Request : Could you (if you don’t mind) do a fic where the reader is a Shelby Sister (closest to Thomas) and is gay. I don’t mind whether it is a coming out fic or one where she has a crush on the same lady Tommy is getting close to. (And in the end that lady chooses the reader)
prompt : none
Warnings : swearing, smoking, mentions of homophobia
Authors note : Y/N and Tommy would be around 22 (Tommy turning 23) in this, Ada 16, John 18, Arthur 26 etc etc
if you like my work and want to read more regular updates, here’s the link to my chapters of “child’s play”, a peaky blinders Shelby!sister Fanfiction on my main
Fate had tossed Y/N right smack into the middle of the Shelby family…. Technically the middle, at least. She was older than Ada and Finn and John, but younger than Thomas and Arthur. It was an even number of children, but technically her and her brother John shared the roll of middle child. But she was about four years older than him, which made her closest in age to Tommy, as there was barely twelve months separating the pair. Ten, to be exact. While Thomas was born in January, Y/N was born in November. They were what was called catholic twins (or Irish twins, Dutch twins, Scottish twins… there was many words for it). Two siblings born less than twelve months of one another, and Thomas and Y/N Shelby were born ten months from one another both in the year 1890; which made them the same age for five months.
What a chaotic bunch that they were. Always enforcing mayhem all across the city and never behaving themselves. Y/N, was the most misfit of them all as it seemed most days, because she stuck out like a sore thumb no matter how hard she tried otherwise. She was always…. different, and her family always assumed she would grow out of it by the time she was a teenager. But no, when she was a teenager Y/N had come to terms with what exactly was wrong with her. Although she viewed it as natural, the entire law and world insisted it wasn’t.
When she was fifteen years old, she had befriended a girl her own age by the name of Nancy McClougden. Even today, Y/N’s heart fluttered at the recollection of the girl who she hadn’t seen in years. You see, the problem began when Y/N realized that if she were a boy, she would be all over Nancy and be trying to woo her to the best of her abilities, and the problem escalated when Y/N realized that she didn’t want to have to be a boy to kiss Nancy. That she would kiss Nancy any day, if she would ask her to. By then, it was clear to the eldest Shelby girl what she was, and it was clear to her that no one could ever know.
And with being so close (in both age and relationships) with her brother, Thomas, that proved to be difficult as growing up the two came in a pair and were inseparable. Not to mention the fact he was a nosy bastard who always had his hand in other people’s business when he shouldn’t have.
One night, later in the evening, when everyone was in the garrison celebrating the new year of 1913, a situation occurred and was one that Y/N personally believed wouldn’t ever happen. Moments after everyone had shouted ‘happy new years’ as the clock struck twelve AM on the first of January with the year now 1913, the party had truly began. Loud talking and drinking that was accompanied by what was almost even louder music that played on a gramophone someone brought in. Y/N found herself seated at the crowded bar line with a woman roughly around her own age that had introduced herself as Isla, and of course, Y/N wasn’t just talking but she was rather blatantly flirting with the red haired woman who giggled along to the Shelby woman’s words and played along. It was going well, to say the least. That was, up until Y/N gave a small jolt of surprise as an arm fell around her shoulder. “Hello, Thomas.” She greeted her brother, a slight roll of her eyes coming his way as she took a sip of her drink.
“Why, Y/N, aren’t you going to introduce me to this pretty lady?” Her brother urged to set him up with another young lady that probably, just like most, wouldn’t last long. She would be around for a few weeks at best, because it was safe to say every Shelby man had, in lack of better terms, commitment issues.
Smiling with tight lips up at her barely elder brother, Y/N glanced back to the woman sitting in front of her. “Tom, this is Isla. Isla, this is my brother, Thomas.” She briefly introduced the two in order not to simply brush her brother off and seem catty over nothing. “But all you get is an introduction, Tommy. Her and I were having a private conversation that doesn’t need dropping in on.”
Isla laughed slightly at that, her round and rouged cheeks turned up at the apples as she smiled. It caused Y/N’s heart to soar and flutter as if she was a little schoolgirl again. She had come to discover that unless serious, Isla was capable at making everything lighthearted in a positive way. It was a relief, in y/n’s opinion to be truthful as it was a rare thing to see in Small Heath.
Barely nodding his head, Tommy casually gestured for the current bartender to fetch him a drink before speaking again. Y/N sighed, knowing there was no getting rid of him now, as he would be stealing away yet another girl who was just out of her grasp. “Ah, well, what is it you were speaking about?”
“Didn’t I just say that—“
“Horses.” Isla interrupted, not on purpose, but her and Y/N began to speak in union and the Shelby girl gave up her words rather easily. As soon as the word horses was spoken, she could see her brother’s ears perk up. There definitely was no getting rid of him now. “Y/N here was telling me about horses…. Or I suppose I more so asked about them. I understand that you work with horses, Mr. Shelby.”
“I shovel shit at the stables located in my uncle’s scrapyard, if that’s what you refer to.” He joked, and Isla had giggled at him which caused Y/N’s eyes to roll to heavily she was sure that they would stay jammed in the back of her skull. “Now… what is a lady like yourself doing in a place like Small Heath, in a pub like this one, and asking about horses on New Year’s Day?”
“Nothing special, truly…. I suppose I thought celebrating the New Years in a new environment would be the best way to start off the new year. I’m here with my sister, you see…. But I lost track of her awhile ago, I’m sure I’ll mean her again sooner or later.” Her reply was rather simple. “Besides, if I didn’t have the need for adventure, I wouldn’t have met Y/N tonight.”
The Shelby girl smiled at this, pleased with the fact that she made so far a good impression with the lady. But soon Tommy smirked as he looked over Isla. “And where might you be from, Isla?”
“Balsall Heath. Not far from here.”
He gave her that charming Shelby smirk, and offered her his hand, and it was in that moment Y/N had realized her brother may have won this battle. “Well, Isla from Balsall Heath, how would you like a drink? On me, of course.”
As the night passes on, Y/N had watched as her brother flirted and attempted to woo over Isla. The only thing she could do is sit and pout at the bar. When Isla had been dancing and laughing with her brother for what Y/N counted as the third time, it wasn’t long before the young woman’s little sister approached her; the sixteen year old linking arms with the elder of the pair, and leaning into whisper. “Think you could get me a drink? Aunt Polly has be watching me like a bleeding hawk all evening, and I think it’s only fair that I get at least one hard drink. It is new years after all, Y/N/N.”
“No, you don’t need a drink.” Y/N dismissed her and her wanting of alcohol. “You’re not drinking tonight. Don’t you remember how you got at Christmas after a few drinks? We’re not having that replay.” She reminded her younger sister, who was to her junior about only four or five years. “Besides, I saw John slip you a few glasses of champagne anyhow. You’ve had your share.” She added with a grin, and Ada simply groaned in annoyance before watching her blue eyes sister’s gaze drift back to the woman their brother was dancing and evidently flirting with smoothly yet obviously. The bloody Shelby charm was a blessing yet a curse depending on what side you fell on.
Ada’s dark eyebrows creased at this, and she looked back towards her elder sister. “Is something the matter? You’re sitting here pouting and gazing longingly at that lady Tom’s with. He steal your friend away from you or somethin’?” Naturally Ada assumed they were friends as they arrived together and hadn’t parted until Tommy swooped in.
Y/N grumbled at that, taking a sip of her drink. “Something like that, I s’pose….” She mumbled in reply, every word coming out of her laced with bitterness of the situation. But what was Y/N meant to do? She couldn’t exactly have told her brother to piss off because she was smitten over Isla. She could only imagine his reaction. Tommy would blink at her dumbly for a few moments before disowning her ass right then and there. Y/N would rather have allowed him to steal Isla from her for the night than have that happen.
Half an hour after everyone left the tiny New Years party at the Garrison pub, hanging around the extra half hour in order to regain their own acknowledgement of the real world; Y/N found herself walking home with her brother that night, both hanging onto each other for dear life as they tried to find their way back home in one piece while drunk at one in the morning. This wasn’t new to the pair, but also was one of the most traumatic things they do together every so often. Isla had left with her sister around ten minutes before them, meaning neither Shelby was victorious of bringing her somewheres alone; but with how drunk everyone had gotten, it was for the best.
Trying to support one another’s weight while venturing home, tripping over one another and nearly yelling at each other while speaking. One must remember that this was 1913…. And Thomas Shelby wasn’t currently the Thomas Shelby that was the fierce leader of the notorious Birmingham street gang. The peaky blinders were formed, but during these early days, to most people they were just a bunch of school boys trying to be men and out dick whoever they came across. “Oi, get offa me fucking toes, ya fucking wanker.” Y/N hissed at her partner in crime when he trampled her feet whilst trying to walk.
“Fucking walk straight, and maybe we won’t run into each other.” He simply said. “I swear, the only thing you’re good for is introducing me to ladies…. Though, that Isla tonight seemed rather stuck up. Took a few free drinks and a few dances, and then went straight back to chatting with you before her sister came and collected her to go home.”
“Here’s an idea, brother, maybe she wasn’t in to you.” Y/N laughed, soon noticing they stumbled upon number six of watery lane, where both of the siblings were relieved to find one of them still had house keys on them so that they wouldn’t have to wake everyone up by banging on the door. Y/N would have felt most sorry for poor little Finn, as the five year only always got cranky when woken up loudly. “Can’t always steal every woman from me, can ya? I’m gonna win some every once in a while, you know.”
“Eh? The fuck do you mean?” Tommy turned his nose up to her absurd words, and Y/N blinked through her drunkenness and caught her own mistake.
“What do I mean by what?” Y/N naturally played dumb on it, soon shushing her brother loudly as he stumbled inside the house and crashed into the hallway table; making a loud thud noise. “Be quiet, for fucks sake, if we wake Finn Polly is going to have our asses!” She hissed at him.
Rubbing his shin where he had roughly bashed it against the table, Tommy momentarily grumbled beneath his breath before glancing back at his barely younger sister. “I know what you said. So what the fuck do you mean by it?” Tommy re-asked. “You a homosexual now or something?” He nearly laughed at that, finding his own words and joke absolutely hilarious in this moment of drunkenness.
“A homosexual? Of course not, Thomas. Don’t be absurd now.” She was quick to brush away his words. “But if you’re flirting with a woman, like fuck I’ll be her friend because as soon as you forget about them, that would make it far too awkward to have a friendship.” She lied easily through her teeth.
“‘M just saying, Y/N.” He shrugged at his sister. “If you were, I’m just gonna remind you that that shit is illegal. Be careful.”
And that was the last of that for the night, as both weren’t in the right minds to discuss such things. Y/N had gone up to her room not long afterwards, and her brother passed out on their aunt’s sofa. The only remaining siblings living in watery lane had been Finn, Ada, Y/N and Thomas. Even though Thomas was on the verge of moving away, but Y/N always stayed to assist with her two youngest siblings in order that Polly didn’t have the burden of them. The next morning hit Y/N’s head felt like a bloody train had crashed into it in the middle of the night and she felt like her entire body had been as well. This is why she only tended to get drunk on special occasions such as the New Years; she hated the aftermath of being so intoxicated. But at least she wasn’t the type to be bent over a toilet spewing up her guts all day.
After forcing herself out of bed, Y/N ventured downstairs into the oddly quiet home where there surprisingly wasn’t much talking other than a slight mutter coming in from the kitchen; where she could pin the voices to belong to her aunt and two elder brothers. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, the chatting seemed to stop as she entered the kitchen. “G’morning, family.” She greeted before going straight to the cupboard where she knew her aunt kept teas and such, hoping that would help take away her booming headache.
“Good morning, Y/N.” Polly seemed to drawl her words whilst greeting her eldest niece, and her eyes shifted to her eldest nephews momentarily. “How’d you sleep?”
“Like a fuckin’ log.” Y/N replied, grabbing the still hot kettle in order to make her tea. “A log that got hit by two trains, because let me tell you, Aunt Pol, I have never felt worst in my entire life. This is the exact reason why I tend to be the sober one.”
“Well are you sober enough to answer a question?” Arthur had asked bluntly, and Polly could be heard hissing at him to shut up and be nice.
Turning back around to face the small portion of her family while sipping on her heavily sugared tea, Y/N’s dark eyebrow raised and she was soon to give a shrug of her shoulders. “I suppose so. It’s only a hangover, after all. I’m sure I’ve had worst, and if not I’m sure there’s worst to come.” Y/N said lightheartedly, as her hangovers always would hurt like a bitch but never lasted more than a few hours.
Then, out of nowhere before anyone else could utter a word, her eldest brother spoke again. “Are you a fucking homosexual?” This caused Y/N to snort into her drink out of surprise, and have a bit of it go up into her nose; causing her to sputter and cough.
“Arthur Shelby!” Their aunt hissed at him, and he simply held her hands up in defence for a brief moment.
Once Y/N had stopped sputtering and coughing over her tea that had just burnt her nostrils due to the fact she inhaled some, she quickly wiped her face with a dish towel before looking at her eldest brother in astonishment. “Pardon me?”
“You heard the question just fine based on that reaction.” Arthur gave a small roll of his eyes. “Tommy said—“
Immediately, she was set off like a firecracker; just like the ones that had been set off for the new years last night. “Tommy fucking said, eh?!” She hollered. “Tommy fucking said what exactly?!”
“Tommy said that when the pair of you two came stumbling home last you, you were yapping about something along the lines of not being eager to introduce every woman you meet to him because you’d like to win her over once in awhile.” Polly added in. “So, Y/N, it’s a yes or no answer. Which is it?”
Y/N scoffed defensively. “Oh yes, because if I was homosexual, I would just be jumping at the bit to say so and get my arse disowned and arrested.”
This time, Tommy’s eyebrow raised. “Who said shit about disowning?”
“How the fuck else is it supposed to go?! Are you fucking dense in the head, brother?” Y/N asked rhetorically with a snap in her voice. This was not how she wanted her hungover morning to be spent. There was a sacred time during a hangover where the said person was left alone and in peace, and so far Y/N was experiencing no peace of the sort. “If someone likes the same gender, it is frowned upon. Might not be something they can necessarily change about themselves and it’s still frowned upon. Do you know why? Because it’s fucking unnatural. It’s always been unnatural and the moment I were to say, yes I like women more then men, then I would be fucked.”
Throwing his hands up in exasperation, Arthur spoke, “Jesus fucking Christ, Y/N, we don’t give a fuck what gender you like!” He spoke with irritation seeping from his gruff voice. “It was just a bleedin’ question out of curiosity!”
When she noticed Arthur’s irritation over the simple fact she was making a scene about it, as well as Polly’s growing smirk that she attempted to hide with her blue and white tea cup as she took a sip of the drink, plus Tommy’s unbothered stature as he leaned against the back cabinet whilst smoking a partially smoked cigarette, Y/N’s mouth snapped shut as she was just left blinking at the three family members. “Repeat that?” She asked.
“Look, is it unnatural? Sure it is. Aint exactly the most common thing in the world… You could get in real shit for it.” Tommy spoke up, shrugging his shoulders. “But you’re of fucking sister, Y/N. You were our sister yesterday, the day before that. Last month. Last year. You’re out fucking sister, and that isn’t about to change because of somethin’ like this. Ya hear me?”
Y/N ran up to her brother and hugged him incredibly tight at that. Probably in a tighter embrace than she had ever put someone in before. Tommy could only chuckle a bit and hug her back. “So that all it took, eh?” Y/N asked the room while pulling away from her elder brother, standing beside him with his arm over her shoulders, wiping tears from her eyes before they even had the chance to fall. “Just one slip of words while I was drunk?”
Polly gave an amused sigh of laughter before going back to reading the newsprint she had in front of her. “Oh no, dear, we’ve been suspecting things ever since Nancy McClougden.”

Summary: Charlie's 10th birthday finds itself the center of a showdown between Thomas and his ex-wife over the new woman in his life.
[Masterlist] [Taglist Form] [Join my 200 followers celebration!]
Being a friend of the Shelby's- didn’t matter how close or distant- was like walking around with a target on your back. But you didn’t mind. As much violence and chaos that the family attracts, and as much as they try to have power over each other, there was a mutual love and respect between every Shelby that you hadn’t seen anywhere else. For example, when Polly found out Tommy had hidden crucial information, she was pissed; but also proud. It was a bit concerning, if you were going to be honest. Even Grace was kept in the loop after the divorce. Once a Shelby, always a Shelby, you supposed. Grace wasn’t involved in the family business at all, but she and the family met occasionally. Although, as time passed on, it was mostly so Charlie could spend time with his father. Grace was now remarried and her visits were far and in between. She drifted apart from all the Shelbys- not that they minded, as her betrayal was still in their minds all those years later. Thomas started to move on from her as well, now very much used to Grace not being a part of his day-to-day life. Today was the day that Grace and Charlie were making a rare visit to the Arrow House for his 10th birthday. Thomas postponed all of his meetings for the entire week to make time for his son, an action that made you smile when you heard Tom tell his clients of his absence. And they call him heartless, you had laughed to yourself. “Ada! How are you doing!” you said, hugging your best friend before walking into the Arrow House. You took off your coat and hung it on the hook next to the door. “Oh I’m doing great sweetheart,” she said. “Auntie Y/NNNNNN!” you heard a little boy’s voice yell from the stairs. The pitter-patter of their feet running across the wooden floor echoed through the large room and made you chuckle. “Hello, Karl!” you kneeled on your knees and opened your arms for Karl, who ran into them and almost made you topple over. “Someone’s excited to see me!” You squeezed him lightly, resting your cheek on his head. You pulled away from him and reached into your purse, grabbing a chocolate bar that you had bought for Karl. “I got you something!” Karl smiled, his cute crooked teeth on display. “Thank you!” He grabbed the bar from your hand and started unwrapping it, running away from you and towards the living room. “Uncle Arthur, look what Auntie Y/N gave me!” he yelled. “What did I say about the chocolate?” Ada chided you. You laughed. “I couldn’t help it Ada,” you defended yourself. “He’s too adorable to not spoil.” In the background, you heard Karl laugh loudly. “You can’t have any Uncle Arthur, it’s for me!” You chuckled and shook your head, looking down at the floor in mock exasperation. The Arrow House would be nothing without the echoes of Karl’s screams bouncing around the walls from time to time. Even Thomas seemed to brighten up a bit more whenever Karl and Ada visited. You supposed it was because his nephew reminded him of his own son that he barely got to see. At the thought of Charlie, you looked up to Ada. “When are Charlie and Grace showing up?” Ada shrugged. “They should be here in a couple of minutes. Why don’t we head to the living room? Tommy bought a shit ton of food for Charlie so we might be able to steal a bit.” _______________________________________________________________________________________ You and Ada made your way into the living room and smiled at the exquisite birthday decorations. There were balloons of every color bunched up every couple of feet around the room, a large birthday banner hanging proud and true on the wall across from the fireplace. “Hello, Y/N. Ada,” Tom said from where he sat on the couch, his elbows on his knees. You smiled at him. “Thomas.” Tom smirked slightly- which was a fucking bright-ass grin when it came to Thomas. “We’ve been over the ‘Thomas’ shit, Y/n/n,” he said, quirking his brow. You chuckled. “We have,” you said. “Tom. ‘S just fun to be all fucking formal.” Tom pat the spot on the couch next to him while Ada left your side, sensing that you two wanted some
time alone. You walked over to Tom and sat next to him. “You excited?” Thomas nodded, his blue eyes brightening slightly. “I hardly get to see Charles anymore. You bet your ass I’m spoiling me boy when he’s here,” he joked. You laughed. “I’m sure Charlie’s going to like all of this,” you gestured to the decorations around you. “Oh! Before I forget! Where should I put this?” You reached into your purse and pulled out a folded mancala board that Charlie had begged you for the last time he visited. Thomas smiled and took the board from you, leaning down and sliding it under the couch. “We’re going to open presents after cake, so just remember to pick it back up.” From there, you and Thomas began to talk about the family business. Unlike with Grace, Thomas found himself consulting you on many decisions that he made. You weren’t directly involved but your advice was greatly appreciated by the family. Especially since Thomas wanted to get into politics- a field that you knew well because your father ran for MP multiple times before his death- your advice on what not to do gave him valuable insight on how to maintain a favorable public image. “I know your past is something that can’t be erased,” you said in response to Tom’s concerns about the subject. “But that doesn’t mean it can’t be hidden. Or at least left ambiguous enough that people can’t ask the right questions. You keep the public from asking the right questions, and you make sure they can never find the answers.” “It’s a bit unnerving that you know this,” Tom noted, a smirk on his face. In truth, he was impressed. Your knowledge of politics was quite extensive considering your father tried to keep you away from it for most of your life. But you knew how to eavesdrop and read gossip, and so you gained a wealth of knowledge about politics. You laughed. “You’re acting like you don’t already know this.” Thomas took a drag of his cigarette and chuckled. “You got me there.” Your conversation was interrupted by the distinct shrill of the doorbell. Tom perked up and smiled. “Charles is here!” He practically jumped up from his seat on the couch and made his way to the hall. You followed him to the hall, beckoning Karl, Ada, and Arthur- who had been quietly eating food in the corner, thinking Tom hadn’t noticed- to come with you. You and the group walked into the hall to the sight of Thomas laughing and picking up Charlie in his arms and bouncing him up and down, making his son giggle. “Happy birthday Charlie!” you exclaimed, clapping. Arthur, Karl, Ada- and John and Polly, who had been talking in the hall after you arrived- clapped and joined in wishing Charlie a happy birthday. Charlie and Karl shared a hug that resulted in you awing. You looked at Grace and smiled. “Welcome, Grace,” you greeted her respectfully. Grace simply nodded at you and took off her coat. Turning around to put her coat on the coat hooks next to the door, she gasped lightly in shock when she saw your coat resting next to Tom’s. “Whose coat is this?” she asked casually. You apologized profusely. “It’s mine, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to impose. I can find a different place for it-” Thomas waved his hand nonchalantly. “Oh, no need. You’re not imposing, Y/n/n.” You blushed slightly. “Frances can take your coat, Grace. I trust you remember who she is?” He jabbed at her lightly. Grace huffed and nodded. “Alright.” The tension between Tom and Grace was palpable and made everyone make excuses to leave the room. You left as well, saying something about wanting to play around with Karl and Charlie. You knew things were bad between Thomas and Grace. So bad, in fact, that Tom had approached her with a divorce. Tom was many things, but he wasn’t the type of person to reach for a divorce. He believed that marriage lasted for life. But after Tom’s and Grace’s arguments over his ambitions and dreams started to grow from skirmishes to screaming matches littered with threats, Thomas had enough. He told you the night that he decided to divorce Grace that he didn’t want to spend his life with a woman
that didn’t support his political and business ambitions. You found yourself sympathizing with both of them. You understood Grace’s concerns about the target that would always be on her and Charlie’s back because of Thomas’s ambition. But you also understood Thomas’s argument that his ambitions were also the thing that would provide his family with more opportunities than he had. Thomas’s goals were a double-edged sword. Although, Grace had become quite cold to Thomas in retaliation for the divorce, often sending him and his family veiled insults. So you didn’t feel much remorse for her when Tom made barbed comments like the one made in the hall. You sighed while watching Karl and Charlie play. It was going to be a long party. _______________________________________________________________________________________ All of you were eating cake, you talking with Polly about some gossip that you heard when going shopping for groceries. “Apparently Brandon was just using her for her status,” you said, licking the frosting off of your fork. “But then Brandon caught Melissa sleeping with her boss-” “No fucking way!” Polly interrupted, putting her plate down and gasping. “How the hell do these things happen to people!” You laughed. “I know right! My life is boring in comparison- and I hang out with you insane idiots!” “Hey!” John said from across the table, his mouth full of cake. “We’re not that bad!” “Speak for yourself,” Ada muttered from next to her brother, cringing when John stuck his cake-covered tongue out at her. “Honestly, Y/N,” Grace’s refined voice reverberated through the dining room, “You shouldn’t be gossiping this much. It’s a boring pastime.” You quirked your brow. “I’m sorry?” “Oh it’s alright, I understand that some people have nothing better to talk about. I’m just saying, gossip signals a bland personality and I’m sure you don’t have that, hm?” Grace’s implied message was clear. You sat in silence for a moment, surprised. “No?” you said, going along with whatever Grace said. In all honesty, you didn’t care what Grace thought of you. She barely visited enough for you to give a shit. But apparently, Tom didn’t want to let it slide. “Look, Grace, it’s not a big deal to gossip, alright? You’d be a big fucking hypocrite telling Y/n/n not to gossip when pretty much everything you talked about was who was fuckin’ who-” “Thomas!” Grace chided. “What? If you’re going to walk in here and criticize how Y/n/n spends their time, you can fuck off, alright? I don’t need some posh stuck-up woman in me house. So either behave yourself and let Charlie have a good birthday,” Thomas threatened, “Or get out of me house and have fun on the streets for a week.” “You’d let your own son live on the streets for a week?” Grace asked, shocked. “My threat regards only you. Charles is me blood- you make me see blood.” Grace looked down at her plate and picked up her fork and ate her cake again. Tom took that as an agreement to get along with everyone and started eating again as well. You were just thankful that you had sent Karl and Charlie to play upstairs. But regardless of the tense situation, a smile graced your face at the immediacy that Tom defended you with. _______________________________________________________________________________________ “Hey,” you tapped Thomas’s shoulder when you both found yourselves alone in the back room. “Thank you for defending me.” Tom nodded and smiled slightly. “Of course.” “I mean it. No one really defends me so I really appreciate it. Especially since it’s Grace.” Tommy’s brows raised slightly at that comment. “What do you mean?” You shrugged, looking anywhere but at Tom. “I mean, she was the woman that made you the person you used to be before France. I understand there’s some bad blood between you two now, but she’s still special to you.” Tom hummed and walked closer to you, stopping at around 2 feet away from you. “So are you, you know. You’re special to me.” You smiled. “You’re special to me, too.” Thomas’s hand cupped your cheek lightly, his thumb stroking
back and forth. A flush made its way to your cheeks and you smiled shyly at Tom. There was always some unspoken bond between the two of you that you danced around. You were always scared that it was too early after his divorce, but with the way that he was looking at you, he probably got over it a while ago. You don’t know who leaned forward first, but one second later your mouths were connected in a feverish kiss. Tom’s hands were traveling places, touching parts of your body that you caught him eyeing from time to time. Your hands rested against his chest and reveled in the feeling of his heart thumping against his chest as erratically as yours. So you had the same effect on him as he did on you. The kiss was a good indicator of that, but it was nice to have reassurance. Tom pulled away and rested his forehead on yours. “Fuck, I’ve wanted to do that for months now,” Tom confessed. You smiled, pecking him on the lips. “So have I,” you replied, pulling his mouth back to yours.

