2018 Art Summary!

I've never done one of these before because usually, I don't even have to look to know I'll have several months left blank, as I have a bad habit of finishing things and either just waiting to post them or uploading things in bulk. This time though, I felt more confident about having a piece for every month...Turns out somehow I lost February in terms of art-making . Oh well, 11/12 ain't bad. (And I'm very positive I drew something in February, but evidently, I didn't think to post it. Which is weird because February usually isn't that busy for me ) Also, I think I'm a few days late to the party on these, but whatever. And now for a short description and links to each artwork so you can understand & see them better. January: Coraline One of my earlier attempts at just straight fan-art from one of my favorite movies. I'm still really happy with how it turned out, almost a year later February: Surprisingly, nothing! (Seriously, I have no idea what happened to February...) March: Killjoys, Make Some Noise! The first piece of My Chemical Romance fan-art I ever made.  Poor me and poor them, they look a wee bit feminine, but I'm working on getting better at that. Maybe this year I'll take the time to color the line art to honor the anniversary again--we'll see! (I put this one in sideways because I couldn't size/crop it to fit the other way to my own satisfaction) April: Ivy Enchantix 2018! You know, I would've thought if there was any month I had no art posts, it would've been April. There was Spring Break and Easter, school stuff including taking a trip to New York...And yet it seems April was actually one of my busier months, considering what all I had to pick from. But it was really no contest of which one to pick as my favorite. While I definitely only rarely make Winx art anymore, when I do there's a lot of heart and soul poured into every piece, to the point there isn't much I can find fault with. This may not have been the "grand return" I was hoping for, but it stands as a reminder that I'm not ready to fully let Winx Club go anytime soon. May: Watercolor Stars The tail end of May 2018 marked a big milestone I almost never thought I'd see; My first display drawing tablet, a Wacom Cintiq that I stalked eBay for months (possibly even years) to finally get my hands on. This was also the first time I actively revisited my Mini Magnet Challenge from the year prior, using one of my favorite poems as inspiration for the first piece of art made with the tablet. Looking back on it now, I really am in love with the overall atmosphere. June: The Sandman This month proved to be a busy one, and I have to say honorable mentions go to my Art Style Challenge and The World is Ugly, the second piece of MCR fan-art I made. But ultimately I went with this one because I'm still obsessed with Mr. Sandman's unique character design and for as simple and quick as the image was, it's honestly one of my most favorite pieces I think I've ever made. (I even have it posted as a Portfolio piece on my website). The other two are great and easily tied for close seconds, but they don't haunt me the same way this one does. July: One Little Spark Early July was time for my family's annual theme-park vacation, specifically to Walt Disney World.  After we got back, I had that feeling I usually do about being just so inspired by everything we saw and did, but not really knowing what to do with it. Every year I want to do a small series for every day we're at the parks, but I never have the time or means to do so. So an obscure crossover of Figment from Journey Into Imagination at Epcot and Animal Crossing: New Leaf was my compromise for 2018.  I still think it's adorable and though it is ridiculously unlikely, I have to say I would absolutely love to see Figment appear in an Animal Crossing game someday now. August: Grav3yardGirl Once again, August had a few different options but ended up being a no-contest. This is the first piece of fan-art I ever made of my favorite Youtuber, Grav3yardGirl , made and posted at basically the last minute for her birthday on August 3rd.  I'm not sure she ever saw it or knows it exists, but there's always next year! I do still think it turned out really cute for how much of a rush I was in to complete it. Also, someone needs to remind me to use that parchment paper in my artwork more often... September: Marco Renoir Colored Pencil Test This month was relatively calm with only a few art pieces to choose from. I went with my test piece for the Marco Renoir pencils because I do still really love how it looks and also because it sort of marked the beginning of my hunt for colored pencils and would eventually lead me to pick up a few other specific brands. Plus doing all these test pieces ends up boosting my colored pencil skills overall.  This also marked the beginning of me using galaxy/sky pictures to test colored pencils, which has proven pretty effective, I think. October: Outfit of The Day This was my busiest October art-wise in a while, I think. For once I wasn't competing with art/theatre classes that demanded a ton of my extra attention, and this was also the first time I was super committed to seeing Inktober through to the end. And admittedly my Inktober 2018: Wrap Up! picture was very close to getting this spot, but I ultimately decided against it since I would be really hard to tell what it actually is and that seemed like cheating since I'm not sure I could pick a favorite Inktober piece anyway . So I went with my first-ever Outfit-Of-the-Day drawing instead. I am still really thrilled with it and it was one my first real holiday-specific pieces I made also. I was also rushing to get this one done, and I still think it came out really good, all things considered. November: Why, Curious Butterflies! This one was honestly the hardest to pick because this was easily the busiest November I think I have ever had art-wise. For at least four years prior I always had a ton of theatre stuff to do, but not in 2018. (Don't get me wrong, I really miss that class but it was definitely a big commitment). In the end, I went with the picture that makes me the happiest; this little fan-art inspired by a purse I had just gotten IRL. It's cute and its mixed-media, which I am increasingly convinced is where my artistic talent really shines brightest. December: The Nutcracker Oddly enough, this feels like the sparsest December I've had for art in a while because I think before Winter Break was like my main comeback after months of having to put stuff off. I may not have made that many art pieces this December, but the ones I did were pretty elaborate/in-depth for me. I went with my Nutcracker girl since it's a concept I've been wanting to play with for a while now, and once again this was a mixed media piece that I think really showcases my skills. And it's also one of the first real like Christmas-y drawings I've made. I also spent a good chunk of this month acquiring new art supplies to play with . All in all, I look back and I'm pretty happy with what I've accomplished art-wise is 2018. It was a year of experimenting and milestones, and I think I'm in a much better place as an artist now than I was a year ago. Lord knows my journey is not over yet, but I like where I am so far. A walk to the mailbox was cold and uneventful.

