You met Nick Van Owen by chance. Genuinely by chance. You’d read Dr. Malcolm's book about his experience on Isla Sorna, where Nick was briefly mentioned, but you had never dreamed of meeting the man in real life, let alone at a Dutch Bros. Remember that Dutch Bros are drive-throughs with tables for people who walk or use public transportation. They are not intended to be sat at. But you loved them on days that weren’t too hot just to sit outside and maybe get a little work done. Not to mention, the staff were extremely friendly.
“Excuse me? This seat open?” He had sort of a middle-range voice, and you couldn’t help but notice how some of his vowels had a sort of crunch to them that you found really pleasant. He was handsome and well-built but not outrageous-looking like most gym bros were.
“Yes,” You smiled, though allowing a stranger into your personal space felt odd. This public space got a lot of foot traffic, so you felt safe.
“I’m Nick,” He introduced himself, calloused hand jutting forward in greeting. You couldn’t help but notice the camera bag slung around his shoulder. “Nick Van Owen.”
“You’re a photographer? Me too. What kind do you do?”
“Documentation. You?”
“Boudoir. My job is to make people feel sexy.”
“Interesting. Making people feel sexy just so happens to be a hobby of mine.” He smiled wickedly, making you chuckle at his obvious flirting. Then it clicked. Nick Van Owen. Documentarian photographer.
“I’m sorry, I can’t help but ask - were you part of the team on Isla Sorna that preluded the San Diego incident?”
“So my reputation precedes me.” He joked, “Yeah, that was me.”
“I read Dr. Malcolm’s book. You were mentioned briefly. Can I ask - what were they like? The dinosaurs, I mean.”
“Beautiful.”
You met up regularly after that, between his assignments and work with Greenpeace. He would tell you about the places he’d seen and the people he’d met. You loved hearing his stories and his impeccable comedy. You learned that he’d moved to the Phoenix area after Isla Sorna, looking to set up his home somewhere that didn’t reflect his experience. You were good friends. But if you were just ‘good’ friends, then how come you could never sleep at night whenever he was gone on whatever assignment he was commissioned to do?
“Do me a favor; kneel at the foot of the bed facing the headboard, knees slightly apart, and hold your hair like you’re putting it in a ponytail,” You directed your client as you got in position at the head of the bed. “Soften the look just a little, like you’re home alone, wearing your lingerie just to feel sexy for yourself.”
“So this mystery man you were telling me about last time? Going anywhere with him?” Clarice asked as she followed your directions. She was a regular client that very frequently booked these sessions.
“No, He’s in Isreal currently.” You sighed, snapping your pictures and directing her to a different pose.
“Have you hooked up yet?”
“NO! We are just friends!”
“Yeah? Then why haven’t you shut up about Nick Van Owen since you met him?” Clarice challenged.
You sighed, “He’s a busy man, Clare. He wouldn’t have the time for me even if I wanted him to.”
“Well, I ship it. I'll knock some sense into him if I ever get my hands on him.”
The two of you finished your session as normal, promising Clarice she’d have her edited photos back within a week when your phone rang in your pocket.
“Hey, Nick,” You answered, stopping Clarice in her tracks. You checked your watch, “Isn’t it like 2 am there? You should be sleeping.”
“That’s not important. What are you doing right now?”
“I’m at my studio. I just finished a session.”
What is he saying? Clarice mouthed to you. You held a finger to your lips, focusing on what Nick was saying.
“My jet landed an hour ago, and I’m starving for a classic burger. What do you say, kid, are you dressed for dinner?”
He’s asking me to dinner, You mouthed back. You and Nick had casual dinners before, but this felt different. Firstly, he’d never surprised you by not telling you when he was coming home before. It was also rare that you had dinner together that wasn’t just drunk late-night Filiberto’s.
“Um,” You inspected your outfit in one of the studio mirrors, “Yeah, I can be dressed for dinner.”
“Perfect. I’m outside your studio.”