Hi!! I just came across your blog and love it! Could I request something where you get hurt by a rivaling gang and Tommy freaks out?
stolen | t.s.
Business wasn’t going as great as usual lately and Thomas could feel himself slowly slipping on the edge of insanity. A rival gang was apparently intending to take over Birmingham which, until then, had always been Shelby’s territory and even if he would never admit it, the man was loosing confidence regarding his positions.
However, he had sworn himself that he would never put you in the confidence in fear to worry you even more that you already were, no matter how bad things could get. But, one thing he had apparently failed to remember was that the easiest way to get to a man’s head wasn’t to attack him directly - but instead, hurt his dearest ones.
And so, that’s what the irish rival gang meticulously planned to do. In fact, you had uknowingly been spied on all week, from the minute you left the house to go run some errands to the moment you came home after a night out at the Garrisson with some friends. They had even managed to do it without raising any suspicion among the coppers Tommy had hired to protect you in his absence.
They wanted every single little thing the Shelby’s owned but also, to have the pleasure to ruin the infamous Thomas Shelby’s reputation. It had been such a shame that his wedding had been shown in the medias because then, they knew exactly who to aim at in order to get to the man’s head.
One night, you had informed your husband that you wouldn’t be home given that Ada had invited you to join her and Lizzie at the pub for a girls night and he hadn’t said anything since he too, had a business meeting planned.
An hour later, you walked down the stairs under Tommy’s attentive gaze and walked up to him. "I’m going to be even more hated on that I already am with you walking around the town looking like that, doll," he complimented you jokingly, as he took one of your hand in order to make you spin to show off your dress to him. "Well, well. I’d better not keep you from going partying, hadn’t I?"
You smiled and tilted your head to the side as you slid your hand to the back of his head, "Don’t worry honey, you’ll meet me later and have me all to yourself then."
"Mmh, mmh," he mumbled, satisfied before you could go to kiss him softly.
You had now been dancing for more than two hours with your friends when you felt like it had been enough and that it was time to come home to Tommy.
"Alright girls, I think I’ve done my part, I’m exhausted," you shouted loud enough for Lizzie and Ada to hear, who were by then drunk and still eager to dance some more. Ignoring Ada’s complaints and attempts to make you stay a bit longer, you grabbed her by the waist and kissed her cheek before doing the same to Lizzie. "Keep an eye on her and make sure that she doesn’t bring anyone home along with her," you asked her lightly while glancing at your drunk sister-in-law who was dangerously eyeing a gentleman in the distance.
Giving one last encouraging smile to Lizzie, you turned on your heels and exited the loud pub. You figured that some fresh air wouldn’t hurt you given that you had been breathing cigar smoke all night long.
After a few minutes of walking in the cold and dark streets of Birmingham, you felt a presence behind you which you decided to brush off at first, blaming it on the alcohol you had consumed in not so reasonable quantities. But, time was passing by and the presence wouldn’t disappear. Worse, you could hear footsteps which confirmed that you were being followed. Your heart was now beating faster as you were trying your best to remain calm but also find a way to get home as soon and safely as possible.
Hurrying a bit, you threw and eye behind yourself. Mistake.
"Tss, tss. Your husband never told you to not walk the streets alone at night? Didn’t he tell you that someone might take you?" the voice took you off guard and made you jump slightly. Unfortunately, it also made you freeze which gave the man enough time to wrap his arms around you in full force and drag you down an alley, where a car was parked.
Next thing you knew, a cloth was wrapped around your head to cover your eyes and another around your mouth to keep you from screaming for help any longer, "Enough, enough, God I hate it when you women scream." That remark alone brought anger in you which hadn’t resurfaced in a long time but this wasn’t the main focus at the moment. "There. Now you’ll shut up."
You then felt the car start moving to an unknown location and hoped that by now, Tommy had been noticed of your disappearance.
Indeed, a man who had worked for Tommy in the past had seen you get dragged into the alley and thought that it would be best for his life to notice his former boss.
"Whisky?" The business man asked Tommy who was still reading a twelve pages long contract, "Mh, sure but that’ll be my last, I’ve got someone to come home too and I doubt she’ll be pleased-"
"Tommy! They took her," stormed in Arthur which made the man miss the glass by an inch and spill the liquid on some papers. Tommy didn’t think twice and immediately got up.
He walked out of the office in no time, making his way to his car but Arthur stopped him. "Tommy, wait!"
"What?" his brother snapped loudly as he turned to face him. "They saw her get dragged in a car but don’t know where they headed," Arthur tried to explain as clearly as possible as to not frighten his brother any more. Tommy looked straight in Arthurs eyes, unable to form a coherent sentence. He clenched his jaw as to keep himself from lashing out on his innocent brother and took one deep breath. "Start from the beginning, would ya?"
Arthur then proceeded to repeat every information he had been told and made sure to not forget any. In the meantime, the men who took you had brought you to a basement which smelled like mold and humidity. You could hear them almost celebrating in advance but also preparing their actions once Tommy and his men would come to your rescue. "Do you know that Tommy will blow you brains out the second he comes in, right?"
Of course, you had to open your pretty mouth, you thought right after receiving a harsh smack on your cheek which did, bring some sense back in your brain at last. By the next hour, a dark red would surely paint this side of your face and take such an annoying amount of time to cover up.
You were ready to insult the man’s entire bloodline but got cut off by gunshots which made you scream in shock, since your eyes were covered and therefore prevented you from seeing anyone coming.
You didn’t know who had shot, who was now laying lifeless on the ground nor if whether it was good news for you or not. But, your worries faded away the second you felt two familiar hands holding the side of your face - which made you wince in pain - and a cigarette-scented breath you knew oh-so-very-well.
"Thank God you’re okay," Tommy hushed as he hurrily took the cloths out of your mouth and away from your eyes. "Tommy," you let out in relief.
"I got so fucking worried. I’m sorry you had to be-" excuses were flowing out of his mouth as quickly as they could, surely as a way to cope with everything he was feeling at that moment but you cut him, saying "I love you." This made him come back to his senses and soften up, "So do I," he whispered before leaning in to plant a kiss on your cold lips.
He stayed kneeling on the ground for another minute as he examined your face to see how badly the men had hurt you. "I should’ve tortured this son of a bitch," Tommy grunted as he glanced at the man he had just shot a few moments ago and whose blood was progressively painting the floor a dark red.
But, you grabbed his face with both hands to force him to look at you. His hands came to hold your waist tightly. "Babe, I’m okay now. You already shot him, the man’s dead and so are the others so let’s just leave, please? I don’t want to spend another minute in this shithole."
Tommy chuckled, exhausted but also amused to see that even after what had just happened to you, you still found a way to be whiny about it. "Alright, - he said as he tapped your hips before getting up -, let’s get you home and cleaned up."
"Yes, please."
okay so this was my first one-shot in a very first time.. i really hope that you guys liked it :/

Hey! Can you write a tommyxreader where they get arranged marriage for a deal with a rival gang. And the first time they sleep together is after tommy loses his shit seeing someone flirt with her and can’t control himself
Thank you for requesting this! Hope you like it ♥️♥️
In holy matrimony
Warnings: smut, swearing, arranged marriage, sleazy men at the bar, the entire FIC not being proof read so maybe some questionable autocorrect?
“You may now kiss the bride,”
You gulped as your new husband brushed his lips against yours as everyone clapped. You blushed prettily and slid your arm into his as he led you back down the aisle. He hardly looked at you, hardly spoke to you, and when the party drew to a close, he didn’t carry you to his room, bridal style. He asked his maids to show you the way while he cleaned up some business with your brother, and did not return until you were fast asleep under the covers. The next morning when you woke up, he was just leaving the room.
For the first three months of your marriage, you barely saw one another, stuck at Arrow House while he toed and froed between Small Heath and London. The maids whispered and gossiped about your passionless marriage as you played with Charlie, reading him stories and singing to him to get him to sleep. One night he called you mummy. You cried yourself to sleep that night. He saw you as a mother, but no matter what you did, you couldn’t get your husband to see you as a wife.
It was a Friday, and your sister in law had insisted that Tommy bring you to Small Heath to go to the garrison- “She’s family, Tom. She’s your wife, bloody treat her like it,”
You were sat in the side room, nursing gin and tonic while Tommy smoked. The silence was uncomfortable and no one knew quite what to say. You were a fair bit younger than Tommy, in your early 20s, and you were sure his brothers knew he barely slept in the same room. Gulping, you rested your hand on Tommy’s knee, murmuring “I’m just going to get some more tonic in this,” you murmured, standing up and leaving the room before he could tell you to just use the hatch.
You waited at the bar behind a load of men, trying to get the barman’s attention to no avail, constantly getting shoved to the back of the queue every time you were next in line. When you finally got to the front and ordered your drink, you felt someone groping your arse. you gulped as he leaned into your ear. “Let me buy that for you, darlin’”
“Er...no thank you, Sir,” you murmured, trying to shift to the side. “My drinks are on the house,”
“I bet they are, a hot little thing like you eh? Bet you make such pretty noises with that soft little voice, huh?”
“Sir, I’m actually married-”
“ah, you won't mind me fucking you into next week, love, and I’m sure your husband won’t mind, and even if he does, he doesn’t need to know, yeah?”
“Actually he does mind, and he does need to know,”
You had never been so glad to hear the low voice of your husband. instantly you hurried to him, leaving your drink at the bar. Subconsciously, you slid your arm into his, the same way you had done on your wedding night. Feeling your small arm tremble in the crook of his elbow set something alight in Tommy, and he announced, quite loudly to the rest of the pub “Any of you fuckers touch my wife, I swear to god I will throw you in the cut,” he walked you back into the side room and grabbed his coat. “I’m taking my wife home,” he said.
“Will you be coming back, Tom?” Arthur called as the door slammed.
“No... I don't think he will. He has that look in his eye,” Ada smirked. “Looks like he’s gonna acknowledge the fact that he’s married a lovely young woman,”
“Only took him three months to bloody consummate it!”
****
“Mr Shelby, I know you don’t love me... you don't have to... consummate this marriage, m-my brother said you’d probably call it off once you sorted the business and that’s why you wouldn’t have me...”
“I’m not Mr Shelby to you. I’m Tommy. And I finished the business with your brother on our wedding night,”
“But why didn’t you sleep with me... why have you just ignored me for three months?” you whispered, sitting down on the edge of the bed. “We’ve never been together and yet I miss you,”
He sighed, rubbing his face. “You... You’ve got to understand, YN... I’m over ten years your senior,”
“I don’t care,” you mumbled, but he still carried on.
“I’m over ten years your senior, you’re young, gentle, good, caring...”
“Listen to me! I don’t care that you're older than me,” you blushed when he stared at you but carried on. “I don’t care, alright! You made me feel safe tonight when that man was feeling me up. I’ve grown up around my brother’s gangsters and criminals making sure I don’t get attacked, but I’ve never felt as safe as when you... took my arm,” you looked at the ground. “You make me feel protected and I-I think I love you. You don’t have to say it back, or do anything, not if you don't mean it-”
He was kissing you, cupping your cheeks in both his hands, his lips pressed firmly against yours. He pulled away and pressed his forehead to yours. “I think I love you too,” he murmured. “I’m starting to... to love you...”
You gulped as you wrapped your arms around his neck and leaned to kiss him gently, testing the waters, sighing gently as he deepened the kiss. “Shall we consummate this marriage, Tommy?” You murmured and he groaned softly against your lips, lifting you up, hands squeezing your buttocks. “Oh god yes,” he groaned, laying you down slowly.
He trailed soft kisses down your throat, running his hands up your body and hitching your dress further up your thighs each time his hands went up. You sighed, arching your back and stroking his cropped hair. “Tommy... I’ve never done... I’m... ive never been...” you whispered, panting.
“You’re a virgin?” He murmured, stilling his movements. For a moment you thought he’d leave you again, but your worries were quashed when he pressed a soft kiss to your lips. “Alright, love,” he whispered, before kneeling, slowly unclipping and rolling each stocking down, kissing every inch of newly revealed flesh as he went. You sighed softly, stroking his hair gently, but gasped when his deft fingers skittered over the delicate skin of the inside of your thighs. Fingers twitching, you lifted your dress up and over your hips, undoing the button at the bavk and slinging it to the side. Tommy groaned at the sight of you in your silk slip and knickers. He crooked your thigh, throwing your leg over his shoulder as he kissed and sucked at the inside of your thighs. You whined at the curious mixture of suction and the tickling of his tongue, writhing your hips at these new sensations.
When Tommy pressed his thumb to your clothed clit you nearly jumped off the bed, spreading your legs a little wider and arching your back, gasping. He smirked up at you as he rubbed slow, tight circles, your underwear causing a delicious burning friction. You whimpered, clutching onto the bedsheets as your hips twisted, an unfamiliar tension coiling in your stomach. Thighs quivering, you called Tommy’s name, but he simply said “let it happen, YN,” pressing just that little bit harder. Waves of pleasure washed over your thrashing body as you moaned, biting your hand you quiet yourself. A few moments later, Tommy resurfaced, smiling gently at you as you looked at him with hazy, dazed eyes. He grinned when you reached for him and he fell next to you, rubbing your sides soothingly. “D-does that always happen?” You asked, thighs still twitching slightly.
Tommy grinned boyishly and caressed you’re cheek, pushing a stray strand of hair out of your face. “If a man knows what he’s doing,” he said, the corners of his mouth tugging into a slight smirk. You giggled, blushing ever so prettily, stroking a finger over his buttons absentmindedly. “You want this off, YN?” He asked, gesturing to his waistcoat.
“Yes please. Your shirt too. And your trousers. I want it all off, mine too,” you whispered, sitting up a little. He grinned, sitting up with you and together you managed to undo all of his buttons and strip him down to his underwear. You hummed, kissing him deeply as you spread your palms over his bare chest, tracing his tattoo and grasping his strong back. You pulled away from him and, taking a deep breath, you got off the bed, standing before him as he lay propped on his elbows, and lifted your slip up and over your head. He palmed his cocked as you did, and his breath caught in his throat when you unclipped your bra and cast it aside. You then bent over, sliding your knickers and garter belt down your thighs, kicking them away. You blushed and stood with one hand across your tummy gripping your other arm as Tommy’s eyes scanned you up and down, from the swell of your breasts to the pert peaks of your nipples, the soft flesh of your tummy, hips and thighs, before finally, settling on the curls between your legs.
He cleared his throat and you saw his Adam’s apple bob. “Fucking hell... come here, love,” he said, voice barely more than a hoarse whisper as you crawled over to him, long hair falling over your shoulders. You looked at his tented boxers and licked your lips, before looking back to his eyes. “Be my guest, love,” he rasped. You grinned, and slid his underwear off, giving him a lovely view of your rear as you freed the, from his ankles. You trailed one finger up the vein pulsing on the underside of his heavy shaft, breath coming in little pants as his thighs tensed. Watching his face, eyes fixed to his, you slowly wrapped your hand around him and pumped his cock languidly, eyes lidded with desire. He grunted and grabbed your chin, breaking your focus. “Fucking... YN... I need you love,” he said, almost pleadingly.
“I’m all yours,” you whispered, pressing your lips to his. He groaned and pushed you onto your back, and you gladly cradled him between your thighs as he kissed you hard, his cock leaking warm sticky precum onto your bruised inner thigh. “Please...” you moaned out, nipping his lip experimentally. He groaned lowly, and you felt the vibration running through his chest as he lined his cock of with you. He pushed the tip in, stopping when he felt resistense.
“This’ll sting, just for a bit, okay, YN?” He murmured into your shoulder. “But id you wanna stop, you’re to tell me, understand,” you nodded, already panting. Your eyes screwed shut as you felt him push through your barrier and you pushed your face into his neck, thighs clenching a little tighter around his hips. He grunted slightly, pushing in until he had no more to give, before waiting for you to tell him to move. When you bucked your hips up slowly to meet his, he groaned and together, you settled into a slow rhythm, every inch of skin touching one another. You locked your ankles behind him, using your heels to dig into his back and pull him closer, deeper, impossibly so. You just felt so... full. Tommy Shelby was clouding your every sense and you were quickly becoming addicted, undulating your body to grind your nipples against his chest, your clit against his pelvis, and your innermost pleasure points against his pulsing length.
You felt that coiling pressure in your stomach from earlier and whimpered “Tommy,- Tom... Ah! Tommy, I’m-I’m-Ah!” You moaned desperately, trying to find a word for the immense pleasure he was churning deep within you. Your inner walls clenched tight around him as a deeper, more intense pleasure flooded every nerve of your being as you moaned his name loudly, pressing your lips to his in a sloppy, passionate kiss. Feeling you grip his cock, he moaned into your mouth, and with a few final frantic thrusts, he spilled inside you, pumping your womb full of his essence, holding you close as you rode out your highs.
Practically boneless, you lay under the covers, snuggled into Tommy’s side, your fingers absentmindedly tracing the Romani sun rising on his chest as he smoked. You sighed happily, tucking your head into the crook of his shoulder, kissing the available skin gently. He laughed slightly. “You up for another round, love?” He teased. You giggled and shook your head.
“No... not tonight,” you said, yawning softly. “Tomorrow morning maybe- you’ll still be here tomorrow?” You asked quickly. He stubbed out his cigarette and kissed your forehead.
“Of course I will be. Christ, I’d happily lay in this bed all day long if you’d let me,” he grins.
“Maybe I would,” you giggled and looked up at him. “I think... I think this marriage will work out fine, Tommy,” you said gently, nuzzling into his chest.
He stroked your hair gently. “You know what, YN? I reckon it will too,”

Comfort Blanket
Summary: It is up to Tommy and Y/N Shelby to keep the family together after their Mother’s death. They discover along the way that sometimes a comfort blanket is an object and other times it’s a feeling...
Word Count: 1891
Prompt: “There’s no place for us to sleep at night.” (part of @smallheathgangsters 1k followers party 💜)
A/N: This ended up being way more festive than I anticipated but, hey ho, it’s less than 3 month til Christmas now! I’ve also definitely taken some liberties with the whole pre-series story and ages and stuff but oh well. I’ve wanted to write a piece based on the blanket in this gif for a while now, so this prompt just worked perfectly for it!
Congratulations again, Leah, on the 1k milestone - it’s so well deserved, and here's to 1k more 🥳 I hope you and everyone else enjoys my little contribution to the celebration ❤️
(gif by @nofckingfighting)
The Shelby clan had never known darker times than the months following their mother's death.
Their father was more absent than ever before. Arthur Shelby Junior was still hopelessly trailing around after him. John had fled to Martha's house, seeking comfort in her arms. Ada was distraught, and everyone had given up trying to guess what her next move would be, for entering her teenage years had made her even more unpredictable than ever anyway. Between looking after Finn and working as much as her brother would allow, Polly was permanently exhausted.
Tommy felt like he was drowning alongside his mother, burdened with the responsibility of trying to look after his family as best he could whilst grieving.
That left Y/N. Born just a year after Tommy, she was the one he turned to when he needed a break. Whether it was to cry and mourn the loss of his beloved mother, or taking charge when all Tommy wanted to do was sleep after a long day's work, Y/N was always there. She picked up the pieces for all of her siblings, and was the oil that kept the cogs of the machine turning.
One night, Tommy and Y/N found themselves alone in the parlour, relishing in the moments of quiet that had fallen after the rest of the family had gone to bed. It was at these times that the pair confided in each other, whether it was their own news or that of their siblings.
Tonight, so far, they had sat in silence. But Y/N knew that Tommy would tell her something soon, and also knew that Tommy would be able to sense that she had something to tell him. It was all a matter of who would speak first.
"I don't know what to do, Y/N/N." Tommy had taken the leap this time.
"Don't know what to do about what?" Her brother's confession had surprised Y/N: Tommy always had a plan for everything.
"I'm doing everything I can to provide for us all and it's still not enough, even though I've taken every fucking job I can find. The lock on the door is still broken from when Dad came home drunk the other night, and the window next to Finn's nursery hasn't been mended yet from when John accidentally smashed it with his ball. Polly's had to take all of the spare blankets for him so that he doesn't get sick. We can't afford to buy any more. There's no place for us to sleep at night. Not somewhere that's safe and warm, anyway."
Y/N sighed. "First of all, Tom, and this is important, so you'd better fucking pay attention to me." Y/N was pleased to see that he let out a slight laugh at that. "You're doing an amazing job at all of this. We're all so grateful for everything you're doing, even if I'm the only one that will actually say it out loud. We couldn't ask any more of you, Tommy.
"Secondly, I may be able to help you – now, don't get mad!" Y/N added this last part hurriedly, having seen Tommy's eyebrows quickly shoot up. Taking a deep breath, Y/N broke the news. "Harry has given me a job...as a barmaid in the Garrison."
"What?!" Tommy jumped out of his seat, looking down at Y/N in disbelief. "Are you out of your mind? If you think I'm going to let you work there with all those drunk idiots every night, then you'd better think again."
"If you think you can tell me what I can and can't do, then you'd fucking better think again, Thomas," Y/N retorted, as her brother began to pace up and down the room. "In case you hadn't noticed, I'm an adult now and can make my own decisions. Anyway, I've worked everything out and I have a plan to put to you."
Tommy sat down again, not taking his eyes off his younger sister.
"You're working yourself into the ground, Tommy, and quite frankly we can't afford for you to be ill, so you need to get some more rest." The man in question opened his mouth to protest, but was cut off immediately by Y/N. "I want you to give up a couple of your jobs – some of them only pay a pittance, whilst my wage alone would cover that and a little more. I want you to put more time and energy into building up our Dad's business. I've got this feeling that it could become so much more, and you're the one that will make it happen, Tommy, I just know it!"
The second eldest Shelby brother sighed, his head falling heavily into his hands. He had to admit, Y/N's plan sounded incredibly tempting. But still, doubts invaded his thoughts, namely his concerns over his sister working in the Garrison of all places and the question of what if it all failed? What if they ended up in a worse position than they were in now?
With two words from Y/N, however, he was convinced: "Trust me."
"Fine. We'll give it a go on one condition – if any of those fuckers at the pub ever, and I mean ever, give you any bother whatsoever, you tell me straight away. Alright?"
Y/N smiled softly at her brother, pleased with the outcome of their conversation. "Alright," she whispered in agreement, reaching over to grab his hand.
"Thank you, Y/N." Tommy's voice broke through the silence, his sincerity as clear as day.
"We're going to be alright, Tom. One day, we won't have to worry about everyone being safe and warm in their beds. It might take some time, but we'll get there eventually."
Tommy nodded, almost imperceptibly, before slowly getting up to make his way to his own bed, only stopping to place a gentle kiss to his sister's forehead.
All they could do now was pray that Y/N would be right once again.
***
About a year later, their prayers were beginning to be answered.
Business at the betting shop was flourishing, and the Shelby's were gaining more respect by the day. It was all illegal, of course, but all that mattered to Tommy and Y/N was that enough money was rolling in to look after the family.
As Christmas drew nearer, their house was beginning to feel more like a home again for the first time since their mother passed. Fires roared in the hearth at night, they had finally been able to make the repairs that the house so desperately needed, and the family seemed to be happy.
The future looked brighter for the Shelby clan, and it was a sight that Y/N was overjoyed to have before her. Her plan had worked, the dark circles beneath Tommy's eyes were melting away and her Christmas present for him was finally ready.
Despite Tommy's arguments that she didn't need to stay on at the Garrison anymore, Y/N had decided to keep her job there. Surprisingly, she'd discovered that she was rather good at bar work and had been immensely satisfied when her brothers had entered the pub on one of their 'check-ups' on her to witness her chucking a couple of drunks out onto the street by the scruffs of their neck. Y/N liked earning her own money, rather than relying on Tommy, and it meant that no questions were asked about how she was spending it.
Most of her wages had gone towards Tommy's present, and Y/N could only hope that he liked it. The closer and closer that it got to the big day, the more Y/N began to doubt it. But she'd put too much work into it to turn back now.
She had decided against leaving it under the tree, not wanting anyone to be ridiculed for it, and instead kept it a secret in her room. So, on the night of the 25th, Y/N padded down the stairs to meet Tommy alone in the parlour.
"I thought you'd be in bed by now." Tommy was smiling up at her from his seat on the sofa.
"You know I'm always too excited at Christmas to get much sleep." Her brother rolled his eyes fondly at Y/N's reminder. "Anyway, I have one more present to give out."
Tommy's brows furrowed in confusion. "But we all opened your presents earlier, Y/N/N?"
"Yes, yes, I know – you don't need to make this any more embarrassing for me than it already is!."
The man in question chuckled, holding his hands up in surrender.
Y/N sat down next to her brother, and handed him the carefully wrapped package. "Happy Christmas, Tommy," she said, gently. As he began to open it, Y/N's nervous rambling automatically began. "Now, if you don't like it, just tell me. I won't be offended! I can find something else to do with it. It's not really your colours, now I think about it, and - "
"Y/N do you want me to open this or not?" Tommy snapped, but his eyes were full of fondness for his younger sister.
"Yes," Y/N replied, meekly.
Tommy pulled away the last of the wrapping to find a thick patchwork blanket, which was clearly handmade. Speechless at the thought and care put into the gift, he asked the only question that was running through his head: "Why?"
"I wanted to give you something special to say thank you for everything you've done for us since Mum died. Also, I'm not stupid, you know." At Tommy's confused expression, Y/N elaborated. "Nearly every morning before we got the house fixed up, I used to wake up with double the amount of blankets on top of me compared to how many I went to bed with. Your blankets, Tommy, when we barely had enough to share between us all in the first place. So I wanted to make you one myself that is yours and yours alone.
"You said to me once that we had nowhere to sleep at night that was safe and warm, but you created that place for us, for me. I know we've got plenty of blankets in the house now, but I just wanted to try and give you that same feeling of comfort that you gave to me." She stopped talking at that, suddenly aware of how long she had been going on for.
Tommy held the warm fabric in his hands, his thumb tracing the messy stitching which held each patch together, trying to blink away the tears glazing his eyes. "I love it, sweetheart. Thank you."
A relieved smile lit Y/N's face, but it was quickly replaced by a loud yawn. She gently rested her head on Tommy's shoulder as she curled her legs up on the sofa, and he wrapped his arm around her.
"Happy Christmas, Tom," Y/N mumbled sleepily.
"Happy Christmas, Y/N/N," Tommy replied with a smile.
Moments later, Y/N's breathing had evened out and she had fallen into a deep slumber. Tommy's eyes flitted between her sleeping form and the beautiful blanket on his knee.
Maybe he could share his blanket with his sister just one more time...

Please headcanon it! I agree with lit everything you've said, especially the arguing with Tommy and John being soft and supportive
John with a communist girl- head canon
author's note:
This is my first x reader thing, I guess. This is also the first request, sorts of. So thank you anon, whoever you are, for my first writing request on Tumblr.
