We are pretty much clueless when it comes to Insurance policies. I ALREADY LOOKED UP THE INFO ON WIKIPEDIA, SO PLEASE DON'T GIVE ME MORE OF THAT. I want opinions on what the best kind of Life Insurance is for us. Term (but if it is a 30 year term, does that mean when we are for example 54 and something happens after the 30 years, we aren't covered???) or Permanant (whole life, and others). Why won't insurance pay for my MRI?

Yesterday my mother told me that they are charging $11,000 for my MRI and insurance isn't going to pay for it. She also told me my maxillofacial specialist told her at the most it should have been $3000 total or $1200 for each side. Why does insurance pay for the surgery to correct TMJ disorders but not the MRI to diagnose it? Even when surgery is a last resort effort to correct the problem and isn't recommended most of the time. And it sucks even more for me once I am 18 because I'm basically screwed.""

How is the health insurance bill in the Senate going to lower costs?
Can someone explain to me how the bill going through the Senate right now does anything to control costs for the average family or person in the US? So far this is what I see: 1) If you have a good plan they are going to tax it - Raises costs 2) The insurance companies will have to cover everyone, even preexisting conditions - Raises costs 3) Cuts payouts to health providers for Medicare - Raises costs on others (they have to make it up) 4) Shifts costs to States for Medicaid - Raises state costs which raise state taxes 5) Cuts how much the Government pays for drugs - Raises cost when pharma makes up costs on private plans 6) Forces businesses to provide insurance for employees - Raises costs on all products Can anyone explain how this bill can lower costs for those who have insurance and keep them from rising? Questions about car insurance?
I need to make a change regarding my car insurance but I am not sure what is considered being dishonest. I got the policy through an insurance agent and i think the below factors are what is causing it to be a little high. 1. I live in my mom's house at the moment but I pay rent to her. On time/every month, it's non negotiable. Am I ok to say that I rent? 2. I have had my car for two and a half months and have never driven to work. It just seems like a huge hassle to wait in traffic and pay high parking rates. However the agent put it down that I drive to work and for pleasure. If I choose pleasure only would that lock me into really never ever being able to drive to work? I did an online quote with the same company that I have now (Progressive) and put in rent and drive for pleasure only;it came out $40 cheaper. I'm just not sure if I'm being dishonest. Thank you!""

My dad added a new plan to his inurnace coverage that teh insurance rep told him would only cost him $3 a month. Next thing we know, our premium goes up by about $100. Is there a way to tell if the lady lied about the $3 a month thing and that it really was more like $15-$20 a month? I asked another rep and she said that there was a rate increase. It very well may be a rate increase, but these people just seem so incredibly shady that I'm not putting it past them one second to lie. Perhaps I can ask a different state farm why there was an increase in our bill? Basically, how can I find out for SURE what that $100 increase was for? Without asking the reps we usually go through? Perhaps call the main State Farm branch? Thanks!""

I was hit by a car. Which insurances should be reported?
Okay... I was driving my parents car to work. I am 19. No tickets or crashes since I was 15 and a half. I was rear ended when I stopped for an ambulance. My parents have insurance on that car, but I am not on their policy. I did have my mother's permission to use the vehicle. I have my own liability insurance but on a car that I sold several months ago. I maintained that insurance just in case anything happened. The woman that hit me immediately admitted blame. She also admitted blame to the officer that came out to see us. In fact, she cut him off to admit blame. I hope I am good to go as far as any sort of payment for damages. I understand if I get ticketed for not being on their policy... I just don't want to have to pay for my parent's car out of pocket, I can't afford that. Do all three party's insurances need to be reported? My dad is trying to tell me that my insurance is the only one that needs be reported as well as the woman's that hit me. I disagree. I think that all three need to be - but he's older and wiser than me. I think he just doesn't want his rate to increase so he's trying to make me call the woman and tell her to not report their insurance. Fml, i'm confused. thanks.""

Had a teacher who only allowed 2 bathroom pass per 9 Weeks! And you had to sign for them. However I don't think she would have prevented a student if they were visibly ill. She'd let them go to the nurse- except- oh wait. We didn't have one. Our high school nurse was the nurse from the elementary school across the busy ass highway. If you absolutely had to see her, she'd have to drive over. We had nurse-like teachers for the diabetic kids and special needs kids, respectively. But they weren't like you could just go see them.
And this teacher also made us put our phones in Phone Jail. So it's not like you could text a parent or someone who cares that you don't feel well. Or that you had to use the bathroom and weren't allowed.
Not to mention the fact that Mrs. White isnât qualified to teach. She should be required to take a remedial English course. âI have wentâ? please. Itâs âI have goneâ, Mrs. White.Â
first, my kid would not sign anything without me seeing it first. 2nd, upon seeing it i would be at the superintendantâs office the next morning. then we would speak to the teacher. black folk gotta nip it in the bud.

Eye Problems Due to Online Classes
A Studentâs Guide to Eye Health and Wellness
Eye troubles are a common side effect of being a college student. Students spend so much time reading textbooks, writing papers, and staring at lighted screens â computers, social media, online gaming and tv/movie watching â itâs almost inevitable. Eye issues should not be ignored. Students can read on to learn the importance of paying attention to eye health, how to prevent eye issues and what to do if eye concerns arise.
Understanding Vision Problems & Their Impact on Student Success
88 percent of Americans know that digital devices can negatively affect their vision, and yet the average American still spends seven or more hours per day looking at their screens.Â
The average millennial spends nine hours per day on devices such as smartphones, tablets, LED monitors and flat-screen TVâs. About 11 million Americans over age 12 do need vision correction.
Possibly the last thing on a college studentâs mind is eye health. But the reality is that eye health should be near the top of a studentâs to-do list to prevent vision issues that could negatively affect the academic and social experiences of their college years, and perhaps their lives beyond school. Although vision generally remains stable during the young adult years, problems may develop without any obvious signs or symptoms. Add in the potential for college-induced eye strain and infections, and it is clear college students should pay attention to their vision.
Common Eye Problems due to Online Class
1. Eye Strain
- The most prevailing eye problem among college students is eye strain, a direct result of all the reading and computer use college life demands, usually for long periods of time and often in less-than-ideal lighting and ergonomic environments. Eye strain can cause eyes to be dry, watery, itchy, red, or irritated. Other symptoms include a burning sensation, blurry vision, light sensitivity and difficulty focusing. These symptoms can be accompanied by headaches; neck, shoulder or back pain, sleep issues, and overall fatigue.
2. Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)
-ïżœïżœAlso known as digital eye strain. The AOA defines it as a group of eye and vision-related problems that result from prolonged computer, tablet, e-reader and cell phone use. Computer vision syndrome is diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination. Treatment can involve special glasses for computer viewing, vision therapy/eye exercises, and making changes in how you view the screen. These can include adjusting computer angle, seating position, lighting, adding an anti-glare screen filter, and frequent blinking and rest breaks.
3. Eye Infections
-Â The other big potential eye concern in college involves bacterial, viral and parasitic infections. Infectious eye diseases can spread quickly in the crowded classes, cafeterias, dorm rooms, gyms and other public spaces of a college or university. Conjunctivitis Also known as Pink Eye, conjunctivitis occurs when infection strikes the eye surface and the inner surface of the eyelids. Eyes become red, swollen, inflamed and sore and can emit a discharge. Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are very contagious, and can spread by close personal contact, through the air by coughing and sneezing, and by touching an object or surface with germs on it then touching your eyes. (the third type, allergic conjunctivitis, is not infectious).Herpes Keratitis A viral infection of the eye caused by herpes simplex virus. It is also very contagious and causes eye pain, redness, discharge and blurred vision. Left untreated, herpes keratitis can severely damage the eye.
12 Causes of Vision Problems of a Student
1. Too much time in front of a computer
2. Studying and reading in poor lighting conditions, like low-light dorm room cramming session all-nighters
3. Glare on a computer screen
4. Being the wrong distance from a computer screen
5. Poor seating posture
6. Lack of blinking
7. Uncorrected vision problems
8. Not enough sleep
9. Poor diet
10. Inadequate hygiene measures, such as infrequent handwashing, rubbing
eyes
11. Sharing make-up
12. Showering or swimming in contact lenses
What College Students Should Do to Maintain Eye Health
Vision problems can greatly affect learning ability, a big reason why students in college should not be dismissive of their eye health. College students who give heed to their eye health care now may avoid potentially serious problems later. The following is a list of eye care tips college students might want to consider incorporating into their daily routines.
Periodic eye exams. Theyâre not just for senior citizens. AOA recommends college-age adults have an eye exam every two years, more often if at risk for eye problems due to a family history of eye disease, diabetes, or hypertension. See an eye doctor in between if your eyes bother you in any way. Early detection of potential problems is paramount. And make sure glasses or contacts prescriptions are up to date. Blinking. This subtle act of closing and opening your eyes is important to keep eyes moist and refreshed. Artificial tears are an option if your eyes get dried out. Move to another seat if air vents are blowing in your face. Try an eye massage. A good suggestion for any time your eyes feel tired but especially after staring at a book or screen for hours. Rub hands together until the friction warms them, then gently press against eyes to help relax the eye muscles.
Regular computer breaks. Stand up, stretch, walk around, make a sandwich, anything that gives eyes a respite from close-up work. Try the 20-20-20 rule â look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes for 20 seconds. Adjust the computer. Optimize to your liking the brightness, size of text font, monitor height, distance between you and computer. Eliminate screen glare. Adjust room lighting and curtains or blinds, change computer location or use a glare reduction filter on your screen. Proper posture. It can make a big difference in eye strain. Top of computer monitor should be just below eye level, feet flat on the floor, and arms at a 90-degree angle. Try computer glasses. Theyâre designed specifically for ideal vision in the space between you and your computer.
Correct lighting. Overhead lighting might be too harsh and bright. On the other hand, low-light dorm room ambiance may be too dim. (Donât study by flashlight.) Find the optimum illumination for your eye comfort.
Eat a balanced diet. Diet is important to eye health. Research indicates nutrition may prevent or delay age-related eye diseases. A healthy diet also reduces risk of diseases that can lead to eye troubles, such as hypertension and diabetes. Consider a daily multivitamin to fill nutritional gaps in your diet.
Exercise regularly. Exercise improves blood circulation, increases oxygen levels to the eyes and helps remove toxins.
Protect eyes from the sun. Sun exposure can lead to vision loss and increase risk of certain types of cataracts and cancers of the eyelid. Protect yourself with hats, visors, and sunglasses that block out harmful rays.
Quit smoking. Better yet, donât start. Smoking exposes eyes to high levels of dangerous chemicals and increases the risk for developing cataracts and macular degeneration.
Wash your hands. From handrails to handshakes to high-fives, everything you come into contact with in your daily life can be germ-laden. Touching or rubbing your eyes with unwashed hands is a surefire way to pick up an infection.
Donât share make-up. Creamy or liquid eye make-up, especially, are breeding grounds for infections. Use your own and replace every three months.
Remember that water and contact lenses donât mix. Do not shower, swim or get in a hot tub in contact lenses. Only use sterile disinfecting solution to store contacts â not water â and keep your case clean.
Go outside. Beside the benefits of fresh air, students who spend a lot of time studying indoors become at risk of becoming nearsighted. A study cited by AAO found than more than 50 percent of college graduates become nearsighted. Other research shows spending more time outdoors can protection vision from getting worse.

