Top 10 African Inspired Fashion Trends – The Afropolitan Effect
Western fashion has often looked to African and African-American culture for inspiration but this time around the world seems to want an official romance with it. Here’s what you should know about when the affair started and how Afropolitans are changing the narrative.
Western designers have been flirting with African symbols, patterns and fibers since as far back as the 1970s when Yves Saint Laurent created a fashion collection that evoked images of an exotic Africa for non-African audiences. These collections were based on what Western designers imagined Africa to be as opposed to what it really was.
As expected, this cultural appropriation, which was not benefitting African designers or textile weavers in any way created an uproar because it was a one-sided affair and was not mutually beneficial. Africa was the glamorous mistress whom Western designers wanted to profit from but not empower. The resistance also came because no one can tell Africans how to be authentically African. Despite the deep cultural similarities, the countries in the continent share different political climates, geographic realities, languages and weather. Meaning that there is no one single narrative of African reality.
These diverse experiences of Africans gave rise to the term Afropolitan. Afropolitans are young Africans with a global outlook, upwardly mobile, culturally savvy, changing the perceptions about Africa through creative expression and redefining what it means to be African in the midst of a multitude of subcultures. To be Afropolitan means we understand that the world is a global village (heck, we are products of that globalization), and that design inspiration can come from anywhere. However, if the fashion world borrows from Africa we ask for recognition, inclusion and empowerment of African designers and retail brands that have worked hard to keep evolving African style, giving it new currency and new associations.
With this understanding, let’s take a look at the top 10 Afro-inspired trends for women that have found their way to the retail fashion streets.
#1 - Matching Couple Outfits
Matching or uniform outfits are the status quo for African couples and family members at special occasions such as weddings and birthdays. Fabric is bought in bulk and made into different glamorous attires by family and friends for an event, to serve as a form of identification, solidarity and love. The world has taken a leaf from this culture by updating pre-wedding photo shoots from matching T-shirts to full matching outfits for couples. on the other hand in winter outfit like boss jacket is the perfect one with the T-shirt for the couple.
#2 - Afro-Pop Culture T-Shirts
Just like African-Americans made hip-hop a dress code, the custom T-shirt era has ushered a longing for expression of different African realities especially by urban African youths. Using personal motifs like hair-do, music and food in bold and unusual ways is now the new cool.
#3 - Boubous & Kaftans
Loose fitting garments worn by African men and women called Boubous or Kaftans have become a wardrobe staple all over the world.
#4 – Tie & Dye
Cultures across the African continent have various tie and dye techniques and motifs signifying varying ideas. Today, these colorful tie-dye prints are a must-have for women all over the world.
#5 - Fringe Love
Traditional African fabrics like Kente. Akwete, Asooke are woven using different types of threads. The ends of the threads are left to hang out as decorative elements at the base and sleeve of garments. The African fringe has a western cousin but the fringe love is universal.
#6 - Head Wraps
African head wraps are made from local fabric or Ankara prints and tied round the head in an intricate style. The trendy head wraps of today are sewn together as ready-made fashion accessories..
#7 - Wooden Jewelry
Jewelry made from utilitarian products like wood have their inspiration from African sculpting and carvings.
#8 - Neck Rings
African neck rings were worn by the South Ndebele of South Africa as part of their traditional dress and as a status symbol for the wearer. Today, statement gold chokers shaped like rings are a hot fashion trend.
#9 - Ankara Print
Though it is said that these prints were brought to Africa by Dutch textile manufacturers, it is the stylish use of these materials by Africans that popularized the fabric. It was Africans who requested for specific patterns to be printed and it was Africans who helped it evolve and popularized it; we made it ours.
#10 - Head to Toe Monochrome/Matching Sets
Going head-to-toe in one color or pattern is a fashion trend that has its roots in African fashion. Yards of fabric are given to tailors to make matching tops and bottoms for both men and women as day wear and occasion wear. The world has caught this monochrome bug.
