I over analysed the Carol/Daryl promo vids

I'm back again with another over-analysis that no one asked for, but I'm really excited about this one, and I think you guys will love it, too.

Grab yourself a cup of tea because this might be a long one.

These are the two vids I'll be breaking down and discussing:

Daryl's version on the right came out in August, but I didn't think much of his until I saw Carol's version on the left that came out this week. The puzzle pieces started to come together and a trend emerged.

Firstly, for context, below are the paintings at the start of each of their promo vids respectively:

Both these Paintings are by Gustave Dore. Carol's painting (left) is called The Angel Appearing to Balaam, and Daryl's (right) is called After the Shipwreck.

Let's start with Daryl's After the Shipwreck.

This painting was made as an illustration of a poem called The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, published in 1875, specifically a scene set at the end of the poem where the Mariner loses his entire crew and is stranded and forced to navigate the seas alone for seven days and nights.

Parallel with Daryl, being taken away from his family/home, getting lost at sea, and being forced to navigate through France on his own, trying to find a way home.

The painting is of the moment the masts of the Mariner's ship disappear underwater, which can be seen in the water to the left.

Parallel with Daryl having to watch that boat that would take him home leave without him.

A pilot and his son see the Mariner in his lifeboat, but they assume he's dead. When the Mariner gets up and grabs the oars, the men think he must be a devil, because they don't believe any man could have survived that.

Parallel with Carol thinking Daryl is dead when she runs into a walker that looks just like him during a scene in 02x01 (according to a leaked script), and later finds out that he's alive and not being able to believe her eyes.

A dark figure is seen at the helm of the lifeboat, presumed to be the Holy Hermit, symbolising the misery awaiting the Mariner on shore.

Parallel with the struggles Daryl experiences in France and his desperation to return home.

Now, for Carol's The Angel Appearing to Balaam.

This painting is an illustration of a story told in the Bible (Book of Numbers, ch: 22-24), which, to summarise, is about a man named Balaam, who, against God's wishes, goes on a mission given to him by the King of Moab, so God sends him an Angel, who meets him on his route and sets him back on the right path that God wanted him on all along. After his encounter with the Angel, Balaam remains faithful to God, ignoring the constant pressures from the King.

There are so many parallels here, and some can have multiple meanings, but I'll point out the ones that seem most evident to me: who the people in this story represent.

God: I think it represents God/Fate/Destiny/[insert whichever divine power you can think of], and God's plan here represents the story that Daryl & Caryl were meant to be on if Daryl wasn't misled, and they hadn't been separated.

King of Moab: This person to me is Maggie; she didn't intend to separate Daryl/Caryl, but she was the one who ultimately sent Daryl on that mission, and Carol couldn't follow, therefore separating them.

Balaam: This one is clearly Daryl; he accepts the mission from Maggie, leaving Carol behind, thinking he'd be back in no time, which, unbeknownst to him, would end up being a mistake he'd regret greatly.

The Angel: It's clear as day in the actual promo video that Carol is the angel. As the image of the angel fades, Carol appears in its place. She will be the one to go out, find Daryl on his lost path, save him, and help him return to where he was always meant to be, with her, with his Home.

The day I visited Prince Silvio's private island at his invitation was the perfect day for going out. There was not a cloud in sight.

Emma: Wow! This island's so beautiful!

With the glittering sea, and the fragrant and lush forest, I break out into a smile at the breathtaking view. Nokto smiles in response.

Nokto: Yeah, beautiful.

Even Nokto's smile, which I had seen dozens of times already, somehow looked different and fresh before the blue sea.

(But even in a place like this, Nokto still has a hint of night...)

As I'm thinking that, alluring crimson eyes peer at me.

Nokto: Nice location to seduce you, isn't it?

Emma: N-Nokto, you're too close...!

I hurriedly turn away and am next greeted by a pair of alluring golden eyes.

Clavis: Haha. This island looks like it's worth setting traps on, doesn't it?

(It won't be any good to have Prince Silvio's island be full of traps...)

(But can I actually stop Clavis?)

While I secretly mull over this, Nokto sighs next to me.

