5 reasons why Thailand makes an excellent first budget backpacking trip?
1. There are so many backpackers that you will never feel alone. You can simply ask any traveler and receive so many suggestions and tips as to what to do, where to go, and how to get there. Also, you will make friends in no time, if you so choose!
2. So MANY hostels. There are such a wide array of hostels and one will rarely face the problem of not having accommodation.
3. The hostels are beyond helpful. A lot of hostels will have restaurants and bars in them. It’s common for the hostel to book tours and buses for you and offer laundry services as well. Most reception workers speak English.
4. Transportation is super easy. One can book a train, taxi, bus, and plane fairly last minute and it still be reasonably priced. There are many travel planners and one can book online as well.
5. Prices in general are just plain cheap, so if you are on a budget, then this is the place for you!

6/18/17 Travel day Florence, Italy 🔜 Palma, Mallorca
If any of you know me (Allison), you know how detail oriented I am. This is particularly true with traveling. We have had all of the transportation details worked out/written down/paid for….for MONTHS.
The only open hole we had was our way back to Rome Ciampino airport. It is the smaller Ryanair specific airport with no clear online directions as to how to get to town (besides taxis for €30). Being tired and ready to get to our Airbnb on the way in, we went ahead and got a taxi. We realized that there HAD to be another way that was much more friendly to our budget.
Before heading back through, we researched again. This is the way we went today. It cost €5.40 TOTAL – Keep reading for deets:
From Roma Termini train station, we bought a ticket to Ciampino. NOT Ciampino airport…because there is no train station at Ciampino airport. This is where we were confused before. After taking this train (about 15 minutes), we got onto a shuttle bus for the airport right outside of the station. These don’t come very often, but we hit it at the right time! This took an additional 5ish minutes but dropped us off right in front of the departure area.
This was FASTER than taking a taxi through traffic. If you were taking this FROM the airport, you would still need to figure out which Metro (subway… A or B) to take from Termini to get to your lodging(+€1.50).
We’ve read many confused backpackers asking about this topic online and we think this is the easiest, time saving and cheapest way to get to and from Ciampino Airport. 🛫

Zapatilla Island
It’s sad when you have to remind yourself you are literally in paradise and you should be happy. Laying on a white sand beach and floating amongst clear water, I was thinking to myself that this is what people dream about, yet here I am only semi enjoying myself.
If I look back a couple days to when I was hiking around in the rain, getting wet, and riding around in a cramped bus, then I can clearly see my excitement on life. I don’t know what it is about struggling that I find so much amusement and satisfaction in. I like the thrill of surpassing the hardships that come my way. Or simply, I like laughing about the ridiculousness of life sometimes. What can I say, I laugh a lot.

Swala, our catamaran boat down to Colombia from Panama, was our home for 5 days and 5 nights. We had three days cruising around the gorgeous San Blas Islsnds and then two days in open water.
A list of some of the happenings:
1) Amazing home cooked meals. Some of these meals being fresh seafood.
2) Dirty. Swimming in the sea was my only shower for a week. Oddly, I feel I look the same when I’m squeaky clean and or dirty haha. I just felt physically gross with all the sea salt that stuck to my body.
3) Lazy days. I managed to sleep so much. I think it was the rocking of the boat that just put me to sleep. I definitely had the best sleep in comparison to others there.
4) Rough looking. I had massive welts from some kind of allergic reaction on my upper thighs. Both of my feet had multiple cuts because I accidentally brushed them against coral (which for the record really stings when swimming in salt water, so that sucked). And then my hair was by far the greasiest I ever seen it.
5) Great people. Our boat can hold up to 10 passengers, but we only had 5. Everyone felt like family.
6) Seasick. One open water day was rather choppy. The only thing that made it bearable was laying down. No one threw up, but we all were feeling pretty rough.
7) Awesome crew. The crew was so sweet, fun, and caring. They made sure we never left hungry and they were always there to help!

Some tidbits on Valparaiso: 1. Stairs; they got a lot of them. 2. El Guaton; restaurant with massive food portions and Jeff and I went there far too much. 3. Graffiti; it is literally everywhere here. 4. Empeñadas; a delicious snack at any time of the day and sold at any time of the day. 5. Street sushi; sketchy coolers filled of sushi for sale. 6. Colectivo; a lifesaver from walking up the dreaded stairs. Basically, it is a taxi with a specific route that is really cheap. 7. The port; a favorite of Jeff and I, as we spent endless amounts of time basking in the sun, while watching street performers (specifically a puppeteer who seemed to be there every time).

Peru Hop
Jeff and I did a quick google search of buses in Peru and ran across a glorious advertisement of Peru Hop. Basically, it is a hop on and off bus that takes you to the major attractions with some additional free tours.
Now, the Peru Hop bus is definitely not my normal mode of transport, as it takes away the fun of experiencing local transport! However, we only had a month in Peru and the bus made perfect sense for us to see all the sites in good timing. Also, this trip we had expensive equipment along, so having safe buses was a nice plus.
As a whole, we had a great time with the buses and met a lot of other Gringo travelers. I did feel like I kind of cheated with traveling because the buses made everything so easy! They even booked your hostel and other tours if you wanted right on the bus! Yes, it was a completely different way of traveling.
Nonetheless, we were able to see some wonderful sites of the beach, desert, mountains, and cities.
Peru Hop- “Safe, Flexible, Fun” haha how’s that for a cheesy slogan ;)
