ANGSTCEMBER MASTERLIST (feat. haikyuu!! and bungou stray dogs)
━━━━━━━━✿ ━━━━━━━━
it was difficult to be in the mafia without spilling blood. after all, it was what the job entailed. just like everyone who joined the port mafia, you had been accepted because of your skill in eliminating targets. you always did so quickly and oftentimes mercilessly. more than a few times, mori himself had gave you solo missions to specifically assassinate unneeded targets.
and yet, you hated having to kill. you hated that from a young age, it was the only way you ever knew when it came to surviving the world you lived in. after being orphaned, you were immediately taken in by a criminal syndicate and trained to be an assassin before eventually joining the port mafia. as much as you tried to outrun this, you gave in and grew apathetic to your job requirements. ‘just do it as quick as possible, forget, and then move on,’ you told yourself during every job.
that was until you had met chuuya nakahara.
well, it’s not like you had met him for the first time there at a local bar. everyone in the port mafia knew about the young, mafia executive with the powerful gravity manipulation ability. in fact, you had worked under him on a few assignments. despite the reputation about his temper, you found him to be quite level-headed when it came to leading your group and making difficult decisions on the spot. there was a side to chuuya that was a bit caring too and he always checked on everyone after a mission. sometimes, you’d even watch him remove his hat in respect when a fallen mafioso was reported.
“nakahara-san,” you were about to get up and bow when he waved a hand, signaling not to.
“you don’t need to do that. we’re not at work,” he scoffed, sitting on the bar stool next to you. “this is my first time here. recommend anything good?”
you were surprised at his casual-ness, especially since he was technically your boss too, but you answered his question nonetheless. “well, they always have really good whiskey.”
“can’t go wrong with that then,” chuuya said, requesting the drink from the bartender. “so, you’re l/n, right?”
“you... remember my name?” you blinked in surprise.
“i mean, you have worked for me. what kind of a boss would i be if i didn’t even know your name?” chuuya raised an eyebrow at you before sipping from his drink.
“makes sense,” you shrugged. “it’s just that you happen to be the first.”
“you’re also the one koyou ane-san spoke highly of,” chuuya added. “although, i heard you turned down her offer of a promotion.”
“i’m not really in great need of money,” you reasoned. “and besides, it’s pretty much the same job content anyway but i’d have to do more things.”
“well, the doing more things part you got right,” he chuckled, downing his glass before ordering a refill. “although, i get the feeling you have another reason for turning down that promotion.” chuuya looked at you expectantly and you felt as though you’ve underestimated his intuition just a bit. you looked down at your half-empty glass and sighed.
“i don’t really like being in the mafia. i’m good at my job but, i don’t care much for it, nor do i think i’m particularly good at anything else. in the end, i just feel like i’m being used?” you shook your head and laughed. “sorry, i know that sounds terribly pathetic.”
“if you don’t like something, can you really help it?” chuuya pointed out.
“i thought you didn’t like people who chickened out?” you dared to tease him.
“that’s not the same as chickening out,” chuuya wagged a finger. “because you still do what’s being asked of you.”
“fair enough.”
“i don’t know if this helps but, you’re pretty good at tying bandages too,” he said, puzzling you slightly. “one of the doctors at the infirmary told me that tomura-san wouldn’t have made it if you hadn’t stopped the bleeding quickly.” chuuya downed his second glass of whiskey before placing it on the counter and paying for his drinks. “just some food for thought,” he added, before getting off the bar stool and leaving you alone.
...
whether or not chuuya had intended it, his comment did get you thinking quite a bit. you did have good knowledge of the human body, thanks to your assassin training that taught you which were the best points of the human body to strike. the port mafia boss himself was also a doctor, so who’s to say that killing people and saving lives were separate forms of knowledge.
slowly, you began to pick up on chuuya’s way of reinforcing that idea he had initially planted. when you were put in missions with him, he’d often order you to help patch up the wounded, even encouraging you to take your ‘patients’ to the infirmary. there, you’d intently watch the nurses and paramedics do their valuable work. at times, you wondered if you were really of use because you were no longer in the front lines but chuuya reassured you that what you were doing was more than enough.
finally, you decided to file in a request to transfer to the medical department. it took quite a long time for it to be processed, since you knew that you were still valuable to the organization as an assassin, but you managed to convince the higher-ups of being able to work as an on-site paramedic who could also defend themselves in the front lines.
after being accepted, you went to your usual bar for a celebratory drink. it didn’t come as a surprise anymore to see chuuya already there, waiting for you.
...
aside from holding up his reputation of being a powerful member of the port mafia, chuuya also wanted it to be known that he was a leader his subordinates could trust. ‘what’s the point of mistreating them if you know they’re ready to lay down their lives to follow your orders?’ chuuya would always reason. he wasn’t one to dote, but when he knew someone wasn’t exactly working at their very best, chuuya took it quite seriously.
you had already caught his eye the first time you worked with him on a job. there was nothing to complain about when it came to your skill. in fact, chuuya was particularly impressed with how cleanly and efficiently you eliminated your targets. it’s just that the expression on your face, one of boredom, caught his attention just as much. it almost reminded him of his own. sure, chuuya loved fighting and the adrenaline rush he got from it was like nothing else. but at one point, he had grown tired with knowing that he would win anyway no matter what. it was why he decided to put on his gloves and refrain from using his fists.
at first, chuuya was mainly concerned with what was bothering you so he took a page out of dazai’s book -- which wasn’t something he wanted to particularly confess to -- and decided to coerce you a bit into doing something that would interest you. it wasn’t fully manipulative though, because chuuya genuinely knew you were quite good at the new skill you picked up and he could see you enjoyed that more.
then, he noticed that there was an inarguable gentleness to you. chuuya happened to read your file out of curiosity and learned about your past being trained as a young assassin. he felt a bit sorry that a different life was robbed from you and was therefore even more motivated to help steer you down the path you wanted more.
chuuya was genuinely happy that you had joined the medical department but he did find that he was seeing you less and less. you joined a few more missions as a frontline paramedic but spent most of your time in the infirmary. it was only after it hit him that he was missing you that chuuya began to realize maybe there was something else underlying his intentions.
he didn’t like chickening out of anything but that also meant he shouldn’t chicken out with facing his feelings. chuuya couldn’t come see you at the infirmary because he never got injuries. instead, he decided to meet you again at your favorite bar, the place where he first met you for real.
this time, he came with a confession. and so did you.
...
the first thing you noticed when you opened your eyes was the ringing in your ears and the dust that had seeped into your lungs. you blinked that same dust from your eyes before sitting up in a panic when you realized what had just happened. according to the higher-ups, the port mafia was going to be engaging with a very powerful enemy organization and you and your fellow paramedics and nurses in the infirmary were expected to be working all through the next few days. you were prepared as the bodies came flooding in and you just hoped and prayed that the fight would be over.
you had just finished stitching a particularly ugly gash when you heard an explosion from within the infirmary. and then, the screaming, and then, it occurred to you that the enemy had done the unthinkable.
there was rubble all around you and you struggled to get out but thankfully, you were still in one piece. but as you looked around what used to be an operating room, you realized the extent and gravity of the damage dealt. the enemy had just bombed a hospital. it wasn’t just port mafia members they were treating there but yokohama residents who had unfortunately been caught in the crossfire. sure, you were part of a mafia and used to be an assassin and you did kill people. but there was no dignity in bombing a hospital.
rage flooded you as you walked around the ruins, your eyes picking up the ugly sights of what was left of the survivors and those who were terribly unlucky. and above all else, there was a terrible sadness. if you were in the frontlines, would you have prevented this?
...
chuuya’s blood ran cold when he heard the news about the infirmary being bombed by the enemy, enough to bring him to use his fist to finish off an enemy before sprinting over to where he had heard the explosions. the enemy had dealt a low blow and chuuya wanted nothing more than to finish everyone off. along with that anger came a feeling of fear that almost blinded him as he sprinted off to where the explosions came from. you were working in that hospital. if anything had happened to you, there’s no telling what chuuya would do in his anger.
only, he quickly realized that you weren’t in danger. meters away from the hospital, still dressed in your lab coat, chuuya found you with a scalpel in each hand, killing enemy attackers. only, you weren’t just killing them. chuuya could only assume it was rage that consumed you as you straddled an enemy’s corpse, driving your scalpel repeatedly into his face.
“y/n!” he cried, grabbing onto your wrist before you could bring it down. slowly, you turned to look up at your lover. the rage in your eyes quickly turned into fear as you looked down and saw what you had done.
“i... i’m...”
“that’s enough, y/n,” you heard chuuya say softly behind you. you dropped the scalpel and looked down at your shaking hands.
“maybe i could have stopped it,” you said shakily. “i should have been on the frontlines. i just want to help people and even now, i couldn’t even do that.” chuuya watched as you covered your face in your hands.
“what am i even good for?”
he knelt down in front of you and pulled your hands away from your face. you turned away from him.
“i don’t want you to see me like this.”
“nothing can change what i think about you,” chuuya said seriously, turning your chin to look at him. with a deft hand, he removed his gloves and slipped them over yours. “all i know is, nobody is born with hands that are meant to kill.”
you looked down at your now-gloved hands and then up at your lover. he smiled and pressed a kiss to your forehead.
“i’ll be heading out now. do what you do best, okay y/n?”
you returned his smile and nodded with renewed determination. “alright.”
...
you’ve always known about chuuya’s powerful ability and prowess in martial arts, but it was only after you got together with him that you learned about your boyfriend being the arahabaki. at first, you thought it was pretty cool, until you saw the pained expression on chuuya’s face as he talked about how he never really knew why he ended up connected to the arahabaki in the first place. because of his memory loss at a young age and with his terribly powerful special ability, chuuya often felt that he was inhuman.