Nokto: You'll only do this against King Highness, right? I'm going to have this girl fall for me after I seduce her in an unexpected way. Even if the mood's good, it'll be ruined by traps.

Clavis: Nope, things will be fine. After all, Emma will be traveling with me all around the island, pursuing every form of pleasure to the limit, right?

(Um...I didn't plan on either of those...)

Luke: You guys, that's enough. You're bothering Emma.

Emma: Luke!

I turn to look at Luke and he gives me a gentle smile.

Luke: Just leave those those two alone and we'll take it easy together.

(Spending time with just Luke does sound peaceful and fun, but...)

Emma: Since we all came together, why don't we-

I was going to say something like "have fun"...

Chevalier: ...

I see Prince Chevalier walking toward the villa ahead and I unconsciously shout.

Emma: Ah!

Will I be able to accomplish my original goal?

As I stare dumbfoundedly at his retreating back, I recall the day after Prince Silvio asked me to pick who to join me on the island.

After thinking over it for a night, I visited the foreign affairs faction office and told them what had happened as well as my desire to go to the island with them.

~~Flashback start~~

(It's not every day you get to spend time with the princes)

(I'd like to invite the foreign affairs faction because they're not around the castle as often)

(If we go together, I might be able to see the princes who usually work alone working together)

(It'd be a rare and valuable opportunity to get to know about the relationship between the princes, so I hope I can get them to accept my offer)

Emma: Please, will you go with me?

Clavis: Haha! I knew you'd ask me out.

Luke: A private island, huh.

Nokto: Wow, Silvio's pretty generous.

Chevalier: Ridiculous...

Emma: Um...so are you coming, Clavis?

(He was pretty enthusiastic that night when Prince Silvio invited me...)

Clavis: Of course. How could I not go to a place of supreme pleasure? Leave all the arrangements to me, okay?

Emma: Thank...you? How about you, Luke?

Luke: I'm down, but I don't think you should invite Nokto and Chevalier. I don't think they'd take you up on the invitation.

(That's true. I don't think I can simply invite them either)

(I got it!)

Nokto: Wha~t? You're looking at me all fired up. I don't care much about the island. But if you join me in bed...

(Maybe he's testing me...)

Emma: Staying at Prince Silvio's island has some merit for you Nokto, doesn't it? Since a lot of your business partners are from Benitoite, if they learned that you're close enough to Prince Silvio to be invited to his private beach, it'd surely make negotiations easier.

Nokto: Hmm, I'll give you credit for giving it some thought. It's true that strengthening relations with Silvio wouldn't be a bad thing. But I'm a prince so I've had a certain amount of trust since the beginning. I won't be at a disadvantage if I don't go.

Emma: Of course if you come, I'll do my best to serve you. Just not in bed.

Nokto: Ahahaha, I understand now. At first I didn't think you could convince me with just words alone. Are you trying to get me to lower my demands by suggesting benefits?

Emma: Yeah, I was wondering if you would be open to that kind of negotiation...

Nokto: Ok, sure. Yeah, that's it...let me seduce you on the island. I'll get some benefits from being able to seduce you at a different place. Sound good?

Emma: Yeah, sure.

(I'll have to be extremely vigilant...but I'm glad I was able to convince Nokto)

(Now for Prince Chevalier. I'm nervous, but it'll be fine)

(There's something "special" on the island that Prince Chevalier would be interested in!)

Emma: Prince Chevalier...

Chevalier: ...

Emma: I heard that the villa on Prince Silvio's island is well equipped to entertain guests. I'm told that there are plenty of well-known books and rare books written by Benitoite authors for book-loving guests.

Chevalier: ...

Emma: Would you like to come along?

Chevalier: I don't mind...

(Yes!)

Chevalier: Know that what you're expecting will never happen.

(Prince Chevalier saw right through me. But if I work hard...)

(If I do my best...)

Nokto: I'll live up to your expectations no matter what. It's a private island after all. If you have a situation in mind, let me know. I'll seduce you any way you want.

Clavis: I won't just "live up to" your expectations. I'll surpass them.

Luke: Emma, I'll protect you.

Chevalier: ...

