Catch Me If You Can 1/3
Mob!Bucky x Single mom police officer ReaderÂ
This is a crack fic, ridiculousness, cuteness, angstttt.Â
Warnings: Kidnapping, fluffffff, single mom reader, crappy ex, Mob Bucky is a whole ass warningÂ
LMK how you feel about these 2Â
Part 2
Part 3
-
The plan was simple. Not the most ideal, not the first thing the mob boss would have planned to but desperate times called for desperate measures. He needed this shipment to go through and he was done being patient.Â
âWe gotta move quickâ Bucky murmured, driving slowly behind the target, the dark windows of the SUV making it impossible to see who was inside. As soon as the traffic light turned red, they stopped the truck, swinging the doors open and stepping in front of their mark.Â
âHey! What are you-âÂ
âShh, just get in the carâ Bucky towered over him, his face stern, cocking an eyebrow at the big eyes that stared up at him. Sam and Steve were by his side with equally stoic expressions, nodding to the open door, their hostage reluctantly getting into the backseat with an annoyed huff. They drove to Buckyâs club, target in tow as they made their way to the office, strange looks exchanged by patrons, looking at Buckyâs latest captive.Â
Steve shut the door while Bucky strode across the room to answer a call, breathing a sigh of relief hearing the deal had gone off without a hitch. Nothing had been seized and the deal was set, thanks to his last minute decision. He reached for a crystal decanter, pouring a glass of whiskey for himself when a voice caught his attention.Â
âWhy am I hereâ Bucky turned around to face all 4 feet, 2 inches of his hostage, little furrowed brows knitted in the middle, arms crossed with his chest puffed out, a heavy bookbag making his solid stance a little wobbly. âIs this because my mommy wants to put you in jail?â Bucky nearly choked on his whisky while Steve snorted, doing a poor job to mask his laugh. âI can see why. Kidnapping is against the lawâÂ
By this point, both Sam and Steve were nearly on the floor, attempting to keep their stoic expressions on by covering their mouths, covering their laugh with a cough. Bucky raised a brow, not sure if he was insulted or impressed at the sass and lack of fear the 8 year old had. None of them were exactly fans of anything that involved children. It was an unspoken rule; children were always left untouched. He had to break that rule this time though, knowing if things had gone south, it would have led to a gang war which would have been far worse than the stunt he just pulled kidnapping a police offers son.Â
Police officer.Â
Bucky had most of the justice system and law enforcement at his fingertips, all happily bowing to his bidding, letting his deals and illegal activities slip under the radar. Most were more than happy to comply with what he asked. Most were happy to turn a blind eye.Â
Except the departments newest officer.Â
The absolute bane of his very existence.
The only person who had actually ever managed to get him arrested though he was quickly released; no one else wanting to get on his bad side by actually pressing charges.Â
But you refused to back down.
At first Bucky brushed it off, figuring youâd get with the program and eventually quieten down but no. You were constantly there, making his job more difficult than it had to be, your irritatingly righteous need to keep the city free of gang activity driving him up the wall.Â
The last straw was a few weeks ago when he had set up an arms deal with the East side of the city, an exchange of weapons, but more importantly, a possible alliance between groups. Things going successfully would mean more protection for both the North and East and stronger joint front. You had managed to track communication between the groups, readying a team to shut down the exchange, ignoring the warnings you got from the mob boss.Â
Bucky was done playing nice.Â
It was more than the police just showing up. His power meant everyone listened to him. No one, not even the law disobeyed or strayed from his word. A single officer looking to take him down would have shown weakness; that he didnât have all the control he should have. Weak links were unacceptable.
Which lead to his plan.
To hold onto your son for awhile so youâd abandon the plan youâd put together, none of your colleagues willing to stop anything on their own, everyone retreating far away from the deal while it took place.Â
And it worked.Â
He had managed to take your son while he was on his way home from school and you had been informed of his location. Everything else went smoothly; problem solved. Still, nothing prepared him for how unbothered and how at ease his little captive would be.Â
âIâm guessing youâre the man mommy calls -â Your son blinked at Bucky, chewing his lips, thinking for a moment before continuing. âShe says I canât use those words. Iâm gonna call you Uncle Buckyâ He shrugged, plopping onto the chair, grabbing one of Buckyâs fountain pens, proceeding to doodle on a notepad on the desk.Â
âYou-you canât-â For the first time in his life Bucky found himself speechless, looking incredulously at the little boy proceed to draw, the mop of dark brown hair on his head, covering his eyes slightly.Â
âItâs Mr. Barnesâ He muttered, while your son tossed his book bag off to grab a comic book that was inside, drawing a character that was on the cover.Â
âItâs Jordanâ your son replied, now fully focused on his Batman cartoon.Â
âI like this kidâ Steve half wheezed while Bucky stared at the little thing in front of him, his lips struggling to stay in a firm line, the corners itching to tug up into a smile.Â
âMommy said youâre a bad manâ He piqued, looking at the mob boss from the corner of his eye, âI canât say you did yourself any favors today Mr. Uncle BuckyâÂ
Before Steve and Sam could full on belly laugh, your panicked voice carried through the bar, nearing the office.Â
âJordan? Jordan!â The office doors slammed open to your frantic face, running over to your little one as soon as your eyes landed on him, scooping him in your arms, âBaby, are you okay?â
Bucky felt his heart soften for a moment, watching your heart break and mend itself all at once as soon as you had your son wrapped in your arms again. He shook his head, reminding himself of why he took your son in the first place, ignoring the warmth that was trying to melt his soul.Â
âYou fu-â You bit your tongue, taking deep breath, keeping in mind there were little ears listening. âHow could you?!â
âHad to get a message across doll, you donât seem to listenâ Bucky shrugged while you let out a law growl, hauling your son up and grabbing his school bag, wanting to get him out of there and back home more than anything else.Â
âThis isnât overâ You shot over your shoulder before leaving the office and exiting the bar. Bucky couldnât help but smirk slightly, he didnât like you but he couldnât help but admire the fiery fearless side of you that never backed down, not even to him.Â
âMâsure it isnât, mama bearâ Bucky murmured to himself, inspecting the little doodle your son left behind; an image of Batman and a small Robin.Â
Of course you were not able to do anything about the kidnapping; none of the higher ups were willing to put their neck on the line to arrest Bucky and your boss shrugged, giving you a very pointed I told you so look.Â
Jordan also seemed unaffected with the whole ordeal, often asking you what Uncle Bucky was up to these days as if he were a colleague from work. Truthfully, you were not even 100% what Bucky had been up to. Things had been suspiciously calm ever since the incident happened and while you were thankful for some peace and quiet, you wondered if he was up to something.Â
Nothing was ever quiet with that man.Â
Meanwhile you also had other problems to deal with. While work calmed down, your stress was higher than ever looking at the number of missed calls on you phone from Jordanâs father. The very man who decided he wanted nothing to do with either of you the day you found out you were pregnant. The man who promptly kicked you out of the house to fend for yourself. The man who had now decided would be a great time to reenter your sons life and be a stand up father.Â
And maybe get some spousal benefits from your job.Â
You could never catch a break.Â
A few weeks later - Buckyâs office
âYou kept this, huh?â Steve picked up the doodle on Buckyâs desk, smiling at the way Buckyâs eyes grew wide before trying to back to his signature frown. Â
âDidnât noticeâ Bucky lied, though his best friend could see right through him, knowing Bucky didnât keep just anything on his table, every single item on the desk having a purpose.Â
âHe kinda reminds me of youâ Steve pointed out, thinking back to all the times little Bucky had stood up for him when they were kids, putting on a brave face in front of the meanest. âKinda looks like you tooâÂ
âHmâ Bucky grunted, wondering himself why he still had the picture. He made a conscious decision not to throw it out; each time he had to write something down, heâd grab a paper below it and carefully put the drawing back on top. Steve was right; Jordan did look like him when he was little and had the same feisty, sassy personality as he did though he was sure the bravery your son had was from you.Â
You.
In a strange way, Bucky missed having to deal with your nagging and threats to take him down; business had been quiet so there wasnât a reason for you to chase after him. You made things interesting; itâs not that he wanted anyone to make his job harder than it had to be but sometimes the challenge was nice. Plus it didnât hurt that you absolutely gor-
For fucks sake.Â
âI need a drinkâ Bucky shook his head, flicking away the odd feeling he started to feel in his tummy, deciding he needed something stiff over whatever he had stashed in his office. Steve snorted, easily reading his friends thoughts while they made their way to a locked cabinet below the bar counter, fishing for something that would silence unnecessary thoughts. He grabbed a glass, dropping in two ice cubes and filling the glass, taking a long draw of the dark liquid before his attention was pulled elsewhere.Â
Buckyâs eyes grew wide seeing the mop of dark hair and big eyes make its way through the crowded bar, customers giving each other strange glances at the little boy with a school bag who had no business being in a gang leaders club. Â
âKid, what are you-
âMommyâs hurtâ Jordan looked up at Bucky with teary eyes, swallowing away the lump that formed in his throat, putting his best brave face on instead, now wasnât the time to cry.Â
âWhat?â
âShe - someone hurt herâÂ
The thought of someone hurting you sent a surge of anger through Bucky, his jaw clenching as he slammed his glass down. It was ironic, considering the number of times he had wished you would disappear but not like this. Not once had he ever thought of hurting you; at the end of the day, you had always stood for what was right.Â
âWhere is sheâ Bucky took Jordanâs hand in his, holding it firmly to ground him while making his way outside and towards the SUV. He didnât have to even look at Steve to know he was already by his side and sliding into the drivers seat.Â
âHome, we live on-â
âI know where you live kidâ Bucky chuckled slightly while Steve was already weaving through traffic and pulling up to your street, screeching to a halt in front of your house.Â
Bucky helped Jordan hop out of the SUV and lead him to you, the front door left while open with the handle broken off. There were clear signs of a struggle, seeing broken pictures on the floor and a few dents in the walls, the mess continuing all the way up the stairs to your bedroom. Bucky instructed Jordan to wait downstairs with Steve, worried about what condition he was going to find you in.Â
You were holding yourself up against the wall, your arm clutching your bloodied side, putting pressure on the gash that sliced you. Your head still throbbing from where you had been hit. You could barely register what was happening, gasping at the sound of Buckyâs voice suddenly in your room.Â
âCâmon, dollâ His arm snaked around you, pulling you to his, holding up some of your weight.Â
âWhere are we goingâ You wanted to fight back but the pain was making you dizzy and spots were starting to cloud your vision.Â
âWeâre -woah-â Bucky caught you before you slipped, scooping you in his arms, bridal style âWeâre going to get you fixed upâ He spoke softly, carrying you out of your room and carefully down the stairs towards the SUV. You were in too much pain to protest, slipping in and out of consciousness during the drive over.Â
Steve had already slipped Jordan into the front seat, the both of them chatting over who would win in a hotdog eating competition; Superman, Batman or the Joker. He could see Jordan sneak worried glances behind him to look over at you, fidgeting with the straps of his backpack.Â
âSheâll be okayâ Steve whispered to him, giving him a reassuring smile as he pulled up to the mansion. âYour mamaâs strong, yâknow sheâs the only one Uncle Bucky is scared ofâ He gave your son a wink before helping him out of the car and opening the door so Bucky could carry you to his room. He carefully set you down on his bed, wasting no time grabbing a first aid kit he kept tucked under the bed for emergencies while you groaned, trying to sit up.Â
âBarnes, what are you-â
âJust lie down doll, let me clean this up firstâ He carefully lifted your blouse to assess how bad the injury was, soaking a cotton ball in some disinfectant.
âAh!-â You winced, hissing out in pain at the saturated cotton ball Bucky pressed onto your skin, cleaning the area as gently as he could, his focus shifting between getting you better and wondering who did this to you. Heâd have to worry about that later.Â
âSorry, sorryâ Bucky murmured, gently blowing onto the cleaned area, cooling your skin before grabbing a needle and threat, starting on some sutures to close the gash. âIâll be quick, just bear with meâ You gritted your teeth feeling the needle poke you.
âHow-how do you know how to do thisâ Your voice was strained, struggling to keep it steady while Bucky threaded the needle as gently and quickly as possible, neatly closing off the gash.Â
âGotta know this in my line of work, sugarâ He smirked giving you a lopsided grin when you rolled your eyes, squeaking when he gently pushed you back down when you tried to get up. âRest for a bitâÂ
You reluctantly laid against the plush mattress looking up at the baby blue eyes softly peering down at you, the same blue eyes your normally wanted to poke out of frustration.Â
âIâll be fine, we can go ho-â You were going to say you could go home but it was clear home wasnât the safest option, not after what had just happened.Â
âCâmon, stay here for the nightâ He wasnât exactly going to leave you room to do anything else, there was no way he was going to let you go home after what he had just seen. He was more than happy to sleep in a tent outside of his own home if it meant youâd just stay somewhere safe. âAt least for todayâÂ
âI-we canât-Jordan-âÂ
â-WOULD LOVE TO STAY HEREâÂ
Bucky let out a genuine laugh hearing your sons voice carried through the doorway where he was clearly eavesdropping. You snorted, shaking your head and closing your eyes at your sons antics, exhaustion making it hard for you to move anyway.Â
âWe shouldnât be hereâ You whispered, feeling your conscious battle within yourself. You were supposed to be fighting for the right side of the law. Bucky was the opposite of that. Then why didnât this feel wrong? Youâd spent countless hours trying to put him away. So why did you feel so safe?Â
âI donât-
âJust for tonightâ Bucky stated softly but firmly, leaving you little room to argue. He grabbed you a tshirt and some joggers of his, letting you clean off and chance while he slipped out of the room. He was met with curious eyes peering up at him, your son patiently waiting to know if you were okay.Â
âSheâs okay, just getting cleaned up. Let your mama restâ Bucky whispered, leading Jordan to the TV room where Peter was busying himself with video games. âHey Parker, brought you a worthy opponentâ Peter grinned, handing Jordan a controller and shifting over so he could plop down beside him.Â
âSheâs gonna be okay?â Jordan whispered up at Bucky, feeling a sense of calm around the man his mom usually used no-no words to describe. Surely he couldnât be that bad?Â
âNo oneâs stronger than your mamaâ Bucky smiled, ruffling his hair before coming back to check on you. You had slipped back into bed, ignoring the way Buckyâs clothes were soft and comfy to wear, his scent making your insides flutter unnecessarily.Â
âDonât you look cozy, officerâ Bucky smirked, sauntering over with a glass of water and pain killers, leaving them on the bedside table for you. You rolled your eyes though gratefully taking 2 tablets for your aching head.Â
âWhereâs Jordan?âÂ
âCurrently beating everyoneâs ass in Mario KartâÂ
âThis doesnât mean youâre off the hook Barnesâ You tried to keep your voice firm but the playful smirk he was giving you was infectious. You bit your lip to keep your lips from tugging up, choosing to frown more instead but that only seemed to egg him on more.Â
âCourse, darlinââ He drawled out, giving you a wink before bidding you good night, âWouldnât have it any other wayâ He turned the light off and gently shut the door, making his way back down to make sure Jordan had something for dinner.Â
You pulled the covers up, sighing into the soft plush pillows and sheets, letting sleep take over, ignoring the way your inner conscious continued to debate itself. He didnât have to help you. Didnât have to keep you safe. Didnât have to do any of this and yet here you were. You and your son. Both safe. Because of him.Â
Maybe he wasnât so bad after all...

Moving in Slow Motion
Pairing: Mob!Bucky Barnes x Single Mom!Reader
Summary: Everything changes for Bucky when he meets you and your daughter.
Word Count: Over 1.2k
Warnings: Fluff, meet-cute, daughter nicknamed Sweet Pea, Bucky Barnes (he's a warning, okay?)
A/N: How mob!Bucky and our single mom met. Thanks to @whisperlullaby and @targaryenvampireslayer for letting me babble about this AU. â¤ď¸ Not beta read and written on my phone, so any and all mistakes are my own. Please follow @navybrat817-sideblog for new fics and notifications. Comments, reblogs, feedback are loved and appreciated!
Bucky met you and Sweet Pea at a science museum and his life changed for the better.
Growing up, Bucky enjoyed going to the museum. Beyond developing critical and analytical thinking, science encourages curiosity and creativity.
In another life, he liked to imagine he taught science and had a family instead of being a mob boss.
It wasnât fair to think that since his friends were his family, but something was missing that they couldnât provide him with.
Whether for nostalgic purposes or to clear his head, he found himself back in the familiar museum. He stood and silently observed various exhibits, his eyes darting back and forth as families bustled around him and enjoyed the interactive experiences.
Something tightened in his chest and he didnât want to ponder on that for long.
A chorus of chatter and excitement drew his attention and he stepped back to make room when he saw a group of kids in matching shirts walk by. Field trips were always something to look forward to and the wonder in their eyes reminded him of simpler times.
âMama, Mama, look!â A sweet voice called out before something bumped his leg. He glanced down to see a little girl look up at him with wide eyes. âSorry, Mister.â
Bucky Barnes struck fear into powerful men all over the world. He could only imagine how he looked to this sweet little girl with his large and imposing stature.
People liked to say he had a cold heart, but one look at her and it melted.