‘maybe... that’s why he chose to help me,’ you thought, as you watched the vulnerable expression on his face that he only showed around you.
that said, you’ve only heard about the sheer destructive ability of Corruption but because chuuya only used it in the most dire of times, you’ve never really see it for yourself. that is, until now.
you could tell that chuuya was no longer himself with the markings that covered what was visible on his skin and a grin that stretched across his face. he only activated Corruption when he knew dazai was there to stop him but it just so happened that right now, he was out of reach: floating in the sky while hurling gravity bullets around him.
“y/n,” dazai called out to you. he was heavily injured but somehow still standing. “you’ll get hurt if you stay here!”
“i need to help him!”
with a loud explosion, chuuya dropped back down to the ground, causing the earth to cave in a circle around him. he turned with his sights set on you.
“chuuya,” you backed away slowly, terrified by his empty gaze. “it’s me, y/n! you can snap out of this!” you pleaded.
“y/n!” you heard dazai yell again. he was running towards chuuya from the other side of the forest clearing. “get out of here, he--”
you couldn’t hear the rest of what he said because with a wave of his arm, chuuya sent you flying backwards until you hit a tree before crumpling down to the ground. you felt your eyes fall shut just as dazai sprinted the last few meters to touch the back of chuuya’s hand.
with his ability nullified, chuuya fell to his knees. his body was wracked with pain from having used Corruption longer than he knew he should have. he felt dazai fall to the ground behind him and turned to find that he had promptly passed out, most likely because of the blood loss from his injuries. ‘so that’s why he couldn’t stop me quicker,’ chuuya thought. it was only after he scanned the ruined area around him that he found your crumpled form lying under a tree.
it couldn’t be.
“y/n!” he cried, hauling himself to his feet despite the roaring pain in his body. he hobbled over as quickly as he could over to you before lifting you in his arms. “y/n?” chuuya called your name again. with a groan, you stirred back into consciousness.
“you’re... back,” you smiled up at him.
“fuck, i’m so sorry. i did this to you, didn’t i?” chuuya shook his head, feeling his hands tremble as he saw your injuries. “i’m so sorry.”
“you weren’t yourself.”
“i could have stopped myself, somehow!” he exclaimed. “i shouldn’t have let you come along on this mission. i shouldn’t have used Corruption.”
“chuuya--”
“i don’t want you to see me like this,” he hung his head. despite all his strength and connection to the arahabaki, chuuya was still human. and you didn’t care if you had to spend every day reminding him of that.
“you’re human, chuuya,” you said softly, lifting your hand to his face and turning it to look at you. no one else would be able to see the sheer emotional vulnerability on chuuya’s face as you said those words. only you could make him feel this way. “i wouldn’t be what i am now if it weren’t for you.”
“are you really sure you want this... that you want... me?” chuuya asked. you smiled, sitting up to brush your lips against his.
“i’m sure.”

ANGSTCEMBER MASTERLIST (feat. haikyuu!! and bungou stray dogs)
━━━━━━━━✿ ━━━━━━━━
“would you like to go out with me?”
at first, you thought it was a joke and entirely believed that it was, knowing that it was coming from the mouth of tsukishima kei. you would have laughed if it weren’t for the fact that you actually liked him and moments before you were about to get mad at him, you noticed the faint blush on his cheeks and the way his gaze flickered to the side as if he was embarrassed. then, it hit you.
tsukishima wasn’t joking.
it felt like a dream come true. you never thought that things could get better than the two of you being seatmates in class and forever working on projects as partners. the nights of the week when the two of you would stay up late cramming in the library were the ones you looked forward to. he was amazing to work with because of his smarts and an even more enjoyable conversation partner. turns out, tsukishima was pining over you the same way were over him.
“look, you don’t have to if you don’t want--”
“sure,” you interrupted him quickly, clapping a hand over your mouth when you realized you spoke too loud and had now attracted the attention of everyone else studying at the library. tsukishima snickered at the look on your face before poking your forehead with a long index finger.
“there’s this movie i think you’ll like because it has mindless but cool action scenes. how’s friday sound?” he asked.
“friday... friday sounds great,” you nodded and smiled at him, trying to hold back your excitement.
after your friday classes, you immediately dashed over to your dorm room to shower and get ready. it was your first date with tsukishima, your first day with anyone actually, and you just knew you had to look your best. you’ve never really dressed up for somebody but when you twirled in front of the mirror in a new dress that you bought, you couldn’t help but look forward to the rest of your night.
while walking to the theater, you kept wondering if tsukishima would like how you looked, or even noticed that you put in a lot more thought than usual. “sorry i’m late,” you apologized, walking up to where he was.
tsukishima blinked at your outfit as you chewed your lip in slight anticipation. was he going to like it? was he going to notice?
“you look good,” was all he said, again with that faint blush on his cheeks and his gaze drifting to the side. you felt warmth spread from your chest to your face, making you reach out to take his hand in yours.
“shall we go then?” you smiled.
...
“sorry i’m late,” your boyfriend sighed, sliding into the seat in front of you at the cafe. “our boss still hasn’t gotten rid of the idea that interns doesn’t necessarily mean coffee deliverers, contrary to what is shown on the movies.”
“i see,” you chuckled, forcing a smile as tsukishima squinted at the menu over the cashier. “don’t worry, i already ordered for you. the usual.”
“oh, thanks,” tsukishima nodded distractedly as he took out his phone and scrolled through it. you felt awkward, looking around the cafe at anything else except him.
after a year of dating, tsukishima had gotten an internship at a nearby museum working on exhibit displays. you were ecstatic at hearing the news, knowing that it was something that tsukishima really wanted to do. however, because of his work, you ended up seeing him less and less. it was something unavoidable and you were fine with it at first but, as time moved on, you began to suspect that tsukishima wasn’t just away because of work.
most of the time, you weren’t even sure why tsukishima was still dating you. after all, he was tall, handsome, smart, and cool, any girl would want to date him. and tsukishima could have any girl he wanted. ‘y/n, we talked about this,’ he said, when you brought up how he was too nice to a fellow female classmate he ended up being partnered with for a project. ‘if you’re feeling insecure you can just talk to me about it. don’t just assume things that aren’t true,’ was what he said, but you couldn’t help but think that he was dodging the issue you were trying to bring up.
“i’m just going to ask about something, alright?” tsukishima said before standing up and walking over to the counter. as he talked to the girl manning the cash register, you couldn’t help but notice how she was obviously enamored with your boyfriend. tsukishima did have that effect on people.
“so?” you asked when he came back to the table. “what were you talking about?”
“just asking about the coffee,” tsukishima shrugged. it bothered you how hard it was to read his thoughts. “anyway, how was your day?”
“oh, just the usual,” you shrugged a shoulder.
“okay, something’s wrong,” tsukishima sighed. “you can just spill it instead of sitting there and sighing for the rest of the day.”
“if you put it that way, i’d rather just not talk about it then,” you shot back.
“fine, then don’t,” tsukishima murmured, pulling out his phone again. when your food finally came, you picked at it disinterestedly with your appetite gone.
...
tsukishima knew that there was something wrong with your relationship and he was desperately trying to fix it. ‘well, not trying hard enough,’ he told himself as he dropped you off again at your dorm with a half-hearted peck on your cheek. as much as he wanted to have a nice date after a long day at work, when he noticed what you were thinking about, tsukishima just couldn’t help but snap at you.
he was well aware of how you’d look at and compare yourself to other girls that tsukishima was with and it did hurt him a bit that you’d think so little of yourself. why couldn’t you see how different you were from them and how much he liked that you were you? at the same time, he didn’t like how quick you’d assume that he would leave you or be in a secret relationship with someone else.
ever since tsukishima took the internship at the museum, he felt as if things had gotten worse too. the fact that his fellow interns were girls too didn’t make it any better. most of the time, he’d ask you to wait outside instead of fetch him because he knew it was going to make you jealous if you saw him having genuine conversations with his fellow interns.
it was a problem that he hated having to deal with, but tsukishima always ended up remembering how happy you two were in those first few months of dating and how he wished he could just return to those times. maybe, maybe somehow he could fix things.
which was why after receiving your text asking if you wanted to go on a study date at a library, tsukishima jumped at the opportunity. ‘will be a bit late but i’ll be right there,’ he texted in reply. he knew you hated it when he was late but maybe if you saw why, you’d forgive him.
after practically running out the door when his class ended, tsukishima stopped by the cafe you two had gone too just a few days ago. back then, he had asked the girl at the register if it was possible to request for a specific kind of latte art. tsukishima was slightly embarrassed when she made the quick deduction that he was planning to give something to his girlfriend. however, he was pleased to find that he could make a request.
it took some time and tsukishima anxiously checked his watch often while waiting but after a while, he was walking towards the library with two coffees in his hand and a paper bag with your favorite muffin. it was meant to be a little throwback to when you two weren’t dating yet and studied often at the library. one of the things you two bonded over was eating food in secret while hiding behind textbooks.
tsukishima was eager to see the smile on your face when you saw what he had brought. only, as he climbed the steps to the library, he was met with you standing in front with your arms crossed.
...
“where were you?”
“look, i was at work and then i passed by the cafe because i thought you would like some coffee,” tsukishima sighed. “now, can we please go inside? it’s freezing out here.”
“well, why did i see you at the cafe before your shift ended?” you asked.
“because i was let out ear-- wait, you were at the cafe?” tsukishima looked at you in disbelief. “why didn’t you come see me?”
“didn’t want to interrupt whatever appointment you were having there,” you clenched your jaw. when you decided to stop over at the cafe for something to eat and saw your boyfriend there at the counter, it felt as if all your suspicions had been confirmed. now, there was nothing left but satisfaction with the knowledge that you caught him in the act.
