Hi so basically this was a short story I wrote for class right so that’s why it sounds like it is. If you guys want the expanded version just tell me. Sorry that the paragraphs are chunkier ://
I’m really playin with fire here, they got tumblr, man
Uhhhh I just thought some people would like ghoul boys content. It’s also told from Shane’s pov
Also read this as a crack fic bcc it def turned into one
⚠️THIS IS A PLATONIC RELATIONSHIP IT WILL NOT BE READ WITH ANY ROMANCE BCC SHIPPING REAL PEOPLE IS DISGUSTING IF I SEE ANY OF THEM SHIPPERS INTERACTING I WILL BE BLOCKING. IF SHANE OR RYAN SAY THEY ARE UNCOMFY WITH ANY FANFICTION OF THEM I WILL TAKE THIS DOWN⚠️
**i do not own any of the watcher or buzzfeed unsolved rights or anything like that**
Characters involved: Shane, Ryan, Crowley
Genre: short story(?) there’s a happy ending dw
Summary: Ryan discovers Shane is a demon then they like…go to court and stuff
Tw: mention of death, courtroom thing, Shane goes through some stuff, small fight scene
A Demon’s Tale
Look, I don't care what you believe in, but as far as I’m concerned that Dante fellow got it pretty accurate. It all started with me going undercover as a human in 100 B.C.--to tempt humanity and do other demon-y things.
For twenty years I worked diligently being a good–well, nasty–little demon. Then I got bored and traveled the world, easy when you can just teleport. Met that Jesus guy, a nice dude, and a good message he had going.
Fast forward 2000 years and there I was working as a ghost hunter with my best friend at Watcher. Our technical titles are “Paranormal Investigators”, but I digress. We basically just go to “haunted” locations and try to find evidence of the supernatural.
So that’s how I ended up standing in a “haunted” field in Ohio, halfway through Fall. Ryan, he’s my best friend, was talking to the camera explaining why this field was haunted.
“Think we’ll see a demon here?” I teased him.
“Shane, as much as I’d love to see you proven wrong, I really hope not.” Ryan nervously joked back.
I was the shows skeptic, wholeheartedly denying that the supernatural was real. Ryan, however, believed all that bologna. We kept walking further into the field until I noticed an off feeling in my throat, like trying to swallow a spoonful of honey.
My eyes scanned the brush line. Despite it being pitch black my demon eyes could see perfectly. That’s when I spotted it, there were two glowing red eyes staring at us from across the field. That wasn’t good. Apparently, some hobgoblin (a low-level demon) owned this field and did not take kindly to trespassers.
I glanced at Ryan, who was none the wiser. The hobgoblin would probably want him more than me; it was already eyeing him specifically. I needed to divert its attention toward me. Shaking my head, I sighed.
“Hey, you pathetic hobgoblin! If you want me off your field, you’re gonna have to kill me!” With confidence, I yelled in its direction.
“Shane! What are you doing? Stop!” Ryan whisper yelled.
Its beady red eyes snapped at me and with a snarl, it launched itself at me. I stumbled back in surprise but caught it by the shoulders and threw it backward.
 "̶̱̼̥̯͍̫̑͊̈́̓̑̍̆͌̄͜͝Ḏ̷͖̈̀̎ĩ̷̤̞̱̲̣̖̻̬͓̺̇̍̈́̑̆͑̚̕͜s̷̢͓͎͇̱̰̎̀̍̅͆͒͗́̊͆͝͝c̵͉̟͛͑̾͒̒̉̑̾̌̿͜e̷̯̬̻̲͉̣̓̿́̽̕͠ḑ̸̢͉͕͎͓͈̱͔̮̪͂͊͂͊̍̿̑̊͗̀ę̵̫̝̯̝̞̼̮͖̮́́̆̎̈́̍͂̾͌̽̓͝!̶̘͔̰̫̣̓̓̏̔̾͑͠"̸̪̲͚͙̖͚̞̝̤̖̜̙̀͂͒̈́̇̑͌͌̕͘͝͠   It screeched at me.
Now, it's been a while since I've had to speak Beelzebabble, but you don’t always need to speak someone’s language to understand what they’re saying.
In this hobgoblin’s case, it was saying something along the lines of ‘Leave!’ but hey, that’s just speculation. I flashed my teeth, which had grown sharp; albeit an... outdated display of dominance but it seemed like an old-fashioned guy.
The hobgoblin seemed to understand that it would lose against me no matter what. He scampered off. I turned back to Ryan who looked like he’d just seen a ghost (funny because it was a demon). The silence was deafening, I awkwardly put my hands in my pockets and rocked back and forth on my feet, clearing my throat.
“So... crazy wind, right?” It was a pathetic attempt to brush off any ideas of the paranormal.
Ryan was a deer caught in headlights. His eyes blown wide and his mouth gaping.
“Shane--are... are you a demon?” He managed to stutter out.
I pursed my lips. He was never supposed to know. No one was ever supposed to know.
Breaking my cover to a human was one thing, but genuinely befriending one was unheard of. If Downstairs ever found out about this, they’d demote me back to Imp. No more sunshine and bright Earth to live on, just blood-red skies and 10 layers of pure agony. If that little hobgoblin snitched, I could be in deep.
 “Hehe... surprise...?” I nervously laughed.
Emotions were one of those things I still can’t figure out, like the appeal of acupuncture or spicy food. I nervously wrung my hands as shock, distrust, and worst of all, fear washed over Ryan’s face. The shorter man took an uncertain step back.
“Who are you?” His voice was filled with fear but masked by hate.
“Ryan, hey it's still me, still your good ol’ pal, Shane Madej. Nothing’s changed.” I took half a step towards him.
It felt like I was trying to corral a stray dog.
 “Stay back!” His voice wavered.
I glanced around nervously; at any moment a hoard of demons could appear to drag me back Downstairs and kill Ryan.
“Ryan, look, we can talk about this later but right now we need to go. Now. Before they come back with more.” I kept my voice as calm as I could.
Ryan also glanced around, picking up on my anxiety.
“Who?” He questioned when I didn’t elaborate.
“No one you wanna meet. Come on!” I insisted and began walking back to the car.
 “No..." Ryan mumbled.
“No?” I mimicked, looking back at him.
“No!” He repeated, stamping his foot once. “No more secrets! Especially not ones that pertain to our job!”
“Ryan! Now is not the time!” I hissed.
