Chapter 10-8 The Sound of Lu Ming (呦呦陸鳴)
Chapter 10-7
.
.
.
When I woke up again, there was a slight warmth on my wrist. I squinted for a while and finally saw the person sitting by the bed.
Princess: ...Lu Ming? It seems I'm still dreaming...
Lu Ming: What dream?! I'm alive!
I stared at him in disbelief for a long time, until Lu Ming brought his face close to mine.
Lu Ming: Don't believe me? Pinch me?... Ouch!
Princess: How long have I been asleep?
Lu Ming: Hmph... you were unconscious. If a person doesn't sleep for a long time, their body will forcibly enter sleep, and some people will never wake up again!
Princess: It seems my constitution is pretty good.
Lu Ming: It's my medical skills that are good!
My first meeting with Lu Ming was in Shengning. It has only been a few months, but things have changed dramatically.
But seeing him appear in front of me again, I felt an unprecedented sense of stability.
Princess: How did you get here?
Seeing me propping myself up on my arms and trying to get up, Lu Ming subconsciously came to help me, and I saw his hands covered in chilblains and the stains on his clothes.
This was very unlike him. Lu Ming always paid great attention to his appearance and would never let himself appear in front of me in such a disheveled state.
Princess: You...
Zhan Yun: Doctor Lu brought a lot of medicinal herbs, which solved our urgent needs.
Zhan Yun walked in from outside, carrying a bowl of medicine.
Zhan Yun: There are a few key medicinal ingredients that Doctor Lu said he collected from Mount Zuoyin.
The mountain is covered with heavy snow, and he had to bypass the Red Robe Army. How did Lu Ming manage to do it alone?
Lu Ming: Why are you looking at me like that? Hey, don't cry, I don't know how to comfort girls!
Princess: ...
Princess: Did you come from Nancang?
Lu Ming: Yes, I rushed all the way here after hearing the news of the epidemic outbreak in Lingzhou, without even closing my eyes.
Lu Ming: But... I didn't expect to actually see you here.
Princess: All the necessary medicines have been used, the dead rats have all been burned and buried, and the water source is clean, but the infection just can't be stopped.
Princess: Lingzhou can't lose any more people, Lu Ming. Do you have a way to cure them?
The white-haired young man looked at me with those clear eyes.
Lu Ming: Of course, with me, Lu Ming, here, I can snatch people from the hands of the King of Hell!
At that moment, I finally felt relieved. The people were saved, Fengyuan was saved.
Lu Ming: "The dead are not separated by households, and for three months no one travels the roads." Every time a plague breaks out in history, the consequences are extremely tragic.
Lu Ming: This disease is caused by heat toxin accumulating and causing stagnation, so the treatment should focus on the blood. But because of this, people think that the plague can only be transmitted through blood and wounds.
When he spoke about his profession, Lu Ming seemed like a different person, his expression becoming serious.
Lu Ming: Actually, this disease can also enter the lungs through breathing. The Princess must have noticed this, so she ordered the whole city to cover their mouths and noses with cotton cloth and disinfect with strong medicine.
Princess: I was only guessing at that time, because I had seen similar symptoms in medical books before. Just in case...
Lu Ming: Because of the Princess's decision, the speed of the epidemic's spread has been slowed down. You have saved many lives.
He took out a silk cloth and spread it out in front of me. It was covered with a densely written prescription—
Lu Ming: Three qian of forsythia, two qian of bupleurum, two qian of kudzu root, five qian of rehmannia, one and a half qian of angelica, three qian of red peony root, eight qian of peach kernel with the skin and tip removed and crushed.
Lu Ming: Five qian of safflower, one qian of chuanxiong, two qian of licorice—it would be even better if the medicinal ingredients included rhinoceros horn and saffron.
Lu Ming: But those two medicinal herbs are very expensive and difficult to obtain in times of crisis, so I brought ophiopogon root, bamboo leaf core, isatis root, and cogongrass rhizome as substitutes.
