As a Hispanic fan of Hozier, I'm glad a majority of the fandom have decided to have a duscussion about the issue at hand instead of being toxic. However, I do find that on the topic of cultural appropriation in general, there is still some ignorance over which cultures "can" be appropriated. In my eyes, no one should take anything from another culture and sexualize/commercialize it, and this goes to anyone regardless of race/ethnicity. But, that's just me.

i agree that sexualizing/commercializing any culture is bad, but i do understand why people choose to focus on specific situations. not all cultural relations are equal, and if Culture A has a history of colonizing/exploiting/discriminating against Culture B, then people from Culture B are probably going to be more upset when people from Culture A portray them in stereotypical ways and take their stuff out of context. it’s kind of an extension of what Culture A was doing already.

you probably already know that, but i think it’s worth pointing out that the problem with appropriation is often more than just “don’t touch that because it’s not yours”. it’s that what’s being done contributes to that inequality.

anyhow - i’m recovering from an illness right now and i have a bunch of things happening soon (including a Hozier concert) and i’m not sure i’m going to have the energy to keep weighing in on such a difficult topic. i might reblog other posts, but i’d prefer not to be answering asks anymore. no hard feelings.
