‘Impressive’ Winter Storm to Sweep the U.S. Through Saturday
A sprawling, late-season winter storm was forecast to dump a mixed bag of precipitation across a wide stretch of the United States through Saturday, raising concerns about hazardous driving conditions and scattered power failures, meteorologists said on Friday.
About 70 million people from Arizona to Tennessee and up through Maine were under some sort of winter weather alert, according to the National Weather Service. The interior Northeast was expected to get the worst of the storm.
“It’s a pretty impressive storm system,” Matthew Clay, a meteorologist with the Weather Service in Burlington, Vt., said on Friday morning. “For interior New England, we’re expecting pretty much a widespread seven to 14 inches of snow.”
Light snow will fall from the Southern Plains to Wisconsin on Friday on the backside of a cold front crossing the central United States, the Weather Service said. That front will strengthen, leading to the development of a significant winter storm across the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys through the eastern part of the country this weekend.
“Snow rates of greater than one inch per hour combined with gusty winds will produce blowing and drifting snow,” the Weather Prediction Center said on Friday. “This will severely reduce visibility and make for difficult to hazardous driving conditions.”
The National Weather Service in Flagstaff, Ariz., also warned people that gusty northeast winds would continue to midday on Friday. “Some roads may be snow-covered and icy this morning, especially east of Flagstaff,” the service cautioned. “Be careful out there.”
Areas across North Texas and southern Oklahoma were expected to receive a few inches of snow through Friday morning. Similar snow totals were expected for areas around eastern Tennessee through Saturday evening, and as much as five inches of snow could fall across portions of Kentucky.
The Northeast was most likely to see the brunt of snow accumulations, forecasters said. Areas around Albany, N.Y., could see up to four inches of snow. Towns farther north could see as much as 12 inches. In Vermont, between seven and 14 inches was forecast for much of the state.
“We’re expecting very difficult travel conditions during the day on Saturday and into Saturday night,” Mr. Clay said of the upper Northeast. “We discourage travel, unless you need to do it, and also be prepared for isolated power outages as some of the snow we’re experiencing will be wet.”
One meteorologist said that it was not unusual to see a late winter storm system in March.
“March is one of those months where there are some years that we see plenty of snow and there are some years, we see next to nothing,” Torry Gaucher, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Norton, Mass., said on Friday.
“Technically, we’re in meteorological spring,” he added. “Calender-wise, we have another month before spring really arrives.”

Cities closer to the coast, including New York City and Boston, were expected to see a mix of rain and snow, with significantly less accumulation. The Boston area could see at least an inch of snow Saturday and Sunday morning.
This weekend’s storm follows a pattern of active winter weather throughout much of the South and East Coast this year.
In early January, back-to-back storms created perilous driving conditions in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, including one weather system that stranded hundreds of drivers on Interstate 95 in Virginia for more than 24 hours. The storm trapped truckers, students, families and every stripe of commuter, including Senator Tim Kaine.
In mid-January, another storm slammed the South, killing at least two people and leaving thousands without power before moving north and dropping heavy snow over parts of the Northeast and Canada. Another January storm swept through the East Coast, prompting thousands of flight cancellations and pushing the governors of New York and New Jersey to declare states of emergency. That storm dropped more than 30 inches of snow in parts of Massachusetts.
In early February, another storm slammed parts of Texas with snow and sleet, disrupting travel and power. Gov. Greg Abbott called it “one of the most significant icing events that we’ve had in the state of Texas in at least several decades.” Yet another storm followed in late February, lashing the Northeast with a mix of snow, sleet and rain.

Roll for initiative: Twin Dragon Games continues to trailblaze for games community in new spot