The rise of the Afropolitan class means that there is a hunger for truly meaningful clothing that helps Africans in Diaspora connect with their roots. How can you play your part? Seek out small independent designers and/or brands and patronize them because by doing this you are strengthening the systems and supporting designers both in Africa and in the Diaspora. Looking for where to shop authentic African designs with global spice? Check out Joe Stylee. Do you know other authentic African brands? Please share in the comments.

How many OCs do you have? Any favourites?
a lot!!! a lot. so many. our main and favourite project is called Indie, which we've been developing for.. six years now, off and on but mostly on. it started out as an experiment in creating unique and interesting characters in a realistic fiction setting, as well as playing with character relationships. basically, we're filling out a fictional university in Florida with characters. Walton Hall is a dorm with the bulk of the characters. it has roughly 80 people in it. there's also Stotsky Hall, which we're working to fill out {though most in there are very underdeveloped}, a handful in Ford Hall, a couple of family members and coworkers, and then a gang that i don't remember why we added but hey! it's there now!
our favourites are definitely Phyllis Smith, Martin Smith, Zachary Seth, and Opal Jeanne. they're by far the most developed out of all of them, and the main characters for the WIP we have in this project. they're not our only faves though!! beware, old art incoming
[Image ID: a reference sheet for a character named Evelyn Bangarden. she's a Vietnamese woman with tan skin, brown eyes, a gray bob, and a mole under her lip. there's a drawing of her standing with her arms in front of her stomach, and she's wearing cargo pants and a shirt that says, "You had me at pizza". a headshot of her in the bottom left corner shows her with brown roots in her hair and a pair of round glasses. text above the fullbody reads "Evelyn Bangarden", and next to her is "5'". other text on the image reads, "she/her, Vietnamese, 20, bisexual, Walton room C3, Education major, long eyelashes, mole under lip, cheesy shirts, cargo shorts, optional roots showing, optional glasses". end ID]
Evelyn's a very fun, cheerful character to play around with!! she's hoping to become an elementary teacher, she has a succulent collection, she's very in love with her boyfriend Daniel Wieland, and she's figuring out that she's asexual. she's roommates and friends with Ingrid Elkins
[Image ID: a reference sheet for a character named Ingrid Elkins. she's a Black woman with dark brown skin, dark blue hair in a bun, and blue eyes. to the right is a fullbody piece of her with her hands in her pockets and her tongue out. she's wearing a ribbed gray tank top, a baggy pair of jeans with gold astronomical art on one leg, a chunky brown belt, and tie-dye flip flops. on the bottom left is a drawing of her face, showing she has a silver eyebrow piercings, small earrings, and a tongue stud. text on the reference sheet reads, "Ingrid Elkins. she/her. Walton room C3, forensic science major, RA for her floor, bisexual, 22, piercings, always has her tongue out, not thin, 6'2"". end ID]
please, please ignore the old ref. we've had a long art block, most of our OCs have really bad refs that we've needed to redo for some time now. i don't know why she always has her tongue out, we made her when we were like, 12, and we're too attached to her now. if we redesign her we will never stop thinking of her current design
she also needs a lot more development. she's Opal's best friend, she's Evelyn's friend and roommate. she runs a studyblr, she's very generous and helpful to people, she likes writing but isn't great at dialogue, she's a morning person, and the ref is wrong. her degree isn't in forensic science, it's marine biology. we changed it
the exhaustion is Fucking Hitting Us:tm: so i'm just gonna post more refs and hope you appreciate our OCs even without a proper explanation of who they are

Hello tumblr I’m live blogging from my house amid the creation of my very first real merch run!! Today was a very busy day, I made both of the silk screens, finished assembling my new screen press, and am currently waiting for the last round of reverse tie-dyes to finish developing in my shower so I can rinse them out and toss them in the wash and go to bed. Tomorrow I will actually print the shirts!!!
