i've been through a lot of phases in the time since i first made this spotify account and i think you can tell from my liked songs. i will add some commentary mostly for my amusement but also to explain myself because there is a minor amount of explaining to do

"sober up" - ajr (i haven't listened to this in. so long. it's novel to hear it again! that being said i don't remember why i liked this!)

"vampire money" - my chemical romance (this song is a girlfriend to me.)

"two birds" - regina spektor (ACK. my sadgirl era is catching up to me)

"cold cold man" - saint motel (in march of 2023 i randomly became utterly obsessed with saint motel and i wound up in their top 0.05% of listeners on spotify. those four dudes sure can make noises. ironically i don't care much for this song or the ep it's from, compared to the rest of their stuff. i REALLY like their album voyeur tho. and forplay)

"genocidal humanoidz" - system of a down (this is more representative of what i've started regularly listening to. and by that i mean exclusively soad)

"time to pretend" - mgmt (our confusing finish! but at least you're not the one who went through this musical whiplash. i got into mgmt mainly because my mom would play it in the car when i was a kid and my brain permanently latched onto it. same reason that i listen to muse. and of monsters and men. and the black keys. and cage the elephant... and cake... and joywave... and robert delong... and foster the people... and depeche mode... and modest mouse... and the cure... and the smiths... and death cab for cutie... and i'm realizing that at least 60% of my music taste is "that thing i heard in the car when i was nine")

Hello hope you don't mind me butting in. You're free to not answer this publicly if you don't want to bring more attention to the vent post but I relate man. When I first got into the stranger things fandom on Tumblr I quickly realised the main tag and the character tags are like. very hard to navigate (either because of the untagged reader fics or -for smaller characters- because they're tagged in Every post they feature in, and they're generally not at all the focus of it). and i do think the solution is following blogs that make what you like seeing and silently blocking blogs that dont. just blacklisting is never enough apparently.

also, sometimes i see posts tagged x reader that only feature the character? is that a convention or something? i saw it in other fandoms before but i never got it. or like. ships randomly tagged in fanart or edits of only one character, with no relation to the ship at all. perhaps ops way of finding their audience? it confuses me greatly though.

I don't mind the attention, I started the whole rant lmao. I could go full on evil and tag this post with "eddie munson x reader" but I have a bang draft to finish instead of dealing with the inevitable backlash.

Yeah I rarely go into the Eddie Munson tag myself, it's an uncharted forest of incredibly detailed girly thirst, which I'm not judging, just not particularly interested in seeing it lol. The post that got through my carefully constructed blocking systems was on my dash, I do have moots who are into "x reader", I love them and I don't wanna unfollow them, so the next best solution is blocking OPs they reblog who don't bother tagging, which is what I've decided to do.

And yeah, you're right, that's another thing. Overtagging with "x reader" probably to get more attention from people who follow the tags. I sometimes get a little culture shock when I see exclusively Steddie blogs I follow reblog things that get filtered for me, and then I open that and realize it has nothing to do with "x reader", it's just a fanart of Eddie or Steve. Ughhhh why, people. Why.

this is just straight up a list of shit that colum does in the foreverlands because he is batshit nutstown insane. none of this is exaggerated. @bulbbeer

he is so desperate for money that he tries to charge a 13-year-old asking him to help find a person until he learns that the person is the kid's abducted older sister. he then declines to help with that situation but offers to braid the kid's hair because it looks like a disaster. the kid agrees. then colum tries to charge him again

even when he is being actively mind controlled into wanting to do something (terrorism) he is still so halfhearted about it that he gives up and the person mind controlling him is fucking baffled

there is an arc where he shows up once with no warning, breaks two people out of prison, and then completely vanishes again

one of his friends strangles him with his own scarf and then they just keep being friends

he's offered money to help investigate someone who'll be attending a party and when he arrives at the party he investigates for two minutes and spends the rest of his time there chugging poison and stripping for money

he bit a chunk out of a man's arm when he was nine

he spends an entire night outside in a rainstorm digging up his friend's grave with his bare hands just to check if there's even a body (there isn't, she's alive, and he's seen her alive)

he gets captured by an assassin on purpose so he can infiltrate the assassin's guild but he nearly ruins his plan the moment he's cuffed by being so fucking annoying that she nearly kills him on the spot—this is the first useful thing he does

