv ramblings heehee its so long
and being told 'you cant have your cake and eat it' but miles saying you can if you have two cakes but there are two earths and only one radioactive spider between them bc spot took the spider from earth-42 and he cant save his dad and have the multiverse intact as well According To Suspicious Bitch Miguel who i dont really think is a bad guy but definitely something is up with him bc he spoke abt another miguel's family but Not His Own. paralleling kingpin who wanted his family back with him even from any world. theres something going on there. especially considering the world we saw o'hara was in completely collapsed and ALSO peter b parker was there when that happened like theres a story to that tht we dont completely know. we never saw a whole world collapsed yet like i dont think it was just a matter of miguel staying in a world he wasnt supposed to because when peter b tried to do that in the first movie he was told that HE would die and not the world. if it was just a matter of alternation of canon = world collapsing, then shouldnt earth-1610 and earth-42 collapsed since spot messed up the canons of both world when he took away that radioactive spider?
and it would be narratively fitting if prowler miles is the one to beat down spot in the end bc spot goes on and on abt how he and 1610-miles created one another when in actuality spot created 42-miles aka prowler miles by robbing prowler miles from the opportunity of becoming spiderman.. ALLEGEDLY. bc another way btsv's story could end up unfolding could be a reveal that earth-42 miles wouldve became a villain regardless of whether or not he was bit by a spider. which would become a subversion of expectations and definitely be a more controversial and more difficult story to pull off, but i think if done well it could be a superb story that highlights the power of choices and that 1610 miles didnt 'become' spiderman bc of the spider, but because he had chose to out of the goodness of his heart. and it would also play into miguel's idea of canon, in that in actuality miles-1610 really Was meant to be spiderman.. but then again this is just speculation on my part and theres so many directions this story could lean towards and this is just one of them.
for example like what if earth-42 miles isnt completely bad cuz like we only saw him for 5 seconds what if hes an anti-hero HMMMM. ORRR maybe they wont do that and theyll keep it as a story that shows how circumstances can change a person, and that 1610-miles and 42-miles are fundamentally the same; that both miles possess the capacity to become like the other (also another good trope i am a fan of 😏)
but also oh em geee so much to consider like firstly what is prowler's whole deal. we really know so little about uncle aaron and why he became the prowler to begin with and was it necessarily mile's dads death that wouldve led miles down the path to become the prowler.. and would officer jeff not have died if 42-miles was bitten by a spider? two brother's deaths being interchanged to have different outcomes on one child is crazyyy. im really so curious how that will be explained.
and his mom telling him to come back home with a proper cake this time. will that be two cakes? the shopkeeper of the cakes told him to write less, but miles opted to buy two cakes instead. he wants to have everything, but can he? can he, like hobie, be a spiderman who is not defined by his tragedy, by his canon? on a meta sense, will the world reciprocate that?
im having a feeling that 'having two cakes' might possibly mean earth-1610 and earth-42 somehow merges into one so that there are two seperate earths with 'canon' events (death of an uncle and death of a police officer close to them), which ends up following thru with canon in the end... maybe. but at the same time, gwen's canon event was seemingly averted so its like.. how much of miguel's logic really follows through? but also will that mean tht it will become a world where both officer jeff and uncle aaron are alive, or both are dead, or just one, or... or maybe its not a complete 'merge', but because it's happened in a parallel world, it doesnt have to happen in the other world.... ????
like what could possibly happen with 42-miles.... im overflowing with anticipation. will he somehow become the spiderman for his world? will he become a vigilante without spider powers, if that isnt what he is already? (highly doubt this) will he team up with 1610-miles.. and how would he be convinced to?? i saw some reddit comments where imagine tht 42-miles pretend to be 1610-miles to fool some villains or whatever ahhhh i dont know. theres so many things they can do.. when i saw him i kept thinking 'kilometres immorales' over and over again in my head HES REAL!!! and mile's expression in the ending.. was it simply resignation after learning he wouldnt be let go? or was it an even deeper resignation of realizing what wouldve happened to him had uncle aaron not die.... there are so many questions grahhhh
also the deleted itsv scene where peter tells miles "You can’t think about saving the world, you have to think about saving one person." vs atsv miguel telling miles uh. something among the lines of "choosing to save one person vs the rest of the worlds" like brooooo i wish they kept in that first line that parallel wouldve been sick

Okay so, I have a need to scream to the void that is called tumblr. None of my friends are into dream smp so I can’t scream at them, so I have no other choice. I’m way too giddy to keep all this in.
