Adobo (not gravy version) recipe:
1 parts white vinegar : 2 parts soy (the reduced salt version also works) : 3 parts water (you’ll need to add more later if you use a lidless pot and it boils off)
Pork (basic option, I use chops since they tear apart nicely later anyway) or chicken (breasts tear nicely later as well, makes the whole dish sweeter so adjust taste as required)
Minced garlic (I use the jarred version for convenience, heaping spoonfuls - I usually go with 2)
Black pepper (bunch, go wild this soup is made of vinegar and soy sauce)
Bay leaves (3-4 and remove before serving, optional if it’s a pain to get but very nice if you have it)
Brown sugar (2 spoonfuls to start, you’ll more than likely add more later as this and water are our primary flavor controls)
If it tastes too sour, add brown sugar. If that doesn’t work, add more water. I honestly haven’t had to do anything else to corral the flavors, but I’ll happily experiment with suggestions.
Boil Like The Soup. Once the meat is safe to eat, it’s basically ‘done’. Typically I’ll let it go a few hours of stewing in the tasty juices while jacking with the flavor every 30min or so, but that’s because I enjoy it. Much like stew, it’s also way tastier reheated the next day or if it cooks a bit longer.
Serve over rice, or potatoes. Adding chopped potatoes directly to the pot can also help with the salty soy, but I’ve done it like once and can’t fully vouch (tasty tho). Broccoli is also fun ‘cause it disintegrates and adds textures, but they do slurp a lot of juice while whole and that can be kinda unpleasant to bite into (a sopping mess of salty sour mush).
Minor warning: the fumes may steal your nose hairs, so take general steam precautions because this steam has extra weapons.

Writing Update (09/22/23)
Hello everyone! It's been a while since I made one of these, huh? 👀
I've spent the past few weeks settling back into university work, but now I'm back into the swing of writing and developing things. So I thought I would take this chance to clarify some things, and lay down what the future of The Exile is gonna look like.
The Public Demo is now done. Chapter Five is the last chapter that you'll be able to play for free until the game is finished. Right now, I am working on rewriting what is written and porting the game into Twine. This means I'm expanding scenes, adding variation and flavor text, fixing stubborn lingering bugs, and implementing a codex + optional flashback scenes (*cough* and art *cough*) into the game. This will take a while.
I'm not just copy and pasting things into Twine and changing the coding-- I'm polishing things, adding lore and info, and overall just making the game significantly more "put together" so-to-speak. The version of The Exile that's up right now has been the Alpha Version of the game, It's never been properly edited beyond fixing glaringly obvious typos, continuity errors, and bugs. Now, I'm working on actually implementing broader, more complex changes into the game based on feedback I've gotten over the coarse of the past two years of writing!
My hope is to release the Twine Demo at some point around January. But that's a goal, not a deadline. I'll likely take in more beta readers for the Twine version of the game at some point, and post the Twine build onto my Patreon more casually in the following months. I'll delve more into both of things, however, when the time comes.
My hope is to be as transparent as possible and try to be more active on here as I work on things, so expect to see writing updates once more! Though they'll likely be quite short, functioning just to keep you guys updated on what's going on ~*behind the scenes*~

Working on overhauling and simplifying stats (the main focus with be MC's combat stats, along with MC's personality + commanding style)
Debating adding a sort of optional "personality test" that will tell you what mythosi your MC would be based on their personality!

..anyways, i decided to expand upon argonus a bit more; more specifically, make the biomes more clear and add some geography. i already made a map of argonus once, but now it's time for the (more full) details.
are you ready for my nonsense rambling? ALRIGHT HERE WE GO!!!!
first of let me just say this: i am crap at making maps. I literally just googled "literal translation of countries' names" and went from there. i also just grab a photo-to-linear converter on google and then made nessisarly changes to make it workable (because converting a photo of a colored drawing to linear creates messy results), plus a few misspelling here and there. but I'm happy with the results, cause now i really got a frame of references for when i start making more exclusive fauna and potentially stories.
anyways, as a copy planet of earth, it's not just the flora, fauna and biomes that are near-identical to us, but also the continents as well, even there's an "old world" and "new world". however, when it comes to countries, that's where it ends, because they have different names than ours (and different-looking countries).
but, before I go listing off countries, i should probably talk about language first:
so, because I lack some creativity, the elkinets do speak "common human" (aka human languages). common human, contrary to what one may believe, is not specific to humans; it's called "common human" because it's the most commonly spoken languages among humans, and has been developed independently by other sophonts across the omniverse.
some of the most common and predominate of the common human throughout the planet include: -English -spanish -Korean -Russian -Chinese -Hindi -Japanese -French -Italian -German -Arabic -Greek
however, their original language is known as "true elkinish", which has nouns, pronouns and adjectives in Latin and the rest in greek. here's how it works and sounds (example text taken from Butte collage):

