On the Long Flight to Budapest

They were on the way to Budapest.
Otabek was competing at the Budapest Trophy this weekend in Hungary. Yuri had no idea why his federation had decided to send him there as opposed to the Kazakhstan Classic this past weekend. Oh, well, there wasn’t much that could be done about it. He only wanted Otabek to win everything he damn well could since Yuri was out for the foreseeable future. (And there was nothing he could do about that, either.)
Yuri made his way through the plane to their seat, which was way too far back for his liking. At least one plus, he thought to himself, was that it was easy for people to get out of your way when you were 185 cm tall in Japan. It wasn’t uncommon, but it wasn’t that common, either. Yuri put his bags up in the nearest bin, shoving them in there a bit before sitting down in his seat. God, in the middle, too? Why?!
At least he was sitting with Otabek. Not sitting with his husband was NOT an option. He waited for Otabek to sit down before looking at it. “Seriously? Economy?” He knew he was whining a bit, but come on! “You know I have long legs. Why are we here?”
The flight from Saga to Haneda was short, not even 2 hours. The flight from Haneda to Frankfurt, though, was over 14 hours before the short hop from Frankfurt to Budapest. It would suck if they were stuck in economy for that flight. He’d survive, of course, just cramped for the entire flight. Ugh. Please let this be some joke.

It survived another trip.
At this point, I think I should name it.

Yuri settled his pillow behind his head and put the blanket over his legs as he got comfortable for the long flight ahead. Long flights were one of the downfalls of their career. He felt like a heel when Otabek explained why he liked the older phones, other than just that they worked. “That’s true,” he said. “It’s a very good point.” His Nokia would likely survive just about anything. It seemed almost indestructible. “I shouldn’t have made such a big deal out of it.”
Yuri gave a sigh. Dinner would be served soon enough, and then he would drift off to sleep after until sometime in the morning before breakfast was served. “I never really considered that, either, how breakable they are,” he said after a moment’s pause. He upgraded every year or two, as he always enjoyed the newer models, and they had some good ones in Japan, too.

Yuri crossed his legs as suggested and found Otabek was right. It was still a bit close – and he would doing this during the long flight from Haneda to Frankfurt – but it was better. He was still pouting and still annoyed. It was slightly better, though. At least it was something he could deal with, at least for now. He’d probably need to stretch a bit later, though.
Yuri waited to respond until they were in the air and the noise of the ascent had died down a little bit. “Yes, learning,” he responded. “There are learning apps and stuff on there, brain training, apps with different courses on them, reading apps, stuff like that.” He got his phone out, scrolling through something he could do during this short flight.

Settling back, carefully adjusting the buckled belt, Otabek kept his eyes off Yuri. "When I get my phones back, you get your business class." Three days. It had been three days since Yuri decided to take matters into his own claws. Stealing the 'hideous brick and the teal menace' from their resting place, he'd then logged into some program or another setting up social after social; updating, editing, and generally insisting on his way. At first it was fine. If Yuri wanted to run socials for him, so much the better. Otabek was hard pressed to find time for such things. Yuri was better at it anyway. But then he'd refused to give him back the Nokia or the Sidekick, insisting it was time for an upgrade. It was an old argument. For Yuri, the latest, the best was everything. Phones from the turn of the century were decidedly not it. To Otabek, if it worked, why replace it? He only needed to make calls on it, and they even sent texts. Although at the moment, a text would be better than the death glare he was receiving.

That almost got a twitch of a smile out of Otabek. Yuri was probably the soul consumer test subject for phone case durability. "I'd rather invest in something less expendable. Tablets and laptops have a longer life than most phones." His eyes rest on the blond. "Besides, their most appealing option is video calling. I get better images with the computer." With the image of late night conversations countries apart now lingering in the air, Otabek moved a lock of Yuri's hair off his face, fingers lingering for a moment, before he turned back to the screen inserted into the chair in front of him, wondering if they would play an inflight movie, or if he could listen to some original artists with the head set.

He wasn't stupid. He knew you could learn on those things. Getting Yuri to admit he was passing up opportunities tho, that took work. Turning his eyes forward, he made note to use the layover for a few particular activities, then drew in a deep breath before he began to meditate until the announcement of eminent landing rolled thrugh the PA system. Rising, Otabek moved quickly to the side, letting the cramped blond out before he became a permanent pretzel. Once he was safely with Yuuri, he looked for the flight desk. A short conversation later, he returned, casually holding paper in his hand as they waited for the luggage transfer before they were allowed to board. When it came time, he handed over the upgraded seat passes. He got his apology.

Yuri smiled at Otabek. “That is true,” he admitted, “and tablets can be cheaper, too.” As for laptops, well… that depended upon what kind of laptop you got. Yuri’s gaming laptops were definitely expensive. “I appreciate the better quality on laptops, too.” Though it was far less common now, they had spent many nights once upon a time talking through a screen. They didn’t need to anymore, of course, especially since Yuri was not competing.
Yuri reached into his bag and got out his headphones. He had his own, of course, so he didn’t need to borrow the ones that the plane would inevitably give out. He immediately went through, searching the screen in front of him for a good movie to watch until he got sleepy while dinner was being served.

Otabek watched from the side as Yuri began to drift, lips twitching into a faint smile. When he inevitably fell asleep, he tucked the blond in just that little bit more, then took a deep breath, running thrugh his program again and again until it rested behind his eyes like a burned in image. He didn't know how many more years he had of this, but whatever it was? He was going to make the most of it.

Yuri had been stretching out his cramped legs as soon as they’d gotten to their new gate, having to move from the domestic gates to the international ones. They’d found a spot where there weren’t too many people at the moment, off to the side a bit, but where they could still see the announcements and see the front of the gate. He needed to stretch out a bit and didn’t want to purposefully piss anyone off.
He’d noticed Otabek walk off. He didn’t give it much thought – he knew he wouldn’t go far without letting him and Yuuri know where he was going. (Yuuri decidedly stayed out of everything and was buried in his phone, presumably texting Viktor.) Yuri was pleasantly surprised when Otabek returned after a few minutes with boarding passes in his hands. He stopped what he was doing and took them, seeing that Otabek had upgraded them, back to where Yuri preferred.
“You upgraded us?” A smile broke out across his face. “Thank you!” He wrapped his arms around him and kissed him quickly before dislodging himself. Had he just been waiting for him to apologize? He had obviously booked it all economy. “I was not looking forward to sitting in a cramped seat for fourteen hours.”