Requests are still open btw
Okay, this was a little longer than I expected! And yes, John's kids are mentioned! I just love them and I could write another headcanon about them as well! With fan art, because I have clear pictures of them in my head.
I typed this on my phone, because rn I'm at my parents house with my crappy laptop and it's too slow for me. Usually I type so much faster.
I'm a communist myself so this was very funny to write, because I know my 'linke macker' or just 'mennes' and how to avoid them.
Warning: drinking, violence and bar fights
John always had a thing for strong women. He just doesn't like women who doesn't know what they want and are too shy to talk to men.
He thinks he women shouldn't be scared of talking to him, because he would never hurt a woman. That's why, he can handle shy girls. He doesn't want to carry the whole conversation and he doesn't like silence.
John wants someone he can talk to and also with. Full length conversation about everything. Which cigarettes are the best, if he should wear his cap or the other, what to have for dinner, which card game is the best game... Stuff like that
Since his first marriage he knows that in a good marriage it's you two against the problem and not you two against each other. That is the reason he is looking for a partner, someone he can rely on.
When he first heard your name, he laughed it off. A woman leading protests... He just couldn't believe other men would listen to a woman and follow her command, because he knows men too well and how they treat their wives.
Then he saw you on a pedestal giving a speech about women's rights and he was quite impressed by your volume and your powerful voice. Actually he was just passing by, but he had to stop and listen for a while. You made some fair points. Women did a lot of unpaid work, men could or would never do. But he had to go after all, because he had something to do.
He thought about you once or twice, but after seeing you in the Garrison for the first time, it was something he would never forget. You argued with a man, who confronted you about your speeches and told you to keep your mouth shut.
John was already on the edge of his seat, to help you out, when the man graped you. Faster than he could process it, the man went down. With unbelieving look on his face he stared at you. Never ever he had seen a woman like you. A woman a strong left hook like his.
Finally he stood up and made his way up to you. He grinned, completely smitten, and asked if everything was okay. You brushed it off. Of course, you didn't need help. No damsel in distress here!
Then he had to try something different, because he wanted to talk to you, more now than ever. But he seemed to get a clue, why so many others listened to your speeches and why so many man respected you. Just while standing there you claimed, what was rightfully yours, respect. Everything about you, your whole presence, was so powerful, even a little intimating, but that just turned him on even more. So he asked you about your political opinion on police violence and now it was your turned to be stunned.
Nobody outside of your party wanted to get in a discussion with you, but there he was right in front of you and the smile on his face was honest. He didn't tried to make fun of you. The Shelby was different than all men you had met before. So you went with him back to his table and just talked, talked all night and about all sorts of things.
You just couldn't believe you met a man like this, so charming, so respectful like this in the Garrison. All about him was interested. You felt for his voice and the glance in his eyes when you explained something to him.
Both of you didn't recognize it at first, but while talking you moved closer and closer to each other. Suddenly his hand went on your lap. He moved it away quickly and apologized with a smile. Then you took his hand back, while looking deep into his eyes. It was the moment you knew you passed the point of no-return.
Everything went pretty fast from there. He kissed you, you kissed him, his hands were all over you, despite being in public, and the casual night out ended in his bed.
When you woke up first, you wanted to get away just as fast as you arrived, but he stopped you. Right before you could leave the bed, John hold your hand.
"leaving already?" He asked: "let me make you a cup of tea first"
The way he said with his sleepy voice was all it took to make you stay after all
Then you heard something that made you nervous. The sound of small feet making their way up to this room, mixed with squeaking voice of a little girl
"you got kids?" You croaked
John nodded. "Didn't you know?" Because everybody in Small Heath seemed to know. Kids aren't a secret anyway.
No, you didn't and you shook head. You knew his name, his reputation, but otherwise you didn't bother to listen after the Shelby's name was dropped
Everything the Peaky blinders did was not really legal or nice, so you wanted to stay away from them and further troubles.
Now you slept with one of the Shelby brothers and wondered, if you made a mistake last night by walking home with him.
John saw the concern on your face. "You have a problem with that?"
You eyes widened and you shook your head again. "No. No! I love kids." After taking care of your younger siblings and the kids of of your older siblings and probably a dozen cousins, you knew you loved kids.
And you had a plan to get some children of your own, but you were to busy to work for women's rights and worker's rights and the revolution.
And as you got older you realized that most men took their women for granted, while they did so much for their husbands everyday. You didn't want that for yourself. And you did pretty well on your own. Why would you need a husband anyway?
But something in your heart melted while you looked at him with his kids. You just couldn't deny that and soon you became his girl.
Everybody seemed to know and they treated you different now. You disliked it, but there was nothing you could do about, so you just made your peace with that.
One evening John and you laid in his bed. The kids were already asleep. When John whispered: "I want you to meet my family."
Of course you saw them passing by and they greeted you. Once you sat with Arthur in the Garrison, while waiting for John. But you hadn't talked with them more than a few words.
Then again, you weren't so sure, if you would like to. You knew Tommy from before the war, while he was still in your party and a communist. But that was before the war changed everything. Tommy- you heard from others- became a cold-hearted asshole, who didn't even smile since he came back from france.
While being with him in the party, Tommy and you wouldn't stop "discussing things". Actually you two fought everytime and about every little political issue. One time he threw something at you. This was how much you liked each other and you still had the scar and your forehead from book he threw at you.
John stroked you head and said: "everything is going to be alright. You'll see." You nodded in agreement. If it was his wish, you just couldn't say no. And maybe you could get along with Tommy after all.
But no, it wasn't that easy. Polly, Arthur, Ada and Finn liked you so much, but with Tommy everything was still the same. So not exactly everything had changed after all.
The both of you couldn't stop bickering at the dinner table. It ended with you storming of and leaving. Or at least you thought this was the end.
Right after you slammed the door, you heard John yelling: "I was about to ask her, if she would marry me! Don't ruin this for me! This is my life."
Then you really had to leave. You were scared John would come after you and ask you right away, because you didn’t know what to say.
You ran straight to your parents home and hid there. When the panic vanished you knew your answer.
That night you sneaked to his house and knocked. John seemed so relieved to see you. “I looked for you everywhere, y/n!”
“The answer is yes.”, you sputtered with gleaming joy
It came out of nowhere and John just kept starring at you with the same confused expression
Then you added: “I want to be your wife”
You could see his brain processing this infromation. John still looked baffled.
A grin appeared on his face as he realized what you just had said. Just secounds later he pulled you closer for a kiss

Word Count: 3,425
Characters: Tommy x Reader
Summary: Y/n helps Ada Shelby on a whim, saving her life and earning some praise from the Shelby family, but little did she know she’d fall for one of their most respected members.
Summary of Request: “Reader saving one of the Shelbys from their enemies and taking them home safely and the family being thankful. A few days later the enemy goes after the reader thinking she works for them and they destroy her shop, house, or car. Requested by: Anon
It was a bleak winter evening the night you met Thomas Shelby. The stars were shining and the moon was illuminating the dark roads of Small Heath, giving you an rare view of the town. You had just finished packing up your small jewelry stand that you had set up near where your families vardo was parked. This was one of your more frequent stops as there were always locals wanting to buy jewelry for their loved ones. In return, this made you a nice familiar face amongst the dreary town.
In the distance, you heard screaming, but it wasn’t one of children playing or couples yelling, it was fearful and full of anguish. Before you knew it you were running towards the sound. Yelling for your mother to keep an eye on your stuff as you dashed off into the unknown. Your heart beat frantically as the shrill screams got closer, causing a shiver down your spine as your eyes adjusted to what lay before you in the dark alley. A woman seemingly around your age was lying there in a pool of blood, a cut running across her arm and a stab wound to her abdomen. You cringed at first, but having seen your fair share of blood due to your family throwing punches and hunting, it made you a bit less squeamish. You carefully crouched down beside her, pulling off your scarf as you gently placed it over her abdomen.
Her eyes were closed and her voice was horse when she spoke.
“Please don’t let me die out here. Please take me back.” She said crying as she finally glanced up at you.
“I-I won’t let you die love you’ll be fine...where do you live? What’s your name?” You asked applying pressure to her wound as she screamed out in pain.
“A-Ada...Ada Shelby...I don’t want to go home. Take me to my brothers.” She said frantically trying to get up.
“Hey hey easy, it’s okay I got you. Where are they aye?” You asked as you draped her arm across your shoulder and helped her walk down the dark glass-like roads.
“The betting shop on the corner. You really don’t know do you?” She asked.
“Know what Ada?” You asked, leading her up the street.
“Usually if I say the last name Shelby people run or they look at me like I killed their whole family. The Shelby’s are part of the Peaky Blinders...does that ring a bell?” She asked wincing, signaling for you to stop for a moment. As you both caught your breath, you shook your head no.
“I don’t know how you couldn’t tell but I’m not like most people. I’m not from here. I travel with my family and I come here often to find work and to sell jewelry, but other than that? I’m on the road.” You said looking at your flat shoes, nothing compared to miss Ada’s fancy heels.
“I see...what’s your name?” She asked smiling slightly.
“Y/N Y/L/N.” You said, grabbing her arm and helping her walk towards the brick building up ahead.
You led her through the doors, the scent of whiskey and cigarettes filling the dimly lit lobby.
“Polly! Tommy! All of you bastards help me please!” She said yelling as the scarf grew more saturated with blood in the short time you walked her in. She was paling and you sat her up in a nearby chair as you heard everyone running over.
“My god what happened! Arthur, John, get the first aid kit now!” She yelled as Tommy came over, a worried look on his usually stoic face. You grabbed your coat, applying pressure as Ada winced until they got back with the supplies.
“I was walking here from my apartment. Tommy, I think one of Changretta’s men got me. They had those awful tattoos on their necks. They fucking cut me and stabbed me. I can’t die not like this.” She said putting a hand on her pale forehead.
Tommy looked at her concerned, his eyes going down to you as you sat by her holding her other hand.
“Who are you?” He asked angrily.
“Y/N Y/L/N...I heard her when I was packing my jewelry stand up. I ran over to help her. I didn’t see where the men went though.” You said looking him in the eyes before helping Polly prep some gauze. You took your glove off and urged her to open her mouth.
“You’ll want to bite down on something. This is going to hurt.” You said before pouring some of the whiskey on her abdomen while Polly poured some on her arm. Ada screamed through the cloth, earning concerned glances from some of the unrelated workers in the shop. You poured more, making sure to flush out the wound before quickly threading a needle.
“I can stitch if you’d rather not go to a hospital.” You said. Polly eyed you and Ada nodded as you began. Tommy watched as you worked, neatly stitching the small puncture wound closed.
Polly gently wrapped her arm with gauze and you helped Ada up to wrap some around her waist. After that, she gave you a hug and you went to grab your coat.
“No dear, here I’ll wash these, it’s the least we can do. Thank you for saving our Ada, Y/N.” Polly said smiling.
“Of course...I couldn’t let something happen knowing I was that close.” You said, messing nervously with the gold necklaces draped around your neck.
“So you’re travelling with the other gypsies up the road aye?” Polly asked.
“Yeah. my family likes stopping here, good business since it’s busy usually.” You said.
“Oh I’m very familiar. I grew up traveling. I think I’ve seen you before...you sell the beautiful necklaces.” She said smiling, putting your nerves at ease.
“Yeah...” You said.
“C’mon we have to find them. John you get the guns, Arthur you get the ammo.” Tommy said lowly walking by you.
“Are you going after them?” You asked him. He stopped in his tracks as his eyes pierced yours. He nodded and lit a cigarette staring at you as he waited for his brothers.
“You going to kill them?” you asked.
He smirked and looked over at Ada and Polly and then back at you.
“No I’m just goin’ to see if they want to have a tea party.” He said dryly joking.
You nodded, knowing the real answer. To be honest you’d do the same if someone came after your family.
They soon left, leaving you with Polly and a groaning Ada.
“You’ve not heard of the blinders?” Polly asked gathering your blood soaked clothing. You shook your head, yet preparing yourself for her explanation of the family business.
Later that night, you were taken back to where you family was parked by one of the Shelby’s drivers. Thanking him as you were helped out of the fancy black car. Your family came out of the two vardos and ran towards you enveloping your frame in a hug and asking where you had run off to. You hesitantly told them, knowing they were more likely to know who your new acquaintances are.
Your father tensed up and so did your mother, but you reassured them and could tell they were still happy you stopped to help someone.
The next few days passed and you spent them selling various necklaces and then deciding to go into town with your parents. You all bought some supplies and various things, and then returned a few hours later. While unpacking your latest haul, you heard an oddly familiar voice outside. Carefully stepping out, you saw Ada and Tommy talking with your parents. They seemed at ease as you heard Tommy speaking with your father. As you walked up you saw Ada smile and go in for a hug. You embraced her gently to avoid ripping her stitches and then stepped back.
“Hello Y/N. We wanted to thank you.” He said smiling slightly, handing you your jacket and scarf from the previous night, no sign of blood on them. They were soft and smelled rather floral.
“Oh thank you. And it was no problem really Mr. Shelby.” You said, catching him looking at you as you glanced up from the coat in your arms.
“Call me Tommy.” He said, another small smile playing at his lips.
Your parents excused themselves knowing this was more your business than theirs, and you hugged Ada once more before waving them off.
A thought crossed your mind though, making you smirk.
“Hey Tommy!” You asked, causing him to stop with Ada, the two of them looking at you.
“How was the tea party?” You asked smirking.
“Great...a little bloody though.” He said smirking back.
You nodded and waved them off, putting on your coat and placing your scarf in one of your pockets. When you tried to pull your hand out, your fingers brushed against a piece of paper. You gently pulled it out, and opened it so you could read what it said.
“Y/N Y/L/N,
I apologize for being so frank last night. Per my aunt Polly’s request...as well as all of my sibling’s, I have written this as a thank you for saving my sister. She has been talking non-stop about the events that transpired and about you. Something about how we should meet more often and that you seem like a good fit for me? I can’t say no to her though, since she practically begged me to write this.
Therefore, since we didn’t meet in normal circumstances and since I can’t help but to agree, I’d love to ask you out. I’ll be at the shop tomorrow evening at 6. If you’re interested, I’d love for you to come by. I look forward to getting to know you and discussing the “tea party.”
~ T. S.”
You smiled at the small letter and laughing at the assumed inside joke between you two. You’d barely met the man, but if his family felt this strongly, you figured it couldn’t hurt. You’d been single for a long while, the constant travel putting a strain on any relationship you attempted to have in the past.
The next day you spent the day rummaging through your various dresses, picking out a lacey white one. You slipped it on and checked your makeup in the small mirror in your vardo before heading out, wrapping your coat around your shoulders. As you made your way through the streets you eventually got to the shop and walked in nervously. It was a drastically different atmosphere compared to the other night, men were roaming about yelling out various numbers and the other women among them were typing and making calls.
You saw Polly in the distance and smiled when she saw you come in. She quickly walked over, giving you a hug.
“What are you doing here dear? Is everything alright?” She asked.
You smirked. “I’m um, here to see Tommy. I got a letter?” You said, holding it in your hand.
“Ah that. I’m glad he got to writing it. I’ll show you to his office.” She said, taking your hand.
She knocked and he answered, letting her in with you following behind.
“I have a visitor Tommy. Be good. She said nodding towards him and leaving.
Tommy smiled and stood up, eyeing you as you walked towards his desk.
“I see you got the letter...would you like a drink? I have whiskey and.....whiskey.” He said, walking over to his stash of the brown liquid and crystal glasses.
“That’s a hard one...I’m going to have to go with the whiskey.” You said smirking.
A minute later you were holding a cold glass, sipping on it as you sat in one of Tommy’s leather chairs.
“So about the tea party...I’m assuming my aunt told you about the peaky business right?” He asked.
“Yeah.” You said, fiddling with your necklace.
“Does that make you scared?” He asked. You thought for a moment, but you decided to take another chance.
“Not really. I’m here aren’t I?” You said.
He laughed lightly and took a drink, sitting down beside you.
“You said you agreed to their request of meeting me...is that true?” You asked. Tommy got up after a moment and put his hand out for you to grab.
“If it weren’t, we wouldn’t be leaving.” He said. You took his hand and laughed as he pulled you through the lobby and out the doors of the shop.
“Where the hell are we going?” You asked seeing the sun was setting over the town.
“The Garrison. I figured that it’d be more of a date if I took ya somewhere.” He said ushering you inside the pub. The smell of smoke and various alcohols filled your nostrils as you took your coat off and placed it with Tommy’s.
As you all talked the night away, you grew more drowsy and he walked you back towards your vardo. But in shock, you stood there looking at the sight before you. The wooden planks holding up the intricate structure were torn off, and the inside was destroyed. You ran over to your parents and saw them picking up pieces of clothing and random trinkets the assumed robbers left behind. When you walked back and checked your living space you saw a black cross-like design had been painted on your door.
You looked at Tommy with hot, anger filled tears in your eyes.
“Who did this? Who fucked with my family aye?” You said walking up to him and shoving him in the shoulder. He barely moved as a an angry look overcame his features as well. You stormed off and rummaged for a handgun you had in your purse, never feeling the need to use it until now.
“You know who did this don’t you. Don’t fucking lie to me Tom.” You said cocking the gun and checking the bullets. He watched you as you angrily paced, and walked over, gently placing his hand over the barrel of the gun.
“I do know. It’s the same gang that attacked Ada. We...unfortunately have a vendetta with them. But going out there and shooting random men isn’t going to stop this.” He said looking at you. You were shaking slightly at the sudden rush of emotions as the alcohol still burned through your system.
“They took almost everything from us. Where will we go? Where the hell will we live? I though you took care of them last time!” You yelled, easing the handgun down and shoving it back into your purse.
“I have a spare property down the road, you all can stay there. Don’t worry Y/N I’ll make sure they won’t live to see tomorrow.” He said before you threw him into a hug. You cried knowing your family was safe, but also at the thought of losing all you’ve worked for. Your life was in that small space and it was all gone or severely broken, and your heart was too.
“C’mon, I’ll send some men to come help them. I’ll take you to the shop, and you’ll stay there until I get back ok?” He said. You nodded and followed him to the shop, this time in a much more sullen tone.
He immediately called everyone into the meeting room and he let you sit by Polly as he spoke. You quietly told her what happened and she sighed. The rest of them you had assumed liked you after saving their sisters life and all, and so they all got ready, cocking their guns and putting on their razor caps. Ada came over to you with tears in her eyes, taking your hands in hers.
“Oh Y/N I’m so sorry to have dragged you into this.” She said. You smiled and reassured her she wasn’t at fault. As the night drug on, you discussed your new living situation and were alerted by some of Tommys men that your parents were safe. You cried with relief, sitting in the meeting room shakily. Polly came in a moment later, with some tea, knowing you needed something to calm your nerves.
“Thanks.” You said, feeling the hot steam against your lips.
“No problem. Don’t worry about him, he’ll be back. He always is.” She said staring out at the night sky through the dusty window.
You nodded, sitting there as you let your mind wander. You looked up after a long while, your eyes growing heavy, and decided to concentrate on the clock. It was almost midnight.
Before your mind could race to where your new love interest could be, he thankfully came through the doors with his brothers, as they hollered and sat their weapons down.
You stood up slowly, as you saw Tommy walk towards you. He had a cut on his forehead and a slightly busted lip.
He said nothing as he came to you, the adrenaline from the night coursing through him as he embraced you, catching you by surprise. He then kissed you, his lip burning slightly as he kissed you, but nevertheless he continued. When he stopped, you stood there gazing into his eyes.
“They’re gone. You don’t have to worry now.” He said. You nodded and hugged him again, feeling him planting a kiss on the top of your head.
“Well are you going to invite her over or are you going to fuck in the lobby?” Arthur shouted as John and the others laughed. Tommy turned around slightly and gave him a look and then turned back to you.
“Would you like to go now?” He asked.
Your cheeks heated up at his brothers remarks, but you decided to take him up on the offer. “Yeah, as a matter of fact I do.” You said, and before you knew it you where being led out to his car and driven to his house, nervously awaiting what was to come. As soon as you got to his estate, he led you through on a tour. Your eyes widened at the grandiosity of the place. You had rarely seen a place like this, only imagining them in fairytales. You looked around as he led you through, stopping lastly at the main bedroom which you assumed was his.
You had just enough time to revel at the room before he kissed you again, making you giggle slightly as he snaked his arms around your waist and nipped at your neck. As he worked his way down, he undid your dress, letting it slip down your frame as he went to lie back on the bed. You hesitantly undid his shirt and pants, slipping them off as he watched you.
“Are you sure you want to?” He asked.
“Never been so sure in my life...” You said before straddling his waist. He smirked, and kissed you as you continued your movements making him fall for you more with each second that passed.
After your night together, you decided a couple of days later on another date, more-so like a re-do since you both were more drawn to each other. As time went on, you became closer with his family, while yours acclimated to their new temporary surroundings. And over the upcoming weeks you managed to land a job with them, helping you to earn some money and helping your parents to get a new vardo to get them back on their feet. After a couple of months you had been able to attend more of the family meetings, after deciding to stay at Tommy’s place instead of travelling. And after some odd weeks later, a new gang problem arose, giving you that same fearful feeling that you had some many months ago. Before heading out, tommy cocked his gun and checked the bullets making sure each one was accounted for, and walked past you with his brothers towards the door.
“Hey you forgot something...” You said smirking as he smiled and walked towards you kissing you.
“No more tea parties alright? You be careful okay?” You said. He chuckled and winked at you before heading out the door, going out to deal with death and destruction once again. As much as you hated him being gone, you loved when he came back, and his family did too of course, especially since you’ve made him a bit nicer. As you walked back to your desk and picked up where you left of with your work, you smiled, knowing you made the right choice and took the right chances.

heartbreaker - tommy shelby
hiiii, i’m back on my obsession with this man... i was going to write something short but then i couldn’t control myself and this happened. let me know your thoughts, feedback is always welcomed <3
and idk what kind of writing is this, since i find it hard & scary to write a full one shot but i know this isn’t a hc or drabble as well, i only hope you enjoy it :)) and i’m free for three weeks and i’m waiting for your tommy requests as always
gif is not mine, credits to the owner
being the most reckless teenage girl in small heath, it wasn’t a surprise you hung out with the blue-eyed princess, ada shelby
it all started when you were barely ten, going to the same school
soon you were sharing a desk and tons of laughs
even the teachers failed to make you silent. if they tried to separate you two, you’d cause a huge mess in the classroom
spending time at shelbys after a long school day, chatting all afternoon in her room, ada complaining about her brothers and you giggling at her words
one day you laid your hands on a book and it was it, you were telling stories to ada all day long
you started talking about how small the small heath really was, a tiny world which you decided to leave the first chance you got
then you were fifteen, a young soul with wildness, searching for every kind of trouble possible
ada on your arm, going on dates with boys you knew from school, sneaking out all the time
but ada wasn’t the same, thanks to her overprotective brothers. they believed you were a bad influence for her but your souls were bonded
and that never stopped john from taking you out a night, getting you a drink and kissing your lips
you weren’t looking for a strong relationship and neither did he so it was just a few days and a few more kisses, none of the family members knowing it - or you both thought that
you were hanging out with a boy for a few months, then you were over it in a day. next week, you were going to pictures with another guy, laughing and enjoying your life
ada insisted you spent many nights with her, you girls talking about everything and by the time you were seventeen, you thought her older brother tommy looked quite good
one night you woke up, walking downstairs to have a glass of water and there he was, sipping tea in the middle of the night
‘what are you doing, tom?’ you asked, your eyes still trying to adjust to the light as you frowned, wondering if something was wrong
‘i’m thinking. care to join me for a cup of tea?’ he suggested and well, who were you to say no?
you took the chair next to him and watched him bringing you a cup and pouring you hot tea. the view seemed and felt too regular to you, you’ve seen him doing the same for his siblings for thousand times
just before you reached for the sugar, he leaned forward and put the exact amount of sugar you used. you didn’t say anything as he looked at you, you watched his fingers holding the hot cup, knuckles almost white
‘what are you thinking?’ you asked shyly, you weren’t so close with him unlike other shelbys. john was a friend, arthur was like a brother but tommy? you didn’t know what was he to you
he was the brother who tried to keep ada on the line and you were the distracter. the young, reckless friend filled with passion for everything. you were excited about books, boys and anything life had to offer you
‘the war, the soldiers’ he said like he was talking about the weather
‘what? you’re not thinking about going there, are you?’ you frowned immediately, leaning in to look directly into his eyes
‘i don’t know, feels like i should be there like the other boys’ he said the truth and you grabbed his wrist, an annoyed look plastered on your face ‘are you serious? don’t act like a fool, tom’
his name sounded harsh on your lips, like the times he spotted you and ada at the pub, taking you back home as you resisted. even though he was seven years older than you, you were never afraid to say his name as you wished
‘do you think it’s a joke, y/n?’ he asked, his blue orbs focused on you, ignoring your glued fingers on his arm
‘your family needs you here, not in a shithole in france. you’ll go there and what? that’ll prove something to the people? or you’ll end up as a man with no grave? leaving these people here just with pain?’ you hissed, glaring at him as you let go of his arm
‘you speak like i don’t care about them. i want to protect this country so they’ll be safe’ he explained calmly
‘you can’t leave them’ you said but it came out as a whisper, you almost said ‘us’ instead of ‘them’. tommy watched you staring at the tea and he tried to guess what was going on inside your head
‘as if you like me, y/n’ he faked a smile in an attempt to cheer you a bit but it only made you angrier, ‘fuck you, tom’ you hoped he didn’t see the blush rising to your cheeks and turned your head away from him
‘that’s not what you’ve said to john, huh?’ he couldn’t control the words so when you heard him, your lips parted with surprise. ‘i don’t have to defend myself to you, that was two years ago’
‘i saw you two, then you broke his heart’ he let it out and you didn’t know what to say, ‘it wasn’t something serious and that was before martha, he looks very happy now’
‘that’s just what you do, right? breaking hearts and moving on’ his words caught you off guard and you thought he was trying to change the war subject. if he wanted to argue, you were up for it
‘it’s not my problem if boys are that fragile. maybe they should, you know, grow up’ you said simply, waiting for another smart answer
‘grow up and what, break your heart?’ he asked back and you found yourself smiling, ‘oh, no. i’m the heartbreaker here. they should look for a girl who’ll marry them and stand them’
‘wise words for a little girl’ he said as he smiled, a real one this time. ‘little girl? i’m almost eighteen and i remember, your girlfriend isn’t too older than me’ with the mention of greta, his smile fell off and you could tell something was wrong
‘what’s wrong, is she okay?’ you asked and waited impatiently for an answer. ‘she’s sick, i-’ he stopped and shook his head slowly, ‘i don’t know what to do, she’s not getting better, just worse and.. her parents don’t let me see her’
‘i’m so sorry’ you managed to say and when he looked at you, he knew you meant it. ‘why didn’t you tell....’ you were going to ask if the other shelbys knew but it sounded ridiculous in your head
‘i don’t know how to. whatever, i shouldn’t have told you, too’
‘you know, i’m not your enemy. yet it looks like you’re searching for more, huh?’ he was thinking of an answer but you weren’t waiting for one, you got up and walked to the stairs, leaving him with his thoughts
that was the last time tommy saw you, you disappeared for the next days and soon he found out from ada, your aunt passed away and you moved to london with your mom
unlike her shy, sweet sister greta, kitty jurossi was outgoing and she happened to be a friend of a friend of yours. before you left for london, you managed to persuade your mother to go and speak to her family
with that, tommy shelby was allowed to stand by his first love and hold her hand for three months until she closed her eyes and never opened them again
days after her funeral, he’d learn the reason why her parents let him stay with her. then he signed up for war, leaving without looking back. in the end, there was nothing for him to stay
meanwhile, you were discovering the london, meeting with new people and trying not to think of small heath. of course, you were missing your best friend but ada and you both knew you’d escape the small town with the first chance you got
ada’s response to your letter arrived months later, letting you know greta was dead and the shelby men were in france, fighting for the king
it made you sick for days, unfamiliar nausea bothering you all day, making your whole body ache. you were worried for the shelby men you grew up with and for the women waiting for their family
the war continued mercilessly and at some point you even thought about writing the boys a letter but you didn’t know what to say after leaving them without a word
then it was all over. ada wrote to you, telling you they all returned yet everything was different now. the way tommy turned and the lack of sincerity in john’s smiles. he used to laugh, you thought
you were living on your own in london when you got another letter from ada, it was bad news. apparently freddie was dead, which made you cry on the carpet on your hallway, remembering the boy ada used to talk about years ago. ‘now it’s just me and karl, y/n. i’m leaving this hell, probably coming to london’
but she forgot to give you a new address and you never dared to write to shelbys, asking about ada. you guessed they didn’t hear from her as well, since she left with a broken heart and rage
one day you couldn’t find a book at the bookshop so you made your way to the library, looking for a worker to help you. there she was, the best friend you ever had
‘ada?’ you asked and it was it, you were reunited. spending days talking about everything that happened after you left with lots of hugs, glasses of wine and cups of tea
you started to spend most of the week at her house and of course, karl loved you. it was as if you never parted away, you were happy again
she learned you were continuing your career as a heartbreaker with londoners. ‘heartbreaker, huh? is there anyone nowadays, y/n sweetheart?’