It’s 30 degrees, overcast with high clouds. Feels much colder than it did last two nights, which were two degrees colder on the thermometer, but slightly less burning cold at the hands and face.

The neighborhood is quiet, but it’s late, I have not been outside in daylight hours for more than about two hours combined all this year, is far too dangerous for that.

There was one piece of mail in the mailbox, from Bank of America, was ��Face Down“ in the box and that was noted as a message. One other notable thing this past few days is about the forced air conditioning/heater thermostat. I got roped into replacing the analog bi-metal thermostat, and swapping that good one out for a digital terror equipped model many years ago, since then, the terror bastards are able to activate the fan for the HVAC remotely so that the fan is always running, the system will not shut off, does not cycle the way it is supposed to, and I have to manually reset the system in order to shut off the fan, witch is turned on remotely for it’s ability to create a negative air pressure inside the house, as is needed, when the terror bastards are ready to introduce the poison gasses into my home for priming me with nitrous prior to the physical attack. Happened last night in the kitchen, I don’t want to talk about it, it does not help to say that I killed the son of bitch, or don’t say that I killed the son of bitch terror bastards when they poison me and then come in with the keys that the sheriff hands out to terror bastards. The remote control that is used to control the heating system is not a remote that came with the thermostat, there is no indication that the digital thermostat is remote control capable, it’s hidden terror technology, and is also inside of your thermostat if you were convinced to put the digital kind, rather than the safe ones that are bi-metal thermostat tech.

How sailing is helping the Caribbean after Hurricane Irma

Irma struck in September 2017 and was one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic basin with maximum wind speeds of 185 mph. It killed five people in the BVI while a further 39 lost their lives in other nations throughout the Caribbean. Hurricane Maria followed shortly after, devastating Dominica, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Although Petz was in the US during Irma, she faced an agonizing wait to hear from her husband who remained at their property on the island of Tortola. Communications were knocked out by the storm meaning it was almost two days before she knew he had survived.

Yet when Petz made it back to Tortola, a place she describes as “one of the most beautiful” on earth, she knew she had to help the battered islands return to some kind of normality as quickly as possible.

‘Miracle regatta’

She committed to putting on the regatta to show that life continued on the BVI, not to mention attract visitors and offer a welcome fillip to the hard-hit tourism sector. With no power and significant damage to the host marina, however, such ambitions seemed unrealistic.

Yet in the space of six months, Petz and her team were able to attract 70 yachts and their crews some from as far afield as the UK and France. That feat was all the more remarkable considering much of the work was done on computers powered by solar batteries and the venue was prepared from near scratch.

“I keep telling people it was the miracle regatta because it happened over Easter,” she says.

“It was really significant, at least to me to say, ‘you know what, we will go on.’ The sailing industry has a foundation here that even a category five hurricane can’t destroy completely,” Petz adds.

‘Spirit and resilience’

Sailing is a big draw for countries throughout the Caribbean, with visitors attracted by warm trade winds, dazzling seas, stunning beaches and local color and hospitality.

A number of prestigious racing regattas from January through to May — which for some kick off the international racing season — draw big numbers of boats from the region and abroad, with crews made up of amateurs and professional sailors, with a healthy sprinkling of super-rich owners.

