wanted connections,
because i feel so bad approaching people without concepts in mind i’m gonna rattle off a bunch of connections that would make sense in scar’s past ofc if anyone wants one hmu but i’mma use this and send it to people i’m plotting with because i’m mf braindead constant help.
song inspo.
( open / m/f/nb ) enemies, post malone. - the enemies trope, everyone’s gotta have at least one. scarlet is sweet to everyone of course but there are people she doesn’t get along with. especially if they crossed her friends. they really could not like each other for something as petty as scar getting hurt over something stupid that your muse doesn’t even know about ( i.e. what they thought was a joke and she took to heart, cancelling plans. ) -- she’s a sweetheart, but she’s got a temper for sure.
( open / m/f/nb ) good together, SHY martin. - the exes trope, this wouldn’t be like the first relationship. rather, this person and scar knew each other before she went to rehab. possibly someone she spiraled with during that year or maybe someone she knew before it all went down. they left before she really fell into her addiction, but when she got clean they started coming around again. the only problem being that things are so, so much different now. and despite trying to release it scar holds anger toward them, and they hold anger toward her. probably the only person who knows scar’s past without any sort of sugar coat. the only person who can get her really, really angry. also the only person she can comfortably sleep with, because deep down she loves and trusts them.
( open / m/f/nb ) lighter, miley cyrus. - the best friend trope. this person and scar just recently met, sharing a love for driving just to clear their minds. it could have been a party they met at and decided to ditch, or maybe one saw the other in a state of crisis and just knew. now, once a week they take a drive. sometimes, they talk the whole time. sometimes, it’s quiet. sometimes they’re screaming the lyrics to their guilty pleasures. but every time, they leave with the understanding that this is their happy place. outside of this they don’t interact much. whether it’s their busy schedules or just finding it awkward unless they’re in the car is something we can talk about but it can definitely be a sweet and just quietly supportive friendship.
past/present inspo.
( open / f/nb ) first year dorm-mate. this is scarlet’s third year, so possibly another third year who shared the same dorm as her during their first run. they’d know about how strict her parents were, but it’s unclear if she told them why she was under such a cautious eye. it’d be sweet if they did know about what happened, maybe they had a night where scar just broke down. now they have a close connection or maybe oh shit maybe it’s on the rocks because scar doesn’t feel super comfortable now that they know so much about her and what she’s been through. could be an angsty we-were-best-friends-now-you-leave-the-room-any-time-i-enter friendship.....
( open / m/f/nb ) the first relationship. scarlet has cut off all forms of dating now but in the past i’d really like an ex who she thought she could be with, really thought was something special, but she broke it off shortly after getting together because she got scared. they would have never slept together, and that could have been a factor into any tension. but, the twist being it’s all her. the fact she couldn’t get intimate with them being a topic she would bring up a lot, challenging them. along with her refusing to tell them why she was so anti-being-touched.
( open / m/f/nb ) nightly check in. while scar does her usual rounds for people during the morning. dropping off care packages and being everyone’s personal mom. this person is a special case scenario. every night before she goes to her room, she stops by theirs. checking in, helping with anything they may be working on. along with that every night she brings the same three items. their favorite snack, a bottle of water and a movie to watch. this person is incredibly important to her. and it might be oblivious to them both, but she has feelings for them. big mood slow burn.
( open / m/f/nb ) comedy regular. one of the many things she does in her free time is comedy, joining the comedy club to just have a good time and a good laugh, she’s found herself really drawn to the story telling that comes with it. so, one friday night she found a comedy club and began preforming. this person is the only person who knows about the show ( other than teddy. ) and found her entirely by accident. we can talk about if she knows they catch her friday nights. mayb one night she’s not there and they’re like hey wtf and she’s like i KNEW I SAW YOU GOD WTF mood . vibes .
( closed / @virtuosc ) well, it was gonna be a puff piece. since she is in the journalism club i imagine... they have some sort of paper maybe not but imagine your muse and scar started talking because she was gonna write an article about whatever they are interested in ( sports, photography, other clubs ) but then she kept asking the right questions to start to get to know them. then the puff piece became just story telling. them telling her stories, her telling them her own. and they’re still meeting for coffee every saturday, despite her not thinking about the article in weeks.

The Man from Utah, Chapter 5, Draft 1, Part 3
As they kept driving straight, Liam was grateful he wasn’t getting too many looks. He was used to it, with his Utan face, but it made him realize he would have to accessorize to blend in. As for Daniel, well, he was still thinking about what could be done there.