Of course, all the usual CWs: manipulation, abuse, death, torture, y’all know how dark dream smp is nowadays.
Everything else is under the cut, because I don’t want to flood anyone’s dash with my rambling. Buckle up; this is a long one.
First of all, Quackity’s lore stream, a goddamn masterpiece! One to rival the election, 16th of October, Manberg vs Pogtopia, the Disc finale. There is so much to explore and so many potential routes the story could take from here. I can’t wait for the next lore stream!
But, I want to focus on something @angelvaleria pointed out in this post. That being that now we have two sides: ones who want c!Dream dead and ones who want c!Dream alive for his knowledge of revival. And if these two sides don’t have a conflict in the near future I’m going to scream.
c!Tommy, c!Tubbo and c!Ranboo want c!Dream dead no questions asked. Even when only thing he can do is revive people as he wishes, he is way too powerful. The three are already quite a powerhouse as they are (especially when c!Ranboo, one of the richest people on the server, is getting them gear) but I wouldn’t be surprised if they managed to recruit more people to their side.
On the other side we have c!Quackity and c!Sam, who want c!Dream alive, for now. c!Quackity wants the knowledge of revival and c!Sam seems to be totally ok with big Q torturing c!Dream. The sides are little unbalanced, c!Quackity isn’t that skilled of a fighter, so it would be just c!Sam againts the trio of minors. I’d say c!Bad and c!Ant could also join this side, they are prison guards after all (even if c!Bad would totally be againts torture, maybe c!Quackity can hide the fact from him). Or of course it is possible that there is just c!Sam, and only c!Ranboo fights him just to keep c!Tubbo and c!Tommy safe with their last canon lives. Who knows.
And what about c!Dream? Ok, so, hear me out. I’ve read a lot of posts about how traumatic and horrible and basically torture it has been for him to sit in that cell for a couple of months now. And yeah I kinda agree, but we have to recognize that cc!Dream hasn’t really given that kind of vibe for his character. Of course he seems bored and wants to get out, but he is still his smug self. There is very little evidence that he is a broken man. Of course it is possible that he doesn’t want to show any kind of weakness to his visitors, but again, who knows.
But what we can agree on is that c!Dream seems to be genuinely afraid of what c!Quackity can do to him. It would be very dissapointing, if c!Dream just acts the same way he always does when we see him next time. This, endless physical torture, will be the thing that breaks c!Dream. He wouldn’t spill the beans of course, he is too smart and knows that if he speaks he loses the only thing that gives him any power, and most likely his last life too. He knows nobody would revive him.
So, when the conflict actually happens c!Dream will not have much fight left in him, just living from one torture session to another, basically given up. He will be part of the conflict, but for once, not fighting on either side. He is just an object, a prize for the winning side to claim. Other side wants him dead and the other wants his torment to continue. He can just watch everything unfold from afar, not knowing which side to root for. Every outcome is bad for him.
Of course, we can’t forget that c!Dream always have some cards in his sleeves. First of all, c!Ranboo. Would it be too farfetched to assume that c!Dream can once again trigger c!Ranboo’s enderwalk state? Consider this, the trio of minors manage to defeat c!Sam and c!Quackity, finally getting change to end c!Dream. And then, c!Ranboo turns around, empty look in his eyes, pushing his friends away. c!Tommy and c!Tubbo can’t really do anything for they would be risking their last lives. Can you imagine all the drama, c!Tubbo’s heartbreak, c!Tommy telling him they should have never trusted c!Ranboo. And of course the guilt c!Ranboo must feel after all that. Delicious, delicious drama.