“Shane--” He was cut off by a loud rumbling and shaking of the ground, suddenly chains wrapped around Ryan.
Two demons appeared clutching his arms, and they were gone as soon as they arrived. I whipped my head around in time to see another larger demon grab me and teleport me to Downstairs’ Courtroom. Literally. There was already a jury of demons there waiting.
“Your Dishonor, the defendant one, Shane Madej,” The ‘lawyer’ paused as the courtroom around me giggled or snorted, except for Ryan who couldn’t find the amusement in my name. “Was clearly violating several of the ‘Inferior Ideologies’ he pledged in 0 B.C.”
I kept my eyes on my claws as my leg bounced. The turkey-necked Judge raised a brow and turned to me.
“Shane Madej, how do you plead?” He asked.
It was more a formality than anything else; if you go to court in Hell then you’re doomed from the start. We got the whole ‘guilty until proven innocent’ thing going, and the defendant isn’t allowed a lawyer. Try that for unconstitutional.
“Uh, Guilty?” I responded meekly, raising my eyebrows and shrugging my shoulders.
“Well, I say that about seals it. Shane Madej, you will be burned in the bath of holy water and--” The judge was cut off by the doors to the courtroom slamming open and an out-of-breath-looking demon speed-walking to the center of the courtroom.
My head snapped up to look at who interrupted my trial.
“Your Dishonor, if I may,” His British voice rang out. “My client, Mr. Madej, was simply doing his job. As a hellion and instigator of evil-doing, breaking or ignoring rules and laws is his duty.”
He had round dark shades that covered his eyes with flame-red hair spiked forward and he smelled like old leather.
 I raised an eyebrow.
Who was this guy?
The Judge’s eyes darkened.
“Crowley.” He spat scornfully. “You seriously expect us to drop all charges on this man because you think he was ‘doing his job’.”
Wow, this guy was the real deal if the Judge had heard of him.
“No, Sir. He may not get away without punishment, but I propose a punishment rarely used, discarded by time. So old and ridiculous that even you have forgotten it.” The red-haired demon tempted.
The Jury was on the edge of their seats. This Crowley guy really knew how to entertain.
Z “I propose that Shane Madej and his friend, Ryan Bergara, be set free in exchange for Shane’s demon curse.” The Jury gasped and some lady in the front fainted.
“He can do that?” Ryan exclaimed.
The Judge’s eyes twinkled, and a sly grin spread across his face.
“It is acceptable…if Mr. Madej agrees, that is.” He challenged.
Everyone in the courtroom turned to me expectantly. My throat suddenly went dry; I gulped.
This can’t seriously be allowed, right? There’s no way.
Crowley gave me a pleading look. My eyes scanned the courtroom. Ryan stared at me, still chained to the chair. I furrowed my brow.
 “I-...I accept.” I exhaled deeply.
“Then that does it! Shane Madej by the power vested in me by the Devil himself, I strip you of your demon curse and revoke all contact with the Devil and all of his underlings” The Judge exclaimed, sounding too enthusiastic for the punishment he condemned me to.
Suddenly my vision blurred. The world around me started spinning and I felt nauseous for the first time in my life. I stumbled out of the stand, collapsing to my hands and knees.
“Shane!” I distantly heard Ryan yell.
The room dimmed as I heard ‘ooohs’ and laughter. I gasped for air, something I'd never had to do before. The air was hot and jagged like burning serrated metal slicing my lungs.
I think I screamed but frankly, I can’t remember all that much from those seconds? Minutes? Hours? It all swirls together like a whirlpool of incoherent words and images.
I looked around the room, it was so dark I wondered if my eyes were closed. As they adjusted to the lack of light, I spotted Ryan. He looked ready to scream at any moment. I stood up, steadying myself on the stand. The Jury looked horrified. Crowley looked regretful. I rubbed my head and cleared my throat.
“Ready to go, Ryan?” I flashed a half-hearted smile.
He looked concerned but nodded all the same. Somehow in the process of me turning human he had been unchained. We turned to look at Crowley.
“Gentlemen, allow me to escort you out.” He announced.
Hurriedly, he placed a hand on Ryan and I’s shoulders and immediately we were by the van we drove here in. The morning sun was just beginning to rise over the tree line. I stumbled a bit, adjusting to my newfound humanity while Ryan looked queasy and held his stomach.
 “Never...again.” He wheezed out.
“Crowley, how can I ever repay you?” I asked sincerely.
“Stay out of paranormal business the lot of ya’.” He answered quickly.
“Well, Ryan. Looks like we need to find ourselves a new job.” I said teasingly.
He just groaned and made his way to the passenger seat of the car.
“Seriously, man. I can’t thank you enough for getting me out of that pickle. Even if I'm less...me now.” I sighed.
“Shane, being a demon isn’t what makes you you. My best friend told me that, you’d be wise to listen to the advice.” Crowley responded.
 I just nodded.
“Well, by now Crowley. See you later.” I waved as I got into the driver's seat of the van.
“If all goes well, hopefully, you won’t!” He called.
I grinned at his witty comment and turned the key, starting the ignition. Ryan was already asleep and snoring lightly. The dirt path shook the car; rocks and sticks let out various noises of complaint as the tires rolled over them.
I pondered a while about the day’s events. Maybe being human was worse than being a demon, they do so many cruel things after all. I let out an amused huff as a thought crossed my mind.
To think a Man's enemies are demons, but not human beings like himself is foolish.

hxh....MUSICAL
as soon as i saw that a hunter x hunter musical from the year 2002 starring the OG 99 VAs existed, i knew i has to see this...so i set out and watched the nightmare of zoldyck (i would later find out that theres ANOTHER musical, which i plan to watch too)
luckily its all on youtube subbed! in 360 quality...oh hell yes lmao
ok i logically knew this was gonna be a musical but seeing the characters singing is like. a lot. THIS IS SO STRANGE
musical illumi is played by a woman which is interesting. shes got a good voice
i think they just panned to killua but it was so pixelated that i legitimately could not tell hvbadjkfbjkdsf
i have no idea whats going on vhbajdfhhajsdf theres a bunch of people falling over on stage...i think theyre dying? who are yall
oh shit backup dancers?
lmao illumi killed the backup dancers rip.