“y/n, you have to stop it with this whole jealousy thing,” your boyfriend shook his head at you. “i know it’s easy to feel inferior to other people, i get that.”
“i don’t know. i mean, you’re that kind of guy,” you huffed. “you can just go right ahead and get anyone you want.”
“‘that kind of guy,’“ tsukishima echoed. “is that really how you see me?”
“look, tsukishima. i just want the truth,” you sighed.
“alright then,” tsukishima let out a sarcastic chuckle. with one hand, he uncovered the top of one of the coffee cups before shoving it in your direction. it was a latte, your favorite one with the condensed milk, judging by the smell, and drawn on the milk foam was a heart.
“tsukishima...” your eyes widened when you realized the situation you had put him in. “but i thought...”
“yeah, you thought,” he scoffed. suddenly, his eyes were hard and the pang of regret that you had felt plunged deeper into your chest. “y/n, i’ve had enough.”
you bit your lip. “but... it was just a mistake.”
“it’s not just that. it’s the fact that you don’t trust me enough. i keep second-guessing how i should do things and i don’t want to do that anymore.” tsukishima looked at the ground, refusing to meet your eyes. “i’m done. that’s it.”
...
tsukishima didn’t think he’d be the type of person who was quick to fall for someone, but he realized after meeting you that he was very wrong in that respect. there was just something about you -- from your adorable small habits to the fact that you caught on to his jokes real quick -- that made it so easy for tsukishima to love your late nights at the library.
he’d never been in a relationship before, neither did he think he’d seek to get into one so soon. tsukishima knew a lot of things could go wrong, but for some reason, while the two of you took turns guarding each other while eating crackers in the library, he felt that maybe the risks were worth it.
which is why he decided to ask you out, and to his complete surprise, you said yes.
on your first date, tsukishima immediately recognized that the dress you bought was new and something in his chest fluttered when he realized that you had probably purchased and worn it for this occasion. ‘does it mean... she cares for me this much?’ he thought, eyes trailing over you as you apologized for being late.
“you look good,” was all he managed to say, even though tsukishima wished he could have said more. and when you smiled and took his hand, he knew then and there that falling for you would be worth it.
“shall we go then?”

ANGSTCEMBER MASTERLIST (feat. haikyuu!! and bungou stray dogs)
━━━━━━━━✿ ━━━━━━━━
the thing about falling for musicians and band members was that there was always going to be a distance between you two. there was the physical distance between stage and audience, and the fact that no matter how many times you showed up at their gigs and screamed about being their fans, you were never really ‘close’ to them.
needless to say, you didn’t really care about all that when you first watched akaashi keiji, the main vocalist of a student band, sing onstage in the local bar that everyone in university visited on friday nights. he didn’t look that much different from the other band vocalists you’ve seen with his curly, brown hair, white t-shirt and jeans, and dark eyes lined with black that always fluttered shut whenever he sang. no, it was the way he sang that caught your attention. his voice a beautiful tenor that drew out every syllable of the lyrics. it was as if akaashi was the siren and the crowds formed the dangerous waves that pulled you in close.
the stage lights illuminated the shine of his skin, making him look almost ethereal. the boundary between you and the stage felt even greater even though you were in the very front of the crowd. but when akaashi’s eyes fluttered open to survey the crowd, they landed on yours.
and somehow, it felt as if the distance between you two had been bridged.
...
ever since that night, you had signed yourself up to be their band’s full-time fan. you followed their social media and marked down your calendar to show up at every single gig. always, always, you made it a point to make your way to the front of the audience whenever they played. even though they were still a local band that was pretty much under the radar, you still knew that meeting them in person would take some time.
or so you thought.
“hey.”
the all-too familiar voice made you stop in your tracks as you left the bar to hurry back to your dorm. blinking with surprise, you turned around to find akaashi keiji himself leaning against the wall outside the bar with his hands in the pockets of his leather jacket. you thought you were dreaming, but he was looking right at you.
“you’re the girl who always shows up at our gigs here, right?”
“i... um, yeah!” you nodded, trying to smooth your hair as much as you could as you inched closer to him. “i... really like your music,” you smiled shyly. up close, akaashi keiji looked even more beautiful under the dim lights. the liner around his eyes looked perfectly smudged and you noticed a few piercings in his left ear.
“i’m glad,” akaashi smiled, shuffling his feet. “it’s... comforting, you know? to see a regular fan. most of the time we’re not even sure if people are going to show up.”
“tons of people do,” you said.
“but none quite like you,” akaashi narrowed his eyes at you before his lips turned up in a slight smile. “um, i feel like it would be too presumptuous of me to ask this but, would you like an autograph?”
“y-yes! definitely!” you nodded a bit too excitedly. akaashi chuckled and searched his pockets.
“i think i have a pen here somewhere...”
“oh, hold on...” you searched your purse for anything he could write on, only to come up with a few paper napkins that you always kept with you. “all i have is this, though.”
“well, same here,” akaashi said, lifting the only writing instrument he had on him: an eyeliner pencil. you couldn’t help but stare in wonder as akaashi carefully signed the paper napkin before handing it back to you.
“figured i should do something nice on behalf of the band for our number one fan before we officially disband,” akaashi smiled.
“d-disband? what? why?” you stammered.
“it’s not official yet, i haven’t told the guys about it,” akaashi rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. “but, i’ve been thinking that it’s for the best. sure, being in the band is fun but very few actually make it. konoha-san, bokuto-san, and washio-san, they trust me so they’ll believe whatever i say but i don’t want to lead them on, you know?”
“but you guys are amazing!” you protested. “i mean, sure it’s different from mainstream music and all but the lyrics that you have are straight-up poetry and don’t even get me started on the music...”
“you... think my lyrics are poetry?” akaashi looked at you with wide eyes.
“i mean... of course they are,” you said softly. “but, what i’m saying is i believe in you guys. take it from your number fan, why don’t you?” you pleaded one last time. akaashi looked down at the ground, appearing to mull it over, before smiling and nodding.
“alright then. i’ll give it a few more months.”
“you will?”
“but, if nothing happens by then. i’m afraid we’ll have to say our goodbye’s.”
“that won’t happen,” you shook your head. “i just know it.” you carefully folded the napkin with your precious autograph and placed it inside your wallet. “i’ll be seeing you in more gigs, akaashi keiji.” with a wave, you turned around and walked away.
“wait!”
you stopped again and turned around. akaashi looked, nervous, for some reason as he stuffed his hands in his pockets again. finally, he asked.
“would you like to grab a coffee sometime?”
...
you never thought you would actually be able to get to know akaashi keiji beyond the version of him he presented onstage. in the mornings, he attended class, writing song lyrics in the margins of his notebook, and worked part-time at the library. he liked drinking his coffee black and adding a few drops of lavender oil in his laundry so he slightly smelled like it. and knowing this bits of information made it even more wonderful to watch akaashi sing onstage.
true to what you said, something did happen within the few months that you convinced him not for them to disband.
“an invitation to play in the university fair? this is huge!” bokuto, the band’s drummer hooted. you watched with a warm smile on your face as you watched the band members you grew to know and love hug each other. from across the room, akaashi caught your eye before gesturing with his head to head outside.
“what did i tell you?” you grinned smugly when the two of you were alone.
“i know, i know. thank you very much for convincing me to keep the band together,” akaashi smiled at you.
“you can count always count on me to get your hopes up.”
“you have supported our band since the beginning,” akaashi bit his lip as his eyes flickered to the side. “and, i truly appreciate that but... i was wondering if you could support me a bit more... personally.”
“what? of course i will,” you nodded.
“no, i mean,” akaashi paused, inhaled deeply, before continuing. “y/n... i was wondering if you would like to be my girlfriend.”
be his girlfriend?
how could you say no?
“akaashi, of course!” you laughed, flinging your arms around his neck. akaashi’s breath tickled your ear as he pulled you close.
“i’m glad, y/n. i’m so glad,” he smiled, looking down at you. you may have started out watching akaashi from afar, but you had made it closer to him.
...
“there can’t be anything better...” akaashi sang as he played a few chords on the piano, trying out a few different ways to sing the line before settling on a progression that he liked and writing it down. his hair was a mess and he was dressed only in his pajama pants because he headed straight for the stand piano in your bedroom after rolling out of bed.
“i like the second one more,” you said out loud, watching him from where you lay on the bed.
“really?” akaashi cocked his head, playing the chords and singing it again. “hmm... maybe i could have it for the bridge?”
“definitely! and you can make konoha insert a cool guitar riff right there,” you added.
“are you sure you don’t want to be credited in the album?” akaashi looked at you with a sideways smile.
“i’m not that ready for fame,” you teased.
“ït’s literally just our second release. it’s not one to hit the charts just yet,” akaashi shook his head.
“you wanna bet?” you smirked.
“maybe not yet.” akaashi scooted over the piano bench and patted the space next to him. “come, sit here.”
giggling, you left the bed to sit beside him. you loved watching his songwriting process up close, how his thoughts just stringed the perfect words together and coming up with the most amazing melody to compliment it. you loved the sound of his voice, whether it was slightly husky in the morning or as smooth as silk after he drank the tea you’d brew for him, and how his fingers danced over the ivory keys.
“there can’t be anything better than, waking up together when the sunlight hits your face just right...” akaashi sang before pausing. “well, that’s all i got for now.”
“it sounds beautiful,” you sighed.
“that’s because it comes from personal experience,” akaashi smiled, turning to place a kiss on your forehead.
“oh, so am i your muse now?” you teased.
“no,” akaashi scoffed, absentmindedly playing a tune on the piano. “muses are people artists abandon when they’re no longer inspired by them. you,” akaashi grabbed your chin and kissed you on the mouth. “are more than that.”