(Everything will be fine...right...yeah, I'll do my best!)

~~Flashback end~~

(Back then I said I'd work hard and do my best...I can't be discouraged now)

(We've only just arrived on the island so there's plenty of time...)

As I psyche myself up, Nokto follows Prince Chevalier to the villa.

Nokto: Well, I think I'll go to the room and relax.

Luke: Hey, what about you?

Emma: I think I'll go to the room for a while.

(I need to figure out my next steps...)

Just as I thought about it, Clavis looks at my face and smirks

Clavis: Don't worry. I told you I'd take care of everything, didn't I? I have a present for you for being brave enough to choose us as your campmates.

After hinting at something, Clavis cheerily heads toward the villa.

(Present?)

Despite my doubts, Luke and I follow Prince Chevalier, Nokto, and Clavis to the villa.

Emma: Wow!

The large book case in the corner of the elegantly furnished room brings a smile to my face.

(There are so many books known for being interesting!)

(Prince Silvio's amazing. These are all hard to come across)

I spy Prince Chevalier sitting on the sofa by the window with a view of the sea, book in hand.

Emma: These books all look so interesting. It's amazing, Prince Chevalier!

Chevalier: It's not bad.

After the brief comment, Prince Chevalier turns the page and begins to silently read the book.

(If there are rare books, Prince Chevalier will no doubt be satisfied)

(And I'm excited to read all the books I've been wanting to read in such a lovely place!)

As I'm browsing the bookshelves while suppressing my excitement, I suddenly feel Clavis' gaze on me.

When I turn around, Clavis hands me a book.

Clavis: The first book you'll read here is this one. An exceptionally rare book that is a must-read to enjoy this island.

Emma: Exceptionally rare...book?

While I flipped through the pages, Clavis hands the same book to Nokto and Luke. He even places a copy on the table next to Prince Chevalier.

(It looks recently printed...)

(It's written in what looks like the most unintelligible characters I've ever seen)

(Is this book foreign?)

After checking the contents of the book, I look around and see that both Nokto and Luke have a look of annoyance despite not even opening the book.

Even Prince Chevalier, who's reading silently, doesn't even glance at the book that Clavis had placed on the table.

(Wait a sec...)

(Even though Clavis said it's a rare book, Prince Chevalier seem to be interested at all)

When I tilt my head in confusion, I hear Nokto let out a sigh.

Nokto: Listen, it's not a foreign language. It's Clavis' handwriting, okay? It's the characters we normally use.

Emma: HUH!?

(T-this...?)

Nokto: By the way, only King Highness can read it.

Nokto added as I stared at the book.

(Prince Chevalier's amazing...)

Luke: I'm sure whatever's written is garbage anyway so you don't have to read it.

Luke says while leisurely stretching. Clavis shakes his head.

Clavis: What's written is important information. It's a travel guide I made.

Emma: A guide?

Clavis: That's right. It's important to gather important information in advance to fully enjoy the camping experience. With this guide, you can see what kinds of fruit are around, what bugs are in the area, and even information about the heavy rain from a few days ago. And there's more...Look here.

Clavis opens to the page with a huge map of the forest.

(Compared to the writing, it's somewhat interpretable...)

(This forest is a lot bigger than I thought)

As I look in amazement, Clavis comes closer and whispers in my ear.

Clavis: You'll miss out if you don't enjoy this chance.

(It's true that I was so eager to learn more about the foreign affairs faction that I didn't prepare anything to enjoy camping)

Emma: Thank you, Clavis.

I smile and Clavis returns a meaninful smile.

Clavis: Let's start here then.

I look at where Clavis' pointing but...

(I can't read it...)

Clavis: It'll be noon soon. When camping, it's necessary to live off what's in the area. We can cook the fish we catch in the nearby river. One of us has to stay here in case something goes wrong. We'll prepare after-meal recreation at the same time.

Emma: Recreation?

Clavis: That's right. After filling our bellies, we must fill our hearts.

(Fill our hearts huh...)

(The idea's nice but why does it sound so disturbing when Clavis says it...)