‘oh no, i used to hang around with a writer. he was saying i was his muse all the time and you know, it’s nice to hear things like that. then he left the fucking country, saying he wasn’t productive with all the noise in the city’
‘someone sounds angry’ she teased and you laughed, ‘i was but i don’t care much. i mean, i couldn’t leave here and move to the countryside, raising chickens. i need the wildness in this crazy city’
soon you were going to the parties together, good looking men and booze surrounding you all the time
it was your birthday when you went to have dinner at a nice restaurant, then met with your other friends in a nightclub
you would say both of you could handle your drinks but when it was almost midnight, you thought ‘fuck it, we can mess for once’ then the rest of it was a little bit blurry
you could remember the girls dropping you to ada’s flat and ada going to her room. you lit a cigarette and once it was finished, you thought how soft was the carpet at the living room. even it was an uncomfortable surface, you slept like a baby
that’s why you didn’t hear the knock on the door. then with a little force, it opened. thomas shelby walked in, cursing underneath his breath
he stepped in and saw a body laying on the ground, a woman, wearing a short silk dress and tommy walked to her with fear, his heartbeat quickening
then he realised it was you, after all those years. you were breathing, thank god. so he gently shook you, ‘y/n’ your name sounded like a pray on his lips
you sighed and opened your eyes slowly, only to see a man kneeling beside you and that man happened to have a face of a ghost from your past, tommy shelby himself
‘tom?’ you asked and you thought it didn’t feel real. ‘i’m still that drunk, huh?’ you chuckled softly but when you looked again, he was still there
‘it’s not a dream, y/n. i’m here and i see, you haven’t changed, not even a bit’ he sounded kinda angry, frustrated because the state he found you in
you frowned and watched him, ‘and here i was, thinking i got prettier’ he rolled his eyes but soon enough you were both smiling
‘you are’ he let it out and you stared at him, ‘that means i wasn’t pretty back then?’ this time his smile was wider, ‘i didn’t say that’ it was surprising you both, you were talking like you weren’t strangers now
it was weird yet comforting, familiar just like the last time you spoke, years ago. you could see he was a man now, a beautiful one with hands covered with blood you couldn’t see
and there you were, he thought. still a heartbreaker with an angel’s face

In true Tommy fashion, the kiss was never spoken about once it happened. It had been a short, soft kiss. One that could have meant anything, and the possibilities left you more conflicted than the goodbye kiss to John ever could have.
In the weeks after that night, everything had stayed relatively the same. The Shelby's still came in and conducted business or drank. You still helped Harry keep the bar in order. And you and the Shelby men still were on good terms. John had been distant for a time after that night; he had slowly started coming back around and you both were trying to find the new line that the friendship needed to be built around.
One day when you had come into The Garrison early, you were taking care of the few day customers while Harry worked on paperwork when Finn came running in.
"(Y/N)," he said, bounding up to the bar, "I was hoping you were here."
"'lo Finny," you said with a smile. "I came in a bit early so Harry could catch up. Why were you looking for me?"
"Tommy asked me to get you and Lizzie," he said, looking nervously at the patrons at the bar. "He said 'go get (Y/N) and Lizzie Stark, it's her off day from being secretary, and take them both to my office' and that's what I'm after."
"Oh did he?" You ask with a raised brow. "I suppose what King Tommy wants, King Tommy gets. Let me go talk to Harry and we'll be on the way."
Finn nods excitedly and you walk to the back.
"Harry?" You called as you walked to the back office. "You got a moment?"
"Sure, sure," the man waved you in. "What do you want? I was almost done. One of the regulars driving you mad?"
"No, not that," you said as you leaned in the doorway of the small office and rubbed your arm. "Tommy has Finn at the bar, said he's here to fetch me to bring to the office for something."
Harry's eyes shot up from the paperwork and his brows knitted together. He licked his lips, dropping the pen and taking a deep breath before speaking.
"(Y/N)," he started kindly. "I know you've known the Shelby's since you were children. I know," he paused, looking for words, "I know you care for them. And them for you, as far as I've seen. But be careful."
You tried to give him a confident smile, but it mostly felt forced.
"I'm careful, Harry," you said. "I've done plenty you wouldn't approve of before working here. I'll do plenty you don't approve of now."
"I have no doubt, little bird," he chuckled. "But you can only play with fire so long before something burns."
You nodded.
"I know," you said quietly. Harry gave you a long look before smiling and nodding toward the hallway.
"Off with you," he said gruffly. "Tell the regulars I'll be out in a moment. Tell them not to help themselves in the meantime."
You smiled and nodded again, walking back to the bar.
"I'll be back," you called behind you.
When you got back to the room, you told the regulars to wait on Harry in the back, and you gathered your coat from behind the bar.
"Let's go, Finny," you said, and smiled as he raised his arm for you to take.
You let him lead you to the vehicle and open the door for you. You crawled in as he rounded the car and got in the driver's seat. Finn turned the ignition over and off to Lizzie's apartment down the road you went.
Finn left you in the car to fetch Lizzie. You decided to scoot to the middle of the bench and straddle the stick shift to allow her the passenger seat so no one was forced to sit alone in the back. A few moments later you saw Finn escorted Lizzie out of the building and to the car.
"(Y/N)," Lizzie said stiffly. "Do you know why Tommy wants us on my day off?"
"No clue, Lizzie," you said as Finn got in on the other side of you. "But I'm sure it's not regular business."
Finn stiffened beside you and hesitated, but you weren't sure why. He started the vehicle and apprehensively shifted into first gear.
"Well obviously he didn't want me for regular work if he's sending Finn," Lizzie said. "But why is he asking for us both?"
Finn drove slower than usual down the road, and you weren't sure how long it would take to get to the office at the current speed.
"I wasn't told nothin'," Finn said, still putting slowly down the road. "I already said so."
"Yes, Finn," Lizzie said sharply. "We know your brother doesn't tell you anything. I was asking if (Y/N) knows."
You shrug, both shoulders touching the other two.
"I didn't know I was asked for until Finny interrupted my work at The Garrison," you said, still noticing the Ford hadn't picked up speed since you left Lizzie's apartment.
"Oh for fucks sake, Finny," you said exasperated. "Push the clutch in, will you."
You grabbed the shift between your legs and shoved it into second gear.
"Yes ma'am," Finn gulped as he did what he was told and the Ford picked up speed.
Lizzie chuckled.
"Looks like you have a virgin Shelby after you as well," she said.
"Shut up, Liz," You said angrily. "He's a boy. Not everyone is ready to look for your services."
Lizzie quieted and held a scowl.
"Now can you be a man and shift or do we need to pull over and I drive?" You growled at Finn.
"I'll drive," he said, edge in his voice. "Tommy told me to pick you up. He won't take kindly to you driving me back."
"I highly doubt Tommy would scold you if I took over the car," you said. "But I won't sit in first gear the entire trip. So grow up."
"Yes ma'am," Finn murmured, hesitantly grabbing the shift between your legs and moving into third gear.
The rest of the drive took much less time.
When you arrived, Finn opened the passenger door and helped you both out of the car before leading you up to Tommy's office. He knocked on the closed door twice before Tommy called out "come in" in a rough voice. Finn opened the door for you both and let you walk to the chairs in front of Tommy's desk before closing the door behind you.
"Sit down, ladies," Tommy said, head buried in paperwork and glasses on his face. "Let me look this one paper over and then I'll be right with you."
You both apprehensively took the two chairs and sat stiffly, eyeing Tommy. As you waited in the silence, you couldn't help but look Tommy over.
Tommy's brow were tightly knotted as he read whatever paper was in front of him. His glasses barely hung on his nose, and his right hand held a cigarette that had been burning without his breath for quite some time. When he finally looked up, he looked at you first. His face relaxed as he noticed the intensity of your stare, but all emotion was soon hidden behind a blank face.
"What do you want, Tommy?" You said, breaking the silence. "Why are we here?"
"Right," Tommy said, clearing his throat as he leaned back in his chair and looked between you both. "We have business, and we need" he paused, looking for the word, "decorations, with us. Distractions."
"You need women so they don't look so hard at you," Lizzie said blankly. Tommy nodded.
"Exactly," he said. "But we want women we can trust. They know Polly and Ada are family, and this isn't a family event. We need you two to come along and give them something to look at."
"I'm not a whore, Tommy," you said angrily. "I'll not be traded."
"No trading," Tommy said, arms open as he tried placating your fears. "And no whoring. We just need you to pretend to be our girls while we talk."
"You need us to pretend to be your whores," Lizzie said with agitation. "So they'll be looking at us and you won't be asked to be with theirs."
Tommy nodded. Lizzie pursed her lips and gave a short nod. You squinted at Tommy.
"Can't you just bring whores for that?" You said.
"I don't trust whores," he said agitated. "I trust you. Now will you do it or do you need to keep fighting me?"
"It's not like you're really asking us," you snap back.
"You're right," he said. "I'm not. We'll get you a nice set of dresses and pick you up at 7 tomorrow night. I'll tell Harry you're off, (Y/N)."
"Fine," you both mutter. Tommy's blue eyes looked sharply between you both before he nodded more to himself than to you.
"Dress not so low on my back, please," you say softly, looking down at your hands in your lap.
"Right," he said, jaw clenching. "Be off with you. We'll see you tomorrow. Someone will deliver the dresses before then."
You both stood up and numbly walked out of the office. Once out of the building, you both paused, seeing Finn had already left with the car. Lizzie lit a cigarette.
"I see how he watches you," she said through her exhale of smoke. "But I'm the one he visits at night when his head is too loud."
"He still pays you, though, doesn't he?" You said quietly. "He pays you because it keeps you distant. It writes you off. He might go to you, but it's a transaction."
Lizzie froze, anger bubbled just beneath the surface. She dropped her cigarette, stomping it out and stormed off toward her apartment.
----
You were nervous through the night and into the next day. You didn't know exactly what you would be doing that night other than being pretty and quiet.
Isaiah delivered the dress and matching heels around lunch. You tried to offer him tea or a snack but he waved you off.
"Nah," he said. "I've got more running to do," he walked backwards to the road. "But have a good time at the party. I peeked at the dress."
He sent a wink that left your mouth agape as he ran down the road to finish doing whatever errands were given to him. You hugged the box to you and disappeared back into your home.
You looked closely at the blue box before you finally had the courage to open it. You unwrapped the paper within and gasped at the sleek silky slip dress below. It was the same blue as the cotton one you had bought that was now your favorite. It had beading along the shoulders and heels dyed and beaded to match. You ran your hands over it lovingly, knowing the price they must have paid was far higher than you could ever afford.
You got ready over the next few hours, curling your hair, putting it up off of your shoulders, putting on lipstick and getting dressed. You had found a small matching clutch in the box that you decided to place your lipstick and a few dollars in as you waited. You hesitated, looking at your small knife before slipping it into the bag as well.
Shortly after seven you heard a car park outside. You decided not to wait for them to come and get you, and instead stepped out of your home and locked the door behind you.
"We were coming to get you, like a lady, (Y/N)," Arthur called from the street waving his hands in the air as he walked to you.
"John and Tommy have never treated me like a lady in my life," you said, "no reason to start today."
"That's why I was comin' for ya," Arthur said as he gave you a side hug. "You look perfect. Lizzie's already in the back seat. In you go."
He opened the door and ushered you in. You slid in, seeing Lizzie against the other door looking out the window and John in the middle seat giving you a wicked grin. Tommy was sitting in the passenger seat in front of you. Arthur shut your door as you settled in and he moved around the vehicle to the driver's seat.
"Hello hello," you said, nudging John and looking between everyone. "Nice night for criminal activity, eh?"
"Don't worry about the business part," Tommy said. "Just enjoy the party and look pretty."
"And keep my mouth shut?" You said, leaning back.
"And keep your mouth shut," Tommy answered.
"And what's to happen if I don't?" You challenged.
"Do you ever shut up?" Lizzie said as she looked at you. You looked over John and glared at Lizzie.
"We all don't have history of being paid to be discrete, Liz," you shot back. "Can't help your price is so low."
"Enough," Tommy said loudly. "We're all going to this party and you both will be quiet. We'll do our dealings and be out without a problem. I chose you because you're loyal and can handle business. Don't make me regret it."
The car was silent. After a few moments, Arthur cleared his throat and asked Tommy a question, breaking the hold on the car.
John looked to you, nudging your shoulder.
"You look good in that color," he said in a quiet voice as the conversation continued in the front seat. You smiled.
"I see you're still trying your charms," you said.
"No harm in it," he said, pulling a pick from his pocket and placing it in his mouth. "We've been both called to business."
"Why didn't you have your wife come?" You asked. "She's got to be more trustworthy than --"
You nodded to Lizzie, who was looking out the window. John's eyes softened.
"Can't be having both my favorite girls in danger at once," he said. "And someone's got to look after the children when I'm gone."
You wanted to melt, to feel the bloom of warmth that wanted to expand in your chest, but all you felt was cold.
"You'll never be gone, John," you said, nudging his shoulder with a sad smile. "Shelby's are too stubborn to die. You'll be a dirty old man making all the girls uncomfortable with your wink."
John gave a brief smile and rolled the pick in his mouth from one end of his smile to the other with his tongue.
"Maybe," he said noncommittally. "Until then, I'm here. With you. Might as well enjoy it."
You smiled and squeezed his arm before resting your head on his shoulder. You looked out the window to see Tommy's eyes meet yours in the side mirror. His face was perfectly blank but his eyes held a storm that you weren't sure of the cause.
----
The car arrived at a gorgeous large home surrounded by land just as dusk darkened the sky.
"A party?" Lizzie said. "We're dressed for London and going to a party."
"It's a good cover for business," Arthur said. "Little fun, little business, and dirt on those that stay the night."
"Oh," she said. "That sort of party."
You felt Lizzie shift uncomfortably in her seat and immediately felt on edge. You looked over and finally noticed her dress was very similar to yours, only a mustard color with brown beading. She picked at the beading near the bottom of her dress.
"We'll take care of ye," Arthur rumbled. "Stick close and smile and it'll be over before you know it."
"Who's to be matched with who?" You asked and fidgeted with your clutch. The car stopped in front of the house and a boy came to take the keys from Arthur.
Your question was ignored and the doors opened for you and Lizzie. You stepped out in your heels, feeling the gravel crunch below your feet. The game was on.
John exited the car on Lizzie's side and took her arm to escort her in. You nervously looked back to the house and felt a touch on your shoulder.
Tommy had lit a cigarette and was taking a long inhale of the smoke as his hand was outreached for yours. He nodded as the smoke rose from his mouth to his nose, disappearing back into his lungs. You smiled and took his arm, stilling yourself for a moment in preparation.
You and Tommy led the pack through the doors, shortly followed by John and Lizzie, and Arthur trailing behind. The house was massive and bright. Men talked in groups and women similarly dressed to you were peppered in. Dark corners held couples kissing and drugs. You watched people closely as Tommy led you to a side den and what you could guess was the host.
"Ah yes!" Tommy exclaimed, mentioning the man's name, but you were so nervous you immediately forgot it. "Beautiful home. Thank you for having us."
"Tommy Shelby," the man said cooly, leaning against a fireplace. "Thank you. I see you brought your brothers."
The man looked to be middle aged with a mustache. His brown suit was nice and he held a glass of liquor on ice. He looked intently at you and Lizzie, up and down like he was looking over a horse at the market.
"And who are these beauties?" He said as he clicked his tongue. You did your best not to drop your smile. "I told you I would provide the entertainment tonight."
"You did," Tommy said, "but we Shelby's prefer a bit of Birmingham with us wherever we go."
"I see why," the man said, holding his hand out to take yours. You let him.
"(Y/N), Pleasure. And this," you said, deflecting his eyes off of you, "is Lizzie."
Lizzie murmured her pleasantries and smiled and Tommy cleared his throat, bringing the man's attention back to him.
"Right," he said. "So shall we have a drink and talk business, or talk business and have a drink?"
"Tommy," the man jested. "Always to the point. I have a few other matters to attend to, so best you men get these ladies a drink before. Enjoy the party. I'll be back shortly."
The man walked away and your group was left to wander the party. Tommy touched the small of your back and led you out of the den. Your stomach was butterflies when you walked into a larger living area with multiple large ornate couches. He motioned for you to sit on the couch and John ushered Lizzie beside you.
"We'll find you two drinks," John said as he looked around the crowded room. "Stay here."
"You need three men to get five drinks?" Lizzie said dryly. "Sounds like a Shelby."
Tommy rolled his eyes before looking down at you both perched on the couch.
"We'll be back shortly," he said. "Just stay here and you'll get your drink."
"Gin," Lizzie sounded.
"Whiskey," you said after.
"Always whiskey," John said with a wink before the brothers left to find the alcohol.
"They're scoping out the layout," you said as you watched the crowd, "It's as much the alcohol and girl watching as it is the job."
Lizzie opened her mouth and then clamped it shut as she saw a man sit on the arm of the couch next to you. She smiled and touched your hand.
"I think I'm going to find my own drink," she said, looking from your eyes to behind you with a tight smile. You watched her leave the same direction the boys did and jumped when you realized a man was sitting on the arm of your seat, looking down at you like a predator.
"May I help you?" You said, leaning away from the man to look up at him.
"You shouldn't have been left alone," he said as he fingered the dark beading of your dress on your shoulder. "I can get you a drink. Are you a gin or vodka girl?"
"No thank you," you said, scooting into the middle of the couch to get away from his reach. "I have a drink on its way."
"Oh now," he said as he slipped onto the seat where you had sat. "No need not to be friendly."
His hand slid onto your thigh and played with the dress at your knee. Your teeth grinded together as you looked up at his smirk.
"I said no," you said. "Do you need to hear it again?"
The man's smirk slowly turned into a look of confusion as he looked down at your hand holding a small knife against his crotch. No one around you seemed to have noticed your interaction.
"(Y/N) I've got your whiskey--" John said as he barreled toward the couch holding drinks in both hands. He stopped directly in front of you when he noticed the man. His eyes grew wide as he looked down at your hand holding the knife before he gave you a careful look.
"Thank you, John," you said as you slid your knife back into your bag and reached for your drink. "I was just telling this man--"
"Roy," the man supplied in a daze. His eyes moved between you and John, who smirked down at you as he handed you your drink. Roy's hand slowly moved off of your leg and onto his own lap.
"Roy," you said, "that I already had someone to get me a drink."
Tommy and Arthur walked up behind John before Arthur passed him to sit beside you and Tommy looked at Roy over John's shoulder.
"Where's Liz off to?" Arthur said, his arm slung over your shoulder as he took a drink.
"She told me she was getting her own drink," you said evenly, meeting Tommy's hard eyes as he soaked in the situation.
"Right," Roy said, seemingly snapped out of his daze. "It looks like you have proper company. Nice to meet you."
"John," Tommy said, eyeing Roy's departure, "Go find Lizzie."
"Right," John said with a grin. "Let's hope she's not threatening to cut off a man's balls, too."
Arthur laughed. Tommy stiffly took the seat beside you, both hands holding drinks. You sipped yours and returned to watching the crowd, all too aware of how close you were next to Tommy.
Tommy quickly downed the first drink before putting the empty glass near the foot of the couch. You looked over at him curiously.
"How were you to cut off balls without a knife, (Y/N)?" He rumbled, drinking from his second glass slower.
"Who says I didn't have a knife, Tommy?" You said with a raised brow.
He hummed, running the glass across his lip before taking another drink. Arthur finished his drink and stood up to get another.
You had gotten used to an arm around you and shifted in your seat, growing anxious without the weight to ground you. You shook as you looked around, untethered while the rest of the party buzzed around you. A couple took the other side of the couch and it only unnerved you more.
You looked over at Tommy, who watched you silently, taking in your every movement with his cool blue eyes. You watched him claim a cigarette and matches from his pocket with his empty hand and give you his matches. He looked at you expectantly but didn't say anything.
You wrapped your fingers around a match and pressed it against the box, sparking a flame and letting it lazily caress the cigarette between his lips until it caught fire.
Tommy leaned into the corner of the couch with his drink in hand and his other arm on your shoulder, pulling you into his chest until you were draped over him. He reached around you, pulled the cigarette from his mouth, and blew the smoke above you both.
"You're shaking," he whispered into your ear. "Relax. And for fucks sake behave from now on."
You found yourself melting into his side, grateful for the touch. You people watched with him in comfortable silence until John returned with Lizzie on his arm and Arthur and the host in tow.
"Tommy!" The man said cheerfully, his cheeks much redder than before. "I found your entourage, but it looks like you snuck away for a moment's silence. I'm ready to talk business in my office if you are."
"I'm always ready for business," Tommy said, giving you a small squeeze before ushering you both to your feet.
"Great!" The man said. "Follow me."
The man turned to lead and Tommy rested his hand on your hip, pulling you beside him to follow. Lizzie scowled and burrowed into John's side as you passed. You slowed a step but Tommy's hand pressed into your hip to urge you forward at his side.
The man led your group to a study before and sat behind a large wooden desk. He pulled a decanter of alcohol from a cabinet, pulling out four glasses with it. He waved to the three seats in front of him.
Your boys took the three wing-back seats and Lizzie sat upon the arm of Tommy's seat in the middle. You decided to look at the library of books along the wall.
You heard them all talk, but you mostly paid attention to tone rather than words. You ran your fingers along the books and noticed most of them sounded scientific or mathematical in nature. A lot had to do with statistics. You froze as the tone shifted in the room. You looked over your shoulder with your hand still on the bookcase when you heard John call your name.
"Come sit over here, little bird," John said, using Harry's nickname for you, and patted his knee with a smirk. "You're making our friend nervous."
You smiled shyly and walked over to John before pausing above him. He patted a knee of his splayed legs again. You gritted your teeth before sitting on his right knee, your legs in between his and your hip against the arm of the chair. His hand wrapped around your waist and rested on your thigh as the conversation started again.
You tried to focus on the conversation about horses in front of you, but you felt John's hand loosen it's hold on your leg and move to play with the beading at your left shoulder. You turned slightly and shot him a look to stop but his eyes were intent on your skin.
John's brows furrowed and he tried moving the beading off your shoulder. You shrugged him off and whispered a hiss at him. He stopped for a moment and nodded for you to look ahead. You paused before doing so, feeling him lean forward behind you.
You froze in place when John slid his hand under the strap and it fell down your shoulder. You eyed Arthur and Tommy as John nuzzled your bare shoulder and pressed his lips to it. Arthur ran his tongue over his teeth in his closed mouth as he watched John. Lizzie perched on Tommy's chair smirking at you.
Tommy's jaw ticked but he didn't look over to you two once in his conversation. You slowly pressed your heel into John's instep until he hissed against your skin and moved the strap back onto your shoulder.
You closed your eyes, knowing full well what he discovered. Your tattoo. Even when you had gone swimming with him in the dead of night, clothes thrown to the edge of the pond, you had always been careful not to show him your shoulder. You hadn't worn low back dresses in years. You were sure people thought it was for modesty, but in truth you didn't want to show the world that you had a tattoo. You loved it, but it was for you and you knew how society treated tattooed men. You didn't want to be seen as a freak for your own.
You sat still as stone for the rest of the meeting, and John returned his hand to your lap. You could feel his cocky grin behind you and you fumed at the blatant disrespect of boundaries.
When the business wrapped up, the men all shook hands and said their pleasantries and you all were ushered back into the party. When the host drifted off, you twisted in John's arms and smacked this chest.
"Don't you ever touch me like that again," you growled, trying to keep your voice down. Tommy and Arthur moved between you two and glared at you both.
"What was that?" Arthur said and glared at John.
"Our (Y/N)'s marked," John said, licking his lips as he eyed you. "And it's not fresh. How many more surprises are you hiding under there?"
"Marked?" Arthur said, looking at you in confusion. "Like a tattoo? How'd you find someone to give you that?"
"You can find them," you said shortly. "This isn't about my tattoos, this is about you" you jabbed your finger at John's chest, "not respecting me. You have a wife."
"More than one, eh? The only way to get a good look at your shoulder was to play into what I'm seen as, innit?" John said and laughed. "No one asks when ol' John boy gets frisky. They continue on with business, and now I know your secret."