...
just as you predicted, akaashi’s band grew to success in its own time. the title track of the third album was a hit success, much to akaashi and everyone else in the band’s surprise. they had offers to play on radio shows, to live studio sessions, and then soon, they were able to cut a deal with a record label for their next album. it was the life you knew akaashi had always wanted and you couldn’t be happier for your boyfriend.
you had always known that there was something captivating about akaashi, whether he was on or offstage. he grew to be popular among women and men alike and you just had to be comfortable with it. despite all that, akaashi liked to remind his fans that he already had a girlfriend. he never forgot to dedicate the songs he wrote about you on live or recorded performances and in interviews, he liked to blow a kiss at the camera just for you.
as the band’s number one fan, you still made it a point to attend all of their performances but this time, you weren’t at the very front of the crowd. you were farther now, watching akaashi sing onstage from the VIP section. the view was good but you were much farther now and for some reason, you felt uncomfortable about this.
turns out, it was a prelude to something much worse.
the distance between you and akaashi grew. the band was offered a chance to go on-tour so your boyfriend was constantly caught up in band practices, interviews, and composing new music in the recording studio. your calls with him were always cut short by his manager needing his attention. he even stopped his usual practice of dedicating songs to you.
most nights, you lay in your empty, shared bedroom or absentmindedly played the abandoned piano, wishing you could go back to those days when akaashi was always there when you woke up.
...
“y/n... you’re here!” konoha greeted you just outside the recording studio’s door.
“yeah, i wanted to surprise him,” you chuckled, holding up the box of the birthday cake you had brought. for some reason, konoha’s smile faltered at the sight of the birthday cake. “is... keiji here? did he just leave?” you asked, trying to look over konoha’s shoulder.
“y/n...” konoha paused, evidently struggling with what he was going to say. watching him formed an anxious pit in your stomach. “shit... i-i can’t keep lying to you.”
“konoha... what’s going on?” your hands trembled as they held onto the cake box as the voices from inside the studio grew louder.
“akaashi, you said it would be the last time! we can’t keep covering for you.”
“think about how y/n would feel?”
“let me through! let me through!” you exclaimed, pushing past konoha and into the recording studio room.
nothing could prepare you for what you what you were looking at. now, you understood why those ‘recording studio sessions’ would end up late into the night and why akaashi’s manager, a beautiful young woman who always made you feel less put-together, always looked smug around you.
“keiji...” your voice shook as you watched your boyfriend shift his gaze guiltily to the floor. “how could you...?”
“it-it wasn’t like that--”
“then what was it?” you practically screamed.
“look, you don’t know what it’s like dealing with all of this,” akaashi rubbed the back of his head. “all the stress and expectations and having to come up with new material--”
“you could have come to me! i’m right here, i’ve always been right here,” you bit your lip and asked what you were afraid to know. “how long has this been going on?”
akaashi shifted uncomfortably. “...a few months.”
you turned to look at bokuto who had been standing awkwardly in the side of the room since you came in. “how long?”
“longer than that,” bokuto murmured. “sorry we didn’t tell you sooner.”
“i can’t believe you,” you shook your head, slamming the cake down on a nearby table. “happy birthday, by the way.”
“y/n, wait!”
you didn’t give akaashi a chance to explain himself because you’d already seen enough. it was only when you were on a bus on the way home that the sadness started to hit you as sobs escaped from your chest. despite all of this, you missed akaashi terribly. you missed the feeling of his fingers brushing hair from your face in the morning. you missed how he’d wave at you through the glass in the recording studio. you missed hugging him and smelling lavender on his clothes. you missed the soft look in his eyes when he composed a new song dedicated to you.
with the tears running down your face, you searched through your purse for something to wipe your eyes only to come across the edge of the napkin inside your wallet. you pulled it out to find the autograph from akaashi, the very first one he ever gave to anyone, and immediately remembered that night when you two first talked.
‘to my number one fan: i hope i’ll always get to see your face in the front-row’
the thing about falling for musicians and band members was that there was always going to be a distance between you two. at first, you thought you and akaashi had managed to close that distance, only for you to end up even farther than you ever were.

ANGSTCEMBER MASTERLIST (feat. haikyuu!! and bungou stray dogs)
━━━━━━━━✿ ━━━━━━━━
kuroo tetsurou wasn’t a fan of being stuck in airports. actually, he wasn’t a fan of being stuck anywhere and having to be idly wait for something. kenma liked to say that it was karma because he kept using that ‘we are the blood that keeps the ball in motion blah blah’ back in high school. he kind of wish he could be like his best friend who was content with waiting for long stretches of time as long as he had his phone or game console.
kuroo sighed as he sat down in the waiting area, pulling his suitcase next to his feet. he already had his lunch and walked around the airport twice, browsing the shops selling overpriced local goods and a few amenities like massage chairs and spas. kuroo pulled out his phone to scroll through social media for a bit only to get bored of that too and glance at his watch repeatedly. there were eight more hours left until his flight. kuroo wished he didn’t have to travel to whole other country for the first time one his own.
little did he know, he was about to get company soon.
...
your flight had arrived at the airport early, way too early for your liking. after piling your luggage on one of the carts in the airport, you idled at the baggage reclaiming area, unable to walk to where departures was. ‘what are you so afraid of? you’ve been waiting to come home for so long,’ you scolded yourself.
a few minutes into your waiting time, you received a call from your mother asking about your flight. you bit your thumbnail anxiously as you talked to her and you don’t know what came over you, but you ended up saying: “sorry, my flight hasn’t left yet.”
“it’s delayed?”
“yeah, sorry. i probably won’t be at the airport until night there.”
“alright. maybe you can find something to do. give us a call when you’re at the airport already.”
“sure, mom. goodbye,” you said before hanging up. now, with some fresh time to kill, you pushed your luggage around the airport. it had been years since you were last in japan. in fact, this was the very airport you left for the US from. while walking around, you tried to remember if the same shops and stalls were still there. ‘nothing much has changed,’ you thought with a smile, wheeling your luggage cart into what appeared to be a waiting area that had a television and some armchairs.
you were making your way to one of the chairs when you realized that there was something strangely familiar about the man sitting in that area. he was wearing a gray, business suit and sitting on the chair with a foot propped up on his knee. what struck you most was his hair, black and sticking out it in different directions, when you realized who it belonged to.
“kuroo... tetsurou?” you said aloud. and, at the sound of your voice, he turned to see you.
...
“y/n?”
kuroo couldn’t believe his eyes. here you were, in the airport of all places, with an expression on your face that matched his. you had changed quite a bit since he last saw you but, your eyes, your lips, your face, kuroo couldn’t possibly forget any of those.
“it’s really you,” he chuckled, standing up and going over to you.
“yeah, likewise,” you smiled, eyeing him up and down. you’ve never seen kuroo in a business suit and quite frankly, he looked really good.
“i haven’t seen you since the day we... broke up,” kuroo said, eyes softening as he remembered the painful memory.
“that’s because i hopped onto a plane the day after,” you shrugged a shoulder.
“ah, right.”
“well, how have you been?” you asked, to ease the awkwardness. “never thought i’d see you in a suit.”
“right? it was weird at first but now it feels like a second skin,” kuroo chuckled. “i work for the japan volleyball association.”
“no kidding? that’s amazing!” you grinned. “i always knew you couldn’t get away from volleyball.”
“i may not be in a team but it still is fun. and how about you? you’re the one who moved all the way to new york!” kuroo asked.
“well, it wasn’t easy,” you shook your head. “it’s a pretty long story actually.”
unlike kuroo, you were more familiar with airports and traveling from country to country. you didn’t mind lingering in airports, in fact, you enjoyed them quite a bit. you found out that airports were quite similar to each other, no matter what country they were in. furthermore, time always seemed to vary among different people who were either rushing to their next flight or waiting to get to their next destination, wherever it was.
it felt like some strange form of fate that you would meet kuroo, of all people, in the airport, of all places.
“funny thing is, my flight has been delayed,” kuroo chuckled. “so, i have eight hours to kill.”
“is that so?” you cocked your head and smiled, “i happen to have time to kill too.”
...
“a little bit to the left.”
“y/n, you just told me to move to the right.”
“but you moved too much to the right!” you pouted, putting your hands on your hips. kuroo was helpless to that pout so he moved half an inch to the right. you grinned, and crouched down to peer through your video camera.
“alright, perfect! now, just say your lines.”
as tired as kuroo was, he’d do anything for you and that meant being cast in more than a few of your short films. particularly now that you were trying to put together a portfolio to attend film school abroad.
“everything alright?” kuroo asked, creeping into your room with a mug of your favorite tea. your hair was a mess and the sweatshirt you were wearing -- kuroo’s sweatshirt -- looked like it hadn’t been washed in days.
“have i told you how much i hate editing?” you murmured, eyes still focused on the screen.
“once or twice,” kuroo placed the mug on your desk and ran a hand through your hair. you sighed at the touch, leaning back against the chair.
“i just wish it would magically become like what’s in my head, you know?” you sighed.
“well, maybe whoever’s looking through your portfolio will just be impressed by my amazing acting,” kuroo joked.
“you’re acting is just alright!” you laughed, looking up and pulling kuroo closer to press his forehead against yours. “i really hope i get in.”
“you’ll do amazing, love,” kuroo murmured, pressing kisses on your forehead. “i just know it.
...
“so, that’s how i ended up with the job!” you exclaimed. you and kuroo had migrated from the waiting area to a small cafe that served really good coffee and cakes.
“amazing! who would have thought a lot more emailing was going to do the trick?” kuroo clapped his hands.
“well, you were the one who taught me how to be persistent in the first place,” you smiled at him before sipping your tea. blackberry tea, still evidently your favorite. kuroo smiled wistfully as he remembered the mugs of tea he’d make and bring to your room whenever he knew you were stressed. he even kept a metal can of blackberry tea in his apartment and when you left, he didn’t know what to do with it. in fact, kuroo had stashed it in the very back of the kitchen cabinet because seeing it reminded him too much of you.
