Hi! This is so so random but u work with bats right? Would u mind giving some Hot Tips regarding anatomy, specifically for the wings? Ive been trying to draw a character with bat wings for arms but i cant grasp how theyd fold and stuff, and any of the references i find online either have the wings spread out or wrapped around the bat's body. It's probably best to start by talking about how the homology of bat wings works in relation to human arms and hands:

of note: that little bit usually seen sticking out of the top of the wing is their thumb! You can also see where the elbow falls above (where the humerus meets the radius and ulna). The wing membrane on bats often connects to their ankles - this is true in both megabats and microbats. The spreadable part of their wing is analagous to our fingers and wrist, which can be super confusing to think about, even as someone who has watched and filmed bats for hours and hours. For more examples of the above, google "bat wing homology"!

Because these are technically their "fingers", the wings tend to fold in in a bit of a curved way. You can see below here on this vamp & flying fox, as well as where the elbow bends:

They can bend and stretch at the elbows just like us, and can curl their fingers in.

(Another thing to think about is what kind of bat this character is modeled after - I only bring this up because I study vampire bats, and they're one of the only bat species that can really properly ambulate on the ground, which gives their wings and body a bit of a unique look, especially when they are on the ground. Google vampire bat running if you want to see lol.)

Many people like to stylize their anthro bat characters as having the wings be anatomically incorrect so that their bat character can have actual "hands" or paws, so that's also an option!

allison's always liked the act of playing sports way more than watching them (although she was never good enough at following orders to play on a team as a kid). she'll watch the big games with jodie, though

beverly is a casual fan who will at least root for local teams but doesn't really pay that close attention

melody and faith don't follow sports but can be convinced to show up for a super bowl party type get together

claire can only get invested in a sport or team if there's a jon bois type documentary that gets deep into the nerd shit

i always considered changing the name. i have a list of 75 different names i considered over the years in my notes, ranging from more generic fantasy titles to sillier ones to more unique ones. early on most involved melody's name. many later ones include "Reverie." i may share the full list someday (possibly good fodder for a patreon post), but the "serious" title i've mentioned considering before was Power Couple (or Power Couples). i still like that one

i debated over the title a lot for many reasons. mainly, people are weird about the title, either treating the whole game as a joke or assuming it's porn or whatever. some also assume that you just cannot play the game if you aren't a lesbian, a thing that people don't do with other fantasy things that happen to feature sapphic relationships without putting it in the title

the problem, of course, is that changing your title is often a death sentence. half the struggle with marketing a game is even getting people to remember it in the first place in an era where a million things are constantly fighting for your attention. people need to have seen it a few times before they create that mental connection of "oh, THAT game, i've heard of that." so changing your title massively undercuts that

in that regard, Super Lesbian Animal RPG is just way more unique and memorable of a title than the alternatives i was considering. it's direct and unambiguous about the content of the game, and it grabs your attention in a way that something like "Guardians of Reverie," for instance, doesn't. (that's not a title i was considering too seriously, just an example.) also it abbreviates to a unique hashtag, which i find convenient. also i can say that rock paper shotgun once referred to it as "brilliantly named," so like, of course i can't change it now

several of the names i considered are now in the running for an overall franchise name, though, since i have zero intention of naming a game Super Lesbian Animal Platformer or Super Lesbian Animal Visual Novel or whatever

they'll have certain commonalities that are widely understood. you can tell someone "i'm a witch" and they'll get that means you're primarily a magic user with a curiosity in the supernatural. but there are no strict regulations about what you can call yourself, no. like allison's class is just "punk," and that isn't A Thing that you can formally train to be recognized as. that's just her vibe. some titles may come with more specific expectations - for example, paladins are supposed to derive their power from faith - but a lot of the time it just comes down to semantics. what's the difference between a witch, a mage, and a sorcerer? who fuckin cares

before. the origin story for the bend is that when drawing melody for the first time i realized it was going to block her face, so i literally just bent it out of the way. (and also it makes the design more memorable and fits with them being undergeared first-time adventurers making do with what they've got)

claire has other outfits, but these days she's wearing her witch gear and guild tabard as much as possible because that's how she wants to be seen