John's eyes sparkled as you pressed your lips into a thin line. Tommy watched you two closely for a moment before he stepped directly in between you.
"Right," he said, causing you both to step back to give him the space between. "We've done what we came here for. I would have said let's enjoy the party but no one can fucking behave long enough. We're done here, let's go home."
Lizzie laughed and Tommy raised a finger at her.
"You're not innocent, Liz," Tommy said, glaring at her. "Now let's get the fuck out of here."
You all followed Tommy out of the house like scolded children. A boy brought the car around and you all went back to the seats you had before.
The car was quiet. John was all too happy with himself beside you; Arthur looked bothered but confused as he drove and Tommy watched you too closely through the side window as you looked out into the dark.
"(Y/N)," Tommy said, breaking the silence as the car turned into the road from the long driveway, "what is your tattoo of?"
"It's not a branding or an allegiance, Tommy," you said combatively, hugging yourself. "I wanted it. Thought it was pretty. It's only meant for me."
"And what is it?" Tommy pressed, growing agitated. You glared at him through the side mirror.
"That's between me and whoever falls in my bed, innit?" You shot back.
"And me," John said teasingly. "Do I get to fall in your bed tonight, (Y/N), or are we still worried about Esme?"
You elbowed him hard in the ribs and he doubled as he clutched his side.
"And here I thought you were a good girl with bad company," Arthur said. "Turns out you have some secrets, don't you little bird?"
"A knife and a tattoo all in one night," Tommy mused. "I'll keep that in mind."
"Not my fault you got more than you bargained for," you said. "Isn't King Tommy supposed to have us all figured out, like? With his big brain?"
You stared defiantly at Tommy and he regarded you back. The ride was a quiet standoff between you and him the rest of the way. Lizzie scowled out the window the entire ride. When Arthur dropped her off she left the car without a word and went into her apartment without looking back.
You touched the door handle and opened your mouth to tell them you'd walk home from there when Tommy interrupted.
"Get out, I'll take (Y/N) home myself," Tommy said.
Arthur and John both started to protest. Tommy raised a hand, quieting them.
"I need a talk with our little bird," he said.
You let go of the handle as if it burned you and shrunk next to John in the back seat. He instinctively wrapped his arm over your shoulder.
"Tommy," Arthur protested.
"Out," Tommy said again before he opened his door and then yours.
"Night, John boy," you said softly as you unwrapped yourself from him to get out of the car.
"You haven't called me that in weeks," he murmured surprised. "Night, (Y/N). You'll be fine. Tommy's just being Tommy."
John eyes softened and he placed a soft kiss on the top of your head. You got out of the car and moved around Tommy to sit in the passenger seat. Tommy closed both doors.
John and Arthur reluctantly got out and moved aside as Tommy sat in the driver's seat. You could see John worrying his lip as they both watched as Tommy turned the ignition and drove you both down the road.
He drove until the brothers were out of sight, and then took a turn that was opposite of your home.
"I have a hard time placing you, (Y/N)," Tommy said, breaking the silence. "There are times you're strong and about men's business. And in the next moment you're young. Too young."
"Why can't I be both?" You ask.
Tommy didn't answer, instead he looked off into the distance and nodded.
"Why do you lock us all out of that head of yours?" You asked, knowing you wouldn't get a true answer. You passed a bridge and he slowed and moved to the side of the road and parked.
"I let someone clear out that which needs clearing out," he said stiffly, looking through his pockets for a cigarette.
"I'm not talking about Lizzie," you said gently. He stilled for a moment before continuing his search for a match. You pulled the matchbox from earlier out of your clutch and lit one and held it out for him.
"Why do you two hate each other?" He asked as he leaned over to light the cigarette and returned his gaze to you as he inhaled the smoke.
"We don't," you said quickly. "Or at least I don't hate her. I think in a way," you said as you blew out the match and fidgeted, "we both know there's only so many spaces for women in the Blinders, and we're not Shelby, so we've only so many places to fit."
"Insightful," Tommy said more to himself than you, "but young."
"I'm not that much younger," you grumble as he opened his door. "John and Ada's age."
"Young enough," he said and stepped out of the car. "Let's sit by the water and talk."
You got out and numbly followed him to the waterside, feeling the cool night air on your skin. Tommy laid his coat down on the bank and motioned for you to sit. You both looked at the water in front of you.
"You was awful cuddly with John tonight," he said finally.
"You told us nothin' of what we was doing and I was leaning on my friend to help me," you retorted. "You also saw me put him in place when I thought he was crossing the line--"
"When did you stop trusting me, (Y/N)," Tommy interrupted crossly. "Because most of this night taught me you don't. The knife."
He scoffed.
"Was used for its purpose when I was left behind," you retorted, turning to him in anger.
"Could have ruined us," he hissed.
"Don't dangle me like a prize and I won't have to defend myself," you hissed back. "Maybe I stopped trusting you when King Tommy decided no one was smart enough to know his plans."
"Drop the king bit," he snapped.
"Or what, Tommy?" You sneered. "You'll teach me my place? What is my place, Tommy, or do you not know yourself?"
"You are the most aggravating girl in bloody Birmingham," he said under his breath.
"Says the biggest git--"
Tommy's hand swung around and grabbed your jaw forcefully and his whiskey-heavy lips crashed into yours before you could process. His kiss took every bit of air out of your lungs and you fought your head as you kissed him back hungrily. Your tongues fought each other for dominance as his grip on your jaw tightened and pushed you away.
"What's your tattoo, (Y/N)?" He said testily as he looked you in the eye.
"What's this, Tommy?" You snapped back defiantly.
Tommy growled and let go of your chin with a jerk of his hand.
"So fucking young," he growled.
He stood up and dusted his pants off.
"Let's get you home," he said finally.
You glared up at him, watching him put his blank face on like armor. The window closed for seeing into Tommy Shelby's mind.
"Sure, Tommy," you scowled. "Let's just pretend this never happened, too, eh? Like you haven't tasted my lips."
You stood up and stomped off to the car, slamming the door closed as you collapsed onto the passenger seat. You crossed your arms and looked over, gathering a terrible idea.
You slid over and placed the shift between your knees like you had sat when Finn drove the day before.
Tommy slowly made his way up the waterbank, new cigarette in his mouth as he opened the door and got in. He looked at you with a raised brow when your shoulder bumped with his, but quickly rolled his eyes and started the car. You looked forward out of the window, arms crossed, trying not to look at him as he grabbed the shift and slammed it to first gear. His hand stayed on the shift stick the entire painfully quiet ride to your home. Neither of you would fold. You could feel his eyes on you at times but you refused to look at him.
Tommy parked the car in front of your home and turned it off. You moved to get out of the car but Tommy's warm hand dropped from the shift to your thigh as he blew out a breath in frustration.
"I didn't like it," he growled as you froze. You refused to respond or turn to him.
"You was awful cuddly with John tonight and I didn't like it," he growled with a clenched jaw.
You looked down at your lap as he let go of your leg and you nodded tightly. You slowly leaned to the door and opened it, letting yourself out into the night and into your warm apartment. You didn't breathe until you locked the door behind you.

Being the best friend of the Peaky Blinders headcanons
══════⊹⊱≼≽⊰⊹══════
Tommy would probably be a difficult best friend to keep in touch with
He is always deep in business so if you were not a part of the Peaky Blinders yourself, it would take long periods of time for you to see each other
When you finally managed to get together for a drink or two though, it would be as if you had never been apart at all
You would both drink and laugh, talk deep and talk light, about everyone and everything. You would want to know how were things going with his family, how were everyone and he would probably be very curious about your life also
He always has a lot on his mind, but he would not find it hard to speak to you and open up even that only for a bit, because he knew you could give him comfort even without knowing the truth behind his plans and living
He loves you with all his heart and want you to stay as far as you can from his way of life and his way of doing business. If he could, he would actually want you to stay away from him, because it would be safer. But he knows you're not letting that happen. You're too stubborn for that
One of the best memories you have together are the ones from his wedding day with Grace
It was an important day to him and you were there, getting to see the passion he had for that woman in his eyes
Later in the party at Tommy's house you drank with John, talked politics with Ada and even shared a dance with Arthur. You liked your best friend's family very much and they were quite fond of you also
As well as Arthur, Tommy asked you to make a speech and Grace was more than happy with it, she was a nice woman
You gave everything you had in those five minute speaking
Arthur is someone you would love to have around from the moment you two met
He is rough and quite stubborn, but he also has a sweetness that gets to you and makes you warm up to him quite fastly
You became best friend shortly afterwards
From there, you spend all the bloody time together
Some nights you would make bets at who can drink the most in The Garrison, which would always be an enigma to whom would be the winner
In others, you two would meet maybe at your house or his just to talk, really. Just pure, random conversation that always makes you both feel better to get through the week
Patching him up after fights would be quite common
Whenever he is overwhelmed by memories of the war and find himself in a terrible state, his brothers would go to you. They knew you were the one whom Arthur really listened to, even though they were family
In those situations you took care of him, made him talk to get it out of his chest. Hugged him tight like he needed and comforted him with gentle, affectionate words
You defend him when John laughs at his expense, even though it's all a joke
He loves you for that
You and John are a duo so powerful and bonded that you could often be seen around the betting house
You both joke at everything, really
He is a funny guy and you have a sense of humour quite easy to please, so it would be a instant match
You can often be found drunk together at The Garrison, singing and well, joking around with other people
You resemble each other in quite some aspects so it would be easy for you two to fight now and then
This fights would be hard to watch. Hard stuff would probably be said
But it wouldn't take long for one of you to apologize and you going back to normal
He invites you for all the Blinders's events, because he thinks you make everything funnier and less boring
Your favorite thing to do together is just to find a quiet place somewhere and share a smoke, in silence and peace you both rarely get to have on your rushed days
Polly doesn't trust people easily
So it would be a long while before she even considered calling you a friend
But with baby steps, good decisions and quite some patience, you manage to make her see that you can be someone that she can rely on
And she does, actually being happy for having found someone loyal and that can really be trusted without having any interests behind the simple reality said
He invites you to her house a lot
Whenever she has a fight with Michael or the boys have done something that got to her nerves or upset her, you're there to listen
She asks your opinon on a lot of things. Even things related to business, things she would not ask anyone else. You love that she trusts you completely
Your friendship is so strong that the Shelby brothers are to say at least, surprised about it
Since they were little they didn't remember Polly having such a close friendship with someone so it was quite strange to them
But you're around so much that in no time they are already greeting you and inviting you to The Garrison later in the evening
When Polly finally got Michael back after all those years, the happiness in her had made you also incredibly happy because you knew how much she missed her children

Shelbys at Somme: Chapter 8
Thomas X Reader
3744
Summary: Tensions grow between Grace and Reader when Grace is informed one of her co-workers is dead. Reader meets Ada.
by @adventuresintooblivion
Grace was due for a rendezvous yesterday, but she hadn’t a moment of free time until the Garrison Pub closed its doors two hours after it was supposed to. She had called into the station, but no one answered, which led to her practically sprinting to the nearest cabby who might take her to see Inspector Campbell.
After an all too expensive ride, Grace strode into Inspector Campbell’s office, clutching her purse between herself and the world. At first he didn’t even look up from his papers. It wasn’t until Grace cleared her throat that he spoke.
“You’re late.” He slowly looked up. Something about his posture had changed since last Grace saw him. While before he had stood tall and proper, now he held a tension in his movements.
Grace glanced down. “The Pub kept me working late yesterday. Everything was closed by the time I was free to contact you.”
Inspector Campbell grumbled, “You could’ve come over.”
She raised her eyebrow. “To your house Sir? Isn’t that dangerous?”
Not to mention wildly inappropriate?
The Inspector ran his hand through his thinning hair. “Yes, I suppose you’re right. But your father would want me to look after you, so I can’t have you missing deadlines like this.”
“If you don’t mind my asking, why didn’t you send anyone now?”
It was his turn to break eye contact. “Something has happened. I’m not sure how big it is, so I didn’t want to endanger your cover just in case.”
“What happened?”
He grimaced, “We questioned that girl you gave us a picture of. We’d been keeping an eye on her, but when she contacted Thomas and stuck around we thought he might be trying to fence the guns through her.”
Grace felt blood rushing in her ears as the world dropped from underneath her. “W...Who did she turn out to be?”
Inspector Campbell shrugged, “Y/F/N. She was an old war buddy of his. Worked in his company as what they called a Runner. Distracted the Germans while they dug.”
“She joined the army and fought?”
The Inspector nodded but didn’t elaborate. He started shuffling through papers until finally he held one out for Grace. When she took it there was a list of names with Y/N’s picture next to it. Each name had a different occupation listed next to it along with locations.
Grace frowned, “Is this all her?”
He shrugged, “Supposedly, though she’s never done jail time for anything. I’m half convinced most of these she just made for fun.”
“So how did you get her to come in? I didn’t think she’d be the type to offer up information for free.” Grace folded the paper and tucked it away in her purse.
Inspector Campbell’s features darkened. “Oh, it wasn’t free. She gave us no choice, we had to corner her. When she tried to escape, she killed Matthew.”
She froze, “Matthew’s dead?”
He nodded. “The funeral is this weekend. Due to your current assignment, I can’t allow you to attend, but we are all pitching in to help his wife and son. At least until she can figure something out.”
Grace nodded and practically threw what little cash she had on hand at him. She’d always liked Matthew. They’d bonded during the late hours working to neutralize the IRA. When Inspector Campbell had offered to take them both to Birmingham, Grace had even helped him pack up his whole family. Now he was gone.
Something about the situation didn’t all she could think about was her friend’s tired smile. “Please tell me you at least got something.”
He paused for too long but Grace was desperate for an answer, “We have a possible location.”
She nodded. It was all she needed to keep going, to not run out of here right now and give Y/N a sound lashing.
〜
The next day Grace wiped her hands on her apron, her foul mood having settled in to stay. Her mind kept wandering back to images of Matthew. While Inspector Campbell hadn’t gone into details about his death, her imagination provided plenty of gory details for her to mull over.
She knew Y/N was upstairs. Hell, the topic of last night’s search party was all she heard about all day. Details were fuzzy at best but from what she could gather Tommy had roused half the Peaky Blinders in the late hours of the night to track her down.
Grace tried to strike up conversation multiple times with her patrons, but they were all dead on their feet. Several of them went so far as to nap next to the pints they’d been nursing moments before. Even Harry’s stern glares weren’t enough to keep them awake.
Yet Grace was determined. If she couldn’t get information from them, she’d get it from Thomas when he returned.
〜
It was late afternoon by the time Y/N awoke. For the first few moments she lay there perfectly still and enjoyed her last couple minutes of peace. Then she shifted and it was all over. Her muscles spasmed, causing her to lose her breath for the briefest moment.
“Well, damn, I was wondering when you’d join us.” Nearby a woman sat with a book splayed open on her lap.
Y/N slowly sat up, her arms shaky beneath her.
The woman stood suddenly. "Hey now, don't you think about getting up alright? Tommy gave me strict orders to keep you off your feet."
Y/N chuckled, "Thank you for the attention, Miss…?"
She waved away Y/N's feeble attempts to dismiss her, "The name is Ada Shelby."
A smile spread across Y/N's lips. "So you're Ada? I was wondering when I'd get to meet you."
She nodded proudly, "The one and only. Now listen here, missy. You'll not get out of this bed until you're healthy again. You hear me?"
"Yes, Ma'am." Y/N tried to hide her growing smile.
Ada ruffled Y/N's hair. "Don't be cheeky with me. You're the one that got caught by a copper of all things. Now, what would you like to do today?"
Y/N shrugged. "Just grab me a couple books and I'll be fine. If you need to go do something I don't need to be babysat."
"Well, while that might be the case I'm not supposed to really be out and about either." Ada fidgeted with the ties on her dress.
Y/N raised her eyebrow. "I'd ask how come, but it doesn't look like you're comfortable sharing."
"I know I can trust you, otherwise you wouldn't be living above the Garrison right now. No it's just… I haven't said it aloud yet. Not to anyone except Aunt Pol."
Y/N shrugged, "I mean, I'm not really sure where I stand. So really, you don't have to tell me if you don't want to."
Ada sat back, drawing her shawl closer around herself. After a moment Y/N noticed it was the same as Pol's just a different color. Wonder which one of them knits.
Then Ada spoke so softly Y/N almost missed it, "I'm pregnant."
The words hung in the air allowing their weight to settle as the implications slowly became clear.
Y/N bit her lip, "And you've only told Pol. Yikes."
She glanced down, "Yeah, he's missing too. Do you think.. He’ll come back?"
"I'm not exactly the expert on that. “Y/N paused for a moment. “But I did also come back from the dead. That’s a weird case though, so I’m not sure I’m the best person to ask."
Ada smiled sadly at her. "You really came back for Tommy?"
Y/N blushed, "Don't say it too loudly. You're gonna make me sound like even more of an idiot."
She burst out laughing, the color returning to her cheeks. "Come on, let's get you some breakfast."
"I didn't get a chance to buy any groceries yet." Y/N bit her lip.
Ada bounced back up excitedly. "Don't you worry about that. I stopped by the market on the way here."
"I hope you're not hurting for money then, because I have absolutely no way to pay you back right now." Y/N felt a pit forming in her stomach. Or pay rent for that matter.
Ada turned towards the kitchenette, the room so small Y/N caught herself checking to make sure the blankets wouldn't get caught underfoot. She rifled through cupboards and moments later the smell of food filled the space between them.
Ada finally answered, "Don't worry about paying for anything, Y/N. Tommy would lose his head if anyone asked you for a dime."
Y/N shifted around until she was sitting at the foot of the bed, closer to Ada. "Yes, making a deal with the Devil is the perfect way to never worry about anything ever again."
Ada threateningly waved a wooden spoon at her, "You calling my brother the Devil? Cause you'd be right."
They burst into laughter, an easy chatter formed between them. Ada remained for a large part of the day. Eventually the sun began to set and the two women were interrupted by a knock on the door.
Thomas waited barely a moment before slowly poking his head in. “I hope everyone here is decent.”
Y/N rolled her eyes. “It’s not gonna be the time you’ve seen me in my underwear, Thomas.”
Ada cast her a somewhat scandalized look but was quickly distracted by Thomas’ soft chuckle. “Yet you looked manlier than most the men you were changing next to.”
Y/N gasped dramatically as she clutched at her heart. Thomas’ chuckle rose into a full on laughter.
“What kind of sorcery is this? I haven’t seen you smile like that since you found out John tried to stick it in the wrong hole his first time.”
“John did what?” Y/N’s mouth fell open in astonishment.
Ada glanced between the two shrugging, “He said his reasoning was that ‘that’s how animals did it.’”
Thomas shook his head. “I still can’t fucking believe-”
Laughter filled the room, however the mood was dampened quickly as Y/N groaned. Thomas rushed forward, kneeling beside the bed while Ada stood nearby frozen as they waited.
Finally, after catching her breath, Y/N grimaced, “Oh stop your fussing. A good laugh is worth a few loose ribs.”
“You’re supposed to be healing,” Thomas growled.
She dismissed his concern with a small wave, “If I spend all my time healing I won’t have any left for living. Stop worrying so much about me Shelby, I’ll be fine.”
He shook his head before turning towards Ada, “Would you mind giving us some privacy? I have to talk to Y/N about a couple things.”
Ada huffed, but soon her steps could be heard receding down the stairs.
Thomas slowly turned back to Y/N. “How are you holding up?”
Y/N shrugged, glancing out the window into the abyss. When did it get so dark?
He took her hand in his, so gently she almost didn’t recognize his touch. “Y/N, don’t spare me the details. I can’t do my job if you don’t tell me how bad it is.”
“What exactly is your job when it comes to me?” Her voice was the barest whisper.
There was a long pause as the answer hung in the air, the one they needed to be said before either of them could move on. It was their last chance to escape from each other; if he pushed her away now, she would leave. Disappear. Once again becoming the ghost of his past.
Thomas bowed his head, pressing his lips to the back of her hand. “I’m going to look after you.”
Only the slightest tremor in her voice betrayed her, “You don’t owe me that, Thomas.”
“Not everything is about payment, Y/N?”
She raised her eyebrow. “Is this the same Birmingham that I left five years ago?”
He released an amused hum from somewhere deep in his throat, finally looking up at her. The dark circles had etched themselves deeper beneath his eyes. A tightness around the corners reminded Y/N of the darkest days in the trenches. Instinctively she reached up to cup his cheek and brush the worry away with her thumb.
“Rough day, Tommy?”
It was as if the whole room released a deep sigh, “It always is.”
Y/N gestured to the chair Ada had been using, “Wanna talk about it?”
Thomas ignored the chair and sat at the foot of her bed, his hip pressed against her leg and his elbows resting on his knees. Old habits die hard, don’t they?
He gathered his thoughts, but soon he was catching her up on a myriad of events. About the horse and the unfortunate turn of events that had taken place. The guns. Thomas’ meeting with Inspector Campbell and how close he had come to throttling the man. Danny’s head being payment for the death of a man he’d caused during an episode of shell shock.
For the most part Y/N listened, offering advice where it seemed to fit, until he brought up Danny, “They want you to kill him with witnesses?”
He nodded. “I’ve already taken care of that. A casing full of sheep brains.”
Y/N couldn’t stop the smile that played across her lips. “This is why I love you. So do you have a good hiding place for the guns or are they still at the docks?”
Thomas’s mind went blank, then suddenly every thought he’d ever had felt like it was clashing together as he registered what Y/N had just said. His heart was pounding in his ears. The room was too hot and not warm enough all at once. It took every ounce of control he had left to control his breathing enough to speak.
“W...what did you just say?”
“Hmmm? I was asking if you had a good hiding spot for the guns yet.”
“No...Um, before that.”
Y/N furrowed her brow, “I was asking if they demanded witnesses.”
Thomas finally let himself look at her. There was no indication that she was messing with him. No tell tale smirk or signature twinkle in her eye. She just sat there confused on why he was asking her to repeat herself. He ran his fingers through his hair.
His voice was gruff when he finally answered, “No, I don’t have a place picked out for the guns yet.” He honestly already had several ideas, but he couldn’t conjure up a single one right now.
Y/N glanced around the room thinking for a moment. “Why don’t you put them in Danny’s grave?”
“He’s not actually dead. I thought I made that clear.”
“Yeah, but if he was dead you’d dig him a grave come hell or high water. So you’ll have to dig him one anyways so that no one gets suspicious. Plus, this won’t be related to any other contraband that the Peaky Blinders deal with so if someone snitches on you, it won’t be there.”
Thomas blinked slowly before he nodded. “That is actually quite brilliant. I’m a little disappointed I didn’t come up with that myself.”
Y/N shrugged, “One of my many random skills, hiding things.”
Thomas wasn’t exactly sure what to say about that, but he had one last thing to tell her. After her slip-up in the previous moment, the words felt like poison on his lips. “I’ve also asked Grace to the races.”
“Did you just need her for a plus one?” Y/N raised her eyebrow.
Just say yes.
“No, Billy Kimber owns the race tracks, and we’re expanding. Making legal money and all that.” He pressed his lips against his clasped hands, wishing he didn’t have to answer what came next.
Y/N frowned, confused. “And what does this have to do with Grace?”
Thomas sighed. “Mr. Kimber is known to enjoy sampling the pleasures of women. She asked to work for me, so I plan on offering her up to him as part of the bargain.”
“Did you ask her if she was ok with that?”
“No.”
She smacked his shoulder, a sharp sting exploding from his arm. “Tommy!”
“Hey, don’t hit me, Ms. Cracked Ribs.”
She shook her finger threateningly at him. “It’s Ms. Broken Ribs to you, and I’ll smack you as much as I damn well please. You can’t just go offering up a girl’s dignity like that.”
Thomas turned and grabbed her hands in his, preventing any further retaliation. “She asked to work for me, Y/N.”
Y/N growled, “She’s not from the underbelly of Birmingham. Or any other city for that matter. You can tell from a god damned mile away. Shit like this ruins women.”
He paused. “You may be right, but I don’t have anything else he wants.”
She let out a deep sigh. “What were you gonna offer him?”
He told her, and she nodded. They sat in silence for a while as they mulled over what to do about all this. At the end of the day they both knew if he brought Grace she would end up having to go with Kimber sooner or later. He expected it to say the least. And it wasn’t just Grace, any woman Thomas brought would be offered up as a bargaining chip.
Finally Y/N spoke, “She may have to go with him, but she doesn’t have to stay with him.”
“And break the deal?”
She shook her head, “Save Kimber. Like tell him she has something.”
He smirked at her. “So much for preserving dignity.”
Y/N shrugged. “At least she won’t have to sleep with him.”
Thomas glanced away, “Yeah.”
Y/N glanced down. Her hands were still in his, though his grip had loosened into something more casual. A small thrill went through her as she realized how much smaller her hands were compared to his.
She stammered as she spoke, “It’s getting late.”
Thomas took a deep breath broken out of his thoughts. “Yeah it is. I’ll head out and give you some peace. If you need anything, come get me.” He stood, letting Y/N’s hands slip from his grasp.
The air was cool on her skin compared to his touch. She found herself following him with her gaze.“Come get you? I thought you lived at the Shelby house?” she asked.
He paused. “I’m going to be staying in the room next door for a while, until you’re better at least.” And with that he was gone.
〜
Y/N awoke in the late hours of the night. Darkness had escaped it’s daily chains, exploded from every nook and cranny and coated the room in a thick film. It took her a moment to shake off the disorientation before she remembered where she was.
Then she heard what had woken her. Through the wall she heard a cry. She couldn’t tell at first what it was for, but then it came again. Thomas.
She stood slowly, pain shooting up her back with every step as she shuffled out of her room and down the hallway. When she finally reached the rickety door she pressed her ear against it.
“NO...Freddie!”
That was enough. Y/N pounded on the door. On a normal day with the noise of people, it would’ve been deep and resounding. But now it was so deafening she caught herself wincing as she hit the wood.
A bewildered voice answered, “Wha..Who’s there?”
“Thomas it’s me. Open up.”
A shuffling sound and rattle later the door opened slowly. Thomas blinked at her blearily with bloodshot eyes. Y/N waited patiently for him to come back to reality just enough.
He asked groggily, “Is everything ok?”
“You’re having nightmares.”
Thomas stiffened, glancing around as if the whole world might be listening. He was about to answer when Y/N stepped forward, gently placing her hand on his chest.
His skin was hot and damp, the sweat having left a small layer that made him glisten in the barest of light. The air inside the room was hot as it poured through the crack in the door, trying to escape.
He placed his hand over hers. “What’re you doing?”
She looked up at him, somehow finding his eyes in the darkness. “Let me in.”