oh that IS killua lol. s/o to the 3 pixels that are visible
is this gonna be the zoldyck arc but a musical? lmao
OH WAIT IS THAT KURAPIKA AND LEORIO? i cant even tell lmaoooo
i can 100% tell these are fan subs lmaooo i love bad fan subs SO MUCH it makes a viewing experience even better
this is p much just a musical version of the manga/anime so far lmao i love it
the way theyre spelling zoldyck is. a lot
is every character gonna get an intro song. how much of this musical is singing and how much of it is dialogue cause theres defs a range w/musicals
lmao i love gon leorio and kurapikas interactions even here, they rlly feel like two parents being dragged around by their energetic kid
i cant even see the set at all so im just gonna assume theres like, the gate and all that behind them, but it all just looks like a dark wall to me lmao
i love singing exposition
HISOKAS IN THIS???????????????????? oh my lorddddd
OH i see now in the description that hes played by the 99 VA too lmao i love it
wow musical hisoka rlly b like [writes himself into the zoldyck family arc]
oh here we go w/the song introducing the zoldycks
damn grandpa got mad flips
this is. wild
its especially wild that alluka isnt here bc she like...didnt even exist yet at this point in the story
zoldyck family sitcom wow
i see the gon/killua romance is still going strong in the musical
oh so they did all the training and goin thru the door stuff offscreen lol
this is actually doing a pretty good job expanding on the canon stuff from this arc lol so props. espec w/showing more of killua being scared of illumi
oooh this is interesting actually, this is like....an AU where illumi is present during this arc, and how that would change things. And Also They Sing
the zoldycks are so fucked up lmao
also i feel like theres some ‘early adaptation’ character weirdness going on, like w/the grandpa, who seems much less intense here than in the anime (at least after seeing him in the yorknew arc), and milluki, who seems like a gag character here lmao
oh my god lmao is hisoka here to visit illumi?
the hilarious irony of illumi telling killua that assassins cant have friends, then going to hang out with his good buddy hisoka
kurapika is the only one here with a brain cell (for now)
ah yes hisoka and illumi doing their nasty murder flirting thing
HISOKA IS SO NASTYYYY I HATE HIM tho his actor is very good and smarmy
OH its canary!! is there uh. blackface goin on there. i cant actually tell, what with there being only 3 pixels present at any given time
really love how half of this is just the regular arc but with the characters singing abt stuff during it
the lady playing killuas mom has a rlly good screeching voice jesus lmao
ohh i love musical fighting so much
the sound fx on kurapikas sticks are cracking me up
butlers got mad cartwheels
oh theyre doing the coin thing! this is so out of order lmao
oh my god i love that theyre doing like, sick dance moves while coin flipping
ah the zoldyck messenger hawk makes an appearance. i love that thats canon and real
the 12 yr old gay romance is REAL even here
the subs seems to be translated very literally, especially in the songs, so its honestly not clear what theyre even singing about vbsjkdjhfskjfd
gon and killua singing about each other is adorable tbh. also i love how silva asks killua abt his friends and killua is like yeah i made some friends. and then only talks abt gon ahjsduhfabhskdf gayboy
ok so the zoldyck arc is like, ending, but theres still an hr of musical left so whats even gonna happen lmao. also where did hisoka go
oh no the audio and video arent synced anymore huvbhjadfbhjsakdf
oooh they asked canary to come w/them, thats cool
theyre having a party??? hvbajdsfbhasjkdf
oh shit??? what did zeburo just do to killua??? WHATS GOING ONNN lol this is UNCHARTED TERRITORY
OH GOD IT WAS ILLUMI. SHOULDVE KNOWNNN
omggg all their formal outfits....everyone cheering wildly at kurapika is cute
LEORIO AND KURAPIKA DANCING.....
the fact that both killua and gon are taller than kurapika in this is rlly funny
the idea that the zoldycks are also highly trained ballroom dancers is super hilarious to think about, even moreso when you consider how isolationist they are
seriously grandpas got mad flips
also i love leorios outfit
this feels like a filler arc tbh. and i dont mean that in a bad way!
leorio trying to get kurapika to go to the hot springs with him lmaoooo
HVDSJBJFSBFJHS HISOKAS BACK. IN DISGUISE. OH MY GOD
hisokas stage presence is fantastic gotta say
damnnnn dad zoldycks got mad flips too. guess it runs in the family
props to the actors for managing to keep their wigs on while flipping around like that
its so fuckgin funny thats hisoka just introduces himself as illumis friend, when this whole arc is all about how assassins Cannot Have Friends
so hisoka is just here trying to get family approval too huh
gon miming a fishing trip was adorable and realistic...sometimes u get skunked and It Just Be Like That
leorio is rlly tryin to shoot his shot w/kurapika and kp is just Not Realizing huh vbjsdufjbsaukjf
wow leorio breakin the fourth wall like that lmao
wow so illumi hacked killua. rude
hisoka and illumi are lowkey hilarious in this
leorio is rlly sending every signal possible to kurapika and kp is like. No
leorio: killua is a scary murder baby, but also im adopting him
kurapika singing abt how weird it is having friends after dedicating their life to Revenge(tm) is v on brand
HISOKA OH BOY
LMAOOOO HISOKA IS SUCH A FUCKING SNITCH I CANT
no wonder illumi didnt wanna tell him abt his evil plan lmaoooo he fucked up even telling hisoka that much clearly
the zoldyck siblings just staring at hisoka in confusion bc How The Fuck Did This Clown Get In Our House hvbhjdksfnjksdf
you can tell the subs are off when the audience is cracking up but you dont even see a joke there lmao
oh my goddd hisoka using bungee gum to make everyone dance is. hilarious
oh my god synchronized dancing
HVBSHDJFBJDSKFHBSJ illumi doing a dance routine independent of hisoka and hisoka being like ????? vhbjsdkhfjkjsdnfkj THIS IS HILARIOUS
supremely funny to me how illumi makes such a big point abt assassins not having friends, yet hisoka is announcing himself as illumis friend w/every given opportunity hvbhajdkdfhjskf
this feels so filler arc i love it. thats so charming to me since the 2011 anime doesnt have any filler (from what i can tell?)