Should a Teenager Have a Bedtime?
Are you constantly having to fight the âbattle of the bedtimeâ with your teen?
Well, keep fighting the good fight.
Despite your teenâs protests, getting them to bed at a decent hour is one of the best gifts you can give your growing child.
And itâs not just about having to practically drag them out of bed in the morning; itâs about preparing them to function well and experience success.
How Much Sleep Do Teens Need?
Teens typically do not get as much sleep as they should, and as they get older, the more sleep they require.
Johns Hopkins pediatrician, Michael Crocetti, MD, MPH, says that teens should be getting nine and a half to ten hours of sleep each night.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest that anywhere from 8 to 10 hours of sleep is necessary.
Why Are Most Teens Not Getting Enough Sleep?
Of a national sample of high school teenagers in the 2015 national and state Youth Risk Behavior Surveys, nearly three-fourths of teenagers were found not to be getting enough sleep.
Whatâs the reason? Well, there are many, but the most likely reasons are cell phones, tablets, and laptops.
Whether chatting through Snapchat or cruising Instagram, teens today are glued to their screens.
Other common reasons are nightly homework, busy schedules, part-time jobs, and rapidly changing hormones, which set the bodyâs internal clock to a later time.
Other factors may be at play as well that can interfere with a good nightsâ rest. Perhaps they struggle with health issues that prevent sleep, such as:
insomnia
sleep apnea
narcolepsy
restless leg syndrome
ADHD
anxiety
Their home life might also be the culprit â perhaps the student is homeless, has to sleep on the couch, sleeps in a noisy neighborhood, or was up all night taking care of a baby sibling.
The flip side might also be to blame; a lack of sleep for teens could be caused by how early school starts.
The older students typically start school earlier in the morning than the younger students, despite the teens naturally going to bed later.
Furthermore, teens who take the bus to school may have to wake up hours earlier to catch their bus.
Even the CDC recommends that schools should start laterâ8:30 am at the earliestâto allow teens the chance to get the sleep they very much need.
Those schools with later start times even see an increase in enrollment and attendance. Yet many high schools start well before 8:00 am.
Itâs not surprising, then, that itâs so hard to get a teenager out of bed in the morning.
What Happens If a Teen Doesnât Get Enough Sleep?
When a teen doesnât get enough sleep, whether for one night or over a period, they arenât able to undergo the vital activities they need to, to function well.
A lack of sleep can lead to several deficits ranging from minor to severe, and even deadly.
Because sleep is so necessary, the brain will find a way to get some shuteye, even at inopportune times. This could lead to dangerous or deadly situations of falling asleep behind the wheel of an automobile.
With so many teens and adults sleep deprived, itâs no wonder that there are more than 100,000 car accidents every year due to falling asleep at the wheel.
Besides the dangers of a lack of sleep, there are a host of cognitive, emotional, and physical effects to not getting enough quality shuteye:
negatively affects mood, making your teen moodier and more irritable, impatient, or curt.
limits cognitive function, or the brainâs ability to learn, listen, and concentrate. Memory and recall may also be affected.
contributes to acne, and since acne heals while you sleep, not getting enough of it will make breakouts last longer.
causes cravings for unhealthy foods and may lead to binge eating and weight gain.
makes it more likely to contract an illness as your bodyâs defenses have not had time to rest.
creates situations where there may be unsafe use of equipment or motor vehicles, leading to increased injuries and accidents.
causes poor judgment and lowers impulse control, making teens more likely to make unhealthy or risky decisions.
increases feelings of hopelessness, sadness, and depression.
increases the risk of developing some cancers, diabetes type-2, Alzheimerâs, and multiple sclerosis.
What Can You Do as Parents?
As a parent, it is your job to help your teenager get adequate sleep each night.
The Sleep Foundation, the CDC, Johns Hopkins, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and other health professionals all recommend similar strategies to help your teen avoid sleep deprivation:
1. Set a Bedtime
Establish a set bedtime for your teen. Â Teens who have an established bedtime are more likely to get adequate sleep when compared to a teen with no set bedtime.
2. Limit Caffeine
Limit the young personâs intake or the availability of caffeinated beverages such as coffee, soda, and tea. And, help them to develop the habit of avoiding it later in the day.
3. Create a Bedtime Routine
Create a bedtime routine and stick to it. Your body will naturally recognize this routine as a signal to start preparing for sleep.
4. Turn Off the Television
Turn off the television. Sleeping with the TV on has been shown to lessen sleep quality. It helps some people fall asleep, only to wake them a short time later.
5. Limit Screen Time
Limit screen time and light exposure. Donât allow teens to have their cell phones in their bedrooms (they will be on them).
6. Prepare the Bedroom for Sleep
Create a bedroom for sleeping that is cool, quiet, and dark. They may even want to use a white noise machine or ceiling fan to make a gentle humming noise.
7. Provide Natural Sleep Aids
Your teenager may benefit from natural sleep aids such as a sleep mask or weighted blanket. Our son uses the Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket for better sleep.
8. Be a Sleep Model
Most of all, parents should model healthy sleeping habits, hopefully resulting in a well-rested and healthy family.
Sleep is as vital to life as oxygen, food, and water. Not getting enough of it is detrimental to a teenâs health, well-being, and the well-being of others around them.
So, while your teen may want to stay up late on social media or playing video games, make sure they get to bed at a decent hour.

Five Ways On How To Prepare For Aetna Medical Insurance | aetna medical insurance
If you are considering purchasing health insurance through your employer, you may be wondering how to apply for Aetna medical insurance. If you are a business employee, you are usually limited to group insurance through your employer. However, if you are self-employed or have been offered coverage by an individual or family member, you can purchase your own medical insurance plan directly from Aetna.
One of the most important things you need to know about Aetna health insurance is that it covers a wide variety of services. When you purchase coverage through the company, you will receive a unique personal identification number or EIN, which is required when applying for insurance. You can also download the Aetna Health application for your smartphone to make use of the mobile app to monitor your progress toward your deductible, view your existing coverage, and request additional copies of your Aetna health insurance policy to be sent to your home address. You can also use your phone to call an Aetna representative anytime you have a question. This is important because they are available twenty-four hours a day to help with any questions or concerns you may have during inpatient treatment.
When you apply for coverage, you must complete a standard questionnaire concerning your medical history and any prior conditions. After this, you will be asked to select the type of coverage you want, whether it is a hospital, group, individual or prescription drug coverage. In order for your plan to be accepted by the insurance company, you must meet the health requirements stated in the questionnaire.
If you are an international student with diabetes, one option you may be able to select from is an Aetna medical student health insurance plan. If you reside outside the United States, there are other options available. For example, if you are enrolled at a college in a foreign country, or if you are a U.S. citizen who travels frequently, you may want to enroll in a local Aetna service which may offer a better plan than the global variety. If you do not currently participate in an international health care plan, you should discuss this with a representative.
Another type of coverage that may be available to you is prescription drug coverage. Through this type of plan, you will be reimbursed for prescriptions you purchase. Prescription drug coverage from your health insurance plans will most likely cover brand name designer drugs that are prescribed by your doctor. It will also cover generic medications and over the counter (OTC) medicines. If you have a pre-existing condition, you may have to pay a higher co-pay for prescriptions. There are a few companies who specialize in offering prescription drug coverage to individuals with various needs, but these plans may not be available in all locations.
You should also inquire about how much you will need to pay as deductibles. Most Aetna medical insurance plans have a range of deductibles that you can choose from. These deductibles can include a lot of out-of-pocket expenses, so it is very important that you are comfortable with the amount that you will need in order to prevent overwhelming medical expenses down the road.