Lu Ming: Using this dose to invigorate blood and remove toxins, supplemented with medicine to clear the lungs, can ensure recovery.
Zhan Yun: According to Doctor Lu's instructions, these medicines have been decocted and I have sent people to distribute them to the people.
Princess: That's great!
Lu Ming: However... although symptomatic treatment is important, to completely solve the plague, prevention is fundamental. We still need to let uninfected people obtain "zhengqi."
Princess: Zhengqi?
Lu Ming: The plague everyone is infected with now is highly toxic. If they are infected with a mild toxin first, they will not die and will be able to obtain "zhengqi." With zhengqi within, evil cannot invade, thus avoiding infection with the severe toxin.
Lu Ming: But... the method of infecting with the mild toxin is a bit scary.
Princess: How scary is it?
Lu Ming turned around and pulled out a shiny knife from his medicine box.
Lu Ming: We must first collect the fluid from the sores of those infected with the mild toxin, then dilute it and prepare a mildly toxic plague solution. Then, use the tip of the knife to make a small cut on the person's skin.
Princess: ...Will this method work?
Lu Ming: Of course it will work. I have experimented with the toxins of other plagues before!
Seeing my shocked expression, Lu Ming curled his lip.
Lu Ming: I had no other choice. At that time, no one believed me, so I could only test it on myself to prove I was right.
Princess: ...You continue, what happens after making the cut?
Lu Ming: Apply the diluted plague toxin to a gauze and stick it to the cut on the skin, allowing the toxin to penetrate. This completes the inoculation.
Lu Ming: But the control of the dosage is crucial, especially for this highly lethal toxin. A little more or a little less could lead to failure.
I pondered for a moment.
Princess: Lu Ming, are you sure this method can protect uninfected people from the virus?
Lu Ming: Although it's not 100%, once zhengqi is formed in the body, even if infected, it will not develop into a severe case, and it can greatly reduce the mortality rate.
Lu Ming: But... no one will be willing to try this method. They will only think I'm crazy.
Princess: You're right, they won't be willing.
I stretched out my arm.
Princess: So I will be the first.
Lu Ming: Princess...?!
Princess: Not only will I try it, but I will also do it publicly in front of all the people in the city. Only then can we gain everyone's trust.
Lu Ming's eyes widened.
Lu Ming: Aren't you afraid...
Princess: I believe in you, Doctor Lu. If you say it will work, then it will definitely work.
-
I sat on the veranda, watching Zhan Yun walk towards me.
After Feng Yuan collapsed, most of the county magistrate's duties fell on his and Ge Qing's shoulders. Coupled with the need to provide relief to the sick, they were busy every day.
I saw a rare joy on his face.
Zhan Yun: Princess, the condition of most of the patients in the city has stabilized. Physician Lu said that as long as they continue to take their medicine, they will be fine soon.
Princess: Good.
Zhan Yun: Lord Feng Yuan is also much better. He asked me to tell you not to worry about him.
Princess: ...Good.
I didn't say anything more, and Zhan Yun quietly accompanied me.
Zhan Yun: The day the Princess returned, I knew that Lingzhou would get better.
I looked up and met his gaze.
Zhan Yun: I haven't had a chance to say it--Princess, welcome back.
The wind blew past, and I heard the busy footsteps of the people outside the wall, and the familiar hustle and bustle of the market further away.
My Lingzhou is gradually returning to its former vibrancy.
Princess: Zhan Yun.
Zhan Yun: Princess?
Princess: The New Year is coming soon.
Zhan Yun was slightly taken aback, then his expression relaxed.
Zhan Yun: Yes, the New Year is coming soon.

Herbal medicine for diabetes
In recent years, great progress has been made in the treatment of diabetes with traditional Chinese medicine. The results show that many herbal medicine for diabetes contain a variety of hypoglycemic components, such as polysaccharides, flavonoids, terpenoids, steroidal saponins, alkaloids, etc.