On either side of the street, people were playing all kinds of games set up by folks in suits that managed to be both gaudy and ratty. They ranged from simple card games to an alarming amount of knife-based games, from Five-Fingered Fillet to throwing them at wheels to simple muggings.
Liam decided it’d be best to keep his eyes on the road for now, maybe check the signage. One such sign mentioned Generation 03 Limited Models, and there was an image of a Nevadean that looked like Dan, with a wrench tweaking various parts, and different hats being tried on.
Keeping that in mind, he finally made it to a clothing shop, the red neon lights nearly blinding him as he pulled into three parking spaces. To be fair, it wasn’t like anyone else was parked any better, and at least his ride wasn’t on fire.
Leaving his helmet on the driver’s seat, Liam hopped out, looking either way before clambering out. No one was looking his way, so he hurried under the “Andy’s” sign and through the door before that changed.
“I’ll be right back,” he said into a walkie talkie. “We’re gonna see if we can blend in.”
Dan was silent. Hopefully, this was just him trying to keep hidden.
Looking around, he concluded this store had everything he would need. Mannequins, freakish with their plastic arms, did their best to promote the latest fashions everywhere, but were hardly given a glance by Nevadeans. They were too preoccupied with looking at themselves in mirrors, or loudly judging the color of a knapsack, to be looking at anything or anyone else.
Liam also noticed the odd shelving. There was a single neat row, with little stands like spikes holding hats and gloves, distributed evenly on the long table against the rounded wall. Shirts hung from similar spikes on a beam above, all around. Two windows on either side gave an idea of the truth of this building – they were playing dress-up inside a whale’s skull.
Liam cringed, but he had to persist. A clean smock would be in order, maybe a jumpsuit instead. After that, he’d definitely need some kind of face covering, and maybe a new pair of gloves. He managed to come out with just a single remark from the cashier, thankfully. Not only was he uncomfortably striding in a hoodie, cloth mask and futuristic visor, but he had a bag full of more comfortable clothes for later.
“So,” Liam said, jumping back into the driver’s seat, “I saw some business that did something for G03-LMs, so maybe they’ll have something to help you blend in?”
He could hear Dan shift, metal scraping against metal behind him.
“Very well. But we shall express caution, I hope.”
“Tell you what: I’ll be going in first, just to make sure. You just stay here, and I’ll let you know, okay?”
“Do not go unarmed.”
“I won’t.”
With a holstered machine gun and a cool blue glow in his visor, he walked over to the G03-LM place. Along the way, several people wanted him to play their shell, card, or knife games, but they could be safely ignored. He passed a couple of Agents, and was sweating nearly as many bullets as his gun carried, but they didn’t even look at him as they passed by, looking for something or someone. One even stopped to play a game or two.
Finally, Liam had made it to his destination, and he couldn’t help but feel intimidated by all the giants on either side, standing motionlessly with yellow-toothed grins. Even worse, there was some kind of “MAG” line down the hall, with specimens that dwarfed G03-LMs, and heads with all sorts of modifications and distortions.

The 2018 EdSurde Annual Special: Surgecoin, EduWands and Other News Not Fit for Print
Happy first of April—a day where the joke’s on all of us.
It used to be that people waited until today to unleash their pranks. But some companies are jumping the gun. Duolingo got a head start with Brewolingo, “craft beers from America's Owliest Brewery to help you get fluent in any language” and which contain “a special blend of Owlcohol and Owlgorithms.” Chegg appears to have borrowed a page from Duolingo’s previous shenanigan for the Osmosis Pillow, which takes “memory foam” to another level.
And us? We offer you EdSurge Mews, your one-stop shop for felicitous feline entertainment—and your new destination whenever your index finger misses the “N” key when searching for EdSurge News
Oh wait, you were actually looking for the news? We’ve got you covered. Below are the finest collection of stories you’ll never see on any other day, and which have been brewing in our heads over the course of 2018 in between too many cups of coffee, indecipherable email pitches, 1:1 meetings, product sprints and the occasional but unavoidable sparring on Twitter. Here goes...
CONTROL+ALT+DELETE: In the biggest blockbuster deal that the industry has seen since Prussia was on the map, ControlSchool merged with AltSchool and DeleteSchool. Financial terms were not disclosed, although the entire education operating system was reset as a result of the transaction. Back to the drawing chalkboard, rows of desks, pencils and, yes, the Prussian schooling model, everybody.
BETSY’S CHOICE: True to her suggestion made during a botched interview on “60 Minutes,” Education Secretary Betsy DeVos decided to intentionally visit an underperforming school. “Look, I just made a school choice,” she was caught on camera saying. “See how easy that was?”
