Chapter 3
“Laaaadies and gentlefolk, WELCOME to the Plaimik Pit, the biggest fighting ring in ALL the Borderlands!” A hundred voices cheered, as the announcer dipped into a low bow. “It is my great pleasure to open our first match of this evening, featuring a rivalry as old as Sarant itself! Hunter versus scavenger, claws against fangs, opponents who move faster than the average eye can follow: I give you, the Pale Huntress, against, the Ragebeast!”
Further shouts and cheers rang out, while down below, two of the several gates set into the fighting ring’s wall lifted upwards. From one, a small, wiry form immediately burst out, snapping and snarling and tearing up gashes in the sand. Across from him, a taller, more slender figure slowly stalked forward, hands and head perfectly still, though her silky tail swished from side to side.
“Aaand- BEGIN!”
The announcer’s final shout sent the felisapi girl sprinting forward, claws suddenly appearing from flexed fingers. Her ritikai opponent continued to snarl like a wild animal, crouched and waiting - only at the last moment, before she could pounce, did he suddenly spring aside, a thin sword flicking free of his woven belt. The felisapi spun mid leap to avoid taking a slash to her side, sneering when she landed.
What followed could only be described as a dance: a deadly, fast-paced series of steps and twists, as both combatants flowed through strike after dodge after leap. Spectators cheered each moment it seemed one would land a blow, only to boo as the other spun away. Those with wagers riding on the match shouted for their favored opponent to watch out or hurry up. Finally, when her rear paw slid a little too far on the sand, the felisapi didn’t lean quite far enough out of the path of her opponent’s blade.
“First blood to the Ragebeast!” The announcer bellowed, as a few smears of crimson decorated the arena floor. Frenzied by the successful hit, the ritikai launched into a rapid fire flurry of blows, bewildering to the eye. His enemy retreated, unwilling to risk further strikes to her arms by retaliating. Just when it seemed that the ritikai would back her into the wall, however, the felisapi dropped and spun, leg swiping up a haze of sand.
The ritikai coughed, blinked - and missed the kick that knocked both paws out from under him. In a split second, the felisapi jumped upright once more, seized her opponent’s hairless tail, and swung. Unsurprisingly, the headfirst collision with the wall knocked him out cold. Their audience erupted into gleeful shouts as his body fell limply to the ground, underscored by those who’d lost their wagers bemoaning the sudden turn of events. Calling out the final results, the announcer waved dismissively to the felisapi. She grabbed the ritikai’s tail once more, and dragged him through the victor’s gate.
Once they reached a point out of sight of the audience, the supposedly unconscious Amkyn opened his eyes and kicked half-heartedly at his captor. “That was cheating.”
“Was not,” she called back.
“We both agreed on not using our tails against one another!”
“Ah-ah, we both agreed no biting or pulling on each other’s tails,” the girl corrected, finally stopping to let him go. “You never said anything about swinging.”
Rolling onto his front with a groan, the ritikai slowly pushed himself upright, and pointed a single claw-tipped finger up at her face. “I do not like it when you play with words - there was an intent in our agreement, which you definitely broke.” They kept up matching scowls for a few moments, before the felisapi broke first. The moment her whiskers twitched, both of them broke down into giggles.
Only when a door opened further down the hallway did their laughter trail off. One of the fighters for the next match strode past, a burly borfen with scars visible even through her thick hide. “Tero. Raj.”
“Good luck, Jakis!”
“Hrmph.” The borfen paused long enough to pat each of them on the head. “I don’t need luck. Fifer’s agreed to go down after ten minutes.”
“Oh. Well, have fun, then!” A deep chuckle echoed through the hall as the grizzled gladiator walked on, leaving the pair of kids behind. Tero nudged Raj’s shoulder, and he followed her through the door. In the waiting room beyond, a burar girl only a few years their senior poked through the chest of medical supplies, bandages and goldroot salve already sitting out.
“Don’t think we’ll need any more than that, Ama,” Tero said, sauntering over. “He only landed a scratch on me!”
The burar hummed at her words, but didn’t pull back from the chest until she’d found a particular half-empty bottle, which she held out to Raj.
“Oh, no thanks, Ama,” the ritikai tried to protest. “My skull’s too thick to need that, honest.” Wide black eyes stared into his own, however, until he relented and accepted the strong painkiller. Raj only took a quick swallow, but it made Ama smile, and he let out a small sigh of relief even as he handed the bottle back.
