i kinda wanna share my banana man & bung vulchungo lore but i fear it's far too disconnected from the general consensus on what the music video's actually about. i also majorly furry-ified it.

hi there, i got into a sort of conversation with someone about banana man and remembered an image you shared a while back comparing it to minstrelsy/blackface with a checklist. do you still have that on hand? i'd like to share it
I don't know how much I stand by whatever specific image I made once upon a time, but I'm willing to re-explain the difference:
What Banana Man has in common with clowns:
Exaggerated expressions and outlined lips. (Traditionally, clown makeup has a white base, not colored.)
A carnival/vaudeville theme to the album.
It's silly.
What Banana Man has in common with minstrelsy:
Exaggerated expressions, outlined lips, and big goggle eyes, like in vintage Darky iconography.
A vaudeville theme to the album. Minstrel performances and tropes were all over vaudeville, as well as the movies, cartoons, and carnivals of the '20s-'30s.
They sing as a group and call themselves Bung Vulchungo and the Zimbabwe Songbirds. I've tried to check and as far as I can tell this isn't a reference to a real machine in MMMM, but it sure fits the naming conventions of minstrel groups.
Most importantly, these are white guys using an exaggerated Black accent and cartoonish persona to perform a pastiche of Black music on a comedy platform. That's simply what minstrel performance is. Painting your face comedically for that is just another bad faith decision no matter the claimed inspiration.
Look. The claimed inspiration for Banana Man is Harry Belafonte's version of Day-O, the Banana Boat Song. One of the oldest stereotypes of minstrelsy was to present Black life as simple and happy-go-lucky. Day-O is a traditional song about surviving hard, dehumanizing work picking bananas. Banana Man is a comedy song where bananas symbolize irresponsible island fun vs. uptight modern city life. Of course it wants to be an earnest tribute (while conflating Zimbabwe with Jamaica, at that). Old-timey minstrelsy liked to consider itself earnest tribute, too.
Anyways. I recommend that people at least read the Wikipedia page on blackface to grasp that it's connected to a whole musical tradition, not just "someone trying to make their skin look darker".
On a better note, here's Harry Belafonte talking about the origin and meaning of Day-O. That link leads to a whole concert of his from 1988, by the way! If you enjoyed how a pastiche of Belafonte sounds, you might as well enjoy more of that style that much closer to the source.

Do you see banana man Hopping over on the white hot sand Here he come with some for me Freshly taken from banana tree (one, two, three, four)111!!!
Banana man me want a ton?°?°?°?1?!??!?! Give me double on the bonus one Give me more for all me friends This banana flow never end
Do you want a banana? Peel it down and go mm mm mm mm........ Do you want a banana? This banana for you!!!!!
Tonight we dance around the flame Then we get to play the spirit game Spirit names we shout out loud!!11 Shake the thunder from the spirit cloud! All the songbirds in the tree Chant a tune to let the spirits free Then we see them in the night Spirits jumpin' by the fire light
Do you want a banana? (Do you want a banana) Peel it down and go mm mm mm mm Do you want a banana? (Do you want a banana) This banana for you
Look you your too uptight you know You can laugh and kick it back and go (we) But without a rhythm or a rhyme You do not banana all the time Fly away from city on the run Try to make a little fun
Look you come to the bungalow African't you tell me don't you so Don't you love the bumping of the drum Make you shake until the bum go numb Let the bungo play you 'til you drop This banana never stop (never stop, never stop)
Forget all your troubles and go with the flow Forget about whatever you may never know Like whether whatever you are doing is whatever you should And whether anything you do is every really any good And then forget about banana when it sticks in your throat And when they make you want to bellow but your stuck in a choke And you forget about the yell from the colorful men That'll make you take another and make a mock of your plan
Bungale bungalo make up your mind and tell me no umm shh
Well it's nine o'clock and it's getting dark And the sun is falling from the sky I've never left so early and you may wonder why
Tomorrow morning on the plane No banana make you go insane Floating back to busy town No banana make you want to frown
Do you want a banana? (Do you want a banana?) Peel it down and go mm mm mm mm Do you want a banana? This banana for you
im going insane ik