“i’m glad that still stuck with you,” kuroo smiled up at you.
“how about you? you didn’t completely forget about me, did you?” you joked.
“you? never.”
you bit your lip at the soft way kuroo said that. of course, kuroo wasn’t the type who easily forgot people. despite how good he was at provoking and annoying people, you knew kuroo was just one of the kindest, most loyal people you would ever meet.
“in fact,” kuroo leaned back in his chair. “i still do my laundry the way you taught me how.”
“really? with putting your socks in a laundry net so it wouldn’t get lost?” you laughed. kuroo, raised his pant leg, showing off his socks.
“i’ve had these since university days,” he boasted.
“oh, i think i remember those even!” you played along. kuroo laughed, the sound bringing you back to so many nights spent watching movies and eating cereal at three in the morning. after the break-up, remembering all of those only made you want to burst into tears so you spent a long time trying to bury them in your memory. but after a while, when you thrusted yourself into your new life in a different country pursuing your dreams, thinking back to the good times with kuroo didn’t hurt so much. it was bittersweet, actually.
...
“but... i thought--”
“i know, kuroo, i know,” you sighed, blinking hard and looking up at the ceiling. this was a conversation you’ve been wanting to avoid for weeks. after receiving your application letter and the celebration, you were hit with the realization that maybe your relationship with kuroo couldn’t continue. and what’s more, kuroo kept on talking about how you guys were going to work with the long-distance. you had to break it to him.
“just think about it, okay?” you pleaded. “i’m going to be gone for a long time. even when i do have breaks in between semesters, i’ll probably have to work jobs in between to help pay for living expenses. if we did do the long-distance thing, we wouldn’t even have the time or effort to put into our relationship anymore.”
“i’m willing to!” kuroo exclaimed, his eyes wide and desperate. “i don’t mind waiting for weeks in between calls. i don’t mind that i won’t see you in person for years. i’m willing to work with this because i know you’ll be out there chasing after your dream!”
“kuroo...” you choked back a sob. how could you think of breaking up with him after hearing all that? you were never going to find another man like him.
but, you wanted other things too.
“i’m sorry, kuroo,” you shook your head. “but, i don’t think i’d be willing to continue with that.”
“y/n, you promised,” kuroo said softly. “you said--”
“kuroo, it’s easy to promise things when you don’t how it will all turn out in the end.”
“so that’s it then?” his voice turned cold.
“we can still be friends--”
“i don’t think so,” kuroo cut you off. “you probably wouldn’t want to put effort in that either.”
...
“so, are we... going to talk about it?”
“i think the day was pretty much heading to that,” you admitted. after spending a good part of the day talking and walking around the airport, you and kuroo were leaning against a railing, looking down below at the people hurrying to buy their tickets or meeting their loved ones. in a way, you and kuroo felt distant; alienated from the rushing crowd
“i... what i did and said was completely unfair,” kuroo apologized. “at that time, i was upset because all i was thinking about was what i wanted and when that didn’t align with yours, i just told myself that you were the selfish one. and, for that, i’m sorry.”
“it’s alright,” you smiled, looking at the genuine expression on kuroo’s face.
“i really convinced myself that we were going to last but i guess i was being naive about it,” he chuckled.
“you’re not the only one. i also thought that too for a time but,” you shrugged and looked down at the sea of people below. “life happens.”
“life happens.”
“hey, isn’t it almost your flight already?” you asked, looking up at kuroo who checked his watch again.
“yeah, half an hour actually,” kuroo said regretfully. “what about yours?”
“i... don’t have one,” you finally confessed. “i got off my flight earlier today and i was supposed to be picked up but, i kind of chickened out with leaving the airport and then i ran into you.”
“how come? are you running away from something?” kuroo asked, leaning against the railing next to you.
“well, more like avoiding something. when i step out of this airport, i’ll be heading into a completely new chapter of my life,” you said, staring into the distance before turning to glance at kuroo. then, you held out your hand to him.
kuroo finally noticed what had been pretty much in front of him all along: the ring on your finger. ‘oh,’ he realized, being unable to tear his gaze away from it.
“i... didn’t notice.”
“i kind of didn’t want you to,” you admitted, taking your hand back. “i feel like you wouldn’t have hung out with me for this long if you knew. so, i guess we’re even when it comes to being selfish.”
“i would have been taken aback a bit,” kuroo agreed. “but, i don’t think i’d really miss out on an opportunity to talk to you.”
“really? i’m glad,” you said earnestly, feeling your chest swell again. “in all honesty, i don’t think i’d feel this okay right now if i hadn’t run into you.”
“likewise. i’m glad to see you again, y/n,” kuroo said, glancing one last time at the ring on your finger. “so, who’s the lucky guy?” he grinned.
“i met him at work,” you felt yourself flush. “it’s funny, actually. we didn’t get along at all at first but, one thing led to another and we ended up together. he’s really sweet, a bit of a nerd to be honest, and,” you shrugged, “he makes me feel loved.” you paused and reached over to squeeze kuroo’s hand.
“if i hadn’t met you, i wouldn’t have known that i deserved to be loved this much.”
...
your fiancee texted you a few minutes later and kuroo absolutely insisted, despite your protests, to walk you to the exit. there was a strange feeling in his chest, a feeling of tightness that was slowly dissipating, and kuroo could only chalk that up to the revelation that you were engaged.
once again, he had hoped that day that meeting you here at the airport was some kind of special, destined event that was hopefully going to reignite what was lost in the past. in the end, it was a special, destined event, just not the kind kuroo had hoped for.
it hurt, almost as much as your break-up, but kuroo knew he would be able to manage it.
“well, this is me,” you smiled, turning back to him. “it was so good to see you, kuroo. really.”
“you too,” he nodded, pausing awkwardly, before deciding to spread his arms as an invitation for you to hug him. you laughed and leaned forward, allowing yourself to be engulfed by his arms. for a minute, you remembered standing in the middle of his apartment, wearing kuroo’s sweatshirt again.
“i’m happy for you, y/n. i truly am,” kuroo whispered.
“me too,” you leaned back. “we got everything we wanted.” just, not each other, kuroo added as an afterthought.
“take care!” you waved, pushing your luggage cart to where your fiancee was parked. kuroo watched from a distance as your fiancee stepped out of his car and greeted you with a hug and a kiss, before helping place your luggage in the trunk. for a moment, kuroo had a vision of him being the one greeting you at the airport, saying something like ‘welcome home, y/n,’ but it disappeared as quickly as it came.
this encounter with you in the airport had already become a part of his past.
kuroo picked up his luggage again, dragging it behind him as he walked back into the airport. it was late and he still had a flight to catch.

ANGSTCEMBER MASTERLIST (feat. haikyuu!! and bungou stray dogs)
━━━━━━━━✿ ━━━━━━━━
going on a date wasn’t sakusa’s idea, rather, it was a whole conspiracy created by atsumu, hinata, and bokuto, who all had the ‘good intentions’ to get sakusa to get out and mingle with more people. in other words, go on an actual date. his hair was uncomfortably slicked back, his shoes pinched too tightly, and despite how un-crowded the cafe he waited in was, sakusa could feel the discomfort of having to breathe in other people’s air.
‘if this person isn’t going to show up in ten minutes, i’m leaving,’ he ultimately decided. except, that’s exactly when you decided to show up. sakusa’s eyes automatically glanced up when you walked in, searching the cafe, before spotting him at one of the tables.
“i’m so sorry about that, traffic was terrible,” you sat down with a huff. “you must be sakusa-san, right?”
“...right,” he nodded slowly, studying you intently as you quickly checked your reflection in your compact mirror.
“atsumu-san told me about you,” you smiled, lacing your fingers together on top of the table. sakusa observed that your nails were cut short and filed down neatly, something that he approved of. he honestly didn’t understand why people purposely glued long, plastic nails on their real nails.
“yeah? what did he say?” he asked.
“some stuff but...” you shrugged. “does it matter what he thinks? i’m the one you’re dating, after all.”
sakusa raised an eyebrow, slightly impressed at your quick judgement. with that, he tugged his mask down, folded it, and placed it neatly on the table. “you’re right about that. shall we order then?”
first impressions meant a lot to sakusa. he knew people wouldn’t normally use first dates as ‘testing grounds’ but that’s exactly how he saw it. and why shouldn’t he? people dated for a reason and if it didn’t work out, sakusa wouldn’t feel too bothered by it.
part of him did want the date to be unsuccessful because that meant he’d be back in the safe territory he knew so well. second dates, third dates, and everything after were uncharted territory for him. sakusa knew he’d only get more uncomfortable, except for the fact that your first date did go well.
despite the fact that you were late, you made up for it by offering to buy him a coffee. you didn’t shirk away at sakusa’s bluntness, in fact, you seemed to take it in stride as just a part of him. you didn’t comment on or make fun of how he’d wipe his utensils with a clean napkin before eating with them, instead listening intently to what sakusa said about bacteria and utensil storage.
he went into the date with the expectation that he wouldn’t enjoy it as much, a prediction that he thought was fair enough for him to make. but when you asked if you could hold hands as he walked you home and sakusa looked uncomfortably at your hands, you smiled and held your hands out to him. sakusa stared at them for a moment before pulling out his pocket sanitizer and spraying your hands. he searched for any signs of slight annoyance on your face but there were none as you waved your hands to dry them.
“if you’re not too comfortable about holding my hand we can do this,” you offered, raising your pinky at him.
“isn’t this what children do?” sakusa quirked a brow.