Also it would be cool if future me could keep in mind that bulk reverse tie dye is a terrible idea and I should never do it again!

What's Trending in Blank Apparel Customization
Personalized blank apparel has become a fashion trend that not only allows individuals to express their unique style but also promotes a sense of individuality and creativity. In today's fashion landscape, purchasing wholesale blank apparel and customizing them is hotter than ever, and is more accessible than you might think. Let's explore some of the hottest trends in personalized blank apparel and how you can make them a part of your wardrobe.
1. Custom Embroidery: Embroidery is making a strong comeback in apparel customization. Whether it's your initials, a favorite quote, or an intricate design, custom embroidery adds a touch of sophistication and personalization to the garment. Popular choices include embroidered names or logos on hoodies, caps, and polo shirts. The intricate detailing and texture of embroidery make it a standout choice for those looking to make a statement. Remember to purchase apparel in bulk to get volume discounts on purchases.
2. Vintage and Distressed Designs: The vintage and distressed look is all the rage in personalized apparel. Faded graphics, retro fonts, and distressed finishes give blank apparel a worn-in and nostalgic feel. From vintage band tees to distressed denim jackets, this trend adds a touch of authenticity and character to your wardrobe. You can choose to personalize your blank apparel with vintage-inspired graphics or go for a distressed effect to give it a lived-in vibe. Tommy Bahama t-shirts are a great choice to get started.
3. Tie-Dye Revival: Tie-dye is back and bolder than ever. This trend allows you to unleash your inner artist by creating unique and vibrant patterns on blank apparel. From t-shirts to sweatshirts and even socks, tie-dye customization is a fun and creative way to express yourself. You can experiment with different color combinations, techniques, and designs to achieve a personalized look that's all your own.
4. Custom Prints and Graphics: Custom prints and graphics are a timeless way to personalize your blank apparel. Whether you're a fan of bold and colorful designs or prefer a more minimalistic approach, custom prints allow you to showcase your personality and style. From custom illustrations and typography to photos and abstract art, the possibilities are endless when it comes to custom prints.
5. Monogramming and Initials: Monogramming and initials are a classic and elegant way to personalize your apparel. Adding your initials or monogram to a blank shirt, sweater, or jacket can instantly elevate its look. This trend adds a touch of sophistication and personalization to your wardrobe, making it a timeless choice for personalized apparel enthusiasts. For this, try Brooks Brothers shirts as the brand earned its reputation for its timeless styles.
6. Bold Typography and Statements: Typography is a powerful tool for personalization. Bold and expressive statements, quotes, or slogans can be printed or embroidered onto blank apparel to convey your thoughts, beliefs, or sense of humor. From oversized lettering on hoodies to witty phrases on t-shirts, personalized typography adds a unique and impactful element to your clothing.
7. Collaborations and Limited Editions: Collaborations between blank apparel brands and artists or designers have become increasingly popular. Limited-edition personalized apparel featuring unique collaborations can be highly sought after by fashion enthusiasts and collectors. These collaborations offer a fusion of artistic expression and fashion, resulting in one-of-a-kind pieces that stand out in your wardrobe. You can find high quality limited edition collections of Tommy Bahama polo shirts, if you don’t know where to start.
In Conclusion
Personalized apparel is more than just a fashion trend; it's a form of self-expression. Whether you prefer the timeless elegance of monogramming or the creativity of tie-dye, there's a personalized blank apparel trend for everyone. It allows you to create clothing that reflects your individuality, making a fashion statement that is uniquely yours. So, what's hot in personalized blank apparel? It's all about embracing your creativity and wearing your personality on your sleeve—literally. You just need to find the right garment from the right brand. Personalized blank apparel is a trend that's here to stay, offering endless possibilities for self-expression and style.

Some more masc/unisex alt ideas:
Mesh shirts of any kind, be they loose or tight, long-sleeved or short-sleeved, solid color or patterned, work GREAT as layering pieces or on their own.