I was not aware of the impact I could make
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 goals that were developed in 2012 at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro. Â These 17 goals success of all these goals is interconnected, success/failure in one affects the success of others. SDGs aim to meet the political, environmental and economic challenges of the world by 2030 and were developed to continue the progress made by Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) from the year 2000 till 2015. Advancements made by the MDGs include increasing access to water and sanitation, decreasing income poverty, greatly improving maternal health and decreasing child mortality, development a movement for free basic education and âmost significantly, the MDGs made huge strides in combatting HIV/AIDS and other treatable diseases such as malaria and tuberculosisâ. In order to meet the 2030 SGDs set globally, South Africa formed a National Development Plan to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality. The Voluntary National Review in July 2019 revealed the NDP has a 74% convergence with the SDGs.
In this weekâs blog we have been asked to present 5 SDGs, that one could work towards within the community they are currently working in. I have chosen to focus on the following (Please see image below for names) SDG 2, 3, 5, 11 and 4.
The township is made up of low-income families. The population in the community in question has been observed to comprise mostly of the youth with high levels of unemployment, poverty and low levels of education being rife. Though the population is mostly unemployed youth, a dearth of social and recreational facilities has been observed. This leads me to think âWhy not make gardening fashionable among the youth?â SDG 2 seeks to end hunger, provide and achieve food security together with improved nutrition and lastly seeks to promote sustainable agriculture. What is food security? Food security is said to be âachieved when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy lifeâ. FAO. 1996. Rome Declaration on World Food Security and World Food Summit Plan of Action. World Food Summit 13-17 November 1996. Rome. The Park already provides a gardening programme for the elderly where a variety of vegetables are planted. In conjunction with IYD - a non-profit organization based in the community whose objectives are to uplift, revive and empower the youth of the area through focusing on education, health and social activities, the park (this will be a student project) can expand the gardening programme to the youth. At the Park youth will be taught how to garden and then urged to start their own gardens at their homes in order contribute to the fostering of food security in their homes. By involving the unemployed youth in this gardening programme occupational reconstruction will occur where the youth will use gardening âto remake ordinary life in response to a problematic situation.â (Frank, Gelya, & Muriithi, 2015). Principles of occupational reconstruction; the problematic situation being unemployment, gardening being the meaningful and purposeful action and voluntary engagement, creative transformations and hopeful experimentalism will be evident.
Every Monday to Wednesday morning at the clinic my classmates and I conduct health promotion talks to the members of the community who have come to the clinic that day. While promoting health and well-being by presenting on different topics (i.e. diabetes and healthy living, mental health, arthritis and developmental norms) we also promote occupational therapy as a profession. By doing this, we are promoting health and therefore contributing towards meeting SGD 3 â Good health and well-being. What else can be done by us students? Students in collaboration with the clinic and the local radio station (located on the same premises as the clinic) can provide health promotion talks on the last Friday of every month. The health promotion talks will be delivered to the community through the radio. Topics will center around the targets of SDG 3 which are to:
· Reduce the global maternal mortality ratio
· End preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age
· End the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases
· Reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases
· Strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse,
· Halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents
· Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services, including for family planning, information and education, and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programs
·        Achieve universal health coverage, including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health-care services and access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all
(Sdgcounting, 2017)
During the past few weeks our health promotion talks have been well received. Every time we play the recording of our health promotion speech, the members of the community are startled at first but are soon observed to be listening attentively and some even come forward to ask questions. Because of the above, I am sure the health promotion talks through the radio will be well-received too.
She does not have a phone, anybody who needs to speak to her on the phone must go through her boyfriend first and if he deems the reason given good enough, he will pass the phone to her. She has permanent scars on her back from beatings from him yet she still says âbut Iâm also partly to blameâ. That is a client at the Park. âWhy?â I ask myself. Are the laws on gender equality in South Africa not strict enough? The Constitution does state that âthe state may not unfairly discriminate directly or indirectly against anyone on one or more grounds, including race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, language and birth.â . Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. (1996). Â The Domestic Violence Act (DVA) No 116 of 1998 and the Criminal Law (Sexual Offenses and Related Matters Act (SOA) No 32 of 2007) were formed in response to violence against women in South Africa. Many campaigns have also been formed to combat the violence against women one of them being the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign. SGD 5 seeks to achieve gender equality by 2030 and one of its targets is to eliminate all forms of violence against all girls and women. In support of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign, my classmates and I on this block can start raising awareness about the campaign by informing the women and young girls of the community about the purpose of the campaign, urge them to attend events of this campaign that will be hosted near them and impart information on how to seek help from organizations like POWA and FAMSA. The reason for only raising awareness about the campaign is because by the time the 16 Days of Activism begins our block would have ended.
Without realizing it, my classmates and I are contributing to meeting target 11.7 of the SDGâs which seeks to âprovide universal access to safe, inclusive and accessible, green and public spaces, in particular for women and children, older persons and persons with disabilitiesâ. We are transforming an unused piece of land at the Park (which is a green space itself) into a ready/story-telling/skit enacting corner by demarcating it with colorful rocks and making benches out of pallets. The objective of our green space is to use the environment as a treatment and education tool as this private space can be used for reading, story-telling and skits. relaxation, peace, and an escape from heat. In the Community Rehabilitation Matrix through this green space the Education pillar will be targeted, in particular early childhood, non-formal and lifelong learning.
Undoubtedly children with only physical disabilities and no cognitive disabilities experience occupational dysfunction which Joubert (2007) describes as âa state in which an individual cannot or can only partially perform everyday occupations due to physical or mental impairmentâ and occupational injustice defined by Watson (2004) as âa situation or society in which the recognition of and provision for the occupational needs of an individual or community are not recognizedâ. This is due to not being allowed to receive an education from a mainstream school because the buildings of the schools do not cater for children with disabilities. Target 4.5 under SDG 4 seeks to âeliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for the vulnerable, including persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and children in vulnerable situationsâ. Advocacy is an integral component of an OTâs job. To contribute to reaching target 4.5 part of our (my group and I) handover to the three schools in the area that we worked with could present to the school principal the benefits (to the child and the school) of accommodating a child with a physical disability. The mental and emotional effects of exclusion would also form part of that presentation to substantiate why it is important to include children with physical disabilities in mainstream schools. Occupational Therapy based recommendations and accommodations will also be provided.
This weekâs blog topic revealed the agent of change I am and can be. Being forced to not only look at the SGDs but the targets set to achieve those goals provided me with a more in-depth understanding of the SDGs and challenged me to think of ways of how I can do my part. To contribute to the achievement of one target if not a goal as a whole a year is definitely going on my vision board.
 The journey continues