he goes through all the trouble of contacting his friends from captivity by undoing part of the stitching of a jacket he always wears, slipping a note into the fabric, sewing it back up, planting the idea of impersonating him in the head of the assassin that captured him, letting her take his jacket as part of the disguise, banking on the likelihood that she'll get caught/captured due to her inability to reproduce how fucking annoying he is, and banking on the likelihood of his one friend noticing the inconsistent stitches in the jacket and undoing them to check, only for the note he planted there to be almost totally worthless. it is a full page but it boils down to "i'm doing something absurdly dangerous but dude trust me" alongside a doodle of a frog

he escapes the assassin's guild multiple times by biting off the shackles

his ex-girlfriend whom he dated for a singular week a year before the story tries to kill him with a hammer in a blind rage, and he almost lets her, and not only does he not at all hold this against her, he then goes on to give her a free haircut a few hours later

he agrees to assassinate god so he can impress his crush

he gives himself SEVERAL lobotomies because the previous lobotomies keep making him forget that the lobotomies aren't actually solving any of his problems

while everyone else is horrified to encounter a pool of condensed, usable magic bile forcefully extracted from hundreds of dragons, colum calls it "dragon syrup" and then laughs until he's crying on the ground while everyone else just kind of watches

he has an actual full breakdown after being told "you look just like your mother"

he dies. then he gets better. the first part was in his plan. the second was not

@bulbbeer i started brainrotting about a specific oc dynamic and i needed to put these words in someone's face. because i think these two are very funny

so in some tags just a little bit ago i described them thusly

and honestly i could leave it there but i have to keep going

Character 1 - Evander Valjean. Usually putting on airs in an attempt to appear intimidating and "above it all" to cover up for the fact that he is genuinely a sensitive, artistic, and compassionate person. His family has a lengthy generational feud with Thistle (assassin's guild), and this feud was settled by forcing the Valjean family to give away one child from each generation to Thistle to be trained as an assassin. Evander didn't want any of his siblings to be given away, so he left his family at the age of 16 and turned himself over to the guild. He's been an assassin for four years.

Character 2 - Xylem Renfield. Overtly a messy bitch but usually comes across in a sort of quirky nerd loser way. Like, at first glance, he is more of an "oops haha i'm so silly :P" but in reality there's something deeply wrong with him. He's very good at being completely overlooked, forgotten, and underestimated, and he leverages this to let people think they have power over him so he can have the satisfaction of proving them wrong. He had to run to Thistle for sanctuary at the age of 13 after killing his father. He's been an assassin for a full decade.

They have several fundamental and superficial similarities. They're both poetic, passionate, and sensitive. They're both voracious readers and writers. They're both imaginative and disorganized. They both feel sad, stifled, and tired. They both work to inflate certain qualities of their character (superior vs incompetent) to make a certain impression (invulnerable vs powerless) out of self-protection. And while they both "chose" to join Thistle, neither of them want to be there.

When Evan first joined, Xylem was one of the first people he met. And they basically hated each other on sight. Their first conversation turned into an argument in three sentences. They only started liking each other after two years, when they inadvertently impressed each other with their moral character. And they very quickly slid into the world's strangest brand of Some Faggot Shit, with such dialogue exchanges as

X [while facedown on the floor]: "I'm going to try to kill myself again in a little bit. If I fail, you have to make out with me again." E: "That was a one-time thing, just to get the poison out of your mouth." X: "And you thought your tongue would work better than your fingers?" E: "My tongue was closer."

They don't actually date each other. Not explicitly, at least, and not for a very long time at that. A romantic relationship is heavily implied, but only several years after the main story ends.

Anyway, in arc 10, Evan manages to escape Thistle, but he can't take Xylem with him. Or, well, he maybe could've, but it wouldn't have worked out very well, especially since Xylem did have one very important thing that kept him tied to the guild (someone else in it that he wanted to protect).

Despite all of their wonderful conversations, one of their most romantically charged moments happens in arc 11, when Xylem has just been run through with a rapier and then stabbed about five or six more times. The other characters realized that performing first aid within the Thistle stronghold was not going to work out well, and while they're on their way trying to get him out, who would they encounter but Evan, who arrived with the hope of finding Xylem and getting him out of Thistle.

I mean. Evan got what he came there for, granted with a lot more blood than he expected. And so, their romance truly blossomed, as Evan very desperately and tearfully attempted to help with the half-dozen stab wounds and Xylem was, for some reason, trying to talk to him about a completely unrelated book he read recently, while the actual healer keeps telling them both to please shut the fuck up, and neither of them listen.