Twin Dragon Games can’t seem to get out of basements. But it’s a good thing.
Even though the shop is usually a flight or two of stairs down in whatever building it’s in, it is growing alongside Racine’s tabletop gaming community — most recently, by opening in its third, biggest location.
Twin Dragon started inside Not Your Parents Basement, 410 Main St., in December 2017. Then, right before the pandemic hit, it moved a couple doors over to 440 Main St., where it lived for just over a year.
On Friday, Twin Dragon hatched at its newest nest, 500 Wisconsin Ave., immediately north of Kewpee Sandwich Shop.
It’s still downtown, but roomier than ever: There’s the large main lobby and breakaway rooms for hosting tabletop games tournaments and — perhaps most long-awaited — running Dungeons and Dragons campaigns.
Twin Dragon knows how to make a basement feel like a different world, not dark and dingy but colorful and fun with friends old and new playing games together.
“We just really grew all around as a business,” said Christine Padilla, who co-owns the store with her husband, Dan Padilla. “There’s a bigger interest in gaming, everybody is ready to come back to it.”
Growing with the community
Brenden Novak has been a regular customer at Twin Dragon since the beginning. Novak, an avid player of the Pokemon card game, said he’d known how to play prior to visiting the shop, “but it was fun to play with Dan and Christine.”
Tabletop games have grown in popularity despite the pandemic shaking the ability for people to, well, play at a table together. People are still playing D&D online, many trading card game tournaments were held virtually, and those who are returning to battle face-to-face are more excited than ever.
“I think morale has gone up a lot,” Novak said. “It was a little rough when COVID was going on. But we’re going to start back up again, with a bunch of people coming back.”
A destination
Novak said the Padillas are one of the main reasons why the games community has thrived during the pandemic. “It’s definitely grown a lot with them for sure.”
Novak drives all the way to Downtown Racine from Burlington. He said he knows people coming from all over the county and surrounding areas just to visit Twin Dragon.
“People are like, ‘Oh, you’re in between Milwaukee and Kenosha, it’s perfect for me,’” Dan said. “We’ve had college students from Carthage, Parkside and even Illinois.”
And those games fans from all over the region have come to know Twin Dragon as their home, especially as it makes room for them.
“We’ve been getting a lot more people, a lot more involvement with everything. It’s just going to become a more of a community,” said James Serum-Wood, who has been a regular since 2018.
Staying accessible, affordable
If you’ve head to a big-box store recently, chances are you’ve seen empty shelves where stacks of trading cards should be. The Pokemon trading card game has been hit hard, with scalpers buying merchandise in bulk and reselling for jacked up prices, causing shortages.
The shortage means even smaller, local game stores like Twin Dragon struggle to keep product in stock. These small stores have also upped their prices from retail both to keep afloat in general during the pandemic and to profit off of supply and demand.
To combat this, the Padillas enacted limits on the amount of popular card product (not just Pokemon) each customer can buy per visit. They discouraged customers buying their products just to resell them. Upping prices is not something they believe in.
“During the COVID era, we had a lot of people just raise up the prices on everything. For us, it was more like, ‘We’ve got to keep everything the same because we want accessibility to these games,’” Dan said. “Gaming grew ... tremendously during COVID because of how it brought people together. Even if we were tempted to do something like that, we always say, ‘Our players need this.’”
“I mean, it’s sad, because a grandma or parents should be able to buy their kid Pokemon packs,” Christine said.
Dan remembered when he was a little kid and had to mow lawns just to be able to afford to play his favorite games.
“If I was cutting the lawn for $30, and I was going to spend it at a game store so that I could buy this product, and I know it’s $30 but then all of a sudden ... I go there and it’s $50? I probably won’t get it, or I’d have to ask my parents,” Dan said.
As a kid in a struggling family, asking his parents for more money was the last thing he wanted to do. That’s why keeping things affordable means a lot to him and Christine.
The next level
With their new space, Dan and Christine hope to be able to host bigger, better events, like birthday parties, regional tournaments and even charity game nights, alongside having a space for their regular players.
“We just want to grow the game,” Christine said.
Specifically, they want to focus on introducing families of color to board games and tabletop games. They’re growing a collection of games more focused on pictures over words. They are also hoping to host a board game night for foster families, and to gain sponsorships or acquire donations to be able to send those families home with a board game.
“There’s a lot of families here in Racine specifically, that are in transition of learning English better,” said Dan, whose first language is Spanish. “Comprehension was very hard for me. Then I started playing Pokemon with my brother, and it clicked.”
Christine is also planning to host ladies’ game nights at Twin Dragon in attempt to get more women interested in games.
“Women in the gaming industry have grown a lot,” Christine said. “I want to make sure that women ... feel safe in gaming. You walk into a room and usually, it’s full of guys, which is fine. But the one thing is respect. That is what we’ve pushed for the five years we’ve been open, is respect.”

Burlington County continues to offer zero-interest HELP loans to small businesses impacted by pandemic

The Burlington County Board of Commissioners is reminding local small business owners and nonprofits that interest-free loans remain available to help them recover from the pandemic.
“COVID-19 has had far-reaching and devastating effects such as most of us have never experienced,” Commissioner Deputy Director Dan O’Connell said in a prepared statement. “We have made great strides since last year, but we know that many small businesses and nonprofits are still grappling with the aftermath of the virus. We continue to provide interest-free loans to help these employers recover and grow again. “
Burlington County offers the interest-free loans through its Health Emergency Loan Program (HELP). Launched in 2020 in response to the pandemic and the economic fallout from the crisis, the program says it offers up to $ 50,000 in loans to qualified small businesses suffering from a pandemic-related emergency.
The loans are funded by $ 660,000 from federal CARES Act funds backed by the Economic Development Office of the Burlington County Bridge Commission.
The Bridge Commission is also responsible for administering the program.
Loans can be used for business related purchases, payroll, or any other expense or improvement. There are no closing costs, but according to the statement, sufficient collateral in private or commercial property is necessary to secure the loan.
To date, five Burlington County companies have received loans through the program and additional funding is still available.
On June 29, O’Connell presented a check for $ 45,000 to Wayne Trojanowski, owner of Hainesport-based South Jersey Lawns, the youngest company to get the county support.
The company has served Burlington County for 16 years and Trojanowski has lived in the county for 39 years.
“In 2020, like many small businesses, I suffered a blow and found myself in a hole that I couldn’t seem to get out of. I’ve been thinking about the future and sustainability of my company, ”Trojanowski said in the statement. “With federal funding being used by larger corporations, smaller corporations like mine left an inbox full of ‘I’m sorry, but you don’t qualify’ emails. I had to borrow high-interest credit cards, which might have helped me now, but in the end I would have sunk as the interest on the debt would get overwhelming. “
A friend said he learned about the HELP loan program and was guided through the application process by Liz Verna, the county’s director of economic development.

