Marcus - "...but to fashion a lullaby for you." (1998)

It is Tuesday night, there are thunderstorms outside, and I'm listening to Bunita Marcus. This name I vaguely recognized as being the title of a Morton Feldman piece, in his typical dry fashion "For Bunita Marcus" A student I guess? Recently am getting more interested in Feldman and listened to this great overview of his life and style by Classical Nerd on YouTube. The lower points of his biography happen when he was mentor and friend with Bunita Marcus, who shared similar compositional ideas, and as history does, the more famous artist is celebrated and played while younger woman was ignored in comparison. Classical Nerd urged his audience to seek out and enjoy Marcus' music. This long extended "lullaby" has thin textures throughout, almost as if listening to plucked strings, and gorgeous harmonies glistening through the shadows. It is beautiful, nostalgic, ethereal, but carried along with an anxious tone, and feels darker and bleak, as this cloudy rainy night. Listening to Marcus is like listening to Feldman, a sound-painting of a still life that unveils new details with every repetition. I can't find a good program in Google. I don't know the history of this piece, other than an inference toward childhood pain and abuse. It is a strange discomfort listening to the shadows that blanket you.