Nokto: Clavis, I'll go look for food with Luke and the girl. Naturally, King Highness will stay here. You're in charge of recreation. We can't read this guide.

I couldn't help but stare at Nokto as he spoke in a brisk manner.

Luke: You...

Luke also looked skeptical at first, but then he soon becomes convinced and gives a small nod.

Luke: Ah, I get it now.

Clavis: Interested, aren't you Nokto? Your big brother Clavis is pleased.

Nokto waves at Clavis as he pushes Luke and me out.

Nokto: Sure, whatever. Let's go.

After making a quick exit, we walk through the forest and Nokto sits down in the shade of a tree by the riverbank.

Nokto: *sigh* What a pain. Hey, can you fish?

Emma: I've never fished before but I've read books on how to... Don't you know how to fish, Nokto?

Indeed, a common question on the forums and various social media sits is "Why is there so much pirate content for Fortune Lover if its set in a magic school?"

We here at LOGO Media Publication have thus decided to do a little digging on the internet and have come back with all the fun data you need to get a better understanding of why it is that a pirate's life is often seen as Maria's lot!

And what did Maria's voice actor say in her interview when asked about if Maria had any friends in her village? "Maria never really fit in with the villagers after her magic came in at the age of five and the people assumed she was the result of her mother having an affair with a noble. Her dad even disappeared a year later." geomaria-stan1123 That's her opinion, not official lore! The DLC they're going to release is on Golden Sands. In the first game, Old Baron Terni owns that land, and he let the Fortuna Amata make berth there as part of an unofficial agreement. You'll see when the DLC comes out that he's probably going to cameo as part of an old painting or something. Maria being Martin Campbell's daughter is as likely as them adding in a Katarina Route to a DLC!

Everywhere I look, there are pirate OCs, Pirate Captain Katarina, Pirate Maria, Maria on a pirate ship... I thought, from all of this, that Fortune Lover had pirates all over the place mc-gentlemanpirate As a lifelong fan of the Ai Fortuna Software Multiverse, I can answer this one, but it's a bit of a long story. See, back at the start, Ai Fortuna was a small company that released their first game, Martin Campbell: Gentleman Pirate. The game was very popular in its time, detailing the adventures of a young beggar child named Martin, who stowed away on a ship to get away from it all, only to be discovered and mentored by Captain Natalia Petra Campbell, sworn enemy of the undead Pirate King Black Boris Edmund Guy, who dies at his hand by the end of the tutorial. From there, it's Martin's revenge quest centered around him figuring out his place in the world of piracy, whether or not he'll be a gentleman of fortune or a cutthroat mercenary. The good end, which is the canon one, has him kill Black Boris and being proclaimed the Pirate King. Since Martin and Maria share initials, as well as having identically fluffy blond hair, a lot of fans gravitated towards the idea that Maria was his daughter with his wife, who were both mentioned in the sequel, Martin Campbell: Pirate King. (Fun fact: When Fortune Lover's first trailer came out in 2014, a lot of people even thought that Maria was Martin in disguise in a midquel game.) Eventually, when the DLC started rolling out, the first was Golden Sands, set in his usual place of berth, the eponymous island, and it was revealed he had only disappeared nine years prior, which was when Maria's father had left. This was all speculation for the longest time, until the databook revealed this was always the lead writer's plan, with the Pirate's Promise DLC having been planned to be the sequel until the studio came in and ordered Mysteries in the Magical Ministry, which did... Alright, but was not as well received as Pirate's Promise, which is currently being made into its own spinoff series. TL;DR - Ai Fortuna Software was originally a pirate game company and Fortune Lover was written by a pirate series writer, so the fans immediately latched onto the pirate game parts because of the fact that it was a loving continuation of a beloved series. marikata9430 Also because Romanceable Pirate Captain Katarina. marisofilove2020 Definitely because Pirate Captain Katarina. marydeservesbetter Lots of people thirsting for Katarina even in an old uniform and bandages and a legitimate development history lesson for the series. Fortune Fact: While Sophia Ascart and Mary Hunt were officially named at the time of the first poster of the rivals being released, they and Katarina Claes, at the time named Tatiana Terni, did not, at the time, have any set personalities, leading to a lot of fans to start to speculate. Many had naturally guessed that Tatiana would be the primary antagonist, and there had actually been some suspicion that Sophia was actually a ghost, and that Mary was secretly in love with Maria and would be a capture target. There was also a lot of speculation that Tatiana would be revealed to be a pirate or at least affiliated with them due to her being a Terni.