But the bounce back isn’t enough to turn around pre-pandemic trends. The department store sector has been in decline because of the rise of online shopping and discount clothing chains such as TJMaxx, Ross (ROST) and Burlington (BURL). Target (TGT), Walmart (WMT) and Costco (COST) also boosted their clothing offerings in recent years and hooked shoppers with a wider array of merchandise, say retail analysts.
Department store sales shrunk from $184 billion in sales in 2010 to $135 billion in 2019, according to Census Bureau data. In 2020, they plunged to $114 billion, according to the Census Bureau.
Nearly 1,000 department stores have closed since 2018, said real estate research firm Green Street. The pandemic was the latest blow. Department stores were deemed non-essential retailers and closed their stores to customers as the economy shut down last spring. Foot traffic, which makes up the bulk of sales, collapsed.
The dropoff tipped some department stores that were already struggling — such as Neiman Marcus, J.C. Penney, Lord & Taylor and Stage Stores — into bankruptcy. Others such as Kohl’s, Macy’s and Nordstrom, also took a hit to sales and profits.
Despite the recent rebound in April, some retail analysts downplayed the figures because stores were shut down last April.
Barbara Kahn, professor of marketing at the Wharton School of Business, said last month’s spike “doesn’t really mean much.”
The future of department stores is up in the air, she said. She expects department stores that anchor lower-tier malls to close in the coming years, but said there is hope for those located in higher-end malls with strong co-tenants.
“It’s going to be incumbent on them to recognize the new realities of shopping and to fundamentally pivot,” she said. “They’re going to have to give you a reason to go into the department stores.
“Amazon, Walmart and Target are not standing still,” she added. “They are becoming in essence the new department stores of 2021.”
Department stores are trying new tactics to survive. Macy’s is expanding its discount arm, Macy’s Backstage, and opening small stores away from malls; Nordstrom is also adding discount stores, Nordstrom Rack, and pickup-only locations; and Kohl’s is growing its athletic clothing selection and struck a partnership with Sephora to create small beauty shops inside Kohl’s stores.
But Neil Saunders, analyst at GlobalData Retail, said that although department stores are making changes, they have “big structural issues” and are “not as relevant as they once were with shoppers.”
“One month of good growth doesn’t change the overall trajectory,” Saunders said. “They are still in trouble.”

I feel blessed to have been able to visit my brothers and parents during my last vacation. I had not seen them in person in nine months due to my busy work schedule and the ongoing pandemic. Something unexpected I found, however, was a copy of my birth certificate. I have seen my birth certificate in the past, but now that I am a family medicine resident, I was curious to check the name of the doctor who delivered me twenty-nine years ago. Her name was “Dr. J” and when I looked her up online, I discovered that she was still practicing in Wisconsin! As I looked at her web page, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Dr. J was also a family medicine resident when she delivered me at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, NY.
Receiving gratitude from patients is one of the best parts of a doctor’s day. So I decided to write a thank-you card to Dr. J for helping my mother Ying deliver me so many years ago. I shared that as a second year family medicine resident, I have now had the chance to help with numerous deliveries. I can attest to the fact that it is an incredible experience to be the first person to hold a newborn baby! I wrote my email address in the closing and sent it off to Wisconsin, wondering if I would receive a response.
This past Tuesday morning, while I was waiting in resident clinic for my first patient to be roomed, I got an email with the simple subject “Delivery.” It was from Dr. J! She shared with me that my personal card made her day. I was impressed that Dr. J not only remembered delivering me back in 1991, but also my birth weight and my father Anthony’s name! She was glad to hear that I was also now a family medicine resident and invited me to check out her clinic in Wisconsin if I was ever interested in practicing in the Midwest. Dr. J closed her email by writing, “I will wear a warm smile under my mask all day with the memories your card has stirred.”
We all have the ability to generate positivity in the world despite everything bad that is happening. Mail a card, call a friend. Visit a family member you have not seen in a while if it is safe to do so. You never know how many lives you will touch with a single positive act.