People Conducting Research - Sarah Hanieh
Taking the term âglobetrotterâ to heart, Dr Sarah Hanieh has travelled the world in her endeavour to provide support to others and fix the world as best she can. Sarah made the leap from being a practicing paediatrician to a post-doctoral Research Fellow in the Global Health Group in The University of Melbourneâs Department of Medicine at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity.
Sarahâs beginnings in science stem back to her father: when she was a school student, as she did her homework one day with her bedroom blinds in a tangled mess, her father took one look and reprimanded âSarah, when you see something wrong, fix itâ, and this motto stuck with her ever since. For a long time she wanted to study medicine and was on her way to becoming a surgeon â because there were ânowhere near enough female surgeonsâ â when she undertook a paediatrics rotation as part of her residency training year and realised that she loved it. After a few weeks of tossing and turning, she decided that paediatrics was the field she wanted to pursue and she trained as a paediatric infectious diseases physician. To gain experience working in remote areas, she worked with Indigenous communities in Darwin and Alice Springs, after which she joined MĂ©decins Sans FrontiĂšres (MSF, Doctors Without Borders), an international humanitarian medical organisation that delivers emergency medical aid to people in need, which was something she had always wanted to do. She worked with MSF in Liberia and Ethiopia, and came back to Australia a completely âchanged personâ in her perspective and the way that she practiced medicine (e.g. she questioned why she would order certain medical tests â were they all really necessary?). She enjoyed working in resource-poor settings as she not only had the opportunity to give to others, but also learned many valuable lessons â both personal and professional.
Continuing to travel the globe, Sarah took on a role as a research fellow with the University of Oxford based in Nepal for 6 months. She then worked for the Department of Essential Medicines and Pharmaceutical Policies (EMP) World Health Organization on their Expert Committee on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines, but eventually felt âisolated from realityâ and wanted to âget back into the fieldâ. She left her office job to take part in a malaria-in-pregnancy project for two and half years in Papua New Guinea with the University of Melbourne, following which she decided to return to her Australian roots and complete a Doctor of Philosophy investigating the maternal and early infant factors that contribute to chronic undernutrition in rural Vietnam.
After completing her PhD in 2015, (for which we was awarded both the Chancellors Prize and Deanâs Award for Excellence in a PhD thesis), Sarah received a National Health and Medical Research Council (NMHRC) Early Career Research Fellowship to continue investigating the mechanisms for maternal and child undernutrition in resource poor settings with Professor Beverly-Ann Biggs at the University of Melbourne. She is currently developing a predictive tool which will be packaged as a smart phone application (app) software to identify infants at high risk of stunted growth in resource-constrained settings, so that preventive measures can be implemented before it is too late to change the trajectory of a childâs growth. Her goal is to trial the app in a resource-poor setting next year with primary healthcare workers in the community. In addition, she is also exploring early life risk factors for undernutrition and inflammation in young Aboriginal children in Australia. She has recently completed a survey of all young children living in a remote Australian Aboriginal community to identify early life factors associated with poor growth, and to better understand the link between the gut microbiome and child undernutrition in this setting.
A childâs future growth is largely determined by conditions during their first 1000 days of life (the period from conception until two years of age). Adverse consequences due to undernutrition during this time may be irreversible, resulting in critical impairments to the future health, development and economic potential of both the individual child and the population. For example, a chronically undernourished child in the first two years of life is at risk of cognitive impairment, resulting in poorer educational outcomes and decreased income-earning capacity in adulthood. They also have a significantly increased risk of chronic diseases in adult life, such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Sarah is passionate about making a significant contribution to improving health and nutrition in resource poor settings during the first 1000 days of life, both at an international level and within Australia. Through the development of the early life predictive tool to she hopes to assist the development of an effective and sustainable strategy to prevent stunting in disadvantaged children, and in the longer term contribute to reducing the huge burden of chronic disease and early death in vulnerable populations.
Setting out to âfixâ the world one step at a time, Sarah also was selected to participate in Homeward Bound, a leadership program that aims to expand the influence and impact of women in making global decisions from backgrounds in STEM. As part of this program, Sarah recently participated in a year-long leadership development course and travelled with over 70 other women scientists from around the world in the largest all women scientist expedition to Antarctica in February this year â a continent dedicated to âscience and peaceâ. There, she learned three important lessons in leadership:
1.      Follow the right leader: a lesson learned from watching penguins, who followed a penguin who chose the right path to make it to dry land safely because a leader should always head in the direction the team need to go.
2.      Embrace the unknown: the unknown offers you the freedom to make choices. Many people donât have the opportunity or liberty to make their own decisions without other influencing factors. The expedition was bound for Rothera, a British scientific research station in the south, but their route was frozen over and the women were faced with a choice: to turn around and head back, or to take an alternative route that included sailing through rough, open seas â the unknown. Â
3.      Listen: the expedition leader and shipâs captain left it to the women to decide their path, and while most women voted to go into open waters to reach Rothera, a minority of women voted against it. Instead of going with the majority, the group empathised with the minority and made the decision not to go. (Although the weather cleared up and they were able to â[break] through the iceâ to continue on their once-in-a-lifetime journey.)
Sarahâs story âhas only just begunâ. She is well onto her way to making her mark on the world, both as an outstanding leader and as a researcher working to improve healthcare outcomes in remote areas. Sarah has found her niche in a âbig worldâ, and encourages everyone to find theirs too and grab all the opportunities that come their way. We look forward to seeing where in the world Sarahâs path takes her next.

Discuss the OT role in primary health care. Give examples of how you can use media as a tool for health promotion and prevention.
Occupational therapyâŠ.
Primary health careâŠ
Health promotionâŠ
Health preventionâŠ
When reading this blog topic, I saw so many terms and concepts that took me all the way back to first and second year. At a fourth year level, all the concepts mentioned in the blog topic should hit quite close to home; however the most familiar and relatable term (apart from occupational therapy - of course), was MEDIA. While performing my roles in my personal life as well as my university life, media is a tool which is always being utilized. The reality is that in today's technology-dependent world, most people have either heard of, visited or actively make use of media within their day to day lives (Levac & O'Sullivan). This brings me to the ultimate question - how can we, as occupational therapists, use the internet as a tool to create and provide healthful interventions, programmes and opportunities for service users and service providers who  offer or seek  primary health care.
As a student occupational therapist, it has been reinforced over years of training that being healthy requires far more than merely not having a disease or illness (WHO, 2016). In fact, according to (SAOT, 2016), primary health care is an approach to health care that looks closely at health promotion, prevention and overall wellness; It considers lifestyle factors such as housing, relationships, spiritual beliefs, income and workplaces in ensuring and improving an individual's health status. As occupational therapists, we are grounded in the belief that humans have an innate need to engage in occupations. According to the American association of occupational therapy, the path to health and well-being strongly correlates with participating in meaningful daily activities (AOTA, 2015) . Owing to our specific training and understanding of the complex interactions between people, the environment and occupations; we play a significant role in promoting healthful behaviors and preventing sickness and disease.
Working within the community over the past 4 weeks, my colleagues and I have offered health promotion and preventative care at an individual and organizational level. Â For instance, whether we were screening clients at the local clinic, doing home visits or addressing learners at the local school; we were providing a service which looked at promoting healthy, constructive behaviors while trying to prevent unhealthy, destructive behaviors. Â
Health promotion can be defined as a wide range of social and environmental interventions that are designed to benefit and protect people's health and quality of life. This is done not merely by focusing on treatment and cure, but also in the prevention of ill health (WHO, 2016). In both communities, the OT students developed and implemented a health promotion programme which targeted grade 7 learners. While most of the individuals were healthy, it was brought to our attention that some learners were highly exposed to substances and were at risk of developing substance use issues. In this programme, the focus of intervention was not solely spreading awareness  but also  in providing the learners with life skills and other coping mechanisms which would serve to maintain optimal health and prevent disease.  This integrates both health promotion and prevention levels of care (Mpanza, 2015).
In another health and wellness related programme implemented in both communities, the OT students targeted the elderly population; some of whom had chronic diseases such as diabetes, arthritis and cardiac conditions. In attempts to optimize health and wellness, the OT students ran a self-management programme which aimed to enable the "Gogo's" to participate in meaningful occupations and adopt appropriate, balanced daily routines. Â Though our programme provided awareness speeches on the management and prevention of different conditions, it also provided the service users with aerobic and zumba routines which facilitated physical and mental wellness.
Owing to the broad scope of the profession, occupational therapists are able to provide primary care to various populations of people in a multitude of ways. Whether it requires performing assessments for health risks, evaluating children for developmental delays, teaching strategies to incorporate healthy habits or even providing life skills training - we are well equipped and able! However, if there's one thing that I've learned throughout my four weeks on community block, it's that: Â IT TAKES A VILLAGE!!Â
While occupational therapists are well positioned to bring a distinctive skill set to primary care, I strongly believe that individual clients and the community as a whole would better benefit from an inter-professional collaboration. During the community block, we were able to work alongside NGO's and other valued members of the community which enabled our services to be relatable, effective and widespread. However, we did not have the opportunity to work alongside other health science disciplines which would have been useful in the planning and implementation of holistic health promotive and preventative programmes and intervention.
For instance, while screening children at the local crĂšche in community A, I noticed a baby who had developmental delays and it was reported that she aspirates whenever she eats. The care giver at the crĂšche was very concerned and did not know the cause or how to manage the aspirations. In providing feedback to the care giver, it would have been more effective to have a speech therapy student available who could more appropriately provide insight and management strategies. During fieldwork, UKZN health professional services would be better rendered if students across all health science faculties were placed within the communities along the same time frames. Not only would this be effective in providing holistic treatment to the various clients, but it would teach students the importance of multi-disciplinary work. Within my four years of training, I've noticed in so many hospital settings that rehabilitation services work in isolation. Not only do we do our clients a disservice in providing primary care, but we also limit ourselves as health care professionals in learning from one another and growing as therapists.
This brings me back to my original question: how can we, as occupational therapists, use the internet as a tool to create and provide healthful interventions, programmes and opportunities for service users and service providers who  offer or seek  primary health care.
While on community block, there were a lot of questions that I didnât have answers to. Often times, there were no other health professionals present for me to seek guidance from. For instance, when that care giver at the crĂšche asked me questions about the aspirating baby - I immediately whipped out my phone and did a Google Search! Â
"What would a speech therapist do with an aspirating baby"
"How do you explain aspirations in layman's terms??!"
Literally any question, as ignorant as it may have been, Google was readily available.
Apart from  providing me with medical insight in my times of need, I find media to be an excellent platform to get inspired, network and communicate with other health professionals. I have a pinterest account and I am a member of various Occupational Therapy groups on Facebook where OT's from across the world share their attitudes, values and beliefs about health care.  This is opportunistic for me as a student, as I am able to plan intervention using various platforms to inspire my treatment ideas.
Apart from assisting health care providers, media also allows benefits for healthcare users. According to Levac et al, social media allows for the widespread dissemination of information (Levac & O'Sullivan). In doing so, information can be made accessible and relatable to diverse populations with a simple click of a button! Many times, when I am sick and need to go to the doctor - I access media in order to gain some background knowledge into what symptoms I am experiencing.  In actual fact, sometimes media acts as my doctor; and it's not only me, I see my dad do it, my grandmother do it and sometimes, even my little cousin! Media is beneficial in health promotion and health prevention as it provides easy access to information  to diverse audiences.
Media has its own way of helping service users and service providers in health promotion and prevention strategies. It allows for therapists to attain information about treatment, and it allows for health care users to obtain insight into their conditions and management thereof. It also can provide a platform for accessible, continuous support to both service users and providers. However, it is important to remember that with benefits comes consequences.
Media plays an integral role in the lives of many, whether it be technology based or even in the local newspaper or magazines. It is crucial to remember that not everything we read and see in media is accurate and there to help us. Furthermore, socially disadvantaged  groups donât always have access to new media and social networks owing to language barriers, literacy disabilities or other socio-economic barriers.
In my opinion, media is a good tool which can be used in the primary health care sector - however, nothing beats personal, intimate, face to face health care! As it easy as it is to get connected - it is just as easy to get disconnected!

