*Kind of an art/feminist analysis, though maybe kinda dumb. Feel free to disagree!*
Disclaimer: this obviously isn’t the case of ALL who partake in this behavior, but I do think there’s some truth to my thoughts, even if I don’t have any concrete evidence besides my own eyes.
I’m someone who draws. While I’m not super amazing, I’m fairly competent at certain things and could be better if I wasn’t so lazy.
As I’ve gotten older, my ability to draw humans, in particular women since that’s what I seem to prefer, has improved but it’s also changed a lot. When I look back at my older stuff, from my teen years, the women were extremely pornofied. That’s not to say the drawings were particular lewd, but I mean in in their features and their bodies. They always had the huge eyes, tiny noses, plump lips, exaggerated hourglass figure, very big breasts and so on. Obviously this isn’t pornographic, but I call this version of women pornofied because it’s what’s women’s standards are shaped by and it’s the version of women that men expect to see as examples of beauty, often due or at least part in due to their pornography watching habits and general tendency to dehumanise women.
I didn’t watch porn neither then or now but I was obviously still influenced by the standards forced upon women and that could be seen in my art.
Now when I draw women, they are all types of people. They sometimes have blemishes, sometimes smile and expression lines, they are sometimes bald, they are sometimes fat, sometimes extremely skinny, they are different races, with actually different features not suffering from same face syndrome.
My point in this is that I think besides having gotten better, I also think my age and maturity is a HUGE cause for this change. Because art does reflect our views to some degree. I don’t think art can ever be fully apolitical. At least not a collection of art from the same person. And how men tend to draw women, besides their love for nakedness and empty eyes, is usually this hyper “idealised”, unrealistic caricature of women. To me that speaks of immaturity nowadays. To not be able to see beyond what is and what isn’t conventionally pretty. Teen me was horrified at the idea of not drawing what was deemed pretty. Nowadays I wanna depict what actually looks like real living humans. I still make these people up from my fantasy, but they look like folks you could meet on the street. I’ve studied enough faces, met with enough variety in personality, looks and walks of life to try and portray that and prefer that. Now I see the naked women drawings as a lack of understanding of women as actual humans. I’m not talking about anatomy studies but actual art where the point of the woman’s nakedness is just to be naked and “nice to look at”? Yeah that’s the ones. Women partake in this type of art too. As said, I did as a teen too. But I think when a person doesn’t progress from it, they show themselves, in my eyes, to have a fundamental flawed view of women’s humanity. And it’s no surprise that many who don’t involve from that type of art eventually go on to draw some iteration of hentai. Because that’s the next step isn’t it? Being incapable appreciating women just living without pleasing our eyes transforms into, let her perform sexual acts full on. Art can easily show the degrading views of the artists and my insecure past self was no better, even if it was directed inwards. My art have improved in part because I have grown to love my womanhood. My femaleness. Myself.

man I sure love getting a photo album compilation of myself through the years for Christmas from my parents (they did it for all us kids) and then having to see how I look Now at the end of it, and in the candid photos they tried to snap of us
like... I'm generally fine with how I look when I look in the mirror. I can recognize I've aged and am not in my early 20s anymore and it's fine.
but the second I see myself in photos, let alone photos where I'm next to other people... it's a whole different story.
I will start by saying I've always had body issues. always. even outside of gender issues. I've always looked at myself in photos and had dysmorphic issues and felt like I looked amorphous and Too Big, even though i look at those photos now and am shocked at how different I perceive them now versus back then. I was fine. I was in the ideal weight range for my height. I looked pretty much the same from the second I went through puberty at 13 through my mid-to-late 20s.
my family has always instilled this notion of Having To Look A Certain Way through constant diet talk and gossip of other family that has "let themselves go". even my 20-something-year-old brothers, who are gym bros, worry about being "fat". my sister has always had these "teeny tiny" nicknames because of how small she has always been, and she's almost always been a size zero. I got my dad's genes where I'm stocky instead.
I think part of why I recoil so badly when I see myself in photos is how much I now look like my father, and also my grandfather. who are short stocky people, and that's not a bad thing! I actively look at people who are also short and stocky to remind myself that they are beautiful and I have that same body type, and that it's okay. and yet... aside from my dad Nobody Else Looks Like That in the photos when I see them. everyone else has borderline magazine-quality bodies, proportioned in all the expected ways. and then there's me, notably thicker and doughier and not photogenic to begin with.
I'm not even that big!!! I'm not small by any means, either. my BMI is like... 27. I don't know my exact weight at any given moment bc I avoid obsessively weighing myself, but it's anywhere between 154 and 157 lbs. I'm 5'3" or so. I am a vet tech so I am on my feet and do a fair amount of physical labor daily.
I can't tell if the way I see myself in photos now is just more of that body dysmorphia nonsense, but I can definitely see that I am bigger and the number I see on the scale now vs. five-ish years ago reflects that. I don't like that the clothes I've had for so many years are tighter now or just don't fit anymore. I don't like that even if I do make myself miserable with dieting (I've tried and failed a few times now; between living in a place where fresh food is a) expensive and b) the "fast food" options have VERY little variety and c) I'm so worked-to-death that I have a very hard time prepping things on a regular basis it's very difficult.) or exercise (once again, I work at least ten-hour workdays and I am very tired and sore after work a lot so trying to find the time to exercise in the 3-4 hours after I get home to when I go to bed is not very feasible, and not even taking into account how horribly self-conscious I am about being perceived exercising even by my own spouse. I could flail around in the tiny living area for however long making gross physical exertion noises when it was Just Me but when there's another human being around, nope. can't do it.)
in the past I would get on the scale sometimes, see a certain number, and dial back on this or that and get back to where I wanted it. but now that I live where I do, versus before where I was minutes away from numerous options for grocery shopping and fresh healthy take-out any any moment's notice; not to mention how much more time I had in a day to myself... I don't think I can.
#body image issues#weight gain#shut up acro#feel free to ignore#very rambly text#sorry I just need to vent somewhere#basically my body dysmorphia got set off by certain photo displays from my family#and thanks to all the Holiday Weight Jokes#I'm extra bogged down by my thoughts that I already struggle with#might delete later

Title: Pythian pratar / La Pythie vous parle Author: Liv Strömquist Translator: Sophie Jouffreau Last book of 2024! In Pythian Pratar, Liv Strömquist explores topics of life coaching, self-help, personal development, beauty gurus, and other turboadvice we've probably all had at least a online phase about. She popularizes social science studies to reflect on a variety of topics which unfold into seven distinct chapters. And it's all a comic book! And it's fat as hell. You could probably use it for its eigth, secret whisper: knock someone out with it. Just get one good hit in!
I received this comic book as a gift very recently, and you know what? It's a VERY GOOD gift. Do you have a 20-something living their life around you? Do they have at least two brain cells colliding from time to time in that bone box of theirs? They will probably enjoy this book. In fact, do you have a human being that lives in these trying times around you, of undetermined age? They might enjoy this colorful little brick.
I'll admit that my first impression was less than positive. Life advice, yknow... Was this gonna be the usual sludge of either inadequate or too-generic advice? Well. It's not advice at all, mainly. The book does open on a summary of sorts, which condenses each chapter into a few words of advice. But you're very quick to forget those, as they never reappear. What the chapters get into, however, is very yummy. It's a little delightful treat of pop-sci, which I would consider rereading in the future. It comes full with a bibliography of the texts and theory that she popularizes, which I would also consider reading, lol -- but those probably make for far LESS good gifts. Pop-sci is one of the great gifts of humans to each other and we ought to use it.
A great comic book for young adults with access to the internet. Also probably Sweden's first contribution to my shelves.
A bit shocked that Strömquist has so rarely been translated into English. I had never heard of her before, but she seems to have a pretty solid body of works preceding Pythia Pratar, so I fully expected that if it was available in French, it would be available in English. Maybe try to lobby your local publishing industry, beloved reader. Simple and easy!