“What?” You were in utter disbelief, “What do you mean you’re outside?”
Clarice looked eyes with you and rushed out of the studio, ready to set her eyes on the man you haven’t been able to shut up about for six months. You followed quickly after, camera bag and backpack slung over your shoulder.
True to his word, Nick was waiting for you outside, all tanned from his time overseas. His arms open wide, anticipating the way that you jumped into his arms.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming home?” You asked.
“I wanted to surprise you.”
“Mission successful,” Clarice snorted before introducing herself. “Anyway, I have to go. The husband is expecting me home.”
You said your goodbyes to Clarice once again and climbed into the passenger seat of Nick’s car.
“Where are we going?”
“Nothing fancy, an Italian place called Burger Theory. Have you ever been?”
“This is a big city, Nick. I can’t say I have.” You teased.
“I heard it's nice, and I know you like food. So I figured, why not.” He was starting to word vomit now, rambling about how excited he was to be back and how much he missed the city.
“Nick, I have to ask -” You decided to rip the bandaid off, “Is this a date?”
He scratched the back of his neck. “I was getting to the asking part.”
“I’d be happy to go on a date with you, Nick.”
The burgers and brews were delicious. You and Nick had a great time talking about his time in Jerusalem. You talked about your boudoir photoshoots, and Nick joked about photographing you. Finally, you both got tired of the restaurant scene, and Nick offered to drive you both back to his apartment.
The apartment was surprisingly clean for a bachelor pad, but then again, Nick was hardly home long enough to make a mess.
“I always thought about you, you know.” He admitted as you lay next to him in bed, a movie playing that you were hardly paying attention to, “Every time I had to leave, I always thought that I was leaving you.”
“You made me laugh, Nick,” You admitted, “I always liked guys who made me laugh. Frankly, it was too easy to like you.”
“Remember that night we were playing that drinking game where you put the mustaches on the tv, and we got really drunk and ordered in Filib’s? That was when it all changed for me. You were being such a goof and talking about your last boudoir shoot, and you were just so comfortable in your skin. I fell for you right then and there.”
You remembered it well. You and Nick entertained each other most of the night by pretending to be each other boudoir sessions. Posing dorkily, trying to be sexy while super drunk. Nick had collapsed onto you after you had put him in a high-stress pose. His lips had hovered close to yours, and you wanted to kiss him so badly. The moment had passed as soon as it had started.
You adjusted yourself so you could look Nick in the eye. His warm brown eyes drew you in until your lips were a breath's width from his.
“Kiss me,” You whispered into the quiet room. His soft lips sent butterflies aflutter in your stomach. You’d never known a man who made you feel this wanted.
“Y/n,” Nick asked when you finally separated for air. “Do you wanna be my girlfriend?”
“I’d love to.”

Phoenix Tile And Grout Cleaning LLC Brings Their Brand Online
The company provides comprehensive, fast, and effective natural stone, man-made tile, and grout cleaning & restoration services in Phoenix, AZ, for both residential and commercial customers at competitive prices.
The team at Phoenix Tile And Grout Cleaning have relied solely on customer recommendations and the Yellow Pages for their success. Now, with a brand-new website and social media presence that extends across all leading platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Google Business provide an excellent opportunity for its potential and current customers to engage with their knowledge-base and better understand the industry services provided.
They say that tile is a robust and durable flooring material, but even tile begins to wear down after a while due to excessive foot traffic and can easily get scratched or become dull by dirt & grit. Also, if not cleaned frequently and correctly, the liquid spills and debris can cause stains on the already deteriorated protective layer leaving behind a dirty film that is difficult to remove. This is why professional tile and grout cleaning is an integral part of any residential or commercial cleaning regimen.
A professional tile cleaning service consists of stain removal and sealing the grout, so it doesn’t become dirty again. However, finding a legitimate tile and grout cleaner in Phoenix, Arizona, isn't as easy as it sounds. There are several companies that do not offer restoration level cleaning, and will argue that a mop and scrub brush will get the job done. Phoenix Tile And Grout Cleaning LLC has a process that is substantially more effective than most of the competition.