Benefits of Camping [List of 21 Benefits]
Benefits of camping! Many people are going to be surprised by reading this but this is a fact! Camping is an outdoor recreational activity, which is an outdoor activity which is mostly done in a natural setting. Letâs see, what are the benefits that person get from camping. Â
1. You breathe fresh air
Camping is a great way to be around mountains, forests, and many other natural terrains. It gives you a chance to breathe in the fresh air. It exposes you to green trees and forests. Fresh air is hard to find in cities and even indoors are not safe. More than half of the worldâs population lives in an urban area which is full of different types of pollution such as noise, air, water, and soil pollution. Toxic from these pollutants enter our body and cause many forms of diseases. You must have heard that you should add a plant in our office for health, now imagine yourself in between thousands of them. Research has shown that spending time in outdoor can improve your blood pressure, improve your digestion and makes your immune system stronger. According to EPA indoor pollutants are 2 to 5 times higher than outdoor. Â
Stats by EPA on indoor pollution Â
2. Reduces the stress levels
This is for camping is all about. An outdoor recreational activity to take a break from all those work which you do every day. Stress effect your health negatively by which you can fall ill. Whenever you have to think about an important matter or you are in stress then take a walk outside. Whenever you are camping you do not have to be in a certain time anywhere, no one interrupts you and you are not competing for anything like in the office. All these things calm down your mind. By research, at the University of Minnesota if you are in nature or even viewing nature then also it reduces stress and increases a good feeling. According to another research it was found that in school, hospital and even in the office if they do not have any visible nature it can bring an unhealthy impact on quality in life. There is stress with everything in this world such as family, friends and even in bills. So, next time you are camping donât forget to look at some strange plant or cool your feet in a stream or pond to reduce stress. Camping recharges you for the next round of everyday life. Â
3. Increases the vitamin D levels
Whenever you are camping one thing is sure that you will spend more time outside than normal days. Spending time outside means exposure to sunlight which is a cause of the production of Vitamin D in the skin. Vitamin D is needed in the body for stronger bones and absorption of calcium and phosphorous. Vitamin D is made in our skin when it absorbs ultraviolet rays from the sun. Nowadays taking supplements is normal whereas you can directly get it through natural sources. Research has shown that vitamin D supplementation is not a good substitute for actual UV exposure. There are lots of other health benefits of the sunshine vitamin. Â
Diseases prevented by Vitamin D Â
4. Powering up social bonds
How many time you spend quality time with your family or friends. Human is a social animal and our interactionâs with our loved ones is an excellent way to boost ourselves. By research by Dr. Teresa Seeman, it was found that socializing can help to increase your lifespan and delay problems related to memory. Nowadays, big companies are also choosing camping as a medium for developing social bonds between their employees. Camping is fun when done with our near ones or with whom we spend a lot of time. It is a great way to build a relationship or repairing the broken ones. We live in a busy age where people have a lot to do and sometimes they are inseparable from electronic gadgets. All these results in lose bonds between people. So, gather up and plan camping somewhere far away from a busy life. Â
5. Better eyesight
From childhood, we were told that too much sunlight (UV Rays) is bad for health but the new research is suggesting that UV light is important for the normal eye development in children. It can also help to prevent nearsightedness. Nearsightedness is called Myopia and is increasingly becoming common. Scientist believes that by 2020 the number of myopia cases can be as high as 2.5 billion which is one-third of the population. At first, the primary cause of myopia was thought of as staring at the screen. In a pilot study by the Center of Contact Lens Research in Canada, it was found that children who spent more time outside had a lower rate of developing myopia. Â
6. Physical Fitness
Camping is all about fun and you are not going to sleep there. You leave your sedentary lifestyle at home while camping and it also rewards you. First, you have to reach the campsite and find a good spot to pitch the tent. Preparing food and other stuff will keep your body engaged in physical work and donât forget to pick firewoods for a campfire. With all these, you are going to burn even more calories in fun activities. Remember hikers burn 120 to 300 calories per hour, bikers burn 300 to 500 calories per hour and fly-fishing can burn 200 calories per hour. So, which of these activities you are going to take part in. Â
7. Reduce your inflammation
Inflammation in the body is seen as unhealthy for the overall health. Inflammation is a natural body reaction to viral infection or sprained finger. Increase in inflammation is seen by unhealthy living and a poor diet. When it increases too much then it brings a wide range of diseases such as heart diseases, diabetes, and even cancer. In one study it was seen that people who spend their time outdoors or in nature shows reduced oxidative stress and reduction in pro-inflammatory levels. Â
8. You will sleep better
There is much reason for this. You are with your loved ones which brings a relaxing effect in your mind. You are not in your regular work and stress which is good for your brain. Humans have nearly always slept when the sun goes down and woke up with the rising sun. We have always lived with lanterns and candles but in the last hundred years, everything changed with electricity. Good sleep has a positive effect on your body, it can reduce inflammation, help you in staying alert and improves your cardiovascular health. During camping, you get a lot of sleep which fixes your body circadian rhythm due to the natural light source. Circadian cycle is referred to our sleep cycle which has evolved over thousands of years. You live in artificial light sources which is the reason for insomnia and poor sleep quality and quality. By a study at the University of Colorado, it was found that when you spend more time outside you melatonin levels become more balanced. So, to have a better sleep go camping and let nature fix your sleep cycle. Camping gives you a reason to be physically active that is why people have a good sleep in camping. Â
9. Decreases sedentary lifestyle symptoms
A sedentary lifestyle is the cause of many diseases that is why people are told to avoid it at any cost. People nowadays spend more time sitting than in any period of time in history. New technology and shift work are the cause of this kind of lifestyle. In a study, it was revealed that we spent nearly 87% of our time indoor and 6% of the time in the car. To tackle it, spend your maximum time being active and during camping, you are active for most of the time. Â
10. Improve your short term memory
In research by the University of Michigan, it was found that walking through Arboretum can increase your short term memory by 20%. They selected two groups of students the first group would walk through the city and the other would pass through an Arboretum. the group which passed through by arboretum showed better short term memory. Another thing is that you have less distraction while you are camping. This improves the concentration level and it also happens due to a reduction in the stress of an individual. It becomes easier for you to remember a task when your mind is not clouded by many things. Â
11. Fight seasonal affective disorder
The seasonal affective disorder is the feeling when the summer season is over and you have to wait 6 months for the spring to come. This creates a type of depression in people. The seasonal affective disorder starts around fall and extends throughout the winter season. According to keck medicine to fight it you have to get outside, exercise, meditate or take a vacation. All these things are done in camping. Â
12. Healthy eating
Healthy eating is one of the best things about camping unless you have packed the same snack and fast food. While camping you should try to make camping as natural as you can. Try to catch fish or try hunting. You can barbecue them or roast some potatoes or tomatoes. Campgrounds and wild area are also filled with trees with edible fruits or herbs. But be careful and do not eat any wild plant or fruit without basic knowledge. There is a great taste in food when you cook outside especially when you have caught the fish or have hunted down an animal. There is something about cooking over a campfire. Eat natural live natural without any chemical or preservatives. Â
13. Disconnection from technology
Technology is a boon for us but sometimes you need to go away from it. Near about two â thirds of the global population have cell phones today. Now you find people sticking with their phones and lost in the digital world. Even it is awkward when you find people staring at their smartphones on the dinner tables and not talking to anyone. In recent studies over cellphones and people, it has been seen that our habitual involvement with smartphones affects our ability to think, remember, regulate emotion and also our efforts on paying attention. During camping, you can avoid having any digital connections rather than the real and true connections with your family and friends. Keep a cellphone nearby you in case of an emergency but do not overindulge in it. Â
14. Life without an alarm clock
Think about it, when was the last time when you have slept without an alarm clock. It has become a part of your life. When you camp, you will not find that alarm clock near you and thatâs big news. Your life had worked simultaneously with the clock, now it's not. So, give a break, arise with the sound of chirping of birds and do whatever you want. Â
15. Learn new skills
This thing is true that you learn new things on every trip. It does not matter whether you know how to pitch a tent or to prepare food, all these things you will learn before you leave the campsite. We learn by our own mistakes and by seeing other mistakes too. There are also many books on survival skills which are really fantastic. By learning skills, you will be able to pitch tents, start a campfire without matchsticks or catch fish without a fishing rod. By learning all these you will need to pack your bags with fewer items. When you learn new tricks and skills itâs time to share them with others. Â
16. Educational opportunities for children
Learning for children is important and if they learn by playing then it becomes easy for parents. When they spend their time in camps they also learn new things. Scouting programs have become so popular because of this. Kids can learn things such as cooking, fishing, hiking, starting a fire, tying knots, first aid, pitching a tent and many other things. Â
17. Your mood will be better
Whenever you engage yourself in something new your mood immediately improves. That is the reason why people find traveling so good. When you do something new or something which you do not often do then your body becomes more relaxed. You are not there to make others happy than yourself and your dear ones, you are not in worry about your office schedule. You are spending your time with loved ones and you do not have to worry about getting early in the morning for any work. No stress and good times always enhance the mood. Â
18. Recharging yourself
Many times you do not feel right because you are burning from inside. You may feel that you do not want to do anything. All you want is to take a break and recharge yourself for life again. Human gets bored when they do any work which is repetitive. Camping is all about to re-ignite yourself, thatâs why so, many people take a break and choose camping. This is because you want to run away from your current work or life. This is also good for a relationship which needs a little boost. Camping can help you out because there will be no one except you two. A nice time to patch up the broken things. Â
19. Grow confidence
Camping is a nice way to develop confidence in you. Whenever you do something new you grow confidence in you which is also helpful in many other fields. You have to do something or the other it can be a big task of hunting or a small thing like roasting tomatoes. Humans have an inborn habit of comparing their task with other tasks, so, if you succeed in small things you will gain the confidence to accomplice bigger task. Arranging fresh water for yourself or others can be a quite challenging task and every time you succeed you are adding a bit of confidence. Never get disheartened by any failure, try again the same task till you finish it up according to your plan. Leaving it undone will not be good for your confidence level. Â
20. Family connections
Camping is a great way to strengthen your bonds between family members. Children never forget the good moments which they have gone through. Today, family ties between children and parents are not so strong as they were years ago. This is all because of our busy life. Parents are at work and children are busy in school or college. They all get time during holidays and even holidays are now like working days reserved for work at home. When you all will come home after camping you will find a much stronger attachment with each other. Â