American Beauty Standard: A Brief History and Modern Application
I learned this in an anthropology class and I don’t remember the resources, but I know one of them was Tocqueville talking about the American obsession with committees and associations as a way to accomplish tasks with people from tons of different cultures and backgrounds and no formal aristocratic class.
So, back in the day of colonial America all the way through like... probably modern day if we’re honest, wealthy families that came to America kept strong ties with relatives or positions in their home countries. When their sons came of age to marry, they would often find a wealthy upper-class woman from their home country or ethnic background to wed, which meant that wealth circulated the culture it was coming from. A wealthy English lad would go to London and find himself a lady to bring to the US, a wealthy Frenchman would stay with his family in Paris or wherever, the would tour the continent blah blah, and come home with an upstanding lady of the gentry.
UNLESS an American girl could catch their interests first. This was why American girls were taught independent skills (homemaking rather than the class skills of entertaining), why they were allowed to marry for love (lack of a gentry class and singular cultural/social rules to follow), and why, at the end of the day, beauty became the most valuable tool.
Because a poor American girl who was beautiful and useful could out compete the European class rules of etiquette to secure herself a wealthy husband. And if you start there and work your way forward, our obsessions with smart or pretty girls (but watch out for too-smart or too-pretty), our beauty pageants and cosmetics advertising, our taboos and traditions, our girl vs. girl competition, it all starts to make sense.
Because being beautiful, witty, and useful meant you could be noticed and loved or admired, and married to a wealthy man. Wealth meant comfort and comfort meant safety and safety meant security and security meant freedom. Isn’t that what we all want? Isn’t that what we still want? Aren’t we still just competing for independence, for respect and freedom? Same tools, in many ways the same world. Girls fighting over college admissions, internships, medical research funds, they aren’t any different from girls competing in beauty pageants or arts, it’s always about freedom and for some, beauty is a way to get there.
There are a lot of socially aware people on the internet and I just wanted to add this nugget of history to the conversation about beauty standards. We seem to be aware that being able to follow trends is a sign of wealth, we seem to easily discuss that beauty standards themselves are an impossible oppressive tool to control and manipulate, and we are perfectly blunt about the wealth of industries capitalizing off insecurities. I wanted to bring this history into the conversation as well. Because like it or not, competition and our ability to be “wives” has historically been part of “American” culture since colonization, and that includes an incredible amount of isolated puritan and protestant extremists coming to the “new world” because their countries called them out on some bullshit or maintained economically exclusive advantageous relationships with their leaders.
Anyway: American [white] female beauty standards begin with competition for wealthy husbands and the illusion of comfort and freedom they could provide (with plenty of truth to the illusion) and still exists today. American girls were taught to “make” a home as a resource for their husbands while their European counterparts (of the same [similar] class) were often taught to entertain and host within the home as an accessory to her husband’s success, as expected by their class and/or station (often equally oppressive).
There are so many other interesting components to the conversation as well and I just figure that if we’re interested in having it at all, I might throw some other things out here:
WARNING: Long geeking rant about individual body adaptions and why they are incredibly beautiful follows:
Like how male beauty also evolved, with Americans emphasizing the fitness of a laborer or farmer, becoming the independent middle class, while their middle class European counterparts were often more slight and “intelligent” (relative, as perceived by access to education) businessmen, lawyers, doctors, etc., as they retained the inherited gentry and the American self-made man became more desirable to American women who had no single cultural courtship ritual and so relied on love and picking out a reliable husband based on their own choosing (which leads to its own conversation on American victim-blaming in assaults on females, especially when combined with that puritan past).
Which is then complicated further when looking at pockets of immigration where different adapted physical male bodies are living next to one another in America (the Dutch and Polish of W. Mich are a great example). They are separated by countries in Europe, so their different builds are suddenly compared in an entirely new environment that doesn’t necessarily fulfill their previous adaptions (MI isn’t as cold as Poland, so the shorter stature isn’t as useful, while the sexual selection of the tall Dutch male remains, it isn’t as differentiated from other larger Europeans (like lowland Germans and Scandinavians), and so isn’t as genetically insulated.
Anyway, these are all focused on “white America,” other cultures and ethnicities will also have changing and adaptive standards for different reasons. There are also some we will share as a whole culture. We’re having smaller families so each child will want to be the most healthy available. Guess what big booties are a sign of? Healthy babies (the type of rich fat stored in the butt is used to help form baby brains and shit), so as a general correlation, humans tend to figure out that curves = healthy babies. As our family-size expectations get smaller with the lowering of infant mortality and rise of individual life expectancy/health/comfort of average citizen, and as we push the age of first conception, we want to make sure that one-shot kid is healthy af.
Being black anywhere but the American South is hard, and even that’s muggy and wet as opposed to the drier conditions of the west coast of Africa many African Americans were adapted for when brought as slaves. Which means the likelihood of being vitamin D deficient is higher, without being too crass or negating to address social racism issues, I’ll round it out and say we’re all going to eventually have a Brazil effect, where people living in areas for a long while will adapt to them or “breed into” them and we all become a similar middle skintone. The SW US is going to be more “Mexican” because that’s the “proper” (ie most useful) adaptive skin tone to protect from the changing climate there, while those in a place like the Olympic Peninsula in WA are going to be a bit lighter as an adaption to the weather, but probably not as white as Europeans.
What is natural for an area’s skintone is also based on diet. The Inuit and Sami live at a similar parallel but the Inuit are much darker skinned on average. Why? Well, they eat more fish and seafood with Omega3s and Vitamin D (therefore needing less of the Vitamin D to enter through skin from sunlight) and live often on open plains (therefore absorbing more sunlight when it is there), while the Sami eat more red meats from reindeer herds with less Vitamin D, and travel through fields/forests (therefore needing more Vitamin D to enter through skin which results in lighter skin).
My favorite statistic I ever learned was that on average, an African’s skin can absorb NINE TIMES more sunlight than their European counterpart without getting burned. Nine times! For one hour in the hazy European sun, a black person would need to spend nine (+) to get proper Vitamin D amounts, while in Africa, a white person after ONE HOUR would begin to burn from too much uv. That’s so cool! Bodies are crazy awesome!
That applies to hair texture as well, black hair is often coiled to protect the head (you know, cus we stand on two legs and it’s in the sun all the time). Two inches of coiled black hair can dispose of that 9x uv by holding onto water and a bunch of other crazy amazing processes, while two inches of white hair generally dries quickly and lies flat against the head to insulate and keep warm, not expel heat.
Hair, eye, and skin color are all affected by melanin counts in the body (or melanocytes, which is where melanin is created, including collections of melanin at melanocytes which cause freckles and moles!), lots of melanin produced by the body makes someone darker skinned, but that doesn’t mean they need the coiled hair protection from the sun, which gives us so many varieties of follicle shape (which is what defines the curl tightness or looseness of a hair, with round holes producing straight hair and curved/slanted holes producing curls and coils like how you curl a Christmas ribbon with scissors, which means yes, you can have curly patches on your skull, your hair will change as you grow and based on your diet, hydration, products, etc.).
Having little to no melanin makes someone “albino,” or extremely light (which affects eyesight as having little or no pigment in the iris doesn’t shield the retina from light, though some may simply have extremely low pigment with light blue eyes). There are in-between colors like red hair, hazel/green eyes, and highly-freckled skin that result from different concentrations of melanin in different parts of the body, and there are things like heterochromia (different color eyes) which result from different concentrations of melanin in the same body part, and other things like Vitiligo (what Michael Jackson had), where concentrations in melanin change overtime, in this case from the shutting down of melanocytes which then produce little or no pigment for the skin, causing patches of whiteness.
There are so many ways for bodies to be different from one another and it’s incredible when you start to understand how unique our individual combinations are! Nose size is a direct correlation to air humidity, as are our sinuses. Face shape can often be the result of language, people from the American midwest accent will have rounder cheek apples from pulling their mouths wide and working different muscles than those with say, an RP British accent who pull their jaws down and cheeks in instead of wide on many vowels, resulting in more defined cheekbones. Jawlines are a symbol of genetic diet, if you have a less defined jaw, your ancestors were probably coastal people, more adapted to seafood proteins, which requires less chewing than those in higher altitude and mountain regions, which would require herds of red meat or poultry for protein, which is more chewing, plus the different textures plants must have to grow at different altitudes and climates. This is a loose correlation and there are plenty of other factors that combine to make different results, but they always fascinate me!
Why are African men often stereotypically faster than Europeans? Because their adapted environment is often flat savannah and adaptions for running long distances and fitting the climate generally involve being tall to expel more heat through the skin (while a cold-adapted person is generally more stout and short to keep more heat in with less skin surface area – there are always exceptions for other reasons, the Dutch are tall due to sexual preference of females, the African Baka people are shorter due to reasons still being discovered, most recently it is thought to due with denying puberty growth hormones because denying them retains immunity to certain dangers found in the environment or provides some advantages over niche environments). Part of being adapted tall and slim to dispel heat (Allen and Bergman’s laws for you curiosos) is that pelvises are more narrow, males even more than females, and narrow hips mean more straight femurs rather than the slight bow of wider/rounder hips, which means, if you go to physics, a faster turnover with no need for overcorrecting the bow, and less strain on joints. While a European body adapted to its environment would require different survival adaptations, the bow of the femur allows for less speed, but often more agility for moving through forests and up and down highland slopes and rocky craigs. Again, there are always exceptions, which is why you cannot identify race by a skeleton, though there are probabilities.
Adaptions to altitude are their own category and they begin from birth and before. It’s so cool! Being born in high altitudes develops larger lungs for taking in more oxygen in the less oxygen-dense atmosphere, which can develop into barrel lung, where the chest is nice and round like a barrel to allow the lungs full expansion. That’s so cool! When I go to higher altitudes, my sea-level coastal body is just like... wheeze. I also broke a bunch of ribs and they don’t expand easily due to complications, so it’s even harder for me to be at a higher altitude now, being adapted to it if I have to live there sounds ideal.
We seem to understand things like race are a result of biological adaptation to environments, but we don’t often carry on the conversation past that. What does adapting to climate change look like? What about colonization and immigration? What about pollution? What adaptions happened in the past, did we lose them when they were no longer necessary? How long does it take for people to become adapted to a new environment? Generations? Why do we socially present some things as more desirable than others? Why do we create beauty standards at all? How does a shared culture of diverse backgrounds even have a “standard?”
Everything comes down to predicting health and trying to live longer, to protect ourselves from danger. Whether that’s trying to be accepted by an outsider community or blending in with the “standard” at large, our understanding of beauty will continue to change as our social, political, economic, and climate/environment aspects of our shared culture change as well. For me, learning about why my body is the way it is was endlessly enlightening. Any doubts about my big nose (which was also broken, so bigger than my relatives’) are quelled by understanding that it helps humidify and avoid that horrible feeling I hate in dry air where it feels like my nose is going to start bleeding (I’ve only gotten it in saunas though). Moving around the country helped too, I understood a lot more about the purpose of those adaptions and saw how different localized beauty is marketed.
In Southern California, along the coast, the ocean spray makes everyone’s hair a bit curly, the humidity is high and I loved it (Jake, not so much). But the sun got to me. I got so many new freckles and my skin was always a bit dry, I had to work extra hard to stay hydrated and moisturized (even though my Polish side tans really well and I don’t burn easily, I was always dehydrated). Then we moved up to Seattle and I loved it even more! My hair stayed curly (though I’ve since learned that shower water and products make the biggest difference), I got more freckles as my skin adapted to not needing so much melanin and my hair got a lot darker for a while, my eyes seemed to get lighter in San Diego, which was crazy (and kinda cool). Then we moved to the desert-desert, the straight Mojave, and my body did not love it. I smelled all the time (dry air, my sweat is made for humid, but not too humid lol, that’s why I think white people smell in Asia and it’s not just a stereotype), my hair got sun-bleached and I lost a lot of the curl, it wasn’t the worst, but I was only there for a few months. Then we came to New England and I started to notice the change in trends and how my own preferences had changed in beauty and fashion. Marginal peripheral influence will do a lot and I can’t imagine living in that with none of the “qualifying” standards.
So basically, I’m writing this book of a post to say that if we step back and look at all the pieces, they have reasons, some of them shallow, others valid, but that they are changing and will always be changing and so is all of humanity. Your body is doing amazing things to protect you every single day, beyond digesting your food and feeding you dopamine. Every single thing about it has a purpose and a goal or a reason, except for maybe genetic mutations. I’m not going to go stand on a hill and say you’re missing an arm or your body hates you for a reason, my body built my stomach outside of me during fetal development and I promise that was just a fuck up, there was no reason (but my mom will tell you there was and it was God).
Bodies are crazy cool, sometimes they mess up and make cancer and don’t notice and it gets too big and we need help. Sometimes they only have one red-haired gene and we get blonde and brunette men with confusing bright red beards (lol, Jake), sometimes we’re in the middle of an adaption and we get patchy beards while living in a society that values them (looking at you, boys from genetic lines of men adapting to humidity where beards kinda suck or cultures that don’t like them). Sometimes we have been moved to a place where our genes aren’t as advantageous or actually hurt us and we don’t know about it or have to work harder than others to stay healthy, and sometimes our native or natural diet isn’t available to us and we work really hard to stay healthy but our bodies just don’t respond because they can’t or won’t.
For some people it feels overwhelming, or blasphemous, to talk about humanity as a whole, to look at ourselves as a single version of all the endless possible combinations of changes that can happen in a body, but I find it incredible! There is no one like you, but there are people who are similar, there are places where you’re perfect and there are cultural adaptions to help you when you’re not. Understanding the reason or purpose behind the body’s reasons for selection or change, combined with the lottery of your localized DNA options from your parents and potential genetic mutations during development and later in life, understanding that the body is always changing and adapting to what is best for you or catching up from past changes can explain so much of ourselves!
I just think it’s really cool!
I used to geek out about it a lot more and Jake would play a game where he would point at a face and ask me to guess their genetic heritage or combination of peoples/geographies. He still does it sometimes, I’m pretty good at it, but it’s more fun to be wrong and surprised, if I’m honest. Humans are just cool.
That being said, if there’s a thing about yourself you don’t like or don’t understand, that you feel doesn’t fit in to beauty standards and never will (for me, it was my nose and freckles, why so many freckles?), shoot me a message and I’ll do my best to tell you why it might be a thing so you can appreciate the incredible diversity of your own body as it adapts to your ancestors’ forced or willing migrations and changes to fit its new environments!
American beauty standards are complicated, but if there is one thing they always revolve around, it’s a humble confidence in your own value. I found that value in others, in seeing how intricate and unique humans are from each other, which lead to an appreciation of my own unique pieces. No industry standard or media pacification can take that or change it or judge it, because it’s your body doing its absolute best with the tools it has to protect you and make you the safest and most comfortable you can be in any place of the world. <3

mostly nonsims
I know this is a simblr, but this is going to be a mostly non sims related post. Trigger warning ahead***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Today marks the end of the Eating Disorder Awareness Week. You may have noticed that in my personal sims game I do have sims of many different body shapes, races and orientations. I like to let them generate pretty much as they are in game and alter them very little. This is because I find this to be more realistic. In real life there are people of all shapes, sizes, races, orientations etcetera. There is beauty in this variety..in every person and so I find beauty in every one of my little simmies that generates. We are shown quote on quote ideals every day and we may feel somehow inadequate if we don't look in the mirror and see what we think is ideal. Keep in mind that this is our OWN judgement of ourselves. While I know that in some cases we really are being ridiculed or bullied by peers keep in mind that this is a generally human experience. You would be hard pressed to find someone who has NEVER felt bullied or put down at some point in their lives by some person. The problem in those cases lies with the person(s) doing the bullying, not the target of their attacks. I don't want to digress too much though and that is an entire other subject I could delve deeply into. We cannot possibly know what everyone else sees when they look at us. The inner voice we all have that tells us we're not good enough or attractive enough is just that. It's an inner voice, our innate ability to criticize ourselves and we often project that feeling onto those around us as a defense. This pertains directly to eating disorders because they are not really about eating, but about control. The battle within ourselves to control the one aspect of an unpredictable life. They are also about fear. Fear of judgement, of ridicule and again this fear is largely spurred on within our own minds. I speak from experience. Not my own, but that of a close friend and from a professional standpoint as well.
When I was in high school one of my friends had self esteem issues pertaining to her weight. She was not excessively overweight, but, ultra thin with large breasts was the thing and she felt she could never live up to that. It was imperceptible to the rest of us at first. We were all still growing and so when she started to lose a little weight it didn't warrant much investigation. Soon there were rumors of her going to the bathroom after every meal and then she began to play with her food at lunch more than eat it, or she wouldn't eat at all or sometimes only drink an instant meal. She got waaaay into working out and began to constantly count calories and take diet pills. The weight loss then spiraled out of control. From the outside, we her friends, saw the dark circles under her eyes (from anemia and exhaustion), the pale and dry skin, the brittle hair that then began to fall out to the point she was put on Rogaine at the age of 15. When we asked her about it she would just deny it and we felt as if we couldn't do anything but sit by and watch her as she turned into a walking skeleton in front of us. She lost all of her curves and her skin hung in places. Her calf was the size of a forearm. You see, when the body is starving the first thing it eats for survival is muscle. It saves its fat reserves for real crisis mode. And so as she fell below 80 pounds and at this point was missing school often because she was so sick, her family was finally able to get her help. She survived and recovered and she was lucky. It is hard for us to understand the kind of dark places our minds can go, but that is the root of the problem. When a person is battling an eating disorder they have an altered state of perception. Their inner self doubt has taken control of them and as much as they feel they are in control because they are restricting the food their body gets..it's the exact opposite. They are not in control..that inner demon is. My friend has continued to live a healthy life and is actually a medical doctor today and I am so thankful that she was able to make it.
As I stated earlier, unfortunately this was not the only time I have witnessed the destruction eating disorders cause. I myself worked in healthcare until last year. I have seen many patients who suffer from eating disorders and the destruction it does to their physical, mental, emotional and dental health. Nutrition and eating disorders were subjects in the course that I taught and I have even seen student's of my own who were struggling with eating disorders. There is a strange juxtaposition in our society where these types of disorders are somewhat glorified and stigmatized at the same time and that is not helpful to anyone. I write this post not to pass judgement or to bring anyone down, but to bring awareness. Anyone can be suffering from these torturous disorders. It is not a cry for attention, but it is a cry for help. If you know anyone who is suffering, try to be there for them and try to help them find professional help. If you are suffering, don't be afraid to ask for help and remember YOU are unique. Don’t compare yourself to others and try to emulate others to be beautiful. You already are. Search for the beauty in being you. These conditions are very serious and can quite easily become a matter of life and death. Healthcare professionals are there to help you..that's literally their job..to help you get and stay healthy. Take care of yourself and others and remember to be kind.

UKAD supplied no aid to Webster, although its very own expert suggested that contamination may have been a concern. Webster was forced to spend his life savings in attempting to uncover the resource of the ostarine, and was approved with the complete 4 year ban for not instantly confessing an ADRV he suggested was not his fault. It would certainly show up that Jimmy has actually been fortunate that USADA was prepared to go above and beyond, and resource its own bathtub in order to sustain his assertion that the supplement concerned included ostarine. Not all anti-doping organisations have taken the exact same technique. British weightlifter Sonny Webster, who competed at the Rio 2016 Olympics, was approved with a four year ban by UK Anti-Doping in December in 2015.

What's more, SARMS are consisted of on the World Anti-Doping Agency's Prohibited List as materials that are forbidden at all times, rather than simply in-competition. Nevertheless, this does not always suggest that they are totally risk-free to utilize - as well as doesn't mean that their validity might not be challenged in the future. On on-line forums, customers report strength gains, however they also often consult concerning concerns such as high blood pressure, skin rashes as well as erectile dysfunction. Troubles with eye-sight appear to be especially usual; andarine is reported to provide customers' vision an environment-friendly or yellow tinge. In you can find more information on peptides uk's Australia bpc157 how does it work here. , it is always crucial to keep as much muscular tissue mass as possible during the procedure. The most effective sarms stack combination for cutting would certainly be ostarine (mk-2866), andarine, as well as cardarine (gw ). Rad 140, ligandrol, yk-11, as well as mk-677 are great sarms to pile for bulking, specifically if you're trying to acquire toughness, too.
Negative Effects Of Sarms.
That most preferred stack makes up cadarine, ostarine and also andarine. If you are a newbie or someone who is just getting going with utilizing sarms, then this is mosting likely to be the stack for you. The typical muscular tissue gains for this pile are around 7 to 10 lbs over an 8-week period. Twp 4way represents the supreme done in one sarm stack in a solitary product.
It is extremely advised that drugs like Clomid as well as Tamoxifen are completely understood before taking into consideration. OTC PCT are likewise readily available as well as are much stronger as well as efficient than the older generation used to be. Sadly, the average differs so much with S23 it is hard to give any type of good indicator without a lot of presumptions.
Blood Sugar Level Arrays.
As an enlightened assumption, it most likely would run out somebody's system within 12-weeks and also after a detox. Compared to tablet or capsule steroids SARMs are not methylated and consequently, not toxic to the liver. SARMs adverse effects can differ for each and every type of SARM and is commonly dosage reliant, implying the higher the dose the higher the risk of negative effects taking place.

