but like if a fighting game takes up the same amount of space as a whole ass open world game then I genuinely can't fathom where the files are going. it's two player models on a stage the size of a large room. unless reptile's inner ear bones have 16k textures and more polygons than the sum total of every game that came out in 2003 idk how that could possibly work out

Weird Questions: 5, 8, 9 & 13

I ended up saving some previous asks, knowing I was going to have an AMA (Ask Me Anything) coming up. And it's an AMA weekend, so now is the time to answer all these questions! (but you can still ask me more, either cheekily anonymous, or bravely under your name). Here's a quartet from a lovely anon! I'm going to answer them in reverse order to keep the answer for the last one under a cut.

What is a subject matter that is incredibly difficult for you write about? What is easy?

Incredibly difficult: Relationships between ex-lovers. I have no exes. I married the first, last, and only person I ever dated/had a relationship with, and we have a great relationship of 26 years. My parents have been together for 47 and married for 45. The only set of grandparents I knew were high school sweethearts who married after my grandfather came back from being a POW in the Korean Conflict. It's really been the relationships prior to that where there's divorces and widows who marry three times and lots of interesting stories that come with the phrase 'it was unheard of at the time' (Great-great-grandma D, I'm looking at you being in your 60s and marrying the 18 year old farm hand as your third husband--good for you, that's a queen move right there). So I have to rely on research and what other people tell me.

Easy: Many other things, because I'm a method writer--it means I do a lot of immersive writing. Example--I started writing some years ago that Finrod knits. When I got to a point where I was writing a lot of things about Finrod, it made me realize -- I should learn how to knit so I don't just half-ass it. I have now made four blankets and many scarves and something square and very rainbow and I don't know quite what I did but I like it. Anyhow, for most things, I go have experiences. I collect realia that fits the themes/scenes. I use ambient noise while writing if I can't get to an actual place to do the writing. I've learned how to kickbox, ballroom dance, bake and decorate fancy desserts, do carpentry, make paper, make ink, make clothing, been around alllll sorts of animals (many of the random encounters with wild animals aren't a thing I can really plan, but I've had more than I can count, and they've all been useful). I have some limits, but they are few (and probably strange, honestly).

Do you believe in ghosts? This isn’t about writing I just wanna know.

Yes. I've lived in a house that had two of them, and I had a very specific encounter when I was a teenager. I was working one day at the retail counter and the father of my boss came in. There was an older woman next to him. They were sort of conversing--she was doing most of the talking, he was just making grumbly noises. They never made eye contact. She was wearing all black, including a lace cover over her hair, which is how I even was watching, because her clothing was just unusual for the time period and for an afternoon of coming into a little retail store. He eventually got her back to the door, opened it for her, she left, and he came to fiddle with something behind the counter. When I asked him 'who was that?' he looked a little shocked, but told me it was "Old Lady (name redacted)".

About a week or so later, the store owner and his wife returned from vacation. They asked me how things went in their absence and I filled them in. When the owner said 'I hope my dad didn't bother you too much', I told him no, it was fine, he was just a little grumpy when Old Lady (nr) came in. The owner was like "…are you sure that was what he said? Because Old Lady (nr) has been dead for a while."

Of course, I had to ask his father the next time I saw him. He adamently denied having said anything to me, denied having had a conversation with anyone, denied the whole thing happening. Cameras were already wiped from the week by then, but then again--I don't know if I really wanted to check them. I replay it sometimes, watching them walking around and talking, them not looking at each other, her not picking anything up or touching anything--but she did look at me at one point.

So I did go look her up eventually.

She passed away in 1992 at the age of 88.

This encounter could not have been earlier than 1996, because I started working there in November of 1995.

Every time I go past, day or night, I glance over. I guess I'm waiting for the day I see her standing in front of the store or something.

What is your darkest fear about writing?

That after I'm gone, it'll all just disappear like it was never there at all. But this isn't just a me thing--it's a 'for everyone' sort of thing. Libraries and archives make concerted efforts to collect physical and other digital copies of literature--fanfiction doesn't get that same attention--but it should. It's a record not of what was profittable, but of what people were passionate about.

Do you have any writing superstitions? What are they and why are they 100% true?

Under a cut for mentions of death:

There have been a few times I've written scenes that ended up playing out in real life later on. Usually, these weren't a big deal. But I once wrote a scene (this is all original fiction) about a character being killed, and another character (that was loosely based on myself) having to go to the family of the character who was killed and deliver the news. A very short time later -- somewhere between two weeks and a month -- my uncle died, and I had to go to my parents' house to tell my father his younger brother was dead. It was absolutely one of the worse experiences ever, to have to comfort a parent who is sobbing and just keeps saying 'my baby brother is dead' over and over.

So, you will notice, when I write about death, it's off-screen in almost all cases. And I bring everyone back to Valinor -- Elves and also a lot of Orcs and eventually even Morgoth. Someone is always hurt when someone passes away, and I know that I use Valinor as the ultimate 'fix-it' place.

These days, it can seem as if science is under assault. Climatologists are routinely questioned about what’s really causing global warming. Doctors can be disparaged for trying to vaccinate children against disease.