“She says at the entrance of the Devil’s den.” A soft rumble rolled from deep within his chest, a sleepy laugh.
“If you think I’m not a devil myself then I really need to jog your memory.”
“Y/N.”
Every ounce of fight in him suddenly dissolved away. After so many years of nightmares. After so long in the darkness. After watching her die a thousand times in his dreams. He had no will left to say ‘No’.
Y/N pushed her way inside, careful not to bump into anything that could make her fall. The room was much smaller than hers, and the window wasn’t open even the slightest, accounting for the heat.
As she walked inside she let her hand fall from his chest to intertwine with his fingers. Thomas let her lead him back towards the bed. It was actually smaller than the one she had in the other room, but that didn’t stop her from laying down and pressing her back against the wall.
She waved for him to join her, “Come on, Thomas. Before the room becomes freezing again.”
His brows furrowed as he tried to process what was going on. “I don’t think this will help your ribs heal.”
“Just shut up and get in here.”
He crawled in slowly, careful not to jostle her. Thomas paused before laying his head down. Y/N finally got tired of waiting and slid back onto the bed proper and maneuvered him until his head rested on her stomach.
Her fingers ran through his hair as he mumbled, “This isn’t hurting you?”
“The broken ones are higher up. And while I’m pretty sure any doctor would be shitting themselves right now, I’m fine.”
“Y/N,” he protested.
“Hush now, and get some sleep.”
After a few moments he chuckled, “My feet are hanging off the edge a bit.”
She hummed as sleep reclaimed her, “We’ll just have to sleep in mine tomorrow.”
“The scandal.”
“Damn right.”

SERIES MASTERLIST
PART ONE. PART TWO. PART THREE.
After your panic attack in the alleyway, Bonnie took you home. You spent the day resting, at Bonnie’s request. Tommy was made aware of your situation by Polly, asking her after Bonnie had finished talking to him and left with your purse and coat.
Tommy liked you; you worked hard, did your job well, and never caused any trouble. When you first arrived, you started as a secretary for Michael and it was quickly made clear that you could do much more for the company. Tommy never gave you an official job title, because you did it all, the legal part of the business that. You worked closely with Michael, monitoring the books, and meeting with businessmen to work out deals. While Michael was very good at his job and good with numbers, he made it a point for you to double-check his work every evening. You knew he was doing it to try to flirt with you, he never had any errors yet always insisted for you to check because “Today might have been the day I messed up. You are pretty distracting.” Never once had he messed up.
Floating back down to reality after flashing back to that memory, you stared blankly across the kitchen table to where the chair sat vacantly. You and Michael would have breakfast together every morning, letting absolutely nothing stop the tradition, even if it was just tea on a busy morning. You loved Michael immensely. He was completely opposite of you, he was your perfect match. No matter how bad the business got you both had each other. After John’s death and Michael’s shooting, he proposed with a shiny diamond ring, the recent traumatic event making him realize he wanted to spend the rest of his life with you. The two of you were in love at one point but you couldn’t pinpoint where exactly it ended. Maybe it never even ended, maybe you would never know.
Arriving to work the next day, Tommy called you into his office.
“Prudence, how are you feeling? If you need more time off, just ask, I don’t want you back if you’re not ready.”
“I’m fine Tommy. Thank you though.”
Motioning for you to sit down, he began to speak again with a small smile, “The Gold boy cares for you. Burst in here yesterday telling me that he was taking you home and you wouldn’t be returning until you were ready. Didn’t know he could get that aggressive outside of the boxing ring.”
“We’re just friends Tommy, nothing more.”
Tommy smirks, “Sure, Prudence. Now get to work. And if you need something, ask.”
You left Tommy’s office, heading into your own, eager to dig into your work and keep your mind off your troubles.
The week passed quickly, Friday approached much to everyone's joy. That evening you and Ada got drinks, conversation flowing easily amongst the two of you. You and Ada had always been close, the first one in the family to welcome you with open arms. Being in the Garrison you knew no one would bother either of you, it was Blinder territory.
“So, Prudence, I’ve noticed you and Bonnie have gotten close, he’s a cute one, hard to believe he’s a boxer. He looks like he couldn’t hurt a fly.”
Stifling laughter, “Jesus Ada, do I need to write up a bulletin that says he and I are just friends? Everyone seems to think we’re together. And yes, he’s very nice.”
Laughing, Ada asks, “Well why aren’t you two together? You are single since Michael is being a prick. You deserve happiness, and Bonnie clearly makes you happy.”
“I don’t know Ada. I still care for Michael, even if I shouldn’t. And Bonnie is incredible, but I just don’t know.”
“You think too much, Pru. Turn off your brain for a minute and let your heart make the decisions.”
Pondering for a moment, “You know what, I will.”
The universe must have heard you because in walks Bonnie Gold, high off adrenaline after just winning a boxing match. Not expecting you to be there, Bonnie had to do a double-take when he saw you.
Approaching you with arms wide, Bonnie yells, “There’s my girl!” Engulfing you in a hug and spinning you as you laugh into his neck, arms secure around you.
Setting you down, you look up at his brightly smiling face, “I don’t think I need to ask if you won or not, your smile says it all.”
“Were you doubting me, Ms. Jones?” Bonnie says with a laugh.
You laugh, “Of course not! What’s the prize this time?”
Bonnie responds quickly, “You are.” Behind you, you hear Ada choke on her drink.
“Very funny Bonnie. You’re the winner here, what would you like?”
“I’m glad you asked. I want a dance.”
“Are you sure you don’t have a concussion? I don’t dance.” You used to love dancing. You and Michael would dance late at night together, sometimes it was the only time you had together. Now, dancing had lost its sparkle.
He laughs wholeheartedly, “Well you do tonight. Although I’m willing to take a raincheck, but only if you come with me to the bonfire later.”
After every won fight by Bonnie, Aberama would have a bonfire to celebrate the win with friends. You had been invited in the past with Michael but never had the pleasure of attending.
“You have yourself a deal, Mr. Gold. Let’s go.” Telling Ada goodbye, you follow Bonnie out of the bar hand in hand.
Arriving at the camp you see people mingling amongst themselves. You notice Aberama chatting with one of his daughters. You smile and wave at him to yourself for a bit as you sat on a bench observing the party near the fire that shone bright and warm. Everyone was kind and enjoying themselves, congratulating Bonnie on yet another win under his belt.
Later in the evening after people started to leave, Bonnie walked over to you on the bench. Holding his hand out, “I believe you owe me a dance. I made sure to wait until people left so you wouldn’t be nervous with people watching.”
Laughing, you put your hand in his, him pulling you up off the bench easily. Your hand still in his, you notice his bruised knuckles, dried blood only present on one hand.
“Bonnie, your hands. Do they hurt?”
“No, dove. I’m used to it. Don’t think that’s going to get you out of dancing with me.” Bonnie says with a smile. All he wanted was a dance with you, nothing more.
You and Bonnie started to dance by the fire in silence, swaying easily to an imaginary tune. Dancing was by no means your favorite pastime anymore but with Bonnie, it was easy and enjoyable, especially since he was thoughtful enough to wait for people to be gone. He noticed how uneasy you were around strangers and wanted you to feel comfortable, especially with him, always.
Breaking the comfortable silence you asked, “So, is this a good enough prize?”
Bonnie looks down at you, “It’s perfect.”
“Are you sure I couldn’t make it better?” You said gazing up at him.
“How would you do that?”
“Like this.” You lean up onto your toes, kissing Bonnie softly.
Pulling away, Bonnie blushes a deep shade of red. You tease him with a smile, ”Are you scared of me, fighter boy?”
Bonnie smiles down at you, arms tightening around your waist, “No, that made it better. Do it again.”
Unable to tell him no and not wanting to say no, you kiss him again. Despite receiving no oxygen, your lungs felt light like you were on a cloud. Kissing someone never felt so right. You were finally happy again.

A Tragic Birthday
REQUEST: Could you do an imagine where the reader is a Shelby sister and Tommy’s favourite sibling and one day a deal goes wrong or something and she dies but kinda how grace died, in Tommy’s arms and it’s all hectic. Thanks:)
I was going to take a little break (only to the weekend) because tumblr was stressing me out and annoying me but when I started this, I couldn’t stop and I don’t like sitting on fics.
TW: Death
WORD COUNT: 2681
[PART TWO]
It was (Y/N)’s eighteenth birthday coming up in a week and it was safe to say that she was excited. (Y/N) had been looking forward to that day since her older brother Tommy had promised her a large party to celebrate the year before, and now that it was literally only days away she couldn’t stop buzzing about it, no doubt irritating her older siblings.
(Y/N) was the youngest of the Shelby siblings, a few years younger than Finn and was primarily raised by her Aunt Polly and her eldest brothers Arthur and Tommy. (Y/N) and Tommy were the closest between the siblings and had a special bond, that none of the others could replicate with their youngest sibling but that didn’t mean that she wasn’t close to her other siblings, because she was. In fact, it could be said that she had a special thing with each of her siblings; with Ada, they were close because they were the only girls in the family, Finn was the closest in age to her and they grew up as each other’s best friend, Arthur was the closest thing to a father she had and (Y/N) knew if she needed comforting then he would be the person she went to and John was someone she could rant to without judgment and he was always willing to help her out whenever she got in a sticky situation.
But the bond (Y/N) had with Tommy was different and there was no doubt that they were each other’s, favourite siblings. When their mother had died, Tommy had taken on the role as her primary caretaker, he changed her nappies, bottle-fed her and pretty much did anything a father would do. Polly had told her about how when she was a baby, Tommy would get a large piece of fabric and wrap her in it and secure her to his chest so that her cheeks rested on his chest because she would cry whenever she wasn’t being held by him and that it allowed him to keep her calm and content while he got some work done.
Just as much as (Y/N) hated being away from Tommy, Tommy hated being away from (Y/N) just as bad. He was overly protective when she was born, only allowing his Aunt Polly to get involved and help him out because despite thinking he knew everything, Tommy most definitely did not know how to handle a baby, especially not a newborn but he learnt and adapted and became a dad to her.
(Y/N) were three when Arthur, Tommy and John had to leave and go to war and Tommy to this day still has nightmares of how she screamed and cried to the point where she was almost sick at the train platform where he and the hundreds of other men from Small Heath were leaving from. (Y/N) didn’t understand what war was or why were her brothers were leaving but she did understand that her Tommy was leaving and she hated it.
Tommy had made a thousand promises to (Y/N) as he held her in his arms that day on the platform, repeatedly promising to come back alive and well and that he would never abandon her again and Tommy wasn’t sure if he was going to be able to keep them but he made it his goal to come back to her and the rest of his family.
But he didn’t break those promises and four years later, he was sobbing into the dress of a seven-year-old (Y/N), who was crying just as hard into his neck. The only time (Y/N) ever left Tommy’s arms the rest of that day was to hug her other brothers but other than that, (Y/N) was stuck to Tommy’s side. She was silent at first, slightly awkward around her brother who she hadn’t seen in years but it didn’t take long for her to become comfortable and start to quietly mutter into Tommy’s ear about everything he had missed whilst he was away and Tommy sat there in shock as she did so, marvelling at how much his little girl has grown. When he had left, she had just started to string sentences together but now she could speak in full sentences and was chatty, something he guessed she picked up from Ada.
That night as (Y/N) was curled up into a ball asleep beside him, Tommy cried once again. He was glad he was back home and alive but he knew nothing was going to be the same anymore but he was determined to keep things as normal as possible for her whilst she grew up and he was going to create a good life and world for her to live in.
And now eleven years after he’s returned home from the war, he’s pushed all his work to the side to prepare for the birthday of his little munchkin. Tommy had been dealing with an issue for the past week which involved one of his clients thinking he was overpaying for the Peaky Blinders services and was now demanding a refund. One that obviously Tommy refused to give.
Tommy called in the person who had knocked on the door, not even bothering to look up from the paperwork he was looking through.
“Hello to you too, Tommy.” The person said as they stepped into the office, moving to sit in one of the chairs that sat in front of Tommy’s desk.
Tommy grinned when they spoke up, instantly recognising the voice,
“Good morning (Y/N), what have I done to be blessed with your presence this early in the morning?”
“I have the finalised cost list for the party.” Tommy pushed his other work to the side and took the piece of paper from (Y/N)’s fingers and skimmed his eyes over it, letting out a low whistle at the final amount,
“You plan on bleeding me dry eh?”
(Y/N) rolled her eyes and smiled, “Don’t even try it. I know my party costs less than what the Garrison re-opening did.”
“How do you know how much the Garrison cost?” Tommy raised an eyebrow.
“I just do.” (Y/N) raised her eyebrows, a smug look on her face.
“Stop tricking Arthur into letting you see the company files” Tommy pointed a non-threating finger at his youngest sister who only rolled her eyes.
(Y/N) bit her lip in nervousness before she spoke up, “It’s not too expensive, is it? I can remove some stuff if you want!”
Tommy got up from his seat and walked around his desk and leant on it, patting (Y/N) on the head, “It’s not expensive, don’t worry, I was only teasing I’m sorry. You don’t turn eighteen everyday eh?”
“You’re the best Tommy!” (Y/N) leapt up and tightly hugged her brother.
“I know.”
Tommy laughed at (Y/N)’s scoff.
“Any plans for today?” Tommy asked as he went back around his desk and sat back down.
“Ada’s taking me down to London to pick up my dress.”
“Hmm, spending the whole day?”
“I think so. I mean we might as well. Karl and Finn are coming along too so we should be able to find something to do.” (Y/N) made her way to the door.
“Have fun.”
“Will do!” She called over her shoulder as she left his office
It was the day before (Y/N)’s birthday and the clients of Tommy’s that thought they were being scammed have only become an irritant to Shelby brothers, making threats and destroying property has become their form of revenge and attention-grabbing at the moment but none of them could do anything at that moment, all three of them making a promise to their youngest sister not to do anything gang related on the day off or the day before her birthday. (Y/N) desperately not wanting her birthday to be ruined and her brother understood and promised her that they wouldn’t. It was bugging Tommy that he had to wait on retaliating on them but he told himself years ago that his family came above everything else, especially his (Y/N).
On the morning of her birthday, (Y/N) slipped out of her bed and crawled into Tommy’s, his arm automatically wrapping her shoulder as she curled into his side. This was a semi-common occurrence between the two of them, originating from when Tommy started to try and put (Y/N) in her own bed in her own room for the night when she was a year old but it only took a few hours before (Y/N) was climbing out of her bed or Tommy himself took her back to his room. Though it had become less of a thing as (Y/N) grew up as her room was pretty much the only place that she could get peace and quiet and privacy from her wild family. (Y/N)’s room became her sanctuary.
“Good morning, Tommy!” (Y/N) chirped
“G’morning princess.” Tommy lit himself a cigarette, “Happy birthday.”
“Thank you.”
“Here.” Tommy had pulled out a jewellery box from the draw in his bedside table and held it out to her.
“What’s this?” (Y/N) didn’t open the box straight away.
“My gift to you.”
“I thought the party was your gift to me”
“Take the gift (Y/N) or I’ll throw it in the bin.”
“Alright alright, christ almighty.”
(Y/N) slowly opened the box and gasped at what laid inside. It was a diamond necklace, simple yet elegant. Exactly (Y/N)’s style.
“Oh, Tommy. It’s gorgeous, thank you.”
“Glad you like it. Now get washed and dressed, I’m still taking you out for brunch.”
(Y/N) quickly kissed his cheek and left his room, not wanting to delay.
After their brunch, (Y/N) spent the rest of the day getting ready for the party and running around fretting about the smallest things, only settling down after a threat from Ada. After several impatient shouts from John and Finn, (Y/N) was finally making her way downstairs to the rest of her family who made of a series of appreciative noises when they saw her, causing her to smile.
“You look wonderful darling.” Polly walked over to her and gave her a hug before leading her outside and towards the Garrison where the party was being held, the rest of the family following behind them.
“How’s your day been so far?” Polly asked her.
“Good! Brunch with Tommy was great as per usual.” (Y/N) grinned.
(Y/N) usually had brunch with Tommy and then dinner with the rest of her family on her birthday but because this year was slightly different, they were doing dinner the next day.
“I’m glad.” Polly patted her hands and they continued their journey with small nonsense chatter, Ada and Esme quickly joining in.
The party was already in full swing when they arrived, drinks were being passed around and the music was pounding and as soon as she stepped foot into the pub, (Y/N) was dragged away by her friends, the bunch of them squealing and giggling. Tommy and his brothers were sat on a table tucked away but placed somewhere where they can see pretty much the whole room but despite that, they couldn’t see who had slipped into the pub.
Tommy too deep into conversation with Jeremiah Jesus and one too many drinks deep meant that he didn’t notice that something was up until the music suddenly stopped and screams erupted, and as he looked up to see what was happening, his blood ran cold at what he saw.
His little sister trapped in the arms of the client that was pissed off at him, with his gun held to her temple. The man wasn’t by himself, he had brought along two other men. (Y/N) was frozen in shock, afraid that one small mistake would result in her getting hurt.
Tommy slowly stood up and noticed his brothers and other Peaky Blinders do the same thing, each of them pulling out their guns. They easily outnumbered the three men but that didn’t matter as Tommy’s top priority was (Y/N)’s safety
“Thomas Shelby! We’re tired of being taken advantage of by people like you. We’ll have it no more!” One of the men shouted.
“Okay, alright. I hear you. Let’s talk, okay? But before that, I’m going to need you to let all these people go okay, they’re innocent.” Tommy gestured to people plastered to the walls of the Garrison, (Y/N)’s friends crying.
The man nodded and everyone quickly ran out, the only people left in the pub being Tommy, Arthur, John, Finn, Polly, Ada and Michael.
“Now, let the woman in your arms go. She’s just a teenager.”
The leader was the man holding (Y/N) and hesitated before he stood his ground, “No! If I let her go then you’ll just kill me. I want my money back Shelby!”
Arthur grumbled unhappily and shifted, causing Tommy to hold out his arm in warning.
“If you let her go we won’t.” Tommy placed his gun on the table as a sign of truce, “Just let her go.”
The man slowly nodded and loosened his grip allowing (Y/N) to slip through a take a slow step forward, sobs spilling through her lips. “You’re alright, you’re fine. C’mon.” Tommy held out his arms for (Y/N) and took a step towards her.
“No! Stop letting him win, it’s not fair!” One of the man’s sidemen shouted in rage before a loud bang sounded.
The room was silent as everyone tried to understand what had happened and it was until stuttered gasps left (Y/N) did Tommy understand what had happened.
“No!” Tommy raced over to (Y/N) and caught her in his arms just as her legs buckled.
“Fuck! Fuck fuck fuck.” Tommy slowly lowered himself to ground with her in his arms. (Y/N)’s blood spilling through her dress and on to him.
“(Y/N), n-no p-please. O-oh god no”
(Y/N) let out a soft noise of distress as Tommy harshly pressed on the bullet wound.
“I know precious, I know it hurts but I have to do it.” Tommy didn’t even realise he was crying until (Y/N) gently flinched when a tear fell on her face.
“Polly! Polly help!” Tommy heard the clicking of his aunt’s heels before he felt her pushing his hands away. “Polly-- no I’ve got to help her”
“Tommy, let me check on her okay?” His aunt convinced him to move away so check on (Y/N)
Tommy had been so engrossed with (Y/N) that he had no idea what going elsewhere until a hand on his shoulder brought him out of his trance. It was Arthur and John was right behind him, both had blood splattered on them. Finn was crouched down by (Y/N)’s head softly brushing her hair back as he whispered into her ear, Tommy could see the tears slowly sliding down his face.
“Tommy” His aunt had a defeated look on her face and slowly shook her head.
“No! You’re wrong!” Tommy pushed past his aunt and shoved Finn aside so that he could fully bring (Y/N) into his arms, slowly rocking for side to side, loudly sobbing.
(Y/N) was in too much pain to speak and used the remnants of her energy to squeeze Tommy’s hand as tight as she could before she finally passed.
Tommy felt (Y/N) slightly slump in his arms and knew what had happened, letting a loud cry of pain. Tommy heard the cries and shouts and tears of his family around him but he couldn’t find it in himself to care, he was too wrapped up in the pain of his youngest sister that was more like a daughter to him an how her death was his fault.
His darling girl was dead.

Last First Birthdays
Summary: Tommy & you celebrating your last child’s first birthday. You’re sad that the kids are growing up. Tommy provides a listening ear.
Warnings: All Pure Fluff, slight mention of birth/pre-term labor.
A/N: I am not a doctor, but did do some research. Enjoy, I loved writing this. Soft Tommy & Tommy with kids is my forever weakness.
Word Count: 2.4K
Today was a special day. Your last born was having his first birthday today. Attius James Shelby.
“Look at the birthday boy.” You coo, your fingers patting your son’s stomach as he releases a small squeal, happy to see your face. He had just awoken from his pre-party nap.
You dressed him in his 1st birthday onesie, khaki shorts, and clipped his pacifier to his top, which would come in handy later. His little blue orbs stare into your eyes, as you stand him up on his changing table, before lifting him into your arms.
“Let’s go find your dad and siblings.” You peck his forehead, brushing your hand over his brown curly locks. You walk down the stairs, to see the hustle and bustle of the last minute platters of food and drinks being placed.
You walk into the living room to see Henry, your eldest son reading a book on the couch. Lydia, your second child with cards in her hands, slapping one down against the carpet. While Tom sits on the floor with Maeve, your third child, assisting her while laughing at something she says.
“Who’s ready for the birthday boy?” You speak gaining their attention.
“Me! I can’t wait for cake.” Lydia screams with excitement causing Maeve to scrunch her face up in annoyance at her sister.
“I am going to play with Jonas. He’s bringing his new card game over.” Henry responds, closing his book.
“Mummy we sing for Atty, right.” Maeve asks, calling her brother by his nickname, not able to pronounce his full name.
“Yes we will sing and have one slice of cake each. I will be watching.” You wag your finger playfully at Lydia. All the while your husband sits with a smirk on his face, his eyes fully enticed with yours. The doorbell rings, causing the kids to scramble to greet their family and poor Tom left with cleaning up the card game, but it wasn’t new to him with a house with four kids.
“Looks like you need some help Mr. Shelby. Bones of yours are getting old.” You tease, earning an eye roll, as he leans himself gently into you, as your free hand helps him off the floor.
“Keep it up while it lasts, you are right behind me.” He chuckles pulling you into his side. “You look lovely, dress suits you well. Always a beaut.”
“Why thank you, my love.” Your lips press against his cheek.
“Let’s go birthday lad, we have to spend time with our crazy family.” You laugh as he takes your son from your arms, fingers entwined with yours as you make your way to the backyard. - The party was a smash. It was an overall great day with your’s and Tommy’s family and a few close friends. You hoped Tom was able to get Lydia to bed because she had a sweet tooth almost as bad as you, knowing someone gave that girl a second piece of cake (John), which was more unnecessary sugar the girl needed in her system, hoping she wouldn’t have a stomach ache from all the treats today.
Atticus enjoyed being passed around, trying cake for the first time, and being more interested in the wrapping paper than the presents. You took enough photos to last a lifetime.
As you rock your son asleep in his rocker you mind couldn’t help but think back to what a year it had really been since he was brought into the world, a miracle really. You couldn’t take your eyes off the photos you would switch out periodically (as you took new ones) around his bedroom. Keeping the same ones you took of him when he was just born, when he arrived home, family photos throughout the year. The images floating in your head. The memories forever imprinted in your mind.
He was born eight weeks early in September. This pregnancy came as a surprise as you and Tommy weren’t expecting to have any more as your hands were full with three kids already. You both weren’t getting any younger.
When you told your husband the news, he took it in stride, telling you how excited he was, despite the chaos of his world around you. All your pregnancies so far were a breeze but this one was stressful. Tommy tried his best to be home, get extra help around the home with the children, and get your older two children to be more helpful when possible.
Your water broke 8 weeks early and you had to have an emergency c-section. Tom was by your side through it all panicking on the inside but putting a brave front on for you. He wheeled you to the NICU to see your small infant son with tubes hooked up to him. Learning how to connect with him through the two small holes of the incubator. That was the start of a journey, for the family.
It definitely put a strain on your marriage of having Tommy balance work, the kids, and taking time visiting the hospital and helping you recover. Both your families provided as much support as possible. The car ride home was nerve wracking having to remember all this information and doing this without the help of the nurses.
Atticus settled in pretty quick to the environment and his siblings who would come to say goodnight to their little brother. It would be hard to sleep during the night with either one of always getting up to check on him, even if he was just sleeping peacefully. He was a little behind his milestones which was to be expected but each step of the way was worth it. He was growing healthily, was able to say little phrases, and was getting closer to walking. He was the calmest out of all your children and easy going.
Your heart was happy to celebrate his first birthday. All your children’s birthdays made you emotional, as you knew they weren’t going to stay young - little - forever. As much as you both wanted them to. This one was the last first birthday you were going to celebrate, as you weren’t planning on having anymore children. Atticus like the rest of your kids were going to grow on their way to independence and need you less and less. You knew you had to let them find their way in this beautiful but cruel world.
“Knew I'd find you in here.” His voice brings comfort to your heart as he whispers to you in the dim lighting across the room, opening the door, just leaving it cracked a bit.
“The rest of the crew are finally to bed and remind me to slap John on the back of his head the next time I spot him for giving Lydia a second piece of cake.” His head shakes with a roll of the eyes as he paces across the floor, to take half a seat on the arm of the rocking chair. You can’t help the smile that plays on your lips.
“Those two are as thick as thieves, poor lad can never say no to her. Spoils her rotten, like the rest of your siblings do to all our kids.” You reply knowing all the Shelby siblings loved all your children equally, each one having similarities to them all, but knew which children brought a weakness or were closer to their uncles/aunt.
It’s quiet for a moment, just the two of you, staring at your sleeping son in your arms. “You know he’s not going anywhere, none of them are. They’re always going to need you, need us. Hell, even I'll need you when I'm old and grey.” His lips peck the top of your head, fingers squeezing your shoulder with gentle reassurance.
He knew you like the back of his hand. His words rang true in your mind and heart, knowing this wasn’t the first time he found you in this spot, with the same thoughts, that come along with parenthood.
You wanted old and grey with Tom, you wanted to believe in it, even though you both knew it wasn’t promised not in his world especially. You were blessed with him thus far, this man aged like fine wine the older he got. You could tell he was getting older in trying to keep up with the energy of the kids, the glasses you adored, and the crow’s feet that was starting to make an appearance.
“I know, just working myself up over the small things. I know we don’t have to worry but I do. Just want to make sure everything will go right. Henry is going to be a teen soon, that boy is too smart for his own good. Lydia is just as stubborn as you are and free-spirited but reminds me of you. Maeve is sweet and our little helper, she’s only just started preschool. Both of them wrapped around your finger in different ways.