“it can be something that we can do,” you smiled, your eyes an invitation to the uncharted waters that had started drawing sakusa in.
it was a risk. but sakusa knew if he was careful, it could be a calculated one. so, he looped his pinky around yours and resumed walking.
as far as first dates go, this wasn’t so bad.
...
“another text omi-omi?” atsumu teased. sakusa scowled, ignoring his annoying teammate as he continued to type on his phone. the annoying part was that his annoying teammate was right and sakusa wondered if he looked too eager to check his phone right after practice
[from: y/n]
5:30 pm: hey sakusa! you’re probably still at practice but just wanted to wish you a good day. let me know if you still want to get dinner :)
it was just a short message but sakusa could still feel that uncomfortable stir in his stomach. the first time he felt that, back when you held pinkies on your first date, sakusa grew paranoid and looked up ‘strange stomach feelings’ on webMD the first chance he got. but it wasn’t anything physical, rather, it came from something else.
“shut up, atsumu,” sakusa drawled, trying to look disinterested as he typed up a quick response to your message, saying that he would be htere.
“what did i tell you guys?” atsumu chided their fellow teammates. “i just knew y/n would be the one to capture our omi-omi’s heart.”
“awww, they must be real special! when can we meet them!” bokuto begged, popping up beside sakusa.
“they didn’t capture anything and even if they did, i think they have better things to do,” sakusa gritted his teeth.
although, he knew that eventually he would probably ask if you’d like to meet his teammates, probably after he’d invite you to watch one of his games. sakusa knew he wasn’t going too fast for his own liking and as he watched you enter the restaurant, once again late and slightly out of breath, he felt that slowly letting you into his life wasn’t such a bad thing.
“sorry i’m late, again,” you sighed, smoothing down your windblown hair with a sheepish smile.
“it’s alright,” sakusa said, removing his mask. “i took the liberty of ordering for you, if that’s alright.”
“is that so?” your bright eyes locked onto his. “well, let’s see if you’ve read my mind.”
“i could just ask the waiter to change your order,” sakusa offered.
“no, no! it could be like a game!” you shook your head. “don’t you want to play?” sakusa didn’t quite understand you, nor your game, but he couldn’t help but feel slightly apprehensive as he waited for your order to come. you took one look at the food on your plate before flashing him a smile.
“well, what do you know? it’s exactly what i wanted.”
sakusa didn’t why hearing that made him particularly happy. “this wasn’t much of a game, to be honest,” he murmured.
“is it because there aren’t really stakes?” you asked.
“precisely.”
there was something playful in the way you looked at him. “if you really like someone, there are always stakes.”
...
sakusa knew just what you meant, he was in uncharted waters after all. but that didn’t mean he couldn’t learn how to sail in such places. he also came to realize that it wasn’t just him letting you into his life, but you letting him into yours. sakusa expected that you were a bit of an extrovert with how openly you talked to him, only to find that you did have a secretive side. the most you’d talk about were your co-workers who got on your nerves or how you wished there were more hours in a day. sakusa noticed that you often dodged around questions, focusing on him instead. knowing how much he valued his own privacy, sakusa let you have your own.
which was why he knew that the two of you had gone through a certain ‘dating milestone’ after you introduced him to your friends. sakusa didn’t really like how everyone focused on him being a germophobe and how the conversation seemed to revolve around just that, which was why he appreciated you being there to steer the discussion topic away. but sakusa made an effort not to be his usual self because he knew how important it was for you to bring him into your world.
“i bet you’re glad that’s over,” you chuckled after the two of you left the cafe. once again, sakusa offered to walk you home.
“it wasn’t that bad,” he murmured.
“that’s a compliment from you,” you giggled, linking your pinky with his as you walked. sakusa would rather die than let anyone on the MSBY Jackals team see him like this, but for you he’d take that risk.
“hey,” sakusa suddenly stopped, tugging you to look at him. curiously, you obliged. “i... know i’m not really the gentle boyfriend type but... you can ask and expect for things, you know? people tend to side-step around me knowing the kind of person i am, well except for my teammates but, you don’t have to all the time.”
you blinked in mild surprise before asking. “so, can i be selfish then?” your eyes gave away your intentions and sakusa loved how he was able to read you and already pulled down his mask from his face.
sakusa had always been creeped out by the thought of kissing people but as he kissed you, it didn’t feel like he was missing out. rather, it was as if it was happening at the right moment.
“can i be selfish again?” you whispered after you and sakusa parted.
“i already have half a guess as to what you’re going to ask,” sakusa smirked.
“can i stay over at your place?”
...
sakusa knew that things would be a little different after you spent your first night together, but he didn’t think they’d be like this. for one, your messages to him dwindled into one-line sentences or phrases, before disappearing completely. sakusa wondered if he had done something wrong. no, he was absolutely sure that he had done something wrong and had no idea how to fix things.
he wasn’t much of a social media user and sakusa didn’t want to be the type of person who’d get angry at someone for tweeting while waiting on a message from them. he thought it would be low of him to call you out in a semi-public space so he’d end up liking your tweets in the hope of getting your attention to no avail.
what had happened?
“hey, sakusa...”
“atsumu, i don’t need this right now,” sakusa grumbled, scrolling through his unanswered messages again before realizing that atsumu didn’t use his usual nickname. he looked up from his phone to find a look of regret on his teammate’s face.
“listen, i... i’ve only heard about y/n from a friend of a friend so i really didn’t know about this...”
“know about what?” sakusa asked, despite the feeling in his gut that he wouldn’t like what he was going to hear.
“i... don’t know if it’s better for me to show it to you--”
“do it,” sakusa clenched his jaw and nodded resolutely. “i want to see.”
atsumu took his phone out of his bag and opened what appeared to be instagram. sakusa didn’t have one and he quickly realized that it was to your advantage.
if he had known about the things you’d post on your stories, sakusa would have broken up with you a long time ago.
...
the club where you were in was miles different from the cozy, little cafe where sakusa first met you. it felt like some sick parallel twist and this only fueled sakusa’s anger and motivation to squeeze past the moving bodies until he finally made his way to where you were.
now all his questions and suspicions had been answered and sakusa was practically beating himself up for not realizing things sooner. when he reached the bar counter where you were seated, engaged in more than just a deep conversation with another man, sakusa didn’t even hold back.
“you’re a bitch, you know that?”
“ah, sakusa,” you regarded him calmly. “what are you doing here? this doesn’t seem like your kind of place.”
“yeah, and you knew that, didn’t you? you took advantage of it,” sakusa practically spat, hoping that his words would deal a blow but your face remained expressionless.
“i’m sorry but it was just all too easy,” you chuckled, crossing your legs over each other.
as angry as he was, sakusa couldn’t help but feel the cold reality of despair. he didn’t want to be right about his suspicions. he wanted to be optimistic after your first few dates went so well. he desperately searched your face for the person he had linked pinkies with and exchanged messages with and had his first time with.
they weren’t even real in the first place.
“you never did love me, did you?” sakusa asked aloud. your laugh was the only response he needed.
“if it’s any comfort, you were one of my favorites,” you cocked your head at him. “oh, and maybe try not to be so guarded around the next person you’ll date. it’s a bit of a turn-off, really.”
sakusa narrowed his eyes as he looked down at you. “the next one won’t be like you.”
“how can you be so sure?”
sakusa scoffed and turned around. the pain was overwhelming, but the spite even more so. you were the kind of person who thrived off toying with other people and giving in to rage would only satisfy you further. sakusa wasn’t inclined to grant you that.
“because...” he stuffed his hands back in his pockets and turned around. “lowlifes like you surely are one of a kind.”

❀ runaway | “you said it would be the two of us against the world” feat. kageyama tobio
⇢ day 8 of angstcember
⇢ synopsis: you and kageyama had always dreamt of leaving town and starting a new life somewhere else with just the two of you
⇢ pairing: kageyama tobio x gn!reader
⇢ word count: 2k words
ANGSTCEMBER MASTERLIST (feat. haikyuu!! and bungou stray dogs)
━━━━━━━━✿ ━━━━━━━━
“let’s run away.”
you and kageyama always said those words to each other when you were alone; always infused with meaning and yet, lacking just a bit of intention. the two of you were just kids in high school, after all, what did you know about actually running away? except now, when you raised your head to find your boyfriend staring out at the sky in the dim light coming from the lamppost overhead, you could tell that this time, he was more than serious.
“let’s run away,” he repeated, this time turning to look at you.
“tobio, how?” you shook your head. “and not just how, where?”
“anywhere,” kageyama blinked, hugging his knees tighter to his chest. he was only comfortable being vulnerable around you, after guarding himself for so long. you were just the same. maybe that’s why fate somehow drew you both together. “anywhere’s better than here,” he whispered, a hand reaching out to touch the side of your cheek where a fresh bruise had bloomed, courtesy of your father.
you looked down. he was right, anywhere was better than here. in this town, with the kind of life you had, you grew up too fast and came to realize that all you ever wanted to do was leave this place. even if it meant risking everything.
“we’ll take this car,” kageyama continued, tapping a hand on the back of the pickup truck that you two were in. “and i have some friends already in the city. remember sugawara-senpai? i still talk to him. he said he could lend us a hand. and you have that biscuit tin full of money you have stashed under your bed, right?”
“it’s not an enormous amount of money...” you said hesitantly.
“it doesn’t have to be,” kageyama said, his voice rising with excitement. “i could probably get some of my mom’s leftover jewelry, but when we get there we can both find a job. i’m already being scouted by pro-volleyball teams and i’m sure you can start work at a cafe even though you don’t have much experience.”
“tobio...”
“y/n,” kageyama held your hand, his eyes fixed on yours. you knew you wouldn’t meet a man as sincere as he was. suddenly, his gaze softened as he pressed his lips against your forehead. “i don’t want to see you getting hurt anymore. i promised you i would protect you so let me do that.”
you closed your eyes and pulled him close to you, never wanting to let go. after everything you two had been through, you knew that kageyama was someone you could trust.