kurapika and leorio rlly feel like killuas parents here lmaooo
this is all dramatic but kurapika keeps repeating what leorio says and its cracking me up hvbajhkdhfbjsk
i lov this fambly
ah, even in the musical illumi is still such a manipulative bastard
i feel like the quality just went down EVEN MORE, which i didnt think was even possible hvbhjkdsfskf. at least the audio is synced w/the video again
illumis got a good evil laugh
this is the exact brand of dramatic angsty filler content that i was hoping for in this lmao i love it
oooh more zoldycks
honestly this is more how i expected the zoldyck arc to go in canon hbshjdkujfkjsfdas
dramatic gay filler angst + somewhat incorrect fansubs = perfection
OH SHIT CANARY
BRO DID SHE JUST DIE???? OMFG
the subs keep calling illumis power ‘spells’ which seems to imply that illumi is some sort of assassin wizard rather than a nen user hvbsudhfkjsdjgf
come to think of it, what point was the manga at when this musical was written? it has to be pretty early on, maybe just as nen was being introduced
gon boutta go ham on illumi...Get His Ass
OHHHH GON DOING THE ICONIC ARM GRAB....ARM GRAB REPRISE
gon doin the good ole reliable shounen ‘punch your friend and yell at them so they snap out of a funk’ lol
i do love how typically shounen this is. friendship speeches! but delivered by SONG!
illumis main hobby is butting in at the worst possible moments
HISOKAS BACK OH BOY
hisokas playing card blocked killuas hit hvbhjakdhsfjnakdsf thats like in jojo when those manga blocked dios knives
wow the whole zoldyck squad is here
ooh forbidden zoldyck lore lmao
killua: mom u guys are lame im joining this much cooler family now. bye
i love how hisoka is just weirdly lurking around for all this zoldyck drama lmao
silva seems like such a bro in this but i feel like hes rlly not like that in canon vhauidfhbsjhdkjfk
oh nope there he goes w/the evil laugh lmaooooo
sorry dude but leorio is his dad now
gon sniffing zeburo hgbajkdfshbjkdfjnsjdk oh my god
oh hell yeah some synchronized main character finale dancing
actor showcase! everyone loves kurapika which, same
ah so the director of this musical also directed the sailor moon musicals, which i didnt know existed but of course that exists...thats funny considering the hxh mangaka is married to the sailor moon mangaka
anyways that was fun honestly!!!! i fuckgin love musicals, and musical adaptations of non-musical source materials can be like, SO different tonally, but this honestly felt like a fun filler
it was really interesting seeing something based on the canon from this early on - as i said above, some of the characterizations (like the zoldycks) seems a bit different than we’re used to, but others were spot on - like hisoka only showing up intermittently to sow chaos and do nothing else vhjkadhbfhkjdsfnj im assuming the yorknew arc hadnt happened at this point, but hisokas actions in this musical were hilariously similar to how he acted in the yorknew arc, so, props.
plus it was cool to see the ‘what if’ factor w/hisoka and illumi also being there, espec illumi interacting w/killua bc its so wildly different from how killua reacts to any of his other family members - hes clearly scared of illumi, in a way he isnt w/anyone else, and that was done well here w/the scene where illumi threatens killua’s friends to get killua to listen to him
also the angst was honestly great, and there was some REALLY sweet wholesome parts that i loved. and the music wasnt half bad either!!
i think the VAs did a great job playing the characters - hisokas VA was especially great (and i really loved kurapika too). gons hair was not very similar to how it looks in the show so it was a little more obvious that he was being played by a grown woman, but still a great performance.
anyways fun times, i love musicals and this was a fun ole 2000s filler shounen musical adaptation

GBU rewatch followup
...cleaned up, readable version, now with fewer typos and after-the-fact commentary in parentheticals.
things I am looking out for in particular:
- how to write trios
- everything that Angel Eyes does (less than I thought, it turns out; I was bang on the money with “Animal Magnetism” having him only exist for Meaningful Moments)
- the state of Eastwood’s hair (with the hat you don’t really notice it except in the desert scenes, when it is Absurd)
- some of that sweet, sweet Morricone music because it’s the one part of the film that no amount of clever writing will adequately evoke and I love it to pieces (still true)
let’s do this thing then
like, the opening credits are pure stylish flair. That can’t be a book. It’s gorgeous. It’s perfect for what it is. has nothing to do with translation to a 70s au but that is entirely, utterly besides the point
Tuco’s “I have a gun in one hand and a dead chicken in the other” will never not make me laugh
SPAIN: specifically the Spanish landscape and how gorgeous it looks. it all sort of runs together, appropriation and reappropriation and Spain standing in for Mexico…oh hello Angel Eyes,  you look a lot more impressive than Tuco does. Nice entrance.
Also we don’t actually know at first that he’s The Bad? He’s just wandering into frame like he could be the Good cowboy or something, it’s not the music that tells you. It’s the way that the guy’s family respond to his presence and just Go without saying anything. Something about Angel def. invokes silence. No wonder he and Blondie get on.
…like, this whole scene where he’s like “I am going to enjoy your delicious soup but stare at you“ is actually hilarious? Like he’s def. got a sense of humour- it’s just that everybody looks subdued with Tuco in the picture.
There’s a very thin divide between the tension of comedy and the tension of “is he gonna kill me” and Angel Eyes just straddles all over that line.
I like you, Man Eating Soup. Too bad you gotta die now.
…yeah, I think my characterisation of “bounty hunter who keeps his given word but has no qualms” is bang on the money.
last time I didn’t notice how Lee’s voice shifts to being more amused when he’s about to do something incredibly violent. Or how great his voice was at all. Like that was clearly a mistake, he’s great.
Tuco! *hearts* With a trio of men surrounding him in a triangle. ‘m sure that’s thematic.
Clint sounds like Rowdy but more terse.
Oh hell I love the way that we get closeups on Tuco staring at things. I love characters who stare at things in general (cf. Stargate and a team who communicate by looks), and Leone delivers there.
“how much you worth now” and Tuco’s just lol I dunno.
oh Tuco you theatrical hooligan nobody believes your absurd accusations. also geez I couldn’t write that many swears if I spent all day over it.
That is a DAMN sexy wanted poster.
Forgot about Blondie calling Tuco “known at the rat” part. Hmm. I wonder what that’s about?
I always forget how choreographed the duo’s escapes are, like it’s not just shooting a rope, there’s a lot of effort that go into those.
you smug thing Clint. you smug thing. (I assume this was just one of his wry looks past the camera, as he does a lot).
does trans! Angel Eyes in the 70s smoke a pipe. Yes. Yes he does.