The company has a simple mission: to clean and restore tile, grout, and other natural stones with utmost precision and to deliver the best results for their customers. With two decades of experience in cleaning all types of tile, including the ones on the floor, shower, or outside, the highly trained technicians can make most tile look new again. Their work has been praised by homeowners and businesses all over the valley, and with their stellar results, they'll help save you time and money.
“We hope to get more public recognition for our work and show the local Phoenix community that cleaning and restoring tile and grout should never yield poor results. Instead, we can clean, restore, and seal tile and all kinds of natural stones properly — allowing our customers to get back to their everyday lives with floors cleaner than ever before.”- said Sabrina Cane
By regularly creating and sharing content about the cleaning process on YouTube, the company intends to let people know about its state-of-the-art tools, advanced techniques, services, and build trust with potential customers. In addition, Phoenix Tile And Grout Cleaning believes in complete transparency between the company and its customers. Therefore the brand shares all of its customer results and details — from before-and-after photographs to client testimonials.
As a brand that deeply cares about their reputation, they’re keeping their social media updated with helpful information, sharing images of the work they do, and helping customers make informed decisions about the right company to hire. @cleaningphx offers a wide range of services, everything from high-pressure cleaning to honing and polishing in Phoenix and the surrounding areas.

Underground Uprising’s “Artist of the Week” - D. Carter
We are back with the Underground Uprising's "Artist of the Week" and this time we have a director/videographer to showcase! D. Carter, the man behind "To the Top Visuals" is the first "AOTW" to be chosen for their skills behind a camera and after you get to know him and his work a little better, you'll be a fan or an eager artist that wants to work with this diversely skilled man from Arizona.
Where are you from? What was it like growing up there?
"I was born in Mesa, Arizona. Raised in the East valley of Phoenix, bouncing from Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and Tempe. I've been here my entire life. I moved a lot, but mostly throughout the east valley. I love AZ, it is a place I'll always represent and call home. I've met several solid people who've played huge roles in my life. I've had a lot of great memories and a lot of bad one's. But I'm sure it's like that anywhere you are from. The one thing i love about Arizona is its difference in nature. You can go from the Phoenix desert at 120 degrees and take an hour and a half drive up North and be in cooler weather and surrounded by pine trees. Growing up here has been a long experience and journey. I don't know any other place better than I do Arizona."
What kind of videos/movies/tv inspired you as a kid?
"I grew up loving a lot of sci-fi and comedy films. "Star Wars" brings out my nerdy side and i could watch those movies over and over despite how many times I've already seen them. I also loved movies like "The Matrix" , "Romeo must die", "Predator", "Alien", "Rush Hour" "Chappelle show" and stand up comedies to name a few. As a kid I was heavy into "Pokémon" and "Yu-Gu-oh!" I don't care what nobody says that was my thing. Lol. I really enjoyed movies or shows where their was a main character who was separated from the rest "The one" or they had special abilities that no one else had. Some badass "lone ninja" type stuff. Lol. I actually try implementing that on my own projects. I think it's cool."
When did “To the Top Visuals” start?
"[It] originated as "Carterora Productions" about two years ago. As I was building my portfolio as an artist going by "D Carter", I needed content. I didn't have the money to afford photo shoots or music videos all the time with what I was trying to do. I knew I needed to put things out but I was limited. I hated that feeling. I originally invested into camera equipment with a business partner who had experience in multimedia in hopes to grow as an artist and build a business shooting music videos and doing photo shoots for other artists. My partner and I had conflicting schedules and (life happened) at the time and couldn't run it full force attacking it head on together like i was intending to. So I ended up doing it by myself. I started building relationships and taking on big projects like Weddings, Corporate videos, small business videos, artist photo shoots, artist music videos etc.. I really had no experience what so ever with a camera or knew anything about it. But I did my research and learned more and more over time. I had to learn the ins and outs of a camera, a drone, editing, all while having my own style to it. It was very over whelming for a while because I was also trying to be a music artist. Then all the sudden I was a videographer and a photographer.