And, most importantly, c!Technoblade. He still owes c!Dream a favor, and this has been talked about so many times that we basically have Chekhov’s gun in a pig-hybrid form. There is no way c!Techno wouldn’t be involved. So, this is how I imagine how it could happen. c!Techno watches the prison grounds for a couple of days, realising that c!Quackity is visiting every day. So, what better way to get in than chugging an invisibility potion and sneaking in at the same time as c!Quackity. Invisibility and fire res potions for c!Dream and it will be an easy escape.
Bonus points if all this happens at the same time. While the prison guards are fighting against the minors, c!Techno could easily use the chaos as diversion. even more bonus points if he uses a splash potion of invisibility on the fighting group to cause EVEN MORE CHAOS.
I must say, that would be absolutely epic event for April 16th.
And just a little bonus treat from me to you. I really don’t think c!Dream would be Harpocrates, but what if he was? Just imagine the next Syndicate meeting. c!Ranboo walks in defeated after his efforts to get rid of c!Dream ended up resulting in his escape. c!Techno stands up to announce that Harpocrates will be joining the meeting today. And c!Ranboo watches in shock, in disbelief, as the man he tried to kill just days ago walks in and takes the seat right across of him.
There we go, got all that out of my system. I really should have chopped this into several smaller post, but oh well. Also I dont know if c! tags are needed as I started the post with /rp but at least there will be no confusion now. I hope.
I really should write a fanfic, huh?
Anyway, can’t wait to see what happens next!

Sam WInchester: The Reluctant Hero
When we wonder in frustration, as to why Sam seems to suffer more than Dean does, instead of being angry at a narative bias, or assuming the show runners hate Sam, take into consideration that Sam and Dean, though equally heroic, are different types of heros  Dean is a willing hero. He has been proud of his job as a hunter since he was young, even if sometimes he was bored with it, or would have liked to persue a career as a machanic. From what we see in flash backs, Dean was boasting “Im a hero!” since high school, where Sam just wanted to be like every other kid.  Sam’s first choice in life is not to be a hero. Not directly anyway. He was studying to become a lawyer.  Azazel said he was becoming a Tax Attorney, but Dean saw him as a Criminal Justice Attorney in What is and What Should Never Be, which I think is more fitting for Sam. The indirect hero that would get justice for the victims. He would make a wonderful psycholigist also. Dean would be a very good cop, or soldier, or first responder.  This is not to say Sam wouldnt run into a burning building to save a family, he most certainly would, but his interests seem to lie mostly in long term after care. So for Sam to be in the front line with Dean, is something he does because its the right thing, not because it’s his chosen life path (early life anyway. he has stated in his later life that he did chose this life for himself) and this makes him a reluctant hero. The problem with that though, is that in literature, the reluctant hero always suffers the most.
Its no argument that Dean suffers too. Both brothers have broken my heart on many occasions, but Sam’s suffering over any event, stretches far past the season he suffers it in. This is so we, the viewers, have an idea as to how much of a hardship Sam is willing to endure to save Dean and to save the world.  Sam and Dean both willingly went to Hell, but their experiences were greatly different, and unfolded on the show wildly unbalanced. Dean sold his soul for Sam, so Sam would live. He didnt want to go to Hell, but he did it willingly. in Dream a Little Dream, Dean said to his dream self, that he didnt deserve to go to Hell, and even though he made the choice on his own, I think we all feel like it’s a horrible punishment for a guy who just wanted his little brother to live. I know I hoped they could find a way to get him out of the deal, but unfortunately, he didnt. He stayed in Hell for 4 months, or 40 hell years. He was tortured by Alistair for 30 years until he became a torturer himself. Cas raised him out of Hell, completely whole, even old scars were gone, but we didnt know for a while that the memories were haunting him. How did we find out? Because he told Sam. He tearfully confessed to Sam on more than one occasion, what happened, what he did, what it felt like at the time and how it was hurting him then. What came of it is that he got to confront his torturer, and even though he couldnt kill him himelf, Sam killed him for him. Dean got justice.  