How Do You Become a Web Designer? Do You Have What It Takes?
Web design can be an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. It's a trade that combines technical skills with creative ability. If you feel comfortable with computer technology and you enjoy creating documents, web design can be a great way to combine the two interests.
That being said, it's always overwhelming to consider learning a new skill. Before learning how to become a web designer, you should ask yourself, "Should I become a web designer?"
I've been learning web design since I was ten years old, in 1994. I now do a lot of web design for myself and for some small business clients. There have been plenty of pleasures, but also plenty of frustrations. If you're considering becoming a web designer, there are some things you should keep in mind.
If you have a lot of time to devote to learning HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Photoshop, it's possible to learn the basics in a couple of months. Be ready to spend some money on manuals, books, and applications.
No matter how you decide to learn web design and how you decide to enter the field, some people have better potential to become web designers than others.
When you're programming, even if you're using a simple language like HTML and using a helpful application like Dreamweaver, you're going to encounter some frustrations. Sometimes, when I create an HTML document, I spend a lot more time making corrections and problem solving than doing fun stuff. Are you prepared to spend a lot of time testing and making little changes? No matter how you approach web design, tedium can't be completely avoided. If you're easily frustrated and discouraged, web design might not be for you.
Unless web design is going to be just a hobby for you, you will have clients you have to work with. Sometimes clients have a lot of specific expectations. Some clients have experience with web design themselves, but others may demand things without knowing the technical limitations involved. Before you start any project for clients, it's best to have a thorough conversation with them about what they want and what they need. That can save you a lot of time. How would you like to spend weeks developing a website, only to discover that your client wants completely different fonts, colors, graphics, site organization and content? If you're going to get into designing web pages for other people, you're going to have to be ready to make a lot of compromises and take a lot of criticism. Are you ready for that?
Finally, ask yourself if you have the time and energy to promote yourself. If you want to be hired by a web design firm, in addition to learning skills and possibly obtaining certifications, you've also got to be ready to pound the pavement with your resume and portfolio. It might take you over a year to find a job. Be ready to attend a lot of job interviews, and possibly get a lot of rejections.
If you're going to become a freelancer, like I am, you've really got to devote a lot of energy to self-promotion. Set up a website, preferably with your own domain. Be ready to spend some money on advertising. Spend a lot of time promoting your services with social media - Twitter, Facebook, Linked-In, and so on. Scan classified ads, particularly online classifieds. Print business cards and distribute them wherever you can. Use your connections and word-of-mouth to your advantage. Tell everyone you know that you're a web designer, and maybe someone knows someone who could be your first client. Sometimes I spend more time promoting myself than I do actually doing the work itself.
If you're ready to spend a little bit of money, do a lot of tedious work, take some criticism, and do a lot of self-promotion, then web design may be the field for you.
First, you've got to start the learning process. If you enjoy classroom instruction and having teachers, sign up for some web design and graphic design courses through your local community college. If you'd rather start learning on your own, buy some good books, look at the source codes of the web pages you visit, and go through some online tutorials. Even if you're going to start learning web design in a school setting, be prepared to do a lot of learning in your free time, as well.
It's important to learn HTML, especially HTML5. Learn Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), up to CSS3. JavaScript, possibly some server side scripting languages, and Flash are very useful, too. Don't forget to learn how to use Photoshop. If you don't have the money to buy Photoshop right away, start by downloading some free graphic design programs like Paint.Net and GIMP. You can learn some of the basics of graphic design that way, and possibly be better prepared when you finally buy the most recent version of Photoshop.
These days, people access the web in more ways than were ever possible before. When you're web designing, you not only want to make your web pages work in multiple browsers, but also on multiple devices. Even basic cell phones can access the web today, not just smart phones such as BlackBerrys and iPhones. Even some video game playing devices like the Sony PSP and Nintendo DSi have web browsers. Web surfers could be using tiny screens or enormous screens. They could be using a variety of different browsers and versions of browsers. Users may have completely different plug-ins and fonts; Adobe Flash is a browser plug-in, for instance. When you're learning web design, try surfing the web in as many ways as you can.
There are many helpful resources for learning web design online, and there are many helpful online tools for web designers, many of which I use.
The W3C is an excellent place to start. They're the non-profit organization founded by Tim Berners-Lee, the man who started the World Wide Web. The W3C sets standards for HTML, XML and CSS. In addition to information about coding languages and standards, they have handy tools to validate your code.
HTML Goodies has a lot of excellent tutorials and articles.
I've learned a lot so far, but I'm always learning more, and I'll always be a student of web design and media technology. As technology advances, things change. There'll always be new programming languages and applications. Learning is a constant process.

There is a big slice of Turkish rahat lokum delight and sherbet in a silver carafe. After the wedding dinner, they become husband and wife.