Bonus Fortune Fact: Fans of the Martin Campbell series had quickly taken notice of Tatiana's surname, as well as Maria's own, which is believed to be the reason why studio heads told the creator to rename Tatiana, to avoid any further incorrect announcements on fansites that this was a Martin Campbell game.

Fortune Fact: Maria Campbell's signature attire was the result of a massive server crash at Ai Fortuna Software's main office, which included Keith's original design from when he was Noelia Flores's twin, grey-haired Geordo, and Sophia With Glasses. Initially, Maria's hair had sea shells, in place of flowers, and her dress was originally navy blue, with black boots with brass buckles, and a similarly colored belt and the bow around her neck was originally a black neckerchief, all of which were meant to call to mind Captain Natalia, who wore green and had an unbuttoned greatcoat, but otherwise wore similar attire. This was likely what contributed to the fan believe that she was secretly Martin.

Interviewer: So, you said that you once met the English voice actress for Maria at a convention, and that the two of you are friends. Have the two of you ever noticed any similar issues that you have to deal with when playing Maria? Since the DLCs tend to get delayed elsewhere, I presume that she doesn't have to clear her schedule as often as you do for them...

MVA: *chuckles* No, she doesn't have to deal with that, but one thing we both learned is that we're both big fans of the first Martin Campbell game.

MVA: Yeah, so we both had the same issue, which was that this is an Ai Fortuna game, and the main character's last name is Campbell, so of course we both did the read with Maria using what the Director to this day calls "Martin Voices" whenever I do it.

Interviewer: Martin Voices?

MVA: Martin speaks differently to different people in the game, using Yamanote most of the time because that's what Natalia taught him. When he's really angry, though, he slips into his native Kyushu. In America, he usually uses RP British, but slips into some other British accent that I honestly don't remember the name of at the moment for the life of me. Martin voices are us copying that, even though Maria is supposed to talk more in a Shitamachi dialect in Japanese and a more "standardized" American accent that I also can't recall the entire time.

Interviewer: How did that work out?

MVA: If you go online and look up "Martin's Daughter Scary Flirts" or "British Maria Flirts With Katarina" online, you can see how the fans reacted to the released recordings of either of our slip-ups... I think someone actually animated the English one to include a kiss. But yeah, we both went in under the understanding that her missing dad was actually Martin, and now with all the DLCs out, we know we're right.

🚨ANNOUNCEMENT!🚨

This is the first weekly smiles!! On our Tumblr account!! I'm sure your all excited just as much as I am! But I'll give some background information for those of you who might not know what happened!

On August 1st I came on Instagram and saw a screen pop up saying "We have suspended your Instagram account " I worried do an appeal I put in all my information yada yada and Instagram Refused the appeal and our Instagram account got deleted.. fun now we're going to back up a few months! I started a thing called Weekly Smiles, where I share my week and what made me smile that week (pretty self-explanatory), and after many weeks, I had gotten up to 35 before the account got deleted, and since then, I've been filled with rage that all my hard work has gone down in the drain. It's not fun, but I have accepted it as a challenge to make it to even more weeks that I can write down! And share with all of y'all on Tumblr. I'm not even sure if Tumblr is popular, but I'm willing as this is the only app I can share my thoughts without the haunting thought of my account getting deleted. What made me smile this week?

Monday, 7/29/24 - today, we sadly had a dentist appointment which sucked, but the people there were nice! We had fun conversations about literally everything! I hated the Fluoride but survived! We also got a different X-ray, and it was cool, but sadly, we still had to get the side X-rays, which they could do, but it was certainly uncomfortable! We then laughed a bunch later on and Donny got a jackpot!!! (100,000)! Made me smile!