But for the U.S. public at large, scientists are generally seen as a trustworthy bunch. In fact, 86 percent of Americans hold at least “a fair amount” of confidence that scientists work for the public good,  according to a survey released August 2 by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center in Washington, D.C.

That’s far better than how respondents felt about what motivates politicians (only 35 percent said they were fairly confident that elected officials acted in the public interest), journalists (47 percent) or even religious leaders (57 percent). And that general trust in the goodwill of scientists has grown steadily over the last four years, from 76 percent in 2016.

But confidence falters on narrower questions of scientists’ trustworthiness. For instance:

The kind of scientist matters. Nearly half — 48 percent — thought doctors gave fair and accurate information, but only 32 percent thought the same of medical researchers. Dieticians also were considered trustworthy by 47 percent of respondents, while that number fell to 24 percent for nutrition scientists. Overall, scientists whose work involved engaging with the public tended to be more trusted than those focused on research;

How research is funded matters. More than half of respondents — 58 percent — said they are less trusting of studies financed by industry. And there’s skepticism that scientists reveal all of their industry ties: Fewer than 2 in 10 people thought scientists always disclosed conflicts of interest with industry, or faced stern consequences for failing to do so;

Sometimes, who is being asked matters. On questions of scientific misconduct, black and Hispanic respondents were more likely than whites to see it as a “big problem.” That could reflect wariness due to past cases of experiments being conducted without patients’ consent, such as the decades-long Tuskegee Study in which hundreds of black men with syphilis were denied treatment (SN: 3/1/75, p. 134), the Pew report notes. Or it could reflect the fact that, when it comes to environmental justice, these communities are often more likely to be affected by unchecked pollution (SN: 12/6/97, p. 366).

“The issue of trust in scientists is part of a broader conversation that society is having on the role and value of experts,” says Cary Funk, the director of Pew’s science and society research. “What we wanted to do was get a look at the potential sources of mistrust.”

Conducted from January 7 to January 21, the survey questioned 4,464 randomly selected adults who are demographically representative of the U.S. population, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.9 percentage points. It focused on three scientific fields: medicine, nutrition and environment. But it did not look at specific topics that have become highly politicized, for example, childhood vaccination campaigns (SN: 6/8/19, p. 16) or climate change (SN Online: 7/28/17).

Trust us

When it comes to overall confidence that professionals act in the public good, scientists scored the highest among respondents, followed closely by the military. Trust in the motivations of journalists and politicians trailed, by comparison.

The growing trust in scientists is “really great to see,” says Jacob Carter, a research scientist for the Center for Science and Democracy at the Union of Concerned Scientists in Washington, D.C. But the fact that so few people had faith in scientific transparency and accountability was “a bit disheartening to me as a scientist,” he says. There are systems in place to prevent scientific misconduct and penalties “if, for example, you’re caught plagiarizing or fabricating results,” he says.

The introduction in March of congressional legislation called the Scientific Integrity Act marks a positive step toward building public trust in science, Carter says. The bill aims to prevent political interference in scientific policy and to allow government scientists to share research with the public, among other things.

The survey also found that 60 percent of Americans believes scientists deserve a place in debates over crafting science policy — though that result reveals a partisan divide. Among Democrats, 73 percent wanted scientists at the table in policy discussions, but that fell to 43 percent among Republicans.

Still, those numbers are encouraging, especially in a national survey covering all 50 U.S. states, says Max Boykoff, director of the Center for Science and Technology Policy Research at the University of Colorado Boulder. “Empowering scientists to step into these [policy] arenas is great,” he says. “Certain kinds of advocacy, I would argue, are part of their responsibility: advocacy for facts, empirical evidence, solid methodologies.”

Overall, scientists have been more willing to step into the public arena in recent years. Thousands of scientists and science advocates joined the first annual March for Science in 2017 in Washington, D.C. (SN Online: 4/22/17). Journalists have become more interested in covering science stories, and social media is carrying messages further across society. Boykoff noted that younger scientists especially have been open to speaking about their work, which has helped to make science more accessible to the public.

And, in fact, the survey found that people overall were more trusting of research in areas that they were more familiar with. Two other key factors boosted confidence, too: whether research data was made publicly accessible and whether findings were reviewed by scientific peers.

“Trust is important to legitimacy, credibility and effectiveness,” Boykoff says. “Without trust, scientists would just be screaming into the wind.”

Among the excitement of UFC 224, one problem lingers far above the noise

Amid the bluster and drama of a fight card with 11 finishes and a gaggle of insane moments, three of the plagues of the UFC (and by extension MMA) popped up their ugly heads. This is a sport where there is no good without double the bad and as such, even after an event that was thoroughly amusing, we've gotta point out some bad. I originally intended to write about bad weight cuts and bad cornerwork but here's the deal; I've given up. Fighters are going to continue to abuse their bodies before they get to the point to get paid to abuse their bodies. California tried and it didn't work, ONE FC wanted to try and I'm not sure that's worked either. Mackenzie Dern walked into Brazil weighing 140 lbs for a fight at 115 lbs where she'd need to weigh in on Friday. From Tuesday to Friday she was going to make a conscious effort to drop 25 lbs. The scary part is that I'm sure for some fighters that's not only doable but their usual methodology of cutting weight. This isn't going to change and fighters will continue to do whatever it is they do to make insane weight cuts. I've done a complete 180 on Rocky Pennington's corner. Fighters want it that way and so ya know what? Fine. Go ahead. Go on with your bad selves! Almost every fighter I've seen is in support of what Pennington's corner did so this is a rather bad cultural philosophy in MMA that's not going anywhere until something bad happens. I'm going to stop giving myself grays about all this. Let's talk about another problem, something that HAS to be fixed and fixed in short order:

The collapse of women's bantamweight

Rocky Pennington has been in the UFC since November of 2013. That's quite a good long minute. She's had 9 fights and gone 6-3 in the organization which is absolutely a substantial and reputable number. She earned her shot vs Amanda Nunes with a four fight winning streak. All of these are to set the stage for the next part of this little study:

How many people has she beaten who are still in the UFC? 4 depending on whether Bethe Correia is still in the UFC.

4 out of your 6 wins is a stupendous number! It's a credible number of wins for a title challenger. Let's get a bit more....specific.

How many people did she beat who are still at bantamweight?

1. Roxanne and Ashlee Evans Smith now ply their craft at flyweight, Jessica Andrade is now a strawweight. She has Bethe Correia.

Rocky's last two wins? One has retired (Miesha Tate) and the other got released (Elizabeth Phillips) so you have to go back to April of 2016 to find a credible 135er she beat and even SO she won a split decision vs Bethe Correia.

All of this isn't to bash Rocky Pennington but to prove a point about how the bantamweight division has been basically capsized. The women's bantamweight division is in such a broken state that the best option for Amanda Nunes was to trot out a fighter on a near two year layoff coming off a broken leg who has one credible ACTIVE bantamweight win under her ledger. A fighter who had last fought a retiree, a released fighter and quite possibly another fighter who should be released if wins and losses were all we care about.  The other options could've been a Marion Reneau (who at the time had just one fighter who remained in the UFC on her win ledger and zero at bantamweight), Germaine De Randamie (who has pulled out of two fights in a row and is playing her craft at bantamweight) or Ketlein Veiera in a really bad match up for all. Rocky Pennington as a title challenger under these circumstances is the equivalent of when the UFC turned to Chris Cariaso as a title challenger for Mighty Mouse. You've exhausted your options and you just need SOMEBODY to do SOMETHING.

This is the state of 135 lbs, a state that's beginning to look an awful lot like the drained and picked over remains of 205 lbs. It's not entirely a lack of quality either but a lack of numbers overall and a lack of believable challengers who could justifiably generate some excitement. Marion Reneau could earn a title shot with a win over Cat Zingano----who is on a three fight losing streak with yet another long layoff thrown into that mix. So you have 1) Women not fighting enough and taking long breaks, 2) women retiring out of the blue (Miesha and Ronda are gone with GDR and Holm likely behind them sooner rather than later) and 3) the influx of new weight classes draining the already thinning talent pool.

Imagine taking any division and then removing the top 4 fighters in it. Then imagine the bottom half of its "elite" decided to all change weight classes at once. Then have the other half of the division seemingly all deciding to either go up OR down in weight.

So right off the jump you can see the reversal of fortune for 135 lbs just by the quick difference of a short by MMA time period five months. Then when 125 lbs rolls around, the division is further   drained. Not even lightweight aka the world's greatest weight class according to many could survive half of the top 6 fighters either disappearing, moving out or retiring. Imagine 155 lbs without some combination of three of Poirier, Alvarez, Khabib, Tony and Conor. It's just too much water to take on before things sink.

It's made worse by the fact that this entire operation was reliant on three megastars. As I spoke about in 2012 when they first trumpeted out Ronda and as AntiCool has written about previously, this division's reliance on Ronda was always going to be a life or death decision. Long before Ronda Rousey was selling bonkers PPV numbers, I said the division will not survive on her but the strength of the people to come after her. To its credit, the likes of Holm and Tate were able to come along and really keep the ship upright after Ronda's loss. Holm's out of town and Miesha's retired with her money----so what we're left with is Amanda Nunes and a cast of characters who 1) either have all lost to someone else in the division or b) are so nondescript as people and fighters that it's hard to get excited about them. As I asked on the DTP, would you pay money to see Amanda Nunes fight ANYBODY but Cris Cyborg? Would you pay $60 to see her headline a card vs, say, Marion Reneau? Ketlen Viera? How about Julianna Pena? After watching two back to back dull fights, who could you possibly roll out there to get fans excited about wanting to pay 60 bucks in a crowded and dead PPV economy?

Part of this falls on the UFC for sure. Their inability to develop and cultivate talent over the long term shows up here. They had a golden goose and did what every promotion does; ride it until the wheels fall off and then try to regroup afterwards. They got three 1 mil+ PPVs out of Ronda Rousey and plenty that scratched the surface of the number. I can't fault them for understanding who the draw is but I can fault them for not preparing. Then again, I'd argue that the complete evaporation of the division is something they probably didn't expect to happen nor something you can plan for. You can't plan on Miesha Tate deciding she had lost her fire in the same year Ronda lost hers for MMA. You also can't plan for Cat Zingano to disappear for a year and then disappear again for another year. You can't account for GDR's hand injury (I suppose) or for Julianna Pena getting pregnant. In some ways this is blatantly their fault and in another ways, as is so often in the MMA world, ya gotta just go "well shit happens." I'd fault them more for not being reactive enough afterwards than for not being proactive at this point.