Differences in ligand-specific receptor conformation and also protein-- protein interactions can result in tissue-specific genetics policy, because of possible adjustments in communications with ARE, coregulators or transcription elements. I made use of one more provider for caps previously however this fluid product is by far remarkable IMHO. SARMs are excellent for individuals that would like to preserve muscular tissues whilst on a cut.

Nevertheless, it's the dose of each careful androgen receptor modulator that matters most, together with the details chemicals used to create it. Sarms are similar to steroids, yet they are not one as well as the same. Both work by binding to your androgen receptors, setting off changes in your dna which boost your muscular tissues' capacity to expand. While sarms do possess anabolic properties, these compounds are ruled out anabolic steroids. In fact, the many benefits of sarms are because of that that sarms are not in fact anabolic steroids.
Later on in the short article we will damage down the prospective side effects for each SARM. Body building Forums can likewise be a wonderful place for some great details; nonetheless, they can also be a terrible location for some amusing fiction based off a reputable research study (A.K.A broscience). Numerous thousands of users across the world record results with marginal or no side effects from several different SARMs. However a smaller sized minority of users have actually experienced some negative effects which vary from person to person as everyone is various. Because of this SARMs may be very efficient for muscle losing conditions such as weakening of bones, AIDS and also cancer cells related losing. peptides-uk information BPC157 Switzerland free trial might additionally end up being a reliable oral male contraceptive treatment. Products and supplements available by Killer Nutrition Online Limited are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any illness or significant disease.
Specifically throughout a caloric deficit, these two sarms can help you keep your muscle mass. Hey there everyone, i feel like i obtained ripped on a sarms three-way stack. I acquired cardarine gw by armed sporting activities nutrition, ostarine by bio nutrition and also s-4 andarine presently on week 5 and do not really feel spunk. Andarine is frequently stacked with lgd-4033, rad-140, sr-9009, yk-11, mk-677 for extra noticable muscle development and also boosted operating. Such stacks permit us to get impressive quantities of lean muscular tissues in a brief period, along with to obtain more muscle mass definiti. With numerous published human trials under its belt, rad-140 is just one of the best-studied sarms. While discussing reducing and bulking, sarms triple stack acquires a stand place that produces anticipated results in an efficient way.
Imuscle Sarms Uk Reviews.
Nevertheless, in the In-Vitro researches YK-11 did bind as well as activate to the AR but was only found to be a partial agonist of the AR. YK-11 did reveal to boost the release of follistatin, which is a crucial protein for muscle mass development as it strongly antagonized myostatin.
The fascination for sarms comes from the theory that they can create results the same to anabolic steroids without the adverse effects. Well, as strange as it appears, a minimum of, part of that holds true. Yet, they show a strong fondness for androgen receptors in bone as well as muscle cells only. This is not the very first time the usa has actually been pushed better to banning sarms. If you're familiar, the sarms manage act made it's method with congress starting as early as 2018. Sarms are similar to steroids in numerous means, so they share a number of the very same adverse effects.
This can or else prove to be quite difficult as it calls for staying clear of squandering muscle. Your PCT can be the difference in between having negative effects and also not. SERMS or Discerning Estrogen Receptor modulators are one of the most widely known unlawful PCT medications due their performance but likewise, sadly, a few of the adverse effects that come with them.
Acquire steroids, peptides and also pct from ausroids welcome to ausroids, your ideal online source for getting anabolic steroids, peptides, and also post-cycle treatment supplements in australia. Sarms are selective androgen receptor modulators which is presently thought about more secure as well as much less hazardous than anabolic steroids. Type sensible, sarms fall into 2 primary classifications, one that is steroidal and the 2nd one is non-steroidals. Steroidal sarms were found about 70 years ago with no usage for human problems except those with dire demands.
What does LGD 4033 do?
LGD-4033 is a novel nonsteroidal, oral SARM that binds to androgen receptor with high affinity (Ki of ∼1 nM) and selectivity. In animal models, LGD-4033 has demonstrated anabolic activity in the muscle, anti-resorptive and anabolic activity in bone, and robust selectivity for muscle versus prostate.
Negative effects of RAD-140 are mostly unidentified due the absence of human tests and was only initial explained in 2010 by Miller et alia, created by Distance Health. It is widely approved that adverse effects are likewise dose reliant. First of all, Cadarine is not a Careful Androgen Receptor Modulator however instead is a Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Delta receptor agonist. It is commonly classified or grouped with SARMs from a sales and also advertising and marketing viewpoint. The receptor plays an important role in human metabolic rate and aids regulated genetics that help manage the transport and also oxidation of fats.
Some sarms such as cardarine and also sr9009 are best for cutting, and other sarms such as ostarine and also s4 are versatile, as well as can be used to either burn fat or develop muscle. The beauty of this stack and sarms as a whole is their convenience in just how they can be used to accommodate various desires and goals. I am a solid proponent with the use of the three-way stack due to the fact that it permits an individual to add quality and clean amounts of lean muscle while still being to able to go down body fat. The greatest done in one sarm pile of mk677, mk2866, cardarine & lgd. This stack is excellent for a person who wishes to obtain lean and much more muscular without the healing issues of utilizing hormonal agents.
Drug testing for SARMs is currently typical technique in sports however was unqualified as late as 2016. Ostarine has a half-life of 24-hour or 23.8 hours to be exact nonetheless no study can be found that definitively shows the discovery time.
Ostarine is classed as an anabolic representative by the World Anti-Doping Company, which reported a low 28 unfavorable logical searchings for across sporting activity in its 2016 Screening Numbers Report.
It assists body builders and other athletes make faster gains from their training, with its cutting and also bulking results.
It is a Discerning Androgen Receptor Modulator created as Enobosarm by pharmaceutical business GTX to deal with conditions involving muscle mass wastefulness or osteoporosis.
It additionally increases your stamina as well as muscular tissue mass, increases bone density as well as assists speed the recovery process after intense strength training.
SARMs, or discerning androgen receptor modulators, are medicines that affect muscle development, typically used in the muscle building area.
Piling develops a synergistic method to raising lean muscle mass whilst decreasing body fat.
Wallhead is a UFC competitor, so is regulated by USADA, despite being based in the UK ... Regrettably, none of this aids Jimmy Wallhead, who was blindsided through use of a supplement that really did not checklist ostarine as an active ingredient on the label. Wallhead has actually been authorized to the UFC, which is not a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code, for concerning 18 months. USADA agreed to run the UFC's anti-doping programme on 1 July 2015, an agreement that was applauded by WADA. Unless you are a chemist or an anti-doping official, the possibilities are that you will not have actually become aware of ostarine. Neither had Jimmy Wallhead, a Ultimate Battling Champion boxer based in Loughborough, UK. Yet he was sanctioned with a 9 month ban after a supplement he had actually utilized was located to consist of the substance. The mechanistic basis of the cells careful actions of SARMs is poorly understood, although a number of systems have been recommended.
4way consists of ostarine, mk-677, ligandrol and cardarine in one item - so you can expect magnificent cause a short timescale, while likewise conserving cash compared to purchasing them individually As well as I VERY SUGGEST THEM, 4 way sarm stack. Discerning androgen receptor modulators are made use of by bodybuilders and powerlifters to maximise fat loss, boost muscular tissue mass, as well as improve body toughness. They are additionally made use of to refurbish injuries, boost muscular tissue as well as bone toughness, and also improve the sense of well-being. Some body builders additionally use SARMs in between anabolic steroid cycles, prohormone cycles, and testosterone cycle for post cycle treatment or as more secure choices to these compounds. Unlike anabolic steroids, which bind to androgen receptors in many tissues throughout the body, private sarms selectively bind androgen receptors in certain cells, but not in others. Discerning androgen receptor modulators-- or sarms for short-- are a relatively brand-new group of medications that have the ability to give every one of the benefits of anabolic steroids without many of the adverse effects.
There is no requirement for healing supplements when using these 2 sarms given that they do not act upon the body the same way hormonal agents would certainly. Despite it being a rather mild sarm, it's in fact truly solid. You will see a great deal of researchers pile andarine with ostarine to produce a synergic impact.
It deserves keeping in mind at a PCT is probably required due to its capacity to lower FSH, LH and Testosterone levels. When S23 was provided to male rats it led to a 100% infertility rate. But the majority of interestingly sperm count went back to normal after ending up S23, as well as rats resumed mating at 100% maternity prices. However, too much S23 created sperm matters to turn around the first result and also supported sperm manufacturing. Because of this we are unable to categorise its impacts and also potential outcomes. YK-11 to start with is not a SARM, take a look at our post on YK-11 for an extra detailed testimonial. YK-11 was regretfully mislabeled as a SARM when as a matter of fact it is a new artificial steroid that has just had actually In-Vitro research studies done on it.

MTC/Fling Posse/MTR: weight troubles
Anon asked: Hi! I would love to say that I really love your writing your so amazing AHH! Can I request MTC/Fling posse/Matenrou with a S/O who is fat/chubby and is very insecure about it and is desperately trying to lose weight but it doesn't work out?
Sure!!!
Samatoki
He would tell you there’s no way you’re not perfect
But that what truly matters is that you’re being active and that you’re putting an effort towards health
And he supports you wether you wanna lose it or not, but really what he loves is that you’re doing your best
If you workout, he will workout with you, but rest assured he will support you either way
He sometimes asks if you want to workout with him, or he usually invites you and he helps you train your body not just to lose weight, but he stronger because that’s important because just looking thin won’t do you any good
And like he’ll motivate you in such a Samatoki way, like teasing and all, but never about your body because he would never want you to feel like absolute shit about yourself or care about what other people think
Jyuto
At first he wouldn’t know what to say because I feel like he’s such a fitness addict and all
But then, he also does bad things to his body, and sometimes he doesn’t care, but as someone who has a long and lean body, he’s kind of lost
But he loves you the way you are, and that’s what matters to him
He just wants you to be happy with how you look because you shouldn’t feel down or terrible
He praises your body when you feel bad, but he helps you if you want to change it
He motivates you and makes you workout if you swore to a routine
And whenever you feel like giving up, he’s there to tease you just enough to get you moving
Riou
This is a personal fitness coach
He asks what your goal is, but assured you that there’s nothing wrong with the way you look
But if you wanna change it, then he’s all for it and creates a plan that definitely has you losing weight
Though he’s not above cheat days and allows you to take his plan at your own pace, unless you have a set goal
And he’s a really good motivator because he knows what he’s doing and all that
And another thing is like, he genuinely enjoys it because he loves physical activity, so it’s an excuse to spend time with you
And he will help you reach your goal properly, with the right food (albeit a little weird but fits your macros), right exercise and right everything
Also he loves you, so that helps a lot
Ramuda
Honestly he would be like: but nothings wrong with you! I like how soft you are
And he says nothing is wrong with you fuck all those other people
But if you’re really adamant about changing how you look, Ramuda motivates you, even if he’s not that much into physical activity
Yes he will indulge your cheat days, but when he says when you shouldn’t
And he appreciates you as you are, but if you really want to lose weight, he would find a fitness instructor for you and cheer you on from the side because he doesn’t want to do it anyway
But his cheering is pretty extra, so it motivates you a lot
And he won’t let you forget your commitments, even if he is a little childish while doing so, he goes for it really
Gentaro
I don’t think he enjoys physical activity either, so he assures you that nothing is wrong with you and there’s no need to be insecure because there’s more to you than just physical attributes
But if you really do want to lose it, he helps you, provides you do it properly
No to crash dieting, so he researches on what to do and acts as an amateur fitness coach and has a journal on what you should do
Supports you logging in your progress and he writes little motivational messages to help you through the day, may it be because of your insecurity or because you have a goal to reach
Overall he’s a gentle supportive type, and he wouldn’t lie to you about how perfect you already are
Dice
He would support you and would be curious why nothing is working
Though he asks what you want, and all you want is to be happy but healthy
So dice says that thin isn’t always healthy, and he would know because he encountered so many homeless people who are like that
So he helps you and does his best to workout with you and all that
He goes to Riou and Gentaro for help with your diet plans and exercises
Riou drags him in for the exercises so he does it with you
And together you have an entire fitness plan and encourage each other
Overall, he’s pretty proud of you and he’s improving with you so that’s what’s important
Jakurai
He finds the flaws in your plan and fixes it because he’s a doctor that way
He also explains to you what you’re doing wrong
But he tells you that it’s up to you how you want to look like, but assures you that you’re beautiful
Though when you ask for his professional opinion, he says that yes it would be medically advisable to lose weight to reduce the chance of having certain illnesses and all that
So he asks for your goal and helps you make a plan for it
And then he trains you personally because since he was an assassin, he knows all of the workouts and the food that has to be consumed
As a doctor, he also knows what he’s doing and how the human body would react to different amounts of a certain polysaccharide
And he does the exercises with you and he teaches them to you patiently and calmly because he cares for you
And whenever you feel like giving up, Jakurai is always there to support you and make you smile through the difficulty
Doppo
He would be kind of lost with what to do honestly
So he asks jakurai for help and the doctor happily obliges
Doppo tells you though that he’s sorry you feel that way and he would commit himself to making you ele better and support you with your weight loss goals
But he makes you swear not to starve yourself because he’s done that and nothing good really comes out of it
Anyway, when jakurai makes a plan for you, Doppo helps you follow it in that really nervous cute way he can
And he asks if you’re okay or if you want to rest for a while, but is proud when you power through
Doppo tries to get in on it too and does it with you so you don’t feel that lonely
Hifumi
Oh he would be up for it and would motivate you to the bone
But promises that however you look, you would always be the most attractive person ever to him
Anyway, he would try out a variety of diets with you and he would workout with you because he has to maintain his body since he’s a host
And plus the fact that he’s just genuinely really physically active, so he would go all out all the time
But if you’re tired, he would let you rest
When you feel like giving up, he would motivate you and cheer you on
He’s a big puppy, so when you’re running it’s like running with your dog
No not a joke
But in general, he makes it fun for you and together you become healthier while enjoying time with each other, plus it all works out since his job is at night and he exercises regularly (probably) anyway