“alright,” you nodded. “let’s run away.”
...
nothing could match the exhilaration you felt as you and kageyama took the pick-up truck and your belongings and left town. once night fell, you managed to sneak out of your bedroom window to where your boyfriend was already waiting down below. this was it. you two were actually going to do it.
the wind from the open window whipped through your hair as the music in the car stereo played loud through the night. as soon as you zoomed past the highway, it felt as if a weight had been lifted off your chest.
“tobio,” you suddenly spoke up.
“yeah?” kageyama turned his head slightly to look at you.
“we can do anything,” you said with a laugh. “we can do anything.”
kageyama looked at you as if you were his whole world, and back then, at that moment, you were. “i love you, y/n,”he said aloud, not even bothering to hide his emotions like you usually did.
and he was glad he didn’t because nothing could replace the shine in your eyes when you heard it. “i love you too, tobio,” you smiled.
...
you knew it was going to be hard when you and kageyama decided to live on your own after you had just left high school. for a while, the two of you had to live in sugawara’s place while you worked as a waitress in a nearby cafe. kageyama had some trouble getting scouted because he ran away from his family.
the exhilaration you had felt the first night after running away had begun to fade as you were faced with the reality of things. the money you earned, even after working for long hours, was just enough to pay for your share of the rent and some groceries. but you hated your job and knew you were being underpaid but what could you do? it’s not like you had any real work experience or a university degree.
“sorry i’m late,” you heard kageyama apologize as he entered the living room. he also had to get a part-time job lifting cargo at a shipping company and most nights, he came home late and tired.
“it’s alright. want me to heat this for you?” you asked, pointing at his dinner on the table.
“it’s fine,” he shook his head and sat down next to you.
“so, how was work?”
“same as always. you don’t even need to ask me anymore.”
“i’m just doing it to be nice,” you answered coldly.
“tch, you just want to feel good about yourself,” kageyama muttered. you glared at him. for the past few weeks, things between you have been tense but you couldn’t do much about it with both of you tired from work.
“i just want to feel good about something!” you found yourself raising your voice. “things have been terrible ever since we moved out and i know it wasn’t going to be easy but it’s nothing compared to what we’re going through right now. we barely even see each other and when we do it’s just even more of this!”
“so what do you want me to do?!” kageyama yelled in retaliation, standing up to tower over you. “i didn’t promise that things would be easy. you’re the one who wanted to come!”
“you asked me to come with you!” you pointed your finger at his chest. “you wouldn’t have made it this far without me!”
“i would have!” kageyama swatted your hand away. “and if you hate it here so much then why don’t you leave?”
you blinked in surprise as if you had been slapped across the face. you wanted to cry but you couldn’t bring yourself to do it in front of him. instead, you stood up and left the table.
“maybe i will then,” you said softly before leaving the apartment.
kageyama found you moments later curled up on the back of the pick-up truck. your eyes were raw from crying and your face was buried in your arms but you felt kageyama hop into the back next to you.
“y/n...” he spoke, his voice much softer than it was earlier. “i’m... sorry about what i said. i... i didn’t mean it.”
“it sounded like you did,” you said hollowly.
“i’m sorry,” kageyama repeated. the two of you were silent for a while before you decided to sit up and lean against the side of the car beside him.
“remember that night? when you suggested that we run away?”
“how could i forget?” kageyama chuckled beside you. “you called me from a payphone crying after you had run away from your house.”
“and then you picked me up from where i was,” you added with a smile, leaning your head on his shoulder. “you’re the only one who’s ever felt like home to me.”
“i just... wish that could be enough, even though i know it isn’t,” kageyama said softly, holding your hand and interlacing his fingers with yours. “i didn’t think things would be this hard when we came here but y/n, i still want to make things better for you. for us.”
kageyama wasn’t promising anything and you both knew he couldn’t, not at this point. but that was enough to make you believe in him. he wasn’t going to sugarcoat anything or make empty promises, but he was going to stay with you.
“i believe you, tobio,” you smiled, pressing your forehead against his.
“so, will you stay?” he looked up at you as if you were his whole world, and back then, you were.
“i will. i’ll stay.”
...
slowly but surely, things changed for the two of you. kageyama finally managed to get scouted at a pro-volleyball team without the help of his family and you two were able to get your own place. you took classes at a local community college in-between your job as a waitress. it had been your dream for some time to set up your own cafe and after years of waiting and saving up, you were able to rent out a small, cozy place to start your dream.
for the first time since the day you and kageyama ran away, you felt that same exhilaration of new possibilities being open to you and you were eager to make that leap.
but, things also changed in other ways.
you and kageyama still didn’t see each other that much with you being busy setting up your cafe and volleyball practice in between ad campaigns. but this time, it wasn’t something you minded too much. back in the town where you grew up in, you didn’t have much of a support system with your abusive family. it had always just been kageyama having your back, and you his. now, you had friends, your fellow co-workers at the cafe, and new acquaintances coming and going every single day.
sometimes, you did stay up to greet kageyama when he got home with dinner and one of the desserts you made at the cafe. the two of you would migrate to the couch, recounting old memories or sharing new stories. the atmosphere in your house was a comfortable one, but you couldn’t say that being with kageyama made you happy the way you used to.
realizing that did hurt. you couldn’t help but remember all the times you had cried in his arms or the first time you watched his walls break down and swore you would do anything for him. kageyama had been your home for the longest time. only now, you didn’t need one. you could make one for yourself.
“so, after all these years, huh?” kageyama said after you broke the news to him. the two of you were seated at the dining table with cups of half-finished coffee between you two.
“i feel like i should apologize but it had been coming for some time,” you admitted. “we both knew.”
kageyama sipped from his mug and nodded contemplatively. he didn’t appear to be sad or angry or hurt. finally, he spoke. “you said it would be the two of us against the world.”
you bit your lip and nodded. “i did say that.”
“but we were dumb kids back then,” kageyama chuckled. “dumb kids who didn’t know what was in store for them.”
“hey, we deserve more credit than that,” you nudged his side and flashed him a smile. “if it weren’t for what we planned, if it weren’t for you, i don’t think i would have made it this far.” the expression on kageyama’s face was sad but he reached out and squeezed your hand. “no matter what, i’ll always be grateful to you for that, tobio.”
“and i’ll always remember the first person i’ve ever loved,” he said softly. when he looked at you, it was no longer as if he was looking at his whole world. but that’s alright. kageyama already had his own world and just because you were parting ways, that didn’t mean you had ceased to be in it.
a week later, you had moved out of the apartment after buying a place of your own. it was going to be lonely now without kageyama there to share it with but you didn’t mind too much.
as you walked through the parking lot, you passed by the very pick-up truck that you and kageyama spent so much time in. longingly, you ran a hand over the bumper, remembering that night when you two promised to run away.
smiling, you spoke out loud as if you were talking to your younger selves: “we made it.”

ANGSTCEMBER MASTERLIST (feat. haikyuu!! and bungou stray dogs)
━━━━━━━━✿ ━━━━━━━━
nothing else in the world could compare to the feeling of co-piloting a jaeger. you always remember the first time you saw one up close: all metal and weapons as far as the eye could see, being dropped into the ocean to fight off a kaiju. it looked invincible, it looked like humankind’s problems all solved.
co-piloting one was absolutely nerve-wracking. just the idea of being able to control a large weapon of that size with your mind and have it imitate your body movements sent your head spinning. even now, as you made it move across the ocean towards where the kaiju was, you still felt that unease.
“hey, don’t act like this is the first time you’re doing this,” iwaizumi’s voice and thoughts interrupted you. he flashed you a cocky grin, shaking you out of your thoughts.
of course, you weren’t doing it alone. a jaeger could never be piloted alone, both in the physical and mental sense. “sorry, just had something on my mind,” you chuckled nervously.
“yeah, well the sooner you get that out of your mind, the sooner we’ll be able to beat this thing and still be able to get something to drink later,” iwaizumi, your co-pilot and lover winked at you.
“is alcohol always on your mind, iwaizumi?” you teased.
“you know for a fact it isn’t, l/n,” he grinned. you smiled, squaring your shoulders in-sync with iwaizumi as your jaeger stood before the prowling category 3 kaiju.
“let’s do this thing.”
...
“what did you say, cadet?”
“i said, i can beat you in five moves,” you retorted, jutting your chin up as you stared straight into the eyes of iwaizumi hajime, one of the youngest jaeger pilots who also happened to be your trainer.
“i’d like to see you try,” he narrowed his eyes at you before jerking his head in the direction of the training mat in the center used for sparring matches. you strode to your end of the mat and got into fighting stance. it wasn’t that you didn’t respect iwaizumi, quite the opposite actually, but you were eager to prove yourself, eager to get recruited to become a co-pilot.
and besides, as someone who had to fight every single day when your town was destroyed, you were confident in your skills.
but so was iwaizumi, who had been a cadet when he was just a teenager and a pilot when he hit eighteen. he had fought people and kaijus alike and expected that he would make you eat your words seconds into your sparring match.
what neither of you expected was that you would be trading blows, without ever landing a single hit, for quite some time. it came to a point that not only the cadets but other officers nearby came to watch the match unfold. suddenly, both of you were stopped by the captain and head of the base.
while you felt a sudden rush of adrenaline at his approving gaze, iwaizumi felt as if a weight was dropped in his stomach. there was a chance that you two were drift-compatible.
...
“let’s finish him off!” iwaizumi exclaimed.
“you read my mind!” you grinned as the two of you raised your jaeger’s plasma cannon and aimed it at the badly wounded kaiju. there was a loud hum and the crackle of electricity as the plasma cannon charged before firing a shot. you watched with a smile on your face as the kaiju was blown to pieces across the ocean.