Then there's just the fact that the division itself doesn't seem to be all that hot in any organization. It's easy to find flyweights especially overseas. That's not the same with female 135ers or 145ers.  Invicta, the presumed top feeder league for the UFC, has Sara Kaufman as its champion. We've been there and done that, right? Before that it was Tonya Evinger who didn't even make it on TUF. We can say both are good fighters and be 100% accurate. Evinger is 36, Kaufman is 32. The UFC has tried on two different occasions to find new 135ers for a TUF and both instances the bodies weren't there. The one time they did do TUF for 135ers? Of the eight women who made the show? Two remain active in the UFC (Rocky and Sarah Moras) while a third seems to have no interest in fighting currently (Julianna Pena).  The rest are either out of the org or out of the weight class entirely. If you extend it to the 16 women who FOUGHT to get on the show then that produced a scary low 25% of bantamweights with Moras, Rocky, Pena and Gina Mazany (Evinger is a 135lber but to this point she's only fought at 145 lbs in the org). A 25% hit rate on TUF is great if you're talking lightweight or welterweight. At a brand new weight class that is SCARY low and SCARY bad.  Given how hot the Ronda division was, the fact no other top org could start some kind of a 135 lb weight class is pretty scary. The Ronda MMA returns aren't there yet so we'll see what happens in a few years from now. The hope is that Ronda Rousey will have planted a love for MMA in the hearts and minds of female athletes but.....I mean we have nothing yet to really substantiate that. Taking it one step further; even if she did, what's to say they'll all be bantamweights anyways?

And lastly there's the simple fact that the depth of a division is almost 150% reliant on who the champion is. The division was pretty thin when Ronda was champion but Ronda was Ronda and she sold like Ronda sold. She basically at one point talked Jessica Eye up into being somebody people almost half assed wanted to see her fight. Bethe Correia owes 75% (AT LEAST) of her success to Ronda Rousey hyping her up as the only undefeated opponent she had ever faced plus Bethe doing her own thing with the trash talk. Ronda got people into a third Miesha fight on the premise of "I've never fought somebody three times!" A champion in many ways is as responsible for their challengers as anybody else is----and that brings us to Amanda Nunes. We can argue that the UFC could do more. I'd argue they've tried. I've argued Amanda Nunes dug herself a hole she couldn't get out of when she spent the first few weeks post UFC 207 blasting Ronda Rousey to her fans. I'd argue the hole got even deeper when she pulled out of the International Fight Week main event the day OF the show and I'd argue that she's officially come the other side of the Earth after the second Shevchenko fight at this point. The fact that the building sounded half empty when she was fighting Pennington and looked empty when she started to give her post fight speech is a scary piece of business. That's Mighty Mouse levels of panic.

The problem now is that while the UFC is normally loud enough to cover this up, Amanda Nunes is the victim of three important truths about combat sports.  One; it's not the fighter's ability that draws an audience. Two; no matter what you're told, not everybody gets to be a star. Some fighters are destined to be the best friend in the movie. Three; marketing dollars wasted on non-stars are wasted dollars because you either got it or you don't. The UFC has a champion it doesn't care, a champion it can't promote and a champion the public doesn't want ALL in a division where there is no immediate rival to spur the interest of the public. There's no Ngannou or Conor McGregor to sell her against----and even if there was? There's no middle ground to safely build that fighter up. If some new exciting brash young 135er walked through the door, how long before by virtue of just a lack of depth that fighter is fighting somebody she probably isn't anyway near ready for? What's more, how can you expect the division to advance if none of the middle of the pack fighters are fighting?

The 145 lb division has a champion who is a modicum of a draw in this PPV market. 115 lbs will never be a top level drawing belt but it's got depth, some fighters who people want to see and it's got a role as the co-main event/third title draw for "big" shows. 125 lbs will probably be used as an ESPN+ bonus of sorts while Valentina Shevchenko as champion could probably headline in Peru or Russia. The women's bantamweight division is without a draw, without depth, without youth and without real options to solve the problem. You can try to influx a bunch of new athletes into the sport (an idea I'd try) but without a real middle ground, they'll just be fighting each other or a bunch of fighters they're clearly not going to be ready for. You can try to sign each and every single regional fighter under the sun but there's an old pro wrestling theory that bringing in too much new talent at once just dilutes the talent. Besides if most of the new talent are fighters you've already whisked away (Larissa Pacheco, Kelly Faszholz, Sara Kaufman for instance) then I guess it defeats the purpose of the whole damn thing. In a division where there's a sector of your audience that hates them on principle, it's going to be somewhat transparent if you're trying to convince them that some of these fighters are not just here to fill a spot on the show.

Cris Cyborg will not be a UFC problem for much longer. 145 lbs will be out of here quicker than we realize in all likelihood. 135 lbs is here to stay and it's turning into a problem that's no longer avoidable.