how I organize my DM notes using OneNote
a few people said they were interested in seeing how i organize my notes for the games that i run, and let’s be honest, that’s all i need to make a huge informative post. (to my players, you can look! i’ve crossed out info you shouldn’t have lol)
i use OneNote, which i *think* you can use for free online even if you don’t have microsoft. could be wrong on that though. anyway, details and screenshots are under the cut!
here are the sections i split everything into:
[ID: a menu bar showing different tabs that say Players, NPCs, World, Calendar, Sessions.]
“Players” is the least completed session for my online game because my players have uploaded their character sheets to Roll20 so I got lazy about copying that info over. but normally, this section is split into different pages for each of my players, and will have the player’s contact info, as well as their character sheet, etc. but really, the only important part of the character sheet, for my purposes, is their backstory and passive perception and insight modifiers. I will also note their relationships with NPCs here (as you’ll see in the NPC section), and keep track of their renown with various factions (i do a homebrew renown-tracking thingy to keep track of friends and enemies of the party).
next is NPCs!

I used to keep track of EVERY SINGLE NPC this way but it got overwhelming fast, so I only put notable NPCs here (either famous ones, ones that i expect will be around a bit, or ones my PCs will fight/fight with). i use this section to quickly remind myself who the NPC is, their class/race/alignment, what they look like, their personality and a short backstory if applicable. you can also see the little table where i keep track of relationships, and that’s how I track PC relationships too. if relevant, i keep the NPC’s statblock here as well. once i’ve created more NPCs for this campaign, i’ll organize the pages into subpages by family/faction, but i’m not quite there yet with this one!
now onto World!

as the name suggests, i keep most worldbuilding info here, including detailed info about the towns and cities the PCs visit or have been to. some towns (like Sweetvale!) have more detail than others. i also keep larger world info in this section: world history/conflicts, the pantheon and origin stories of the gods (i have a homebrewed pantheon so that’s why it’s necessary), and overarching themes and shit that are relevant to the campaign. this is also a place where i’d keep maps for my own reference if i were more organized. “World Notes” is where i furiously type ideas as they pop into my head, to later develop. i wish i could show you that section, it’s buckwild and has a lot of exclamation points, but it’s very spoilery.
onto the calendar!

as you can see, i use a homebrewed calendar because of course i do. full disclosure: i stole most of those week day names from another DM because i love them. but basically the calendar for this world is a 12-month year, 28 day-month, 7 day-week, so it’s kept similar to our IRL calendar. this is where i keep my primary notes of what happens in each session. they’re brief, because 1) i have a pretty good memory for the hijinks the party gets up to, and 2) i put a lot of detail into the plans for each session so i feel like i can go more minimalist here. the most important things i note for each session are: where the party went, if they met any NPCs, the fights they had and if they obtained any special or magical items. i also use the calendar to keep track of full moons, world events and holidays in the world.
next up is Sessions!

“Adventures” is where I keep all the notes for past adventures (See below). I link to each paragraph (a feature of OneNote) so i can easily click and get to what i need to see. the “Current Adventure” page is where i keep notes for, you guessed it, the current session, just to minimize how much i need to scroll, and at the end of the session i cut/paste everything that we got to into the Adventures section. Campaign notes and session ideas are, again, where i furiously type notes that make no sense and need to be edited and expanded upon, haha. And Tech shit is where I put the order of stuff i need to plug in for my online sessions. i’m kind of a dummy.
below is an example of my session prep notes:

this is just to give you an idea of how detailed my notes are. they are typically this detailed, if not more so. but i know lots of DMs will basically type out a hook and a resolution and leave the middle blank for notes. it’s really up to you and how you best prep and run sessions. i err on the side of over-preparing because it’s who i am, and when i try to go into a session with less preparation, i feel overwhelmed lol. i occasionally add a few notes here and there as we play in this section, but as i said, keep most of my notes to the Calendar section.
you can also see above how i list NPCs that i expect my players to only briefly interact with. Name, age, appearance, a few notes about personality/motivation, and that’s it. OneNote is cool because you can search for specific words and phrases and it’ll search the whole notebook, so i can easily find these NPCs again if i need to. (note: normally my notes wouldn’t be this....structured? as in, they’ll be less linear than this typically, but this was for the first session where i knew which PCs i’d be introducing first, etc. don’t want you to think i’m a big old wet blanket DM.)
and that’s it! hopefully this is useful for some of you, or at least gives you ideas for how you might organize your game moving forward. IMO the most useful sections are the World, Calendar and Session sections: they’re what i reference and add to the most. let me know if you have any questions!