I've had my fair share of gigs and the experience is really what took me to a new level. Although I still am the learner and have much more to figure out. It has skyrocketed my opportunities and building relationships being able to it all. Until I met my manager, (Danielle Ellis) aka "The Matrix" We built a team together under the label "To the Top Music Management". She has helped me immensely to grow as an artist. We decided to partner and run the multimedia business I had built, together and rebrand the name to match what we had already started in To the Top Music management. To make things simpler, thus the name "To the Top Visuals".
Favorite director?
"I loved Tarantino films, Spielberg, and of course George Lucas for giving us star wars lol."
What do you both think of the current state of AZ Hip Hop?
"I think anyone can agree that Arizona is a hotspot for talent. I've met so many talented and credible like minded individuals who are all here trying to do the same thing. The driving direction in AZ hip-hop is in full acceleration. One day i believe AZ will be known for Hip hop like California, New York or Atlanta. One driving force will be Respect the Underground and what they have put on for the city, year after year. Especially with the showcasing of talent at each years Annual Hip hop festival."
Advice for up and coming creators and artists?
"My best advice, do what you love to do. Not because it's cool. If you truly love the ART and can dedicate your life to it, then take every opportunity thrown at you. I mean that as in right away. Not next week, next year, or when you're ready.. Because you will never be "ready". The time is now fam."
Biggest lesson learned in your career?
"My biggest lesson as a music artist, was to stop making music for other people. Make music that YOU like. Don't follow the trends. Separate yourself from the rest. I see to much of the same things nowadays. I also learned that this is a business, not a hobby. You need to have both a business mindset and a creative mindset or else this will be very difficult for you. It was for me. The last important thing I learned is don't listen to what people think or criticize you on about your art. And that goes for the multimedia side as well. Your art will never be good enough for some people and that's okay. You have to accept that. The ones who enjoy what you do will follow."
What are you most proud of, what is your biggest accomplishment so far?
"What I am most proud of in this journey in the music business and multimedia business is the experience itself. Never did I think 4 years ago I would be where I am today, strategizing and executing a clear vision with Mic Myers, Talika, KMRN, Genesis, and Drk Matr, all of which are a part of our label “To the Top music management” as well as hosting Hip-hop night at Good Time Charlis in Chandler. I've worked with or had the opportunity to surround myself with several successful artists and media artists such as Whitney Peyton, Sincerely Collins, Fat Belly Filmz, Shot by Dub, Delly Everyday, Bag of Tricks Cat to name a few. I've collaborated with super producer Kato on the Track, on a beat and had the opportunity to meet and learn from him. I've taken pictures of several local artists whether it be photo shoots or performance photos for groups like The Kotton Mouth Kings... The opportunities are out there.. I'm proud of my journey and I cant wait for what's next."
Who would you like to collab with in the future?
"I would love to collab with Futuristic one day, but I'm sure everyone would want that since he's one of the faces of AZ hip hop right now.. J Rob the Chief is another artist i believe is next level. I'm open to collabs with anyone who is serious about this honestly. Eventually I'd like to expand outside of AZ and collab with other we'll known artists. But overall I want to grow and help others grow too."
What’s the next move for To The Top Visuals?
"To the Top visuals has a few videos coming out that we are excited about. One of which being Whitney Peyton. She is an incredible talent and has given us the opportunity to collab with her. So stay tuned for that. Otherwise, To the Top Visuals is open for business and taking all inquiries for video, photo, beat production, studio recording, album art or cover art, or even if you need help learning the business side of music etc.. So hit us up we got you!"