INTRODUCING THE MEGACREDENTIAL: Last year saw the emergence of several new short-form college degrees known as microcredentials. But one traditional college is going the other direction. Princeton is planning what it has dubbed a “megacredential,” which will take about twice as long as a traditional PhD to complete (so, about 14 years). “If getting a doctorate is like running a marathon, this is an ultramarathon,” said the university’s graduate dean. Since academic jobs are hard to come by these days, this program is designed to keep students out of the workforce longer, so that maybe the market will be better by the time they emerge from their schooling.
TREMENDOUS DEAL! BUY NOW! In an effort to solve the never-ending debate over whether education technology “works,” EdSurge is creating “Surgecoin,” the first cryptocurrency tied to product efficacy. We will use some arcane technology called “blockchain” and distributed ledgers to validate that education software works. (Just don’t ask how this works. The whitepaper is forthcoming, trust us.)
EdSurge will also hold a presale ICO with a special discount for early buyers: spend $10,000 and get 20 percent more Surgecoin! (Unfortunately, we are only accepting Dogecoin as payment for the time being.) Don’t dawdle—give in to your urge to buy some Surge. It’s the copper to Litecoin’s silver; the water to Petro coin’s oil.
— Also on Surgecoin’s product roadmap is a hard fork to create Splurgecoin, which can be used to pay our hungry, hungry staff writers. Please, if you like our reporting, donate Splurgecoin to feed your friendly EdSurgents!
A COLLEGE WITH NO PROFESSORS, OR STUDENTS? While not yet mainstream, college upstarts like 42 Silicon Valley are paving the way for a new era in education—one where instructors are no longer part of the picture. Now, an even newer project, called Knowledge Shop, is going a step further: No students. Or, as the marketing bumf points out: “No teachers. No courses. No classes. No credits.” It’s actually just an online marketplace. Okay fine, it’s Amazon.
LOST AT C: The study-abroad program, Semester at Sea, has rolled out a program for online and distance learners. Students are virtually beamed onboard a cruise via a robot, which has a screen and camera to give students at home a sense that they are roaming around the ship. Tragedy struck this week, however, when one robot toppled overboard. The student controlling the robot remotely is calling the event a “freak accident,” and is asking for a grade boost as amends.
LINGUA FRANCA: Some say coding should count as a foreign language. But why stop there? Why not make coding the de facto language? The founder of Codemunication foresees a future where even verbal communication will be done in code. “It’s the only true objective language,” he says, “as objective as Objective C.” Or, as he asserts:
int main(void) { NSLog(@"It’s the only true objective language, as objective as Objective C. "); return 0; }
BETTER BUBBLE WRAP: Looking for new ways to boost your children’s resilience without having to leave your helicopter? Look no further than Better Bubble Wrap. Constituted from recycled Chromebooks, it literally wraps around students and fastens with a magsafe closure. Kids can then tackle dangerous undertakings like climbing a tree, learning linear equations and losing a spelling bee without risk of broken bones or bruised egos.
SWISH AND CLICK: Last week saw fresh announcements from Apple and Google that emphasize the use of a stylus instead of a keyboard. Next up: the EduWand. The device, which syncs to iPads or Android tablets over bluetooth, spits out 3D printed objects from its tip, giving any makerspace a magical feel. Okay, so the beta “spits” like an octogenarian with emphysema, taking several hours to produce a 3D printout. Company leaders promise (fingers crossed!) to make it “lightning fast” in the next, oh, say, five to 10 years.
GETTING GRITTY: All those articles on Huffington Post say your child needs grit and resilience. But how to get it, while also making sure everything goes their way? Say hello to Helicopter Helper’s newest product, Auto Grit. Shake a dash of Auto Grit onto your kids, and they’ll look like you actually let them climb tall trees, do their own homework and roam the neighborhood without a GPS tracker. Imported from Finland.
TEACHERS ACTUALLY PAY TEACHERS: TsPayTs’ newest feature takes the company’s name to another level. Mindful of protests by teachers over low wages, TsPayTs now allows teachers from anywhere in the world to send a cut of their paycheck to help another. Teachers in Luxembourg are currently signing up in droves to help their beleaguered colleagues in Oklahoma and Kentucky.
MAKE IT IMPERSONAL: He scribbles all his notes by hand. He relies on carrier pigeons for his dispatches. He doesn’t register for classes on the school’s LMS. He speaks through a Darth Vader voice changer helmet. He only takes and pays with cash. He asks others to search on Google—in incognito mode—on his behalf. His photo ID is a pencil sketch. He targets ads—not vice versa. He is: The Man For Whom Nothing Can Be Personalized.