healthy tips for strong hairs
Here are some tips to keep your hair healthy and tidy. While hair maintenance is not difficult, sometimes we do things with our hair that cause them damage rather than care, and we do not know for sure. Here are some ways to prevent these damages. Hair protection
Healthy hair Care for hair with a few tips Coarse rubber The best plastic hair extensions are the ones that are coated with fabric. Rubber cushions can break your hair. It is best to use a variety of clips or pins to close your hair and pull it out of your face. Hair extensions generally damage and break the hair. The hottest hair dryer Excessive heat causes the hair to dehydrate and dry out, and the hair looks very rough and burnt. Use as little heat as possible with the dryer. But how do you know the temperature of the hair dryer is high? Set the hair dryer on medium. Hold your back against the wind. If the skin of your hand does not hurt, its degree is appropriate. The constant, hot heat destroys your hair. Also, do not dry it when the hair is completely wet and moist. Dry it with a towel until it is just salt, then brush with medium grade. Haircut Late The hairs become blurry shortly afterwards. This thickening makes the hair thinner and thinner. So, in order to have healthy and beautiful hair, trim about 1.5 cm of hair tip every month. If you want to get your hair done, do it every two months. Dead hair has no effect on the length of your hair. So it is best to cut them to prevent hair growth. Rough handling wet hair Hair is much easier to damage when wet. So if you comb it with a comb or a brush with a small tooth, you can damage it. To do this, it is best to do this with a coarse tooth when the hair is wet. The same applies to towels. Do not grip your hair too harshly. Do this with a soft towel. Comb from root to bottom If you comb your hair from root to hair from the beginning, you can damage and cut it. To prevent this, divide your hair into several categories. Grab the top of your hair with your hand and comb your hair from the bottom to the bottom, then raise your hand slightly and comb again and repeat until the root. This way, the lower knots of the hair will open better, not combing your hair from the top down once. Coating hair with a variety of restorative products The last thing to pay attention to is maintaining hair fat. Covering your head with a variety of restorative and reinforcing products will not leave you breathless for your hair and may not be well absorbed by the strengthening serums. To use, for example, hair shimmering serum, first apply on the palm of your hand, rub the hands together and then pull on the hair so that there is not a large volume of hair. Overuse of chemicals The types of chemicals on the market are harmful to the human body and hair, and the same applies to chemicals on the hair. Over-dyeing, keratinizing and smoothing the hair can damage and break the hair. Try to minimize the use of chemicals as much as possible. In addition, always treat your hair with a strengthening agent before dyeing, keratinizing or straightening your hair to minimize damage. Perfect shampoo for hair Most people think they should always use a shampoo for their hair. But that's not true. Every time you make a change to your hair, such as décolletage, highlight or dye, you should make and use the right shampoo for that hair.

I’m disappointed you reblogged that post about diets. OP is right about FAD DIETS making you lose weight only to gain it back, but long term weight-loss is a lifestyle change and 100% achievable. I know this is what the post means, but not how people interpret it. The post isn’t very clear. Hence, it is spreading a bad message and keeping people sick.
I’m sorry to hear that you’re disappointed in me–but you’re about to be even more disappointed. First off, I’ve written about fat shaming and diet culture pretty extensively. Check it out here and here and here. I’ve also posted lots of articles and research and such and such. But the post you’re referring to is absolutely not just about ‘fad diets,’ it’s about any diet where the focus is on weight loss. And this very much includes so-called ‘lifestyle changes.’ The research indicates that long-term maintenance of weight loss does not work. The post is very clear about that.
The reason that this is discouraging to so many people is precisely because as a culture we have come to conflate weight with both healthiness and attractiveness. We have, in other words, come to see the number on the scale as a relevant indicator of how beautiful and how healthy someone is. And reading the comments on that previous post, and the messages I receive every time I post something about fat acceptance, really drives this conflation home. Reading those comments hurts my heart, much more than being fat ever has.
Here’s the thing: being fat does not necessitate that someone is unhealthy. Fat people can be healthy. And once we accept this, once we truly come to terms with the fact that we can be both fat and healthy, then the research isn’t nearly as discouraging. Yes, the research says that fat people will generally remain fat. What it very much does not say is that fat people must generally be unhealthy. The research isn’t saying that we can’t make more mindful nutrition choices or increase the amount of physical activity we get. What it indicates is that insofar as those choices are made with the explicit goal of losing weight and keeping it off, then statistically speaking we are bound to fail. This shouldn’t matter though. The reason people are so invested in toxic diet culture is because we have tied our self-worth to our physical appearance. We are force-fed messages on the daily that if we are fat then we are ugly, we are failures, we are not living up to our full potential.
I’ve grappled with this my whole life. I don’t know how many fucking times I’ve had someone tell me that I need to unlock my inner skinny self, that when I look in the mirror I should imagine the person I want to be, that I’m a work in progress. This means that fat people are too often prevented from ever being content with who they are, for no other reason outside of our superficial appearance (even though it’s often cloaked in paternalistic drivel like ‘we just want you to be healthy,’ as if an eating disorder is healthier than belly rolls). John Steinbeck is sometimes quoted as saying ‘Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.’ Fat people are, similarly, told to think of ourselves as ‘temporarily embarrassed skinny people.’ Hey, I’m all for self-improvement. I think we should all strive to cultivate virtues and fight to be better in a variety of ways. But this is tricky territory, as improvement is not easy or direct. The humanist psychologist Carl Rogers captures this perfectly when he wrote that ‘The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.’ But acceptance and growth does not come through shame and humiliation and self-disgust and culturally-ordained patronizing, gaslighting paternalism.
I don’t want to make it sound like this is a simplistic issue with easy answers. Nutrition science is notoriously shaky and immature. There’s a lot of complexity here. As Roxane Gay points out in this fantastic podcast, reflexive body positivity isn’t helpful for everyone in every situation, specifically for people weighing in on most extreme ends of the bell curve. These issues can’t be elucidated through sound bites, and they especially can’t be elucidated through motivated thinking and prejudices. But the science is pretty darn clear right now regarding diet culture. It doesn’t work. It harms people. So what do we do with this? Do we just stubbornly plow forward? Do we let our dissonance get the better of us and defensively cling to our prejudices, insist that our individual intuitions are more relevant and reliable than decades of research?
The onus falls on us as a culture to reevaluate our conceptions of health and beauty. Fat identity is a marginalized issue even within social justice circles. The fact remains, however, that fat people are stereotyped, stigmatized, shamed, condescended, and generally mistreated for all the wrong reasons. Covering our ears and eyes to the research and our humanity won’t do anyone any favors.

Why do we feel the need to do updates when we haven't been on an app for damn near a year? Anyway-
Doing better health-wise. Lungs aren't falling apart so much anymore, I'm coughing up much less gunk and I can breathe better again. I'm going to take this opportunity to try and not be so doom minded anymore. I figure as corny and cliché as it is to be so happy in the face of a much shorter life expectancy, I may as well try to make something of it for others before I die.
I think that's what most people fear when they really think and realize it too. It could be dying alone, or in front of their lover, or without ever getting to say their proper goodbyes to their lover. However all of that is rooted so deeply in the memories that those two have created with each other.
Getting tangential, I'll bring it back around. I've just got some things I need to write out of my head.
I lost the girl of my childhood's adoration recently to very selfish and self-centered desires and idealogies on her behalf. I decided to let her take reigns if her own decisions and she decided I didn't to be a part of her life to be fulfilled or happy as a person. I felt entirely abandoned and dropped off yet; From the very first moment we met on the swingset at Knox Elementary School in Chandler, Arizona I knew I wanted to be with her and make a life with her and maybe even a kid or two after we got the fuck out of the desert we were in and maybe even get our own house with a bunch of animals and a pool and all the cheesy shit that makes a lump form in your throat and cry when you say it out loud, fuck me dude.
I really thought through all of the California shit we could finally grow old and grey together and for the past 3 years we fucking were dude. We ran through the the streets at night together, ran our fingers through each others hair, held each other and felt each other in such sensual, non-sexual ways, we learned each others minds and bodies, we learned each others inner thoughts about the world around us. We went out to the desert where the surface streets ended and just stared up at the night sky in each others presence. We literally owned the night and no one had more fun with each other than we did, fight me over it. We laughed and cried together, watched our friends leave us and find others together, watched fires and floods together, been on top of and beside each other, rolled on the floor like we were ferrets together. Made love and didnt just fuck each other, unless we both knew we wanted it. And when we did, we knew the difference between the physical and mental meshing and bonding of a body and spirit, and pure primal and corporeal pleasure. We knew each others flaws and utmost weaknesses and we never went at them just to feel dominant to the other. We just, lived and loved together.
But now that's all gone. Has been for almost two months now.
Now I don't know if I should take the chance on my love life anymore. Not so much out of cowardice and the fear of being hurt. Neither of those feelings exist within what I recognize to be the core of my being anymore. She took those with her when she left. In many ways you could say she's made me more immune to feeling things than I ever was before we got together.
Which in itself is an oxymoron but like... What else is there to say to describe when you were born into this world with an innate sense of ambivalence towards others and literally only two people have ever stuck out among the hundreds you've come into pass with? With outstanding exception none the less.
I can say shamelessly that I've been with someone just for the sexual gratification of feeling desired by another but only because it was with just that one. And God damn did I learn my lesson with being with someone without feeling for them. Her name was Ariela and I was literally a God to her. She was submissive to a fault. Not to mention very co-dependant on penis being in her to have any sense of self value or worth. I did everything in my power at the time to help her mentally and help her become better as a person morally and value-wise. She didn't want it. She wanted to be the center of pity and negative attention at every chance so she could feel justified in snapping back at the slightest resistance to anything she held valuable. She drained me of too many necessary emotions that I needed to have about me to function as a young man and it absolutely had a hand in pulling me away from my friends in California.
And yet as sad and regressive as it is. I don't know if I can properly explain it, but I do still have love to spare within me for another. Im more than willing to create memories with this outstanding individual. She probably knows it but is significantly more than likely no longer interested in a future with me if ever at all to begin with. And I know this. And I don't have any say in changing that because if I'm being honest with myself she's literally the closest thing to a perfect human being in terms of intelligence, awareness and compassion for other outstanding humans that I have ever been graced with a "Hey" by; And I'm literally just a plain-faced caveman in comparison. And like, that's life. I fucked up on my end more than enough times than she should ever have to put up with from a friend.
All of that said, we never communicated properly what was in our heads about how we felt specifically about each other. We both were afraid of certain aspects of changing a friendship and out of that fear we- well, I cant speak for her but I- know that I decided to be passive and on the sidelines when I should've been more, well less of a bitchy and emotionally needy teenager about everything. Not so much making any moves in terms of making myself stand out amongst a literal crowd of others that were vying for her genuine attention. But out of all that I learned that I needed to be more of a man amidst the boys I was also around.
The adults in my life have always pointed out that I'm more mature than others in my generation, yet when it came time to BE the more mature amongst the others in my generation I failed. Failed hard. Failed so hard I doubled down on the bitchy and emotional-ness and more or less let those particular people in California try to live their lives like I'd never been in them, just as they were before I moved to California.
And I think it was then and there that I realized it. The being remembered thing.
I've had friends, and friends of friends, and "best" friends all come on to me, sexually. As in the dance with no pants variety of coming on to me. And I shut them down, dead in their fat assed, busty tracks. Because for one, I didnt want the sex. I wanted the connection, affection and attention. And two, the feelings for my childhood love and at-the-time crush (God I hate and love that word, it really truly does only work for highschool sweethearts doesn't it?). And all of those particular people were able to pass me up and drop me after the sex was denied. They didn't want to remember me, they wanted to remember the novelty of the orgasms and fleshly pleasure I gave them in the taboo of the social circles we were in. One in particular I knew just wanted to fuck me to piss off another, and that stuck out in my mind.
My point being! Those people haven't talked to me since I moved and those people didnt talk to me when I was there. They lacked a fear of not being remembered that I think the two mentioned far above did. I know that for a fact about Desiree. But I could be entirely wrong about the California girl in every which way, but ya know what dude? When you sit and watch sunsets with a guy every day for almost 3 weeks in a row and most of that time is spent talking about each others day, what's going on in our lives and awkward arm-over-the-shoulder cuddling; Spend a large number of nights watching anime and poking each other, spending many an overnights conversation with each other in person and over the phone. It's kind of bass ackwards to say there wasn't a flicker of something going on there.
And for me, those two are always going to be quite literally burned into my memory above others. Not all of them, more like aside from them. Congruent if you will. Because we made unintentionally or otherwise, very potent memories. On my end they did at least. See that there? That's what the purest and most potent form of fear inside an eternally broken man's heart looks like on paper. Well, screen.
Uncertainty.
Indiscernability of the soul.
Not really knowing. Anymore or to begin with.
These things literally kill us every day. Inside and out. Not risking the pain, not seeking the truth. Being afraid of losing and tarnishing a connection with someone you say you can love shouldn't be allowed-
Is what I would've said had I never gotten to feel what I knew was true love with the love of my life. If I hadn't been given a genuine shot with an outstanding and beautiful in every aspect individual. If I hadn't been given the chance to fuck up, I wouldn't have been given the chance to feel. This is equivalent exchange at its finest and if I could tell you both face to face, our time with and around each other was not a faustian bargain. Because even if I didn't get the future I envisioned with one of you, and another any future at all. I still got memories that will never not be a part of me and if I can offer you two anything,
You wont be forgotten. You will be remembered. So no longer live your lives with the fear of not being. It's an enormous weight off of your conscience.