âNothing to be sorry for, Sweet Pea.â He wasnât sure where the nickname came from as he crouched down to make sure she was okay. âYouâre not hurt, are you?â
She quickly shook her head and appeared to relax a bit when he gave her a small smile. He didnât want her to be afraid of him. âNo, Mister. Iâm okay.â
He nodded, glad to hear that. âYou just got excited by everything here, didnât you? I get it.â
âUh-huh.â She smiled, making his smile widen. He didnât smile much these days. âScience is my favorite!â
âItâs my favorite, too,â he said, pointing to one of the rooms. âDid you know in that room you can try to build your own roller coaster?â
She gasped, her eyes lighting up. âI can?!â
He chuckled. Her enthusiasm was infectious. âYou sure can. Iâll bet you can build a really good one.â
âSir, did she bump into you?â You rushed over through the crowd as Buckyâs eyes flickered up, his breath caught in his throat. You werenât in a matching shirt like the kids, but wore a similar color. âIâm so sorry.â
He couldnât help but stare at you as he stood upright, everything moving in slow motion. The little girl made his heart melt, but you set it on fire.
âI said sorry, Mama,â your daughter said, a slight pout on her face when you put a protective arm around her and gave him a wary look. He appreciated your protective instinct. âAccidents happen.â
Bucky wasnât ashamed to admit to himself that his eyes went to your left hand and was happy to not see a wedding ring. Questions went through his mind, ranging from why you werenât married to what was the full backstory of you and your daughter?
âI know how happy you are to be here, but you also need to be careful and stay close to me,â you said in a gentle, but firm tone. Bucky had a feeling you werenât referring to bumping into people, but to avoid strangers. âOkay?â
âOkay, Mama,â she replied, hugging your legs.
âItâs fine. Really. Iâm pretty sure I walked straight into a wall once because one of the exhibits distracted me,â he teased, unsure of why he wanted to talk to you. He just did.
You smiled after a moment, keeping your arm around your daughter. âI appreciate that. This visit was all she talked about for the last week.â
âI donât blame her. I hope she has the best time,â he said sincerely.
Your daughter tugged on your shirt. âShow him what I colored!â
Your eyes went to Bucky before you dug into your tote bag. âWhat do we say?â You asked your daughter.
âPlease,â she replied.
Bucky smiled to himself when you took out a coloring sheet with various science and space objects. âWow! Did you color this?â He asked the little girl. âItâs very good.â
She smiled proudly. âUh-huh!â
âItâs for a contest. The winner gets a free season pass to the museum,â you explained, carefully tucking it back in your bag.
âI hope I win,â she said, hopefulness in her innocent eyes.
Maybe he could make a donation and get that season pass for her. Hell, he had enough money to buy the museum if he wished.
âWell, Iâm not a judge, but youâd win if it was up to me,â Bucky said, taking it as a victory when she smiled again.
You gazed at him before you shook your head. âWe should get back to the group.â
âAww,â she pouted, giving Bucky a small wave. âBye bye, Mister.â
âBucky. My name is Bucky,â he said, wishing the wholesome interaction didnât have to end. He was completely enamored with the two of you. âIt was nice meeting you, Sweet Pea.â
âSweet Pea?â You repeated. He worried he made a mistake in saying that before you smiled. âI call her that sometimes.â
âItâs fitting,â he said, tucking a bit of his hair back. âAny chance I might get your name before you go?â
You hesitated before you told him. You even gave him your daughterâs real name. âI hope you enjoy the rest of your day.â
Bucky was probably pushing his luck, but heâd regret it if he didnât try. âLook, I know this is forward, but can I give you my number?â He asked, giving you what he hoped was a charming yet soft stare.
He didnât take offense to the skepticism in your eyes. âUmâŚâ You glanced over your shoulder to make sure the group was still close by.
âItâs more than okay if you say no,â he said. He didnât want you to feel pressured in the slightest and he shouldnât have assumed you were single because you werenât wearing a ring.
It was also selfish in a way since you and your daughter seemed so bright and his world was dark, but maybe you two were the real reason he went to the museum today.
After a moment and exchanging a look with your daughter, you shrugged and handed him your phone. âSure, why not?â
His heart soared when he put his number in, wondering how quickly heâd hear from you. âYou wonât regret it,â he promised, making sure to give Sweet Pea one more smile, too. âHave fun making the roller coaster. And good luck with the contest.â
âThanks, Mister Bucky!â
Buckyâs heart melted all over again as she pulled you away. You even glanced back and gave him a tiny smile, which he returned with one of his own.
He didnât know you yet, but he sensed deep down that your expectations were set low when it came to men. He was going to enjoy raising the bar.
And he was going to enjoy giving you and Sweet Pea the best life possible, if you gave him a chance.
Wait âtil the gang hears about thisâŚ
I don't have a name yet for the AU and still coming up with a nickname for our reader (Dream Girl and Starlight have been suggested!), but I can't wait to share more. Check out Heart and Home here! Love and thanks for reading! â¤ď¸

Illicit affairs (chapter 1)
Summary: Bucky and Y/n are in arranged marriage. Bucky is having an affair. This is all it is about... Let's see where Y/n's fate lies... Should we?
Pairings: Bucky x reader, Bucky x Dot ...
Genre: angst, affair, unrequited love
'Love' The word floats between all of us on a soft gust of air. 'Deep, abiding, unconditional love. You want it so much you're willing to live for it' Most people think the greatest sacrifice they can make is to die for something. They are wrong.
The truest act of love someone can make is to live for something- to allow it to consume you and turn you into a version of yourself you never recognize.
It is a tale of 4 souls twisted and helpless in their love lives. It is a narrative that contains some heartbreaks, the bitter taste of unreciprocated affection, and one that dared not to unveil itself- which takes courage to love for so long from a distance.
This is a story where one soul offered everything at love's altar, a vulnerable sacrifice, while another callously exploited that very vulnerability, sowing discord where passion once blossomed...
Y/n's pov
The room feels colder than usual as I stare out the window, my heart sinking with every passing minute. The anticipation is suffocating, and my patience wears thin. "Again," I whisper, the word heavy with disappointment.
I watch the street below, searching for a familiar figure that is yet to appear. The seconds drag on, and my anxiety intensifies. The lump in my throat grows, making it harder to swallow. A sigh escapes me, a mixture of frustration and hurt.
"He is late again."
I can't help but clench my fists on the curtains, the fabric bunching in my grip. The emptiness in the room echoes the ache in my chest. Tears threaten to spill, and I fight to hold them back. I bite my tongue, tasting the metallic tang of frustration as I try to steady my trembling emotions.
I force myself to look away from the window, taking in shaky breaths to regain composure. Each breath feels like a struggle, a battle against the rising tide of disappointment. I look up, my eyes blurred with unshed tears, and will myself to find strength.
Deep breaths. In and out.
I wrestle with my emotions, fighting the urge to crumble. It's a lonely battle, and the weight of unspoken words hangs heavy in the air. The silence is deafening, broken only by the echoes of my own heartbeat.
half an hour later
The sound of the door knob rattling pulls me from my thoughts, and I turn to see him entering, supposedly from his so-called 'jogging' session. His disheveled hair and the hickey marks on his neck don't escape my notice, but I keep my gaze down, focusing on chopping the ingredients for breakfast. The rhythmic slicing helps channel my frustration into the task.
Silence hangs in the air, heavy with unspoken words and the weight of disappointment. I clench my jaw, determined not to let the emotions bubbling within me overflow. Why me, I wonder.
I put on a fake smile, a mask to conceal the turmoil beneath the surface. Breaking the tense quiet, I decide to confront the reality before me, choosing words carefully as I break the uneasy silence.
"How was it?"
The question hangs in the air as I continue chopping, my hands steady despite the storm raging inside me. The tension is heavy as I await his response.
He seems startled, caught off guard by the unexpected interruption to your silence. Nervously, he stammers a response.
"Huh? W-What?"
"Jogging... You went jogging, right?" I press, my eyes focused on the task at hand, but my peripheral vision catches his every move. I put down the knife, turning to face him with a fake smile plastered on my face.
"Oh, jogging... Yes, jogging... Yeah, it was good... good," he replies, the words rushed and accompanied by a forced smile. The tension lingers, hanging in the air like an unspoken truth, and I maintain my fake smile, masking the hurt that hides beneath the surface.
The question hangs in the air, a carefully veiled inquiry concealing the knowledge I already possess. "Bucky," I murmur, the weight of the question palpable in the room. "how many years has it been since our arranged union? One or two?" I lock eyes with him, searching for a flicker of guilt, a hint that he might confess to the secrets he thinks are well hidden.
The room feels heavy with the unspoken truth as I press on, my voice carrying a subtle undercurrent of accusation. "You would never hurt me, right?" I ask, knowing the answer even before the words leave my lips. His eyes betray a hint of unease, a fleeting glimpse of a man caught in his own web of betrayal.
I turn my attention to the task at hand, my fingers gripping the edge of the counter as I continue, "It's just, sometimes I wonder about our arranged marriage. Do you?" My words linger in the air, a calculated challenge, as I maintain a facade of innocence, masking the storm of emotions that swirl within me.
Bucky shifts uncomfortably under the weight of my penetrating gaze, his eyes momentarily faltering before regaining composure. "Uh, yeah, it's been two years," he answers, attempting to sound nonchalant. His attempt at a casual demeanor betrays a hint of unease, a subtle acknowledgment that he senses the underlying tension.
I maintain my facade, the corners of my lips twitching into a semblance of a smile. "And you'd never hurt me, right?" I press further, watching for any subtle changes in his expression. Bucky hesitates, a fleeting moment where the truth seems to hang in the air. "Of course not," he replies, the words lacking the conviction they once held.
As I turn back to my task, the air between us crackles with unspoken truths and concealed betrayals, creating a rift that neither of us dares to bridge.
Bucky's POV
Bucky's response hangs in the air, a weight on his conscience that he can't shake off. As I turn away, the guilt tightens in his stomach. He can't escape the unease, knowing he's betraying not just the arrangement but the person at the center of it.
He sighs, heavy with remorse, as he heads for the bathroom. The sound of running water becomes a feeble attempt to drown out the turmoil in his mind. Bucky leans against the cool tiles, steam clouding the mirror, mirroring the fog in his thoughts.
"What have I done?" he whispers, the weight settling in his stomach. The jog's facade crumbles, revealing the truth of his choices. The affair, the liesâit's a web tightening around him, and he's not sure how to break free without causing irreparable damage.
Under the shower's cold stream, Bucky stands, his hand braced against the tiles. The water pounds against him, a feeble attempt to wash away the guilt. As each droplet falls, he confronts the consequences of his actions. The arranged marriage, once a distant pact, now feels shattered. Bucky closes his eyes, trying to block out the guilt threatening to consume him. In the cascade of water, he faces the mess he's made, uncertain if there's any way to salvage the delicate threads holding their union together.
The cold shower beats against Bucky, a stark contrast to the heat of his thoughts. His hand tightens on the tiles as he battles the storm inside. The water's steady drumming echoes his emotions, a chaotic mix of regret and confusion.
"What am I doing?" he mutters, the words lost in the shower's noise. The images of his mistakes play on a loop in his mindâthe marks on the neck, the messed-up sheets. It's a vivid reminder of betrayal.
The truth is undeniable. The affair breaks trust, a breach of the commitment he made, even if reluctantly, in this arranged marriage. As the water rushes over him, Bucky tries to wash away not just the physical traces but the guilt staining his conscience.
The fogged-up mirror reflects a man in conflict. His guilty eyes meet their own gaze, and for a moment, he doesn't recognize himself.
"What have I become?" The question lingers, unanswered, as he stands beneath the unrelenting water. The bathroom isn't a refuge; it amplifies the loneliness. Bucky is stuck in a silent struggle, torn between duty and desire, unsure if he can find a way out without leaving everything shattered behind.
Dot's POV
(girl with whom Bucky is cheating with)
"He is gone again," I murmur to myself, my gaze fixed on the fan dangling from the ceiling. The bed beside me feels emptier than usual, a constant reminder of his absence. The weight of silence settles in the room, and once again, I find myself engulfed in loneliness...
Every day, it's the same struggle. A battle between the promise I make to myself and the undeniable pull he has on me. "Every time... every day. I let him in," I admit in the quiet of my thoughts. The bed, cold and untouched, bears witness to my internal conflict. It's a routine of surrendering to a love that should never have blossomed.
"I can always stop," I tell myself daily, a mantra of resistance that crumbles with each passing moment. The realization hits hard â I'm ruining myself for him. The weight of guilt presses down as I acknowledge the gravity of my actions.
"I am so bad," I confess silently, my heart heavy with self-loathing. I'm entangled in an affair with a married man who has a loving wife. The reality of my choices echoes in the hollow spaces of the room. "I'm so sorry," I whisper to no one but myself, a futile apology to the shadows that witness my moral descent.
"I hate myself... I hate it," the thought echoes, a painful admission of the self-destructive path I tread. Love, tangled with regret, becomes a poison that seeps into every corner of my being. Yet, despite the self-flagellation, the ache for him lingers, a bittersweet melody that refuses to be silenced.
The room, my safe place, now shows the mess inside me. I turn from the fan's spin, lost in the shadows. The secret love has left marks, stains that no apology can wipe away. As I try to understand this mess of feelings, I wonder if I can ever fix the pieces of my self-respect that have shattered.
The words slip out in a hushed murmur, barely audible in the quiet room. "I am sorry." The weight of the apology hangs in the air, a fragile attempt to mend the fractures that linger between us. It's a simple phrase, but it carries the echoes of regret and a longing for forgiveness. The weight of regret settles in, and I can't help but wonder if these simple words will ever be enough to mend the fractures I've created.
The illicit affair has left its mark, a stain that no amount of whispered apologies can erase. As I search through the wreckage of my emotions, I'm left to wonder if the fragments of my self-respect can ever be pieced back together.
Not everyone gets the same version of me.
One person might tell you I'm an amazing beautiful soul.
Another person will say I'm a coldhearted bitch.
Believe them both, I act accordingly.
-love

For the photo dump idk why but #8 feels like Higher love Ari or really any of the Bucky's
âBucky! Seriously?â You wave the phone in your hand and roll your eyes, watching the super soldierâs eyes narrow and his jaw clench.
Hey so like in case there was any confusion
Youâre fucking mine
âI donât trust them.â His response is astute and possessive in its intent however its delightful enough to make your thighs quake. âAnd this is the first time youâre meeting them.â
The conversation comes to an end as the doors open and the party officially starts with Tony Stark entering the room with his arms raised deserving the ultimate victory prize for giving Bucky a penthouse suite.
âBarnes, welcome to your new home.â He greeted Bucky with a quick fired grin, and then looked at you. âWhose this?â
âMy wife-â
â-girlfriend.â You scolded Bucky and threw him a look, feigning anger despite wanting to find his scowl adorable. âWeâve been on like 12 dates-â
âMy wife, Stark.â Buckyâs tone grew persistent, his hand reaching for your waist as a means to pull him closer to you, or to pull you closer to him.
âWhatâs the story? Howâd you meet?â Tonyâs eyes narrowed ever so slightly, a dull and almost incomprehensible whir coming from his purple tinted glasses.
âYouâre not serious? Bucky you canât be serious-â
âI met my future wife while she was on a first date with my best friend,â Buckyâs grin was illusive yet warm, his artificial arm whirring as his fingers curled around your hand, âSteven Grant Rogers is the reason why we met.â
âYouâre not saying that during our wedding-â
âDo you admit weâre gonna get married doll?â His teasing tongue found yours in a heated goodnight kiss, teasing and taunting you with the promise of a long night if this wasnât your parting.
âGoodnight, Bucky.â
âIâve gotta get you a house first, and then a ring. I promise I will, darling. And then youâre mine.â
âSteve.â âThrough Steve.â
âA house tour and a home-warming party.â Tony glazed over your dual answer and stepped aside, allowing the two of you to partake in the first glance at this penthouse suite Tony gave Bucky.
âA house-â
â-and then a ring.â Bucky whispered into your hair, kissing your temple softly. âIâm doing it all, sweetheart.â
â-sheâs a teacher, Tony. She teaches elementary-â Your attention shifted to the conversation you could hear between Steve and Tony, the prior conveying the same tight lipped story you chose to go with, when giving the answer of how you and Bucky met.
â-thereâs more to it, Rogers. Quit holding out on me, pal.â Tony pressed, urging Steve to tell the duty details, and before you could have listened to the results of Tonyâs nattering, a hand grasped yours and yanked you aside.
âNatasha,â Buckyâs eyes followed you, his voice taking a slightly deeper bite as he warned his friend and fellow avenger not to drag you too far.
âGod, youâre beautiful. And your little girlâŚâ Natasha bounced your little 18 month old baby on her hip, pleased by her grabbing hands reaching for her hair. âAuntie Natasha, youâll call me auntie Nat, and we-â
âNatasha.â Bucky stepped close, his eye hovering on you and then your baby, protectively focused on both of you.
Focusing on his instant family. Even before the 12 or so dates in, Bucky was already endeared and enthralled by you and your child.
