thinking about supernaturals circular narrative. how i don’t (and won’t) watch sitcoms because of the conventions of a circular narrative.
the parallels of how characters are reduced into one-dimensional imitations of who the audience perceived them to be, boiled down into their most defining, dividing traits— a phenomenon exclusive to the intrinsic nature of sitcoms. thinking about how everything that is learnt in one episode, is forgotten in the next— how there is no progress, how there is no change and everything will always, always stay the same for the sake of the audience where nothings new.
part of why dean felt he wouldve been better off dead, about why he didnt deserve to be saved, was because he could never make any difference. how they were trapped by the same story, over and over again, that nothing mattered no matter what he did, because he'd just end up in the very same position he was 15 years ago. even before the insertion of chuck's storyline, before freewill, the pervasive hand of the writers have always held them down from the very first episode

OKAY, OKAY FOLLOW UP, but I have to ask, based on how you rank Riggs movie and Logans movie, what do you think of Rigg and Logan in a more indepth analysis?? E.g what makes them interesting to you, or what stands out about them to you?
And somewhat off-topic, how do you think the other apprentices would interact with Logan??
how dare u ask for a detailed analysis when i love overanalyzing you just want to derail me for another two hours dont you.
Riiiiiggg <3
first of all I thought it was really cool that for Saw IV, a guy who was kind of a minor established character got to ascend to protagonist. (I guess the same thing happened with Hoffman but I straight up forgot he was in Saw III at all when I was watching IV for the first time. I remembered Rigg from II and his brief III appearance though)
in Saw II he so easily could have just been the Predator/Aliens overconfident gun guy trope with an itchy trigger finger. and yes, hes eager for the whole thing to get a move on so the victims can be saved, but hes not mindless. I love that he joins in the deliberation with Kerry and Matthews and they spend a few moments to establish how much he cares about his colleagues, his too-big heartstrings tugged by how difficult this situation must be for Matthews.
SO it was cool to see that became the major character flaw which contributed to his demise in IV. He cared too much. He lost his test because he couldn't stop caring. He almost got in trouble in the past for caring too much already, punching that guy. He ran into the crime scene without backup which could have gotten himself killed, because his emotions took over. (Also tangentially related, I'd say he has a lot of parallels with Strahm who also thinks with his heart first, and the end mirrors the beginning nicely with how Strahm also rushes into the crime scene without backup. Saw IV has a lot of really cool things going on actually)
At the start, they make it very clear he works himself sick worrying about the case and his missing friends despite it not being his job to worry about it. I'm saddened by his strained relationship with his wife because she seemed nice and normal, one of the few pairs without infidelity, and he's obviously very sweet and sensitive and caring, but too much for his own good. First time watching, the whole time I was just begging this nice man to go home to his nice wife like Jigsaw instructed, pained knowing this couldnt possibly end well for him or her.
hes an optimist. he believes, despite him being missing for 6 months, that Matthews is still out there and that he can be found. He believes he can save everyone in the traps. (well except that 1 guy you know the one) He believes he can save his friends. He tried to do it all.
😭😭😭😭😭😭 taken tf out for caring too much.
im sorry that my favorite characters are the shitheads and little bastards. Rigg is just such a good boy i care him. Im holding him in my hands
LOGAN.... gosh Logan I really wish I had any opinions on you. Its been like 8 months since I watched the movie and was never really presented with much fandom discussion around him so im afraid to say i forgor what his personality is 😭 hes like just kind of normal right?
in the fuckin sitcom Saw house of my dreams, i think Logan would be the 1 apprentice that everyone gets along with bc he just repels drama. they would finish up nearly ripping each other's throat out and one by one throughout the rest of the day kick down his door to vent about it, so he has to hear the same story from 3 different perspectives and just nods his head and goes "uh-huh"