Content warning: Pro Anorexia, Pro Bulimia, Weight Loss, Eating Disorders, Thinspo
I wouldn’t normally post what someone sent us in a fanmail, but this made me angry enough that I feel it should be addressed here.
I’m sure this person was well-intentioned, but I need to discuss this with you all because there is something you really need to understand, something this person didn’t.
I am sick and tired of the way that, whenever we call out the hatefulness and dangerousness that is the pro-ana mentality, whenever we call out people who just happen to have anorexia for their fatphobia, whenever we call out rhetoric that pushes eating disorders onto others and tries to conflate restricted eating or starving with some kind of glamorous, healthy, wonderful weight loss diet that will make you oh so beautiful, etc., someone always has to scream at us for supposedly hating anorexic people or not understanding what anorexia is.
I’m fed up, honestly.
Recently, I made a post explaining that fitspo and pro-ana are connected, and that is why I don’t like fitspo. Fitspo isn’t about being healthy and fit; it’s about damaging your body and taking on dangerous exercise regimens while not nourishing your body or even starving yourself. And like pro-ana, fitspo pushes the idea that having body fat is a horrible, horrible thing, that it is shameful, that it is a failure on your part, etc., and that you should be willing to go to any length, to even die, to get rid of all your body fat. Which, for the record, is literally impossible, and this pursuit really can kill you.
And in the post, I said, “You can check our other posts on pro ana to fully understand the mindset behind these blogs and see what kinds of things they say and post.” And I said that because every single time we talk about pro ana, people don’t understand how it’s different from just being anorexic, take what we said as some kind of attack against or blanket statement about all anorexic people, and start massive fights and spread rumors about how much we “hate” people with eating disorders.
Which, by the way, anti fat acceptance people use against us to try to show people with eating disorders that fat people are their enemy (completely ignoring you can be fat with an eating disorder) and that they should become fatphobic and anti fat acceptance too. And it works. And for many people with eating disorders, that is extremely dangerous, because if you see fat people as a bad thing, you will see fatness as a bad thing, and then it only becomes harder to recover and to take care of your body because you become more and more desperate to not be fat.
Obviously, eating disorders aren’t always about not being fat- but it would be ignorant and false to say that that is never a factor, or that weight is never a massive concern for people with anorexia, bulimia, and the like.
So I wanted to make the point right away: if you don’t know what pro ana is, you can look it up on our blog and see it for yourself. That way, there should be very little misunderstandings here.
We have many posts about how people with anorexia are not the enemy, how people with anorexia deserve help, love, and support, etc., but how using anorexic people as a tool in your anti-fat rhetoric or promoting a pro-ana mentality is not okay. We have stated many times that we don’t have a problem with people with anorexia unless they treat us poorly for our weight- which, despite what you might want to believe, happens. We don’t treat them differently from anyone else in that sense.
We aren’t going to give someone a free pass on being hateful and fatphobic just because of a factor of their identity, and that shouldn’t be seen as unreasonable. It’s not that we are judging them for their mental illness; it’s that we are holding them accountable for how their behavior and words hurt other people. The same thing we do with anyone else of any size or mental health status or whatever else.
Hating pro ana is not about hating people with anorexia. It is about hating a specific mindset that tells people that starving is better than being fat.
I have literally seen the words “Better dead than fat” on these blogs. So this is not an exaggeration of what they are doing.
So, onto this fanmail that bothered me so much.
Hi. I read your recent post on fitspo/eating disorders, and I agree with almost everything. I hate pro-ana blogs with a burning passion, and have blocked a ton of related tags, including fitspo.
This is how the message started. And I want to believe the person meant it, that they understand how these blogs are hurtful and dangerous to a variety of people, that they get why we hate them so strongly. But I’m not convinced, and that’s because of what they said in the rest of their message.
I do want to say, though, that some of the language you used to describe anorexia felt… surprising. The stuff about “eagerly starv[ing]” and anorexia being about hating fat people it upset me a little
Except I never described anorexia in the post. I never talked about anorexia in general in the post. I talked only about pro ana blogs, about pro mia blogs, about fitspo blogs.
And pro ana blogs, pro mia blogs, and fitspo blogs often promote the hatred of fatness, of being fat, of looking fat, of fat people. We’ve talked about it before here, and if this person had actually gone through our other posts on the topic, they’d know what I mean. Many of these blogs hate reblog pictures of fat people to use them as examples of what “ugly” looks like and to motivate themselves not to be fat. They leave mean, horrid comments on these pictures. They describe fatness like it’s a moral failure. Again, they say it’s better to be dead than fat. They bully fat people, they say awful things about fat people, they attack others for not hating fat people... I mean, it’s impossible to deny that much of what they are doing is about their hatred of fatness and their fear and disgust of the idea of being fat themselves.
And they are proud of their starvation. They show it off like a badge of honor. They don’t feel like they are hurting themselves. They, in fact, brag about how much they are bettering themselves by losing weight. They flaunt it, and encourage others to starve themselves. They are always eager to learn new unhealthy quick methods of weight loss to combine with the starvation. They post selfies of their progress, partially to fish for compliments from others who share the same mindset, and partially in hopes of getting insulted to keep motivated to keep starving. That is pro ana! This is not anorexia in general!
And I know that, which is why the post was only about pro ana.
The whole point of the post was to answer a question we keep getting in our inbox: “How can you possibly hate fitspo/fitspiration?” And so I answered it, by first explaining pro ana and second by drawing the connection between the two.
The post was never talking about anorexia. Hell, some people who run pro ana blogs don’t even meet the medical requirements of anorexia or even atypical anorexia, because you don’t necessarily have to starve yourself in order to encourage others to starve themselves and say that being fat is the worst thing ever! So although uncommon, not all of these blogs are run by anorexic people! Many fitspo blogs, for example, are not!
Anyway, the fanmail went on from there to talk about the sender’s own anorexia... again, completely missing the part about how this isn’t about anorexia in general. And the best part was that they felt the need to “educate” me on how anorexia is often about control... something I already know, because every time people scream and insult us for “attacking” anorexic people, they feel the need to tell us this.
And never once did the sender consider that maybe we at this blog have more experience with eating disorders than they think. They spent the whole time “teaching” us about them, assuming none of us have ever struggled with one.
Sender, maybe you should check our “atypical anorexia” tag and see all the drama we have caused in the past by pointing out fat people with eating disorders exist- including fat people who restrict their eating or starve themselves. Why? Because you may find out that making assumptions about the mods is a shitty thing to do.
My eating disorder isn’t because I hate fat people. I’d wager that most eating disorders don’t stem from that, even if they look like it.
No one was talking about you, though, sender! If you are not a pro ana blog, our posts calling out pro ana are not about you!
And for the record, not everyone who hates fatness and fat people realizes they do! Fatphobia is one of those things that, like many other prejudices, you can have without even realizing!
Also, being fatphobic against yourself still counts as being fatphobic! And surprise, there are a lot of people out there who claim to never hate fat people but sure do hate themselves for being too fat or for being too much “like” a fat person (i.e. eating too much, not caring about their weight as much as they “should,” typical fat people stereotypes like that)! And that still hurts other fat people even if you don’t want to believe it!
Yeah, I know this person meant well, but I am angry. I am tired of having these conversations over and over again.
Pro-ana is disgusting and should be banned from Tumblr, but anorexic people, and people with other EDs, are human too, and we suffer in ways which are certainly not as superficial as they might seem at first glance.
Yes, I know this. Still doesn’t change that pro ana is fatphobic and dangerous and that I am allowed to call it out. Which is all I did. Seriously.
Please y’all, read our posts carefully before you “critique” them next time? And don’t make shitty assumptions about our mods or our opinions and viewpoints when you do?