The Best And The Worst About Quitting Smoking
If youâre one of the millions of people in the United States who are trying to quit smoking, you should feel proud of yourself. Admitting that you want to kick the habit â and committing yourself to the process â is the first step along your journey to a smoking-free life. But just remember that not all smoking cessation advice is created equal.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that more than 36 million Americans currently smoke â and that nearly 70 percent of them want to stop altogether. And not without good reason: Tobacco smoke contains hundreds of harmful chemicals, including about 70 known carcinogens. Each year, according to the CDC, cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths in the United States, and more than 16 million Americans live with a smoking-related disease. Not only can smoking cigarettes trigger lung cancer, but it can also contribute to infertility, heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and more.
Unfortunately, despite their desire to be smoke-free, many people find it difficult to quit. Blame nicotine, a particularly addictive drug thatâs found in tobacco products like cigarettes; after you stop using it, you can experience physical symptoms of withdrawal that include intense  cravings, headaches, and feelings of irritability, anxiety, increased hunger, and more. Indeed, because nicotine is so addictive, some people make multiple attempts at quitting before theyâre finally successful, says Eleana M. Conway, a nurse practitioner at the Lahey Health Tobacco Treatment Program in Burlington, Massachusetts.
All things considered, it's no wonder that people turn to things like dietary supplements or e-cigarettes to help them kick the habit â even though the evidence is slim that these products, among others, are effective smoking cessation aids.
The good news is that it is possible to stop smoking â and the sooner you quit, the better. Take heart in the fact that since 2002, the number of former smokers has outgrown the number of current smokers. Nor do you have to go it alone: If youâre trying to quit, there are many treatment options available that can help you stop smoking for good â you just have to know how to spot them. (According to data from the CDC, fewer than one in three people who tried to quit smoking in 2015 used âprovenâ treatments â and fewer than 1 in 10 of them were successful.)
Worst: Gradually Cutting Down on Cigarettes
It might sound logical, but Conway says this strategy hardly ever works. Still, she notes, "that doesnât mean people shouldnât try [it].â Because each cigarette is harmful to your health, any reduction at all is a good thing, she says. When someone is trying to quit, âwe meet them wherever they are in their journey,â Conway explains. âOur goal is to help people get to the next step, and then to the next step after that. The timing [to stop] has to be right.â
Just remember that the damage from tobacco (including an increased risk for cancer, heart disease, stroke, and more) doesnât go away until you quit completely. In a review of data published in BMC Medicine in October 2015, researchers from the United Kingdom concluded that âthe benefits [of smoking cessation] are only observed when it leads to permanent cessation.â
Best: Nicotine Replacement
Nicotine replacement therapies â in the form of gums, lozenges, inhalers, nasal sprays, and skin patches â have been shown to relieve cravings. "Often, we recommend using a combination of these nicotine replacements,â Conway says. âIt depends on what you need.â
For example, some people will pop a lozenge for a quick hit of nicotine (the effects kick in after 10 to 20 minutes) and also use a nicotine patch, which provides a steady stream of nicotine but takes about an hour to kick in. A healthcare provider can help you find the right mix, she says, and decide which products are best for you.
Worst: Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy, a complementary medicine that uses the imagination to help break bad habits or deal with stress, may seem like a popular smoking cessation aid, but the American Cancer Society (ACS) says that there isnât enough evidence to show that it works. Conway agrees with that assessment. âWe donât use it,â she says.
What could work, she says, are deep breathing and relaxation techniques, like meditation. Phone apps that promote mindfulness and smoking cessation are surging in popularity, in part because they help increase peopleâs awareness of cravings and offer ways to counter them, she says.
Worst: Low-Level Laser Therapy
Similar to acupuncture, low-level laser therapy (or cold laser therapy) is a type of treatment that uses low-intensity light to stimulate certain points on the body. Fans say that the light stimulates brain chemicals that can then help you quit smoking â research, however, doesnât. âWe have tried-and-true methods to help you stop smoking, but low-level laser therapy is not one of them," says Conway.
If youâre tempted to light up when people around you start smoking, try spending your time with your nonsmoking friends and family members. Even better, let them know what youâll be going through and how they can help encourage you to stay smoke free. If you canât avoid people who currently smoke, ask them not to do so in front of you.
Best: Prescription Medications
Prescription medications like buproprion and varenicline can help people quit by blocking the brain chemicals that make smoking pleasurable. And, says Conway, theyâre particularly successful when paired with nicotine replacement or behavior therapy.
Although the drugs arenât addictive, they do have side effects, including nausea and insomnia. While smokers should discuss the risks and benefits of these medications with their doctor, Conway tells people to keep this in perspective: âThere are few things as dangerous as smoking a cigarette,â she says. âSmoking is really scary stuff.â
Worst: Herbs and Dietary Supplements
Conway tells people to avoid herbs and supplements. âThey are not regulated [by the Food and Drug Administration] and have not been shown to be effective,â she says.
Worst: Electronic Cigarettes
Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, havenât been shown to be safe, says Conway, and could in fact be harmful, since they âtrickâ people into thinking that they are a good alternative to lighting up. âThereâs been a huge rise in use among high school and even elementary school students thinking these are safe,â she says. Â
Best: Help From the Experts
A good smoking cessation program is one of the best resources you can find, says Conway. Her program in Burlington â along with others elsewhere in the United States â coaches people to think about something they did successfully in the past, and then apply the same success principles to their attempts to quit smoking. The CDC says that treatments like cellphone-based programs, telephone counseling, and group sessions are all effective smoking cessation aids.