Sam on the other hand, also willingly went to Hell to save the world, but he felt like he was mainly at fault for breaking the world in the first place, when it was expressed that it wasn’t only him, and he was completely unknowingly breaking it when he did. He obviously didnt want to go to Hell, but he felt it was the right thing to do. What he got for that though, was his soul in Hell, canonically, for 1.5 years, 180 Hell years. He was torured by Lucifer himself in the most brutal ways imaginable. Cas raised his body, soon after he went to the pit, but we arent given an exact amount of time, whether it be an hour or so, or a few weeks, we just know he was physically out for the majority of the year, but I can’t imagine 10 minutes in the cage with Lucifer is a picnic. However, he came back incomplete, without his soul, which endured unimaginable torture. If that’s not enough, while soulless, Sam did things he wasn’t proud of when he got his soul back, and suffered with this, Once he got his memories of Hell back, a whole new level of suffering began.  How was this handled? To our knowledge, he never told anyone the details of his Hell tour. All we know about it, was shown in flash backs and hallucinations, that ended up driving Sam insane. Sam was “fixed” by Cas, by simply shifting the pain to himself, not by Sam talking about it, or confronting his torturer, or anyone killing Lucifer.  Sam didnt get justice in any sense, and he still carries all of this with him. He has even had to work along side Lucifer to try to stop Amara. No one even brought this up, even though Sam had very recently been back to the cage and had to face Lucifer and the trauma all over again.  Season 13 and still Sam hasn’t been given justice or seen closure when Dean’s was answered in only a few episodes. How can we not see the imballance? Well, when we look at it as Sam is the long suffering Reluctant Hero, suck as it may, it makes more sense. It plays into the narrative that the pain piles on Sam, and Sam stuffs it down. We ourselves may forget this happens, if the show itself didn’t bring it up.  The case of Tracy Bell for example. A girl that pops up out of nowhere in 9x2 for no reason than to remind Sam that he let Lucifer out and people got killed. I know a bunch of you blame the writers of the episode for that, as though they hate Sam or Jared, but that was part of the Gardreel story. Something that the producers must have told the writers they wanted. “Bring something painful up from Sam’s past, so that when he feels good at the end of the episode, we can be reminded that theres an Angel healing him from the inside” is probably close to what was said in the meeting. We the viewers need to be reminded that Sam never lets things go, at the same time as he never really speaks of them either.  It took 13 seasons, but Dean confirms for us in 13x4 that Sam doesnt admit things or it makes them real, and then he has to deal with it. Sam even confirms it himself in 12X3 when he says he knows Mom is burying herself in hunting instead of dealing, through years of personal experience. Now that we understand this is part of Sam’s character, we can better understand why we dont get to see his emotional POV very often, and his traumas rarely get worked out.  The differences between Sam being the reluctant hero, and Dean being the willing hero, manifest in many ways.  Dean gets very antsy if its been a few days that they havent had a hunt to go on. Sam however, is content to stay home researching. Their short time of trying to live a domestic life with their girlfriends shows reluctant vs willing also. While Sam was with Amelia, he had nothing to do with hunting except reading the news paper and believing other hunters were taking care of things. He refused to tell Amelia about that part of his life. Dean didnt hunt, but he kept it at arms reach. He kept devils traps in the door ways, a rosary in water under the bed and a gun nearby, and he let Lisa know all about that part of his life, and even tried to live it and maintain a life with her.  Dean is the kind of guy who will show you every scar and tell you the details of how he got it, while Sam will hide his scars. Dean suffers when innocent life is lost, but he holds on to the fact that he’s saved more people than he’s hurt and it can help him make it day to day. Sam feels like he failed if he didnt save someone. This is precicely why Sam suffers the burdens of his wrongs for years,  and Dean doesnt. Dean did a lot of crap while he had the MoC but he hasnt had to visibly suffer from it after the fact. Sam however, is reminded of his poor choices for seasons after the fact. Now since its not a matter of Sam goes to jail for things and Dean doesn’t, we only need to realize its part of maintaining a character trait for us, so we dont forget that Sam never forgives himself and suffers for years over what he considers failures.  