Tuesday, 7/30/24 - today, we heard our dad yelling since Moxie peed all over the couch, and he got fed up, but hey, we woke up early and just did laundry. We have been laughing while playing with Snapchat filters, and big Donny got a new high score of 30 million!! Super proud and it made me smile!

Wednesday, 7/31/24 - we found a new take called Animal Warfare!! I've been playing this the whole day, and it's been a blast. It made me smile! And we also got woken up to our dad yelling and cussing again, sadly, because Moxie peed all over him, his pillows, and the couch, which sucks, and it didn't make us smile..but we are finding good out of today!

Thursday, 8/1/24 - we started the day off doing dishes, and then our whole Instagram account got deleted, which sucks a$$. But we were laughing earlier and had yummy pigs in a blanket! It made me smile, but I also cried today, so not much. We have created a Tumblr and cannot wait for the first weekly smiles to come out! And the fact that there's a way bigger word limit makes me smile! As I can write longer weekly smiles!

Friday, 8/2/24 - Hello everyone! I want to tell you all about the senior sunset that we went to today! At the beginning of the event, we had a little bit of rain and lighting, so we needed to seek shelter in the beginning. When the rain settled down, we went to a sweet arrangement of sweet treats! We got a lot of yummy food and treats *as shown in the pictures!* Later on, we got real food, lol, and got a slice of pizza, or at least Sydney and Willam (my friends), and I just got a Gatorade! We had a fun time, and then we headed down to the funner area where the bracelets were originally 10$, but they had a deal, and they were only 5$! We had a blast seeing Mrs. Faircloth getting dunked! And going inside a bounce house, of course, Matthew did since I obviously cannot walk! Lol, we chilled out for a bit, Got a Mountain Dew, and watched the soccer players play a cool soccer game! *As shown on video* we then chilled until our ride arrived, and we went home around 11:00. We had a blast, and it was an amazing event! And it made us smile indeed!

Saturday 8/3/24 - today is two days before our birthday!!! We got a cool birthday card that contained 20$, and then we got to order Burger King (don't hate us Burger King haters). We got a Whopper, a large Dr pepper, a Large Fry, and an Oreo milkshake and tried a new drink called Fiery Pink Sprite thing. It wasn't the best but it also wasn't bad either. We watched the movie “Lisa's Frankenstein”. We couldn't watch the rest since it was a little bit inappropriate but we did enjoy part of the movie we could watch :) we sat and chilled and ate the rest of our food and sang! We had a blast today and it made me smile!

Sunday, 8/4/24 - IT'S A DAY BEFORE OUR BIRTHDAY 🎂!!! I'm so excited and cannot wait for more birthday festivities to begin!! I woke up at 5:38 Am which is weird since I never wake up that early! Quick update for the anon who sent accusations about aristotels—given a lack of any followup evidence, I had someone I trust go through their tag for anything fitting the accusations, and I have come to the conclusion that guilt cannot be proved, and more importantly, they should not be held to American taboos. I mean, I got into an apparently quite heated conversation about the importance of cultural context, I'm not going to go back on my word now. Think before you discourse.

And further, I am not the person to judge someone for not being 100% acceptable vanilla. I would be throwing stones from a house of glass cards; although I don't talk about most of those cards, I do, uh. Write Edward Snowden RPF. So.

Speaking of, chapter 13 is out! It's not actually any more of my own writing, as I couldn't figure out how to structure the May 7th meeting while incorporating my Official Sources. So I just put the primary sources in their own chapter, and I'm in the middle of trying to write the POVs for that chapter.

Unfortunately I write slowly (and delete things if I find a source they contradict, which is what happened to about 10k words of ch. 13 attempts), but eventually I'll finish up this fic, which will go through the end of July 2013 (Ed accepts asylum the first of August). I've casually dropped one reference to the top secret negotiations, and Bill and Jake will make appearances later in this fic, but that whole shebang is going to be in a later story (I wish I could just have it all written right now, it's so important, especially the Kerry-Lavrov axis! But alas, I'm more GRR Martin than Stephen King).