Final Project Commentary
For my final project, I decided to go with the personal identity option.
Brainstorming and planning
As mentioned in my brand guide and presentation, I wanted to encapsulate my professional strengths with my character in my brand. I love pastels and all things cute so I thought of incorporating some soft gradients and fun in my logo.
The colour palette I shortlisted includes pink, purple, green and cream as the main colours. Pink, my favourite colour, symbolises adoration and youth. Purple and green can signify spirituality and harmony respectively. The cream shade is used to provide balance overall. (Also Taylor Swift’s Lover palette is similar and that album is a bop so...).
My initial logo designs were as follows:
After the peer evaluation session, I gleaned that my friends also liked the heart logo the best, but had some comments about the readability of the word “world”. They also preferred the darker shade of pink for the logo:

The Logo
I knew that I wanted to utilise the heart shape in my logo somewhere because I believe in spreading joy and love. But I also wanted to make its incorporation more interesting, hence I thought of shaping my brand name into the heart. I chose Coaster as the typeface because I liked the quirky, bubblegum look of it.
Using Adobe Illustrator for the whole logo, these were the steps I took to warp the text into the heart:
1. Creating the heart shape: Shape Tool to make 2 rectangles and pulled the edges inwards to curve them.
2. Used the Pen Tool to create a curvy shape on top of and in the horizontal centre of the heart.
3. Selected all shapes > Pathfinder > Divide.
4. Used Type Tool to create “Tricia” and “World” texts separately, using 50pt size.
5. Selected all texts > Object > Arrange > Send to Back.
6. Selected top half of heart and “Tricia” > Object > Envelop Distort > Make with top object. I repeated this for the bottom half and “world”:

10. Changed the text colour to a two-tone pink linear gradient with the Gradient Tool.
To create the 3D bubblegum effect I was going for, I copied the logo and pasted it in the back. Then, selecting the back layer, I changed its opacity to 80% and adjusted the front layer to the right and a bit lower.
I also added highlights with the Pen Tool as a stroke in the cream shade for a “shiny” effect. For this, I chose a Rounded Cap (below) in the Stroke panel and traced out highlights to my liking. I also lowered opacity of these strokes to 80% for better blending:
The Resume
The next collateral I worked on was the resume. For this, I wanted to go for a neater look with some white space to aid in easy reading. I sectioned my professional info logically and positioned them within 2 columns.
I also included a “side-bar” column in my palette’s colours created with the Free-Form Gradient Tool for contrast and emphasis since my contact info and portfolio links are located in this segment.
The title font I chose, Honeypirls Slant, is in a style such that the spacing between certain letters is very little. So, I adjusted the kerning for the affected letters manually by holding down the Option key and using the left and right arrows to equalise the spacing between the letters. I called upon this feature whenever I used this typeface in the other collaterals like the brand guide as well to improve legibility and readability.