Now, this willingness vs reluctance shows in their relationship also. Im not going to try to prove one loves the other more, because I am convinced that Dean is #1 in Sam’s world and Sam is #1 in Dean’s world and they love each other as much as any two people can love each other (to steal from the mouth of JP) they both take care of each other, and neither had to be told to do so. Even when Sam was too little to actually take care of Dean, he still did the best he could by wanting to be with him, and giving him gifts. Dean didnt have to learn 100 ways to make mac and cheese, he did it because he wanted to make Sam happy. That being said, lets move on… Sam’s reluctance in their relationship, isnt that he loves Dean less, or doesn’t want to protect him, but his biggest fear is letting Dean down. He can save Dean’s life a million times but considers himself a failure if he let Dean down. Dean’s biggest fear however is Sam dying. He can let Sam down, he can piss him off, but if Sam isnt alive and well, Dean considers himself a failure. When Sam assumed Dean was dead in S8 and didnt look for him, he was going on a promise that he wouldnt look for him. Since we didnt get enough insight to Sam’s state of mind at the time, Im going to assume that Sam was crushed that Dean was dead, but for himself, it was more important, that he didnt let him down by breaking that promise. He saw how angry Dean was when Dean thought he made a deal that raised him from Hell, so he “knew” Dean would be disappointed if Sam looked for him now. Dean however, needs Sam to be alive, so he will risk Sam being disappointed and possibly hating him, as long as he’s alive.  So now in S11 its brought up again, that Sam didnt look for Dean in Purgatory, and Sam hadnt forgiven himself for it, its not the writers hating Sam/Jared, its showing us that Sam still hasnt gotten over letting Dean down. He’s a long suffering character, and doesnt see that he was justified in his actions, but instead blames himself for inaction. This fits right into Sam not finding a Win in a case where he couldnt save everyone. He knows he helps more people than he hurts, but the fact that he hurts people at all outweighs the good in his eyes.  There will be a time Im sure, and hopefully soon, given the events of the last 2 seasons, that Sam may collapse under all this weight. Maybe he will have some time to voice how badly things hurt him. But if he doesnt. try not to write it off as no one caring about his character, but understand his character feels like a burden if he unloads to people, even, and especially to Dean, who Im sure he believes has enough burden on his shoulders, without Sam sharing his. So try to be patient my friends. This would come out differently if it was a written story. The writer would be able to show us inside Sam’s head easier than they can this way. The only way into Sam’s head is through someone vocalizing it. If Sam does, then we dont see him burying things, if someone else does, it sometimes looks like hes being picked on for no reason…. but there is a good reason. It’s to keep his character consistant as the longsuffering reluctant hero. By @missjackil

So httyd came from the imagination of a person, so , everything comes from imagination planet, if there is something someone doesnt like about the shows and movies, change it in your imagination and it shall still be cannon, (cause its definitley not REAL with everything that reality comes with again NOTREAL) there, problems solved for everyone, even though i dont own the properties of httyd (though maybe anyone could buy them) since it has been shared with the world im sticking with this :D
For my perspective on why canon is canon regardless of inconsistencies or fandom preference, see here. Essentially, if an official source publishes the material, it is canon. Canon =/= consistency; canon = source (ALL stories have inconsistencies). It doesn’t matter if there are plot inconsistencies or different writers because it has been given the stamp of being official and being produced and distributed by an official source with official permission. Whatever we like or don’t like about it, it’s still official and we can’t take that away even if we’re not fans of it. It’s still official. It’s still canon.
I believe, friend, that you’ve already submitted this to other blogs to speak your thoughts. You might not need to broadcast to everyone by submitting to multiple blogs. ;) You have been heard already. I would please respectively ask that you don’t use my own blog as a bulletin board or loudspeaker. Take care and thanks!
I appreciate your attempt to placate yourself and other people who may not be fans of everything that appears in canon for the shows/movies/comics/books/etc. In a way, you have a very valid point: stories are stories, they’re imagination, and we as creative audience members can imagine new things to the story as we like. That is the power of fanfiction and fanart: we can rework something into new ways and experience the power of the story in a new, altered, or perhaps even improved form. We have the power of our own imagination to go new directions with the source material.