I've just been wondering this but are there weapon regulation laws in the SLARPG world? Just curious if only registered guilds can have them or can just anyone carry a weapon around anywhere they want? lol

this isn't something i've really explored. my immediate thought would be that it probably depends on the weapon. wielding (or selling) an Ancient Cursed Obsidian Blade of Death is probably heavily regulated, but in a world where you can get jumped by monsters while traveling there's probably less concern over people carrying around regular old swords

I'm curious, was there ever any cut plans to expand on other locations in this universe such as Brightport? Was curious about that one since several characters mentioned it in game

if you mean "were there ever plans to visit brightport in slarpg," then no

the scope of the game was always confined exclusively to the sapphire islands from the start. one of my goals with slarpg was to have a small setting compared to other globe-trotting RPGs, but to explore that setting and its cast of characters more intimately. (mother 3's nowhere islands were a big influence.) but i also generally think it's good for worldbuilding when there's more to the world than what you see within the confines of the story. it stokes the imagination and makes it feel more real. if anything, i would've liked to reference even more locations elsewhere on reverie and things happening there, but i focused on brightport since it's claire and jodie's hometown and also the nearest major city

brightport is a big, big city, and if i ever explore it i want to do it right. had i found a plot excuse to make it appear later in slarpg, it probably would've needed to be smaller than greenridge with fewer buildings to enter, due to greenridge already being over scope. (notice how the other two settlements have simple outdoor marketplaces while greenridge has four separate shops you can enter, all with their own bespoke interior art and music. that was not a thing we could keep doing if we wanted to finish the game.) at that point it's not doing the idea of a big modern fantasy city justice, so why even bother?

it also would've felt very, very weird if you could visit brightport but you didn't get to meet claire and jodie's families, not to mention other characters since it can't JUST be them, and there needs to be some kind of transportation infrastructure connecting the sapphire islands to the mainland, and on and on and on. you can see how the workload quickly spirals out of control. so it was just never a thing i even considered for the game

I don't actually have too much to say here, since it's just the Kronya stuff, which... doesn't really reveal much. I'll just note that Kronya's sword has her as "Disciple Kronya" which I guess is interesting.

Since there's nothing else, I guess there's the point regarding what people know about each other going into the big part one finale:

Solon referred to Byleth as "Fell Star" already when casting Zahras, so the Agarthans had cottoned on about Byleth's situation at least in part, likely due to the Sword of the Creator.

As mentioned before, Edelgard and Hubert know that Demonic Beasts can be created artificially, and I would even say that some artificial ones already exist.

It is mentioned by several characters that Byleth's minty green color is "familiar" or "like someone else" and Flayn even directly says they match now. This is a super easy connection to make.

Seteth seems to not know that Agarthans can shapeshift, which works with Thales not wanting Kronya's body to be taken so that the specifics of their shapeshifting aren't discovered. iirc Seteth does obliquely refer to the Agarthans as being the likely culprits.

The Flame Emperor and the Death Knight being antagonists is at least known to Dimitri even though he theoretically wasn't around for the missions when we see them. Monica being an imposter is common knowledge after the fact. You doing a ceremony to receive a revelation from the goddess is common knowledge.

Anyway, the most interesting part starts after this.

You know, when GD made the promise to meet in 5 years, it was kind of cute. Not terribly meaningful, since their relationships were quite casual on the whole, but cute. Having Edelgard suggest it, knowing what she's planning barely months from now, is...... it's pretty messed up. It doesn't help that the Eagles don't really have a sense of camaraderie either.

Same cinematic for the ball. It was kind of one thing when Claude takes you by the hand and pulls you onto the dance floor (?) in GD, though the focus on Edelgard and Dimitri was pretty pointless, but here, it's just weird.

It's vaguely annoying that you can't choose who you meet at the Goddess Tower. I got Marianne on GD, and I got Ashe here... presumably because I recruited him by getting his B rank.

The chapel is within the monastery's walls.