I accepted it then in my mind after Maeve but then Atticus came along. I think about the what if’s of that day, the weeks passed, but then I'm reminded of today. How it all feels right and complete. It all goes by so fast, I just want to hold on to this moment, ya know.”
He listens to your continuous thought, walking through it as you speak your mind. You were a deep thinker and took everything to heart because you cared so much. It was the little things that added up. That made life sweeter than the grand things. That was one of the things he loved the most about you, the thing that attracted him from the very beginning of your relationship. He doesn’t miss the quiet tears that release gently out your eyes, the smallness of your wet voice.
He knows what you mean because he has the same thoughts, even though he doesn’t always share them. He has enough nerves for his lifetime and lines in his forehead to prove it.
Henry the eldest reminded him of the earlier years of your relationship. Young, in love, just starting out. The excitement of your first born. He knew after Henry was born, he would do everything in his power to stay alive. He was smart, a leader, and enjoyed spending time with his cousins. He was a younger version of himself, but better. He was glad for it.
Lydia came a few years later and she took his heart when his blue eyes met her brown ones. She was a handful from the start (she was definitely his daughter). She reminded him of Ada in her sass and the mouth on her but also John as she was the child that brought the most laughter and entertainment to the family as she was extroverted. They would enjoy being silly together and tease you to no end.
Maeve was like you in all ways, sweet, loving, and ready to help the best way a 4 year old can. She was a shy girl but was definitely a daddy’s girl. Always searching for him when he was away or would try to sweet talk her way to stay up to see him before bed or read her an extra story. Would make herself comfortable in his home office to play with her toys or find a way to sit on his lap as he did paperwork. She would always ask him the sweetest of things or most serious things, trusting whatever answer left his mouth. He had the hardest time telling her no.
Atticus came as a surprise but in the best of ways. His birth changed something within him. Thomas Shelby wasn’t a religious man by any means, but when he watched his son get wheeled away by the nurses and was watching him through the big glass window the first few hours of his life, he prayed hard for the first time, in a long time, since he was 18. He couldn’t bear the thought of losing a child, let alone losing you.
He remembers your tears as he wheeled you to meet your son for the first time. Him reassuring you and himself, that it was all going to be okay. It was this child that made him slow down the most and rethink his priorities, putting them in check once again. These past two years were hard business and family wise. Managing the logistics of expanding and meetings, risky deals/death threats, raising 4 kids, with two under the age of 5 and in need of constant attention.
Handling the nerves of it all, your/his moods, and the tiffs you both would get in due to sleep deprivation, late nights working, stubbornness on both ends, or just not having a minute alone together or for intimacy. Moments like these, in the quiet night of his home with you and the children at peace made it worth every minute of the day. Made him want to be around even longer, even though it wasn’t necessarily promised.
“I do too love, I know.” His fingers brush the sleeping infant’s cheeks, watching as he snuggles subconsciously closer in your arms. He knew he didn’t have to say much because in that small phrase communicated all you needed to know, to hear. The both you could read one another like a book where it speaks for itself.
“Come let’s get to bed.” He hums, blue eyes shimmering with affection, as his lips turn upward in one of your favorite smiles, reserved just for you. His soft lips press against yours lightly into just a small peck. The pads of his soft fingers, brushing against your wet cheeks to collect this remainder of the tears. He stands to his feet, holding the chair still as you get up to place your son into his crib.
“Goodnight, sweet Atticus. We love you.” You whisper, feeling the warmth of Tommy wrap around your frame, chin resting on your shoulder, fingers tangling together, bands touching as you both stare down at your sleeping son.
You knew that everything was going to be okay. Even though you weren’t going to be celebrating anymore first birthdays in your household, you knew every birthday after would still be as special as the last one. You always made sure of it as you loved celebrating birthdays as much as holidays. You had all you needed within yourself, the man you loved dearly, and the four sleeping children you called your own.

In Another World - T. Shelby Imagine Ch. 12
Paring: (Eventual) Thomas Shelby x Aliena Welsh (OC)
Fandom: Peaky Blinders
Word Count: 10,468
WARNINGS: Angst, Alcohol Consumption (borders abuse), Cursing, FIGHT SCENE (Detailed), Existential Crisis, Mentions of Blood & Bones Breaking
Summary: Aliena’s 18th birthday has arrived, but her mental health isn’t doing so well. She’s feeling more distant from the Shelby’s and in her role in their universe. Aliena has been partying a lot, drinking a lot of alcohol. How is that affecting her?
MASTERLIST CHAPTER 11 CHAPTER 13
A/N: This chapter has a fight scene. It’s mildly detailed, but be warned. Thomas does interact with Aliena in this chapter, however; it’s not a huge part of this chapter. Along with the previous chapter, this chapter centers on Aliena. Also, she’s still very depressed. BLACK LINE BREAK INDICATED START AND END OF FIGHT SCENE!!
Me nose was runny and tears slipped out of me eyes. Cassie was holding back me hair and rubbing me back as I vomited me guts out. I sniffed as I fell to me side. I got a hold of the handle and flushed the toilet.
“Tank you.” I said.
Cassie nodded with her squinted eyes and her lips pursed. “I got you, honey. I got you, Ali.” She was rubbing me arm now and didn’t let go of me hair.
Slowly and not steadily, I stood up. Cassie followed me and didn’t let go of me hair. I turned on the faucet and rinsed me mouth of the taste. As I bent down to spit out the water, I felt a familiar tug on me hair. I raised me hand and tried to whack her grip away. She finally fuckin’ let go.
I gasped for air, looked to me side, and reached for me toothbrush.
Cassie cackled while walking over to the toilet. She put the lid down ‘n sat on it. “Not regretting leaving that here now, are you?”
I rolled me eyes as I brushed me teeth. “Nevah did, ya divvy.” I spat out the excess before going in and brushing me tongue as well.
Anyway after all that, Cassie and I walked out. There was people asleep across the floor, on couches, on chair, ‘n even tables. Me hand flew to me mouth and I felt nauseous again.
“Cassie, we’re not fucking home!” I turned ‘round and clutched her forearm with a fury.
Cassie had the same flabbergasted look on her face.
“We fuckin’ fell asleep in the loo!”
Cassie started gagging and I tsked as I stomped me foot.
“You brushed your teeth with somebody’s else’s toothbrush!” Cassie whispered-shouted.
I whimpered while stomping me feet. “I know I did.” I marched over to Angie and smacked her shoulder. “Angie, wake up! Wake up, we have to go!” I began shaking her.
She protested in her sleep, but eventually she couldn’t take it anymore and shot up.
“All right!” She yelled. “All right, I’m awake.”
“Thank you.” I said with some snap in me tone. I looked over to Tina and luckily, Cassie saved me the trouble of waking her arse up.
“Thank ya Jesus! Let’s fuckin’ go!” I shouted. Some people fucking whined in their sleep while others glared at me. I fucking glared back. The four of us stumbled our way ‘til the front of the house.
“Wait!” Cassie shouted.
I looked back at her and contorted me face in confusion.
She trailed off to the phone while saying, “I have to call Simmons .”
Collectively, we all groaned.
I cradled me head and then let it drop limply. I must have stood there for .5 seconds before I huffed. “I’m waiting outside. Join me if you want!” So, I walked outside and sat down on the steps.
It was fucking freezing! I really hafta to start bringing coats.
“Fuck, Ali! Aren’t you fucking freezing?” Angie asked me as she sat beside me.
I scoffed while rubbing me arms up and down furiously. “Yes, of course, I am.”
Angie opened up her fur coat and ushered me to get in. I did so without hesitation. She shivered as I stole her warmth. Then, we started giggling.
“Fucking London winters!” I shouted. This caused Angie to chuckle.
I could hear the doors open and close at the same time as a car engine did. I looked back to see Cassie and Tina walking out, heels in hand.
“He’s here.” Cassie announced while walking past us.
Angie and I got up and followed suit. I don’t remember the drive because I fell back to sleep. Once we got to her place, we all decided to take a shower. I was made to go last since I had just flopped on the bed and closed me eyes.
I wasn’t asleep, but I didn’t want to be awake either. Tina came and shook me awake when it was me turn. I rolled up, grabbed some towels, and walked into the bathroom.
I turned on the water ‘n made sure it was scalding hot before I stepped in. I sighed in pleasure as I was enveloped in its heat. I ran me hands over me hair and down me neck.
Tommy’s been busy as was the whole family. Finn’s abar to turn twelve, but he’s growing fast. His baby fat is going away and he’s stretching out.
God, was I teased when I came back bladdered the first night I went out! They all had a laugh. Arthur’s booming laugh made me wince which made more snickers go ‘round. Tommy even teased me abar calling him pretty.
“Me eyes still pretty, Aliena?” He asked me.
I tried smacking him, but he swerved and ran off. As much as me head was pounding, we- I was still happy.
I sighed as I lathered me body with soap.
I still feel lost. I’m stuck cleaning and collecting payments from families. I only did that gig every two week, though. So, I took up another job and started helping Polly with the finances. I just double checked her math and did some of me own. The latter was only if we were swamped, though.
I wasn’t getting paid for that either. Two pound was enough, Polly warned me. I didn’t fight it. I saved up a lot of money. I just wasn’t out enough to spend it on much, but now that I am— it’s slowly decreasing.
I huffed as I washed out the shampoo from me hair.
Finn is ‘aving trouble reading, finally. That coupled along with his growing desire to be apart of the family business, he’s getting even more discouraged abar school. Been hanging ‘round with Isaiah Jesus, who was five or six years older than him. Isaiah is a nice enough boy. Honestly, I don’t care what they do. They’re not me own children, after all.
I looked down at the water spiraling into the drain.
That’s a blag. I care deeply with what happens to that kid. Poor thing.
I sighed while turning off the shower. I wrang me hair multiple times to get out as much excess water as I could before bunching it up in a towel.
I didn’t like feeling like a freeloader in that house. It was just wrong. But I couldn’t deny that I loved the days like this where I knew I had no responsibilities because I already took care of them.
I would just sleep in bed. Or, like last night— party ‘til I blacked out. I also started writing again. Some original fantasy story. It was more for the 2000s, so I didn’t dare let anyone read it. After all, they wouldn’t understand some of the jargon I used nor the types of technologies.
Once I was done drying off me body, I began to lather me legs in lotion.
I was partying a lot! Like a lot. I can’t tell you how many times between December 16th and now, that Tommy had carried me off to bed.
I kept telling him that he didn’t have to do that, but he insisted that he was doing it so I wouldn’t get sick. I’ve never not slept with blankets before, so I couldn’t disagree. I mean I did it when I was a child, I’m sure. But, I don’t remember if I got sick over it. I was sick a lot as a child.
I tucked in me towel and walked out. “I’m still alive.” I announced while walking over to me backpack.
“Good. I was afraid you died in there.” Cassie chuckled at her own joke, which made me smile.
I just yanked whatever I could out of it since it was holding everything I needed. New undergarments and clothes. Once I put on me panties, I dropped me towel so I could put on me bra.
I finally looked up and watched as they talked amongst themselves. I tugged me hair towel off and patted me hair dry.
“Hey, Ali. Your birthday is coming up. How do you feel about a party?”
With me back bent as I was drying me hair, I asked. “Where at?”
They collectively began to hum as I began me fight with jeans. I always had to jump once they got to me thighs.
“Well, I wanted to throw you a party at my house.” Angie said as her hands joined in on the conversation.
I froze, instantly. I literally stopped putting on me shirt. “You mean at your mansion?”
She nodded with a sheepish smile on her face.
I let me shirt stay stuck above me bust as I rushed to Angie. I hugged her as she giggled.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” I chanted.
“Um, you’re welcome. I guess. I mean, I’m not doing this for a thank you. I want to throw a big party, that’s all. You’re one of my best friends.”
I squeezed her tighter before letting her go. “Still, thank you. ‘Cause you don’t have to throw me a party at all.”
I gave her a big-toothy smile before I launched to kiss her cheek.
I went home the next day, fully sober. Don’t worry, yesterday was a rest day for me liver. Didn’t exactly want to die of a failed liver so soon. What am I talking abar? It’ll catch up to me later in life like with the boys.
Knowing me own luck, its gonna catch up with me sooner. Just watch.
I walked through the door and locked it behind me. It was seven, so I knew that Polly had to be up.
“Polly, I’m home!”
“In the kitchen, love!”
I walked in the room and there she was sitting with Ada and Karl. I cooed at the sight of him. I made grabby hands which made Ada chuckle. She passed him into me arms and I sighed.
“Hello, little one. How are you? Oh, you’re getting heavier. Mummy’s been feeding you right!”
I began to pepper his face in kisses which made him smile.
“So, Ali. Polly’s been telling me that you’ve been to the big city with your friends. How are you liking it?”
I slowly took a seat before answering her. “Um, it’s not bad. I mean, during the day it’s beautiful. Perfect for people visiting, but at night-!” I scoffed while laughing. “It’s like everybody’s morals are gone with the light.”
Polly chortled. “So, like here except you get the same during the day too.”
I rolled me eyes before blowing a raspberry. Karl giggled so I did it again. I looked at Ada and asked, “So, you and Freddie have any luck finding a flat?”
She looked down, picking at her nails. So, that’s a no.
Ada scoffed. “It’s just so much harder than we thought. Things are really heating up within the group and Freddie’s friends can’t take us in because money is tight right now.”
I furrowed me eyebrows. “It is?”
It seems that I stepped on a landmine ‘cause there was a sparkle in Ada’s eyes. And so, she went on a rant abar communism. I only half paid attention, to be polite. Though Polly and I shared multiple judgemental glances at each other.
Karl, eventually, started to get fussy and I gave him back to Ada. Said he was probably hungry.
Polly cleared her throat when Ada stopped talking. “So, Ali, your birthday is coming up. What do you want to do?”
I hummed in thought. “Well, um, one of me friends offered to throw me a party at her place. So, I’m not sure. Plus, everyone is so busy. I don’t want to impose on anything.”
“Well, then. Guess a little celebration at the Garrison the day before wouldn’t be so bad, right?”
I whipped ‘round to see Tommy leaning against the entrance of the kitchen, taking a drag from his ciggie.
I stopped getting after him abar them a while back. Didn’t see the point anymore. Especially now since I smoke too from time to time.
“No, it wouldn’t.”
He nodded. “We can see you drink in action. Wonder how many glasses of whiskey ‘till you feel a buzz?”
I felt me cheeks heat up as Polly and Ada snickered. I went to strike him ‘n he just lifted his arm.
I sighed and leaned on me head with the support of me hand.
“Where am I needed today?” I asked, slightly already exhausted.
Polly hummed as she quickly swallowed her sip of tea. “I’ll be needing your help in the shop. Come on.”
I bit me lip, in order to stop the sigh that wanted to escape me mouth. I looked over at Tommy one last time, who was still looking at me.
I spent the whole day running ‘round for Polly. Counting up money, retrieving money from the boys, and putting it away in the safe. I didn’t know the combination. I was just tossing it in.
When she didn’t need me help, I was to go and make dinner. I did, in fact, make lunch as well.
As I was doing that I went and called Cassie.
“Hello!” Cassie answered with a sing-song tone.
“Hello, Cassie.”
“Oh! Ali, what’s going on?”
I shook me head, even though, she couldn’t see it. “Is nothing. So, the Shelby’s are throwing me a little gatherin’ at the Garrison. You know the bar that Arthur owns now. And I was wondering if you and the girls can make it?”
I heard Cassie hum. “Well, I don’t see why we couldn’t. I know I’ll be there, but let me ask them and I’ll call you back.”
“Okay.”
We hung up and I refocused on finishing dinner. She called me back a little later saying that they agreed to come. Now, all that was left was for the day to come.
Today we were celebratin’ me 18th birthday. I’ve been with the Shelby’s for a year and 11 months. On me first 18th birthday, I was given a car. I wonder what I’m getting this year. Prior to the whole Kimber operation, I had been drawing a lot— but since, I stopped. I still have loads of paint and a single canvas left.
I just hoped that they don’t give me the same thing.
I wasn’t woken up the same way like last year either. It was the sun that woke me. I opened me eyes and laid in bed. I looked at the door in silence then turned away.
I could feel it in the air. Today was not going to be a good day.
I huffed while shutting me eyes close tightly. I slowly got up and turned ‘round so me feet where almost touchin’ the floor. I took a deep breath and let me feet touch the ground.
I figured since we weren’t gonna be at the bar ‘til late at night. I was expected to still do me regular duties. I mean, after all, tomorrow was me birthday. I threw on a simple dress and boots then headed downstairs.
I started working on breakfast. For who? I don’t know. Maybe just for me. I could hear the bustling of the shop. Men shouting.
This empty room. This empty, vacant room with only me filling it.
I closed me eyes and clenched me fists. The stinging pain of me nails diggin’ into me palm distracted me from crying. I shook me head and quickly plated me omelet. The chair scraped against the floor as I pulled it out and then I sat down.
I stared at it and stared.
I’m not that hungry.
“Ali, what’re doing?”
Me head snapped up and I locked eyes with Tommy. I blinked furiously before shaking me head a little, ‘n it really was just a little.
I gulped before taking me fork, cutting a piece, and placed it in me mouth. “I was thinking.” I said with a little scoff, a goofy smile on me face. “Didn’t realize I was thinking that hard.”
He tipped his cap at me with furrowed eyebrows and squinted eyes before he walked off.
I watched him and then dropped me fork. It didn’t taste of anything.
To avoid causing up a stir, I scarfed down the rest of that omelet and then went abar me way.
I went outside and pulled down the laundry. I tried keeping me head clear of everything and anything. But it was impossible. I kept making up plots in me head. I was just so bored without anyone to talk to.
‘I miss the kids.’ I caught meself thinking. I sighed while I clutched the basket closer to me body. I looked away before looking back ‘n walked back into the house. I had to start folding.
Once I folded the clothes, I placed them in the room of their respective owners and then went back downstairs to clean up the place. I was in the middle of sweeping when lunch came ‘round.
I did the usual and brought the boys and Polly their meals. Esme was at home today. However, there was one odd man out, Tommy. He was probably overseeing the designs of his office. They were going to start building soon. He said it would take anywhere from four to seven months.
So with me basket like little red riding hood, I had to go on an adventure to take Tommy his lunch. When I got there, he dismissively thanked me. He literally didn’t even pick up his head, just took the bloody sandwich.
I didn’t even roll me eyes as usual. Didn’t see the point. I just went on me way.
There was this pit in me stomach. It was making itself known more and more by the second.
I gasped in pain and leaned on a wall for support. I started smoothing me stomach by rubbing it harshly. But then I could feel the stares, so I stood up and began on me way again.
By the time I got back, it was already late afternoon. I had to hurry up with the sweeping, dusting, and then beginning to polish the silver. I was not going to be able to finish that today!
I bought meself a type of curling iron and was dying to try it out. It was Tina who suggested it to me. Well, it was curling tongs but I was willing to burn meself to curl me hair.
I picked out a pale-blue, dyed Burberry lace dress for tonight. I’ve been dying to wear it! I had a pale blue undergarment set to match. I put on said undergarments and dress, then worked on me hair.
I got burned a couple of times, but it was worth it. The waves I’d get from having a bun just weren’t the same. I decided against makeup today. I just put on some chapstick and waited for night to roll ‘round.
I kept meself busy by writing. I was on a sex scene for me story. It just kept me mind busy and away from negative thoughts. I didn’t stop writing ‘til there was a knock at me door.
“Ali, dear, are you ready?”
I slammed me journal shut and shoved it in its drawer. “Yeah!” I called out. “I’ll be right out!”
“Okay.”
I got up from me seat and rushed out. I guess from the way I opened me door, Polly flinched. I gave her a sheepish smile.
“Shall we head out?” I asked.
She nodded while giving me a smile back. “Let’s go, love. I suspect the boys are already there. Starting without us.”
I scoffed. “Oh, Pol. I wouldn’t doubt it.” We shared another smile before we headed down the stairs arm in arm.
“Aliena, have you met a boy in London?” Polly asked.
I shook me head. “Nah.” I took me coat off the hook, put it on, and managed to tug out me hair.
“Why not? I’m sure there’s hundreds of men out there that want to talk to ya!” She asked as we walked out the door, locking it behind us.
I tucked a piece of hair away from me face. “I mean, yeah. I have talked to men at the clubs.”
“But none of them worked out.”
I shook me head. “They all seemed to want one thing, you know. The ones that did seem sweet, fuckin’ turned ballistic on me at some point in the night. Then the real gentlemen just-!” I sighed. “There was just something missing.”
Polly sighed while patting me forearm that she was holding. “Yep, that’s men for you. Dogs that think with their cocks.” She sighed. “Well, there’s no rush. Take your time. Find someone you’ll want to spend the rest of your life with. But not too long, I want to be around to see that little one.”
A genuine smile and giggled let me lips. “I promise, Polly.”
She pinched me cheek as we walked.
“Is Ada and Freddie coming?” I asked.
She shrugged. “No idea. Last time we talked Ada said she wanted to come. But, with the new baby and the fact they’re practically still newlyweds because of all that’s happened— they probably would rather stay in.”
I half rolled me eyes. “You mean Freddie suggested that Ada stayed home.”
“Most likely.”
We both grumbled at that.
“Is that how married life is, Pol?”
She looked at me then looked away. “It’s not everything. It’s a part of it. Compromise. Ada can’t very well expect to go out whenever she wants. She doesn’t have a babysitter to take care of Karl, and you can’t bloody well expect the father to help.” She scoffed again.
Sounded like she was reminiscing.
I hummed and said. “True.”
We arrived at the Garrison, soon enough, and I opened the doors for her. It was just polite. Right?
We immediately went into the snug where the whole family was excluding John’s kids and Ada. So, really. It was just Arthur, Tommy, John, Finn, and Esme. Yes, Esme was here.
While it did irk me that she was here instead of taking care of the kids, it was not me decision to make. They had their own parenting style. And, Esme was not a bad person.
They cheered as we walked.
“Oi!”
“There’s the birthday girl!”
“Happy Birthday, Ali!”
I smiled while taking of me coat. Arthur came ‘round and helped me. I quickly thanked him and then found a spot to sit in.
Tommy stood up from his seat and reached over to me. “No, come on.” He said while pulling me up. “Up you get. Finn, go and get the cake.”
Finn was actually smiling rather than grumbling abar being made to get the cake. I covered me mouth with me hand in embarrassment. But went along with it, nonetheless.
Finn came back in balancing the cake in one hand as he had to close the door behind him. Polly took it from his hands and set it down on the table. Arthur and John were working on lighting all the candles.
The air was somewhat awkward yet filled with excitement at the same time. It was weird.
As Arthur lit the last candle, they started singing. It was happenin’ all over again. I was covering me mouth with me hands and doubling over.
“Happy Birthday, dear Aliena. Happy Birthday to you!”
“Blow out the/your candles.”
I leaned down and thought abar it. ‘I wish I find happiness here soon.’ Then, I blew them out. They cheered and Polly was the first to hug me.
She whispered me a happy birthday in me ear before pecking me cheek and moving out of the way. Finn was next to wish me a happy birthday. I squeezed him tight while swaying us side to side. John stole me from Finn’s grasp, as always.
“Happy birthday, Ali. Is that a wrinkle I see?”
I gasped horrified and smacked his arm just as fast. He fucking cackled as he flinched.
“Don’t listen to ‘em, Aliena. Happy birthday, Songbird!” Arthur roared as he brought me in for a hug. He shook us with made me make the sounds to match. I wasn’t expecting him to shake me.
Esme squeezed her way over to me and she wished me as well. We exchanged a quick peck on the cheek before I was left with the last one.
“Well, aren’t you a sight for sore eyes.” I teased while leaning back, me hands on me hips.
Tommy rolled his eyes, a small smile on his face. “Happy Birthday, Ali.” He hugged me and as I went to part from him, he kept me there. I felt him lean into me ear and I bit me lip harshly so I didn’t flinch. “For your present, I-!” He sighed into me ear, and I couldn’t help but flinch. “I, for lack of better words, added a headstone for your father. Happy Birthday, Aliena and I’m sorry.”
This imaginary romantic atmosphere was instantly shattered by the mention of me father. Great job, Thomas!
I smiled and thanked him as we parted. I made me way back to me seat.
“Right!” Arthur shouted. “I say we get to opening these bloody presents. Get it out the way and drink Aliena till she drops!” He raised his mug to me while taking a drink of his bevvy.
I squinted at him while titling me head. “Fine, let’s get them out of the way!” I slid a box over from the middle of the table and began ripping it open. I shimmed the lid off of the box to reveal shoes.
“You’re gonna need a good pair of dancing shoes, if ya expect to be dancing ‘round clubs all the time, Ali.” John said with a cigar between his lips.
I plastered on a smile and thanked him. I set in under the table and dealt with the rest of them. Arthur bought me more canvases. Something abar that made me laugh. I should expect canvases for all of me birthdays.
Once I sobered up, I opened up the last big box on the table. It was a coat from Polly. I faked a squeal, hugged her, and thanked her incessantly. It’s not that I didn’t like the coat. It’s just I never asked for one, either.
Then, there was this little box. I tugged on the ribbon and shimmed the lid off of it to reveal a rather expensive looking necklace. The snug quieted down and we collectively tried to find the culprit. Our eyes locked on the boy who was smiling the brightest.
Without a care in the world, Finn wished me a happy birthday. Cue Polly smacking him upside the head.
“Finn, where’d you pinch that from?” Tommy asked while rubbing his bottom lip.
Finn, who was shielding himself from the last of Polly’s blows, answered. “Some jewelry store in London. Think it was called Madison. It’s not a big deal.”
All us shouted that it was indeed a big deal. I covered the box and pinched the bridge of me nose.
Polly sighed. “No point in worrying now. I’ll be reading the papers in case people are looking for it. For now, give it to me. I’ll hide it away. It’s no good to be wearing that around here or right now.” She held out her hand for me.
I instantly gave it to her. I looked over at Finn who was looking rather ashamed. “You better beaut, you.” I shoved his face away, playfully.
A small smile graced his face.
After that debacle, I ate a piece of me own cake while drinking gin. It’s been the first time in a long while that I’ve managed to get the chance to talk to everybody like this.
Made me really think abar how much I matter and how much I don’t. How much doing over Kimber changed this family. They were all busier. I wasn’t. They wouldn’t have done this if it hadn’t been me birthday. Well, they wouldn’t have invited me and Polly. It’s a fucking boys club in this family. Well, they did invite me in the past— but that’s all it is now, the past.