And it is a good thing not to get too worked up about some small nuance in a story that we’re not fans of. Fiction is fiction; if something doesn’t happen exactly the way we like it in a story, it doesn’t have to be a monumental deal because the story is not exactly “concrete” reality. There are some things we might not prefer in fiction that really aren’t worth having a row over, and it’s good to be mature, get past that, and imagine things as we would prefer them happen without getting into conflict or complaint.
However, there are several things to consider with this sort of argumentation. Since you did send your perspective to me, I hope it’s okay if I return to you why I personally wouldn’t use this as an optimal solution. Please, of course, continue to have fun celebrating what you love about the story! I just fear that this sort of phraseology can glaze over some very important things: namely, that the creators do have the right and power over their own stories, unlike audience members; that canon materials are the common ground in fandom and not our headcanons; and that sometimes it is important for fandom to be able to discuss the pros and cons of the material that legitimately exists without trying to erase it away in bliss.
There is a difference between the official creator’s imagination and the audiences’ imaginations
While it is true that a fictional work comes from one person’s imagination, and we also have the rights to imagination, they’re not on “equal planes” when it comes to one specific fictional work. The creator of the fiction is the person who has the authority to broadcast and provide the official story. The audience does not have this authority. One person creates canon. The other person does not and that is a concrete fact. That is reality in our real world.
Who does or does not create something is concrete reality; fiction might be made-up stories, but it doesn’t erase the concrete reality of who created what.
The point is that anyone who creates an official story directly through DreamWorks creates canon for the How to Train Your Dragon world. We as fans do not have official status and cannot create canon for the How to Train Your Dragon world. The most that we as unofficial fans can do is create fanwork and headcanons on the topic.
Consider if you were the author of a story that you put your heart and soul into. You know exactly how the characters operate, what happens, how the world works, how the story unfolds. Then one of your readers approached you and said, “No, you wrote that wrong. That can’t be canon.” That is, unfortunately, very disrespectful, and not very legitimate. You as the author have a right to what you have done. You’re the expert, you’re the creator, not them! The point is that the reader doesn’t have the right to tell you what is and isn’t canon in your own story. The author is the one and only maker of canon. Anyone telling you otherwise is wrong.
Now the consumer can go and imagine how the story goes however they like it. They’re free to do that and that’s cool. But there’s definitely a distinction between what the audience wants and what is concrete canon. No matter how much we say “I reject X from canon,” X is still canon. We can’t erase that away with words.
Where we can all be on the same plane is with the official material
Fans know official canon together. It’s widely accessed and it’s the thing that got us into the fandom in the first place. We’ll all be on the same plane and level of knowledge and understanding about the official material. We won’t, by contrast, have the same widespread level of shared familiarity or knowledge with headcanoned musings. Canon supersedes headcanon, even if the headcanon has things we would prefer! As you say, you don’t own the properties of HTTYD. The people who own the properties of HTTYD do, however, spread their material officially, and it’s something we all fans can acknowledge as something that exists within the fandom body. This is where we do have our legitimate, real, common ground.
Fiction has impact and we need to acknowledge what it is head on
Acknowledging canon is important because fiction does have impact. Fiction changes lives. Fiction imparts messages, morals, and more to us. Fiction can get in our heads what is the “norm” and what is “unusual,” what is preferable and what is socially scorned, what is cool and what is stupid, what is admirable and what is deplorable. Fiction might be stories with imagination, but it has very real impact.
The perpetuation of certain types of representations or stereotypes of people groups in fiction has consequence. It legitimately does affect how people perceive the concrete world around them. The telling of morals, of heroicism, has huge consequence, too.
If an official story has a really good message, or if an official story has some problems with representation or morals or meaning, then it’s important that we acknowledge it as it is - flaws and all. Ignoring what we don’t want and pretending it’s not in existence does not tackle the important issues of fiction. We don’t solve fandom and consumer concerns through drifting into headcanon. Any time we avoid issues, we fail to understand them to their fullest, and we certainly fail to solve them. Only by acknowledging the good and the bad as it actually stands can we legitimately get somewhere.