How to Cure Migraines & Headaches Naturally: 7 Essentials
Are you looking for natural ways to cure migraines and headaches naturally? Tired of popping Tylenol or Advil? You are not alone. Headaches and migraines are among the most common neurological disorders worldwide, affecting approximately 50% of all adults every month, with prevalence among women more than twice as high as among men.
Here’s all you need to know about why headaches happen plus 7 essential steps to kick headaches to the curb and cure migraines.
Headaches 101
A headache is a “pain felt in the head, characterized by common characteristics including: throbbing, squeezing, constant, unrelenting, or intermittent.
Headaches are an inflammatory response in the body, most headaches happen in the nerves, blood vessels, and muscles that cover a person’s head and neck. There are many different ways to cure migraines and headaches.
Although it may seem like it, a headache is not actually a pain in your brain. Instead, the brain tells you when other parts of your body hurt or are inflamed; your brain doesn’t necessarily physically experience the pain itself (it just feels like).
Different Types of Headaches
There are more than 150 different types of headaches. Some of the most common types include:
Tension Headaches (episodic or chronic)
Mild to moderate pain and come and go over time and usually have no other symptoms.
Migraines
Often described as pounding, throbbing pain. Migraines can last from 4 hours to 3 days and usually happen one to four times per month and there are ways to cure migraines naturally. Along with the pain, people have other symptoms, such as sensitivity to light, noise, or smells; nausea or vomiting; loss of appetite; aura (seeing spots or a spinning room); and upset stomach or belly pain.
Cluster Headaches
Intense and feels like a burning or piercing pain behind or around one eye, either throbbing or constant. Called “cluster headaches” because they often occur in groups. You may get them one to three times per day during a cluster period, which may last 2 weeks to 3 months. Each headache attack last 15 mins to 3 hours and often wakens the patient from sleep.
The headaches may disappear completely (go into “remission”) for months or years, only to come back again. The pain can be so bad that most people with cluster headaches can’t sit still and will often pace during an attack. On the side of the pain, the eyelid droops, the eye reddens, pupil gets smaller or the eye tears. The nostril on that side runs or stuffs. It is very important to cure migraines and headaches to feel better.
Sinus Headaches
Deep and constant pain in your cheekbones, forehead, or bridge of your nose. Sinus headaches happen when cavities in your head (sinuses) get inflamed. The pain usually comes along with other sinus symptoms, such as a runny nose, feeling of fullness in the ears, fever, and swelling in your face. A true sinus headache is from a sinus infection so the nasal discharge is yellow or green, unlike the clear discharge in cluster or migraine.
Hormone Headaches
Women can get headaches from changing hormone levels during their periods, pregnancy, and menopause. The hormone changes from birth control pills also trigger headaches in some women. Fortunately, there are simple ways to cure migraines and headaches.
Exertion Headaches
Headaches brought on from the constriction of blood vessels in your body during exertion, such as intense exercise, heavy lifting or overtraining. Exercise induces a stress response, accompanied by a spike in blood glucose. (Fun fact: People with blood glucose of 70 have reported upwards of 140 after exercising while fasted). What this means for your head? Elevated glucose and/or stress, elevates cortisol, which also elevates inflammation.
Seasonal or “Allergy” Headaches
Inflammation in the brain and body brought on from a histamine (allergic or sensitivity) response to either allergens in the air or foods.
Oral or Dental Headaches
Connected to the dental work and oral health, such as tightening of braces, TMJ (lock jaw), or structural and chemical imbalances in the mouth (cavities, mercury fillings, need for a root canal).
Secondary Headaches
A secondary “side effect” due to trauma, infections, disorders, withdrawal from medications, drugs or alcohol, or structural imbalances in the body (such as spine, neck or other body parts connected to cranial nerves).
For instance: A food intolerance in your gut may trigger a histamine response that in turn feels like a headache in your head.
For others, sometimes people also get headaches when they are sick —such as a sinus headache when you get a cold, flu, or allergies (“pain” in the immune system).
Another example: Cortisol imbalances from stress (i.e. lack of sleep, overwork, overtraining, under-eating, inflammatory foods, etc.) can cause headaches, felt in your brain too–even though the pain is really somewhere else (your hormones).
And one more: People who drink a lot of caffeinated drinks might get caffeine-withdrawal headaches, and some headaches are the side effect of taking a particular medication–both signs of imbalance in the body and unwanted stress.
What Causes Headaches?
The pain you feel during a headache comes from a mix of signals between your brain, blood vessels, and nearby nerves. Specific nerves of the blood vessels and head muscles switch on and send pain signals to your brain. Good thing you can address this and cure migraines naturally.
Lots of different things can trigger headache signals, including:
Dehydration
Gut pathologies (SIBO, yeast, fungi)
HPA-Axis dysregulation (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal; chronic stress)
Hormone imbalances (PMS, menstruation, birth control)
Over-exertion/exercise
Low stomach acid
Thyroid dysfunction
Too much screen time (Circadian rhythm stress)
Macronutrient imbalance (Low protein intake, low quality fat intake, low carb intake)
Toxic chemical exposure (plastics, dryer sheets, toxic cleaning/beauty supplies)
Mold exposure
Dental fillings or dental work
TMJ (lock jaw)
Mercury overload/heavy metals
Food intolerances
Environmental/pet allergens
Poor immune function
Gluten & Conventional dairy
Low serotonin (90% is produced in the gut) and/or low dopamine
Liver/gallbladder pathology
Eating out a lot (poor quality oils, gluten, fillers)
Bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine
Long term medication use
Nootropic supplements or neurotransmitter supplement mis-use (5-HTP, Gaba, etc.)
Antibiotics
Nutrient deficiencies [particularly Magnesium, Zinc, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Fatty Acids, Coenzyme Q10 and B2 (riboflavin)]
High caffeine or sugar intake (and/or withdrawal)
High carbohydrate intake, or low carb diets without enough fat or poor fat absorption
Low protein diets
Structural imbalances (head, neck, spine)
One Root Cause
Although there are TONS of different triggers to headaches and the “mixed signals” in the brain and blood vessels, all headaches share one root cause: Inflammation, or stress, on your body. Not just mental stress, but physical stress too.
When your body experiences stress—be it stress on your immune system from allergens in the air, stress from a traumatic brain injury, or stress from hormone imbalance (like high cortisol)—your brain signals and neurotransmitters may send signals to your brain telling it, it’s under stress or “in pain.” You will need some remedies to cure migraines and headaches.
One of the top sources of this headache-causing stress? Your gut health.
Gut Health 101
Your gut is the gateway to your total body health and inflammatory processes.
In fact, you have more than 100 trillion gut bacteria throughout your body (not just located in your GI tract, but relocated to other places too, like your mouth, skin, heart and endocrine glands)—that is 10 times more gut bacteria than actual human cells.
Although the word “bacteria” may sound like a bad or dirty word, the vast majority of your gut bacteria are non-pathogenic (non-disease causing)—at least when your body is healthy.
Every person different types and amounts of gut bacteria, and those people with “healthier strains” of gut bacteria and a “wider, more diverse variety” of gut bacteria (not just the same strains) are generally healthier as a whole—metabolism, hormones, immune function, weight, energy and lower amounts of headaches.
What Do Gut Bacteria Do?!
The main role of your (healthy) gut bacteria is to keep all your body’s daily essential processes “healthy” and in running smoothly including:
Nutrient absorption (making the Vitamin C in your orange actually be used by your body)
Immune system function
Hormone balance
Maintaining a healthy weight and metabolism
Maintenance of your intestinal lining (preventing “leaky gut” and digestive wors)
“Feeding” ALL of your cells and neurotransmitters to function properly (including your brain health)
Fighting off inflammation and protection against “pathogens” (bad guys, toxins, pesticides, illnesses)
In short: gut bacteria play an important role not only in digestive health, but in wider aspects of health, including weight, metabolic health, hormone health, immune function and…fending off headaches. The role of gut bacteria in headaches, mental health and brain health is known as the “gut-brain” connection.
The Gut-Brain Connection
The gut is often referred to as the “second brain” in the scientific literature. Get these brain-gut connection facts:
You have more than 100 million neurons in your gut—cells and signals that talk directly to the brain.
More than 90% of your serotonin (your “feel good” brain chemicals) that calms inflammation in the body is produced in your gut.
More than 30 hormones that govern “homeostasis” and balance in your brain and body are produced in your gut.
In addition, more than 80% of your immune fighting cells (Th1, Th2, Beta Cells, Th17) are produced and housed in your gut (the immune fighting cells that fight inflammation in your body)
Your liver (your body’s #1 anti-inflammatory and cleansing organ) detoxifies unwanted toxins in your body and metabolizes hormones, like cortisol (stress hormones) and all of your neurotransmitters (including serotonin), signaling them to properly “work” in your body. However if your liver is sluggish, congested or overworked (from toxins, pesticides, non-organic foods, artificial sweeteners, longterm medication use, environmental stressors, etc.), then your brain (and body) suffers, since your hormone balance (cortisol levels) and brain chemicals are unable to function properly.
Your vagus nerve, the nerve that governs your digestive process and your brain frontal lobe (“clear thinking”) function is directly connected from the top of your stomach to the top of your brain.
The Bottom Line:
The “gut-brain” connection plays a BIG role in how your body experiences stress and inflammatory process experienced in your brain and body when headaches strike.
If your gut health is “out of whack” and you have lots of inflammation in your gut, guess where you may experience that inflammation? Your brain.
The Result?
Your neurons are unable to fire properly.
Your cortisol (inflammation fighting hormone) is in “stressed out mode.”
Also, your “feel good” anti-inflammatory brain chemicals are suppressed.
You get headaches.
How Does My Gut Get Unhealthy in the First Place?
Gut “problems” and bacterial imbalances don’t happen overnight, nor are they attributed to on thing. Instead a variety of stressors and triggers accumulate over time, causing a disruption in the balance of healthy gut bacteria, introducing more unhealthy or dysbiotic bacteria (overgrowth of certain strains), or spurring on a yeast overgrowth or pathogenic infection (like a parasite).
Common gut bacteria disruptors include:
Not chewing your food thoroughly
Being born as a C-section baby or formula fed (preventing the formation of early life healthy gut bacteria)
Low stomach acid or digestive enzymes
Nutrient deficiencies
Eating too fast or in a hurry (preventing proper food breakdown)
Lack of food diversity and variety
Low quality protein, low starchy tuber/prebiotic fiber and/or low healthy fatty acids in the diet
Eating gut-irritating ingredients and chemicals your body DOESN’T recognize as “food” or can’t easily digest (conventional meat with hormones and antibiotics, Quest Bars, Halo Top, Instant Oatmeal, sugary granola bars, Diet Coke, frozen dinners, hydrogenated oils)
Long-term use of medications or antibiotics
Environmental toxic exposures (hygiene, cleaning, beauty supplies)
Antibiotics
NSAIDS, birth control pills & other long term medication use
Low thyroid function
Mercury overload (fish, fillings, metals)
Mold exposure (house, environment)
Chronic stress (under-sleeping, overtraining, constant worry or anxiety, high alcohol or smoking exposure)
Food poisoning
Sedentary lifestyles or overtraining
Circadian rhythm disruption that throws off internal balance in your body (such as: “off” eating, sleeping or waking times; artificial light exposure at night)
Chronic infections (Lyme, Ebstein Barr, hepatitis)
Disordered eating habits (binging, purging, restriction, etc.)
History of Infections or Illness (bacterial, virus, heavy metals, fungal overgrowth)
Lack of fermented foods and fibers (probiotics and pre-biotics)
Other digestive problems, like SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), liver/gallbladder dysfunction, parasites, food intolerances, etc.
This list is not exhaustive, but as you can see, a variety of stressors on physical health can impact the health, variety and diversity of your gut bacteria.
Headaches, Gut Bacteria & Stress
While it may sound simplistic, a disruption of gut bacterial health in combination with stressors that influence your stress hormone balance (cortisol) provoke inflammation in the body.
If your gut health is disrupted or your body is overburdened by stress (physical and mental),
Your liver is unable to detoxify toxins and foods and metabolize hormones and neurotransmitters properly;
Your gut is unable to break down and digest “inflammatory” foods in your diet (like gluten, sugar or hormone, antibiotic-rich dairy);
And, your immune system is unable to fight off pathogens;
Inflammation overtakes your body as a whole
…Leading to headaches for those who are most susceptible to them.
Headache Treatment: Conventional Approach
Unfortunately, headaches (especially migraines) are hard to treat and very difficult to prevent with conventional approaches. There are many options when you are looking for ways to cure migraines.
The top go-to’s for headache treatments include NSAIDS (advil, tyelenol, ibuprofen), sometimes a recommendation for “more water,” and other prescription medications. These are popular to those who wish to cure migraines.
There are also a ton of preventive drugs prescribed to regular migraine sufferers— calcium channel blockers, beta-blockers, anti-seizure medications, antidepressants, and more –all of which work poorly (if at all), and they also come with a host of by side effects (including purposeful paralyzation of the neck muscles just to make the headaches stop!).
The problem with all these approaches is that we are simply seeking to treat (and mask) the symptoms, instead of first addressing the root cause of the headaches (to keep them from happening in the first place), leaving sufferers to “deal with headaches” (and pray they don’t happen) for most of their lives.
Headache Treatment: Functional Approach
The functional approach to headaches takes a different path—seeking to figure out the root cause(s) behind headaches, and addressing inflammation and total body wellness (as a whole) in order to not only curb headaches (in the moment), but also prevent them from happening in the first place.
7 Natural Hacks to Cure Migraines and Headaches
So how do you “heal” or cure migraines and headaches naturally?!
Boost your body systems that curb and fight inflammation—namely your gut health!
“Loving your gut,” along with the implementation of anti-inflammatory practices (through foods, lifestyle factors and smart supplementation) is the no-nonsense solution to kicking your headaches to the curb. This will be very helpful to cure migraines too.
Here are 7 do-now hacks:
1. Address Underlying Pathologies & Stressors
It’s crucial to figure out what triggers and stressor(s) are driving your headaches:
Are they “seasonal?” Food intolerances? Environmental related? Allergies? “That time of the month?” Medications? Caffeine? Diet?
Once you identify your trigger(s), then dig even deeper behind the trigger(s): “What is “pulling the trigger in the first place?”
For instance allergies are rooted in immune dysfunction (in your gut, where 80% of immune system cells are produced). High caffeine intake messes with both cortisol levels and sometimes gut bacteria. Medications thwart cortisol balance and affect liver function, causing inflammation in the body. You are always more susceptible to headaches if and when your gut health (including liver health) or HPA-Axis (hormone and cortisol balance) is off. This is a very important step to get the best remedies to cure migraines.
The top “underlying” stressors behind regular headaches, especially migraines include:
Gut Imbalances (Yeast, SIBO, infection, parasites)
Food Intolerance/Allergies (Especially gluten, corn, soy, sugar)
Chemical Triggers (nitrates in deli meats, sulfites in wine, pesticides in food—especially non-organic foods)
Heavy Metals (mercury in dental fillings, food exposure, steel braces and retainers)
Environmental Toxins (mold, chemicals in cleaning, beauty, chemical products)
Hormonal Imbalances (often from poor liver metabolism and clearance; or elevated cortisol—stress hormone)
Nutrient Deficiencies (especially Magnesium, Zinc & B-Vitamins—often from lack of them in the diet and poor gut health absorption)
Mitochondrial (cell function) Imbalances
If you get headaches frequently, consider partnering with a healthcare practitioner who digs deeper beyond symptoms to figure out root cause(s). A further customized treatment protocol and testing may be necessary, such as: Adrenal-hormone testing; stool analysis; SIBO breath testing; heavy metals testing; comprehensive functional blood chemistry.
2. Build a Healthy Gut Ecosystem
Your gut is the gateway to health. Heal the gut and practically every other body system “domino” often falls into place (headaches included). Our gut bacteria dictate the physiological processes inside our bodies, so if your gut bacteria are unhealthy or out of whack, then other systems and processes (ie. metabolism, hormones, detox pathways, elimination, nutrient uptake, cardiorespiratory, blood sugar, etc.) may get out of whack too. Build a healthy gut ecosystem with gut-loving supports–particularly for your liver-gallbladder processing (your body’s filtration and recycling system).
Some basic essentials include:
Daily soil-based probiotic and fermented foods (1-2 condiment servings: sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, fermented yogurt, kefir)
Prebiotic supplement and foods (starchy tubers, soluble fibers and root veggies)
Boosting stomach acid with apple cider vinegar shots and/or HCL tablets and digestive enzymes
Cooking your own food, more than eating out
Chewing your food really well and not eating in a hurry or on the go
3. Hydrate
Water is crucial for all life (to cure migraines and headache relief). A dehydration headache is a headache, caused by not having enough fluid in the body and inflammation mounting in the brain. The body requires the proper balance of fluid and electrolytes to function properly, and every day, the body loses water through daily activities, such as sweating and urination.
Typically, the amount of fluid lost is easily balanced through drinking or eating fluid-rich foods.
However, sometimes the body loses water faster than it can be replenished. When the body is dehydrated, the brain can temporarily contract or shrink from fluid loss. This causes the brain to pull away from the skull, causing pain and resulting in a dehydration headache. Once rehydrated, the brain plumps up and returns to its normal state, relieving the headache. The bottom line: Water does a body good. Aim to drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily.
4. Eat a Nutrient Dense Diet
When we eat, we not only feed ourselves, but we also feed our gut bugs. What are you feeding yours? More and more research shows that certain foods can trigger headaches more than others—particularly the highest inflammatory offenders, like gluten, conventional dairy, eggs, nuts,
Eat This:
organic, sustainable meats & poultry
wild-caught fish
fresh veggies and fruits
fermented foods (pickled veggies, sauerkraut, kefir)
starchy tubers & roots (sweet potatoes/potatoes, plantains, carrots, beets, squashes)
healthy plant and animal fats (coconut, avocado, olives, ghee, grass-fed butter, lard, tallow)
herbal tea
Bonus: magnesium-rich foods: dark leafy greens, avocado, bananas, raw soaked pumpkin seeds, soaked beans
Limit
eggs (especially egg whites)
nuts
alcohol (4-6 glasses per week)
coffee (more than 1 cup)
nightshades (chili powder, spices, vegetables)
legumes (unless you soak and dry to cook)
Dairy (fermented and grass-fed sources)
Pork (pastured, organic preferred)
Avoid
soy
sugar/artificial sweeteners
gluten
corn (including cornstarch in foods, high fructose corn syrup)
soy
conventional dairy & meats (hormones, antibiotics)
processed and refined foods
industrial seed oils (canola oil, grape-seed oil)
peanuts
grains
instant coffee
any other foods you are intolerant to (such as FODMAPS)
Try this approach for 30 days and see how you feel. This helps to cure migraines.
Take it to the Next Level: Consider a Low Histamine Diet
Histamine rich foods cause an “immune” response in the body that triggers inflammation—particularly headaches. If you’ve been eating the basic anti-inflammatory diet for more than 30-60 days, but still keep getting headaches, consider experimenting with a low-histamine diet for 30 days, and see how you feel. Note: A histamine intolerance is often a BIG sign that something in your gut is “off.” Many people find when they eat any histamine foods, some extra gut love during the day (digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acid tablets with meals, and an extra dose of prebiotics and probiotics), along with immune boosting support supplements (like D-Hist by Orthomolecular or Trizomal Glutathione and Tumero Active by Apex Energetics) can be “game changers” for digesting those foods (and fending off histamine responses).
Histamine Rich Foods to Avoid on a Low Histamine Diet (30-60 Day Experiment)
Ketchup
Food additives
Citrus fruits, bananas, strawberries, pineapples
Cocoa (chocolate)
Nuts
Legumes/beans
Eggs/egg whites
Slow cooked bone broth (for more than 48-72 hours)
5. Incorporate Anti-inflammatory Lifestyle Practices (Kick Stress)
Once you’ve identified potential triggers of your headaches, and commenced a gut-loving protocol, the last tier of kicking headaches to the curb is anti-inflammation–supporting healing of your headache through supplemental supports that gently calm down the pounding in your “head” (and body). While inflammation is NOT always a bad thing (inflammation is a natural response for healing), chronic (lingering) inflammation from ongoing stressors does more harm than good. Your body (and brain) needs some regular anti-inflammatory love to “cool down.”
Anti-Inflammatory Lifestyle Practices:
Sleeping (7-9 hours each night)
Regular daily exercise and lifestyle movement (but not overtraining)
Mindfulness Practices (yoga, tai chi, meditation, journaling)
Limiting over-screen exposure (taking regular breaks)
Stretching and massage/body work
For those who regularly fight headaches, consider “bio-hacking” techniques like: acupuncture, bio-feedback, mindfulness based stress reduction and neurological-feedback, hot-cold therapy, and ozone therapy.
6. Love Your Liver
As a matter of fact, our liver is the organ responsible for metabolizing hormones and neurotransmitters, as well as filtering and detoxing toxic chemicals and pathogens in the body. Ultimately, to fight inflammation and keep your body balanced. However, if your liver health is “off,” then you’re more likely to experience inflammation commonly associated with headaches. Especially, migraines—since serotonin production (calming, soothing neurotransmitter) is drastically reduced. With the right approach, you could cure migraines.
Regular headache suffers should pay special attention to loving their liver with these essentials:
Drink fresh, clean filtered water in a stainless steel or glass water bottle. Also use glassware containers and stainless steel food containers and pans.
Ditch alcohol and coffee for 30 days to see how you feel without it in your system
Eat liver loving foods including: beets, fresh herbs, turmeric, garlic, oregano, apple cider vinegar, lemons, cruciferous veggies, dark leafy greens, organ meats, apples, carrots, grapefruit, green tea, cabbage/fermented sauerkraut
Gradually replace toxic products with natural products. Get rid of dryer sheets, Windex and other non-natural cleaning, hygiene and beauty supplies.
Do a 7-day gentle liver cleanse
After addressing the “basics” with your anti-inflammatory gut health and lifestyle practices, you may even consider a 7-day gentle cleanse.
7-Day Liver Cleanse
Add in a “Liver Cleanse” Support
Days 1-4: Eat 1 organic apple or take a malic acid supplement according to its instructions. Just choose one method. During this time eat clean healthy meals that are simple like lean meats, whole vegetables, fresh fruit,
Days 5-7: Drink a grapefruit or lemon juice mix once per day
2 chopped lemons or 1 small grapefruit (can keep peel on)
2.5 cups of pure water
1-2 tbsp. of virgin olive oil
Blend, then strain drink through a mesh, wire strainer. Add optional 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract (alcohol free) and 2-3 drops stevia for flavor if desired.
Continue to eat regular, balanced meals during the day.
Eat 3 balanced meals of clean and light foods throughout the cleanse, including:
Lean proteins (pastured chicken, wild-caught fish, organic turkey; fermented tofu and soaked beans/lentils if vegetarian/vegan)
Dark leafy greens (cooked and/or raw)
Low starch veggies (cooked)
Healthy fats (avocado, coconut/coconut oil, olives/olive oil, ghee)
Fresh fruits: 1-2 servings (especially berries, grapes, melons)
Gut & liver boosting foods: Bone broth, apple cider vinegar, organic organ meats, beets, herbs, fermented foods.
Avoid: grains/gluten, dairy, eggs, nuts, pork, red meat, coffee, alcohol, sweeteners, sugar, starches
Go “Natural” with Hygiene/Beauty & Cleaning Products:
Makeup free or natural products only
Fluoride free toothpaste or baking soda
Try coconut oil to moisturize, apple cider vinegar and essential oils for a face toner, salt and honey scrubs, yogurt hair masks and other and homemade cleansers
Use white vinegar and baking soda to clean kitchen
Buy a natural laundry detergent and dryer sheets if used (Seventh Generation, ecover, method)
Bonus Supplements*: Add in these supports consistently during your 7 day liver cleanse to support gut health.
Probiotic: 2-3 soil-based organism (like Megaspore), 3 times per day
Prebiotic: Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum, 1/2-1 tsp in water
Liver Cleanse Herbs: Like Livotrit or Gaia’s Liver Cleanse or Apex Energetic’s Metacrin DX or digestive bitters, like liposomal Biocidin (if you have “gut issues”)
Liposomal Curcumin, 1 tsp, 2-3 times per day
Liposomal Glutathione, 1 tsp, 2-3 times per day
Optional: Daily Hormone & Cortisol “Supports”
Female Support: Such as FemGuard Balance or Progestaid. Contains compounds like DIM & vitex/chaste tree for hormonal-driven headaches
Adrenal Adaptogen Herbs (like ashwaganda, relora, or cordyceps) for high cortisol and general stressor driven headaches

