...Moose Skin Boat. "Made from two raw moose hides with the flesh and hair removed, this traditional boat was used for travel and the transport of large game. Sometimes the boats were taken apart, after they had been used for awhile, and the hides tanned. The battering the hides took while part of the boat softened them and made them most desirable for clothing. The frame is constructed from willow branches. The skins were sewn together with sinew and the seams sealed with spruce pitch and moose or bear grease. After a few hours of travel, the boat became waterlogged and had to be dried out.