This dialogue is important.
I believe that constructive criticism is extraordinarily important. We should be able to analyze something with acuity and say, “Maybe how this story represents women isn’t ideal. Here are the things that are wrong with it.” In that way, we can all be edified with our dialogue and understand together what is going on, rather than ignoring it and saying, “I reject your reality and substitute it with my own.” We can’t disappear into our own imagination planet where everything is glib and happy. If we do that, and completely ignore what canon actually gives us, hoping to get a happy solution that way, then we might fail to engage in dialogue that is important to our understanding of what is good and what is bad in fiction, and how it impacts all the consumers who have experienced this shared canon fiction.
Respecting canon is respecting what started your fandom
I believe in level-headed constructive criticism in the right contexts, but I definitely don’t believe in whining. Complaining and trashing a story and being rude about something doesn’t reflect well on our character. It also doesn’t do good things for the fandom community. I hope that people who have been on my blog notice that I intentionally prefer to focus on the positive and celebrate the great aspects of the fandom. I don’t ignore or wave away serious problems, but I do show myself to be a respectful fan who shows what I love about my fandom and fandom materials.
I do believe that we can legitimately enjoy a story even if it has flaws. All stories have flaws. We as adults can respectfully acknowledge what isn’t perfect and at the same time celebrate what is legitimately good about the fiction. That does not mean endorsing what is bad or trying to justify things that are legitimately morally wrong. But in cases where a fandom canon has something benign that I wouldn’t prefer - say, who ends up hooking up with who - I can still respectfully acknowledge that event as canon reality because I respect the creators who gave the fandom to me. I’m not going to say, “That didn’t happen.” It did happen, and I am going to respect the fact that the creators are the ones who gave me the story I love in the first place. I’m not going to trash the creators for not writing my optimal story; I’m going to thank them for giving me their story, and acknowledge the fact that they wrote the story that they did.
I believe that we should give the creators the credit they are due: they made it, and their story isn’t “rejectable” or “not canon” in our own minds just because it’s not the story we would have told.
If we are fans of a material, we got drawn into the canon at some point and love it to some level. The canon material is what got us into the fandom in the first place. That’s why it’s called a fandom: we’re fans of that fiction. By then going in and hating on canon is counter to why we are in the fandom in the first place: to have fun with the canon we have been impacted by and enjoy. Trashing on the creators of the fiction material we’re fans for is a little… disconcerting.
So in summary…
1. As much as you can say everything comes from imagination planet, stories come from different imaginations. Who created the story is a real fact that isn’t imagination land. The creator(s) of the story is/are the maker(s) of the story. They are the legitimate authority over the story and only they create canon. People who provide official canon are canon. No matter how much we go into our own imagination lands, it doesn’t take away from the concrete reality that someone else created this story and characters and world.
2. The common ground of fans is the official source material. Not headcanons. We don’t all share the same headcanons, but we can all talk about the canon material with objectivity because it has been given to us officially.
3. In some areas that people have problems with canon, the issue is serious because it’s about something that impacts society. Going into imagination land and changing it there without confronting the issue means we don’t understand the issue in full and means we don’t solve the issue.
4. In the areas of canon that we just don’t prefer because they’re not our ideal story, we can imagine alternates, but we still have to acknowledge canon is canon. To whine and say “I reject your reality and substitute it with my own” just because the story doesn’t go as we want it comes at the cost of being disrespectful to the creators of the story we consume. We should be able to be respectful to the creators for giving us what they gave us rather than saying, “You didn’t write this right.”
I hope that we can all come together as fans and celebrate and enjoy the story for what it is rather than rejecting it simply because we don’t prefer some elements of it. The story is story. Canon is canon. The official sources are the official sources. We cannot change that.
But we can create headcanons.
We can create fanfictions and fanart and fan comics.
We can always go into our own imaginations, as you say, to a fun world of headcanons. Swim in your headcanons, have fun in them! They shall never be canon, but they can have the fun merits of imagination.
Take care, stay awesome, and have a wonderful day, friend.