Consumer Guide / No.103 /  Musician Nina Ricci with Mark Watkins. 

MW : How did you find home-schooling?

NR : I was home-schooled from 6th grade through 12th grade, and at first, I wasn’t really happy with the changeover from being in a school setting to being home-schooled full-time. Honestly, it was the best thing for me!

I was only required to do four hours of academics daily and if I finished by noon, I had the rest of the day for art and music. I had time to discover my own interests. I liked the curriculum that we used, and I was able to learn without outside distractions. I was able to spend quality time with my parents, especially my dad who was battling a terminal illness (he passed away in 2008).

I started out with video lessons that were sent to me on DVD. It was like I was watching a class in session, and once I learned how to learn on my own, I was able to school myself from my books by reading and completing the quizzes and tests.

For my grade point average and achievement, I was selected to give the Valedictorian speech to my graduating class. And yes, there were other graduates in my class, I just graduated with strangers, that’s all! 

I was also asked to sing at the graduation, and I performed my original song, ‘If They Only Knew Me’, which speaks to the hidden character and talents of those who are sometimes overlooked in the world.

I wouldn’t be who I am today if I had not been home-schooled.

MW : In what ways did studying at Berklee College Of Music help develop you as a musician?

NR : When I started classes there in the spring of 2011, I was virtually an untrained, raw talent. I had piano lessons for a few years that taught me some music theory, a few guitar lessons, and a measure of vocal training, but I had not been immersed in studying like I was when I got to Berklee.

Berklee impacted me in many ways, the most important fundamental skill set that college taught me was how to critique myself, to internalize what had been learned, and to self-hone my skills. I remember one teacher said, “we can’t ‘teach’ you anything, we can only put the information in front of you - for you to do with what you will.”

Fortunately, having been home-schooled, I was accustomed to studying independently. I had instruction from some teachers that took a special interest in me and who helped me to discover what my capabilities were and how I could increase my capacity .

Jeannie Gagné has a holistic approach to teaching voice. She helped me to bypass hurdles that I was facing as a vocalist. Jeannie really cared that I was able to succeed and achieve according to my expectations and aptitudes. She was a most helpful guide to me as I was learning to properly and healthfully sing.

Livingston Taylor helped me overcome stage fright! He teaches a class called Stage Performance Techniques. He did much to increase my awareness as a performer in regard to how a performer relates to an audience. His classes increased my confidence in my abilities as a performer.

Paul Rishell taught private lessons under the American Roots Music Program at Berklee, and he taught me to play country blues guitar. He set my picking style in order and gave me my first set of fingerpicks. It’s that kind of generosity and real care for students that makes a student go on to great things, and Paul’s teaching was invaluable to me.

MW : Why did you decide on making folk music a career? 

NR : Folk music appealed to me when I was a teenager. The aesthetic was an immediate draw. I had been mostly listening to rock music like The Beatles, Joan Jett, and Queen. My mom turned me onto Bruce Springsteen and I listened to my dad’s Springsteen cassettes. 

Listening on, I soon found ‘We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions’ and my interests took a turn. All of that big, blended Americana sound was captivating! My ears were tuned to that unvarnished sound and then I began listening to Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.

In the beginning when I was just experimenting, I thought I would be an electric lead guitarist like Brian May of Queen, now I had begun to play my dad’s Alvarez acoustic guitar and to write acoustic-based songs.  

MW : Why do you rate Joan Baez so highly?

NR :  It wasn’t a matter of “who is the best singer?”, but rather who took me away from the Nashville suburb I lived in into another world?

I was always an imaginative kid, and Joan’s voice transported me. Her way of singing and handling a song as if she was the character in it made me feel the depths of meaning the compositions contained. The ballads she sang, especially, early on in her career were gripping, and I had a lot of time on my hands to really listen and appreciate them. I was a bit like Jenny, from Forrest Gump, I wanted “to be a singer like Joan Baez.” 

Of course, we all have people we look up to, and as I was just learning, I was able to sharpen my ear through listening to Baez and then to set aside the mold to embrace my own music. 

MW : I believe you were born, raised and live in Nashville ; which country music acts & artists - past AND present - do you particularly enjoy, and why? 

NR : Thank you for asking this question! I was actually born in Atlanta, raised in Nashville. My parents moved us to Nashville when I was 18 months old. 

My dad wanted to pursue song writing in Nashville. He had talent for writing songs, but in order to provide for his family he opened a service business in the hospitality industry where he sent his employees to local venues, such as country clubs, the Nashville Symphony, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and many more. The business eventually claimed all of his time. Since my dad was from the North, and my Mom was from Atlanta, they weren’t really country music fans. 

My parents took me to see Bruce Springsteen and Tony Bennett when I was in the womb. My dad really loved the Beatles, so he was teaching me their names by the age of four. They did discover that Dwight Yoakam’s voice calmed me as a baby when I was crying.

I listened to mainstream country in the early 2000’s which was basically Sara Evans, Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, and a few others. My only claim to country music is that some people think I sound a bit like Dolly Parton, and I occasionally play bluegrass.