Polysaccharides Polysaccharides can promote insulin release, increase hepatic glycogen synthesis, and tissue utilization of sugar. In general, the roots of Chinese herbs are rich in starch polysaccharides, and flowers and grasses contain more fiber polysaccharides. Traditional Chinese medicine containing polysaccharides commonly used in the treatment of diabetes include ginseng, gastrodia, jade bamboo, Cordyceps sinensis, Eumoides, anemarrhena, Poria, Zihecha (placenta), mulberry leaves, mulberry tao, mulberry white peel, Zhuling, platycodon, Gegen, astragalus, nebia root, Coicis seed, Trichosanthes, etc.
Flavonoids Flavonoids can increase vascular elasticity, reduce blood viscosity and increase blood flow, so as to prevent and treat diabetic vascular neurological complications. Flavonoids are ubiquitous in plants, and there are many varieties of traditional Chinese medicine rich in flavonoids, such as hawthorn, yam, plantaginis, raw land, Pinellia, soybean, tea, bitter buckwheat, propolis, silkworm cocoon, etc.
Terpenoids Terpenoids mainly affect substance metabolism in the human body and increase the utilization of sugar by tissues and cells. Chinese herbs containing terpenoids include ginseng, guaomegranate peel, pomegranate bark or root peel, Digupi, Rehmannia, Angelica sinensis, Difuzi, Rhizoma radix, Salvia miltiorrhiza, Ganoderma lucidum, Paeoniflora, bitter gourd, Chen, spinach root, grandiflorum, etc.
Steroid saponins The hypoglycemic mechanism of steroid saponins is similar to that of western drugs sulfonylureas, which can increase insulin secretion, increase the number and sensitivity of insulin receptors. Rich in steroid saponins compounds of traditional Chinese medicine are Wannian Qing, Schisandrae chinensis, Bupleurum, anemarrhena asphodeloides, yam, bitter gourd, gynostemma, Panax quinquefolium and so on.
Aloe Vera is known to have several health benefits for diabetic patients. Regular consumption of this herb by diabetics can help decrease the total lipid count, smoothening of the digestive system, while also reducing other diabetes related complications.
In order to ensure the smooth flow of insulin, doctors advise taking the juice of the plant twice a day. Taking Aloe Vera juice regularly in this manner will not only stabilize the blood glucose levels but all the blood vessels which get damaged due to the onset of diabetes and other reasons shall be restored as well.
The juice when consumed regularly, also helps in the blood getting more and more of oxygen. This goes a long way in promoting the sound health of the diabetes patients.
Diabetes is known to cause a number of heart-related problems in the patients as well. Taking about 30 milliliters of the juice twice a day promotes heart health of the patient. The glucomannan present in the herb helps to maintain the required level of triglycerides and thereby promoting heart health in the patient.
Aloe Vera has inflammatory properties and as such, the gel from the plant could be applied in diabetes related boils and scars. The cuts and other wounds which diabetes patients get can also be healed quickly by applying such gel.
This popular vegetable has long been known to be a very useful herb. The vegetable is known to contain various compounds that can help type 2 diabetes patients by lowering the blood glucose. Also, one of the compounds can have the same effect on the patient as the hormone insulin, thereby helping to fight complications.
Juice of the plant is used widely in order to get several health benefits. The juice from the herb is usually mixed with lemon and ginger before the same is drunk. The best time to drink the juice is early in the morning on an empty stomach.
Bitter Melon makes for a great vegetable choice. After having removed the seeds of the plant, the same can be boiled or roasted and had in the form of the vegetable. A few people avoid it due to the bitter taste of the plant. In such a scenario, blanch the vegetable in boiling water for a few minutes and then soak the same properly. The vegetable can now be cooked.
For diabetes treatment, around 3-4 cups of Bitter Melon tea have also been recommended.
The herb is also available in the form of a capsule and you can incorporate the same in your everyday diet for best results.
However, it is necessary to note here that the herb may not be healthy for pregnant women and as such if you have diabetes and are pregnant avoid taking Bitter Melon unless your doctor asks you to resume the same.