Neck ties, cravats, and jabots are all great for formal wear and can add lots of gothic elegance to a vest or blazer. Collar pins also look really nice with a button-up shirt, especially if they have chains on them.
Lace button-up shirts look amazing and work really well for androgynous looks and people who can get away with not wearing anything underneath.
Button-up shirts with fun, spooky/Halloween patterns are also great! Hot Topic and Creepy Co. have some, and you can also sew your own if you're handy with a sewing machine.
Decorating hoodies to fit your style is a great way to have a comfy, unique item of clothing. Pins, patches, safety pins, D-rings, grommets, paint, lace--put anything you want on that thing. You can also cut off a graphic from a t-shirt and safety-pin it to the back of your hoodie--this is a great way to reuse a shirt that doesn't fit anymore!
Bleach and reverse tie dye are cool ways to alter plain t-shirts and pants. You don't even need to paint designs with the bleach if you don't want to; you can just scrunch and rubber-band something and put it in a bucket of diluted bleach, and bam! Cool new shirt. You can also splatter it with bleach if you'd prefer, and you can use a cutout of something to create a silhouette with the splatter method. This can also be done with spray paint.
Belts! Belts, especially with metal accents like studs or grommets, or really cool buckles, look great with any outfit where you'd want to tuck in your shirt.
I also find that hardware tends to look more masc. Chain necklaces can look really cool with masc outfits and are pretty easy to make. D-rings and O-rings can be bought in bulk on Amazon, and I also recommend getting screw-on spikes and grommet tape. More metal=more interesting.
As for shoes, creepers, combat boots, platform boots, and oxfords are all great options. Cowboy boots work, too, if you're a country goth. Converse-style shoes can also work, and you can paint cool designs on them. Any black men's shoe will do, honestly, if you're on a budget. Boots are probably easier to find than platforms or creepers.
Top hats work really well with formal outfits, too. I see them more with romantic, Victorian, and steampunk looks.
Fingerless fishnet gloves look cool on everybody, full stop.
Leather cuffs, studded or not, also look great if you want a bit of jewelry, but don't want to overdo it. It's also pretty easy to make cuffs and chokers by cutting thrift store belts. Just look for one that's soft and malleable and the width you want.
If you're wanting to wear a bit of makeup, some masc makeup looks I've seen focus more on subtle smokey eyes and no lipstick. Neutral colors that make your eyes look hollow and a little bit dead can also be a fun, subtle goth look.
I think that's all I've got to add. I love how versatile alt styles can be with all kinds of gender presentation! Never let yourselves think that goth is "only for girls/feminine-presenting people," friends!
Being Masc & Goth
This blog usually isn't fashion-focused, but I was thinking about alt fashion and how it's sometimes a struggle to figure out how to style things in a masc way if you're interested in darkalt fashion, but you don't want to go too casual or basic with it. So I thought I'd throw together some tips, link some DIYs, and maybe throw in a few moodboards. I want to preface this with one thing: You do NOT have to adhere to traditional gender roles. Fuck anyone who tells you that you do. If you're a guy and you want to get into alt fashion don't let anyone tell you that you can't pull off a skirt or a dress or a strappy top. Literally the whole point of being alt is Doing Whatever The Hell You Want Forever. However, not everyone feels comfortable in that (I made this post because I'm transmasc and sometimes the long gothic dresses make me dysphoric), and not everyone is safe to do that ( as much as it sucks ass, if you live in a conservative area sometimes it can be genuinely dangerous for guys to wear makeup and dresses in public, and your safety should always come first), so I thought I'd lay out some tips on how to dress alt and masc from my own experience. I'm still learning so feel free to leave your own advice in the replies or reblogs! General Styling Tips: - Jackets. Jackets, jackets, jackets. Something about a big jacket always seems to give an outfit a more masc energy, and adding a cool jacket to an outfit can be a great way to elevate it and add some extra visual interest. I like black blazers, leather jackets, and black denim jackets in particular, but vests (formal menswear ones or more casual denim or leather ones) can work well too, especially in hot weather. - Any basic black pair of jeans will look 100x more alt if you loosely attach some chains to the