âRelax, Barnes.â Natasha prodded his shoulder with her finger and gently nudged him away. âGo relax, I promise to take good care of your girlfriend-â
âWife.â Bucky corrected her, and stole a searing kiss from you before he kissed your babyâs forehead, giving Nat one last lingering warning.
â12 dates,â Natasha quirked her lips and smirked, âhe was in love on date one.â

The Lodger-Chapter 1
(My first Bucky fic! Un-betaâd, my mistakes are my own. It shall be a multi-chapter fic, warnings will appear before every chapter but itâs mostly just fluff. Please Enjoy!)
Fic Synopsis: After the events of TFATWS, Bucky is just looking for something normal, something familiar. Will he find that by renting a room in a Brooklyn townhouse?
Reader was just looking for someone reliable and trustworthy to rent out the room thatâd been vacant for far too long. The last thing that she ever expected was an Avenger, especially one who was so good with her son.
Sunlight filtered in through the gap in the curtains cascading over the long unused furniture. Dust particles danced along the soft sunbeams, a reminder of just how long it had been. For six months the spare room in your house had gone vacant. It was closer to seven by the time youâd realized it. In your opinion, the room was a steal. The price point was fairly reasonable, given what you were offering versus other properties in the area. But for some reason you werenât able to keep it rented for more than a few week or so, each lodger only using it for a transition space and some of them stiffed you on the rent. It wasnât the price, it certainly wasnât the look of the place.
For a moment you thought it was the other house occupant who was causing the problems but for the life of you, you couldnât dare blame him. After all, he was your son. Max was a precocious and inquisitive 8 year old, with a love of space and all things cosmic. He mightâve been a little chatty with the lodgers but never annoyingly so. He knew when someone wasnât interested in conversation and respected their boundaries. Youâd taught him well and were proud of him. He definitely wasnât the problem.
Yet, the room remained unoccupied.
You werenât sure how long you could keep the house if the room wasnât brining in revenue, eventually youâd have to sell and move somewhere else. You really didnât want to do that. You didnât want to leave the beautiful townhouse your late husband had chosen with you, it held too many wonderful memories that you couldnât imagine parting with. You could only wait and pray for the right person to fill the vacancy in your home.
With a sigh you closed the door and prayed to the universe for someone good to see the sign in the window.
ââââââââââââââââââââââ
He let out a sigh as he closed the door to his apartment. Heâd chosen it for the location more than anything, somewhere near where he used to live. He could afford it but it just wasnât the same as he remembered. The city itself wasnât the same anymore, but he knew it wouldnât be. Too much time had passed and he no longer recognized Brooklyn anymore. He thought the problem was the busier parts of the city, there were just too many people now and threats felt like they were everywhere. He couldnât relax enough to not be on guard at all times.
Instead of staying close to the main hub he ventured further out to more suburban areas, hoping to find something different. A place to really call home in this century.
He walked for quite some time rather aimlessly, wondering if there would ever be a place that would feel like he wanted it to. It would be nearly impossibly in this day and age to find somewhere with actual postings. Most things like this happened on the internet, according to Sam. Finding one in real life was highly unlikely.
He considered turning back, heading to his empty apartment until he came upon a small townhouse. It was a beautiful building in a quieter part of Brooklyn. His Ma wouldâve never been able to afford a place like that back in the day, thatâs for sure. Especially not with the wonderful way the lush ivy draped over it. The brickwork was even in pristine condition, honestly it was a gorgeous house.
As he observed and appraised the building, the most amazing thing happened. In the bottom window was a neat sign in cursive writing.
âRoom for Rent. Serious inquiries only.â
There was a number underneath and for some reason Bucky wanted nothing more than to call it immediately. He could envision himself in a quaint home like that, somewhere not too close to the city but close enough. What were the chances they would accept him as a tenant? Most people were scared of him, or rather the person they thought he was. Still, he wrote the number down. It wouldnât hurt to tryâŚright?
ââââââââââââââââââââââ
Your phone rang as you stirred dinner.
âMax, can you keep an eye on the soup while I get this?â You asked your son, who was sitting at the table finishing his homework. He nodded and got up, taking the spoon from you. He smiled at the contents of the pot, his favourite soup that heâd been smelling since he got home.
The number on your phone was local but unknown, most likely an inquiry for the room. You sent a silent prayer to whatever deity could help you with this before picking up the call.
âHello?â You asked, hopeful.
âH-hi hello,â A distinct and deep male voice said back. âI am calling about the room for rent? Is-is it still available?â
âIt is.â You said calmly, even though you were too excited that you had an actual inquiry. âAre you interested in seeing the place before you commit?â
âI-yes.â He said back, sounding nervous. âIs that okay?â
âOf course! I work from home so whenever works for you. Any day between 9-2 would work for me, except weekends.â
âOh I uhâŚyeah, does tomorrow work?â
So soon? He must really need a place. Hopefully he wasnât a bad person, you couldnât have that around Max.
âYeah, you know the address so just give me a time.â
âNoon?â
âSounds good. Iâm Y/N, by the way.â You said.
âIâm Bu-James, Iâm James.â
You nodded at the name. âWell, I will see you tomorrow, James.
âSee you then.â
He hung up and you looked to your son, who was now nearly drooling over the soup.
You shook your head and chuckled.
âGive me that, weirdo.â
He laughed. âCanât help it Ma, your French onion is the best!â
The comment warmed your heart as you wrapped your arms around him. It was his Dadâs favourite too.
âWell then, we should finish it and get it in your belly. Whatcha think?â
âYes please!â
You kissed the top of his head before checking the thickness of the soup.
âYouâre in luck! Itâs done.â
Max clapped happily and got out the bowls, waiting to be served. He took his hot bowl to the table carefully, eager to eat. You watched him fondly as he tasted that first spoonful. Letting out a noise of happiness, he began eating with gusto.
You couldnât help think about the lodger, would he fit in with what you had here or would he just be another person who kept to themselves? Would he even want to be in the place?
Youâd just have to wait and see.
ââââââââââââââââââââââ
Bucky was nervous. He hadnât been nervous just to look at a place since the first time out of cryo. He really needed this place, he just hoped he would be accepted, he didnât even care what the interior looked like. As long as it had a locking door and they didnât mind his nightmares, it would be ideal. Maybe even perfect. He adjusted his stupid tie, the one that Sam insisted he wear. But he felt so stupid, his hair was even slicked down a bit, like the old days. It made him look professional but again, didnât help him feel less like a fool. He rung the doorbell, hearing it not fully ring the whole way.
âComing!â A voice said from behind the wood.
He tried not to let his heart beat too fast, but the female voice from over the phone sounded so warm that previous day. He was wondering what kind of person she would be.The door opened and he was floored, the most beautiful dame heâd seen in a long time was standing in front of him. Heâd seen many beautiful women before but the one now standing on the other side of the door put them all to shame, effortlessly so.
âJames?â She asked after a moment, breaking him from his thoughts. He was there to see a room, not ogle a stranger.
He coughed. âYes, thatâs me.â
âCome on in.â She stepped aside, making enough room for him.
He gulped and made himself as small as possible, entering her home.
ââââââââââââââââââââââ
You werenât sure what you were expecting when you thought of the potential lodger, but it was certainly not him. James was an extremely handsome man with the brightest blue eyes youâd ever seen. His chocolate brown hair looked to have been styled haphazardly but it suited him quite well. He seemed to be made of solid muscle but was purposefully hunched over to seem small. He was trying to make you feel comfortable, and you appreciated it.As he walked past you into the hallway, you could smell the scent of him and damn if it wasnât completely intoxicating. Itâd been a while since youâd interacted with any man, let alone one as attractive as James.
You cleared your throat to stop thinking about it, to maintain some sort of professionalism. âSo, uh, the room is this way. It does have a separate entrance which is very secure.â You explained.
He nodded and followed you to the extra room. You opened the door with a key and showed him.
The room itself was already furnished, as youâd hoped it would attract renters. It used to be your husbandâs home office, but youâd converted it after he had died. You needed the extra income. It had its own ensuite bathroom for convenience and had good access to the kitchen without traipsing through the entire house.
âYou can go in if youâd like.â You prompted.
He nodded and walked in, eyes searching around the space.
âHowâŚhow soundproof is the room?â
You were a little nervous at the question, unsure of what to answer. Was he a big partier?
âItâs just that I uh-â he looked uncomfortable. âI have nightmares sometimes.â
âOh.â You replied, that wasnât so bad. Better than you were expecting really. Many people had nightmares and by the looks of him, James probably had some nasty ones. âWell, itâs decently quiet down here. Iâm sure we could look into a long-term solution if it becomes a problem. That is if youâre a good fit.â
He nodded again, understanding what you meant. It would suit him well if it worked.
âThere isâŚa small matter before you make any decision, and me too I suppose.â You told him, hoping it wasnât a deterrent and praying he was a trustworthy person.
He looked at you questioningly.
âAny one who lives here needs to be safe around kids.â You stated.
He thought for a moment. âY-you uh-â
âI have a son. Heâs 8.â You said. âIf you canât legally be around kids or they make you uncomfortable, you can tell me now and this tour can be done. I wonât put my son in danger just for the extra cash.â
âI-I understand.â He said. He had noticed some small items in the hallway that looked to belong to a child and his mind went back to the photos on the wall. Could he really do it? Stay in a home with a mother and child? He wouldnât be a danger to them, he would never hurt a civilian. Plus, with the locking door and extra entrance he could avoid them as much as possible if need be.He would be an idiot to turn the place down. With all utilities included in the rental price, it was a steal in Brooklyn even with his residual army payments heâd been getting since the pardon. But before he agreed, youâd have to know who he was. Maybe youâd say no to him. It was a possibility and he didnât want to be out of the running just for who he was.
âIâm not dangerous.â He said to you. âBut you shouldâŚyou should know who I am.â
You raided a brow, a little apprehensive.
âDo you know who Steve Rogers is?â He gulped, nervously.
You just nodded a little.
âWell IâmâŚMy full name is James Buchanen BarnesâŚâ
âOh.â You replied simply. You knew that he meant, you knew who he was. The former Winter Soldier used to be all over the news before the Blip.
âI understand if that takes me out of the-â
âI have no problem with it.â You cut him off. âAs long as you donât bring any aliens around and put my son in danger, Iâd really like having an avenger around.â
âOh-Iâm notâŚnot really.â He blushed, hun hunching over more.
You held out your hand to him. âAll of this is dependant upon Maxâs opinion and a checking of your references but Iâd like to offer you the room.â
He looked at your hand and then back up to your eyes. He took your hand softly and shook it.
âIâd like that.â
âGreat, I will call you later with the final opinions and we can go from there.â

Your Daughter
Bucky x single mom readerÂ
Imagine Bucky meeting your four year old daughter for the first time. Heâs nervous as hell but excited nonetheless. Heâs heard so much about her and seen so many pictures. He knows this is a big step for both of you, especially because youâve never let any of your dates meet her before. No one had come even close.
Except for Bucky.
Bucky was special. Someone you could trust Someone you could see a future with. Someone you absolutely loved.Â
Still, your daughter came first and you wanted to know how sheâd feel before things when any further. Bucky was more than understanding, letting you take things at your own pace.Â
You decide on a simple outing. Ice cream and then a movie at home.Â
Bucky has always been a gentleman to you. Heâs going to be just the same to your princess as well.Â
He spends hours looking for the perfect outfit, not wanting to look like someone who hobbled off the street, most of his clothes having some type of rip or tear given his line of work. He buys a new shirt and gets a haircut, wanting to make sure he makes a good first impression on your babygirl.Â
He shows up with flowers for the both of you. A large bouquet for you and a sweet arrangement for her with pink and yellow baby roses.Â
âAre these for me?â She looks at the super soldier with heart eyes, already excited to spend the day with him. He knew sheâd be small but he didnât realize just how little sheâd be. A precious baby that looked just like her mama, his favorite person the world. Heâs just as smitten as she is, already seeing a family unfold with you but he knows not to get ahead of himself.
âOf course, sweetheartâ He smiles, melting as she grabs his metal arm, dragging him into the house so he can join her tea party.Â
âLook everyone, Prince Charming is here!â She plops a tiny tiara on his head for a crown and proceeds to pour him some juice in a tiny tea cup, serving the rest of her bears and dolls immediately after. You never actually end up going out for ice cream because your daughter had no interest in leaving her tea party with the special guest of honor present.Â
By the time night rolled around and the movie was finished, your little one was nuzzled into between the both of you, sleepily rubbing her eyes when she felt Bucky stir as he got up to leave. She tugged at his metal arm once again, looking up at him with doe eyes,Â
âCome back again pease!!âÂ
You couldn't help but smile at the way your daughter clings onto him, Bucky equally in love with the way she fit in his arms as he said goodnight. You tuck her into bed soon after, all the antics for the day tiring her out more than usual. You give her a quick peck, turning the light off before going to bed.Â
âMommy?â
âYes bubbaâ
âWill Prince Charming be back?âÂ
You giggled at her hopeful little voice, mischievously fidgeting with her blanket.Â
âDo you want him to come back?âÂ
âI like himâ She nodded with a sleepy smile.Â
âMe too baby, me tooâÂ

Has Sweet Pea's mom called Bucky? đĽş
Not yet, nonnie.
Heart and Home
Pairing: Mob!Bucky Barnes x Single Mom!Reader
Summary: You reflect on the love you have for your daughter and your loneliness.
Word Count: Over 1.2k
Warnings: Fluff, light angst, loneliness, single parenting, daughter nicknamed Sweet Pea, thinking about Bucky Barnes (he's a warning, okay?)
A/N: Follow up to Moving in Slow Motion. â¤ď¸ Not beta read and written on my phone, so any and all mistakes are my own. Please follow @navybrat817-sideblog for new fics and notifications. Comments, reblogs, feedback are loved and appreciated!
Bucky hadnât left your mind since the museum. How could you not think about him? The man looked like heâd been ripped right out of one of those romance novels you liked to curl up with once your daughter fell asleep. Tall and built, movie star handsome, a smile that made your heart stop. Not only that, he made your little girl smile. That meant the world because she was your world.
But that didnât mean anything was going to happen and it was way too soon to think it would.
âDinnerâs almost ready!â You called out.
âOkay, Mama!â
You glanced at your phone as you grabbed a couple of plates, wondering when and if you should call Bucky. You couldnât remember the last time someone offered their phone number once knowing you had a kid. It was a dealbreaker for some. Not to mention, you had been out of the dating game for some time and you werenât even sure what was an acceptable period of time to call or not call.
âHe isnât thinking about me,â you muttered, loading up the plates once everything was ready. A man like Bucky probably had a line out the door of people who wanted to date him. Beyond his looks, there was something mysterious about him. Maybe even dangerous. You couldnât put your finger on why you felt that way. It likely had something to do with those books you couldnât stop yourself from reading and it was bleeding into reality.
âDinner is served!â You smiled as you set the food on the small dining room table. Your daughter was still in the living room, occupied with coloring at the coffee table. Your apartment wasnât large by any stretch of the imagination, but things like trinkets, snuggly throw pillows, and photos of you and your daughter helped make the place a cozy home. âI made dino nuggies.â
Her eyes widened as she looked up from her sheet. âDino nuggies!â Both of you laughed when she held her hands up and roared. She loved nuggets and dinosaurs. âOne more minute, please?â
You pretended to think about it. âOkay, one more minute,â you said, taking a seat to watch her. She grabbed another crayon and pursed her lips as she colored. It was an adorable expression of concentration. She mustâve picked it up from you since she didnât get it from her father.
You shut your eyes for a moment when her dadâs face shimmered in your mind. The two of you weren't together anymore and he wasn't part of your daughter's life either. He likely never would be since he wanted nothing to do with kids. It hurt some days. Not because you missed him, the man was never meant to be your forever partner. But how could anyone look at your daughter and not love her?
At the end of the day, the two of you were better off alone instead of forcing him to stick around. And you did your best to give her the love of two parents. But what would happen as she got older and wondered why her dad wasnât there? You would never regret having her, but what if you werenât enough for her? What then?
âWhat are you working on?â You asked, pulling yourself from those sad thoughts and concentrating on the present.
