October 30, 2022 - Green-crowned Warbler (Phylloscopus burkii) Breeding in the Himalayas from northern India to southern China, these warblers winter in eastern India and southwestern Bangladesh. They feed on insects, foraging mostly in the understory and often capturing prey in short flights. Little is known about their nesting behavior due to earlier confusion with a closely related species, but their breeding season may start in April.

Sarracenia rosea (syn. Sarracenia purpurea venosa var burkii) showing the distinctive pink flower and last season's slightly ragged pitchers . Flowers are generally produced in the spring before new foliage. Sarracenia rosea is native to Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. The differences between Sarracenia rosea and Sarracenia purpurea venosa are subtle and it's status as a separate species is controversial.

I’m a little worried I may have a bit too many plants...especially the Venus fly traps .___.;;

My first psittacina seems to grow wildly. It’s pretty big now. I can’t wait for it to multiply. The sarracenias seem to be thriving as well so I’m a pretty happy plant daddy.

I’ve resorted to using a line to water my nepenthes. It’s been months and they seem to enjoy it. Meanwhile the sundews know no bounds and threaten to take over most of the plant room D;

Also an appearance from the husband’s poinsettia!

Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana)

Mature Size - (30-65′ x 8-25′)

Shape and Form - A broadly conical, sometimes columnar, dense, evergreen conifer with horizontal branching. Trunks are often fluted at the base.

Growth Habit - Moderate growth rate.

Leaves - Dark blue green scale-like foliage. Evergreen. Foliage may turn brown-green in winter. Cultivars of this species often retain better foliage color in winter. 

Flowers - This is a dioecious species (separate male and female trees). Male flowers are yellow and female flowers are green. Blooms in late winter.

Fruit/Seeds -  Female trees produce round, gray to blackish-green berry-like cones (1/4” diameter) that ripen in fall the first year. Berry-like cones are attractive to many birds.

Bark - Gray to reddish-brown bark exfoliates in thin shreddy strips on mature trees.

Region - USA native. Native to eastern North America.

Hardiness Zones - (2-9)

Habitat/Growing Conditions - Typically occurs on limestone bluffs and glades, wood margins, fields, pastures and fence rows. Easily grown in average, dry to moist, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates a wide range of soils and growing conditions, from swamps to dry rocky glades. Prefers moist soils but is intolerant of constantly wet soils. It has the best drought resistance of any conifer native to the eastern U.S.

Heartwood is light brown and aromatic, and is commonly used for cedar and other products.

Many birds and small mammals eat the berrylike cones of Eastern Red Cedar, especially in winter. Wildlife species that the fruits include waxwings, bobwhite quail, ruffed grouse, sharp-tailed grouse, ring-necked pheasant, wild turkeys, rabbits, foxes, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and coyotes. Deer may browse the abundant foliage when no other food is available.

Current Nursery Status and Availability - Easily available in nursery trade, as are many cultivars. Dirr lists several cultivars of this species in his 6th edition woody plants manual, some of which are listed below.

'Burkii' - This pyramidal 20' tall plant has blue-green needles with a purplish cast in winter. It is a non-fruiting male clone.

'Canaertii' - A common cultivar, this plant grows as a compact pyramid to perhaps 25' tall after many years. The deep green needles are borne on the tips of the branches and the profuse fruit are bloomy blue.

'Emerald Sentinel' - This is a new pyramidal, columnar for growing 20' tall and only 8' wide. The foliage is dark green and the color is held well in winter. It is a fruiting female variety.

'Glauca' - This name serves as an umbrella for many clones with bluish needles, often fading in summer. Most grow 15'-20' tall with a pyramidal form. 'Manhattan Blue' is similar, growing to 12' tall.

'Grey Owl' - A low spreading form to 18" tall with 3' to 6' spread, this plant bears fine, feathery foliage of a silver-blue color. It is a compact, spreading grower only growing 6' tall but much wider in time. It is an abundant fruiting clone.

'Hillspire' - This male clone assumes a symmetical pyramidal habit with healthy green foliage. The foliage color is maintained in winter.

'Pendula' (also listed as f. pendula) - Many clones carry this name, and most have spreading limbs with pendulous branchlets. They can grow to 40' tall and feature abundant blue fleshy cones.