OK, poking at the Demonic Beasts in the chapel, they are "Experimental Demonic Beasts" with "A shard from a shattered Crest Stone" embedded in their foreheads. They are a "more resilient variation." Although this won't be unique to them, they're also labelled as both "monsters" (unnatural beings wielding magic) and "dragons" (born or descended from the goddess herself).

There are 4 beasts and 3 students in trouble.

Jeralt suggests that the students being turned into beasts has "something to do with Remire," but I have come to doubt that Remire was a test run or directly related to the same research. The timeline is just too tight, and the Sothis paralogue won't make sense.

Thales tells Kronya she must survive because there's a role he needs her to fulfil, but then Solon will kill her in like a month. In a scene later, he says that his only aim was actually to keep the mystery of their bodies from being revealed, which would happen if Kronya died (her body could be taken by the Church, I guess).

Worth noting that Seteth is very confused about Tomas and clearly does not know that Agarthans can shapeshift.

The explanation for why Byleth accepts Jeralt's death is still so weak. "It's fate," says Sothis. OK, but like, why. Because Thales said so??

Guardian Moon (January) is named after Seiros, who first appeared during this month.

The scene with Edelgard after Jeralt's death is a bit... She starts with a very tough love "have you lost the will to act" approach and discusses how no one can understand your sadness. Others can only offer the tears of an outsider. So she won't cry for you or stand still with you, she can only promise to offer her hand when the time comes for HER to move forward. Which is such a weird direction to take? What does this promise have to do with Byleth grieving?

Thales describes the Flame Emperor as their greatest creation, powerful enough to "burn even the gods." So it seems like they experimented on Edelgard specifically to create a powerful soldier who could face Rhea.

Based on this, it does seem like Edelgard targeting the church is a combination of needing to keep the Agarthans cooperating with her by going along with their aims and getting rid of the Knights in case their interfere (since the Knights supported Loog's separation from the empire). Very impersonal, despite how she sometimes frames it.

Edelgard directly tells Thales that there will be no salvation for their kind and blames them for Duscur (and the shit they caused in Enbarr, presumably the Insurrection of the Seven?).

Sylvain says that most noble children are tested at birth to see if they have a crest. Of course, he also says you can't be the heir without one, but like... Ingrid's family wants to marry her out and she's specifically the only one with the crest, so...

The dancer animation is killing me. It's so stupid.

Hubert suggests that the real aim behind Jeralt's murder was to provoke the Knights into spreading themselves thin hunting his killer.

Kronya is using a sword called Athame, which is described as being crafted with archaic methods. Kronya herself is referred to as "Disciple Kronya." She also has a passive called "Agarthan technology" which makes adjacent foes deal 3 less damage. Is this the weird tentacles she has behind her?

Regarding the Sealed Forest itself, there's some ruins, the platform Kronya waits on (where Solon casts Zahras, which uses the pillars on the edges), a glowing red stone embedded in a sigil on a ruin wall, and the remains of mechanical weapon (I think the kind Rhea keeps in the Tomb in her paralogue?).

It snows on the Locket, I guess because the Throat is a mountain range.

The Holy Mausoleum vs Holy Tomb thing is SO confusing that Rhea has a dialogue line that uses the wrong one lmao

Despite Post-It Note being relatively skeptical about the whole thing, he still wanted to help Journal out as much as possible, since he seemed to have been telling the truth afterall.

The tone in Journal's voice struck nothing but concern in Post-It, as they ended up turning to look at him, just focused in piles of paperwork. Which caused Post it to end up closing the boxes back up and wander towards Journal.

" You seem..tense, Journal, have you ever considered taking a break at all? "

The look Journal had given Post it was far from a positive one.

" There's no time to waste! If I don't figure all this out then who knows what could happen?! "

Yikes..in the earlier state of the competition Journal would have never acted like this, the room was once again filled with the same sound of work. Only with Post it beside the overworked object, out of ideas in how to make him feel better and less..exhausted.

Maybe though, one thing would definitely work without a doubt. They were sure of it.

