YOU KNOW WHAT I LOOOOVE ABOUT VARIAN AND HUGO?? That Hugo, for all he may act as this selfish sneaky little bastard is in his very essence the embodiment of the place he was born in, of the good of that blood, that he deep down does care for his people and for their dreams, all of Ingvarr but the people who mistreat them, his heart beats for them. Meanwhile Varian, fandom’s dearest, canonically does not care for the Capital AT ALL, his drive and his focus have always been his father and his village, he does not work for a illusion of a nation but instead for the community he grew up in (people who always had each other’s backs), his Corona started and ended on his village, the capital was nothing more than the path he took to reach the castle or their celebrations — and maybe for that, once the Crown turned its back on him (sorta) he ended up directing his fury to all of the capital, not just the “people above him” —, to make someone like that their royal engineer was truly one heck of a risky gamble for Corona.