Tero chatted away as she sat on the nearest bench, arm held steady for the burar to smear on healing salve and carefully wrap a linen bandage around the limb. Thankfully, her earlier words proved true, and the scratch didn’t need any further attention. Both gladiators thanked their friend, before heading out the far door and down another hallway. When they emerged outside the arena, midday light had faded to afternoon. Tero stretched, letting out a massive yawn. “Early dinner? We’ve got to be up at dawn tomorrow.”
“Yeah, alright.” Raj led the way down the hill, taking a footpath that looped behind the shop stalls and stores reserved for Arriv customers. Closer to Plaimik’s main gate, the path split, and he and Tero took the left-side route to the cooking pits.
A wizened quirren at the main serving table tsked when he saw Tero’s bandage, bushy tail flicking, but the old Amkyn didn’t say anything as he put together a bowl for each of them: two ladles of tuber stew, half a hunk of hare meat, and one bread roll hard enough to be a makeshift rock.
“Thanks, Iziin,” Tero called as she and her best friend stepped away. Another tsk followed, making her chuckle.
“Dinner of champions,” Raj huffed, dropped to sit on a cracked bench.
“We’re not old enough to be champions yet, we’re still opening acts.”
“Someday, Tero, someday,” the ritikai insisted, eyes growing distant. “And then we’ll be given our own hut instead of sleeping in general quarters, and we’ll get food from the Arriv kitchens-”
“And we’ll both have more scars than old Jakis,” Tero teased.
“Not with Ama around! Maybe by then she’ll be the top mender, too, so she won’t have to do regular chores on top of making medicine and fixing everyone up.”
“Mm, maybe. Now eat, idiot, I wanna go to bed soon.”
“Aw, did the big kitty-cat get tired running away from me- ouch!” Raj scowled when Tero yanked on his still-tender tail, and reached over to poke a claw into a gap between her wooden armor pieces. She jumped back with a yelp, almost spilling the stew from her bowl.
“Oi!” Iziin yelled at them from the serving table. “You kits knock it off! Don’t waste the dratted food!”
“Sorry!”
Trials of Youth Ch1
(...so. So far my attempts to get in a good headspace to finish this book's second draft have not gone well, which means it's time to take drastic action. Hence, sharing the first handful of chapters here, and seeing if my friends having someplace to screech and ask what's next will help)
Dawn bloomed.
In the southern plains, sitting near the very top of a cottonwood tree, a girl admired how light spread across the land, transforming everything by simple use of illumination. When enough time had passed that she could see her surroundings clearly, the fourteen year old turned and looked down.
“Fren! Time to get up, lazy-bones!” A muffled grunt was the only response. Rolling her eyes, the girl started to climb downward, swiftly passing her own hammock to crouch beside the one below. With a teasing grin, she started to push at it, swinging the cloth and its inhabitant from side to side. “Frennnn.”
“Mm’up.” A hand and arm were stretched up out of the mess of blankets, before flopping back over.
“Freniden Brusan, if you don’t wake up in the next thirty seconds, I’m tipping this thing over and dumping you out of it.”
Bunched-up cloth and curly black hair were pushed aside so that her friend could direct his glare towards the girl. “You wouldn’t.”
“I most certainly would.”
“We’re twenty feet in the air, Tali!”
“Then you’ll just have to use your all-powerful wizardly talents to keep from getting injured.” She released her hold on the hammock and stood. “Now come on!”
“Alright, alright, I’m getting up,” the younger boy grumbled, kicking his blankets off and reaching for his bag, hanging from a nearby branch. “I swear, everyone in your family is a lunatic, rising at dawn and ordering other people to do the same...”
“I’m sorry, does this come as a surprise to you?” Laughing, Tali climbed back up to avoid the smelly sock Fren threw in her direction. Within a few minutes, both children had donned their outer traveling clothes and rolled up their hammocks, stuffing the bulky bundles into Fren’s enchanted satchel. Once they’d clambered back down to the ground, the wizardling pulled out some hard biscuits and dried meat for their breakfast.
“So,” he asked around a mouthful of food. “Now that we’ve successfully gotten too far from the city for your father’s search parties to find, do we have a destination in mind to start looking for this missing sister of yours?”
Tali frowned thoughtfully. “Well, much as I want to find Lillia, we could stop by your old home first, visit your family-” She stopped when Fren snorted.
“Bad idea. My relatives wouldn’t let us leave for at least the better part of a month, which I know would drive you insane.”
“It would?”
“Oh, yes. Nothing interesting ever happens in Fammon.”
“Well, fine then, if you don’t want to see your uncle and aunt and cousins, we’ll just go straight north.”
Fren raised an eyebrow. “That’s it? That’s all the great Petalia Crant can come up with?”
“That’s all we need,” Tali argued, looking ahead with a fierce expression. “We go north.”