How to choose women's bodysuit?
Bodysuit is specially designed for the structural characteristics of the human body. It can adjust the distribution of body fat and reduce fat. It is a kind of functional underwear. Let's share the two directions of selecting bodysuit.
Purchase points of bodysuits
1️⃣In the selection of fabrics, you must choose those with moderate elasticity and good air permeability. For bodysuit supported by soft rods, you must choose soft rods with good elasticity, otherwise it will be very uncomfortable after wearing.
2️⃣In terms of size selection, it is best to ask professionals to measure the size of each circumference of the body (never across the coat), and select and try on different underwear according to their body shape characteristics until the most suitable one is selected. It's a big mistake to choose the size of bodysuits according to your impression of your body. Remember that the selection of body suits should not be too tight, too tight will affect blood circulation, and the model with appropriate tightness should be selected.
3️⃣On the elastic selection of bodysuits
3.1 One is material elasticity. Better bodysuits are mostly made of cotton materials. Because cotton has good air permeability and strong moisture absorption, but the elasticity of cotton itself is very small and can be ignored. Therefore, in order to make the bodysuits more functional and beautiful, some glossy polyester fabrics will be added to the bodysuits. Due to the appropriate proportion, usually feel very comfortable and not allergic. In the important elastic parts of bodysuits, spandex, the most common elastic fiber material, is generally used. Of course, this refers to what is used in the corset of general price.
3.2 For the corset that sells more expensive in the mall, it will choose Lycra material. Its characteristics are good elasticity, good perspiration and memory recovery. However, its disadvantage is that the body shaping effect is not good, and the lifting force and the strength of abdomen and buttocks are too small.
3.3 The other is weaving elasticity, which is blended with a variety of materials. Hexagonal diamond knitting can also achieve good elastic effect. At present, weaving elasticity is widely used in the market. Because the materials of weaving elasticity are very different, it is recommended to buy formal materials with technical detection ability.
4️⃣There are special summer bodysuits in summer, which are light and breathable. The effect of improving the dressing effect while shaping the body is very obvious. Some high-quality long summer bodysuits not only have the function of gathering and lifting the chest, but also show a traceless effect when wearing summer close fitting clothes such as skirts due to the hip wrapping design, so as to avoid the embarrassment caused by Le marks.
Methods of purchasing bodysuits with different body shapes
1️⃣First of all, please take a look at your body. Are there any parts you particularly mind? If not, you need bodysuits similar to basic body care. This type of bodysuits will make the fat distribution reasonable.
2️⃣Many women describe their body as "a little hunchback", which means that the spine needs to be adjusted. Bodysuits with chest hunchback usually have an X-shaped back clip. It should be reminded that these are adjuvant physiotherapy schemes.
3️⃣For the figure with flat hips and thick legs, you can choose body shaping pants. The three-part pants in the body shaping pants are suitable for wearing pants. The three-parts pants not only wrap the thighs and hips to tighten and improve them, but also use the cutting method of overlapping multi-layer strong elastic fabrics on the hips to effectively tighten the hip circumference and show a dynamic posture.
4️⃣Wearing bodysuitsand body shaping pants together can not only improve the dressing effect, but also remind youto maintain the correct sitting and standing posture. Wearing suitable bodysuits for a long time has a good effect on preventing chest expansion and sagging, hip sagging and pelvic widening and deformation.