âThe museum!â She answered, scrutinizing the paper. She took her coloring very seriously. âFinished!â
âLetâs take a look,â you said, holding out your hand when she brought it over. It was the room at the museum where she built the roller coaster, full of wonder and energy. The bright colors jumped off the page, like the shade yellow reflecting her natural happiness. Maybe you were a little biased, but you thought her drawings were perfect. âWow! Beautiful, just like you.â
She giggled at the compliment. âYouâre beautiful, Mama. A queen!â
âI guess that makes you a princess then,â you smiled, booping her nose and getting another giggle out of her. âYou did a wonderful job drawing the roller coaster.â
She held her head high. She was so proud. âI did. And look! Thatâs you and me,â she said, pointing at two of the stick figures in front of it. âAnd thatâs Mr. Bucky!â
Your smile faltered as you looked at the third stick figure, the colors matching the outfit he wore along with a pair of blue eyes. Your finger traced it before you could stop yourself. She was adding him to drawings after only meeting him once? It shouldn't surprise you since she kept talking about him as you took her around the museum. âItâs a very nice drawing, Sweet Pea.â
âThanks, Mama.â She smiled, taking a seat and pulling her plate closer. âCan we send it to Mr. Bucky? Please?â
âThe nuggets may still be a little warm, so blow on them, please,â you warned, looking at the drawing again. The innocent look in her eyes made it hard to say no. âI donât think we can send it to him. Iâm sorry.â
She made an exaggerated show of blowing on the first before she took a bite, but the happiness from the meal faded quickly at your response. âHow come?â She asked sadly, her bottom lip sticking out in a pout she easily learned to perfect. âH-He liked my art.â
You reached over to rub her back when she hung her head, your comforting instinct coming out. âOh, I know Mr. Bucky liked your art. He really did. I just donât know where he lives, which is why I canât send it,â you replied gently, which was true. It didnât take the sad look off her face. âBut if we see him again, weâll be sure to ask if heâd like a drawing from you. Iâm sure heâd love it.â
You tried to emphasize the word âifâ since you didnât want to get her hopes up or have her get attached. You wouldn't get your hopes up either. Being cautiously optimistic was the way to go.
After a moment, she lifted her head and took another bite of her food. âOkay, Mama.â
You quietly dug in, knowing this wasn't the end of it. She had such a loving heart, so pure, and you wondered if she sensed your loneliness some days or if it rubbed off on her. You did your best not to let it show. She was a child who didn't need to carry any burden of your feelings.
âHow about after dinner you pick out a book for us to read together?â You suggested, giving her a tiny smile as she contemplated it. She still enjoyed having bedtime stories and youâd indulge that as long as she let you.
âAny book I want?â She smiled.
âAny book you want,â you promised.
As the two of you continued to eat, you glanced at the empty chair across from you with a heavy heart. Maybe one day it wouldn't be empty. Maybe a caring person would occupy the seat. Someone who would bring more love to your home. Until then, you would give Sweet Pea all the love she deserved.
And maybe youâd give Bucky a call once you were in bed.
Oh, Bucky is eagerly awaiting that phone call. And I just want to wrap them up in a hug. Love and thanks for reading! â¤ď¸

Opening the door to the apartment you shut it again, opening slowly before repeating the action a few more times, sighing in defeat that nothing had changed you took in the sight of the once cleaned apartment that now looked like a bomb had hit it.
Toys laid out on the floor, your daughters toy prams laying on their sides with the baby dolls hanging out of them, legos scattered around, broken crayons laid amongst the chaos.
âKids?â You called out as you removed your coat.
âOhâŚhi Y/n the kids are next doorâ Poppy your kidâs babysitter says as she pops her head around the corner.
âWith Ms Hopewell?â
âUm no the new guyâ.
Your heart stopped. The apartment next door had been empty since you and the kids moved in to your apartment two years ago, hearing that there was now a tenant living there didnât bother you what bothered you was that it was a man who was alone with your children whilst the babysitter was-
âWhat was that?â
âThey, um their next doorâ Poppy replies quickly.
âNo I got that bit but what I want to know is who just coughed?â
âI-itâs my boyfriend-â
Oh your day just kept getting better and better.
âGet out. Your sackedâ
âB-but Y-â
âNo. Tell him to put his shirt on and I want you both to leave my home. Nowâ
The regret of not listening to Marina the mum of your daughters friend who had warned you not to hire the sixteen year old babysitter was hitting full force but at the time you was desperate and in need of a babysitter so you could work. Now you felt foolish that you gave her the benefit of the doubt, just for her to think it was acceptable to bring her boyfriend who you did not know into your home and to allow your children to be next door with a complete stranger.
Not listening to Poppyâs excuses you told her one more time to leave as you went next door where you could now hear your childrenâs cheerful voices.
The front door to the apartment was open, calling out for your kids where you heard them running towards you.
âMommaâ
âWhat the hell do you think you two are doing? How many times have I told you not to talk to strangers.â You scolded despite seeing them okay and well.
âMr Bucky isnât a stranger mommaâ Cora your daughter says sheepishly.
âMamaâ Jasper your son - the youngest out of the two - laughs as he pulls on your shirt.
Before you could reply to either child you hear soft footsteps coming towards you.
âIâm sorry Maâam-â
âYou canât just let strange kids into your home-â
You cut yourself off when you look up. Not expecting a six foot, built like a brick wall yet looked soft oddly enough man. His bright blue eyes shined through the dimmed hallway, brown hair long enough to be pulled up in a bun that sat low on the back of his head, with a few strands of wavy hair framing his handsome face.
âMomma Mr Bucky has a black arm and itâs cold!â Cora giggled pointing at her left arm.
âCora!â You scolded, apology on the tip of your tongue before this Mr Bucky laughed.
âItâs true, I do have a black armâ And thatâs when you notice it.
âMomma guess how he lost it? Guess, momma guessâ Cora jumped around on the spot causing Jasper to do the same.
âI-umm Iâm not sure sweetieâ
âHe didnât eat his veggies and his arm fell off!â She laughed âhe told me and Jaspy that we have to eat all our veggies so it donât happen to usâ her eyes widened comically.
Looking up at the man who you assumed the worst of as he stood there with his arms crossed and a huge grin on his lips making his eyes crinkle.
âItâs true maâamâ
âMama kittyâ Jasper tugs on your shirt again, taking your eyes away from the man to your son who was pointing at a ball of white fluff as it came trotting over âname kitty mamaâ
âHer names Alpine-â Cora tries to correct.
âNo name kittyâ Jasper pouts causing you and the man to laugh.
âYouâre very right, her names kittyâ he smiles softly. âBy the way Iâm James, well everyone calls me Buckyâ He holds his right hand out for you to shake.
You tried to ignore the way his hand was warm, calloused yet soft, shaking his hand. âIâm Y/nâ.
âItâs nice to meet you. And listen Iâm really sorry that I had your kids in here, um they were outside in the hallway-â
âExcuse me?â
âT-they were outsideâ he points behind you âI had just came back from the store when I saw them, um Cora said that Poppy had a boy inside and they were told to play in the hallwayâ He winces as he scratches the back of his neck.
âItâs true momma. They were kissingâ you grimaced and the anger you felt for your now former babysitter increased.
âCora said you was at work and at the time I didnât see the harm in letting them in to my apartment b-but now I see I did the wro-â
âNo no no, I-thank you.â You cut him off, feeling slightly ashamed for overreacting.
âItâs okay, theyâre great kids.â
âThank you, I best get them back so I can feed them. Iâm sorry if they caused any problems for youâ you smiled, finally stand whilst picking Jasper up and placing him on your hip.
âThey didnât cause any problems, donât worry. Bye Mr Jasper bye Miss Coraâ
âBye bye Mr Bucky and Miss Alpineâ Cora waves already leaving.
Jasper just waves, his thumb sliding into his mouth.
âBye Buckyâ
âBye, oh um Y/n⌠I would wash the bedding, the bedroom closest to this wall if I was youâ He says grimacing as he knocks on the wall to his left.
Your bedroom.
âGreat. Just great, thanks for the tipâ. Giving him a tight lip smile you give him an awkward wave and walk back into your home.
âI-Iâm sorry Y/n please just give me another chanceâ Poppy begs.
âAbsolutely not. Now I want you to leaveâ
âBut I need this job Y/n pleaseâ
âYou told my children, the same children I pay you to look after, to go and play in the hallway so you could have sex in my bed! Oh donât look so shocked, I found the used condom on my floor - thanks for that. Now donât come backâ
âWi-will you give me a referen-â You slammed the door in her face.
The audacity of this girl.
âMama kittyâ Jasper catches your attention and sure enough thereâs Alpine walking around in a circle around your two year old.
âHow did she get in here?â All you got in response was Jasper sticking his tongue out out you. âLetâs get her back home yeah?â
Now here came the tricky part, did you pick her up? Or just open the door and pray to a higher power that she didnât run off?
You really hoped that she wouldnât run off as the thought of chasing after a cat exhausted you but picking up the cat wasnât your fan favourite either, from thirteen years old youâve had a fear of touching cats after the neighbours tabby dug his claws into your skin and clung on for dear life.
âOkay bubba I need you not to move, Iâll be right back okayâ great parenting leaving a two year old home alone, you scold yourself. Running out of the door and rapidly knocking on Buckyâs.
âHey, Y/n are you okay?â
âAlpines in my apartment and Iâm scared to touch cats so⌠come get herâ
âShit. Iâm sorry I donât know how I missed her getting out-wait did you just say youâre scared to touch them?â
Rolling your eyes as he chuckles âdonât laugh itâs a real phobiaâ
That has him practically crying. âSo youâre afraid of cats?â
âNo, I just donât like touching them unless theyâre asleep-stop laughing!â
âIâm sorry doll- hi Mr Jasper, come on missy youâre scaring our neighbourâ he laughs as he bends down to pick up the cotton ball of fluff.
âIâm not scared of her!â
âWhatever you say doll, whatever you sayâ
âItâs-â
âA real phobia I knowâ winking at you âwhereâs Miss Cora?â
âAt her friends for a sleepover so itâs just me and little man tonightâ even though your daughter is two blocks away, you couldnât help but miss her and mainly worry despite knowing sheâs safe.
âThat sounds like fun, Iâll see youâ
And just as heâs about to cross over the threshold Jasper interrupts him. âKitty stayâ
âNo baby kitty has to go home nowâ
âNo kitty stay mamaâ
âNot tonight babyâ
Here comes the waterworks in 3âŚ2âŚ1âŚ
Jasper burst into a fit of tears, throwing himself backwards kicking his little arms and legs out.
âKitty stayâ he stutters, it breaks your heart hearing him cry like that.
âMa-maybe if itâs okay with you Alpine can stay for a bit? I donât mind honestly and sheâs great with kidsâ Bucky offers and at his words Jaspers tears start to cease.
âYeah umm yeah thatâs okay with meâ you say smiling lightly at Bucky.
âBehave missyâ he tells the cat whoâs trying to jump out of his arms, and once sheâs free she runs over to Jasper rubbing herself all over him that he starts giggle at her fur tickling him.
âOnce heâs asleep just knock on the wall and Iâll come and get her-â
âStayâ you blurt out instantly feeling the heat warm your cheeks âth-thatâs if you donât have anything better to-â
âI would love toâ he smiles.
And so Bucky and Alpine join you and Jasper for dinner and some cartoons.
You was sitting next to Bucky on the couch when he taps your shoulder and nods his head in the direction of Jasper and Alpine, you couldnât help but take your phone out and taking a picture of the two cuddled up together, fast asleep.
Months had passed before you had even realised. Bucky and Alpine spent most of their days now at your apartment, which you couldnât complain as you now had another adult to talk to.
You had just left to go and get something from the store leaving Bucky alone with the kids. Jasper was playing with his toys with Alpine whilst Bucky and Cora was sat on the couch together.
Everything was good until.
âMomma doesnât have a boyfriendâ Cora told Bucky causing him to choke on his drink.
âOhâŚâ
âDo you want to be mommaâs boyfriend?â
âI erm Iâm not sure why?â
âMomma will make you happy, she makes me and Jaspy happy and she makes us dino nuggies for dinner and she reads us bedtime stories and makes sure thereâs no monsters under the bedâ
âReally?â
âYep she would do that for you too if you was her boyfriendâ the six year old put her hand on Buckyâs left arm as she told him.
âIâm not sure CoraâŚâ
âWhy not? Do you not like my momma?â
âI do sweetheart but itâs just a little bit more complicated than thatâ
âMomma said she likes you, I asked her. You can make her happy and sheâll make you happy. I donât want momma to cry anymoreâ
âWhat do you mean?â
âShe cries at night when sheâs in bed but she doesnât know that I know. If you be her boyfriend she wonât cry anymoreâ
Bucky knows Y/n cries at night, due to his enhanced hearing he can hear her. It pains him to hear her sobs until sheâs eventually cried herself to sleep.
The knowledge that Cora knows it happens too makes his heart hurt. Sheâs six years old and all she wants is her momma to be happy even going as far to ask him - the ex brainwashed assassin whoâs over a hundred years old - for help.
And the way sheâs looking at him doesnât help.
âSo⌠will you think about it?â Cora asks when she doesnât receive a response.
âYeah Iâll think about itâ
Five minutes go by.
âHave you thought about it?â
âNot yetâ
âOkayâ
Another five minutes go by.
âNow?â
âStill thinking Coraâ
Jumping up from the couch when he hears the door come open he jogs over to help you with the shopping.
âHey, thanks youâre a lifesaverâ sighing in relief as the bags are released from your arms.
âNo problemâ
âDid they behave?â
âYeah, well apart from Miss Coraâ he winks at Cora as she comes over.
âNo momma it was Mr Bucky that was naughtyâ
âWhy what did he do?â
âHe ate all the cookies and didnât let me have oneâ she pouts.
You had to stifle the laugh from coming out as Buckyâs eyes widen and jaw dropped open, gasping dramatically at the claims.
âY/n it was the other way round! I swearâ
âNo it wasnât momma I have witnessesâ holding her one finger up to you she runs back into the living room to get the witnesses. Bucky stands there with his arms crossed and lightly tapping his foot.
âThey saw it happenâ laying her dolls down on the counter she looks at you then at Bucky with a smug smile.
âY/n whatever they say itâs a lie!â
That time you couldnât hold the laughter in any more.
âYou twoâŚâ shaking your head.
Seeing a grown man arguing with a six year old and her toys about them being liars makes you laugh even more.
Later that evening Cora says goodnight to Bucky and Alpine, you hear her ask him âhave you thought about it now?â Causing your eyebrows to furrow.
Walking him to the door you ask âwhat was Cory talking about before she went to bed?â
âOh nothing doll, see you tomorrowâ.
You was in the kitchen cooking dinner when the knock at the door had Cora running straight towards it.
âHi Mr Bucky hi Alpineâ
âHello Miss Coraâ
âIâm a princess todayâ
âI see, hi Princess Coraâ he chuckled.
âHello, would you like to come into my castle?â
âYes please, thank youâ
Their footsteps got closer towards you, turning round you saw Alpine run past jumping straight on to the couch where Jasper was sitting.
âMomma Mr Buckyâs hereâ she told you before going back to the living room.
âHi Buckyâ
âHey, so Coraâs a princess today then?â
âYep. Thatâs her fourth dress change since she came home from schoolâ
Chuckling as he sits down on the stool he watches you move around the small kitchen. âDo you need any help?â
âOh no Iâm fine, how was work?â You asked.
âIt was fine just the usual, Sam being a pain in my backsideâ
âFair enoughâ you laughed âhey um Bucky I need to ask a huge favour, you can say no okay so donât fee-â
âDoll ask meâ
âRemember you can say no, okay? But I have to work tomorrow as someoneâs off ill and itâs Saturday so I was wondering if itâs no issue for you to look after the kids for me?â
He doesnât even think about his answer as he answers âof course, just tell me when I should come overâ
âReally? Oh Bucky youâre a lifesaver, Iâll have to pay you next week if thatâs okay?â
âNo absolutely not Y/n, Iâm not going to take money off youâ
âBut I canât ask you to look after them for freeâ
âYour not, Iâm not taking money off you doll and thatâs finalâ
He gets up off the stool and moves into the living room, you hear him tell the kids that theyâll be spending the day with him and the kids cheering.
Ever since you sacked Poppy youâve been struggling, luckily your boss has been understanding that you need to work certain hours however the hours you now work is way less then what you use to, tomorrow will be the day you work longer that five hours.
Ms Hopewell from next door normally looks after Jasper but since it was the weekend she didnât need to, plus her daughter was taking her out for the day-
âShit-fuck goddamnit!â So lost in your thoughts you didnât realise how close the knife was to your finger that was until you felt the sharp pain and warm sensation of blood trickling down your hand.
âShi-shoot Y/n are you okay?â Bucky comes running over stopping when he see the blood.
âIâm fine-is it suppose to hurt this much? It really hurtsâ
âDoll we need to get you to the hospitalâ
âNo, no itâs fine Iâll put a plaster on it-can you hand me the first aid kit from the cabinetâ
âY/n you need stitches-â He attempts
âI canât. I donât have insurance anymoreâ you mutter.
âWhat?â
âThe kids have but I had to give mine up so I could have insurance for Jasper. I canât afford to pay the hospital bill Buckyâ
Youâve never been ashamed of the fact that you couldnât afford treatment for yourself it was just one of those things, your kids or you - it was an easy choice. Thereâs only ever been one time that you slightly regretted that decision and thatâs when you broke your ankle just before you moved into the apartment, it had healed fully after nearly a year of being broken and the only time it affects you is in the winter or when you stood up to fast.
You knew he was right about needing to get stitches as you was pretty sure you could see the bone - you couldnât - but you couldnât help the shame that crept into your veins admitting it to Bucky that you couldnât afford to pay for said stitches. The thought of getting another letter with big bold red letters telling you that you was in debt made your heart pang with fear.
Despite the pain in your finger and the cramp that was starting to seep into your hand you was still not going to go to the hospital.
âIâll pay for it doll. Come on letâs get it sor-â
âNo absolutely not. Iâm not your charity case Bucky, just pass the first aid kit over and Iâll put a plaster onâ You snapped. Instantly regretting it when you see Buckyâs eyes go sad.
