Peel one lemon and one tangerine, put in a high speed blender with a peeled chunk of ginger (I used about 7g) a teaspoon of turmeric root blend or half a tsp of ground turmeric powder, and add some manuka or wildflower honey to taste - 1 to 3 tbsp as per your preference. Finally add 150-200ml chilled water and blend for around 45-60 seconds. Pour thru a fine mesh sieve into a jug and use a spoon to get as much liquid through as you can. Serve in shot glasses and drink immediately or store in a glass bottle in the 'fridge and drink within 24 hours. Should I buy a Smoothie Maker or Go For A Bullet Blender?

The first issue to consider is whether to buy a bullet blender or jug blender or smoothie maker

They are very similar machines. The main difference being that a smoothie maker has a tap to dispense the drink from. And tend to have push button controls rather than rotary dials, so they look more modern.

Jug blenders perform the job of making thick fruit smoothies almost as well as smoothie makers. However they are probably less of an attraction to encourage children to use to make healthy drinks.

A bullet blender is more of a personal blender. If you have to make just one cup or glass of smoothie, you simply add the ingredients, Twist the jar over the base and it whirs into action. Whipping out your smoothie in seconds. You just untwist and drink it straight from the bullet blenders cup which come in different sizes.

I tend to find that the ingredients needed to make a home made smoothie cost around half that of a shop bought  one – and with even greater savings over ones in a cafe.

A further advantage is that smoothies from shops are often Pasteurised to extend their shelf life. This reduces their goodness.

What to look for in a Smoothie Maker

Some of the features to look for:

Speed settings Most will have at least two speeds. Sometimes called mix and smooth speeds. The more versatile ones have variable speeds which gives more control. And others have a pulse setting to give a burst of power. Nearly all will be able to crush ice.

Non-slip feet Useful to stop the machine moving around.

Jug material Glass is less likely to scratch than plastic.

Cleaning Taps can be removable to make cleaning easier. And a removable blade and a dishwasher safe model  makes  cleaning much easier.

Lids Most include  a strainer to filter out any remaining lumps.

Stirring sticks These fit through a hole in the lid, allowing you to move the ingredients around so that they get thoroughly blended.

Today, I was using a Bullet Blender and had difficulty unscrewing the cap off of the cup. I then realized, this was a thermodynamics problem.

The cap is always on the cup, keeping the volume constant. Work is put into the system, through the cap’s blades rotating. Since there is work done to the system, and the volume is constant, this means the pressure must rise.

I looked at blogs complaining about this problem. Users are perplexed that they must always screw the lid on too tight to begin with. But no! It isn’t them--it is the change in internal energy inside the blender!

I’m already thinking of ideas to change the design of the blender and maybe email my professor about it.