I'm introducing the Kerry-Lavrov axis in this fic (which chap 13-14 are particularly meant to do), but the payoff is going to come in the sequel, which is going to be from Aug-Sept (or -Oct bc of the government shutdown) and cover the Syria chemical strikes (I think Assad was framed, in case you're wondering. It's actually very fucking annoying trying to write about this stuff because I was happy having no opinion on the matter, but if I was going to write Obama and Putin talking about it, I kind of have to review the evidence 😔). Mid-september is UNGA, and Sept 30th is when Obama reveals to Bibi the secret US meetings with Iran. These events should resolve the Putin-Obama tension and bring us to the next phase of the story (admittedly, I don't know where to go after that; I'm thinking shorter stories, vignettes of interactions)

Have you ever considered part of the reason that Altena's writing is rather garbage is that she is part of an oppressed group (Thracians) and all the stops are pulled to make the oppressors (the Northern houses) look to be as equal or even good in the narrative?

FE4's narration straight up says that the people of Thracia WANT to be ruled by the Leonster houses AGAIN (implying this was the case before), when we know this not to be true and very unlikely for Thracians to want this. We are never shown what New Thracia looks like aside from the people being unified. But it's worth asking ourselves, unified under whose terms? Arion steps down, and Leif gets to be King. I don't think Leif would be a bad king for Thracians, but it's hard for an oppressed people to simply accept the same oppressors willingly even if they had a change of heart.

FEH Altena focuses more on her Leonster identity and simply calls out Travant for his "savage" nature. Travant, despite his flaws, is engaged in a war of liberation against his oppressors. His cause is just, and that is quite literally all that matters. The Aed Massacre and every single act of violence Thracians perform against the North, while tragic, is nothing compared to the mundane violence Thracians undergo every minute of every day for the past few decades now. If not for how incredibly loaded the word is, I'd be pressed to say it is a genocide.

Altena's character in FE4/5 exists as it does because she's "one of the good ones" and serves as a collaborator to make us forget the righteous cause of the Thracian people in favor for a nebulous negative peace where Thracians and Northerners just sit down and get along rather than any real restorative justice.

First of all, I want to compliment you on being willing to ask tough questions about the Jugdral games. I don't entirely agree with your assessment but I'm happy that people are willing to look at it with a critical eye. It's necessary to be willing to do this in order to be honest. For the rest of the answer I'll go through each of your points individually.

I actually have an unreleased essay about viewing Jugdral through an ethnographic lens which I'm planning to release later this year as part of a larger work. I won't summarize the entire essay but I don't personally think the developers intended to make a serious effort to portray prejudices in the Jugdral games. FE5 sheds more light on the relationship between the North and South of Thracia, but in FE4 I feel like there wasn't much thought put into portraying Southern Thracians as "oppressed."

Moving on, there seems to be an inconsistency here. FE4 Chapter 8 says that "the people" wish to be unified under Leonster, but FE4 Chapter 9 says that "[Southern] Thracia's people hardly offer Seliph an eager welcome." I wonder if Chapter 8 is referring to the Munster District rather than the peninsula as a whole but I couldn't find anything to support that theory of mine. I do agree that Leif's ending is not "happily ever after" and he will have difficulties unifying Thracia even with the Thracian-raised Altena being an asset to his effort. That said, I don't want to single out Leif or even FE4/FE5 for this. Most games just say "the lord ruled happily ever after" and don't go in-depth into postgame worldbuilding issues that may crop up (e.g., Marth needing to consolidate power after every other ruler in Archanea abdicates). I do see Altena as someone who would advocate for the Southerners under a unified Thracia and help cater to them rather than someone who imposes the North's rule, but I admit that's headcanon. I'd also note that FE5 does go out of its way to have August teach Leif about the suffering the Thracians go through - to me, this leads to the idea that Leif will make good on the mistakes of his father and grandfather.

