Yeah, besides what happened with Cyberpunk (ie reviewers were basically lying about the state the game was in) I have also had buyers remorse every time I’ve preordered.
Particularly with DAI (which, in case it wasn’t clear, I preordered) I wasn’t a huge fan of how most of the gameplay was “go to this location and *hand gestures vaguely* do something.” The gameplay and the story felt disconnected from one another. A lot of the better writing was wedged away in codexes. The main story completely deviated what was hinted at in DA2 and Asunder. I understand coming in with expectations will almost always result in disappointment, and that it’s unrealistic to often have such expectations. But I also think that a lot of the stuff that disappointed me was a lot more interesting than what was actually in the game (like a focus on the dynamics of the mage/templar war remains hypothetically more interesting than focusing on whatever Corypheus was doing). It seemed like the writers played the whole thing safely to appeal to a wider audience. Which is like, whatever, live and learn and whatnot.
(Sidenote: apologies if it sounds like I’m shitting on DAI. I know people really love this game and there are things I like about it too. It’s just that on launch the disappointment hit me hard, and at the time people were really invested love with this game. So I’ve kind of sat on my feelings about it for almost a decade. Please don’t take what I say about it personally, I don’t want any smoke lol.)
And from what very little I’ve seen and heard about DA4, I really think that there’s going to be a number of other people having similar disappointments about this game in relation to the end of DAI, and more specifically Trespasser. I feel the disappointment will be more pronounced in Lavellan players who were invested in Solas’ characterization and character motivations as a lot of them on here have been hyperfixating off and on on him for almost for 10 years straight.
Tho, for the record, I don’t expect some weird controversy to hit the game on launch, or even expect it to do poorly review-wise. I probably should given EA and BioWare’s track record, and some part of me does feel that way. But I think that given DAI was delayed by several months from when it was supposed to come out, it appears that the Dragon Age team doesn’t really have any qualms about being upfront with EA about needing more time to work on the game. I also think that after what happened with Mass Effect Andromeda, they’re probably more inclined to just give them more time rather than letting the game launched unfinished.
But also: I am being optimistic, and was also someone who preordered Saints Row 5 so *shrug*.
other folks not picking up DAV day one: what's holding you back
not a cop 😭 just nosy and curious to hear how others are feeling