pockets or belt loops. Also, pants with wider legs tend to look more masc than tighter fits. not sure why. Slacks can also be a really good and underrated option. - If you want to find good headwear, cool sunglasses have never failed me. You may be able to take some inspiration from Ouji fashion as well, but that's just my personal taste. - If you have a basic piece around, you can add pins, patches, safety pins, etc for a more casual look, or if you're going for something more formal, trims and lace details and embroidery can really add interest and elegance to it. (if you can't sew, you can order iron-on embroidered patches online or find them in craft stores that'll do the trick just fine.) This can take your pair of slacks or plain black blazer and turn it into a piece of formal gothic menswear you can make a staple of your wardrobe. - Find inspiration in your favorite goth artists. There's a lot of really cool goth music out there and a lot of those bands get really innovative with their looks! Figure out what you like about their style and try incorporating a few things in, it's fun! - If you have an alt wardrobe already but it just seems like something's missing or it could use some interest, try switching up the silhouettes or adding an extra layer! Seriously, don't be scared of playing with textures and sleeve shapes! I see a lot of dudes who just wear a band tee and a pair of jeans all the time, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, that can be a great look! But I think a lot of dudes just genuinely think that that's their only option and that everything else just "wasn't made for them" and that makes me a little sad. shred up some shirts and layer them, wear some bell sleeves, throw some extra safety pins or studs on, have fun! No one said masc fashion couldn't be fun. Unisex/Masc DIY Videos I Found:

Parts Of Men's Shirts
If you are thinking of getting tee shirt printing for a project you are deliberating, one of the options you may came up with would be to investigate your other options. This article will explain the options between doing it yourself and having a tee shirt printer make any custom printed t-shirts.
youtube
One with the great aspects of flannel shirts is the heat they provide when you wear them; and that is why people in cold climates often wear these t shirts. The traditional type is a plaid shirt that will have a pocket on each side in the leading. A associated with people the same as traditional style but doable ! also acquire a more modern and trendy version with this shirt a few time stores.
Why do many women now opt for wholesale cheap ladies' shirts? There are wide ranging advantages for buying such. As mentioned, main benefit would deal with financials. Others certainly save a lot by desiring to buy extensive. Buying in large quantities or perhaps in bulk would make you push down prices of each item by till 75%. Imagine how much savings practical, then focus generate. No cost so much on a solitary shirt a great deal more could buy and own many of them at a way lower benefit?
Many items adults and youth wear customized t-shirts; and this is another good thing about wearing t-shirts with company recognition for a front or back among the shirt. Often the company has its name with the front as well as the logo on his or her back, it just depends throughout the company as well as they to be able to advertise. In overall popularity of t-shirts is phenomenal in the united kingdom and various other parts on the planet as in fact. But many people claim that wearing t-shirts is comfortable as well and gratifying. All types of individuals in polo t shirt price in sri lanka society like them because they can have so tons of colours, including tie-dye.
The primary difference among a casual and an elegant shirt will be the fact that casual shirts contain a less stiff look and normally have brighter colors while formal wears are clean but duller different shades. There is also for an informal shirt being hidden inside the trouser while formal shirts need in. Top 10 African Inspired Fashion Trends – The Afropolitan Effect
Western fashion has often looked to African and African -American culture for inspiration but this time around the world seems to want an official romance with it. Here’s what you should know about when the affair started and how Afropolitans are changing the narrative.
Western designers have been flirting with African symbols, patterns and fibers since as far back as the 1970s when Yes Saint Laurent created a fashion collection that evoked images of an exotic Africa for non -African audiences.
With this understanding, let’s take a look at the top 10 African inspired fashion trends for women that have found their way to the retail fashion streets.