“even a filthy beggar like that has got a protecting angel” oh Angel Eyes you has a crush. also a pretty good sense for a scam- are we meant to infer that Angel and Tuco used to play this game? (Also he has correctly assessed Blondie’s Divine Status or whatever it is that keeps him clear of disasters.)
the way that Tuco jumps on the horse is just. pure sex appeal.
“sawed off runt” Blondie gets in 1 insult but it actually means something, as opposed to Tuco doing 10,000 for the sake of the audience
I see what you did there with putting “the good” on screen just after Blondie abandons Tuco to die horribly in  a desert. I see it.
yeah, I thought I remembered Tuco saving up all the really good insults for Spanish.
(now that I know that Eli’s from Brooklyn, I can’t *not* watch a performance of a deeply pissed off New Yorker who’s in this godsforsaken desert for the dosh but refuses to budge an inch on being a fast talking SOB. The rapid fire line deliveries for sure.)
had forgotten this bit about Angel slapping around a girl….
Aw, Tuco as soon as he finds water is A. drink some and B. play with it. awww you’re adorable Tuco
must go figure out what that thing Tuco wears on his hand is. also contemplate whether the 70s one wears braces.
yeah, like, “I got dumped so I’ll pull myself together and also drink this man’s crazy red liquor and take a hat cos I need a hat” that is peak Tuco right there.
no wait that wasn’t. What is is the exquisitely judged moment where he decides that the guy will probably want the liquor to drown his sorrows afterwards and leaves it.
I am very fond of the way that the war is presented as a disaster that is Happening but which none of the three leads give a __ about. The much maligned poster got that bang on the money.
everything looks so lived in, always, even though I assume they were building sets? Why can’t American westerns of the period look This Real, did they actually build houses or what
Blondie has vividly green eyes. Right then. Tuco’s are brown.
Tuco hires some backup to help him with Blondie. that’s…smart.
I think, actually, that Blodnie’s blue circle calico shirt is something he oughta wear in the 70s. It suits.
“your spurs” like a knight, ha. That’s a terrible gag, Blondie.
why is there so much blood on Tuco’s face. what was he doing to get banged up like that.
so he’s on a stool with a noose, with a gun pointed at him, and Blondie is still not acting like this is anything serious.
ohmigod I LOVE this bit with the cannon and the house collapsing. Hah. It seriously is like Blondie’s a force of nature though
Tuco tracks Blondie by favourite cigar stubs. Also smokes them after. Tempting to borrow that. (like they’re in bed together, Tuco steals his cigar, that kinda thing)
…is he. Is Tuco wearing flares in the 1860s. Yeah I think he is.
“I brought TWO guns” lol sure you did Tuco.
And Tuco winces when Shorty dies and is it like, two against one would make things too complex for him, or he’s mad that Blondie replaced him that fast, or what’s going on here that he let another man hang like that. Blondie doesn’t seem to mind much.
black horse = black car for Tuco.
Tuco mocking Blondie’s fair skin, like yeah there’s definitely a bit of a racial thing here.
“You’ll die. Very slowly, old friend.” also I have an umbrella ain’t it pretty
I think one of the reasons I glom on this film is because for all its length there is literally something happening every single minute. Like most films have dead time when I could, you know, breathe or something, but I haven’t stopped typing since I turned this on.
(the comedy sensibility there as well. You can’t have dead air when you’re writing comedy, things have to be leading somewhere. )
course at the moment the point is “look at this very big desert with two very small people in it”...here comes the whump. Clint sure knows how to lean into it.
sweet jesus Tuco with the sun behind you there you look like some kinda avenging 70s disco angel yourself. also the headband.
here comes the celestial music. here comes the cavalry. see, when Tuco gets into a mess he has to get out of it himself, but this is the second time that Divine Intervention has saved Blondie.
…gosh it’d be funny if that watch in the stagecoach was the Few Dollars More watch. I’m sure it ain’t.
Tuco’s not very good at interrogation. I’m sort of comforted by this, because it suggests he doesn’t do it very often.
when did Blondie get to the stagecoach. seriously when. (oh right it’s Leone. movement is a free action as long as it’s off camera)
that’s twice that Blondie’s called Tuco a rat though. what is about rats for Blondie.
maximum Clint hair fluff here. why do I have a thing for heroes with daft hair. tis daft.
I don’t think that New Mexico has goat skin waterbottles? Whereas they are all over the place in Spain. Hmm.
…okay, I have missed something. Why is Tuco wearing an eye patch now? Like, did he just look at Bill and say “that’s great I’m having that”. Anyway the way he forgets and shoves it up his face to look at the wall hanging is a hoot. (he keeps doing this like a kid playing pirates)
battle between “keeping on hat” and “oh I’m praying”- hat wins. Figures.
Tuco still has a nasty cut on his face from before. Either this is very good continuity or Eli got hit by a brick during filming and it’s still healing. I honestly cannot tell.
Tuco genuinely doesn’t know nothing about Blondie’s past. Figures.
oh you *bastard* Tuco trying to exhort a deathbed confession. that’s probably his lowest moment in the whole movie actually- cos Blondie started it with the whole “let’s play who dumps who in the desert”
of course Blondie doesn’t fall for it. course he doesn’t. (I do wonder how much of this is Tuco wondering what Blondie will let him get away with.)
also there’s an implied passage of time during which Blondie thinks it’s hilarious to have Tuco fetch and carry for him. That tracks.
ohhhh and the Pablo scene like I have a lot of feels about this. mostly about the way that Tuco is genuinely happy to see Pablo and it all goes wrong, and I already write bits of this relationship into fics but aww…Pablo is genuinely disappointed. Tuco genuinely loves him.
(cannot tell whether Tuco shags a lot of girls or is angry with Pablo and wants him to think he shags a lot of girls. could go either way.)
BLONDIE WHY ARE YOU WATCHING THIS you creep
in which Tuco just straight-up makes up junk about his brother cos he has an audience. and Blondie goes along with it to the extent of giving him a cigar, and it’s- aw. actual partnership moment. for reals.
“god’s not on our side” yup, and maybe Blondie would have done something if he hadn’t been asleep? But I get the idea he’s happy to take cues from Tuco for improv.
Tuco’s “oh fuck” moment inf. relatable.
hello Angel. And our duo knows him, too.
…I, uh, honestly can’t figure out why Blondie thinks it’s a good move for Tuco to pretend to be Bill Carson. Like I honestly can’t see how they’d even think that was a thing to do unless they’d seen the movie up to this part. Like, Tuco and Blondie basically have to be plugged into the narrative to know to do anything here except keep their mouths shut and hope to get to Sad Hill at some point?