I like Johnny Cash, of course, and I appreciate a well-written country song, but frankly, I’m not much for “the twang.” You might call my bluff when you hear my first album ‘Designs On Me’, though, because I do utilize that sound on a couple of songs, but it’s more of a stylistic choice than a genre for me. 

Folk musicians are some of the best writers. In fact, behind many country songs that are huge hits, there is a folky from beyond Nashville who wrote a song that was pitched for a country artist.  

MW : In order of merit, what are your Top 10 favourite albums of all-time? 

NR : I have recently come to this thought. Truthfully, I am more of a lover of songs than of albums. So, if I list an album, please know that I may have liked a majority of songs, but maybe not the entire album.

MW : Tell me about your new album... 

NR : This album was meant to be! ‘Fare Thee Well: A Joan Baez Tribute’ was officially released on July 20th, 2020. 

I recorded this album in light of the fact that in 2019 Joan went on her Fare Thee Well tour and celebrated 60 years in music! Since she was retiring, I wanted to take the opportunity to thank her for the music by recording a tribute album based off of her first national release, Joan Baez. 

This year is the 60th anniversary of this iconic album, which was released in October of 1960! 

My tribute contains my renditions of the 13 original cuts from Joan Baez in the original album order. I recorded the album in simple fashion, with just guitar and voice, similarly to the way Joan’s album was recorded. 

The impact Joan had on me as a musician still shows through in my performances, although I am a very different artist. While I did not try to imitate Joan with this album, I believe it conveys my appreciation for her as well. My renditions of her songs do not stray very far from the original arrangements. 

I also decided to write a tribute song to Joan, which I call ‘Club 47/Fare Thee Well, Joan’, which is a medley. I had the title, ‘Fare Thee Well, Joan’ in mind, and I meant to write a song surrounding the idea of wishing her “farewell,” thinking of her retirement. 

As Joan was on her last tour, I was going on my first tour! 

My mom, our tour dog, Riley and I toured for all of 2019, and every spare minute was reserved for rehearsing Joan’s songs, so I didn’t seriously begin writing ‘Fare Thee Well, Joan’ until I was sitting in a motel in Venice, Florida in the middle of winter. We had already begun production in Sarasota at a tiny studio called Jump Dog Audio Productions.

Mom and Riley went out for the day so that I could work on the song without interruption. When I began writing, a completely different song than I intended was emerging with my every stroke. I was working with a half-capo and that was altering the way I played, and the tones I was working with.

I had been reading Joan’s memoir, ‘And A Voice To Sing With’, and a book about the Boston/Cambridge folk scene, ‘Baby Let Me Follow You Down’, and all of these ideas and influences served to inspire me.

The first half of the medley, ‘Club 47’, remembers where Joan began her career singing in the Club Mt. Auburn 47 coffeehouse in Cambridge, Massachusetts. 

There was a photo taken around 1959 of Joan at about 18 years old singing at the Club 47 by Stephen H. Fenerjian that inspired the imagery of the first half of the song, and that photograph is featured, with permission, on the cover of ‘Fare Thee Well: A Joan Baez Tribute’.  

Since I hadn’t intended to write this song, rather, to write ‘Fare Thee Well, Joan’, I set aside ‘Club 47’, thinking: “I like it a lot, but I don’t know what I’m going to do with it.” 

I started writing the other song which was a little more modern and not what I was expecting. I wrote in a straightforward way about how I came to know Joan’s music and how I found myself in college in Boston, treading in her footsteps in Harvard Square.

I wasn’t finished with the song, and time was passing quickly so we moved to a hotel closer to the studio so that the commute would be shorter. I took another day and finished out the song. 

I added the words : “years of concerts on the road, and leagues of fans adore you.” I wanted to fill the song with varying melodies, and this one just really touched me because I know how much her fans appreciate her. I rounded out the song with a message from me to Joan, which I hope she will hear soon. 

My whole intent with this album is to say: “thank you for the music.” 

MW : Away from making music, what are your other hobbies & interests? 

NR : Well, I once had many hobbies and crafts, but I hardly have time for anything but music these days! Music has truly become my way of life.

Poetry is my literary secret passion. I get to write things in poems that don’t have a place in my songs. Words are my interest; the interaction between syllables and evocative imagery, as well as the way lines can be set against each other in juxtaposition creating interesting bright spots really excite me. I do journal continually. I try to write the less memorable aspects of my life down, as well as the highlights and how they came about and interconnect. I endeavour to write down the details I may not remember in retrospect so that I can know what has shaped me into who I am becoming.

I sew sometimes. It’s not a passion, just something I dabble in and enjoy. During the recent quarantine, I made two 1960s-style shift dresses using a pattern and a sewing machine. 

I have the ability to draw, with an inherited gene from my dad. He had a better eye than I do, and he could draw from memory, as well as doing it on the fly. 

I like movies a lot. In the past few years, my mom and I have been watching noir films from the 40s and I am always up for a British period film like ‘Pride And Prejudice’, or an early American classic like ‘Sarah, Plain And Tall’. That’s me in a nutshell! 

MW : Where do you see yourself in five years time?