âIâm not saying you are Y/n but a plaster isnât going to do anything doll, I honestly donât mind paying please just⌠just let me help you outâ
âI canât Bucky okay, I just canât ask you to do that for me.â
âOkay. Okay how about I take you to my work place we have a doct-â
âWhat part of I canât afford it donât you understand?â
âSheâll do it for free! If you could stop interrupting me for one second. Dr Cho will do it and she wonât charge I promise.â
Nibbling on your lip as blood splashed down the counter you started to shake your head.
âI can ring her now and ask her to come here if you want?â
âI-will she?â
âOf course give me a minuteâ he steps away to ring the doctor. âSheâs on her wayâ he comes closer and helps you wrap your hand in the tea towel.
âBucky, Iâm really sorry for snapping I-â
âY/n itâs fine okay. Choâs on her way sheâs nice and sheâll fix your fingerâ
âMomma what happened?â Cora goes pale at the sight of blood.
âMomma had a bit of an accident Princess Cora, can you go back to Mr Jasper and Alpine for me?â Bucky says before you had the chance.
âOkay but is momma okay?â
âYes sweetheart she is, donât worryâ
Cora looks at you waiting for confirmation and when she gets a smile and a nod she runs back to her brother and Alpine.
âThank you Buck-shit itâs really stingingâ
âI know, she should be her-â the knock at the door cuts him off, just before he walks off he kisses you on your forehead.
Hearing him talk to the doctor your fingers lightly grazed the part where he had kissed, a small shy smile made its way on your lips.
âCho this is Y/n, Y/n this is Choâ
âHi itâs a pleasure to meet you, James said that youâve injured your finger?â
âHi, and yeah I-I wasnât looking at what I was doing and sliced myselfâ awkwardly lifting your hand up that now had dry blood on your arm.
âHi Miss who are you?â Cora comes over with her hand on her hip.
âHello Iâm Helenâ
âHello Helen Iâm Princess Cora, thatâs momma, Mr Bucky and over there is Jasper and Alpineâ
Helen curtsyâs at Cora making the six year old giggle âItâs nice to meet your family Princess Coraâ
The implication that Bucky was apart of your family didnât slip your notice and by the look of Buckyâs face it didnât him either, neither one of you said anything to correct her though.
Cora walks off once again and Helen turns her attention back to you, unwrapping the towel she turned to Bucky telling him what she needed out of her medical bag.
With him distracted you looked at Helen âI-I canât pay you so itâs okay just to put a plaster on it, itâll be fine in a few daysâ
âDonât be silly Iâm not charging youâ she says softly. âThank you James, Y/n this might hurt but Iâll try and be as gentle as I canâ
It was weird because it hurt until Bucky held your other hand. Strange.
âAll done, if itâs easier for you Iâll come back here in a few weeks to remove the stitchesâ
You thank her once again as Bucky walks her to the door.Â
âYou okay?â
âYeah Iâm okay. Bucky I really am so-â
His lips cut you off. Said lips being attached to yours.
âStop apologising, itâs my turn now - Y/n Iâm really sorry for thatâ he says once heâs pulled away.
âDid you not like it? Was it bad?â You panic, it was your first kiss in over two years to you it was magical but not to him as he apologising.
âGod no doll, to both questions. Itâs just I should have asked first-why are you smiling like that?â
âC-can I have another one?â
Bucky chuckles just as his lips gently touch yours again.
A week after nearly chopping your finger off and having not one, not two but three kisses with Bucky, he knocked on the door and let himself in like you told him to do.
âHi Buckâ
âHey doll, whereâs my two favourite people in the world at?â Pressing a kiss to your temple.
âJaspers down for a nap and Coraâs in her room, Buck sheâs upsetâ
âWhy? Whoâs hurt her?â
âOne of the girls in her class is having a sleepover and invited all the other girls in the class, apart from Coryâ
Your heart breaking again remembering how sad she looked coming out of school, normally she was all smiles and talking a thousand miles per hour, filling you in on what she had done that day but not today. It wasnât until you got home where she finally broke down in tears.
âWhen?â
âTonight, apparently all the other girls knew and was told not to tell Coraâ
âIs her friend going?â
âAbbie? No sheâs in a different class so sheâs hasnât been invited eitherâ
âGive me 20 minutes and Iâll be backâ
âWhere are you going?â
âItâs a surprise dollâ he winks before kissing you and leaving.
And sure enough twenty minutes later he was walking back through the door. This time he had two bags in his hands.
âBucky?â
âMe, you and the kids are having our own sleep over and itâs going to be way better than that snobby-â
âSheâs six Buckyâ
âAnd? She didnât invite the best girl to her sleep over so there for⌠sheâs snobbyâ
Shaking your head you couldnât help but smile as he pulled different snacks and drinks out of the bag onto the coffee table.
âSo Iâm thinking that weâll make a pillow fort, watch movies and eat snacks and Iâll order us a pizza from Coraâs favourite place?â
Every fibre in your being was screaming at you just say those three words but you couldnât, not yet at least. You and Bucky wasnât even dating all you did was share a few kisses, itâll be weird to blurt out them words.
âMr Bucky youâre hereâ Cora says coming out of her bedroom.
âIâm here sweetheart, did your momma not tell you what was happening tonight?â
âNo, whatâs happening?â
âUs four are having a sleepoverâ
âReally?â She squeals and runs into Bucky who lifts her up. âThank you thank you! This is the best day ever!â
You hear Jasper call out for you from his room so you leave Bucky and Cora alone. Picking Jasper up from his bed and walk in to the living room where the two year old says something that stops not only you in your tracks but Bucky and Cora.
âDadaâ
His little arms reaching out to the only man in the room. Buckyâs eyes bounce from you then to Jasper, then to you. You can see it in his eyes that heâs begging you to tell him what to do but you canât, youâre completely frozen.
âBuckyâ he says slowly as to make Jasper understand but all he receives is-
âDadaâ Jasper giggles and repeats the word a few more times.
Bucky finally puts Cora down and slowly makes his way over to you two and when heâs just in reach Jaspers jumped out of your arms and into Buckyâs. As soon as Bucky has hold of him you walk out of the room going straight to your bedroom. Shutting the door you burst out crying.
âDoll? Iâm coming in okay?â It had been close to ten minutes since you had walked out. âOh sweetheart, Iâm so sorryâ
âWhy are you sorry for?â Wiping your tears he pulls you into his chest.
âI tried correcting him but he just wouldnât stop, even Cora told him not toâ
âDid she say anything to you? About their father I mean.â
âNo she just looked really upset.â
âHe erm, he-â
âY/n you donât have to tell me, itâs okayâ
âNo no I want to, I trust you. He left, well he kicked me and Cora out when I was four months pregnant. Everything was fine that morning when we woke up, he went to work I stayed at home and when I was putting his dinner out he came home with an envelope in his hands and threw it on the table, he walked into Coraâs bedroom walked out with a huge bag a few minutes later then did the same with our roomâ wiping the fresh tears that had fallen, you hadnât spoken about that day to anyone - not even your family.
âHe told me to open the letter so I did an-and inside was paper, right. When I read it, it said that he had given up his rights to Cora and the unborn baby. I asked him why he was doing this and he told me I ruined his life when Cora was born and I was doing it again with the new baby, said he wanted to live his life without being tied down. Kicked me and a crying three year old out, at first I thought he had been cheating on me but it turns out he wasnât, there was no one on the side he just wanted to live his lifeâ
Bucky was practically shaking, you could feel the anger coming from him.
âI found out a few months later that all of our friends knew what he was doing, promised him that they would keep his secret and that he started the process when I was a few weeks along. Everyday he told me and Cory he loved us, spoke to the bump saying he couldnât wait to meet them all while he and everyone around us knew what he was doing.â
âY/n⌠doll Iâm so sorryâ
âWhy itâs not your fault, you know Cory never even mentioned him after it happened not once, I thought she would of because she was such a daddyâs girl three nearly four years old and she knew, she knew he didnât want her anymore so she never asked when she was going to see him or called out for him during the night. If he had just told me he didnât want me anymore that I would have been okay with bu-but to not want anything to do with his kids? It didnât make sense to meâ
âHas he even been in contact with you since?â
âNo. I got a phone call once from his friend who told me that he was really struggling to sell the house and somehow it was my faultâ
âHow was it your fault?â
âGod knows, he started rambling off then started calling me names when he heard Ms Hopewellâs son talking in the background, said I had moved on pretty quick when I hadnât. He was there helping me fix up my bed after his mum found out I was sleeping on the floorâ
âDoll-â
âDonât apologise again please Bucky, I got through it Iâm fine now. I think hearing Jasper call you dada made unwanted emotions come up you know? Youâve obviously realised that he doesnât speak much even at two thereâs only a few words he can say, I donât know where I went wrong with that but Iâve tried, Iâve tried teaching him other words but he just donât.â
âYou didnât do anything wrong Y/n you are an incredible mum, those two kids out there are the most sweetest loving people. Jasper will start talking soon, I just know itâ
You tried, you really did.
âI love youâ
Oh the silence was killing you.
âI love you tooâ he smiled softly.
He leant in for a kiss when-
âIs Bucky our new daddy?â
âNot yet sweetheartâ not yet played in your mind over and over even as he stands up winking at you and taking Coras hand in his and walks back to the living room.
That night after all the excitement needed to come to an end all four of you climbed into your bed. Cora tucked snuggly in your arms, Jasper in Buckyâs, Buckyâs left arm over your waist pulling all three of you closer to him. Alpine slept curled up in a ball at the bottom.
For the first time in just over two years you went to sleep dried faced and peacefully.
And unbeknownst to you, it was the first time in a very very long time that Bucky only had happy dreams as he slept.
It had been a month since the sleepover and confession, within that month Bucky had practically moved in. Alpine spent all her time with Cora and Jasper, sleeping with Jasper at night.
Bucky had to go on a work trip, heâd been gone for just over two weeks now and to be truthful you was missing him even if you did speak to him everyday, him ringing every night to say goodnight to the kids and speaking to you for a few minutes before he had to leave.
It was Wednesday afternoon and you couldnât stop worrying when Bucky hadnât called you the night before or that day. As you was cleaning the apartment the knock at the door made you jump. Cora went to jump up and answer it but since you knew it wasnât Bucky you told her to stop receiving a frown in response.
Answering the door you froze.
âHi, are you Y/n?â Nodding your head at the man he smiled. âHi Iâm-â
âMomma itâs Captain America!â Cora squealed from behind you.
Turning his attention from you to Cora he smiled softly âhello you must be Miss Cora, Buckyâs told me all about youâ
âYou know Mr Bucky? Momma he knows Buckyâ
âI-I know sweetieâ your eyes still trained on the blonde âwould you like to come in?â
âThank youâ
Pulling Cora closer to you, you watched as Steve walked into your home. You couldnât put your finger on it but for some reason you didnât like the feeling you had in your stomach. Steve walked into the living room where Jasper and Alpine was.
âCora take Jasper and Alpine into your room pleaseâ
âWhy momma?â
âJust do as I sayâ
Cora listened and picked up her younger brother who had Alpine in his arms and walked into her bedroom, shutting the door behind her you let out a deep breath.
âHi, are you okay?â
âIâm fine, is Bucky alright?â
âYeah heâs fine, he asked me to come over and pick you guys up. Itâs better if he explainsâ
âWhere is he?â
âHeâs at the tower, I need you to pack some clothes and come with meâ
âFor how long?â
âEnough for a few daysâ
âWhatâs Buckyâs favourite book?â
âHuh?â
âWhatâs his favourite book?â You asked again with your arms crossed.
âThe Hobbit, why?â
âOkay, Iâll be right backâ
âWhy did you ask me that?â
âJust to see if it was really youâ Steveâs laugh made you smile as you walked into Coraâs room.
Once packed Steve stood there holding the bags in one hand and in the other Coraâs hand as they both stood watching with amused smiles as you struggled to get Alpine into the cat carrier that Bucky had brought over a few weeks earlier when you both took her to the vets.
After almost ten minutes of struggling all it took was Jasper to pick her up and place her inside.
Never in your life have you been more thankful for your two year old.
âBucky gave me his car keysâ giving Steve a questionable look, he smiled âhe said that he brought car seats for the kids and since we donât have any laying around the tower it would be better if I took his carâ
You didnât know that he had brought car seatsâŚ
âO-ohâ
You watched in awe as Steve strapped Cora into her seat that was princess themed easily, when he caught you staring at him âBucky and I practiced with Morgan, Pepper her mum helped us figure it out. Got to say weâre naturals nowâ he laughed.
âI honestly didnât know he was doing thisâ
âHe really likes you and these kids, donât tell him I told you this but heâs been reading books about kidâs development and stuff.â
âNo he hasnâtâŚâ you say as you put your seatbelt on.
âHe has. Thatâs how I found out about you guysâ
âI-Iâm-wow. I didnât knowâ
Steve chuckles at your shocked expression, âlike I said he really likes youâ
The rest of the drive was quiet between you and Steve, Cora asking the blonde a million of questions about everything and anything and him answering all of them with as much enthusiasm as she gave.
You didnât have very much time to stare in fascination at the huge tower as Steve pulled into the underground garage, the squeals from both Cora and Jasper had your attention going to where they were shouting, Bucky stood there with his hands deep in his pockets and a large smile on his face as the car pulled up to a stop, going straight to the back door where Jasper was sat.
âHey little manâ
âDada!â
âIâm here buddy, come on letâs get you out of this seat, yeahâ.
Steve had already gotten out and making his way to help Cora out of her seat.
âBucky itâs Captain America and heâs my friendâ she said making both men smile.
âIs he now? Am I still your friend?â
âOf course Bucky! Your my best friendâ
You had removed yourself from the car and made your way to get the bags out of the boot when Steveâs voice stopped you.
âIâll get them donât worryâ
âYouâve done enough-â
âNo honestly itâs fineâ
"Come on doll, he'll be fine plus everyone's dying to meet youâ Bucky says as he places Jasper further onto his hip.
"Are you sure Steve?"
"I'm sure, don't worry"
Reluctantly leaving Steve to grab the bags you take Bucky's free hand and hold onto Cora's, all four of you make your way into the large building.
"Doll, after I introduce you to the team you and I need to talkâ Bucky whispered in your ear making you nervous slightly.Â
âAh hereâs the Manchurian Candidateâs little family, welcome Iâm-â
âIron man!â Cora cut him off.
âYou know who I am then?â
âYes! You fly in the air and itâs so cool!â She says excitedly.
âI fly tooâ Sam Wilson laughs - Coraâs eyes go wide at seeing him.
âT-the Falcon! Momma look itâs the Falcon a-and Black Widow an-and Scarlet Witch! A-a-and momma itâs Thor!â She spoke so fast she started to stutter, her entire body shaking with excitement making everyone chuckle.
You all heard hurried footsteps and a voice speaking with a hint of panic come closer. âAre they here? Iâm sorry Iâm lateâ
The loud gasp had everyoneâs eyes snapping down to Cora - including yours and Buckyâs. âI-itâs Bruce! M-momma he-it-Bruce-Hulkâ she lets go of your hand and runs up to a very confused looking Bruce âIâm-your-your hulk! Youâre my favourite! I have so so so so so many toys of you donât I momma? I do Bruce!â Once again everyone chuckles at her, not that she pays any attention to them, too busy looking up at the man who sheâs pretended to be when sheâs playing.
âHi, you must be Cora?â Bruce says with a soft hue coating his cheeks.
Her eyes widen comically, turning to you slowly her chest rising and falling fast. âB-Bruce knows my name mo-mommaâ
âI know beautiful, just breathe okayâ
âCan I hug you please?â She asks politely and nearly squeals when he nods and crouches down to her level. âThis is the best day ever!â She declares whilst keeping her arms around Bruceâs neck.
Whilst the team was distracting the kids Bucky took your hand and led you both to his room. âI need to tell you something, and maybe ask you something.â
âOkay?â
âWhen I was in Wakanda Shuri promised me that if I ever wanted to go back I was welcome, and that I could live there, work there, have a life there and⌠and doll I want to retire, Iâm done with this life, Iâve been doing it for so long.â
âDo it.â You said after a few minutes of silence, the hopeful look in his eyes hurt your heart, and even though it meant that what ever you two were was now at an end and you would have to explain to the kids that they wouldnât see him or Alpine again, you couldnât find it in yourself to ask him not to go.
âWhat?â
âRetire, move to Wakanda and have an amazing life there.â You smiled softly at him. âYou deserve all the happiness in the world, you deserve to be free Bucky.â
âB-But thatâs the thing Y/n, I have you and the kids and I donât want to leave you three behind.â
âYou can always visit or we could visit you?â
Moving closer to you, taking your hands in his, he shakes his head. âNo doll, I donât think you understand. Iâm in love with you and I love your kids like theyâre my own and Iâm happier than I have ever been since meeting you three, I want to ask if you will move with me? If-if not I can stay here with you, I donât want to lose my familyâ
For the past year Bucky lived happily in Wakanda, true to her word Shuri welcomed him with open arms and even showed him a farm house that she got built just for him - right where his hut use to be. He had his own farm, his own sanctuary and he loved every single part of it.