Notes On: Dustin Phillips
We’re taking a bit of a different approach today! We’re talking with Dustin Phillips, from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is the current drummer for The Ataris (https://www.facebook.com/theataris/). He is also the Owner, producer and music instructor at Dustin Phillips Music (http://www.dustinphillipsmusic.com) He has done other projects not only playing drums, but guitar, and singing as well. He is multi-talented, and likes to engage his followers. If you haven’t taken the time to check him out, do it!
Dustin took the time to answer some questions we had for him. Take a few minutes and get to know a little about him.
------------------------------------------------------------------
NON: What got you started on your musical journey?
DP: My music career began with a pair of un-sharpened No 2 pencils and a counter-top. And while I can attest to the incredible support of my family since the beginning, the constant tapping drove everyone around me crazy. In December of 1990, my stepfather (Pete) was coming off the road from touring with Phil Collins. He had told the crew that he was looking forward to a nice, quiet holiday. Phil’s crew, knowing he had a son that made beats and noises with everything within arms reach, decided to play a bit of a prank. On our doorstep, arrived a box with a note “Pete, enjoy your quiet Christmas.” Inside was a set of shiny, red Reno Junior Pro drums — from Phil and his crew, to me. My family, as amazing as they are, enrolled me in drum lessons at the age of 5 and have supported me every day since. NON: Who are some of your influences? DP: Over the years, I’ve realized that inspiration and influence tend to come and go unexpectedly. While I admire and believe that there is incredible talent that rightfully gets attention, there are millions of people who possess passion and talent that are immensely underrated. That being said, there are absolutely people whose talent and style I find myself incorporating into my own art. Drummers like George Daniel (The 1975), LP (Yellowcard), Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews); Songwriters like Josh Ramsay (Marianas Trench), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters/Nirvana), Jim Adkins (Jimmy Eat World). Additionally, I am constantly inspired and influenced by my incredibly talented friends Kris Roe (The Ataris), Jay Ness (filmmaker), Claudio Rivera (drummer), Rob Freeman (producer/songwriter), Kat Perkins (musician). NON: You've had projects outside of The Ataris. Thru The Static; You Jump, i Jump; a solo, and more. What has been your favorite project so far? DP: Generally speaking, if you ask any artist/musician what their favorite or best project is, it’s almost always going to be their current or most recent. Each project I’ve been a part of in the past holds a special place for its own set of reasons. The most creatively rewarding was the You Jump, i Jump “Reckless” album.(I’m making a plug for this, I have the album, if you wanna check it out, which I think you should, message Dustin on Twitter!) My buddy Braden, who had also been in All the Right moves, and I wanted to put out an album with the sole purpose of satisfying a creative itch. We had no intention to sell a million copies, or an unreasonable dream to take over the world. We simply wanted to release a collection of music that we get didn’t fit our current projects. It was completely self-produced, a little bit all over the place, but exactly what we wanted. NON: You also produce and photograph. What other projects have you done or taken on? DP: While I wish I could get myself to just focus on one thing at a time, I’m constantly looking for different creative outlets to explore. Whether that be producing an artist of a different genre, shooting video, creating social content, I just enjoy the process. NON: How long have you been doing this? DP: I’ve been with The Ataris for 3 years, but playing drums for nearly 30. Oh dear lord, I’m getting old. NON: What advice do you have for anyone trying to break out in the industry? DP: So much of this industry has always been about who you know, but now we have this thing called the internet. My biggest piece of advice would be to document and share content, grow your own following, while also trying to reach out and network with other creatives in your field. It can be a slow, daunting process, but if you bring value and entertainment to your platform, people will follow you on your journey. And that attention can manifest into incredible possibilities. NON: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? DP: I’d like to say drumming for Taylor Swift... but ultimately, continuing to live life in a way that brings happiness not only to me, but to those around me. I don’t need “fancy.” I don’t need to keep up with “the Jones.” Every fiber in my being just longs to live a life where I can create and be happy. And whether that’s on stage, in the studio, or starting a new business — who knows? I’m always ready to allow new experiences or circumstances into my life. Never be so sure of what you want that you wouldn’t accept something better.