“I’m starting to have second thoughts about running off with you...”
“Too late to change your mind now!” Tali playfully punched her friend’s shoulder, and giggled when the chubby boy pretended to stagger.
“Hey! Easy with those muscles of yours! I may have extra padding, but that doesn’t mean it won’t get bruised!”
“Oh, quit being such a whiner.”
“Bully.”
“Wimp!”
“Aquimbe!” Before Tali could blink, a spray of water caught her in the face. She spluttered, ducking away as Fren cackled. The spell ended after a moment, water spout fading back into nothing, though the girl remained very much wet.
“That,” she declared, wiping at her face with the edge of her cape, “Was so not fair.”
“Forgive me for wanting to get the upper hand just once,” Fren grinned.
The pair continued to banter as they walked on, eventually finding a road heading in the right direction. Tali checked it over for recent tracks while Fren whispered a quick scanning spell for nearby people. Neither of them found any signs of fellow travelers.
“Should we risk it?” The wizardling asked. His friend shrugged.
“May as well.”
Winding as it may have been, the road nonetheless took them north, and the pair made good time. By mid-morning, they’d covered several miles, and stopped for a water break on top of a shallow hill. When she handed back the water skin, Tali decided to climb another tree, to get a look at their new surroundings.
The girl had only gotten part way up the trunk, though, when something not too far away caught her eye.
Fren flinched as she suddenly landed beside him, fumbling the water skin and nearly dropping it. He didn’t have any time to ask what she’d seen before Tali was dashing off down the hill. Scrambling, Fren hurried after. A few minutes later, they rounded a bend in the road, and he too saw what had grabbed his friend’s attention.
A small, weather-beaten wagon was stuck, one of its front wheels trapped by a deep crack in the earth. The driver, a wrinkled old goblin, strained as she tried to pull it free without much success. Harnessed to the front of the wagon, her horse saw the two human youths first, and whinnied.
“Hello there!” Tali called, slowing her steps as she approached. “Could we offer you a hand?”
The goblin, who’d paused at her horse’s sudden warning, looked over in surprise. “I wouldn’t mind a bit if you did! I just need a tad more oomph to lift it free, I think.”
Tali immediately stepped to her side, crouching in order to get a good grip on the frame of the wagon before glancing over her shoulder. “C’mon, Fren, hurry up.”
He rolled his eyes. “Wizard student, remember? Elvitaere.” A soft yellow light sprang from the pendant tied around his left wrist, enveloping the wagon and causing it to slowly float into the air.
“Oh my,” the goblin gaped.
Huffing at her friend’s dramatics, Tali nonetheless pushed the wagon’s side, nudging it away from the hole. As soon as all four wheels were over even ground again, Fren ended the spell, letting the wagon gently set back down. The old goblin clapped her hands in delight.
“That was wonderful!” She gushed. “Saved my poor back and everything! Thank you so much, dearies.”
“You’re very welcome,” Tali said. “Is there anything else we could help you with?”
“Well, now I feel silly, but I’d emptied out everything I could to make this old hunk lighter - I don’t suppose the two of you would mind giving me a hand putting it all back, would you?”
Blinking, Fren leaned over to look at the other side of the road. Sure enough, several blankets were spread across the ground, dozens upon dozens of books and knick-knacks and other peddler’s goods piled atop them. He gave Tali a side-eyed glance, and sighed when she glared back.
“Happy to be of assistance, ma’am.”

Wolfen & Warlocks
A few days ago I rolled up some versions of Cliff and Sierra for a tabletop roleplaying game of my own creation, and it was very fun! Definitely going to play around with that some more in future.
For now, though, I thought I'd lay out a little more about the Sarantian Races, and reiterate my offer to put together/draw other muses in this little fantasy world - more under the cut:
What is Sarant? A high fantasy world I've been devising for nearly fifteen years now, with one self-published book on the market and several more in the works. It is a place inhabited by the various Amkyn races, whose primitive ancestors emerged from the earliest fonts of primal magic, and also the Arriv, an allied collection of peoples descended from refugees that arrived from other worlds entirely.
The Arriv Elf, dwarf, human, orc, and goblin are outliers in this wild land, using their 'celestial' magics to skirt the natural order of things and praying to a pantheon of gods called the Immosi.