Bucky would admit that he had missed New York, especially Steve and the little life he had for himself there but he knew he made the right decision by walking away from it all.
As he was walking towards his home some of the local children were playing with a football, all stopping their game to run over to him, all wanting a hug from the White Wolf as they still called him.
âDaddy!â
âAh, thereâs my little girl! How are you princess?â
âIâm okay, are we going home?â
âYou can stay out and play for a little bit? I donât think momma will be mad.â
âNo, I want to go home now.â Watching as she waves goodbye to her friends, she lifts her arms out for him to pick her up.
âYou are so heavy now.â
âNo Iâm not!â She giggles.
Walking through the gate and down the pathway Bucky opens the door, helping his little girl take her shoes off as well as his own, Alpine trots over to them giving them a welcome home meow.
âMomma weâre home!â
They both stand there hearing footsteps come closer to them. âDid you have fun Cory?â
âI did momma, whereâs Jaspy?â
âHeâs in the living room baby. Hey handsome.â
âHi beautiful.â
When Bucky asked if you would move to Wakanda with him, you was skeptical, itâs not that you didnât want to go but you had two children to think about. You asked Cora about it and she seemed happy about moving to a new place, Tony let Bucky take a jet for the four of you to fly out to see how the kids took to the place.
Coraâs jaw dropped wide open when she met Shuri. âA-A real princess!â She stuttered, you thought she was going to collapse the second Shuri opened her arms for the six year old to hug her. Cora instantly made friends with some of the children she met, and when she met the farm animals it was that moment she was sold on moving there.
Jasper seemed happy too, he was fascinated by the goats and wanted to touch each and every one of them. Bucky told you that Alpine now had competition.
After a few days in the beautiful land you came back to New York, the next day you sat the kids down and asked them if they wanted to stay - both shaking their heads- or go to Wakanda - both of them screaming âyesâ. A week later both yours and Buckyâs apartments were empty and ready for new people to call the places home.
âHow are my babies doing?â
âJasper and Alpine decided to wreck the play room.â You both chuckled. âAnd this little one has been very active today.â Buckyâs hands went straight to your growing bump, his eyes lighting up at feeling his third child move around in the love of his lifeâs stomach.
Five months ago you found out you were pregnant, and whilst you was happy you couldnât help but feel nervous about Buckyâs behaviour changing towards Cora and Jasper, when you told him he burst out crying and kept saying that he was going to be a dad again, he kissed you and your stomach. It wasnât just you that was scared but Cora was as well, Bucky promised that he would love all his children equally, later that night he promised you that nothing would change and that he is still Cora and Jaspers dad regardless.
âI love you and I love our perfect family.â

First Date
Pairing: tfatws Bucky Barnes x Single Mom! Reader
Ch. 2 of Blue is For Ben series | Masterlist | Ch. 1 | Ch. 3
Word count: 6.0k
Summary: Bucky wants to ask you out on a real first date, but what does that look like when you donât have anyone to watch your son?Â
Warnings: mild language, mentions of previous assholes reader has dated, more kide related media and games, I think thatâs all itâs pretty cute
AN: Okay⌠I know this took forever to get out, but I started writing one idea that takes place after this and had a hard time transitioning, so I started over and wrote this chapter instead đ If youâre waiting for something a little spicier, stay tuned, I promise itâs coming đ Thanks @deceiverofgodss for helping me through this, ily đ
âNO! Itâs gonna fall!â Your son screeched from the living room. And as you continued to chop up your taco meat in the pan, you heard a heavy thump on the ground and an excited giggle from the four-year-old.Â
Sometimes it was hard to believe that there was a hundred-year difference between the two of them. Benâs developing motor skills and small size gave him a slight disadvantage as he played his favorite Bluey game, and Bucky was far too invested in how high he could get their high score. Keepy Uppy experts, they called themselves, smacking a balloon this way and that trying to keep it off of the floor.Â
You werenât sure your downstairs neighbors would be as excited about it as they were. But it was beyond adorable, and you didnât have the heart to make them stop.Â
It hadnât taken long for Bucky Barnes to find a place for himself in your lives, and it had been far easier to get him through your door since that first night he came over for dinner. It started with dinners here and there until he was almost expected at the table each night. Ben wanting to show off his school projects had turned into after-school play dates, which then became a demanding four-year-old and a super soldier on call, ready to be at your doorstep in a moment's notice.Â
One of those first few afternoons you had half a mind to apologize, to tell him he was allowed to tell Ben ânoâ and do his own thing. But he walked in with a sweet smile and soft touches, greeting Ben with equal enthusiasm. Before you could even get it out, Bucky made sure you knew that he was exactly where he wanted to be.Â
When it was just the two of you, Ben would often tell you that Bucky was his best friend. And after you put him to bed, you felt like a schoolgirl with a crush when Buckyâs nightly text messages came in. âBedtime went okay?â translated to itâs my turn to talk to you, which never failed to bring a giddy smile to your face.Â
âMAMA!â You snapped your head up in Benâs direction, seeing the blue balloon floating across the counter that divided your kitchen and your living room. Glancing at Bucky, he gave you a wink as his eyes danced between you and the balloon.Â
With both boys looking at you with anticipation, how could you deny them?
Resting your spatula against the pan, you scurried to the counter and got up on your toes, leaning across it to smack the balloon back into the living room where Ben bounced over to it. You watched them for a few moments, smiling to yourself as you watched the brick wall of a man play so sweetly with Ben, complete with goofy faces and exaggerated movements just to make him laugh.Â
That shouldnât have been all it took to make you absolutely head over heels for him. And yet you had to physically make yourself look away and focus on cooking dinner to avoid watching him with heart eyes. Logically, watching a man play well with your four-year-old shouldnât have been the root of your affections⌠but it was kind of hard for it to be anything else when Ben was always with you.Â
âHey, we kept it up twenty-four times, thatâs pretty good!â Bucky reasoned from the living room, alerting you to the fact that their game of Keepy Uppy had ended.Â
âLetâs do it again! Weâll really beat the high score this time,â Ben said enthusiastically, and Bucky gave a deep chuckle.Â
âHow about you start this round without me? See how far you can get by yourself, okay? Iâll be back in a sec,â he reasoned, leaving the four-year-old to count to himself.Â
Before you could process that he was coming to see you, one of Buckyâs large hands smoothed over the middle of your back. Your body instinctively leaned into his touch, and you tried to cover it up by turning to meet his gaze, finding him leaning against the counter beside you with a cocked brow.Â
âHey sugar, come here often?â He teased, but it still brought a sheepish smile to your face as his deep voice lilted in all the right places.Â
âOnly every day of my life,â you retorted, a boyish grin appearing on his face.Â
âCan I help you with anything?â He asked gently.Â
âI mean⌠you could stir the beans if you want. I thought you were playing with Ben?âÂ
âAnd now Iâm talking to you,â he winked at you, removing his hand from your back so he could tend to the other pot simmering on the stove. You tried to ignore how much you missed the feeling. âHeâll be fine, Iâll go back out there in a few minutes.â
âMmm, okay⌠so what do you want?â You shot playfully, and he gave you a confused look. âIâm smarter than that, James. You have a question you want me to answer.â He looked like a deer caught in the headlights.Â
âI- well, not because I donât want to spend time with you,â he quickly defended himself, and you couldnât help the laugh that bubbled out of you. âItâs- câmon, we were playing keepy uppy, you canât expect me to turn that down,â he argued, now laughing with you.Â
âBut you do have a question for me?â He nodded in defeat.Â
âI was just wondering⌠Do you have someone you trust to watch Ben?âÂ
Oh.Â
That question.Â
The one that, with men you had entertained in the past, had meant they were done playing family man, that they wanted Ben to be someone elseâs problem so they could get you alone. It was always pitched to you like it was some kind of fantasy of yours, like they were doing you this big favor by giving you a reason not to be Mom. As if that was ever something you wanted to escape.Â
It usually meant the end of whatever short-lived flirtationship you had allowed. They would show their true colors, turning into ugly versions of themselves when denied what they were really after. Your walls would go back up, you would keep your baby close to your chest, and you would never hear from them again.Â
But Bucky was nothing like any of those men. He couldnât be farther from them.Â
âI uh⌠No, I donât,â you started shyly, not very good at hiding how his question had caught you off guard. But when you watched his expression shift, it was soft, and there was no leap to a defense. He was different. âIâve been working from home since Ben was born, and I only went back to the office because he started going to school. Other than friends here and thereâŚâ You shrugged and gave a quiet shake of your head. âWhy do you ask?â
âWellâŚâ he started, taking a deep breath before he looked back at you, still effortlessly reducing you to a puddle with one look despite his evident nerves. âI was thinking of asking you out on a date.âÂ
It was annoying what that one sentence did to you.Â
âFigured Iâd do this right, take you out to dinner and make it a real first date. Just for one night.âÂ
Just for one night⌠youâd never heard that one before.Â
âI can.â What were you saying? âI can find someone. Just for a few hours, right? Iâm sure there are a few sitters in the building. I can make it work.âÂ
What were you saying?Â
It burned coming up out of your throat. Sure, Ben was four years old, he was plenty old enough to be left under someone elseâs supervision. But he was all you had. And itâs not like you required much from a potential sitter, keeping him safe and happy was all you really cared about. But it was so hard to let go of him, and far easier to just reschedule things for another time. Now you were agreeing to hand your baby away because a pair of pretty blue eyes said he wanted to treat you to a night out.Â
And you wanted it.Â
Before you could take it back, even before the rush of mom guilt started to flood in, Bucky was already swooping in to rescue you from your spiraling thoughts.
âHang on, donât go pawning him off on someone you donât trust, youâre gonna stress me out,â he assured you, his hands coming up to rub the sides of your arms soothingly, his face completely serious. âI just wanted to know if you already had someone, not for you to go find one.âÂ
The relief that flooded your body was more satisfying than you could have ever imagined. And somehow there was still room to be disappointed in what you lost. The idea of sitting at a table in a nice restaurant and being able to talk, really talk without the fear of what little ears could hearâŚÂ
With Bucky, it sounded wonderful.Â
âI still want to take you out on a date,â he told you, bringing you out of your thoughts as if he could read them. You smiled sheepishly and shook your head.Â
âAnd how do you think thatâs gonna work, Buck?â You laughed, amused by the image of you and Bucky in a fancy dining room joined by a booster seat and a plate of chicken nuggets. âJust give me a little time to conduct interviews like a neurotic mom, Iâll find someone heâll be okay with.â
âNah, weâll take him with us,â He grinned, patting your arms before he pushed off of the counter to peek out into the living room. âPsstâŚ. Ben⌠câmere.â You watched in intrigue as your son quickly abandoned the balloon he was tossing into the air to toddle over to the super soldier, launching himself into Buckyâs arms as the tall man kneeled down. Â
âWhat do you think about me taking you and your mom to the park on Saturday?â he offered, and your son immediately lit up.Â
âIs today Saturday?â You and Bucky shared a look.Â
âNo buddy, today is Thursday. Saturday is on the weekend when you donât go to school.â Ben contemplated this for a moment before he replied.Â
âWhy?â He asked, his arms still wrapped around Buckyâs shoulders. You couldnât help but giggle, watching Bucky try not to laugh as he recalibrated, Benâs responses clearly not having matched the idea in his head.Â
âWell⌠so we can all spend some time together. Weâll go get hot dogs, and Iâll take you guys to the park. And maybe Iâll treat you guys toâŚâ Bucky hesitated, taking a quick glance at you as he considered his next words. âMaybe Iâll get us a treat afterward. Howâs that sound?âÂ
âGood!â Ben said enthusiastically, already starting to climb around the super soldier like a jungle gym. âBucky?âÂ
âYeah, buddy?âÂ
âCan tomorrow be Saturday?â Buckyâs face softened as he helped Ben climb up around his back. Seeing Ben so excited, you couldnât help your own heart melting a little bit. You could compromise.Â
âBen, honey,â you started, and Benâs face appeared under Buckyâs bicep as he hung off of the outstretched vibranium arm like a monkey. âWhy donât you ask Bucky if he wants to go tomorrow after school?âÂ
You watched him struggle to climb around Buckyâs arm, the human playground as patient as ever while he watched â and helped â in amusement. And he scrunched his nose when Ben put his mouth to Buckyâs ear, much better at keeping himself from flinching away from Benâs ticklish whispers than you were.Â
And then Bucky effortlessly grabbed the child and twisted him around, giggling the whole way, to whisper his response in Benâs ear. When he backed away, the two boys shared a look, nodding in agreement. Thick as thieves⌠Bucky nodded his head towards you, getting Ben to finally loop you into the plan.Â
âBucky sayed yes! He sayed itâs a date,â he relayed excitedly, and then did his best to wink with only one of his eyes. He almost had it, too.Â
âThen tomorrow it is,â you said sweetly, and this time Bucky was the one shooting you a wink as he got up from his knees.Â
âKeepy Uppy! Come on, letâs go!â Ben pleaded, no longer interested in dragging on these grown-up details, and pulling on Buckyâs hand with all his strength. Which, of course, didnât make a difference.Â
âHold on, kiddo, let me finish talking to your Mama,â he laughed, and Ben groaned as he returned to the living room to play by himself. You kept yourself propped up against the counter as Bucky approached you, confident that your weakened knees needed another moment to be able to support you.Â
âSorry, I didnât mean to rush you into anything,â you smiled, and he shook his head.Â
âIâve been trying to figure out how to ask you out for an embarrassingly long amount of time, tomorrow is perfectâ he offered, and you felt heat rush to your cheeks. âIâm just glad heâs so excited.âÂ
âMe too,â you sighed, glancing back out into the living room to see your son laid out on the edge of the couch as he tossed his balloon into the air. âSo, what treat did you change your mind about?â You asked with a grin.Â
âIt wasnât so much that I changed my mind? I just didnât think promising him ice cream ahead of time would end up working in our favor,â he explained with an exasperated expression, pulling a belly laugh out of you.Â
He was different.Â
âŚ
âAlright Iâve got one,â Bucky offered from his spot on the wooden bench next to you, the two of you sitting on the perimeter of the park taking turns scooping bites from the rest of Benâs cup of chocolate ice cream, which heâd ditched to play cafe with the other children and bring you the occasional fake ice cream.Â
âOh this should be good,â you teased, handing him the small cup as you finished your bite. After having gotten hot dogs and walked around the city, you had already crossed off the usual first date topics and found yourselves in this sort of game of twenty questions. The main difference is that you were trying to take advantage of your time without little ears. Well, not being in an enclosed space with little ears.Â
âWhatâs the worst date youâve ever been on?â he asked, and you contemplated your answer as you watched him scoop out his last bite â he could finish it off in one spoonful easily, but he only took half before he handed it back to you.Â
âOkay, this one wasnât exactly terrible, but just weird,â you started, and Bucky chuckled as you finished off the sweet treat and prepared to tell the story. âThis guy took me out to eat at a hole-in-the-wall pizza place. Literally, it was just a window on the side of the tiniest building Iâve ever seen.Â
âWe end up sitting to eat it in a park close by, and I start to think that the date can finally start. But then I look over and see him picking all his toppings off.â Bucky scrunched his nose, making you laugh as you kept explaining. âAfter heâd polished those off, he started peeling the cheese off too, just eating it in chunks.â
âAnd then he just ate the whole soggy crust by itself?â he asked incredulously. When you nodded, he closed his eyes and dropped his head into one of his hands, rubbing his face in what could only be described as despair.Â
âI lasted about halfway through the crust before I threw etiquette out the window, and asked him what the hell he was doing to that poor piece of pizza. He just laughed and told me heâd been eating it that way since he was a kid.âÂ
âPlease tell me you got up and left immediately,â he groaned, pulling a deep belly laugh from you as you watched him struggle to process your story.Â
You could have said that. That would be the normal thing to answer with, especially when talking about a different man on a first date.Â
âThat uh⌠that was actually Benâs dad.âÂ
Or just put it all out there. Thatâs⌠thatâs what you did. Way to make it awkward.Â
You werenât sure what kind of response you were expecting, but it certainly wasnât for him to look at you with his brows raised as if heâd just come to some profound discovery rather than irritation, or even surprise.Â
âSo thatâs why Ben eats pizza like thatâŚâÂ
âLike a weirdo? Apparently,â you finished, and Bucky chuckled to himself as he looked back out at the playground to check on the boy in question, and you admired his features as he did. âHeâs never met that man in his life, but I guess pizza preferences are genetic. He just came out of the womb ready to confuse anyone who has to see him tear into a pepperoni pizza.âÂ
âIâve told you Iâm from Brooklyn, right? New York?â He piped up, and you scrunched your face up in sympathy.