Despite his height. Post-it note manage to softly go over and place his hands onto the others side, earning a flinch and making Journal glance over rather quickly.

Being caught off guard wasn't the best thing for Journal, especially having someone like Post-It note around who..managed to surprise him multiple times, this one included as well.

Speaking of, the tinier object seemed to be using all sorts of tactics, squeezing, poking, scribbling, and pinching. It was absolutely the worst,

" There it is! I knew this was just the thing to see that smile again! " Since when was he so optimistic about this?

That remark was soon followed with regret as Post-It's attack seemed to worsened, the scribbling on his cover and eventually feeling light pinches onto his pages were the worst mix. The normally quiet lab area was filled with blooming laughter.

" POSTITNOTE! I NEHEEEHEED TO FOHHOHOCUS! "

" You already overwork yourself way too much..! "

" I DOHHOO NAHAHAAT! "

A few squeezes to the side pretty much shut him up, of course there were moments during this that Journal had ended up snacking Post-it note and that..didn't end well for him.

" Journal! I'm helping you out and you decide to hit me? "

" Wehhell stoohhop dooHHOHOOING THIIHIS!! "

Yep, the scribbling against the pages and tracing against the spine of his cover had definitely done the trick and left Journal a mess. Lucky for him Post-It note got off before anything crossed the line.

It took a full few minutes for Journal to get himself together again. But when he did he definitely stayed silent for awhile again.

" I didn't get you too bad right? "

...

" It was fine. Now, lets go back.. "

Eventually he had stood up and made his way towards the exit.

nazuna: i see nazuna places a strong value on honesty and hard work-- two very hakunocore traits i must say, i'm sorry!! they're both worrywarts that take care of others more than themselves i think, so i feel like they might nag on each other (/POS) a bit. it's because they care tho! i feel like hakuno would find nazuna so cute actually... and my hakuno is very much onee-san coded so- she’s naturally very caring but she’d extra look after him methinks! i see that nazuna does his best to encourage and support others and :pleading: hakuno def needs that kind of positivity in that life :,) she’s a tough cookie to crack though, i must warn you on that! would also just like to mention how they’re the same height (160cm) and i’m sorry but another warning: hakuno can be a gremlin and i just think she’d put on heels just to tease him about that sdfghgdh    

ritsu: I DIDN’T EXPECT TO SEE SO MANY SIMILARITIES BETWEEN HIM N HAKUNO ACTUALLY... okok but starting off, he likes to tease people to see their reactions and i’m so sorry because again, hakuno is literally so 😐🧍‍♂️ fdsfgdhj her cuter more expressive side shows when you get closer to her!! they’re both very intuitive which is interesting when you take into account their similar traits (i.e. ABANDONMENT ISSUES- yet distance themselves from other in a way ^_T). ritsu gives me cat vibes too so like,, can imagine her lowkey doting on him. if she finds him passed out somewhere, he won't have to worry abt a thing be stronk kuno can carry him to safety ! 💪 they both play the piano too so idk idk i think it’d be neat for them to play something together! also, i’ve mentioned hakuno’s sweet tooth a lot but!! i still have to say it: she’d love to try his sweets okok :pleading:

kaoru: if he tries to flirt with her then good luck kaoru because this girl's denser than a harem protagonist FHDSHD hakuno's 🤨 about flirts though, so i feel like there could be potential for some bit of tension there, but i don't think it'd be anything particularly bad! hakuno would definitely understand and relate to his want for validation and i feel like she'd be able to see more to him than just a "playboy" kind of image :thonk: i see that he gets along with the "eccentric" types anddd hakuno could def fit right in there lmao - she may look all cute and elegant, but she's pretty quirky chaotic! it'd be sweet for them to slowly befriend and open up to each other methinks :pleading:

Alright so quick TW for fire, trauma, mild mania mention, death of family, and weapon mentions

Way before the SMP and everything Charrish was just part of a regular old family of skeleton half-breeds. Their mother was an Overworld skeleton, and their father was a Wither Skeleton. Charrish had a brother, more Overworld than Wither, and Charrish was the opposite. Now, their father was often away fighting as a guard for the nearby Nether Fortress. Because of this, their mother had to raise two rapidly growing children on her own. (For reference of growth speed, Charrish turns out to be 9'10) And so over time their mother decended into something of a mute madness. She repeated the same tasks on the daily and never did anything else, trapped in a mental loop.