NR :  With the uncertainty of the world at this time, that is hard to say. I follow God and His plan for my life, so I am always living accordingly. I set short-range goals and sort of eat them up like Pac Man dots. I do expect to tour again, and I plan to do another album, along with various other musical pursuits. I plan to grow in my skills and to also broaden my career. I think in five years I may have a fairly good-sized fan base according to how well-received my next couple of albums are, and might be touring extensively, maybe even overseas.

#797 FLAT THROW SANDY has an imaginary exciting day !!!!

Just as I was washing my cycle for a full day fun ride, lot of things came to my mind. What can be done in a day , whether it will be fun or not, whether I will have the patience and stamina or not, etc. I left my house with a bottle of water, purse in my pocket and mobile at 6 AM in the morning. Just as I was enjoying my cycle ride, I felt that tyre was low on air. I managed to find a shop where I could fill the tyre with air.  He found that tyre was punctured as well. He repaired that too. He refused to take any money as I was his first customer for the day. I just put a Rs 50 note in his pocket and started my journey again. Cycling was fun especially in the month of December when breeze helps to clear the sweat with magic wave. After an hour of cycling, I found a playing ground where some elder kids where playing cricket. I stopped my cycle there and sat on the bench enjoying the cricket match. The ball came roaring towards me. I grabbed it and threw it flat right on top of the stumps. All were stunned. They called me over and asked if I wanted to play. I didn’t mind. They asked my name. The youngest kid there told that my new name would be FLAT THROW SANDY !!!. Well, not bad for a 42 year old !!!.  I enjoyed my stint with cricket. I bowled and batted decently. I noted down phone numbers of my new set of friends and went ahead with my journey. I stepped into MTR for breakfast where I had my favourite Chow-Chow Bath with strong coffee. Coffee in MTR is as good as it gets. I was pumped up again. Just as I came out of MTR, I saw KGF film poster in Urvashi theatre. I tried my luck and got front row ticket. I whistled along with the crowd. Single screen theatre is a different charm altogether which can’t be experienced in a multiplex. I whistled along with the crowd when Rocky made his moves. Whistle was non stop when he said “ If you are bad, I am your dad!!”. We just couldn’t hear anything for next 10 minutes. Movie was great. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I continued my cycle ride. I passed through Lalbagh West gate. I had lot of great memories of Lalbagh. We used to have family trips in the park. Park was not maintained well nowadays but it still has a charm.  I reached APS ground in NR colony.  I had lived there in late 80s and had a lot of pleasant memories. I saw a set of kids playing marbles. I dropped my cycle near the huge banyan tree and joined them. There was a person selling marbles too. I bought 50 marbles. It was fascinating to see marbles of so much varied colours. My favourite during my childhood days was full dark blue marble. It just looked royal. I started playing marbles with kids. I started off badly as I lost half of my marbles in matter of 10 minutes . Just in matter of time, I grabbed one of the marble by flat shot right at the centre of the marble. My friends there asked for my name. I told them that friends call me FLAT THROW SANDY !!. A small kid stared me from top to bottom and told “ Uncle, Are you not too old for this kind of name ??”. I couldn’t control my laughter. I took a selfie with my new friends. I gave off my marbles to them except one marble. I guess you know which marble I was referring about !!!.  I was in super thrilling mood as I didn’t think I would enjoy an all daycycling event so much. It had lot of pleasant surprises. It was about 3 PM and I wanted to grab some lunch. I went to restaurant in DVG road which served North Karnataka food. Johar roti and Brinjal Yennegayi was just yum. I felt like I needed a long nap after such a yummy food. It ended with a spicy buttermilk. I stared cycling again. I went past all the roads in NR colony where I used to go as a kid. I took some rest in Bugal rock park under the huge rocks. Bugal rock had those huge rocks where we used to slide when we were kids. Couple of my shorts had worn out (you know where!!!) when I was sliding in these rocks in late 80s. Just outside the park, I had cup of sugarcane juice . It had a tinge of lemon and mint. Taste was beyond brilliant.

It was about 6 PM. I started my ride yet again. Just when I was about to leave NR colony, Vidhyarthi Bhavan tempted me and pulled me towards it like a magnet. Yummy crisp masala dosa was served. I ate a couple of them in matter of 10 minutes. It was as good as it gets. Even my dad used to enjoy the same dish in 60s when he was doing his engineering. Nothing has changed. The taste and ambience of the hotel has remained the same. I grabbed a cup of coffee as well. I continued my ride yet again. Natkalappa circle grabbed my attention. The roads which had trees in the shape of an arc was so magical to see and feel. I used to enjoy my ride in double decker bus during 80s in the very same road. The trees was literally touching the top of the bus. I sat on the bench in Natkalappa circle just to recall those magical moments. If I would settle down in Bangalore post retirement, NR colony would be the one and only place.  This is one place in Bangalore which has not been corrupted by new age Bangalore ideas. I hope it holds its charm forever.