âIâm so sorry,â you laughed, an amused grin dancing on his face. âIt probably drives you crazy, doesnât it?âÂ
âA little bit of me dies inside each time I watch him do it,â he deadpanned, only encouraging more of your laughter. âYou should let me teach him how to eat it like a New Yorker.âÂ
âOh yeah? And which way is that?âÂ
âYou fold it! Down at the crust, that way you can eat it with one hand and keep walking,â he explained very passionately. Part of you wondered if he was exaggerating a little bit â his New York was a few decades behind the trends â but that was exactly how youâd seen him manhandle his slices last week.Â
âHis hands are too small for that!â You reminded him, giggling when he looked offended.Â
âSo we teach him now. Fix it before itâs too late, and then when heâs older we wonât have to worry about him eating pizza like a psychopath.âÂ
The second the words left his lips, you felt realization hit him.Â
There was still an amused grin on his face, but the implication behind his words still hung in the air, and you could tell he was weighing his options as he watched your face for any trace of a response to how many times he had said we, not to mention talk of still being around when Ben was a little older.Â
âI- sorry, I know I just broke a lot of first date rules in a row,â he settled on, attempting to be humorous, so you played along.Â
âWell, you fed my kid hot dogs and ice cream, and didnât bat an eye when I brought up the baby daddy, so I think we can throw those rules out the window.â Buckyâs nose scrunched up as he let out a boyish giggle, his cheeks turning pink at your reminder, and you hoped that he couldnât hear the way your heart sped up because of it.Â
âYeah? Just how many of those rules are we throwing out?â He asked smoothly, raising an eyebrow at you as he adjusted his spot on the bench, ending up just a little bit closer to you.Â
âThat depends on what youâre planning,â you retorted, unable to stop from giggling when he gave you a smug expression.Â
Your innocent laughter was quick to fade when his tongue peeked out to lick his lips in a way that should not have had as much of an effect on you as it did, finding his baby blues darting down to your lips before returning your gaze.Â
âYouâve got something, right hereâŚâ he husked, the arm that had been resting against the back of the park bench moving slyly to cup your cheek, his thumb brushing against the corner of your lips.Â
âHmmm really? Did I get ice cream on my face?â you managed as his face inched closer to yours, scanning your expression for any sign of rebuttal. Lucky for him, you were so giddy with anticipation that you may as well have had a green light on your forehead.Â
âMhm, you did,â he chuckled deeply, the gravel of his voice sending a shiver down your spine. âLet me get that for youâŚâÂ
âHow kind of you,â you whispered, earning you a bright smile as the tip of his nose brushed against yours, your eyelids fluttering shut as you anticipated his next move.Â
The moment Buckyâs lips met yours, you could have been easily convinced that the world around you had fallen away. You could count on one hand the number of times youâd been kissed like this in the last four years, but none of them even stood close.Â
It was pure. Fucking. Bliss.Â
His mouth molded onto yours like a puzzle piece, filling something inside of you that you hadnât realized was empty, curing some secret ache in your soul. The hand cupping your cheek slipped to the back of your neck to hold you just that much closer, angling his face to kiss you again, keeping you close to him. He touched you as if you were a delicate thing to be treasured while he kissed you like you were the very thing keeping him alive.Â
Bucky parted the kiss and held his lips away from yours by mere centimeters, an immediate wave of disappointment washing over you, wanting nothing more than for him to do it again. And again. And again.Â
âWhat do you think, is this one of those rules we can ignore?â he murmured, a playful grin on his face as you caught your breath.Â
âI think Iâll let it slide,â you teased right back, delighted by the huff of amusement you got from the muscular man in front of you, more than eager to let him lean back in to keep kissing youâŚ
âMAMA!âÂ
Honestly, you should have seen it coming.Â
Buckyâs lips had only just touched yours when Ben called for you from across the playground, and you could feel the super-soldier's wide grin spreading across his face as you scrunched your nose.Â
You put on your best attentive mother face as you turned to look at your son, finding him attempting to run up to you through the wood chips of the playground, his eyes trained on the handful of leaves in his hands.Â
âYes baby?â you asked as he arrived right at your feet, finally looking up at you and Bucky.Â
âI buyed you more ice cream!â Ben shoved his cupped hands up to your chin, waiting expectantly for you to relieve him of his delivery.Â
âThat was very sweet of you, Ben, thank you,â you sighed, doing your very best to keep the exasperation from your voice â Buckyâs chuckle telling you that you may not have succeeded â as you pretended to nibble on the leaves youâd been gifted. This was probably the fourth time youâd gone through his game of ice cream delivery, your date having received the other three.Â
When you emptied his âbowlâ by tossing his leaves to the side, just as you and Bucky had alternated doing for the past six handfuls, you assumed he would return back to the game of cafe so his new friends could âwash the dishes.â That was the pattern, thatâs how the game was supposed to go.Â
But if being a mom had taught you anything, it was that any assumption about your sonâs next move would prove to be wrong.Â
So of course, possibly the only time where you might have wanted him to keep playing his game and leave you to find your own entertainment on the park bench, he patted his hands on his pants and began climbing into your lap. Pushing limbs to the side, almost kicking Bucky in the abdomen, actually headbutting you in the abdomen⌠the whole nine yards.Â
âWhat uh⌠what are you doin, bud?â you asked once heâd settled himself in the pocket of your crossed legs, grabbing for your arms as he wrapped them around him.Â
âI jusâ wanted to snuggle you,â he shrugged, wiggling impossibly closer to you as he looked back out at the playground, perfectly content to watch the other children play as he sat with the two of you. You rolled your eyes for only Bucky to see, getting another laugh out of him as you squeezed your son tight.Â
âThank you, sweetheart, you know I love your cuddles,â you cooed, pressing a kiss into his soft hair. âYou have awesome timing, did you know that? The absolute best.â Ben hummed in agreement to your not-so-subtle sarcasm, happy as could be while Bucky continued laughing.Â
While you definitely would have enjoyed getting to kiss him just a little bit longer, getting cuddled by your son while Bucky tucked in close and wrapped an arm around your shoulders was a very close second.Â
âŚ
You shut the door to Benâs room gently behind you, tip-toeing out into the living room where Bucky was waiting for you, leaning up against the arm of the couch with his hands resting gently in his lap. He raised his brows expectantly, silently asking how it went.Â
You waved a hand across your face. âHeâs out,â you whispered, making Bucky smile.Â
âI thought he would be,â he said softly, nodding slowly. âI could tell he was so tired there at the end, he was getting goofy.â You laughed as you remembered Benâs antics, climbing all over Bucky as he sat on the couch, doing anything he could to fight sleep, and laughing at just about anything that the super-soldier said to him whether it was meant to be comical or not.Â
âYou wore him out!â you reminded, moving closer to him as you recounted the evening. âI donât think Iâve ever seen that boy run as fast as when you joined the kidsâ game of chase.â He giggled as you stepped into the space between his legs, his hands instinctively lifting off of his lap to rest comfortably on your hips. âEarned yourself a couple points with the moms out there tonight.âÂ
âOh yeah?â he asked sweetly, tilting his head in intrigue as you ran your hands up and down his muscular arms. Very muscular arms⌠You bit your lips and nodded to answer, earning a deep hum. âDid it earn me any points with Benâs mom?âÂ
Your eyes found the chain of his dog tags hanging around his neck, tucked into the soft sweater that stretched over his chest. Buying yourself time to find the right words to answer his flirtatious question, you trailed your hands up his shoulders until they found the beaded chain. Slowly you pulled them out and kept them hooked in two of your fingers, the chain taught against his neck as you finally met his gaze.Â
The blue of his eyes was slowly being overtaken by his pupils as he watched you. Not completely, but just enough to be noticeable, and it gave you a surge of confidence. You still had it.Â
âYou earned enough points to be able to kiss me again,â you bartered, and a single dark brow arched up his forehead as you leaned closer, pressing your body up against his.Â
âHow soon can I cash it in?â The gravel of his voice rumbled through his body, and you felt it go directly to your core. You gave a slight tug on the chain in your hands, clueing him into your answer.Â
He didnât need telling twice. Bucky followed the pull of his dog tags and leaned in to reconnect his lips with yours, and the second they hit home you melted into his grasp. You dropped the chain and wrapped your arms around his neck, putting most of your weight in his arms as his hands slid to wrap around your hips, holding you tight.Â
It was hot, full of fire and hunger. He moved against you like it was second nature, tuned into every little sign and indicator your body was giving him, rendering you practically boneless. He nipped at your bottom lip, and teased your tongue with his own as you let him in, no thoughts in your head save from letting him keep kissing you like his life depended on it.Â
Before you could wrap your brain around needing to stop for air, Bucky broke the kiss. His lips were so close, and yet so far, hovering inches away from yours. You spared a glance to see why he was torturing you like this, leaning back slightly to find his eyebrows furrowed as he stood completely still, peering out of his peripheral vision to follow⌠whatever it was he heard.Â
After a few moments of silence, he relaxed again, turning his focus back to you and donning a sheepish grin when you raised your brows in question. âSorry, I thought I heard Ben.âÂ
Ben⌠Ben, your son, sleeping in the other room.Â
You didnât even have the brain power to remember where you were, let alone keep your motherly instincts intact. Usually, it was you who had the all-hearing ears, being able to pick up on any slight out-of-place movement your son may have made.Â
This time you didnât. But Bucky did. While making out with you.Â
âAre you even real?â You gushed, earning you a deep chuckle that rumbled through him, his nose scrunched up in amusement. âI mean, itâs enough of a task trying to find a man even willing to give a single mom the time of day. But here you are, buying him ice cream on our first date and listening for him mid-makeout.â His cheeks were turning a cute shade of pink as you rattled on with your praise, shaking his head through his amusement.Â
âWell, Iâm glad Iâm doing something right, but thatâs⌠I donât feel like I deserve praise for that,â he admitted modestly, his tumb rubbing a soothing circle into you back as he continued to hold you close. âI actually feel like I should be apologizing for what I said earlier, when I went on about future things, and saying âweâ so many times⌠I- I hope I didnât freak you out.â
The longer he kept talking, the more you were convinced you were dreaming. At any moment you would wake up, and this wonderful wonderful man would be ripped away from you.Â
But when the dream didnât end, you were quick to ease his worries. âPlease donât apologize for that, it was- okay, I donât want to freak you out, but it was actually really refreshing.âÂ
Bucky tilted his head in question, gesturing for you to keep talking, and you took a moment to find the right words to explain what you were trying to tell him. Words that didnât make it sound quite as pathetic as you always thought it did.Â
âThe guys Iâve dated in the past⌠well, Iâll just say that they were less concerned about finding a sitter specifically for the first date, and more interested in finding a way to get Ben out of the equation completely.â You had more to say, but for a moment all you could do was watch him. His face changed as soon as the words left your lips, and you were momentarily fascinated by the thinly veiled discomfort that took over his expression.Â
Bucky was angry.Â
Was it weird that it made your knees weak? His intense care for the both of you â as a complete unit â was making your insides do somersaults, and he wasnât even seeking a reward for it. This wasnât a show, he wasnât trying to get on your good side. No, he was trying to hide it, play it off as something else.Â
âIâd way rather hear you talk about a possible future, about teaching him things as he gets older⌠itâs a nice change from having to explain why Benâs dad hasnât come to take him away for the weekend,â you finished earnestly, watching the internal battle dance behind his eyes. âI like having you around all the time, watching you play together. Youâre really good with him, Buck.âÂ
That last statement seemed to ease enough of his fiery emotions to give you a shy smile. âI try,â he shrugged. âHeâs a sweet boy, itâs hard to tell him no.âÂ
âI know,â you groaned, earning you another laugh that rumbled through his large frame. âYâknow, he likes you a lot. He tells me all the time that youâre his best friend.â Buckyâs face melted into a soft smile, and it made you gooey.Â
âAs much as I like to hear that, I want better for him,â he started, sparing a glance towards Benâs room, as if he was watching him through the walls. Only a mother wouldnât think that was crazy. âHe deserves a best friend his age, not a 107-year-old war veteran.â The bluntness of his statement made you laugh, the mental image of the two of them â and all their many differences â making for a comical image in your head. âDonât get me wrong, he is my best friend, and I have no shame admitting it.âÂ
âOh really? Not any of your superhero friends?â You started, but he made a scrunchy face in distaste, and you did your best not to erupt into more giggles. âAnd what about me?â He dropped the goofy expression and looked back at you with his eyebrow raised.Â
âI was reserving something else for youâŚâ he said smoothly, the timber of his voice sending another shiver through your body.Â
âAnd what would that be?â you asked innocently, the arms still wrapped around his neck trying to encourage him to lean in closer. Instead, Buckyâs grip on you tightened as he rose from the arm of the couch, his darkening eyes never leaving yours as he walked you backwards through your apartment, keeping you balanced as you did your best to keep your feet on the ground.Â
âMmm, I think youâll just have to wait and see,â he hummed, your back hitting the wall of your entry way as his eyes bore into yours. âI think Iâve hit my quota on future-talk tonight,â Bucky whispered.Â
He didnât give you time to come up with a witty reply before he leaned in close and pressed his lips against yours ever so softly, one arms slinking around your waist to pull you flush to him as his other left you, but you couldnât dedicate any thought to where it might have gone when you were running your hands through his hair and enjoying the pleased sounds it drew out of him.Â
It didnât last long, Bucky breaking the kiss after only a few sweet kisses â not nearly enough, in your opinion â giving you a shit eating grin. He whispered a goodnight, stepping back to admire the flustered state he was leaving you in before walking back towards your front door, coat already in hand. And with one last wink he was gone, the door clicking softly as he shut it gently behind him, conscious of the sleeping four year old inside the apartment.Â
You didnât know how long you sat there, bracing yourself against the wall just inside your apartment as you went over the events of the night, remembering each sweet gaze, tender touch, and absolutely tantalizing kiss he had given you. One thing was for sure; it was without a doubt the most romantic date you had ever been on.Â
You took a deep breath and pushed yourself off of the wall, moving to go double-check on Ben before starting your own nightly routine. You stopped in your tracks when your phone vibrated in your pocket, your face quickly breaking into a smile when Buckyâs name appeared on the screen.Â
If weâre still throwing out first date rules, I donât have to wait three days to text you again, right? Great, Iâm glad you agree.Â

The only time youâre able to go to the grocery store in the summertime is when you donât have your kids hanging off your every limb. Your oldest daughter and son are at a summer camp you were able to get them into while your youngest daughter is being watched by your mother who had some time for you to get errands done.
Whoever said parenting was the best thing in the world was lying because you want to cry most days. Itâs not that you donât love your children, you absolutely love them with all your heart. You want nothing more in the world than to be their mom but itâs hard some days. Youâre a single mom to three kids which takes a lot out of you. You have no time to do anything for yourself. Whenever theyâre at school, you spend your days taking care of your baby girl and cleaning the house only for them to return and mess it up all over again.
Being a mom is one of the hardest jobs in the world and itâs not for everyone. However, when you had your kids, you weren't alone. You had a husband who you thought would be with you forever. Then, you caught him with a twenty-year-old in your bed and that set you back decades. It took you a long time to find someone else after him, which you did, and you thought you had gotten your second chance at love.
He was a breath of fresh air after struggling for years. You only had two kids at the time but it was still a handful since they were both so young. You and your second husband had a daughter together, and you thought this was it. This is your family.
Then, he left without warning. He told you that he didnât love you anymore and wanted nothing to do with you or your kids. He threatened to take Abby but you fought him through a lawsuit. He was bouncing between homes and didnât have a steady income, all of which you had. If you thought your first husband was bad, your second husband broke you completely.
You swore off men after that. All you want to do is take care of your kids and live life on your own. Itâs hard but you know you can do it. Your mother has been very supportive of you and helps out when she can but sheâs much older and canât do stuff like she normally could. Your father passed a decade ago so neither of you have him to fall back on. Your brother and sister moved out of the country when they turned eighteen and havenât looked back since.
Youâre truly on your own which you never minded until now.
You fill your shopping cart as you go down the list you made before leaving the house, and you look at the next item on your list. Youâre not looking where youâre going and almost run into someone.
âIâm so sorry,â you gasp and look up.
You gasp again but itâs not from the shock of running into him. This man is⌠You donât think you ever saw a more handsome man in your life. Heâs tall, like a whole foot taller than you, and has dark hair that is not too long. His eyes are bright blue oceans and he is very muscular.
âDonât worry about it. Itâs my fault.â
âNo, itâs mine. I wasnât looking where I was going. Sorry,â you mutter.
Youâre about to move around him to continue your shopping when he stops you.
âI havenât seen you around here and I come here every week.â
âOh, yeah. I usually get my groceries delivered but I had some time today to do it myself.â
âIâm Bucky,â he smiles.
Damn, he has such a great smile, too.
âY/N.â
âDo you care for some company while you finish?â
âSure,â you smile. âSo, Bucky, have you lived in Washington D.C. for long?â
âOn and off. I used to live here years ago. I just recently came back and am now living with my two best friends. You?â
âI just moved here a year ago. I had to get away from⌠stuff⌠I used to live in Nevada and thought a change would do me good.â
âLucky me that you did,â he flirts.
You canât help the blush that forms on your face. Youâre not used to compliments. You finish the rest of your shopping quickly but you donât want to stop talking to Bucky. Heâs the first man you have had such an easy conversation with in a long time. Your mom wants you to put yourself out there again and try dating but you canât think of anything worse than that. Dating means bringing a new man into your kidsâ lives who will probably leave you. Youâre not going to do that to them again so youâll settle for stolen conversations in the grocery store.