Angel Eyes is a practical bastard. Also a sergeant. heigh-ho.
these three definitely know each other and I can’t figure out how. What’s this friendship thing about? It is a mystery. (def Tuco and Angel have a past though. What kind?)
Also Tuco figures that Angel is gonna straight up poison him at first, so that couldn’t have been a wholly easy relationship.
…okay, I’ll have to have a scene where Tuco finally says “yes I think your being called Angel is a hoot”- it is, after all, Here.
Is it that Angel doesn’t like getting his hands dirty, or that it’s easier to fob off the trouble on somebody who does like it, or that he genuinely thinks that anyone less hefty than Wallace might not be able to shove around Tuco like this? mysteries.
I wonder what Blondie is thinking. The prison choir is the goddamn creepiest thing.
yeah, Blondie, you think you’re tough but I think you’d spill your guts out also if the alternative was gouging. That’s not Tuco being a coward, that’s just Angel Eyes treating the object of his crush/a stoic/the white guy better than Tuco. It’s not like there’s a Great Moral Principle at stake for Tuco not to talk or anything.
“We’re going for a ride” is like custom-built to be an Epic Catchphrase though.
…blood doesn’t puddle like that. Someone on production screwed up. (blood is always theatrical in this film. too red and technicolour.)
…where was I? Oh yes. Tuco’s now worth 3000 dollars and is proud of it.
And Wallace is enjoying hurting him. Wallace is exactly the type that Tuco doesn’t grok; hurt somebody because they hurt you, or because you’re mad at them, or they have something you want, but just for the sake of hurting, that I don’t think tracks for him.
(Tuco and Blondie’s scam sure has got around if Wallace knows it. I guess that could have been Angel who told him, but it’s…it’s more like this thing where everyone in the film knows things that were said on screen before? I’d have to do another watch to contemplate this, but the notion fascinates me.)
That “I can’t do it while you’re watching me” is almost cute. Like, obviously it’s a ploy to kill Wallace, but also, it’s cute.
Oh yes, the “we nearly killed Eli” scene”. Thank christ the man had a natural sense of self preservation.
Lots of people in this film wear sexy short cloaks. I love those. I want one of the trio to have on in the 70s, anachronistic or no- maybe Blondie? Dunno.
all three leads have a bit where they’re just spying on the other two. v. sexy.
I’d just like to note that as somebody who has infinite patience for wandering around deserted lonely locales, I love this desolation hotel scene.
YES BATH SCENE, LOVE THE BATH SCENE
…dumping in all the nice bath salts cos he can. Completely undeterred by being a naked man in a bath facing a gun. continuing with the bath afterwards…
And also Blondie knows Tuco just by the gun. That’s not tracker smarts, that’s, um, divine inspiration.
kitten. Aw, you little kitten.
the way Blondie says “old friend” Angel Eyes actually suggests that it was Tuco who met Angel first.
“So that’s why you came to Tuco”. Yeah, I love mutually necessary relationships, and this one sure counts.
“I want that blond alive” yes we know Angel. We know.
“Were you gonna die alone” oh that IS shippy.
sometimes Tuco crosses himself after a death, sometimes he doesn’t. there’s no apparent logic there.
the way that Blondie whistles and shoots a guy is max. cowboy aesthetic. also messed up.
Blondie seems cool with Tuco killing Angel. Okies.
(I guess he figures at this point that Angel will have to be waiting...)
I’d remembered the “it’s for you”. Had not remembered Tuco tearing up the paper after, but whatevers.
where does Tuco get all these hats. How? Does he just steal hats whenever he sees a new one?
Leone’s favourite trick of ‘things off camera don’t exist” is amazing. really it is. A whole army camp…
and really, this is all extra, they could just go ahead and have the cemetery duel now, but that’s not really the point.
Actually, Blondie does seem perfectly content to let Tuco do most of the talking when it needs to be done.
That whole bit with the liquor swigging- goes along with my notions of Blondie not actually being a very heavy drinker, Tuco being more enthusiastic. also I do like Tuco’s genuine “really?!” upon being told he could make colonel, like this is the first time somebody’s told him he could be something other than a priest or a bandit, and maybe he would have gone for it if he wasn’t hip deep into the 200,000 thing.
And the mutual Blondie/Tuco “this guy’s insane” looks they swap when the captain’s not looking at them, tis fab.
it’s so weird that nobody in this camp is talking…until they start yelling.
Tuco’s notion of avoiding getting killed by cannon fire is to hide as far out of frame as he can. Given how Leone framing works, this is maybe not so dumb.
it takes the entire civil war for Blondie to render a moral judgement, i. e. war is bad. I feel like he’s obscurely irritated that circumstances have forced him to profess an opinion about something.
Hang on, didn’t Blondie learn the name of the cemetery from Angel Eyes earlier? Does he actually need Tuco at this point?
Blondie next to a big case that says “explosives” is…uh, very Bugs Bunny.
…oh, yeah, it does help having a partner to blow up the bridge. Right.
it is genuinely fun, though, watching these two work as partners. They’re very practical when they want to be.
Tuco taking several minutes to gulp his way into telling Blondie his half of the secret is…interesting. Trusting. And I suspect probably saves his life later. Cos Tuco’s right and blowing up this bridge is dangerous and one of them could easily die…and he is, for once, actually doing his best to do right by his partner in a completely stupid and insane world.
lighting your cigar on the explosives is also very Bugs Bunny.
Blondie, just cos Tuco went to sleep with his arse in easy kicking position doesn’t mean you have to kick it. Also I wonder what Tuco’s whimpering there.
and the young soldier scene. I have notions about the utility of Useless But Kind Gestures that I’ve been ranting about in various 1984 postings for a while, and Blondie gets one here. Oughta contemplate that at length later.
oh look it’s the cemetery. Tuco throws away his map.
…and three minutes go clean out of my head, as they do, because the simple fact is that even with the grave name this is a ridiculous task - how do you find one grave in all five thousand? and Leone is covering for it with a mystical quasi-religious invocation to get Tuco to where we need him to be. Thing is, it works on me. Can’t talk sensibly about the Ecstasy, there is is.
The framing of Angel Eyes coming in is epic, I gotta say. First person. Have we had any first person all film?