I also referred to the Gestalt Principles to organise my resume’s look, more specifically, the principle of Similarity. I also used the rule of Proximity where there was lesser spacing between sentences in the same section as compared to the spacing between each segment.
I used icons to represent my competency levels in the languages and IT skills sections to make it quicker to skim through and compare.
The Name Card
For the name card, I wanted a minimalistic look that coincided with the look and feel of my resume for a consistent branding.
To provide this similarity, I used the Free-Form Gradient Tool again to create gradient backgrounds using my colour palette for the front and back of the card. To edit the way each of the colours in the gradient appear, I clicked the “Edit Gradient” button and moved the circles representing each colour around until I was satisfied.
I placed my logo and information in the centre of the cards without other elements surrounding them, to place direct attention towards them.
The Brand Guide
After sketching out a rough look for the star of the show, the brand guide, I opened Adobe InDesign. I then formatted the document according to the brief, adding more features like 2 columns, column gutters, margins and bleed.
I generally made the layout uniform by aligning text and placed elements with guides and referring to the vertical and horizontal rulers on the InDesign interface.
To increase efficiency, I also created character styles for my titles, sub-titles and body text and named them accordingly. Since the background of the pages in brand guide aren’t the same for all sections, I reproduced these character styles in the pink, purple and white shades as well. This was to allow me to choose the best colour for the text on the specific page such that there would be substantial contrast and therefore better readability. I took care to name my character and paragraph styles properly to minimise confusion.
Because I’m not a seasoned InDesign user, it took me significantly longer to get the hang of the software. And making the curvy shape below with the Pen Tool took me about 10 minutes... But I digress, to make the shape, I clicked and held down my mouse as I created paths and closed the path before filling it with my desired colour.
To add a little spice to the brand guide, I created embellishments like circular texts. To make those, I used the Circle Shape Tool and held down shift to create a circle. Then, I used the Type on Path Tool to type out my desired text, adjusting the kerning, text size and size of the text box to fit them well into the circle. I also used this tool to create the curved “thank you” text on my last slide:
Critique and Feedback
A major concern raised during the online feedback session was the contrasts between my gradient background and colour choices for my text. To be honest, this was also one of my concerns as I was making the brand guide. So, I decided to add another, darker purple shade (#7D81BE) which was used purposefully on the resume and name cards to afford for better text readability. I also lowered the opacity of my backgrounds for more contrast.
Other minor concerns were the alignment of some my texts, which I made an effort to change and align left for a more intuitive reading flow and consistency. I also altered the structure of my resume to a top-down flow for more hierarchy in information.
Final thoughts
I had sooo much fun making this brand guide, which I was initially quite intimidated to start on! From this project, not only did I get a better grasp on Adobe software (especially InDesign), but I also got to deeply self-reflect, exercise creativity and think strategically on how to best communicate my brand aspects in a way that’s interesting but also organised and easily comprehensible. This mod was one of the best mods I’ve taken :)

First time working with an API for sourcing data
(Eventbrite example)
So I've heard the term "API" thrown around a LOT and knew how it worked in concept, but never actually did it myself. Here's my attempt. I took these notes as I was doing it, so some steps might be unclear, but hopefully I covered most of the basics.
Some background is needed, esp if you don't know what you're doing:

Challenge 1: Finding API provider & Getting an API Key
** You will need a URL to input and acquire a key. I didn't delve deep into it but you could create a URL that points to your localhost machine. As that seems to take the ID of the host/server you're connected to, it's not quite as flexible as a web URL.. I might be totally wrong here. I went the URL route (put in a random blog I had) because I was afraid that a local host will be tied to my immediate internet connection - as I'm not working from my regular internet connection, I didn't want to have to request a potentially new local host… If anyone has more material on this would love to learn more.
** You will want to use / copy the PRIVATE API KEY. In EB that means you need to click on the arrow down to expand the menu and select the 2nd option -- the code visible immediately on the page without expansion is *not* the right code and does not provide proper OAUTH authorization. I'm assuming that's the difference between an "API KEY" and an "API Token" but just my guess here.
Searching for an API, I stumbled upon Rapid API first and wanted to figure out how to use it. Unfortunately, it is NOT a one-stop-shop for API use. -- Rapid API actually confused me from the get go -- it simply allows you to test whether the connection is OK. Or I don't understand how to use it which is very, very possible too… IMHO You're better off going to the API website itself and mining from there or using R…
-- What IS nice about RAPID API: 1) It can provide you with a URL for API authentication (if you don't have a website or local host to use). 2) It DOES have quite a nice library of free & fremium APIs which is nice to browse/double check/search for other interesting datasets (but again I couldn't figure out how to actually see the data from there) 3) And 3) It does provide a dashboard for your API Calls - which will help you stay within limits (provided you do it thru them though I think). So overall, Rapid API = nice resource but NOT where you get the actual info (at least I wasn't able to figure out how), so not a panacea if that's what you're looking for (which I was).
--> For example, I will most likely repeat this for Meetup data. Also found promising API by the folks developing Robby.AI (https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/hypecal#section-overview) but couldn't find a way to get an API key to their dataset - hopefully soon.
Challenge 2: Using the API / Getting your data
The end result from your effort of acquiring a token, finding an API etc should be a LINK URL that you can paste into your browser which will show you the data that you want in an ugly, unformatted way.

Wowza! #I realized at this point that I needed venue info so I can get the exact locations of all these events -- if you need more detail, it is very easy to get with the &expand=[varName] from the API if you are sure these variables exist.
Challenge 4: Getting something useful out of the data
After R manipulations .. Save as CSV - convert to Excel (Tableau doesn't read it as a text file) - Open in Tableau - Visualization here.
Obviously, the result is not as good as the EB interface or web experience. It's not supposed to be.
What this allows me to do is: • Mine events that I'm interested in and create a list for myself without having to copy paste all this information into a spreadsheet • Visualize the data in any shape or form I wish • Connect and merge with other data sources, like Meetup API, potentially my calendar data etc.