Elves have long since made themselves at home in the Grand Forest and along the shores of its Long Lake. They are classified as Middling-Tall, receive a +2 Attunement bonus, and originally created the trasformative magic called Alchemy
Dwarves dwell in the extensive cavern system beneath the towering Wide Mounts and their many foothills. They are classified as Middling-Short, receive a +2 Strength bonus, and originally created the crafting magic called Sorcery
Humans spread throughout much of the Southern Fields and can be found in communities of all sizes along the river lines. They are classified as Middling, receive a +2 Intuition bonus, and originally created the manipulation magic called Wizardry
Orcs live in either the Eastern Woodlands or Grey Crags depending on their philosophical ideologies, the meckle and the kunal. They are classified as Large, receive a +2 Fortitude bonus, and originally created the health-based Sacrificial magic.
Goblins founded a new home in the extensive and bountiful Marhok Marshlands of the southwest. They are classified as Small, receive a +2 Agility bonus, and originally created the space-folding Astral magic.
The Amkyn Of all the many non-sapient animal species to cover the vast array of environments in the world, only twenty have given rise to more advanced Amkyn peoples, capable of craftship, culture, and civilization. Some of these races are older and more powerful than others, but each answer to their representative god upon the Primari Council.
Wolfen (wolves) Large, Natural Ability: Guardian Boon
Felisapi (cats) Middling-Tall, NA: Claw Slash
Kitsune (foxes) Middling-Short, NA: Deep Bite
Ritikai (rats) Small, NA: Tail Smack
Minotaurs (cattle) Large, NA: Hoof Stomp
Centaurs (horses) Large-Long, NA: Rearing Kick
Burar (badgers) Middling, NA: Explosive Growl
Fauns (sheep) Small, NA: Headbutt
Satyrs (goats) Middling-Short, NA: Horn Slam
Dryads (deer) Middling-Long, NA: Bounding Leap
Harpies (birds of prey) Middling-Tall, NA: Sudden Shriek
Fairies (winged insects) Tiny, NA: Airborne
Quirren (squirrels) Middling, NA: Inherent Spite
Dispai (spiders) Tiny-Long, NA: Sticky Feet
Torardim (turtles) Middling, NA: Extra Armor
Borfen (bears) Large, NA: Paw Swipe
Naga (snakes) Tiny, NA: Tripping Hazard
Obongi (frogs) Small, NA: Spring Step
Susataurs (pigs) Large, NA: Bonecrunch
Anonians (dragonkin) Variety of Sizes and Natural Abilities, depending on the particular court: the Tiny bright green Forests with a Paralytic Touch, the Small golden Fields with Wing Strike, the Middling-Short russet Crags who Hypnotize, the Middling azure Crystals with Poison Spines, the Middling-Tall crimson Smokes who breathe Dense Smog, and Large violet Storms who Summon Lightning
Natural Abilities and Bonuses come inherent to each race; Wolfen cannot learn Elemental Magics, Amkyn as a whole are unable to use Celestial Magics, and Arriv remain barred from the Primal category of Natural Magics. Other than those restrictions, any personage is free to pick and choose whatever skills they prefer from these areas of study:
MELEE Hand to Hand - Close Combat - Long Range
FOCUS Conviction - Centering - Awareness
SUBTLETY Tricks - Borrows - Whispers
NATURAL MAGIC Primal - Musical - Soul - Growth - Decay
CELESTIAL MAGIC Arcane - Astral - Alchemy - Sorcery - Sacrificial
ELEMENTAL MAGIC Fire - Water - Earth - Air - Magma - Ice - Light - Dark
There are four basic abilities within each category; specializing can earn the favor of that field's divine patron(s), whereas diversifying can open pathways to particular allies and organizations. New characters begin with four choices; leveling up allows the option of adding a new ability to one's skillset, or upgrading one already known to improve its output.

Hey, my friend is buying an oak barrel to make mead in and is looking for something to engrave onto it. I figured you were the best person to ask: is there some nifty Old Norse or ON-adjacent quote about mead you can think of? I figured there must be something in the Eddas or some runic inscription somewhere, or maybe in Old High German or something.
Sure, Norse people talked about mead so much that this is like asking whether Norse literature has any quotes about vikings. I don't know how long a quote they want, but here's a small assortment.
This one is actually my favorite but I found it late in looking for stuff. Norwegian runic inscription B308 [link to entry on Runor] reads:
(m)ynta : (e)k : myklu o^pda^r miö^þ:ra^nci koma na^la Mynda ek miklu optar mjǫð-ranni koma náliga. 'If only I were to come near the mead-house much more often.'