…but Blondie, why were you having Tuco dig up Arch Stanton’s grave when it’s the wrong grave, unless you knew Angel was coming? He knows Angel’s coming is all I can think of.
also I think we’re being asked to assume that Blondie took Tuco’s gun while Tuco was asleep with his arse in the air, unloaded it, then put it back, and then kicked him awake. dang if that isn’t a sequence I would have enjoyed Leone committing to celluloid.
okay, so. Three-way.
Tuco’s thinking “if one of these people is gonna shoot me, it’s probably gonna be Angel. So I’ll shoot Angel, and Blondie probably shoots Angel too, and then we see where we are. if they both shoot me I’m dead anyway.”.
Angel Eyes, I bet, is just figuring he should get off a shot at the better shooter first, and he figures that’s Blondie.
Blondie knows who has a weapon, so he just has to spin this out and make it look good for Angel Eyes. Easy. I wonder what he would have done if it wasn’t, though?
(we aren’t ever gonna know are we)
I can’t tell who Angel Eyes is trying to shoot with his last shot. I assume it’s Blondie, but the framing makes it hard to tell?
Tuco, you hafta bring all that money back to civilisation, wrecking the bags doesn’t help there.
Ah yes. The noose. Where did Blondie even get a noose? Is it worthwhile asking the question?
I spent a long time the first time I watched this, genuinely wondering if Tuco was gonna get killed. (I didn’t want Blondie to kill him.) And I was genuinely unsure…until I realised that we were setting it up just like old times, and Blondie was gonna have to shoot him free because he always *had* shot him free, and was always going to, and it was a oroubous of a movie. Which is all the more so in the day of easy DVD rewatching.
which is not to say I didn’t quiver when Blondie levels the gun.
anyway after all he’s been through, I think Tuco’s entitled to shout that last line.
whew!
and some followups for the notes
...yeah, it definitely makes more sense for Angel Eyes to be an old acquaintance of Tuco’s (unless you’re writing a fic where Blondie is a Weird Force of Nature and trying to reconcile two different people’s connection to him is a driving force of the plot, but I’ll remember this for the Animal Magnetism sequel).
I guess that Tuco is definitely pretending to be Bill Carson, but why? How does that help them? (I assume Blondie doesn’t see the whole torture-by-Angel Eyes coming...)
Yeah, I can see Angel Eyes as someone who’s perfected his gunslinger because his hand-to-hand isn’t so hot. Tuco’s the one who’d probably win in a straight bar brawl, but unfortunately for him that’s not the movie he’s in.

hunty movie 1
sooo ruth and i watched the first hxh movie holla
me as soon as we’re done w/the yorknew arc: OH FUCKY ITS ANIME MOVIE TIME
i love anime movies. theyre so often Entertaining As Hell, and also Not Very Good. its a very fun intersection
overall this movie slots pretty easily into that category. it was a good time but nothing revolutionary. which is ok! and that makes sense bc its not canon apparently
this movie was basically the ‘killua and kurapika have Trauma(tm)’ movie lmao
we open w/killua having a trauma dream abt illumi, rehashing the stuff we saw in the hunter exam arc....we see this a few more times in the movie, and it really drives home how killua is still rlly scared of illumi and kinda just goes into a dissociative trauma state whenever illumi is around (even fake doll illumi or dream illumi, in this movie). poor kid :( :(
regrettably tho ruth and i agree that illumis outfit in this movie was pretty sexy
ok that whole beginning part where kurapikas eyes get stolen happens SO fast hvbfhdjshfsk its like ok guess thats the status quo for this movie!
jesus poor kurapika. they cant catch a fuckgin break huh
also that kid was totally the kid that was alluded to by kurapika at the end of the yorknew arc...so i guess that was included in the anime as a setup for this movie?
also apparently that stuff was based off of a short story thing the author did a while ago which is p cool
leorios terrible drawing skills is hvhbjsdfbsdfngsjkdf
also leorio is so tender w/kurapika hhhhhhh im gonna die. im gonna gay die
and gon and killua are just. tiny soulmate boyfriends ok
ah yes i see the obligatory movie original character who befriends the protag
it kinda cracks me up how hostile killua is to retz like vhbhskhdfbaj i get that its bc of Trauma and his fear of betrayal/betraying but it also reads as killua being a Jealous Gay which is kinda hilarious
ruth and i when hisoka shows up: [prolonged annoyed groaning and dismayed yelling]
hisoka literally just shows up to sow chaos and throw around information to stir shit up huh
of COURSE the villain is the former 4th spider thats like. easy choice lmao
it might just be the fansubs but i feel like there were strong implications that hisoka and 4th spider guy fucked bhjdfashfdjnakn
the most unbelievable thing abt this whole thing is that hisoka didnt kill that doll guy lmao
ohhh shit its uvo
OHHH SHIT NOBUNGA AND MACHI....its so bad but i really like the troupe members and when they show up im like !!!!!!!
machi is so cooooool
aughhhh its like....i feel bad for nobunga for having to face down uvo like this....and THEN when pakunoda shows up too :( and nobunga tells her doll ‘rest in peace now’ or something when he cuts her down....oof. but also like theyre evil murderers so im!?! conflicted?!?!
also the shadow beast guys that uvo killed showing up and then proceeding to do LITERALLY NOTHING was kinda hilarious
and damn so technically the troupe is on the same side as the main crew, what with all of them wanting to wreck omokages shit
also omokage looks like sephiroth lmaoooo
ill be honest i barely know what sephiroth looks like but ruth said this and i felt in my bones that its true
ok i gotta talk abt the kurapika backstory stuff bc OUUGHGHGHGHGH my fucking UWUS BITCH!!!!
seeing a bunch of kurta was sad....and seeing baby-er kurapika OUGH and also pairo is sooo cute and him and kurapikas friendship is so pure
kurapika is so different :( theyre like, so much more innocent and excitable....thats so damn sad bro wtf
pairo pulling some slick moves swapping that little potion thing - all while using his blindness as a cover - was so good...no wonder he and kurapika get along so well
also gotta say its even more brutal that one of the main reasons kurapika didnt get Big Murdered w/the rest of the kurta is bc pairo pulled this stunt - if he hadnt, kurapika wouldve failed the test and never would have left
also kurapika saying theyre gonna find someone who can help w/pairos eyes ;_; the similarities w/leorios backstory/motivation makes me die
and seriously im still caught up at how innocent and pure kp is oooof ough
tho still defs the kurapika we know....theyve seemingly always had a temper, what with the reaction to the dudes in the market
like, kurapika did NOT hold back...even after finding out that they were just part of the test! tho i do get it bc they insulted pairo...kurapika’s love for their friends/stalwart need to defend their friends is clearly a big thing
also the market people’s reaction to seeing kp’s red eyes is rlly interesting to me...are the kurta like, known to anybody? or are they more of a vaguely talked-about group that like, ‘probably exists’? or is it that people know abt them but not the red eyes thing? it seems like these people, if any, would know, bc this market is seemingly a day’s travel from where the kurta live....i want more kurta lore bro!!
