{🌸}- She wanted to raise her voice when she heard what he had said; tell him how he should never wish for such a thing, but that would only make the world’s biggest hypocrite. Ever since that trial -- since her beloved’s murder -- how often had she wished that the fire had consumed her, or that the bullet had taken her life? All she could do instead was exhale a sigh, the weight of her regrets and sorrows weighing down on her shoulders.

“Apollo,” the queen’s voice was gentle, soothing as any mother’s would be. “You are not cursed with bad luck; you have been faced with many horrible situations, something that no child should ever have to face. You were caught up in the conflict of others at too young of an age, and because of my sister’s awful actions, your true family was cruelly ripped away from you. If I had been more aware of her true intentions, none of that would have happened, so I must apologize to you for it all.

“If anyone should have died in that fire, it should have been me, but it was not, just as it was not you.” Amara let her eyes drift closed as she inhaled a silent breath. He was family now, whether he wanted to believe that or not, and so she was fine allowing him to see her weakness, but he needed something more, she could tell. The only question was if she could really be the one to provide it. Could she actually help her second son see his worth -- see how he was needed and cherished by those around him, when she could hardly do that for her first son?

“You claim that everyone you know has either passed on or been arrested, but that is not true.” Delicate fingers rested beneath his chin, tilting his head up gently to look at her. “I distinctly remember quite the crowd being here to support you when you returned for that trial, and I still see that foreign detective assisting you and Nahyuta at crime scenes, and he is also still alive and well, and not behind bars. Rayfa also speaks quite highly of you, and she is still here. Datz, while he certainly is a frequent visitor to jail, he is still around and cares very much for you.” When she realized that she was perhaps beginning to ramble, she shook her head. 

“My point, mera bachcha*, is that you are not alone in this world; it hurts to lose the people you love, I know that very well.” Her hand went to rest over her chest, over her hidden burn scar. She had thrown her own country into chaos and lost her husband -- nearly losing both of her children in the process as well. “But none of it was your fault. The people you have lost have not been lost because of you. If you truly believed that the fire should have taken your life, that it was all your fault, then you would not be here right now having this conversation with me. You are strong, Apollo; you carry a strength that one mightier than even a dragon has ever carried. We must live on in the memory of those we have lost.”