Creative Inspiration: Sculpting Time, Essays on the Films of Andrei Tarkovsky
Sculpting Time, “a major retrospective of all seven films by the true master of cinema,” presents a collection of essays that examine the films of Andrei Tarkovsky and offer captivating and refreshing insights into the impact and significance of Tarkovsky’s filmmaking career: One of world’s most visionary, celebrated and influential filmmakers, Andrei Tarkovsky made just seven features before his tragically early death at the age of 54. Characterized by metaphysical and spiritual explorations of the human condition, each film is an artistic masterpiece of extraordinary visual beauty and stand as enduring classics of world cinema.
Ivan’s Childhood
by Lanre Bakare, Deputy Arts Editor of Guardian US
Andrei Tarkovsky's debut feature Ivan's Childhood (aka My Name Is Ivan) was described by the Guardian’s Philip French as “one of the great movies about the horrors of the second world war.” Based on a short story by Vladimir Bogomolov and shot in the damp bleakness of Belarus' Pripet Marshes, it's an account of the travails of the titular 12-year-old boy, who is used as a scout by the Soviets after his parents are killed by the Nazis.
Tarkovsky described Ivan--played by the unnervingly accomplished Kolya Burlaiev--as “a character created and absorbed by war,” someone whose life was in constant conflict. And it is. Apart from the strangely arresting opening scenes of him playing on a beach, Ivan and the older officers caring for him--Captain Kholin, Lieutenant Galtsev, and Corporal Katasonych--his war is presented as a never ending cycle of daily nightmares and nightly terrors where he's haunted by what has befallen him. When he plays, it's to act out the fantasy of avenging his parents, while his school yard is the war soaked marsh that surrounds the action.
The soldiers aren't fit to be parents either (there's a vague idea he might live with Katasonych after the war), and continue to use him as a scout even after his predecessors young bodies are hung from trees by the Germans. Tarkovsky said he “wanted to see the grave changes which war makes in the life of a man, in this case a very young one.”
The film introduced Tarkovsky as a director who took imagery and cinematic vividness, which was called “utterly personal and surprisingly spiritual, even transcendent” by the New Yorker, to new levels. Flashbacks to Ivan's Childhood aren't simply a way to fill in the blanks and to explain his actions, they're opportunities to put the camera where it usually doesn't venture and create moments that weren't just calling cards but a blueprint for one of cinema's most iconoclastic careers.
The horrifying well scene, when Ivan falls into the watering hole, is cinema as fever dream, while Kholin kissing the army nurse Masha as he holds her over a trench in a forest of birch trees is as beautiful as the aforementioned well scene is harrowing. As a Soviet film, Ivan's Childhood took a divergent course by placing the individual front and center. The war, although always lurking in the background, is the setting for a young boy's tragedy, one which drags the soldiers in too and forces them to contemplate their decision to keep a young child near conflict.
While other Soviet second world war films, such as The Ballad of a Soldier, captured the world that revolves around conflict--romantic or otherwise--Ivan’s Childhood forces viewers to confront the horror without flinching and in a manner never before seen.
Andrei Rublev
by Sophie Monks Kaufman, Contributing Editor at Little White Lies
Religion is no longer the heart of social life, but in 1966 Andrei Tarkovsky used the semi-biographical, medieval setting of Russian icon-painter Andrei Rublev to express a worldly Christianity that encompasses everyone, even non-believers.
Rublev (played by the craggily handsome Anatoly Solonitsyn) is an artist, a monk and a wanderer. The film is a chronicle of what he sees over a period of 24 years marshalled into eight parts. There are long sequences in which a first-time viewer may struggle to understand a scene’s significance to the overall story. This doesn’t matter. The atmosphere transmits more than any sub-plot, character or exchange. What seems like a challenging runtime contains nothing extraneous, but this is only clear in retrospect, when you cast your eye back over the meticulously crafted landscape. All that happens in the film contributes to the spirit of the artist. All that he has witnessed and endured years to him, hours to the viewer, give rise to a payoff that is as pure an illustration of redemption as anything I have ever seen. But what exactly came before? What do you watch when you watch the film?
It’s hard to write calmly or clearly about a work of filmic art which has a perspective that binds the tiny and the tremendous in endless symbiosis. Tarkovsky depicts the difficult labor that serious industry requires (the last hour shows the building of a large bronze bell), but the whole is concerned with the shape of life--showing in long gracefully shot sequences, Andrei’s encounters with naked pagans, violent royals, dogs, horses, men, women, and children.
The most infamous fact about Andrei Rublev is that you see a horse (which Tarkovsky bought from an abattoir) killed on screen. During battle, the noble beast collapses down a flight of wooden stairs, then lands on a spear--its fall caused by a bullet fired out of sight. The scene lasts less than ten seconds. The sacrifice was for a flicker of celluloid. This anecdote is indicative of the whole, grave procession, which took six years to realize. Everything is rooted in preparation that spans way beyond the film world. Everything is in black and white until it meaningfully attains color. The breadth and depth of natural vistas are so spectacular that it’s sometimes hard to concentrate on foreground conversations, although each wagging tongue is an extension of each character’s soul.
Andrei Rublev’s main stress is over his own moral value and the fate of the Russian people. There are countless faces in this film, all lingered over lovingly, whether on screen for seconds or hours. Andrei Rublev (the film and the man within the film) is about love. Not earthly love, and certainly not sexual love, but a type of fraternal kinship that finds release from personal burdens by sinking into the mud to comfort another. Andrei Rublev (the film and the man within the film) is also about the point at which, after years of bearing witness in a state of speechless despair, hope, wisdom, and talent alchemize to create an enduring work of art.
Solaris
by Jemma Desai, Founder of I Am Dora, Film Program Manager at British Council and BFI London Film Festival Programmer
Andrei Tarkovsky famously described his filmmaking as “sculpting in time.” As cinephile video essayist Kogonada reminds us in the excellent Auteur in Space, in Solaris this sculpture leads us wondering where his meaning might lie: “He [Tarkovsky] will spend five minutes following a man in a ordinary car traveling along the highway and less than two minutes showing his main character traveling through space.”
So how do we understand the meaning of Tarkovsky’s Solaris after it has been sculpted through the perspective of another passage of time: all the way to 2016? Is it the ultimate science-fiction film, an inner space epic of magnificent proportions, or an anachronism that has become pastiche of cinematic futures? Is it not about the future, or space at all and rather, about universality, the past, and memory? Is it, as writer Philip Lopate has beautifully described, about “falling in love with ghosts...the inability of the male to protect the female, the multiple disguises or ‘resurrections’ of the loved one, the inevitability of repeating past mistakes.”
A series of macho face-offs mark its journey to audiences now. Tarkovsky’s film is based on polish author Stanisław Lem’s novel of the same name. Lem famously had had little love for Tarkovsky’s elliptical version of his novel, resenting his infidelity to the source material (a complaint he later repeated on release of Steven Soderbergh’s remake in 2002). Tarkovsky later regretted any fidelity to Lem at all saying: “The rockets and space stations--required by Lem’s novel--were interesting to construct; but it seems to me now that the idea of the film would have stood out more vividly and boldly had we managed to dispense with these things altogether.”
Deeply embedded in any contemporary cineaste’s reception of Tarkovsky’s inner space epic is another takedown by Tarkovsky. Namely his criticism of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) “for being too enamored by the spectacle of the genre, for being too exotic, too immaculate” and his explicit disdain for the concept of genre in general and the West’s take on science-fiction in particular.
Some decades later, in 2009 when director Lars von Trier made what film publication Variety called his “big fat art-film fart,” Antichrist, the review from its premiere press screening in Cannes reported catcalls and boos which were particularly loud when the credits revealed a dedication to Tarkovsky.
Reading back in time had the audience of international film critics equated a reverence to Tarkovsky as a sign of the ultimate pretension? Or had Von Trier committed the ultimate sacrilege to a great Soviet martyr who had famously struggled to make the “anti-spectacle,” the “anti-2001,” the “anti-Antichrist?”
With all this macho jeering, it might be easy to think there is nothing in Solaris, or indeed in Tarkovsky, for the female spectators. At a screening of Solaris I once attended, a discussion took place afterwards on the influence of Tarkovsky and him as a “filmmaker’s filmmaker.” A question from the audience asked the panel’s thoughts on why Tarkovsky’s was so often cited by male directors as an influence. From Von Trier to Carlos Reygadas, Terrence Malick to Alexander Sokurov. Was there something that made the films resonate more meaningfully with men rather than women? It seems fascinating to think about this question now and see if the rise of feminist film theory in the years since the film was produced might have added another dimension to the meanings the film might have today.
In addition to contextualizing assumptions and myths around Tarkovsky’s isolation and difficulties with Soviet authorities, Philip Lopate also unpicks our go-to cinematic references when we watch Solaris today. Lopate cites Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1956) as a better comparative text than Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. For him, the powerful driver in the film is protagonist Kris’ guilt and grief at his wife Hari’s past suicide. On Solaris, these emotions conjure up another Hari, an apparition, seen only through the gaze of Kris’ desperation “to do anything to hold onto [an image of] her, even knowing she isn’t real.”
Lopate’s comparison to Vertigo gains special relevance when we realize that the same year Solaris was produced (1972), feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey began work on her seminal text Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema (later published in 1975), where she explored the idea of the male gaze in cinema, famously unpicking this gaze through her reading of Vertigo.
The ideas in Mulvey’s text--now over 40 years old, and expanded on by many wonderful scholars of both sexes over the years--are my guide map when making my way to Solaris today. This map shows the landmarks of patriarchal critical acclaim as well trod pathways, and invites me on a less travelled path. The monument to meaning at the end of this pathway in here is Natasha Bondarchuk’s extraordinary performance as Hari: one that has gained some extraordinary resonance when in 2010 Bondarchuk revealed she had an affair with director Tarkovsky during the shoot, and attempted suicide when they split in 1972.
So when you go on the journey to Solaris, take this map with you. Make like Tarkovsky and sculpt in time to mold your perspective. Make your way through the multiple gazes on Hari, and Bondarchuck, to see them both for yourself.
Mirror
by Michael Pattison, Critic
In Mirror, Andrei Tarkovsky’s legacy for unforgettable imagery finds its purest form. This intensely autobiographical work, which channels the filmmaker’s childhood memories as well as his father’s own memoirs, is structured as a dreamlike mood poem, progressing by means of associative leaps rather than a strict cause and effect logic. It helps to unshackle the images, affording them a freedom to work as standalone compositions.
For Tarkovsky, these images held deeply personal meanings, rooted to his family history as well as culturally specific notions of Russian identity. But in their startling simplicity, such images have repeatedly proven to be profoundly relatable and endlessly moving for a broad range of filmmakers and cinephiles. In Sight & Sound’s most recent “best ever films” poll, Mirror was voted 19th by critics and ninth by other directors.
The painterly compositions presented in Tarkovsky’s most challenging and rewarding film may defy explanation in narrative terms: a burning barn watched on from a family home, a woman levitating from her bed as she sleeps, a fingerprint shrinking from a tabletop. Though powerful and absorbing in themselves, such moments are only enriched by their juxtaposition. Tarkovsky weaves through this fabric in such a way that opposites don’t so much collide as merge: peacetime and war, the domestic and the social, the past and the far past.
Otherwise ordinary scenes, such as a wind gliding through trees, become strangely haunting, as if the elements are being controlled. Tarkovsky knew that the magic of memories was that they’re always half-fabricated, distorted, allowed to blur into one another like a thick soup. We are guided through this by a masterfully imaginative, rhythmically precise soundscape, in which voiceover utterances of “Papa” and “Mama” act like punctuation marks that glue the emotional meaning of the work together. Likewise, we must adjust to the inexplicable switches between sepia and color--as if this too is part of the magic.
Tarkovsky’s longstanding reputation for slow, single-take sequences is both deserved and reductive. While it’s certainly true that the Russian director has inspired whole waves of filmmakers with scenes of notable duration, he also understood as well as anyone how to mix things up. Mirror, which came at the midpoint of his career, might be approached today as the summation of two conflicting styles that run through the master’s work: complex, drawn-out long takes on the one hand, and exhilarating montage on the other.
Indeed, some of the images in Mirror are all the more beautiful for being so fleeting. And while many of them unfold in slow motion, the film itself never feels slow. Though he helped legitimize a form of filmmaking that was free from the pressure to constantly advance story, Tarkovsky grasped that brevity was the true soul of poetry. Maximizing their visceral impact, he cuts his slow-motion scenes short at the very moment they jerk to dramatic life. As when a bird crashes through a window, for instance, or when another takes flight from the hand of a dying man.
Stalker
by Chal Ravens, Writer for Fact Magazine and The Wire
Stalker contains just under 17 minutes of music--a tiny fraction of the film’s 160-minute runtime--yet its otherworldly atmosphere and subtle science-fiction twist rest on Andrei Tarkovsky and composer Eduard Artemyev’s extraordinary handling of sound. Long, disorienting sections of near-silence, echoes of classical music in the clatter of passing trains, a locomotive rhythm dissolving into eerie electronic drones--nothing is quite what it seems when you enter the Zone.
Even at the end of his career, Tarkovsky had conflicting ideas about the purpose of music in cinema. In his book Sculpting in Time, published just before his death in 1986, he emphasized how “important and precious” music had been to his films, but admitted: “In my heart of hearts I don’t believe films need music at all.” In Stalker, he attempted to resolve this contradiction, showing how the barest use of sound could be even more expressive than an emotive musical score. He directed Artemyev not to write music but to use sound to create “states and conditions” establishing the Zone’s atmosphere of unreality. Watching the film, our suspicions are raised through subtle changes--a distant river suddenly becomes audible, beckoning our three travelers, or we hear a breeze but notice the grass isn’t swaying. The laws of physics do not seem to apply in this strange territory.
Artemyev, one of Russia’s pioneers of electronic music, used the British-made Synthi 100 synthesizer to build on this alien mood. Stalker’s short musical score, first heard in the opening titles, places the long, airy drones of the Synthi 100 under a flute and an Iranian stringed instrument called a tar. This suggestion of Eastern music (particularly Indian classical music, where a tanpura provides a continuous harmonic drone underneath a sitar’s melody) adds to the sense of dislocation--we’re a long way from the sepia-toned Russian town where we first encounter the Stalker.
Artemyev’s electronic scores (including those for Solaris and Mirror) added to a wave of synthesizer-based soundtracks in the 1970s, particularly in sci-fi and horror, where their unfamiliar tones helped establish worlds where normal rules do not apply, as in A Clockwork Orange, The Exorcist, Suspiria and the sound design of Alien, released the same year as Stalker. Tarkovsky believed electronic music had huge potential for cinema, as it could remain indistinct and indefinable, working subtly at the edge of our awareness: “The moment we hear what it is, and realize that it’s being constructed, electronic music dies.”
In Stalker he further loosens our grasp on reality by hiding fragments of famous classical pieces (”La Marseillaise,” Bach’s “Tannhäuser Overture,” Ravel’s “Bolero” and Beethoven’s “Ninth Symphony”) in the din of passing trains, like the everyday illusion of hearing a familiar song under the noise of a locomotive. Just as the experience of mishearing a melody shows that what we perceive as reality is always colored by our perception, so we might suspect that, in their quest for the Room, the Stalker, Writer, and Professor are really searching for themselves. On their long journey into the Zone, the rhythmic clanking of the motorized trolley dissolves into synthesized drones and metallic echoes. The camera ignores the moving wheels and much of the passing scenery, instead panning between the travelers’ faces; we seem to enter their very thoughts as they cross into the unknown. Their journey is not merely a physical effort, but a mental transformation. Tarkovsky and Artemyev’s achievement is to erase the distinction between the physical world and our inner lives.
Nostalgia
by Carmen Gray, Film Critic/Journalist
Andrei Tarkovsky made Nostalgia in Italy toward the end of a career cut short by his death from cancer. It was the first feature he made abroad, and its culturally alienated protagonist can be seen as a mirror of his own deep homesickness and longing for Russia. Tarkovsky had forged his career under the Soviet regime, but had bitterly struggled to avoid having his work suppressed by a bureaucratic studio system tasked with realizing the state’s view of cinema as a propaganda tool to indoctrinate the masses with heroic communist ideals. He alarmed the authorities with his highly intuitive, personal, and poetic approach to directing. His films, which all deal with spiritual crisis, tend towards a dream logic, incorporating visually stunning imagery with fragments of memory in a manner that defies simple, set interpretation. He did not overtly identify as a political dissident, but he found the pressure exerted by the state on his ability to create with unhampered authenticity so taxing that after going to Italy in 1982 to shoot his sixth feature, he announced he wouldn’t return. The Soviet authorities actively prevented Nostalgia from winning the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes. This obstruction only strengthened Tarkovsky’s resolve not to go back to his beloved homeland, even though his young son was there and not permitted to leave.
Tarkovsky had made autobiographical work before, his 1975 masterpiece Mirror being essentially a weave of childhood recollections set into the wider context of Russia’s tumultuous history. The fictional story of Nostalgia, which he dedicated to his mother, holds clear parallels to his own predicament of self-imposed exile. A Russian writer, also named Andrei and played by Oleg Yankovsky, has travelled to Italy to research compatriot 18th-century serf composer Pavel Sosnovsky. Andrei is suffering in the throes of a profound sense of displacement. The companionship and declared affection of his beautiful interpreter Eugenia (Domiziana Giordano) only serves as an additional strain. The tension between creative freedom and ancestral belonging troubles his thoughts and is an irreconcilable problem echoed in the fate of Sosnovsky, who had felt compelled to return to Russia despite knowing he would be enslaved again. There, he had turned to drink before committing suicide.
Tarkovsky often used rain and crackling fire in his work to create oneiric, mystically charged worlds teeming with the elemental grandeur of nature. Nostalgia plays out in ruins flooded with water with dripping walls in which indoors and outside merge; in the eerie haze of a steaming Tuscan spa; in a pool in which Andrei attempts to walk from one end to the other without letting a candle extinguish. This last act is called for by local Domenico (Erland Josephson), who may be martyr or madman and who makes an extreme stand against the catastrophic state of the modern world. A final iconic image shows Andrei lying with his dog in front of a Russian dacha, nestled inside an Italian cathedral. Tarkovsky once claimed, after all, that Russians are fatally attached to their roots.
The Sacrifice
by Tom Seymour, Editor of British Journal of Photography and Journalist
In May 1986, a month after the Chernobyl disaster, The Sacrifice won the Grand Prix at Cannes. Andrei Tarkovsky, at the age of 54, could not accept the award. He was in Paris, battling lung cancer.
The prize was collected by his son, Andrei Jr. The Soviets had waited until the recalcitrant genius was beyond cure before granting his children permission to stray beyond the Iron Curtain. Back in Russia, the award went unreported by the state media.
Tarkovsky died, in exile, later that year. And so The Sacrifice, this Dostoyevskian epic of apocalyptic grandeur, can be seen as his final farewell.
Ingmar Bergman once said: “Tarkovsky for me is the greatest director, the one who invented a new language, true to the nature of film, as it captures life as a reflection, life as a dream.”
The Sacrifice seems to be the Andrei's way of returning Bergman's compliment. It was shot in the summer of 1985, on the Swedish island of Gotland (the Swedish military denied Tarkovsky access to Bergman's island of Fårö). Employing, to large effect, the Swedish language, Tarkovsky also used two of Bergman's veterans--the cinematographer Sven Nykvist, and the actor Erland Josephson. In the vein of Bergman, the film asks questions of Biblical proportions to frame a midlife crises. The Vatican includes The Sacrifice as one of 45 “great religious films,” yet it is essentially a story about a rather dysfunctional birthday party.
Josephson plays Alexander, a writer and academic of unflinching sincerity whom tells us, in an opening monologue, of humanity’s great moral failings in the authoritarian age of nuclear arms. “Humanity is on a dangerous road,” he says. “We are living like savages.”
Quite a way to kick off one’s birthday. We meet him in his remote, spartan home on the banks of the sea, joined by his wife Adelaide (Susan Fleetwood), her teenage daughter Martha (Filippa Franzén), and their young son (Tommy Kjellqvist), referred to only as Little Man, and whom cannot speak. Two housemaids hover in the background, and he is visited by two friends whose provenance remains uncertain.
The roll of thunder is heard in the skies overhead, and then the thunderous shudder of military aircraft passing by. We hear mysterious cries, faraway in the night. Then a voice on the radio intones with words that shake the party; a nuclear holocaust is imminent, the world is about to end. Only a deal with God, an anti-Faustian-pact, holds the chance of salvation.
In One Day in the Life of Andrei Arsenevich, a documentary about Tarkovsky from another cult cineaste, the late French director Chris Marker, we are given access to quiet, revertant footage of the great man brought low with sickness, greeting his family after years apart. Marker's film contextualizes this with, seven months hence, backstage filming of The Sacrifice. Such sunlit, shimmery footage of Tarkovsky--already ill, exactingly and, in his own way, joyously planning the film's climatic end--is a lovely foil to this weighty, portentous film.
For it is possible to read The Sacrifice as a metaphor for Tarkovsky’s own state of being. Six years earlier, he seemed to foretell the Chernobyl disaster with Stalker, which takes place in an abandoned, desolate expanse called The Zone. Tarkovsky, his wife Larisa Tarkovskaya and Anatoli Solonitsyn, the lead actor in Stalker, all died from a comparable type of lung cancer (Vladimir Sharun, the film’s sound designer, claimed the director and cast were exposed to lethal carcinogens by the production’s proximity to a chemical plant). When he shot The Sacrifice, he must have known the end was in sight.
In the opening act of The Sacrifice, Alexander helps his son plant a tree by the sea. Without speaking, the small boy listens to his father’s instructions--if the tree is watered, every day, it will become something larger than ourselves. It will outlast us, and in that act, a small part of the world will change.
And so, in the final moments of The Sacrifice, we see Little Man, now a bit bigger, carefully watering the sapling, still fragile but steadily growing, winding its roots into the earth.
What a way to sign off. That maybe, in the act of dedicating oneself to small tasks, in the embrace of sacrifice, we might find our chance to build a legacy.