Your post abt how male victim sa is treated as a joke in media really resonates w/ me. like i dont watch drama tv shows, i watch like sitcom/comedy stuff and so its extra apparent to me in a way?
Because while in a drama tv show you can have both male and female sa victims, sitcoms will rarely if ever try to make jokes about female sa (or at least now anyway, i dont watch older sitcoms) they absolutely do make male sa jokes.
For example, in Parks and Rec theres this episode where April and Andy make a lot of doctors appointments in one day and in one part Andy is listing out all the doctors they've seen and Andy says like "One guy looked at my weiner, touched it, that was weird" and April says "And that guy wasn't even a doctor" and Andy says "...What" with an uncomfortable look on his face and then it just moves on.
And its supposed to be a funny haha moment but everytime I see that clip I get really uncomfortable bc like its never clarified if she was kidding or not but also why would you joke abt your husband being sa'd???
And thats just one example, theres plenty of others. (The whole thing with Barney and Rhonda French in HIMYM makes me super uncomfortable even tho its played as consensual, it gives me bad vibes)
But it feels like no one ever really cares to talk abt it, so it was nice to see someone bring it up. Sorry for the long ask 😅
The comedy I watch is normally yes about equal to Parks and Rec or Brooklyn 99 and yes, there's a lot of jokes that fly under the radar because they victimize one group or another that isn't seen as "in danger". The amount of prison rape and prostate exam (hinthint wink wink not performed by a doctor though teehee) jokes really stand out the more you pay attention to it. And maybe it IS time to pay attention to it, because clearly this is a symptom of a bigger issue, one that endangers everyone.
Going back to stuff I watch more of because I haven't seen more than a clip or two of HIMYM, but I remember when I was watching Buffy with my ex [then boyfriend] and he pointed out that Xander had a really good reason not to like Faith and it's because Faith rapes him (forced to penetrate) and how Xander really... never seemed to forgive her for it and always seemed uncomfortable around her after. And while I was not part of the fandom during the show's heyday, being that I am a relatively recent watcher only maybe about 6 or 7 years ago, he told me it was very frustrating to him that the fandom seemed to focus more on the wrongdoing of Spike's *attempt* to rape Buffy, than the *actual rape* Faith did to Xander.
Even with my Witcher example, I'm seeing people shipping Yennefer and Jaskier because they had a moderately improved friendship in season two, while not at ALL touching on the fact that Jaskier's first memory of her is a blatant sexual assault and maybe that's why he's increasingly aggressive to her every time they see each other for the remainder of season one and when seeing her again in season two. It's more than "he's somewhat jealous of her closeness with Geralt" when I know for a fact she pinned and grabbed him by the penis and I wouldn't fault anyone for not liking someone who grabbed their genitals without consent. I'm not yucking anyone's yum but it's really frustrating to me to see people skate right by that.
(again, books/games fans who follow/reblog, your faves are not immune, I present to you one Triss Merigold who rapes *Geralt himself* by means of a love potion in the books and who does it *again* in the games if you let her manipulate Geralt into sleeping with her when he has amnesia, do not even start with 'wehweh this is why the show sucks' when your favorite adaption did it too and Triss/Geralt is a possible romance path in the third game, AND Yennefer is mad at Geralt for... letting Triss rape him while they were together, because she considers it cheating, if you talk to her about it in the third game she dumps you in the lake to punish you for defending yourself)
Big sigh.

idk if you want Discussion on wandavision so pls delete this if u don't but i agree that the sitcom writing doesn't really work--for me it mostly feels rushed, like they didn't really put in the work to make us care abt the characters or how the plots of the episodes turn out--but i strongly suspect that's because they're only going to bind themselves to it for the first 4/5 episodes, since it's only 9 in the season and i think advanced reviewers got to see the first 3. plus the sitcom parts of the trailer mostly showed thru the 70s which is episode 3. i think it'd be insufferable as it is rn if they tried to draw it out too long but also i want them to Commit. anyway i came here to say reviews are probably skewed bc they saw the third episode but when i read most of them they don't seem to recognize that it's absolutely going to flop if the mystery payoff isn't satisfying bc i dont think it can stand without it and i dont really trust marvel to pull it off lmao
i feel like they’re banking on 1) The Mystery 2) The Premise (ie the different sitcom each week thing) and 3) Love of The Characters to keep us watching, but the problem is that, at least for me,
1) i don’t feel like The Mystery was actually set up well enough to be intriguing- it’s more that they’ve fed us a few crumbs, instead of giving us some actual pieces to the puzzle
2) The Premise isn’t all that great- it could be! I mean, I grew up on Mr. Ed and I Dream of Jeannie and I Love Lucy, but those shows were charming and funny and enjoyable to watch, especially due to
3) Love of The Characters, which here also falls flat because honestly? I don’t really care for either Wanda or Vision (which is sad, because Wanda has such capability for coolness! And Vision... is a sentient toaster oven. Sorry not sorry). I feel like these characters are more blank slates to project onto, instead of fully fleshed out characters, you know?
and, like you said, i really don’t know how they’d pull this off for more than a few episodes, because i’m not sure marvel really knows what it’s doing

hi do u have any good starting points for Getting Really Into britcom? i watch a lot of panel shows but like. there feels like a bunch of Content i could be Consuming but just don’t know where to start i guess lol
honestly sometimes i feel like i dont even know! ive not seen a lot of sitcoms or stand up specials, i think the best thing you can do is just check out any names of things youve heard of. most of what i do is on line youtube or dailymotion, but if you have a vpn you can try netflix or bbc iplayer or uktv play or whatever channel 4’s streaming service is called now (it keeps changing) also a lot of my finding new things stems from liking specific comics- i got into taskmaster bc of noel fielding! like id try and watch anything with joe lycett or james acaster for example. i also follow people like suzi ruffell, tom allen, katherine ryan, aisiling bea, nish kumar, ed gamble, etc on social media. overall i think its sort of like............. anime? theres so many shows and genres and stuff, theres no one way to Get Into It and no set path or have-to-watch list. you can probably get a gist for whose considered the ogs of britcom though (python, the chuckle brothers maybe, morcomb and wise, even vic and bob though theyre younger) and start from there if you like, idk! for me a lot of britcom, especially the panel shows, is driven by knowing the personalities of the people involved so maybe chasing after specific people you like and thereby discovering new things is a good method, or just checking tv listings, youtube recs- or somewhere like chortle’s website if youre into stand up idk. also a lot of it, once you start chasing personalities, isnt strictly comedy anymore, thats part of it, its such a huge broad web of things once you get into the individual personalities- i love the off menu podcast, for example, and lots of comedians host game shows, but i wouldnt really strictly call those COMEDY programmes but they are funny bc of the people in them.
this is all a very long rambly way of saying idk what im doing either but just find people you like and do some googling and see where it takes you. also theres a britcom reddit for panel shows and another for non panel shows that are britcom related or whatever and they usually have links and stuff