It definitely does look bad that Altena calls Travant "savage" in FEH, I'll agree there. I do want to make a point that Travant is the only non-generic Thracian who really does this "savage" behavior (not counting generic bosses like Coulter). Arion does continue to fight Seliph after his father's death but that's because of him being stubborn and indecisive more than any wish to harm innocents. In FE5, Arion also acts as a sort of white knight to save Tarrah from being captured by the Empire. Then we have Dean and Eda who outright join Leif's army with Arion's consent no less. The brutality of the Kingdom of Thracia is more about Travant personally than it is about the nation at large in my opinion. I don't think the game really shows all Thracians as being bad. If my memory serves me right, the only person who says prejudiced things about Thracians as a people is Quan with the "hyenas" comment - not Leif, not Dryas, not August, not Lewyn, not even Finn.

Let me finish at your central point which is that the games look over an oppression by the Munster District and goes out of its way to make Thracia look bad. I can't say I agree with this point; in fact, I think the game does quite the opposite. Even in FE4, Lewyn delivers a lecture in Chapter 8 to mention the poverty that Thracia suffers. FE5 goes out of its way to create more worldbuilding to add justification to their animosity towards the North with the food embargos. The point of Travant is that the player is supposed to feel bad for him while still rejecting his brutality. FE4 is very on the nose with that narrative. I think it's fair to think that he isn't a complete villain; he still wants what is best for his people more than anything else. But I can't just say "he was justified because of what the North did" and leave it as that because that erases the central conflict behind Travant as a character. The player is supposed to ask whether his senseless violence is justified and it's supposed to be an open question. You can't make Travant out to be a bloodthirsty villain nor can you say that he was in the right because Quan was worse; you must retain that complexity behind Travant in order for the character to work. And that complexity does exist! It's simplistic, maybe, but FE4 and FE5 at least make an effort there to show both sides of this question. Maybe you could argue it shouldn't be pushing one answer but at least it goes more in-depth there.

As for Altena, I personally have a much bigger problem with the perceived lack of agency with regards to Arion than with her participation in the Thracian worldbuilding. The worldbuilding could be perfect but I'd still have a problem if the relationship with Arion was the same. But thank you for providing me the opportunity to answer.

ok obligatory about me section time. i'm a trophy wife who has been doing creative writing since i learned the alphabet. my husband is navy and so its always an adventure. i have a bachelors degree in communications and have lots of experience with nonprofits and marketing! i have a doggo and 2 lovely sphynx cats and i am currently in a musical for the month of august! i am a huge nerd and although i have a lot of life changes coming up, i am hoping to balance out that stress with some awesome writing friends and stories! i'm mentally ill but who isnt and i'm an introverted extrovert, i would say.

what does writing with me look like?

first off, if you aren't open to OOC chatter then i'm probably not for you. i'm sure you're awesome but i am a very loving and excitable person who will want to fangirl and share inspo and get to you know as a buddy! the best part of writing collaboratively is the collaboration part for me so i love to plot, headcanon, and overall just go back and forth! 

reply speed: multiple a day/one a day/multiple a week (AKA it all depends)

average post length: semi-literate to novella, anywhere from 2-5+ paragraphs per post, scene-dependent but the more the better!

writing wise, i write third person, past tense and i'm mostly looking for m/m and m/f pairings. i love tropes and angst and drama. romance is a must but i also love adventure and building a fantastic story! i don't write characters that are labeled 'top/bottom' or anything like that, i much prefer to create charas for the story and explore all kinds of connections! i use realistic FCs or realistic art FCs in specific settings

genre-wise, i write slice of life/realistic, supernatural (vampires & werewolves), horror/thriller (think It or Stranger Things vibes), historical fiction, apocalypse/dystopia, sci-fi, and fantasy can be discussed as well but it's my least faves!

fandom-wise, i will write OCs in a fandom universe (unless its ron weasley, i will canon ron for you pshhhh). fandoms i know enough to write in would be harry potter, stranger things, it/stephen king, lord of the rings, maze runner, hunger games... yeah. that might be it? idk. you can always ask

triggers: i don't have many, but i try to avoid writing as/against furry, non-humanoid characters, ERP, non-cis characters (i don't have experience to respectfully write this), doubling, and poly relationships

kinks/limits: i prefer NSFW to only really take up 30% or less of a story, but i'm not against smut. i am fine to keep things vanilla or talk about preferences in DMs! i'm also fine to FTB. the most important thing is the story and characters to me