Still, you find yourself not wanting to leave the store because then youâll have to stop talking to Bucky. However, when your mom calls about Abby crying because sheâs hungry and you havenât pumped a bottle for her. She can eat solid food but she loves your milk more. Youâre trying to transition her into solid foods but itâs a work in progress.
âSorry. I have to get back home.â
âYeah, of course.â
âIt was really nice to talk to you, though. Maybe Iâll see you back here again.â
âYeah, maybe,â he nods.
Youâre gone before he can ask you for your number. You canât stop thinking about Bucky. You never met a man who could invade all your senses. Your mother left after you got back and you spent the next hour feeding your daughter and putting the groceries away. You put your daughter down for a nap when your phone rings. You take the call when you get to the kitchen to finish with the groceries.
âHey, Emma.â
âY/N! You know that band that Leslie goes on and on about?â
âYeah.â
âTheyâre playing a gig at The Twisted Bar this weekend. You gotta come with us!â
âI donât know. I have Abby and I donât have a sitter.â
âBring her here. My husband would love to watch her. Heâs been so tied with the boys that itâd be nice to watch a girl.â
âAre you sure? What if she gets hungry? She only seems to want my milk.â
âThen pump before coming here. Itâs been such a long time since we all went out. Just once stop worrying about your kids. Jace and Lizzy are at camp and itâs likely Abby will sleep the whole night.â
Youâre still not sure. Going out with your friends usually ends in one of two ways: either you end up going home early because your kids need you or you end up going home early because all the girls want to do is flirt with men. Theyâd never cheat on their husbands and they never take it past the occasional flirty comment. When they get like this, guys love to flirt with you and thatâs when you call it a night.
Youâre not some horny teenager looking for a fun time. You have kids and if these men knew about it, theyâd never flirt with you. Itâs tiring to go to bars and reject every man because you know what itâs going to lead to.
Still, itâd be nice to go out with your friends since itâs been so long.
âFine,â you sigh, âbut Iâm not going there to take some man home.â
âGot it. This is going to be so much fun! Want me to pick you up?â
âNo, Iâll meet you there. What time?â
âSix.â
âIâll bring Abby over at five, then. We can leave together but Iâll need my car just in case.â
You and Emma talk for a little while longer until you hang up. Friday comes quicker than youâd like, and you had just dropped Abby off at Emmaâs house. Youâre nervous to leave her alone but youâve been friends with Emma and Robert for decades so you figure youâd trust them with your kids sooner or later.
You and Emma arrive at The Twisted Bar right after Leslie, Jackie, and April get there. Itâs a reunion of the decade since you havenât seen April in years and Jackie for longer. Itâs been hard finding time away from your kids.
âY/N! Iâm so glad you finally made it!â Leslie squeals and pulls you into a hug.
âEh, I figure itâs time to see my girls.â
âIt has been a long time,â April comments.
Leslie grabs drinks while you sit at a table thatâs near the band thatâs setting up. Leslie has been in love with them ever since she saw them opening for Bon Jovi a few years ago. Theyâve been slowly rising to fame but they love playing in small bars to stay connected to their fans. Leslie comes back with the drinks and you sip yours leisurely while your friends down theirs quickly. Itâs dangerous when you donât taste the alcohol; thatâs how you get drunk quickly.
âHey, Iâll be right back. Iâm going to get some water.â
Your friends wave you off, too invested in the music to listen. You shake your head with a smile and make your way to the bar counter. You look away for a second and run into someone seconds later.
âHey, Y/N!â You look at the person and see Bucky standing there. âWe canât keep meeting like this.â
âBucky, what are you doing here?â You pause after hearing how that sounds. âSorry, that sounds weird. I mean, hi.â
âHi,â he laughs. âIâm with my roommates. Theyâre here to see the band. They wanted me to come out.â
âSame.â
âI was hoping to see you. I really liked talking to you the other day.â
âSame here.â
âCan I get you a drink?â
âSure.â
Bucky gets you and himself a drink before escorting you to one of the back tables. Most everyone is up front listening to the band so the back is clear of crowds. Itâs easier to hear him, too.
âSo, I know Iâve said this but you⌠Okay, Iâm not very good at this. My friend, Steve, says I need to get out more but I actually like staying in and being alone. I donât normally do this but I really enjoyed talking to you. Can I have your number?â
Just like that, your entire world shatters. You like Bucky but now that he wants to take the next step, heâs becoming a real person instead. A real person who you might have to take home to your kids. A real person who will just leave you like everyone else. You donât want to do this to Bucky but you scoff in annoyance.
âAre you okay?â
âYeah, fine, Bucky. Look, I gotta get back to my friends.â
âWait, is it something I said? You donât have to give me your number if you donât want to. I just⌠Youâre beautiful and funny. I had a great time with you at the grocery store.â
You donât mean to be rude or snappy with Bucky but youâre sick and tired of men feigning interest in you only to leave you and your kids. Youâre not going to put them through all that trouble if the man isnât going to stay. If you donât give men the light of day, then they canât leave you.
âYou want my number?â
âI do.â
âWhich number do you want, Bucky?â
âUh, well, how many numbers do you have?â
You laugh bitterly. âOh, I have numbers coming out of my ears. For instance, ten.â
âTen?â
âYeah. Thatâs how many months old my baby girl is.â
Buckyâs face doesnât fall in disgust but heâs not jumping for joy either. Tears prick your eyes but you wonât let them fall.
âYou have a baby girl?â
âYeah. Yeah, sexy, huh? How about this for a number? Six. Thatâs how old my other daughter is. Eight is the age of my son. Two is how many times Iâve been married and divorced. Sixteen is the number of dollars I have in my bank account. 480-555-0199. Thatâs my phone number, and with all the numbers I just gave you, Iâm guessing zero is the number of times youâre gonna call it. Youâre nice, Bucky, but Iâve been down this road too many times. I will not allow my children to meet a man I know wonât stay in my life. Really, it was nice talking to you but no man wants a woman with three children.â
You grab your drink and leave the table but stop when you hear your phone ringing. You take out your phone and notice a number you donât recognize. Knowing your daughter is with someone else whoâs not your mother, you answer it thinking Leslieâs kids are using their phones to call you.
âHello?â
âFor the life of me, I canât figure out why anyone would leave you. I understand the walls youâve put up. I understand why you donât date or donât trust men, especially around your kids. I understand that you had to put yourself back together multiple times. Iâm not dismissing that, but I can promise you that I am not like other men. I donât abandon people and I happen to love kids. If you give me a chance, I would love to show you that youâre not a piece of ass. Youâre not a notch on someoneâs belt. Youâre a woman who I would love to get to know.â
You turn to face Bucky who has his phone to his ear. The tears are already coming down whether you want them to or not.
âAll I ask for is a chance.â
âOkay,â you whisper.
Maybe itâs you who needs to give him a chance. Then maybe, youâll finally find the one person youâve been looking for.

This is your boyfriend, Mom? | Beefy!Bucky Barnes x f!reader.
Pairings: Beefy Bucky Barnes x Single Mom reader. Themes: Bucky getting absolutely roasted by a six and half year old baby boy. Summary: Bucky comes over and meets your very protective son for the very first time. A/N: I'm in a phase where I like Bucky interacting with kids. . .đĽ˛
The doorbell chimes, and you pull open the door, coming face to face with a broad-shouldered figure that fills the entire doorway. Buckyâs piercing blue eyes twinkle with humor, but thereâs a hint of uncertainty in his posture, as if heâs unsure whether to step inside or bolt.
âYouâre here!â you exclaim with a warm smile, stepping aside to let him in.
âWouldnât miss it,â Bucky murmurs, leaning in for a brief kiss before glancing around your living room nervously. âSo, whereâs the little guy?â
A shuffle of small feet behind you catches your attention. You turn to see your son peeking out from behind the couch, his eyes narrowing suspiciously as he sizes up the man who just entered his territory.
âThere he is!â You wave your hand toward your son encouragingly. âCome say hi.â
Your son doesnât budge, crossing his arms over his chest and glaring at Bucky like a miniature security guard. âSo, this is your boyfriend?â
You can hear the disdain dripping from each word, and Buckyâs lips twitch into an amused smile. âI guess I am.â
âMom,â your son deadpans, his eyes never leaving Buckyâs. âThis is what youâve been hyping up? He looks like he just rolled out of bed.â
âHey, kid, I put in a lot of effort today.â Bucky gestures to his dark leather jacket, perfectly disheveled hair, and rugged stubble. âThis is my âIâm totally put together but still approachableâ look.â
âApproachable?â your son snorts. âWith that hair? You look like a drowned dog whoâs been through a tornado and then zapped by lightning.â
Bucky blinks, surprised. He looks at you, then back at your son, and his mouth quirks up in a grin. âA drowned dog, huh? Thatâs original. So, whatâs your excuse for your hair?â
Your sonâs small hands shoot up defensively to his carefully combed locks. âMy hair looks great, thank you very much. I didnât put all this mousse in for you.â
You bite your lip, trying to suppress a laugh. âBe nice,â you whisper to your son, who rolls his eyes dramatically before turning his attention back to Bucky.
âAlright, old manââ
âOld?â Bucky interjects, eyebrows lifting. âIâm still in my prime, kid. What are you, five?â
âIâm six and a half.â Your sonâs voice drips with indignation, as if Bucky has committed an unforgivable crime by getting his age wrong. âAnd youâre still old. You probably creak when you sit down.â
Bucky shakes his head, chuckling. âI donât creak, but your mom might tell you Iâve got a few squeaky joints, yeah.â
âEw, donâtâdonât tell me stuff like that.â Your son makes a gagging noise and then glares up at you. âWhy is he even here, Mom? You know Iâm supposed to have final say.â
âYou have final say?â Bucky repeats, clearly intrigued. He shifts his weight, giving the boy a once-over. âWhatâs your name, anyway, kid?â
âLucas.â He squares his shoulders, a defiant lift to his chin. âGot it memorized, old man?â
Bucky nods slowly, a glint of amusement in his gaze. âLucas, huh? Alright, Lucas, Iâll try not to forget it.â
âYou better not.â Lucas looks Bucky up and down, his brow furrowing in concentration. âMom, this guy looks like one of those 90s action figures. You know, the kind where the legs donât bend, and theyâre so top-heavy they keep falling over.â
You snort loudly, unable to hold it in, and Bucky shoots you a betrayed look.
âKidâs got a point,â you manage to say between laughs, and Bucky shakes his head, feigning exasperation.
âOh, really?â Bucky folds his arms across his chest, staring down at Lucas. âWell, you look like a baby duck that wandered into a windstorm. All fluffed up and ready to pick a fight, huh?â
Lucas blinks, startled for a moment before narrowing his eyes, a grin forming on his face. âBetter than looking like a grumpy cat that hasnât had its coffee yet.â
You cough to hide your laughter, and Bucky raises an eyebrow. âGrumpy cat?â
âYeah, with all those lines between your eyebrows.â Lucas steps closer, squinting as if heâs examining a rare species. âI bet you frown at the sun, too.â
You stifle a giggle, and Bucky sighs dramatically, placing his hands on his hips. âIâm starting to think you donât like me, Lucas.â
âStarting?â Lucas tilts his head mockingly. âIâm basically giving you a head start, âcause if I really didnât like you, youâd know.â
Bucky chuckles, glancing at you. âI like him. Heâs got guts.â
âYeah, well, donât get too comfy, Gramps.â Lucas gestures to the couch with a flourish. âThe only reason youâre even here is âcause Mom seems to think youâre âcuteâ or whatever.â
âI am cute,â Bucky agrees seriously, causing Lucasâs mouth to drop open in disbelief.
âNo. Way. Youâve got metal bits, and your beard is all scratchy, andââ Lucas cuts himself off, his gaze dropping to Buckyâs stomach. âAnd a jelly belly! Mom, did you know your boyfriend has a jelly belly?â
âWhat?â Bucky sputters, glancing down at himself with wide eyes. âI donât have a jelly bellyâAlso this beard?â He strokes it like heâs pondering lifeâs great mysteries. âYour mom likes it.â
âYes, you do!â Lucas insists, poking at Buckyâs midsection with a tiny finger. âSuperheroes are supposed to be all muscle, but youâre hiding a squishy balloon in there.â
âSquishy balloon?â Bucky repeats, looking thoroughly betrayed as he turns to you.
âLucas,â you chide gently, but your sonâs eyes are wide and innocent. âDonât be mean,â you add, fighting back laughter.
Bucky sighs and looks down at Lucas with a mock serious expression. âYou know, Iâm part super-soldier, part robot, and part⌠dad bod. Itâs a package deal, kid.â
Lucas narrows his eyes, scrutinizing Buckyâs face. âI guess that makes you a little cooler, but youâre still a metal-armed grumpy pants.â
âMetal-armed grumpy pants?â Bucky echoes, eyebrows lifting. âWow, weâre just racking up the nicknames today, huh?â
âYup.â Lucas grins, then frowns again, cocking his head thoughtfully. âYouâre also kinda like a⌠metal mop. All hair up top and a shiny stick arm.â
âA metal mop?â Bucky asks, his voice filled with mock offense as he raises his eyebrows. âYouâre really on a roll.â
Lucas shrugs, the corners of his mouth lifting slightly. âI think it suits you.â
âWell, youâve got guts, Iâll give you that,â Bucky says with a chuckle.
Lucas scowls, but thereâs no real heat behind it. âYouâre lucky, you know.â
âOh?â Bucky leans down, hands on his knees to get on eye level with Lucas. âAnd whyâs that?â
ââCause Mom likes you,â Lucas mutters, eyes flickering to you and back to Bucky, a hint of protectiveness in his tone. âBut if you hurt her, Iâll tell everyone you still sleep with a nightlight.â
Buckyâs eyes widen in shock. âWhat? I donâtââ
âYeah, okay,â Lucas interrupts, holding up a finger. âBut Iâll tell everyone you do. Including all the Avengers.â
Buckyâs mouth opens, and then he shuts it, clearly struggling for a response. âYou wouldnât.â
Lucas just stares at him, completely unblinking. âYou wanna test me, Mr. Metal Mop?â
Bucky glances at you, looking for support, but you just raise your hands innocently. âHeâs tougher than he looks.â
After a long pause, Bucky leans down, lowering his voice conspiratorially. âAlright, kid, name your terms.â
Lucas pretends to think for a moment, tapping his chin. âYou have to play video games with me⌠three times. No complaints. And no quitting when I beat you.â
Bucky looks horrified. âIââ
âDeal?â Lucas extends his tiny hand with a sly grin.
Bucky glances between you and Lucas, then sighs dramatically. âDeal.â
Lucasâs grin widens. âOh, and one more thingâif I catch you throwing the controller in frustration, Iâll know you canât handle losing.â
Bucky stares at him, completely lost for words.
âJust a fair warning.â Lucas pats Buckyâs arm as if heâs the one doing Bucky a favor. âWelcome to the family, Mr. Jelly Belly whoâs gonna get his butt kicked at Mario Kart.â
You burst out laughing, and Bucky groans, running a hand down his face. âYouâre really not gonna let this go, are you?â
âNope.â Lucas shakes his head with a grin. âBetter practice up, Grumpy Pants.â
âPractice? Against you?â Bucky scoffs, but the smile pulling at his lips betrays him. âKid, Iâm gonna wipe the floor with you.â
âSure, Mr. Nightlight,â Lucas replies smoothly. âSure.â
Bucky glances at you and then back at Lucas, a mischievous look in his eye. âYou know, at this rate, youâre gonna start calling me Dad.â
Lucas pauses, then tilts his head with a confused look. âWhy would I call you Dad?â
Bucky smirks. âBecause you know Iâll beat you so bad at those video games, youâre gonna need a parental figure to console you.â
âRight, I can call you Dad,â Lucasâs eyes light up, and he leans in, voice dropping to a whisper. âOnly if you pay me twenty bucks a week, Dad.â
Buckyâs jaw drops. âTwenty bucks?!â
âYeah,â Lucas shrugs nonchalantly. âThink of it as a âdad fee.â Iâm expensive. Momâs got good taste.â
Bucky looks at you, baffled. âDid he justâ?â
âOh, and Iâll need a ride to school every morning,â Lucas continues, holding up his fingers as he lists his demands. âAnd ice cream. Twice a week. But no toppings. Iâm not greedy.â
Bucky bursts out laughing, shaking his head. âYou really thought this through, huh?â
âBusiness is business,â Lucas says with a serious nod. âSo, whatâs it gonna be, Dad?â
Bucky blinks, then leans back and sighs dramatically. âSorry, buddy, but I think Iâll just stick with Mr. Metal Mop.â
Lucas crosses his arms, a sly grin forming on his lips. âYour loss. Couldâve been Dad. Now youâre just gonna be the guy who cried during Shrek.â
Buckyâs shoulders slump as he glances at you, utterly defeated. âIâm doomed.â
âYup,â you say with a grin. âBut hey, at least you didnât agree to the âdad fee.ââ
âTrue,â Bucky mutters, then he turns back to Lucas, raising an eyebrow. âBut for the record, I did not cry during Shrek.â
âSure, Mr. Nightlight,â Lucas deadpans. âSure.â