I downed a glass of whiskey and felt it burn me throat. I was getting used to it. I mean I started to drink at least twice a week. I could only limit me vices so much. It’s torture enough as is that I’m holding down the urge to smoke a ciggie right now. But, I am exposed to all the second hand in the air.
“So, Ali. How are you feeling?” Arthur asked me as he was leaning close to Tommy. As if they had a secret bet or something. I knew what he meant by the question.
I shrugged me shoulders as I smiled. “I feel fine. Warm and fine.”
He scoffed and nodded before turning his head toward Tommy’s ear.
I rolled me eyes and went back to me conversation with Polly. We were talking abar how we were gonna get a grip on Finn. It’s sad that it took that child to do an actual robbery before anyone decided to listen to me. But, at least it’s happenin’ now.
After that I went on a conversation with John, who also asked abar me love life. It was getting so annoying to repeat the same damn things! Then, Esme had to add her two cents in and I couldn’t “snap” back in fear of getting on the wrong foot.
“I think you should experience life as is. Settling down is something you do later.”
I widened me eyes and put on a polite smile, but still had to bite me lip. Didn’t she have an arranged marriage ‘cause she was too wild. I nodded and then moved back to where me seat originally was.
One minute turned into five which turned into ten.
Were these bitches really not going to show up?
I looked ‘round to see everyone engaged in some kind of conversation. The boys were playing a card game while Polly and Esme talked. I was the odd man out. Just nursing me fucking bevvy.
I don’t want to admit it, but this set up right here was hurting me feelings. Never liked feeling excluded.
I took another glance at them again as I trailed me finger ‘round the rim of the glass.
I didn’t mean to do it, but I began thinking abar how it would be if I wasn’t here. Would they still have met up today? Under the circumstance of a nice day to relax after work. Did me presence actually affect anything? Why was I here? What was me purpose here? Am I supposed to help someone in the Shelby family?
Am I supposed to prevent the second war from happening? Was this a blessing or a curse? Was this a curse?
“Ailena! Aliena, hun, we’re here!” Cassie shouted from outside the snug.
I shot up from me chair, whipped back the door, and threw me arms ‘round her. We both laughed and swayed a little.
“You came. You fuckin’ slags. I thought youse weren’t gonna show.”
Cassie laughed while petting me hair. “We thought you were home then we had to ask around where this bar was. We’re not from here idiot.” She knocked on me head as if she were knocking on a door. “We weren’t going to find this place if no one showed us it before.”
I pursed me lips. As I dropped me hip to the left while knocking me own head. “Oops, my bad.” I took Cassie’s hand in mine and ushered her into the snug. Angie and Tina followed suit. “Shelbys, meet my friends. This is Cassie Johnson, Lady Angelica Sallow, and The Honorable Christiana King. Friends meet the Shelbys. That is Arthur, Thomas, John, Finn, Esme, and Polly Gray.”
Cassie uttered a “hi,” while waving with a smile. Tina just waved and smiled.
Angie pushed her way through and greeted Polly. “Good evening, it’s so nice to meet you all, finally. Aliena has said all good things.”
Polly shook her hand, but I knew that face. She was studying her. I cleared me throat and clapped me hands.
“Well, I wouldn’t want us to be all cramped up in the snug. So, we’ll be out there! Okay? Okay.” I grasped Angie’s hand and dragged her out of the snug.
“It really was nice meeting you all!” She shouted before I slammed the door shut. “What the ‘ell, Ali? She didn’t even get to say anything.”
I rolled me eyes. “Believe me, that was probably a good thing.” ‘She was sizing you up,’ was left unsaid. I flicked her forehead before leading them to the bar top.
I waved Harry over who looked like he was stammering for words. He leaned down to the men sitting and said something to them that made them leave. I smiled and took a seat there.
“Anything I can get for you ladies? On the house. I know it’s our special Aliena’s birthday.” Harry said as he leaned against the top.
I smiled and said. “Can we get four gin and tonics, Harry? Thanks.”
“Coming right up.”
I turned ‘round so me back was against the top. “Thank God, youse came when ya did. I was dying of boredom in there.”
Cassie scoffed. “Maybe you should just-!”
I held up me finger, effectively shutting her up. “I literally just said that I was bored. I didn’t say I was being abused.”
Cassie tsked while rolling her eyes which made me smirk. Tina cleared her throat before she spoke.
“So, that was the Tommy, you’re always talking about?”
Me eyes widened to the size of saucers as I shushed her while me head did a full 180. “Don’t go announcing it to the whole fucking bar, Tina!” I looked ‘round a bit more before I leaned over Cassie and whispered. “But yes, that’s him.”
“He looks really intense. Is that your type?” Tina asked, unfazed.
I looked away before answering her. “Yes and no. He’s my type, obviously, since I have a crush on ‘em. But, the only thing he and the other men that I’ve been enamored with is high cheekbones.”
She oh-ed and nodded.
“Here you ladies are!” Harry said as the glasses clinked against the bar top.
All four of us grabbed our drinks.
“Toast!” Angie shouted. We held our drinks in the air. “Today, we celebrate our little Aliena turning 18 a day early. Let’s try not to not drink too much ‘cause we are gonna party like it’s the end of the world tomorrow! To Aliena.”
“To Aliena! To me!”
Then, we drank as much as we could before having some sort of reaction. After that we paired off, I was talking to Angie.
“So, what happened to that guy you left with some nights ago?” I asked Angie as I took a sip of me bevvy.
She sighed as she used the straw to stir her drink. “It was a complete waste of time. In all honesty, I’m beginning to lose hope. I might as well just give up and let my father match me off.”
I shook me head furiously. “No! No, Ange. Don’t give up. What are you? 19, 20, you still have time to look. If you were 30, I’d be saying otherwise— but you’re not. You’ll find a guy when the time is right.”
Okay, I’m not bashing 30-year-old single people. Angie is expected to marry off at an early age in order to comply with the societal norms of the 1920s. Besides, she and her father have this arrangement that if she doesn’t have anyone she wants to marry for love by that age— then he has the right to marry her off.
She groaned while supporting her head with her hand, her elbow on the bar top. I rubbed her back up and down.
“You’ll find your Mister Right, Ange. I just know it. Hey, maybe, you have already met him.” I attempted to lighten her mood. “Either way. I think it’s too early to call it quits. Maybe we stop trying to find the love of our lives in clubs, eh? Try a cafe or a country club, instead?”
Angie turned her gaze to me and we shared a giggle.
“Eh?” I tried again.
“Yeah.” She whispered. “Yeah. You’re right.”
I smirked as I put me hand down and used it to bring me drink to me lips. “I know I am.”
I had two more gin and tonics before I felt that I was out of it. I was shoutin’, for sure. I was borderline slurring yet me sentences were still understandable. I had, technically, pre-gamed ‘cause the boys were trying to drink me under the table.
I had stumbled out of the loo when I was attacked by me friends.
“Aliena! Ali!” They shouted.
I shook me head as I gripped their arms as they did mine. “What?” I shouted, confused.
Tina shoved Cassie forward who was cradling her cheek, but her lip was bleeding too. Me eyes widened and I immediately started inspecting it.
“What the fuck happened?”
Cassie looked away before looking back into me eyes. “I was talking to some guy. He came up to me at the bar. Then, this girl came up to me and just slapped me. She said that I should go to hell for being a homewrecker. That she bets that I’m nothing but a prostitute.” Cassie choked on a sob while rubbing her eyes. She smeared her eyeshadow ‘n mascara, making her look like a raccoon. Just like how I first met her. “Seems like they’re together or something. But I didn’t know. He came up to me. I swear. He came up to me. I would never flirt with a taken man, Ali.” She hiccup and whimpered.
I looked back to see Angie arguing with the girl. I could feel me blood boiling. I was filled with rage. That bitch made me Cassie cry.
“Ali, she was wearing rings.” Tina pointed out, her voice strained. She motioned toward Cassie’s busted lip.
I titled her head down to get a good look at it. Then, I began to shake me head softly before I muttered, “I’ll take care of it.” She should’ve known who she was hitting before she’d done it. Should’ve hit her unfaithful man instead of slapping me best friend.
I grabbed a drink that was idle at the bar top. Angie and the girl’s arguing got louder. I saw as the woman began to raise her arm, her fist clenched.
“Oi!” I yelled. The girl twirled ‘round and I threw the drink in her face before punching her straight on the nose. She gasped in pain as she went to cradle her nose. I gave her a moment to recuperate.
Let’s have a fair fight now.
She looked up at me, her nose bloody. “You crazy fucking bitch.”
“A fucking bitch who’s friend you messed with, dumb cunt.”
She growled before she launched herself at me, rather pathetically. I grabbed the hand that tried to slap me and gave her one instead. I managed to get both of her arms in me hold, I titled me head back, and head butted her.
Fuck did that bring tears to me eyes.
She fell to her knees as I let go of her arms. Instead of cradling her head, she wrapped her arms ‘round me legs and forced me down.
I groaned on impact, but quickly shot up and punched her. She yelped and went to clutch her face.
The fact that she managed to make me fall pissed me off even more.
I grabbed a wooden chair that nearby, raised it in the air, and started beating her with it. She whimpered with each hit and started wailing.
I didn’t care. This felt good. This felt cathartic. Why was me heart beating so loud? Why was I fighting off a smile? There was this cracking sound and before I knew it, the blood from her nose splattered across the floor.
Her arms finally came up to protect her head, but that didn’t deter me. She turned over on her side, but I still didn’t stop. I gave one good strong swing and she left out a blood-curdling scream just as there was an audible crack in the room. Did I manage to break her arm?
“Ali! Aliena!”
Me head shot up and I didn’t raise up the chair again. Thomas stood there with his hand out, signaling for me to stop.
“Enough.” He breathily pleaded. “Enough now.” He took a hesitant step toward me, as if I were a fucking animal.
How fucking insulting!
I couldn’t help it. I was just so mad. I raised the chair and slammed it against the wall of the bar top. I could hear people gasp. All that was left in me hand was one of the chair’s legs.
I panted for breath. “There. Now that’s enough.” I ran a hand through me hair, effectively getting all me hair out of me face. The girl was whimperin' incessantly. It was so annoying. I kicked her softly as I stepped over her body and told her to shut up.
“Come on. Let’s go.” I called out to me friends. I could hear their shuffling behind me as I continued walking on.
Just as I was abar to pass Tommy, he caught me arm.
“We’re gonna talk about this at home.” He whispered. His tone stern and chastising.
I tsked and yanked me arm away from him. I marched on and caught the eyes of me employers. The look in their eyes were mixed with astonishment and disapproval.
I rolled me eyes, hard before I opened the doors with bang.
“All right! Show’s over. Go back to what you were doing.” I heard Tommy yell.
I started walking faster. When I realized me friends’ heels were clacking behind me, I turned ‘round and waited for them. I rushed to Cassie and hovered me hands over her inflamed cheek.
She caught me wrists and held them tightly.
“We need to get some ice on it. We can’t have it bruising.” I muttered while inspecting her face again.
Angie scoffed. “What the fuck was that, Aliena?” Her face was contorted in some weird mixture of anger and disbelief.
“She got what she deserved. The dumb-arse raised a hand to Cassie expecting no repercussions. I decided to give her some.” I said with a booming voice.
Cassie shook her head. “What about your hands?” She asked as she gently took me hands in hers and started to inspect them. “You punched her good. Are your knuckles swollen?”
I shrugged me shoulders. “Don’t know. I feel quite a bit of pain, though.”
Angie groaned loudly. “Of course you would feel pain. You broke her nose, Ali! You headbutted her and then beat her with a chair.”
Me head snapped toward Angie. “Thank you for the play-by-play! What’s your deal?” I asked.
She scoffed again as her hands began to join the conversation. “What’s my deal? Aliena, YOU BEAT THAT GIRL WITH A CHAIR!”
“IT WAS AN OLD WOODEN CHAIR! Look at the end of the day, I would have done that for any one of youse. She fucking busted Cassie’s lip over a man. A man, Angie! So, I busted hers.”
Cassie sniffled loudly. “Thank you.” She whispered. “Thank you.” Cassie hugged me tightly and hid her face in me neck.
It has something to do with her past. But, I wasn’t going to out her to the rest of the girls— just because they couldn’t understand.
Tina waved her hands between Angie and I. “Angelica, I’m sorry but I’m with Ali.”
Angie scoffed as her eyes bugged out of her head.
Tina continued. “Maybe the chair was excessive, but we’re all drunk. We’re drunk! That fucking bitch just straight up slapped Cassie while she had her rings on, and...and-! Belittled her! That’s not right!”
“Tina just because we are all a little drunk does not excuse violence. I was handling it!”
I scoffed and ran me hand through me hair again. “Sure, you were handling it alright! Then, why did I have to stop her from hitting you?”
Angie averted her eyes. “She wasn’t-!”
“Yes, she was and you know it. You must have seen her cock her arm and/or at least see that her fists were clenched.”
Angie looked down at the cobblestone. “It just felt a little excessive.” She whispered as she hugged herself.
So, the leader of this pack has a little bite.
I sighed while pinching the bridge of me nose. “I admit the chair was a little over the top. I just got so angry and…” Me voice trailed off. “I’m sorry for, I don’t know, upsetting you. But what I’m not sorry for is defending you and Cassie.”
We left it at that and regrouped at the house. We talked abar it a little more before I poured everyone some water and distributed the bread. Cassie insisted on icing me knuckles, so I let her. When it was ‘round two in the morning, Cassie called Simmons.
I was hugging me arms as I watched them pile into the car.
Angie’s head popped out as she said. “Remember I’m picking you up at four tomorrow, all right!”
I nodded. “Yeah, I got it.” I laughed as her head disappeared back into the car. I faced Cassie. I couldn’t help the pitiful gaze on me face.
“Thanks again for, ya know, fucking her up for me.” Cassie whispered as she picked under her nails.
I winked at her. “We’re crazy together, remember.” We shared a laugh and then a hug. But after, she climbed into the car and I waved them off. I looked ‘round and then ran back into the house.
I already had a plan. I was just going to go to sleep to avoid a very uncomfortable conversation that I did not want to go through again. It was too unpredictable.
Was I going to be confronted by just Tommy or is Polly going to be there too? Would it be a fucking family meeting? Might as well be, they’ll probably just harass me individually.
Oh fucking well!
I raced up the steps and slammed me door behind me. Me chest heaved up and down as I tried to catch me breath. I realized that I didn’t put makeup on tonight.
I’m a fucking genius!
I ran to me bed, jumped in, got comfy, then closed me eyes.
“Oi! Wake up! There’s no avoiding this, Ali.”
I jumped awake. Me heart was in me fucking throat and I threw a glare at Tommy.
“Leave me alone!” I sluggishly demanded as I went to turn ‘round in me bed.
“Aliena, there’s no avoiding this so let’s get it over with, yeah.”
I shut me eyes tightly before letting out a big sigh. I rubbed me forehead before I yanked me blankets off me body. I heard Tommy walk out rather than see it. I got to me feet and walked after ‘em.
As I extended me right hand fingers’, they throbbed in pain. I’m sure if Cassie hadn’t hounded me to ice them, they would be in much worse condition.
We walked all the way into the family meeting room that was in the betting shop. Lights were lit, people in their usual spots. Esme wasn’t here, though.
That’s nice.
Polly with hands on her hips walked ‘til she was at Tommy’s side.
“You wanna tell us what that was all about?” She pointedly asked me.
I sighed while I rubbed me forehead again. “The woman hit Cassie. This man came up to her and started chattin’ her up. Turns out the fella was taken. The woman directly confronted Cassie as the problem. Called her names. Called her a homewrecker and said she was a prostitute. That’s when she slapped Cassie with rings on her hand.”
They all just stared at me blankly.
Well, fucking say something! Say it wasn’t me own fight! Say that they could’ve started this and not the woman. Say that I did a good job, or I had no right doing what I did! Say that I was out of control. ASK ME WHAT’S WRONG WITH ME!
I looked down at the floorboard. “I knew it wasn’t me own fight, but Cassie is me best friend. And I wasn’t thinking clearly. I had tossed back like three gin and tonics after drinking all that whiskey in the snug. It won’t happen again.”
Tommy sniffed, flicked his nose, then spoke. “Right, guess that’s it then. Don’t let it happen again, Ali.”
Me head shot up and I blinked a lot.
That was it?
I just nodded and headed up the stairs. As I gently closed me bedroom door behind me, I slid down it with me hands hiding me face. Me body shook violently as I inaudibly sobbed.
I woke up with a headache. Not a hangover, but a headache. Luckily, I had a day off today. Afterall, today was me actual birthday. So, I turned ‘round and shut me eyes. I wasn’t going back to sleep, I knew that wasn’t happening— but I just didn’t want to get up yet.
Me hand was throbbing. I tried clenching and unclenching me hand as a way to soothe it. Just like the day before, I took me time getting up. But, I didn’t start getting ready.
I took off the dress I fell asleep in and picked out me fuzzy black sweater and grey joggers to match. I ran a hand over me face before sighing and dropping me hip to the side. I racked me hand in me hair, pushing it away from me face, and then walked over to me desk. I opened the drawer and pulled out me art book.
I tossed it on me desk and flipped it open to a blank page. I just sat there and pondered abar what I should try drawing. I blew a raspberry before I snapped me fingers as the thought came to me.
I was gonna try and draw Tommy using watercolours.
I spent the whole morning working on it ‘til I couldn’t stand the ache in me stomach anymore. I sighed while racking me hair back again. I got up and walked downstairs.
I was fairly greeted by the shouts of men coming from the betting shop. I walked to the kitchen and grabbed the bread nonchalantly. I cut meself two slices, kept the knife in me hand, then grabbed the jam with the other.
I sat down with one leg tucked into me thigh on the chair while the other was bent. Grabbed the knife ‘n began to spread the jelly ‘round as I yawned. I took two bites before I decided I desperately needed water to wash it down.
I strolled over to the cabinet and pulled out a glass. We drank from the tap, so that’s what I did. As I was drinking me water, the front door opened.
For fuck’s sake.
I silently prayed to God that it wasn’t who I thought it was. And sure enough, Tommy Shelby came into view. I mouthed, “Fuck,” before sitting back on me chair. I could feel his eyes on me. I kept me gaze locked on the table.
Tommy cleared his throat ‘n I instinctively raised me head. Tommy grabbed his cap off of his head ‘n held it in one hand as he pulled out a chair. He groaned softly as he sat down.
He tsked. “So, Ali. You wanna tell me what yesterday was really about?”
I blinked. “I already told you what it was abar.”
He titled his head and his lips pursed a little. His eyes flickered to mine.
Was he trying to say something with his eyes? ‘Cause it felt like it. It was like he was begging me to tell him me troubles. But, I didn’t want to.
“Are you sure, Ali? You’re tellin’ me you did all that because she roughed up your friend.”
I rolled me eyes as me tongue prodded the inside of me cheek. I kept quiet before scoffing. “She just caught me on a bad day. I was already drunk ‘n agaited. Angie said something that ticked me off earlier. And I think me Aunt Flo is abar to make a visit, so yeah.” I smiled at him mockingly before I took a big bite of me scran.
He studied me face for a little more before he tapped his finger on the table and rose up suddenly. “Right.” He muttered before he left the room.
After that interaction, I scarfed me scran down and went back upstairs. I worked on me painting ‘til it was four. I heard that familiar honk and cursed in surprise. I was lost in painting. I scrambled ‘round to collect me things. I was going to stay over the weekend.
Her incessant honking was raising me blood pressure and I fought back the urge to shout at her. I was zipping ‘round me room gathering everything. I slug me backpack on and flew out the door.
Just as I was grabbing me coat, a voice caught me. “Aliena, love. Are you sure this is a good idea?”
I stilled and looked at Polly. “How do you mean?”
She looked at me with a concerned face. “Should you be partying with what happened yesterday?”
I averted me eyes. “It’s me birthday, Pol.” I whispered.
She didn’t say anything in response.
I looked up at her before taking me coat hurriedly off the hook and running backwards. “Love you, Pol! Bye!”
As always, Cassie was waiting for me outside the car. We hugged and then climbed inside of the car. We brought up what happened again ‘n really cleared the air.
I just wanted it to go away, ya know. Be forgotten. It literally happened yesterday night. It wasn’t going away anytime soon.
When we got to the flat, the girls wasted no time pushing me into a chair.
“What are youse doing?” I asked through me laughter. I noticed there were other women in the room as well.
“I hired these women to do our hair and makeup. I want you to look your best! I even hired a photographer. But first, the dress you will be wearing!” Angie divulged as she walked over to the closet. She reached inside and pulled out a silk green dress.
It looked exactly like the one Kiera Knightly wore in Atonement. Me own gasps were not the only ones heard throughout the room.
Tina came into me view and took the dress out of Angie’s hand slowly. “I showed my family’s dressmaker the drawing you drew of me in this dress. I asked them to make one just like it. I wanted you to have the real thing.” She walked over to me and I took the dress into me hands as she held onto the hanger.
I stroked the fabric, silk. “Oh, Tina. It’s so beautiful. Just how I-!” Just how I remembered it. I hummed with a painful smile on me face. I hugged her tightly and kissed her cheek. “Thank you.” I whispered in her ear.
Cassie clapped her hands. “Alright. Let’s get dressed before we get our hair and makeup done.”
We did as she suggested. Once we were all done changing, we sat down on the chairs where the cosmetologists were standing patiently. In a very movie-esque fashion, the cosmetologists flapped open their smocks and draped it over us, simultaneously.
Angie was sitting in the chair beside me.
I looked over at her. “Angie, you didn’t have-!”
She held up her hand, effectively shuttin’ me up. “I didn’t have to, but I wanted to. So, let’s all just enjoy this.”
The cosmetologist began by curling me hair in loose waves and then proceeded to give me a faux bob. Something I could never achieve if I did this by meself. I struck up a conversation with her and she was happy to give me some tips.
I looked at meself in the mirror. I couldn’t believe how me hair looked. I looked like I finally belonged in this era. I couldn’t stop the Cheshire-cat grin on me face. But I had to relax it as ordered by the cosmetologist.
When it was all said ‘n done, they women left and I opened Cassie’s present. She got me an amethyst earrings and necklace set this time for me ma’. When I started to tear up, the girls rushed to me and begged me to stop before it could even begin. That got a laugh out of me.
The earrings were Long Cluster Gemstone Earrings and the necklace was silver with an amethyst teardrop. I rushed to put them on and then it was time to go.
God was Angie’s mansion intimidating. Even more so that it was filled with people from high society that were unfamiliar to me. I knew I was going to meet with a lot of people tonight.
The party was in a light swing when we arrived. I stuck to Cassie like gum on a shoe. While I desperately wanted to find a table and stand ground there or find some secluded place so that I could relax, I was stuck with Cassie— greeting her other friends and acquaintances.
It was so embarrassing when they asked abar me family. Only to tell them that I’m an orphan and I met Cassie when I was giving her directions. I didn’t miss the faces. The faces of people who sneered at me. Teased me for me status behind me back. Made stories up abar why they were keeping me ‘round. Maybe even for the dress. It was a 1940s style dress, I think.
I didn’t expect to feel this way. I thought I could move past it, bury it all down. But, I was finding it harder to do than expected. Still, I kept a polite smile and dug me nails into me palm.
When the mansion was packed, Angie ushered me to the stage where the band was playing. She made a big spectacle of it.
“Everyone, I gathered you all here to celebrate my good friend, Aliena Welsh’s 18th birthday.” She clapped which was mimicked by everyone in the crowd.
For pride, I suppressed the need to cover me face and spazz out. I kept that tight, polite smile on me face.
“Bring out the cake.” Angie shouted. On her orders, men in tuxes— the stewards or butlers or manservants— rolled out a cake and left it in front of us. Angie guided me where to stand. “We’ll sing Happy Birthday on three, everyone. One, two, three!”
A whole crowd was singing happy birthday to me. It was absolutely mortifying. I kept me gaze as Cassie, who was singing with a thumbs up. She knew I was freaking out.
When the whole singing was over with, I made the same wish I did yesterday. I walked off the stage with Angie. I rushed over to Cassie and hide me face in her neck.
“They were all looking at me.” I whimpered.
She rubbed me back. “I know. I know, honey. How about we get a piece of cake, eat, then get fucking drunk. Huh? Sound alright?”
I looked up at her and nodded. So, that’s what we did. We ate a piece of cake and marched over to the bar.
“Oooh!” I exclaimed. “Let’s play a drinking game!”
Cassie furrowed her eyebrows. “What game?”
“I think it’s called blowjob.”
She gasped while slapping her hand over her mouth. “Oh my god! Ailena!”
“Look we order three shots each and whoever drinks it the fastest without using their hands wins. You game?”
Cassie looked hesitantly. Her hand covering her mouth to hide her smile. “Fine! What the hell, right? You’re the birthday girl, after all.”
I cheered and called over the bartender.
We could only play one round of that game. I got buzzed fairly quickly since it was vodka. But we settled for beer.
We danced, sat down, drank, smoked, and eventually I got so drunk that I started dancing modernly. I was swaying me hips while holding a bottle of whatever, dancing to the music in me head.
I felt hands wrap ‘round me arms. I turned ‘round to see Angie.
“Angie!” I squealed before going in to hug her. She giggled before titling me head back.
“Aliena, you need to slow it down.”
I blew raspberries. “I’m ‘aving fun. ‘Ave fun with me.” I kept her hand in mine as I leaned away and started dancing again.
Angie sighed while clutching her forehead. “Fine, I’ll have fun with you. Just! Stop dancing like that!”
I shrugged me shoulder and stilled instantly while a piece of hair fell into me eyes. “Okay.” Then, I pulled her to the bar where we chatted and drank.
I don’t know where I was. I was just extremely nauseous. I used the walls to support me as I stumbled along. The entrance doors were in me sight. I walked faster and felt me mouth water. I immediately doubled over into a plant and vomited.
When I was done, I stood straight while wiping me mouth. I gathered what was left in me mouth and spat it out. I whimpered as I clutched me tummy.
I stumbled down the steps. Me legs were shaking like leaves. I groaned and plopped down on them. I bent over and started taking them off.
“Fucking devil shoes.” I grumbled. When I was done, I wobbled me way back up to me feet and walked further out in the backyard garden area, place, thingy.
I chortled at me thoughts.
When I got tired of walking, I sat down on some undistinguishable patch of grass. I was surrounded by acres of sophisticatedly cut grass.
I used me arms to support me as I leaned forward. I picked at the grass for a while ‘til it hit me.
I just threw up in one of Angie’s plants...
Stutteringly, me arms gave up on me and I was laying down. I raised me arms to cover me face as it started to contort. A sob escaped me lips. Me shoulders shook violently.
I’m turning into an alcoholic. I drank ‘til I threw up in me mate’s flowers.
What’s wrong with me!
