Language Learning Review for October
italki
My Bulgarian tied in nicely with the italki Language Challenge in October. I set myself a goal of 20 hours, which I reached! Woohoo!
I had mostly daily lessons Monday to Friday, sometimes twice or three times a day (30 minutes a lot of the time!).
Teach Yourself Bulgarian
My goal with this book was a chapter a day. I did this and finished the book. Woop!
I have to admit though, I did get more lenient towards the end of the book. After all, I don’t necessarily need all the detailed, advanced stuff they were teaching in later chapters just yet.
Memrise
I did alright with Memrise and it definitely proved a useful addition!
Something I’ve done recently is put Memrise in the front screen of the app box on my phone with Instagram and WhatsApp. So I’m tempted to see Memrise as “attractive” as Instagram. Haha! It does seem to be working and I’ve done more than I think I would have if it were just on the main page.
Peace Corps, FSI, DLI Audio
My goal with this audio was to listen as much as possible. I did this for a few weeks but then began to need some more stimulating audio whilst working after a while if I’m honest!
Plus, I didn’t want to make Bulgarian a chore or a bore so I let myself listen to podcasts or music when I wanted to.
BulgarianPod101
I didn’t use this resource as much as expected, which is fine as I was generally busy with others like the main Teach Yourself book.

hi there, I'm just wondering if you know of any good resources for learning Bulgarian?? Thanks :D
See, that’s the thing! All of the people who have actually tried studying Bulgarian tell me that Bulgarian textbooks aren’t that great. That’s a shame because even if someone is semewhat interested in learning my beautiful language, they’re discouraged by the fact that there aren’t that many resources out there, let alone good and reliable ones. I searched a bit and found a couple of things I hope someone will find useful.A website I find quite useful is Bulgarian 101. There is a pretty decent amount of material, alongside with Bulgarian Radio, Flashcards, Newspapers.. What I particularly like about it is there is lots of audio, which, despite not being top quality, will definitely help you immerse yourself a bit more!
Grammar and reference books/sites:
A Concise Bulgarian GrammarShort Bulgarian phrasebookA (pretty) reliable online English-Bulgarian dictionaryBasic Bulgarian courseLearn the Bulgarian alphabetBulgarian for beginnersLearn 101 basic course for BulgarianMost commonly used vocab, phrases and grammarBulgarian grammar drills
Reading/ Listening materials:
100 Bulgarian newspapers and news mediaSurvival phrases in Bulgarian (iTunes)Bulgarianpod101.comListen to some Bulgarian music here.
A couple of textbooks I have heard good things about are Intensive Bulgarian, Colloquial Bulgarian, learn Bulgarian through dialogues with this book.
Other books I found on amazon:
Complete BulgarianLearn Bulgarian the easy wayConversational BulgarianTeach yourself Bulgarian
You could aslo check out this list of Bulgarian books you can buy online.I know these aren’t the best and aren’t a lot but they’re a start! Another brilliant resource are friendly native speakers. I am always open to answering questions about Bulgarian and helping with it - just send me an ask or a message. ^^

Basic Conversation Part 2
Kinda going out of order here xD. Today I want to teach you simple things like Do you speak English/Bulgarian?
Говориш/Говорите ли Български/Английски? - Do you (informal/formal) speak (Bulgarian/English)? - Govorish/govorite li b’uh’lgarski/angliyski?
Да-Da-yes
Не-Ne-no
От къде си/сте? - Оt kuhde si/ste - Where are you(f./inf.) from?
От Англия/Америка/Австралия съм, а вие/ти? - I am from England/America/Australia, and you (formal/informal)
That’s it for this lesson, please leave some feedback. If you need help pronouncing it I would recommend. https://www.youtube.com/user/BulgarianPod101
I used “uh” for the ъ sound. Also make sure to practice reading in cyrillic, if you haven’t already check out my alphabet post.