Unfortunately the object itself is sort of difficult to read:
Drekkr mjöð Mímir morgun hverjan af veði Valföðrs. 'Mímir drinks mead every morning from Valföðr's wager.' -- Völuspá (stanza 28 by the normal composite edition)
drekki þó at hófi mjöð 'but drink mead in moderation' -- Hávamál 19 (maybe not the most exciting but a good reminder)
ok ek drykk of gat ins dýra mjaðar, (ausinn Óðreri) 'and I got myself a drink of that precious mead, (increased by/with Óðrerir)' -- Hávamál 140 (Óðinn talking about the mead of poetry; you could chop the ausinn Óðreri part off and still have a complete thought).
skapker fylla hon skal ins skíra mjaðar 'she shall fill a large vessel with the clear/bright mead' -- Grímnismál, talking about Heiðrún the goat, who produces mead instead of milk
The line: tak við hrímkálki / fullum forns mjaðar 'accept a crystal chalice full of ancient mead' recurs word-for-word twice in Norse mythological poems (Skírnismál and Lokasenna); in both cases the context is hostility although the line itself is aimed at assuaging that hostility
mjǫðr hegnir bǫl bragna 'mead keeps away men's misfortune' -- a line from the following, which, if your friend is very ambitious, could also be a suggestion:
Hreintjǫrnum gleðr horna — horn náir lítt at þorna — — mjǫðr hegnir bǫl bragna — bragningr skipasagnir. Fólkhǫmlu gefr framla framlyndr viðum gamlar — hinns heldr fyr skot skjǫldum — skjǫldungr hunangsǫldur.
'The prince gladdens the ships’ crews with pure lakes of horns [MEAD]; the horn is hardly able to dry out; mead keeps away men’s misfortune. The bold-minded lord, the one who holds shields before the shots, gives old honey-waves [MEAD] liberally to woods of war-rods [SWORDS > WARRIOR].'
-- Snorri Sturlusson, demonstrating the dunhent metre.
Here's another stanza of poetry, much shorter:
Nú hefk mart í miði greipat burar Bors Búra arfa.
'Now I have included many things in the mead of the son of Borr, the heir of Búri.'
-- Þorvaldr blǫnduskáld; by 'mead' here he means poetry.
Here are some kennings, either for mead specifically or for an alcoholic drink generally:
hunangsbára 'honey-wave'
hlenni ennigeira uxa 'resounding sea of the forehead-spears of oxen'
hreintjǫrn horna 'pure lake of horns'
gamlar hunangsalda 'old honey-waves'
heilsa máls 'cure of speech'
hornstraumr 'horn-stream'
vindlauss vágr geira svigðis 'windless wave of spears of the bull'
fors horna 'waterfall of horns'
ýring atgeira úra 'moisture of the halberd of aurochs'
There's loads more. If you have anything more specific you're looking for I might be able to find something with the focus narrowed.
I don't really know anything about Old High German.

"They're called burars," Sierra says, intently scribbling in a new notebook, "The badger-people in that Wolfen and Warlocks game I was telling Cliff about. They aren't all that tall, but they're strong, and I'm giving mine a bunch of melee abilities so if anyone tries to mess with her, she can shut them down hard."

Disappointed
Just... not a good day for us. We haven’t lost against Burnley in 10 matches and today it felt lucky we got a point
We played well for 15ish mins and had some good chances but can’t finish them. Don’t blame Auba for them but I blame us for dropping off like we’ve been doing every match and not creating more chances.
Mustafi was solid today, I’ll never stop thinking he’s going to make a boneheaded decision but the “when it doubt kick it out” method of safe defending worked well. Also how is it possible that he went off on a stretcher last match and started this match?
Xhaka was good and we really missed him in midfield after he had to fill in at LB
Speaking of which I guess we’re not allowed to have any healthy LBs fml. I hope nothing too serious with Saka
We desperately need a b2b midfielder
Onto the bad. LACA. I’ve been trying to be patient with him especially since Mikel seems to rate him a lot but I don’t know what to do with a CF who hasn’t scored an away goal in a year. I have a feeling Laca does well in training but can’t handle it when he’s under pressure. I’m reminded of Mourinho’s quote about him not being a “big game player”. Today I don’t see his work rate or hold up play either
Normally love Matteo’s energy but he killed so many counters
Don’t understand Mikel’s decisions with the lineup. Gabi on the opposite side of Saka even though their combination play was a revelation. No backup FB on the bench. Pepe on the bench but never used even though we’re desperate for a winger. There’s been enough matches to see that Laca-Mesut doesn’t really work
I don’t know about his subs either. Why wait until the 89th minute to make a like-for-like substitution at CF when the problem is we can’t create? I’m nervous that Mikel’s inexperience is showing in his game management
The worst for me is seeing us play with so little energy and urgency after the first 15 mins. We did that too in the Chelsea match until we went down to 10. I really just want to see improvements every match and today just felt like we went sideways/backwards (just like our passing today lmao)
Anyways. This is so disappointing. I hope the 2 weeks break will change some things.