I started my journey back home yet  again. Cycling was so much fun. I enjoyed the evening breeze. I was cycling at pretty high speed. Near a flyover, a traffic policeman stopped me and asked “ Guru, flyover mele hoguva plan itta attva direct melegade hoguva plan itta!!!! ( Did you plan to ride over the flyover or directly fly to the sky ??) ”. I laughed out loud along with him. I told I will try to control myself.  I started to feel yet again that the tire was low on air. I went to the same shop I visited in the morning. He smiled yet again. In the background I saw a mall which was almost full . I felt that time spent in mall was hardly memorable. I have visited malls in Bangalore, Singapore, USA and even in Chennai but I couldn’t remember even one visit for longer than 2 weeks.  It has a very small shelf life in memory.  The amount I would spend on a pop corn and coca cola in those malls was equal to the amount I spent for entire day of different flavours of food. Difference in enjoyment is there for everybody to see.

Just as I reached home, my son and wife welcomed me with red eyes. My son had exams and was busy studying. I took a hot shower to relax. Just as I sat down in the corner of the sofa, my son and wife asked about the experience. I narrated the entire sequence of events. Both grabbed a pillow and threw at me with anger. They told me to take them for such a ride too.  Just as my elder son hugged me and younger one kissed me on my nose in typical fashion, I felt it was a day well spent. I would recall this day for rest of my life.  

Its not the AC environment malls but the ride around the city which I would prefer anytime, any day !!!!

I took out an insurance policy with swinton Insurance they quoted me 250.00 I agreed to this amount. I have been driving for over 12 years with no claim made against my policy. Due to the way my previous insurer only counted 5 years no claims bonus insurance that is all they have a record plus three years I was with them. Ok we've got a small problem. At present we get a car from motability, but we want to switch to owning our own car, but we have a major problem with this new all cars must be insured at all times or declared SORN scheme. The problem we have is that our motability car goes back in October. We're in a rural location so we need a car ready for when the switch over happens. At present with the motability insurance their insurance only insures one vehicle, the motability one, and can't have additional vehicles added to it. We've got a few quotes from insurance companies who have told us that when the motability lease expires they will give us the no claim discount based on the motabiity insurance, but they wont give us that discount until the motability car goes back. So what we want to do is get the new car before October, put it on the drive, check everything is ok with it, and then insure it when we start using it on the road when the motability vehicle goes back. Only problem is with this new law we can't do that without declaring the vehicle SORN. Some of the vehicles we've seen come with a few months road tax, so we don't really want to lose that by declaring it SORN, just for a few weeks (or is the tax disc still valid when you remove the SORN on the car?), we also don't want to insure the vehicle before the motability vehicle goes back as we wont get any NCB from the new insurer and that will cost us about an extra 500 in insurance (our current insurance price is about 500-600 but with 0 years no claims it goes up to around 1,000-1,100 - we have 3 years no claims with motability and I've held my driving licence for 6 years). I've read that you don't need this compulsory insurance if the vehicle is in trade, or between registered owners. That is one option, but how long after you buy a vehicle can you keep it in that status, would we be able to keep it like that for a few weeks or is it pretty much instant when we get the car. Obviously I realise I would need some kind of temporary one day insurance to drive the vehicle home after purchase.""

Hi: My 1996 toyota corolla was hit by another car in the rear on the passenger side. My car was in excellent condition, everything worked, nothing broken, no rust (paint in excellent condition as it is always in my garage at home or in a covered parking lot at my workplace), low mileage (130K), never had a problem and I am the original, sole owner and driver of the car. I was planning to keep driving it for years to come. Now the insurance company wants to total my car and what they are offering for my car /their initial proposed settlement of $3500is not nearly enough to buy another car in the same excellent, safe and reliable condition, that is not riddled with hidden problems. This presents a big problem for me as, if I cannot have my car fixed and restored to the same condition as before the crash, I would have to come up with at least $12K to $15K to buy another new safe, reliable economy car. This is an expense that was not in my plans. Also, the insurance company is pushing me to make a hasty decision and is threatening me with not paying for the car rental I needed to get (since my car cannot be driven as the tail light is broken and and rain would get in the car). Is there any way that the insurance company can be prevented from totaling my car and instead pay for properly fixing the car with good OEM parts instead of used (LKQ) parts. I got several estimates, two for around $5K and one for around $7K (this one is from an excellent body shop that has done excellent work on my other previous cars before). I'm asking cuz I now pay close to 400/month... It's like 396. - I have 3 accidents on my record (from like 2 1/2 years ago, only one was my fault). however I found out that all of them were listed on my insurance as my fault. Found out the insurance companies automatically assign fault unless you produce proof otherwise. Now one of them I got hit from behind, so that's easy to prove with police report. However, the other one guy ran red light and I hit his side. I think the police report has it as 50/50 fault since it really can't be proven either way, it's his word against mine who ran the light. Do you think I'll be able to fight that one??? I'm gonna go down to the police headquarters and get the police reports over the next few days, just wondering... Also how much would that actually save me? - My dad had a speeding ticket (90 in a 65) and he was listed as a second driver on my car, so that also brought it up. I'm going to remove him from my insurance since he rarely drives my car anymore, and has replaced his own car. - I have the defensive driving discount already. - I'm 26 years old female in NY. I drive less than 5 miles a day to work. And I drive a silver 2006 Saturn Ion in which I'm still making payments on, so I still have comprehensive. Based on all that, do you think I can find cheaper elsewhere. Where should I loook???