One day, Charrish was out gathering materials to get them through the summer spent in the Overworld with their mother's family. But while they were out, a rogue Ghast fireball struck their home, starting a raging fire only fueled by the environment. The ceiling collapsed just as Charrish returned. They ran into the flames in an attempt to save what family they had left, but instead they got pinned beneath a burning board, mother and brother already dead.

Charrish was the only survivor, but they were burned to no end. Every inch of their body was a rough charcoal texture and was flaking at the touch, and what used to be grayish bone turned what resembles Wither Skeleton black. The entire community thought they wouldn't make it, that the burns and injuries were too bad and they were better off on their own to die in peace. Not to mention the other skeletons their age making up names, Charred being one of them. It made them feel ostracized, and even more alone than they already were. But they took on the title, eventually changing it up a bit to Charrish. Later on, they'll forget what their name before even was. When they tell the tale, they'll say "My name before this was not who I am. Becoming Charrish was my destiny, my purpose. It always has been. I know it."

Miraculously, they survived the burn. And decided to attempt and do something no Wither Skeleton had done before, take up permanent residence in the Overworld. Even spending the summer was risky, and they were often kept ib hot temperatures. But going through all the seasons up there was seen as impossible. Then again, them surviving was supposed to be impossible, as well.

Before they left, they received a gift along with a note. The note was from their father, telling them about how he had always believed in them. Charrish didn't believe a word of it, but did take the gift. It was the first sword their father had ever trained with; a sturdy stone one without enchantments but the power of Withering embedded deep in its cracks. That was all Charrish had to take up to the Overworld. Oh, and the name of the weapon? IT was carved into its hilt centuries before then. Famine. The first of many, which I'll get to in a second.

In childhood, they were good friends with Techno. They grew up together. But he moved to the Overworld long before Charrish did, and they drifted apart. So seeing him again was certainly a trip. Charrish showed up when everyone was in mourning over the first loss of Wilbur. The remaining members of SBI took them in first, mostly because of their relationship with Techno. And the rest just fell into place from there.

The iron daggers they carry share the name Conquest, and their Netherite axe is named War. Famine, Conquest, and War. And as for powers, the only real power comes from when they eventually discover they can harness the abilities of the Wither itself. It hurts like Hell, but they can fly, shoot beams of light that explode upon contact, and all that cool Wither shit.

Some extra lore: (I have a Slides presentation for this that I'm reading off of)

They can't stand fire after what happened, but they have an immunity to it

They can't return to the Nether for too long, both because of memories and because they've adapted to living in the Overworld

They can't remember the names of their family and they also can't remember how they forgot. Charrish and Ghostbur narrowed it down to either repression or memory loss from blunt force trauma (they did it with the help of Phil, too)

They hate serious injuries and try to either hide them or walk them off because of how they were treated when everyone thought they would die

Charrish is always very aware because the last time they weren't, their mother and brother died

When they die in canon, they turn into a pile of bones that slowly get reconstructed and put back together as they respawn

"Chat" are the souls once in the Soul Sand from the Nether that their house was built on trapped in their hollow ribcage, and others are more souls claimed by Famine in battle (those would be the subscribers ahdks)

oooh, charrish sounds really cool! with the way charrish was treated in the nether, does that imply that maybe they hate serious injuries because they were treated so poorly since everyone thought charrish was gonna die from their injuries? i think its really cool of charrish to really own their name! also, you said that they "tell the tale", to who do they tell it to? the names for their weapons are super cool! i feel like they really fit the vibe of the nether especially Famine since there isnt much food in the nether! since they showed up during the grievance of wils death, how did charrish react to seeing technos secret room filled wall to wall with wither skeletons? were they angry? afraid? not bothered, even?