Hi, I don't wanna bother you but I need help and you write really well. Do you have any tips for actually finishing your stories. Like I'll start a story and maybe write half a chapter and never finish it. I wanna start posting stuff but I don't feel like I'll be good enough. Also I don't feel like my writing is engaging enough. If you have advice I would really appreciate it. 💕
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO this is actually hard for me to answer bc i have the SAME problem???
i guess one way that i try and like go about this is had a word count goal? like a majority of my chapters have between 2.5k and 3k words (of course, there are exceptions) and that kind of helps me with limiting or even filling in information so that i can have a decent ending
As for like actual plot line and chapter conclusions, i guess i this is what i try and go for:
i know some people do the whole cliffhanger thing where they will end a chapter somewhere that makes the reader want to click next, and im all down for it like that always kills me i love it so much but i actually only did it for one fic, since im not really that great at it.
other writers (myself included) like to write chapters more as television episodes?? so there is an issue or problem introduced at the beginning of the chapter, and those chapters will end with the problem being resolved. the problem with this though, is that its hard to follow through with one giant major plot. television shows who usually do this are like sitcoms or comedy shows, who usually have no major plot line that needs a resolution but rather each episode has its own plot and story. this is why with shows like “Big Bang Theory” or “Friends”, you dont need to watch from the very beginning to understand completely. while shows that end on cliffhangers are things like crime shows or mystery shows that almost each season has one giant issue or problem to solve, that’s why for shows like “The Last Ship” or “Agents of SHIELD”, you do sorta need to start from episode one to really understand whats going on. so depending on what your story is, you can really determine how to end individual chapters.
(however, as you may notice there are sitcoms that last years and have tons of seasons, so what works for television seems to abide by different rules when it comes to written works, strangely)
my fic “Normal” usually ends by solving the initial problem addressed in the beginning of the chapter, while “I Love to Hate You” is more of a cliffhanger type of story, this is because “Normal” is a lot more lighthearted in nature especially since it follows pretty closely to the plot line of Spider-man: Homecoming, while ILTHY is more serious and is trying to solve a mystery, so most chapters will end in a cliff hanger to try and get readers to continue reading until the mystery is solved. (not all chapters, but as it picks up yes)
im gonna try and write out a really bad example im sorry im like garbage
you probably notice that a lot of fics that are more fluff and lighthearted tend to not be as long as fics that are angsty or have an underlining issue within the story, and thats kind of because its hard to really keep a fic going if there is no major plot to write for, thats why one shots usually tend to be fluff and series works tend to be angst.
so like lets say we got a fic written purely fluffly and written for warming hearts and making smiles, if the plot line is about a normal girl finding out who spiderman really is, then almost each chapter will be a sort of its own stand alone one-shot, like close calls with peters identity or maybe even a cute little realization that the girl actually likes spiderman. so each ending will resolve whatever was in the beginning. and when you put it all together, the climax is usually spiderman’s identity being revealed, feelings addressed earlier will sort of fly back into your chest and you kind of get this “aw” moment, because you already knew what was coming and you already knew that the girl and peter were going to end up together. and the chapters following are usually super fluffy little extras that are there to kind of smooth out the ending.
yet fics that are addressing a more serious issue, like lets say we got a fellow avenger being targeted by some other organization, and usually each chapter will end by revealing one tiny piece of information before finally ending. all these pieces will eventually link together, revealing the climax in a way that makes you think “oh snap this was addressed in like chapter 3 and that thing was mentioned in chapter 12 and oh man whats happening″ like all the chapters usually link together in one way or another to “reveal” something. and the ending reaction usually goes along with shock or relief, rather than an all knowing “aw”
SO to end each chapter, really all depends on the kind of story you want. if you want something fluffy, then you can do little stories that build upon each other to have a cute resolution.
or if you want something serious then each chapter usually should have a piece of the puzzle hidden within, it might not be obvious to the reader at first, but in order to understand the ending then each chapter must be read and give a little piece of the mystery away.
im sorry if this is just hella long and absolute garbage and doesnt make sense at all but like this is kind of how i see it??? i hope this helps and i know i rambled for the most part but please let me know if you need clarity???
Also, here are some fic recs that you can read to get what im trying to explain:
@bitsandbobsandstuff‘s “Safe With Me” fic is a perfect example of mystery and like chapter endings get you MESSED UP and this is such a good read like yall ill fling myself into the sun for this fic
@infamous-webhead GOT A WHOLE ASS MASTERLIST for works that will melt your heart and quite literally, Make You Feel Better