â`Adilâ, at the age of seventeen, refused to smoke a cigarette the first time it was offered to him. The second time he was invited to smoke, he hesitated. On the third occasion, he took the cigarette and smoked it to please his friends, though his mind recalled the many sermons hand lectured he had heard warning him against smoking. He never intended to keep smoking. Its taste was horrible and it had nothing to attract him. He thought it would be easy to quit at any time.
He was wrong. Soon, he was buying cigarettes for himself and sneaking around to smoke in order to avoid being seen by his family. For years, he tried to quit smoking for the sake of his health, and family, as well as the cost. By the time he graduated from college, he was still smoking. He was turned down by the woman he hoped to marry because he smoked.
Nicotine is addictive, and each puff on a cigarette send a shot of this chemical to the brain via the lungs. It acts faster than heroin which is taken intravenously. Chemical addictions can be overcome. There are even thousands of casual smokers.
It is a problem that our childrenâs minds are being targeted to get them smoking: the attractive packaging, the gold lighters, the compelling advertisements, the celebrity endorsements, the desire to rebel against parents, peer pressure, and a need to feel cool.
People who are addicted let themselves surrender to their addiction. Some will rationalise it due to all the stress in their lives. Their cigarette is all they have! Addiction takes over the mind and the will. The only thing that is heeded is the constant demand to smoke.
According to a French study, the average lifespan of smokers is sixty years while the average lifespan of non-smokers is sixty-nine.
A Saudi student won a scholarship to study abroad. He began to frequent nightclubs with the excuse that he was learning the local language and culture that way. He soon became an alcoholic. (Once he called me on the phone when he was drunk.)
Addiction is not limited to cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs. There is a long list of addictive behaviours, among them: pornography, masturbation, sex, shopping, computer games, the Internet, fashion and â most importantly these days â social media networks.
Addiction is a psychological and physical state which compels a person to repeat a certain behaviour constantly. This compulsion is driven by a desire to achieve certain mental effects and avoid other negative effects that come as a consequence of deprivation. This drive can lead to increased usage and cause debilitating physical, mental, and emotional consequences for the addict.
It is a uniquely human behaviour. Animals left on their own do not become drug addicts, unless they are placed in controlled coercive circumstances by people. For instance, mice tested in a laboratory in America were given a drink laced with a narcotic. They refused to drink it until the drink was also dosed with a large quantity of sugar.
People seek after happiness and contentment. If they cannot find it in the real world, they look for it elsewhere. This is especially true when people have a dim view on their prospects in life. It is therefore important for people to have opportunities for honourable work, a sufficient income, social justice, and legitimate forms recreation. People who cannot cope with reality seek to escape from the real world.
Addictions are serious chronic, and progressive illnesses that can be fatal. This fact does not exempt the addict from the responsibility of getting into that situation in the first place. Diabetes, for instance, can come about as a consequence to an addiction to sugary foods.
A man starts drinking in order to relax. He considers himself an exception to the rule because he never seems to get drunk, but just experiences a slight effect. Then, he gets into the habit of taking a drink at the start of the day. Then, he starts taking drinks to placate âchillâ that comes over him. His drinking increases and increases until he stops worrying about anything else in his life except to lay the blame at othersâ feet.
â`Atiyyahâ would have been a good man, if it were not for his drug habit. He had an excellent relationship with his family and friends, However, his condition progressed until his wife had to start protecting his reputation and covering for him while he stayed up all night staring at the television and smoking. Whenever the joint fell from his hand due to his delirium, she would rush over to extinguish it and prevent a fire. When he came to his senses again, he would curse her as if she had done something wrong and then light another.
Do you think she was doing the right thing? Would it not have been better if she had let him face his own problems so he would see the error of his ways and seek treatment? His children came to observe his behaviour. One of them said: âDaddy is always getting pills and drinks, but we never get bicycles and toys to play with. We donât even get new clothes and school supplies like all the other kids.â His twelve-year-old son had to learn to assume the household responsibilities of a thirty-five-year-old, as well as arrange transportation from his intoxicated father and look after his younger siblings. He had to support them emotionally while they faced their motherâs grief and their own deprivation.
Addictive Compulsions
In the past, adolescents used to complain about masturbation and how they felt compelled to practice it to avoid falling into something far more serious, or simply to relieve their sexual tensions. The problem was not with the act itself, since it is certainly a better option than fornication. Rarely is a young person, under the pressures of sexual desire, able to forgo the practice entirely. Scholars of Islamic Law differ about it. It is most likely a practice that is disliked in Islam, or at most ambiguous in its sinfulness, especially for a person who fears falling into a more serious sin.
The real problem lies in it becoming a habit practiced even in the absence of sexual desire. The young person is looking for some amusement and starts using this as its means. This leads to viewing pornography to enhance the experience and sometimes to remote interactions with other people via social media, and even to indecent exposure.
In the United States, up to fifteen percent of the population are affected by impulse control disorders. The most serious of these are: sexual compulsion, kleptomania, compulsive shopping, and pathological gambling.
In their book Stop Me Because I Canât Stop Myself: Taking Control of Impulsive Behaviour, Dr. Jon Grant and Dr. S.W. Kim present many tragic stories about the victims of these disorders.
Most of these disorders are kept hidden from view. Like many other mental illnesses, they are sometimes caused by structural or behavioural defects in the afflicted peopleâs minds, for which there is sometimes a genetic propensity. In some cases, they develop as the result of emotional problems, unstable homes, or coping mechanism for personal crises.
Regardless of how it occurs, addiction is a trap that robs its victims of lifeâs joy. It causes people to undervalue family and the other blessings in their lives. They lose the ability to enjoy normal pleasures like eating, drinking, and good conversation. It extinguishes hopes, dreams and ambitions. It drags people from dignified lives into a purgatory of base impulses and indifference.
Our willpower is greatest at the start of the day. As time passes, it becomes exponentially more difficult to resist temptation.
How Can You Tell if You Are a Twitter Addict?
Twitter has shown itself to be more addictive than smoking, according to a study conducted by the Chicago School of Business on 200 subjects ranging in age from 18 to 85 in Germany over the course of seven days. Most of the volunteers found it more difficult to keep themselves away from their Twitter accounts than they did trying to refrain from smoking.
Twitter addiction has a number of signs. You find yourself using it while you are at work, at school, or at the mosque. Another sign is that you engage in it while eating, which is a proven cause of obesity, hypertension, and high cholesterol. Other signs include nervousness, insomnia, and reduced or negative social interactions. For instance, a teenage boy who only sees his family at mealtime and is irritated about it could well be suffering from an addiction. Another sign is sleeping with your device at hand and waking from sleep periodically during the night to check your account.
I personally tried to kick the Twitter habit. I developed a new habit: a perpetually renewed resolve to avoid opening Twitter when there was no good reason to do so.
For some people, Twitter has gone from being a means to connect people to a way of driving them apart. People have gotten divorced due to inappropriate interactions between one of the spouses with members of the opposite sex.
Students have failed in school because of the distractions posed by Twitter.
With enough willpower, and Allahâs help, you can wean yourself off of Twitter. It is important to engage in alternative activities, like family visits and outings with friends.
Your use of social media should be redirected to keeping in touch with family members, like keeping a family-only group account on WhatsApp.
There are indications that people who were not previously in the habit of reading now read the equivalent of 150 pages a day. This is a lot of raw information, but what use is it if it has no focus?
Use of social media applications needs to be kept under control, with set time constraints. Parents should monitor their childrenâs use.
Addiction and Imagination
If you are addicted to something, then your imagination is captivated by it. It replays the act over and over again when you are not committing it. However, you can use that same imagination to help you overcome your addiction.
Imagine what comes afterwards, when you have done the deed you are addicted to. This can give you pause.
Perform good deeds that can provide you with good memories. Pray Jumu`ah at the mosque, and then spend some time afterwards getting to know your fellow worshippers. Offer a voluntary fast. Wake up at night to offer prayers or offer the DuhÄ prayer in the latter part of the morning. Read the Qurâan from beginning to end. Get to know some religious people. Take a walk through town looking for people in need of charity and assist them. Become a volunteer for a community project. Reconnect with an old friend by phone.
When you do something wrong, make it your habit to compensate for it by doing something good in equal measure. If you squandered an hour in doing something frivolous, then spend another hour engaged in worship. If you travelled somewhere to do something wrong, take another trip to do a wholesome deed. If you spent a thousand dollars on something sinful, spend another thousand in charity.
To counter a bad habit you are having trouble kicking, develop a good habit and stick to it with equal tenacity until it displaces the bad one.
Your imagination recalls to your mind the pleasant sensations connected with your addiction, even if what you are addicted to is something sinful. Indeed, Satan likes to beautify sin and make it seem appealing. Therefore, you need to mobilise your imagination in a positive way. Imagine yourself as a pious person whose prayers are answered and who is indeed a blessing for the people around you. See yourself as a person of knowledge and wisdom who is a role model for your children.
Remove the Cancer or Boost Immunity?
The cure to addiction is not found in theoretical solutions or the strength of ideas. What matters is whether such a solution is a practical option for the addict.
It is easy to say: âGet involved in something else?â But what? And who is supposed to provide the alternative? Parents? Society? The Government?
Everyone is busy with their own concerns and spare time is at a premium wherever you look. Therefore, addiction remains a major problem.
Retirement is bad news for an addict. The chance to be alone becomes more frequent and indeed can be realised at any time.
What affect does health have on addiction? The addict forgets the fatigue and stress. Addiction makes the addict unconcerned about life and death, as long as the craving is fulfilled.
Addicts can deny they have a curable illness. They see themselves as victims of circumstances beyond their control. It is easier to wallow in despair. Some addicts retreat behind a fantasy, imagining they are under a curse, or that they are possessed. Others blame their circumstances. They point their fingers at their families, their economic situation, their social status, or their mental health and since these things are not going away, neither can their addiction. Despair simply reinforces the addictive habit.
At the same time, some addicts fail to remedy their addiction because they focus exclusively on the habit itself while ignoring the circumstances surrounding it and reinforcing it.
In the Qurâan, the chapter entitled âThe Defraudersâ (al-MutaffifÄ«n) can be seen as a discussion on fighting addiction. This is because fraud is not an isolated act, but a habit of those who are rich or advantaged selfishly taking from the poor or disadvantaged their due.
Allah says: âSurely the record of the wicked is preserved in Sijjin. And what can explain to you what SijjÄ«n is? It is a book that is fully inscribed.â [SĆ«rah al-MutaffifÄ«n: 7-9]
The title of this record, Sijjīn, refers to a state of being imprisoned, since those who are addicted to wrongdoing and defrauding others are indeed imprisoned by their addiction.
Allah then says: âNay! Most surely on that Day they shall be debarred from their Lord.â [SĆ«rah al-MutaffifÄ«n: 14] This describes the mental and emotional state of the addict who continually commits sin and repeatedly succumbs to wrongdoing. This deprives them of the sweetness of faith and of a strong connection with their Lord in this world, and being debarred from His grace in the Hereafter.
Faith inspires the heart, makes the believer more aware, and creates a strong emotional impulse that awakens and sustains the believerâs willpower. Allah says: âDo they not think that they will be resurrected to face a tremendous day, the day when (all) humanity will stand before the Lord of the Worlds?â [SĆ«rah al-MutaffifÄ«n: 4-6]
The Qurâan teaches us that we should not despair, even if we face repeated failures. Allah says: âHas the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth?... Know that Allah gives life to the earth after it is lifeless. We have made clear to you the signs; perhaps you will understand.â [SĆ«rah al-HadÄ«d: 16-17]
Likewise, Allah gives life to our hearts when we remain steadfast in supplication and do not weary of returning to Him.
Addicts need the company of good people who can help them along. They can also benefit from the experience of former addicts who triumphed over their addiction. There are a number of books written by such people that can be of real help. However, you should be wary of self-help books that promise to help you overcome your addiction in a quick an easy way. They are no more honest than the books that claim they can teach you foreign language in two weeks.
Many people believe their mistakes expose their weaknesses. They do not wish to admit that they are weak, so they refuse to acknowledge their error. However, if a mistake is weakness, then admitting to it is strength.
When we resolve to change and make it clear to ourselves that we have a real problem to overcome, we have started on the road to a real life change. Our dissatisfaction with our present circumstances and our looking forward to something better is what helps us shore up the inner strength we need to prevail.
Who do people think it is so hard to quit smoking? It is because they fixate on what they are giving up and not on what they are actually doing. When you think that you are âgiving upâ smoking, it encourages you to keep up the bad habit. When you go abroad on a vacation, you do not mention to the travel agent that you are âgiving upâ your home country, but mention your desired destination.
I know someone who used to smoke sixty cigarettes a day and then gave it up abruptly. The way ahead is to think positively and not focus on the difficulty. Focus on triumphing over your addiction in one of two ways:
1. Gradual reduction. This can be achieved through the famous Japanese practice of Kaizen, a practice of continuous improvement which was introduced to the world by Masaaki Imai in his book entitled Kaizen: The Key to Japanâs Competitive Success. 2. Abruptly giving up the addiction by a sheer force of will. This is the approach advocated by Dr. Alan Carr in The Easy Way to Stop Smoking?. He disagrees with the gradual approach to overcoming addiction, since he sees that each reduction causes a renewed and increased sensation of reward whenever you have a smoke, and this is counterproductive to success.
What matters is to resolve to change and to be serious about it. Imagine that you have been stricken with an illness whereby you have choice between kicking your habit or dying.
The desire to smoke remains strong for about three weeks. It is like having a sense of hunger for a cigarette. Then there is a moment of inspiration where you look up at the sky and see that it looks more beautiful than ever. This is the moment when your mind is finally freed from the conditioning under which it had been slaving.
It is essential to seek Allahâs help through supplication. Allah will bring about for us what is even better and greater than what we hope for.
-Sh. Salman Al-âOdah.