According to the BVI government, the “bulk” of its tourism income is generated by the yacht chartering industry. Then there’s the input to the local marine trade and associated businesses.

Sharon Flax-Brutus, director of tourism for the BVI Tourist Board, says the sailing sector was one of the first to bounce back in the aftermath of Irma.

While land-based services and accommodation were out of commission, charter companies brought in vessels from elsewhere to replace those destroyed in the storm.

This ensured tourists could still explore the picturesque waters around the BVI, while pop-up beach bars and parties were set up for travelers to enjoy.

Flax-Brutus was in the BVI when Irma hit. She describes sheltering in her house, which lost its roof, as the eye of the hurricane passed overhead. “I have been through hurricanes before but I’d never seen one like that,” she says.

Storm damage remains in the BVI. A recent Caribbean Tourist Organization (CTO) report cited by the industry publication Travel Weekly found tourism was down by 42.5% in in 2018.

Former BVI premier Daniel Orlando Smith also confirmed, while he was still in post late last year, that Irma caused $2.5 billion worth of damage and that it would be the end of 2019 at least before the territory’s hotel room inventory would be “near normalcy.”

Yet Flax-Brutus says high-profile events like the Spring Regatta have been important in sending out the signal to the wider world that “the BVI and sailing are resilient.”

‘Stimulated morale’

The recovery has also led to creativity. Flax-Brutus says the BVI now has a burgeoning street food scene. With some luxury hotels out of commission “we have all of these four and five star chefs (looking) for another opportunity,” Flax-Brutus says.

“There’s one guy whose restaurant has been destroyed but you can go to his tent in town and have lobster ravioli (and) seafood chowder,” she says.

Other celebrated Caribbean regattas such as those in Saint Barthélemy, St. Thomas, Barbados, Grenada and Antigua have sought to promote a similar message.

Peter S. Craig, event manager at the St. Barths Bucket Regatta, told CNN via questions answered by email how the annual superyacht fixture helped buy and transport vital supplies for the island (also known as St. Barts) in the aftermath of Irma.

The regatta itself, meanwhile, “let the people of St. Barths know that we had confidence in them and were willing to put on the event regardless of where the recovery stood or how many yachts entered,” Craig says. This year, regatta entry fees went to a collective of non-profit organizations helping the island’s recovery.

Michele Korteweg, general manager of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta strikes a similar tone. She says their 2018 event enticed a “huge influx of people to the island which stimulated not only the economy, but also the overall morale.”

The regatta “brought people together to celebrate all that had been achieved in such short time. Together with visitors and sailors from around the world made it a very special occasion,” she adds.

Organizers of Antigua Sailing Week — one of the oldest and largest events in the Caribbean — told CNN last year that they expected their 2018 regatta to bring in about $4 million of direct revenue to the island.

About 40 per cent of boats are chartered by visitors for the week, 30 per cent are sailed across the Atlantic from Europe or down from the US, and 30 per cent are owned by Caribbean sailors, commercial director Alison Sly-Adams told CNN in 2018.

The bulk of crews come from the UK, Germany, the US and the wider Caribbean region. “Yes, we have super rich yacht owners but there is a really good mix,” said Sly-Adams.

Sailing Week (April 27-May 3), which was established in 1968, comes at the end of a season which begins with the Antigua Charter Yacht Show in December, a superyacht regatta in January, the Caribbean 600 race in February and a classic yacht event in April.

Charles Fernandez, minister of tourism and economic development, in Antigua and Barbuda told CNN last year the income was “vital” to the region, and aids fund-raising efforts to rebuild nearby Barbuda, which was in the eye of the storm and 95% flattened by Irma.

‘We will have power’

Twelve months on from the pivotal 2018 BVI Spring Regatta, Petz is hoping for a bigger and better event.

The regatta runs from March 25-31 with abound 90 yachts expected to take part.

“We will have power,” Petz jokes when describing how 2019 will be far easier than the challenge faced 12 months ago.

Promoting “sustainability” and using “materials that were damaged during the hurricane” will also be a key aim, she adds.

“The island has recovered quite substantially,” Petz says. “If you came right now and drove through you’d see buildings that don’t have roofs, vacant houses. It would be almost like ‘oh are they building that place?’ It doesn’t look like … it was a hurricane that destroyed it.”

Still, emphasizing the indefatigability of the BVI is the main message she wants to convey.

“We want people to come back. I don’t want people to be afraid that things aren’t going to be everything they expect. They should come. It’s always an adventure.

“Sailing is always a fun, beautiful thing to do. And that part of the world here is just as beautiful as it’s ever been.”