Using personal motifs like hair -do, music and food in bold and unusual ways is now the new cool.
Today, these colorful tie -dye prints are a must-have for women all over the world.
The trendy head wraps of today are sewn together as ready-made fashion accessories...
#7 - Wooden Jewellery
Jewellery made from utilitarian products like wood have their inspiration from African sculpting and carvings.

Michael Wilkinson is killin’ it. General thoughts and a few notes on costumes design so far. Episodes 1-5.
thus far, the costuming department seems to take some notes from Rogue One as its predecessor with utilitarian, lived in garments. For example, Jyn’s pants were designed, with vest sliders and webbing details, enough bulk to allow both Felicity, and her stunt double, room to wear knee pads. Along the same lines, Cassian’s initial look which is the costume that went on display as part of the promotional run for Andor, features a few note worthy motorcycle detailing in the knees, presumably for the same reason. Other similarities in costuming:
the breathing apparatus that both Maarva and Clem have on Kenari mirror the same one seen, as decoration, around Jyn’s neck in the Eadu scenes. (Prior to her climbing the platform.) Practically speaking, as a prop, it is the same breathing mask and tube, dyed the same color.
fingerless gloves on the ladies
Cassian’s color palette is very similar.
Kyber crystals. Although, from my recollection, Jyn’s is a piece of acrylic where it seems that the crystals used on Andor are genuine. Which I do appreciate as as much as I love both the design and meaning to Jyn’s crystals it often looks visually flat. The Sky Kyber catches light much prettier. I’m not particularly knowledgeable of crystals, only vaguely aware of some from my stint in jewelry craftsmanship, so this is all spoken with a grain of salt. On my third watch, the one that Maarva has in the ship looks more like a man made Citrine which is heat-treated Amethyst, which is an Amethyst that is mined in Bolivia.
The overall color palette on Ferrix is yellow, specifically a mustard sort of yellow. I can’t help but wonder if this is to note that at least in our world, a natural yellow dye is easy to obtain. It can be obtained from a variety of sources including onion skins, tumeric, cold tea and rhubarb. I can’t help but imagine some sort of community dye job to make all the various guild costumes thus the sense of cohesion in all the colors. And that would function so very well as it would be too expensive for anyone to be able to afford anything body the very limited color palette.
I love Bix’s base costume. It’s an integrated mix of athletic and performance fabrics that would wick sweat, and be comfortable to do her highly mobile job. The accented quilted inserts add shaping to her vest. Although, I find it strange in terms of function to have fingerless gloves while working on something heavy as she is. It is very much a design decision versus functionality and I am okay with it. (Again, not the first time there have been fingerless gloves recently.)
The colors are echoed over back in the Kenari flashbacks. All of the garments look as if they are uniforms from the adult figures that have been refitted smaller youth frames.
There are so many space hoodies in this show.
one on Ferrix.
Tamryn’s rough wool and or slub looking pull over.
Nemik’s.
The Aldhani Shepard “disguise”costumes as seen on our rebel cell are stunning. I also really like the base layers underneath all the sherpa, they look very coherent in terms of the color palette, fabric choices overall look. Lots of knits and textured fabrics to provide visual interest and warmth. Additionally, fingerless gloves again. Cassian’s shirt that he picks up here and wears in episodes 4-5 is lovely. I love the black piping accents, the cross over front and tie on design at the right side. It looks to be a denim chambray fabric
Vel’s windbreaker looks like the base design is a gorka, as seen with the welted pockets, elasticated wrists. Presumably with the fabric base as well using something like a Gore-tex fabric. To me, it reads as another R1 nod, as a gorka is one of the options worn by the Pathfinders on Scarif. It’s also just a little gay to be wearing more army/military look. It’s one of the other pieces on Vel that gave off the initial lesbian five on episode 4 for me. Additionally, more than the blanket is shared, Vel and Cinta even share the poncho.