Education
San Diego schools need more nurses and counselors, educators say
When a student shows up at school sick, when a student has an emotional breakdown or a seizure during class, when a family needs to know where to find medical care or housing or food, chances are they will turn to their school nurse or counselor for help.
School nurses and counselors are charged with keeping children healthy and safe so they are able to learn and enjoy school. Educators say those jobs have never been more important than during this pandemic, as students cope with the physical and mental trauma of closed schools, COVID-19 and other struggles.
School nurses and counselors say they can do only so much, because they have long been understaffed in public schools.
In San Diego Unified dozens of elementary schools get a counselor only one day a week. And itâs rare for a school to have a nurse five days a week; many nurses and counselors are assigned to three schools or more.
San Diego Unified educators say they expect that will finally change, now that it appears the state will be giving public schools billions more in funding for the next few years, thanks to high state revenues.
âWeâve been pushing for it for years,â said Kisha Borden, president of the San Diego Unified teachers union, which also represents 115 nurses and 245 counselors.
âA lot of times the district has said, âOh, we donât have the money for it.â So now weâre hoping that excuse has been eliminated.â
Generally San Diego Unified allocates its nurses and counselors to each school using staffing ratios based on how many students are enrolled.
That means 93 of the districtâs 108 elementary schools have enough students to qualify for a school nurse only one day a week, according to a Union-Tribune analysis of school enrollment data.
Most of the districtâs middle schools get a school nurse two days a week, and most of its high schools get one at least three days a week.
A school would have to have at least 2,367 students to qualify for a full-time nurse five days a week, which is the case for two of the districtâs more than 170 schools: San Diego High and Henry High.
The district said it sometimes provides nurses more days than a schoolâs allocated amount.
When it comes to counselors 76 elementary schools have enough students to qualify for a counselor one day a week. Only two elementary schools qualify for a counselor two days a week.
No elementary school has enough students to get a school nurse or a school counselor for more than two days a week.
San Diego Unified gives each middle school one counselor for every 481 students and each high school one counselor for every 459 students, ratios that are on par with national averages.
But according to the American School Counselor Association, thatâs not enough. It recommends a ratio of one counselor for every 250 students.
It is possible for a school to have a nurse and a counselor five days a week, but the schools would have to use money from their discretionary budgets to pay for it. Schools spend discretionary money on a variety of things, from gifted programs to extra school supplies to reducing class sizes.
San Diego Unified Board President Richard Barrera said every elementary school should have a full-time nurse and a full-time counselor, five days a week. He added that the district should have twice as many nurses and counselors for middle and high schools as it does now.
The district has not hired more nurses and counselors because it historically has not received enough funding from the state, he said.
âWith both nurses and counselors, weâve always known that weâre understaffed,â he said. âThe nursing ratios and the counseling ratios are nowhere near what they should be.â
Barrera said that expected increases in ongoing state funding would give the district the chance to increase staffing, but it will take time to figure out how to allocate nurses and counselors where student needs are greatest and to determine what nursesâ and counselorsâ responsibilities should be.
For example, he said, the first priority for additional counselors should be shoring up studentsâ social and emotional health, rather than their academic credits and grades.
âI donât think this can happen overnight,â Barrera said of adding more nurses and counselors. âI think it will take maybe one to two years to do carefully.â
Taking care of kids
The list of duties for a typical school nurse was already lengthy and growing before the pandemic, some nurses said.
School nurses help students take daily medications, manage studentsâ diabetes, keep track of immunizations, help write and manage special education plans, conduct hearing and vision screenings, intervene when students are frequently absent, and more.
They take care of emergencies, which could be anything from a student bleeding to a collapsing runner in P.E. class, said Mary Gantz, a nurse who has worked in San Diego Unified schools for 12 years.
Nurses also train other school staff on how to manage emergencies â for days when the nurse is not there.
âEmergencies do happen, and everyone is hoping that when they do, the nurse is on site,â said Gantz, who works two days a week at Sessions Elementary, two days a week at Pacific Beach Middle, and one day a week at Pacific Beach Elementary.
During the pandemic, school nurses have coordinated COVID testing, given COVID vaccinations to teachers, manned school COVID isolation tents, and helped conduct contact tracing to see who has potentially been exposed to COVID.
School counselors also juggle a variety of tasks. They teach students about mental health, kindness, empathy, positive affirmation and how to recognize and manage their emotions. Counselors intervene when a student expresses thoughts of suicide, doesnât attend school, is having trouble with other students, or is having a crisis.
During the pandemic, counselors made numerous phone calls to check on students and their families at home, visited studentsâ homes when they didnât log on to distance learning, and helped families work out technology or internet issues.
Now that schools are open again, counselors are providing grief counseling to students who have lost family to COVID or who have anxiety about being back at school.
Adria Bogart, who works at four schools counseling students with autism, said she has noticed changes in her students since coming back to school.
âWe used to be able to talk about college or careers, or the transition to high school, or how great itâs going to be when you try out to be a cheerleader,â she said. âAnd now the conversations are around being safe and feeling comfortable, and âmy dad yells a lotâ, and âmy grandpa died from COVIDâ.â
When schools were closed, Bogart said, a parent called the school for help because the family was being evicted. Bogart and other school staff helped show her that she had legal protection from being evicted during the pandemic.
Sometimes families will go to a school nurse for help finding medical care, because they donât have a medical provider, nurses said.
âWeâve been that trusted resource throughout the whole (pandemic) and one of the few constants in the lives of our families,â Gantz said.
Because she works at four different schools, Bogart spends all the time she can building relationships with students at each school, to make them feel safe. Sometimes sheâll co-teach a teacherâs class or tutor kids. Sometimes sheâll run a lap with students at P.E., because she knows P.E. can be intimidating to some of her students.
She also teaches educators how to intervene with difficult students in a way thatâs more supportive than disciplinary.
Mariam Roashan, a counselor at Mason Elementary, said she has been holding grief counseling sessions to help students process the pandemic, give them a chance to talk through their emotions, and let them know that itâs okay to feel what theyâre feeling.
âTheyâre in a different developmental growth milestone,â she said, âso theyâre not really understanding what just happened, why were we out of school for so long, why is everyone in my family so sad, why are my mom and dad arguing.â
Last school year was the first time in Roashanâs 14-year career as a San Diego Unified counselor that she worked at only one school. Thatâs because her school chose to spend the money for a full-time counselor, she said. Before that, for many years Roashan worked at three schools at a time.
Itâs hectic working at multiple schools, Roashan said, because counselors donât have as much time as they need to do proactive work with students, to help prevent crises from happening.
âYou just feel like youâre pulled in so many directions, and you donât really have a chance to have a comprehensive school counseling program with just a day, or day and a half, at a school site,â Roashan said. âRather than doing proactive work, youâre doing responsive work. Youâre there for responding, really, to crises that happen on a daily basis.â *Reposted article from the UT by Kristen Taketa, June 5, 2021