“well, that’s that then,” iwaizumi said.
“good work you two,” your captain’s voice crackled over the radio. “as expected of miyagi base’s best duo.”
“we have to come up with a flashier name,” you told iwaizumi as you two maneuvered your jaeger back to base. “i mean, that just sounds like a mouthful and not nearly as fear-striking.”
“oh yeah?” iwaizumi raised an eyebrow at you. “how about the miyagi demons?”
“why demons? aren’t we supposed to be helping people?”
“yeah but from the kaiju’s perspective, we’re the demons.”
“i don’t know if they’re capable of having that opinion,” you snorted.
“hmm, miyagi menaces!” iwaizumi said proudly, causing you to laugh.
“you are such a dork, you know that?”
“shut up, i don’t see you coming up with cool names,” he pouted.
“we have the rest of the night to come up with all the cool names,” you smiled, visibly relaxing now that the entire ordeal was over. even though it was an honorable job, being a jaeger pilot meant that whenever you and iwaizumi went out on a mission, there was a chance that you wouldn’t come back. you had lost too many friends and acquaintances along the way from kaiju attacks and each time you and iwaizumi made it home only felt like you had prolonged your death date. if it wasn’t today, it was going to be on another day.
‘but not today,’ you smiled to yourself as you and iwaizumi headed back to base. only, you were suddenly interrupted by your captain’s voice on the radio.
“l/n, iwaizumi! our signals have picked up something new!” he exclaimed. you felt iwaizumi’s panic first hand as you two quickly turned around to find the spot where you had just killed the category 3 kaiju turn red, meaning another was about to surface.
“a double attack?!” you verified, hoping you were wrong.
“i-it wasn’t in the prediction,” your captain replied. “some kind of anomaly or the enemy just getting smarter.”
“either way, we still have to kill it, right?” iwaizumi growled, hefting the plasma cannon up.
“i don’t feel good about this...” you murmured as you two got into stance.
“neither do i,” iwaizumi said through gritted teeth. “but i’ll make sure you get back home in one piece. i promise.”
“alright,” you nodded, smiling a tight-lipped smile at him before turning your attention to the kaiju that rose to the surface. this one was much bigger than the one you had just faced before, probably twice the size of the jaeger you were in. and to make matters worse, you could tell that it’s entire body was covered with armor plating and it had a long tail with spikes on the end.
with your thoughts connected to iwaizumi’s, you could feel even his unease wash over you like a wave. who knew if either of you were going to make it?
...
it was the drifting that you were worried about. almost anybody could train themselves physically in preparation to become a jaeger pilot, but very few had what it takes to expose themselves mentally with someone else. it was easier for people who were siblings or lovers or best friends, but you and iwaizumi didn’t know each other prior to your first meeting. even after you two were forced to share a living space in the base so that you two would get closer.
but you and iwaizumi were guarded with your own demons that you were reluctant to expose to the other. the first time you tried drifting, neither of you were willing to open your minds and ended up with both of you getting kicked out of the drift.
which was why you and iwaizumi finally decided to sit down inside your shared bedroom to have a little sharing session. you couldn’t help but laugh when he suggested it but both of you knew just how much you needed this. it was either that, or pass on the role of co-piloting to other cadets.
“okay, i guess i’ll be the one to start,” you exhaled, gripping the sheets under you for comfort as you told iwaizumi how you ended up in the co-piloting program. you lived in a town near the coast and when the kaiju started showing up, it was one of the first ever places that was hit. nobody was prepared, especially not you.
“i’m sorry,” iwaizumi whispered as you recounted how you were running through the city, pushing past the crowds, only to turn around to see that your parents who were supposed to be right behind you were lying in a crumpled heap on the ground.
“all the more reason to fight them, you know? so less people end up like me,” you shrugged. “you... don’t have to open up again if you don’t want to.” after all, iwaizumi and his former co-pilot, oikawa tooru, had been quite famous back in the day for being young, amazing jaeger pilots. that is, until they faced a category five kaiju with a broken plasma cannon.
you still couldn’t forget the sight of the kaiju punching a hole through the jaeger, through the pilot’s chamber. you could only imagine how it felt like for iwaizumi.
“it was... intense,” he exhaled, his brow furrowing. “one minute he was just there and the next, the drift connection had completely disappeared but i could just feel him leave. luckily i was able to activate the escape pod.”
“we’ll fight them,” you said, resting your hand over his. “together. we’ll fight as many of them as we can.”
for the first time in a while, you and iwaizumi had come to a mutual understanding. iwaizumi had a legitimate reason for not wanting to be in the pilots’ chamber again, so you wanted to make it worth it.
...
you were living right in your worst nightmare.
fighting category five kaijus was nearly impossible without some form of back-up. the miyagi base sent in their jets to fire bombs at the kaiju but with its armor plating, it had little to no effect. your only hope was aiming at the kaiju’s underbelly, but even that was difficult.
your own jaeger was beat up, thanks to the kaiju’s tail and from sustaining a flurry of hits. “brace yourself!” iwaizumi yelled as the kaiju closed its jaws around your jaeger’s right arm and using it to haul you up and toss you to the side. the force of the impact was absolutely jarring and it felt as if your entire head was scrambled.
“y/n! are you alright?” you heard iwaizumi call out to you. the side of his head was bleeding after you were both thrown against the back of the pilot’s chamber. luckily, you were both still strapped into your suits and still very much in the drift. you both got to your feet to find the kaiju still prowling towards you, taking its sweet time.
“how are we going to beat this thing?” your voice shook, knowing that iwaizumi could feel your hopelessness. your mind through the memories of earlier that day: you and iwaizumi eating cereal while watching TV, watering the little succulent you kept by the window, eating and joking around with some of your friends at the base, iwaizumi giving you a quick kiss before you both suited up. was this going to be your last memories?
“hey. we’ll be alright,” iwaizumi said aloud, looking at you with a soft smile on his face. you wondered how he could even smile like that in this situation. “i promised, didn’t i?”
you nodded slowly. as a jaeger pilot, you were always prepared to die when you went out on new missions. and if that meant going down fighting, hopefully taking the kaiju down with you, with the man you loved, you were prepared to do just that.
...
it wasn’t that rare for couples to end up as jaeger co-pilots, or for co-pilots to end up as couples. but that only made it all the more tragic whenever one or both of them died during a mission. you knew fellow co-pilots who had postponed their weddings only for them to die, or for one co-pilot to be driven mad after losing their partner. it was enough to deter you from having feelings for iwaizumi, but not completely.
because of your drift connection, it didn’t take long for either of you to discover your feelings for each other. after a particularly hard mission where both of you almost died, iwaizumi ended up confessing to you in the changing room after you both departed your jaeger.
and seeing that it was impossible for you to be apart from each other, both of you gave in.
“do you think we would have met if it weren’t for the kaijus and the jaeger program?” you asked one night while the two of you were in bed, your head laying on his chest.
“i like to think that we do,” iwaizumi chuckled, running his hand through your hair. “maybe we’d meet each other in high school or university or something.”
“what would you have wanted to be?”
“a sports trainer,” iwaizumi said softly. “i was actually into playing sports back then. how about you?”
“i wanted to own a flower shop,” you chuckled.
“you? a flower shop?”
“don’t laugh!” you smacked his arm lightly.
“you’d make a wonderful florist,” your boyfriend laughed and kiss you on the forehead. “maybe i’d run into you while buying flowers for my mom on mother’s day.”
“and i’d definitely remember the large, muscular guy who entered my shop,” you giggled. “do you think it’s possible? for things to go back to normal? for us to actually survive this whole thing?”
“i don’t know,” iwaizumi replied honestly. “but i know what i want: a house by the sea for the two of us, that’s what i want.”
...
“i’m sorry, y/n.”
that was the last thing you could feel him think before iwaizumi kicked you out of the drift, sending you reeling. the kaiju was approaching and fast.
“hajime! what are you doing?!” you panicked, turning to look at him but his brow was furrowed in concentration as he manipulated a few buttons on his controller. he was piloting the jaeger by himself. before you could say anything else or force yourself back into the drift, you felt yourself being pulled back by the security straps attached to your suit. you recognized the sensation back from when you were still in co-pilot training practicing the emergency protocols for evacuation.
evacuation.
with sudden horror, you realized what iwaizumi was planning, what he planned all along, to do.
“captain? i’ve initiated emergency evacuation for l/n,” you heard him speak into the radio. “please, please make sure to get to their escape pod.”
“understood, iwaizumi,” your captain’s voice crackled over the speakers. “we can’t thank you enough for your bravery and sacrifice.”
“no! hajime don’t! let me stay! let me do this with you,” you screamed even as you were loaded into the escape pod.
“sorry, y/n,” you finally heard him speak. it was as if time had slowed down as he turned to look at you once more. you didn’t want to believe that this was going to be the last time you would see iwaizumi’s face ever again. you would never wake up next to him in bed or eat cereal from the same bowl or dream about a future that you knew now you could never have.
“i... i don’t want to go back if you’re not coming with me,” you said.
“i know it’s going to be hard but, try to live well, alright?” iwaizumi said and pressed the button, fully ejecting your pod out of the jaeger before you could say anything else. your screams filled the escape pod as you hammered against it uselessly, even as the kaiju descended on the jaeger with its lone pilot before iwaizumi pressed the self-destruct button.
you’ve always hated funerals, having gone to far too many of them. especially when the deceased co-pilot’s partner was there to receive any medals of honor in their place. that was the first thing you thought of as the people in the base helped you out of your escape pod, offering messages of sympathy for your loss. because of his sacrifice, iwaizumi was surely going to be granted quite a lot of medals with you receiving them in his place. as if they could be enough to make up for the space in your bed and the house by the sea that would forever stay empty.
