Born in Canada to visual artist parents Julia Davis has been making art her whole life but always thought she'd be an actor. Now based in Oakland and working as Bud Snow—a more distinctive name adopted from her colorful late-great uncle—she is an accomplished bookmaker, muralist, installation artist and photographer. In 2018 as her best friend Laura Nicole Kelly ( @aquarian_ayurveda )—a massage therapist and Ayurvedic healer in Sonoma County—was fighting a losing battle with cancer Snow decided to paint this tribute and talked with Kelly about imagery that was meaningful to her. After two weeks hanging in the air the result was this 62-foot wall on First St behind Santa Rosa’s Roxy Theater.  @bud_snow/

The old Harding Theater recedes into the block on Divisadero at Hayes in San Francisco. But there is nothing quiet about this theater that was renovated last year and opened a year ago by Emporium SF as an arcade bar venue. This place is packed with table games, pinball, video games, live DJs, big screen and plenty of art by a dozen local artists. Bud Snow

I believe in momentum. I know that when I reach for a feeling…or an idea arrives… that momentum will build and carry it if I put some attention there. As if some cosmic material is right there, backing it up... This is the art of being alive. This is the art of creating. When someone tells me they’re not creative, I say, look in the mirror. Look at your relationships. Look at your career. Does it match what you’ve been thinking about? You created all of that.

Growing up in Vancouver, BC, with a painter mother, Bud’s upbringing was filled with acting, photography, drawing, and a host of other creative pastimes, and pretending to have all kinds of careers. Now living in Oakland, California, where he painted this piece on 10th Street in Chinatown, he describes his style as “Intuitive painting, photography, and installation as direct response to the ample ironies and absurdities of living.” @bud_snow