i big love pairo helping kurapika cheat like that....such an interesting twist, and makes it obvious that theirs is a friendship of equals
anyways i loved that flashback stuff and it just drives home how absolutely fucked up and horribly sad kurapikas whole existence is, especially in this movie w/pairo’s doll being used against them
n e ways back to the non flashback stuff
i love that gon’s super nose returned for this movie omg
im just auhghghghgh gon and killua know each other so well uwu....
aaaand illumi (well, doll illumi) is back to fuck shit up for poor killua
ugh it still gets me how clearly terrified of illumi killua is...we dont really see him act like this any other time :( and the fact that doll-illumi was able to scare killua enough to get him to run away and leave gon behind (albeit briefly) was oof
gon jumping in front of killua and getting his eyes stolen instead....baby boyyyy oughhh
also can i just say thank fuck they didnt replace illumis eyes w/gons bc THAT wouldve been some serious nightmare fuel lmao
cant believe killua then ran away again and walked emo-ly on the train tracks
and THEN he saw a train coming and was like oh well :( guess ill die :/ JESUS KID
but gon w/his Big Sniff Powers comes to the rescue!!
it was so cute how gon told killua that killua didnt run and abandon him - they were working together to fight :’) gon understands killua so well
i love how the squad then squads up to fight omokage...with half of them being blind lmao
and in the half that isnt blind is leorio, who STILL doesnt know nen, and literally brings a knife to a nen fight
i totally saw the whole ‘retz is a doll and her older brother is omokage, and retz actually died a while ago’ thing coming lol but still, not bad
all omokage does is talk abt the beauty of his dolls or w/e like ENOUGH bro
kurapika fighting pairo and killua fighting illumi (AGAIN) was all so fucked up they shouldve switched opponents for less trauma oof
and poor leorio is literally no help vhhvdijfhjbashkj he just gets throw around this whole time
kurapikas fight against pairo was sad bc it was such a fucked up situation...kp did gr8 tho, i liked them saying that this isnt the real pairo, cause pairo would never say/do these things. still and extremely sucky situation to be in!
meanwhile its the gon and killua vs doll-illumi rematch...and this illumi is like, a version of illumi drawn from killuas mind/heart (or something idk, it was kinda glossed over which i understand), which means that hes extra scary and focused on telling killua how much hes just a mindless killing machine who cant have friends
but luckily we have gon here to help snap killua out of his trauma haze, which certaintly wasnt the case at the hunter exam - so it was kinda nice to see how things went w/gon around :’) they work so well together oughhhhh....and they love each other so much broo gay preteen love real
hisoka just fuckgin materializing in the house place to help sow more chaos....unbelievable
me: i bet hisoka wont want to fight doll chrollo bc its not The Same as real chrollo
ruth: no i think he will bc hes a whore
hisoka: [fights doll chrollo]
me: oh shit u right
kurapika: ok omogake its time for you to FUCKING DIE-
and then killua stops them and says that he’ll do it, be he doesnt want kurapika to kill anymore :( :( :( bro im sooo fucking sad. killua rlly b out here thinking that hes already too far gone to matter when it comes to murder, but he doesnt want his friends to end up like that, so he might as well take on that burden, because whats one more person’s death on his hands? (EVEN THO HE SAID HE DIDNT WANT TO KILL ANY MORE...but theres exceptions when it comes to saving your friend’s souls and whatnot) :( :( AUGHHH
but luckily retz comes THRU with some good ole fratricide
killua: [takes notes]
the fact that the phantom troupe just fuckgin shows up and is like oh hey its you guys. this casual enemy stuff kills me lmao i love it
then they just fuckgin LEAVE and theyre like welllll we cant rlly fight u bc of chrollo’s state so by i guess. its NOT On Sight but someday it will be! YOU TOO HISOKA DONT THINK WE FUCKIGN FORGOT ABOUT YOU.
dramatic house burning! and rip retz, saw that one comin tho
when they all went thru and said their life goals and then killua was like shit i dont have a cool definitive anime goal LMAOOOO
but THEN gon said his goals should be to stay by gon’s side UHMMM???? baby gays AUGHHHHH and killua is just like lovestruck AUGHHHH
Gays Win
then they all peace out to resume the next arc lmaoooo
and then we see flashes of other characters, like the blonde girl (who ruth and i totally thought retz was, seeing thumbnails from this movie....we were like w8 hasnt that girl not been introduced yet??? lmao)
we also see some dude w/long hair and a hat who ive never seen before but ruth went OHHH ITS SCYTHE GUY!!! so i guess hes gonna b important?? lol
and then we saw chrollo....still in the same place the squad left him vbhajfdjkahsbfkdjabhsukfdj CAN HE NOT GET DOWN FROM THERE W/OUT NEN OR AN AIRSHIP??? THATS SO FUCKING FUNNYYYYYY ARE YOU KIDDING ME
general thots:
so this was very much an Anime Movie, in that they cant like, advance to plot or develop the characters much, bc its a movie. and this one is non canon
it was enjoyable but i do feel like it was much more typical shounen then hxh usually is...like, i feel like this was made by the same people who make like, the naruto movies or w/e, and w/the same sort of approach/attitude
this isnt necessarily bad - i LIKE shounen for a reason - but it was a bit noticeable bc it wasnt quite as smart as hxh is usually, and it rehashed a lot of stuff weve already seen in this show itself
but still i think it did a good job w/what it had, and it had some good angst, and everyone was very gay which is good
the art style was SLIGHTLY wack but it wasnt as bad as i thought itd be
overall a fun time like most anime movies. didnt reinvent the wheel but i had a good time. im excited for the greed island arc, and im also disproportionately excited to watch the hxh musical bc that is a thing that exists and i MUST see it asap bc that sounds like the kind of hilarious wackiness that appeals to me specifically
so thats it...later!
