Huh, TIL.
#am i starting a trash fire with this because i hope not#i stayed away from this whole thing for a while but i decided to actually do my own research because i was tired of not knowing and wow#this was very enlightening and tbh the explanations make total sense to me#so tldr from the looks of it 'latinx' was a term that apparently originated in latin lgbt+ communities#then it slowly entered academia as a purely written reference#but then people (mostly non-spanish speakers) started using the same term as a way to make latino/latina 'gender neutral'#mostly leftist people#but apparently 'latino' is already gender neutral (ig it serves both masculine and gender neutral purposes whereas latina is only feminine)#and 'latine'/'latin' are neutral as well#plus 'latinx' is not an intuitive thing to pronounce or say in spanish so it just doesn't vibe with the spanish language#so now it just comes off as another culture trying to strong-arm a language that doesn't even belong to them into being more gender neutral#but it misses the point by assuming latino/latine/latin isn't already a thing. and it's super offensive on multiple levels.#i gotta lie down because wow! i understand why so many people hate that word now#latino#latinx#latine#xenophobia ment cw#racism ment cw#colonialism ment cw#just in case
