My Recommended (batshit) Metroid Playing Order!

First, three disclaimers:

1. Don’t play Other M. Just. Just don’t. Any necessary lore, story, or character moments can be found in the many many videos tearing it to SHREDS. It’s earned it’s reputation as “worst Metroid game ever” fair and square

2. You can play the Prime trilogy in order 1-3 whenever you can get them; I’ve only played the first, but as far as I can tell they just keep getting better, and the point of this list is to play them from least to most refined

3. I recommend not playing the first two at all either. They both have remakes that include all of the plot And More™️, and at several points are difficult due to hardware constraints rather than intentional choice on the devs’ part. The maps are a much needed quality-of-life mechanic, and if you ARE gonna play these two, I suggest mapping the rooms out yourself. Anyways, the actual list!

1. Zero Mission. This is the remake of the first game, and it makes sense as a hopping-on point, both because of its chronology, and because of the design choice that got Metroid fans heated (it was generally thought of as the worst Metroid game until Other M came out. Unlike Other M, it’s actually fun to play, it just. Gets rid of the exploration that was so central to the first three games in a way that feels Bad. Dread and Fusion still guide you more than the first three, but it feels more organic and less handhold-y, and Samus Returns makes the guidance optional, except for when you’ve hunted down all of the Metroids in an area and can move onto the next, because that’s kinda the core gameplay loop)

2. Fusion. This one and Super feel about the same, but it’s easier to move from GBA controls to SNES controls, with the exception of the Space Jump and Screw Attack feeling worse. Regardless, Fusion is probably my third favorite Metroid game due to its plot, aesthetics, and Samus having an actual personality for once. Anyways,

3. Super. Super Metroid gives you no guidance; you explore and find your way forward on your own. Just about all of the storytelling is environmental. The boss fights are only a tiny bit bullshit (Mother Brain my detested). Older fans of the series consider it peak Metroid, and there’s certainly reasoning to that take! However, it controls just a little bit clunkier than the next two

4. Dread. Metroid Dread is hands down my favorite Metroid game; it controls like a dream, it teaches you how everything works cleanly, AND there’s SEVERAL important characters! With like, personalities! It also has really good lore implications, and a good plot. To top it off, it has my favorite suit designs. Something about the visible fibers of the suit just Gets Me

5. Samus Returns. Samus Returns is the 3ds remake of Metroid II, and is better than it in every way. It’s clunkier than Dread, to be sure, but I personally feel like it was easier to grasp after having played Dread, as Dread does a better job teaching you how to counter, which is something that only exists in these two games. Like I said before, the guidance to fund the Metroids you’re hunting is almost entirely optional, which makes exploration quite nice! It also has a bunch of neat mechanics that make the most sense on the 3ds, but it’s probably best to have a good handle on Recent Metroid Game Controls before you have to go use those, which is the other reason why I put this one last

And yeah, that’s the list! I know this is such a weird order to play the series in, but it’s genuinely the order I recommend to have the most fun with it, so enjoy!

Edit: chronological order is, for the record, 1/Zero Mission, 2/Samus Returns, Super, Other M, Fusion, and Dread, with the Prime trilogy. Somewhere? Maybe between 1 and 2, maybe not?

But yeah Doctor Who aka a show about a time-travelling alien called the Doctor who travels through time and space in their blue police box (it’s bigger on the inside) yada, yada, I assume you know the basics. 

I think the thing that makes me go nuts over this show is how versatile it is, because yeah that episode that I mentioned does slap (even though it has a weak subplot), but some episodes are absolute garbage.

That’s what makes this show so good. I feel like there are two kind of Doctor Who episodes:

Deep, emotional episodes that question topics like mortality, existence, power relationships, grief, identity.

Episodes that you have to watch in order to have a good fucking time and laugh at a weird moster of the week.

Like, I rewatched some banging episodes like The God Complex, which questions automatic authority and faith, and The Waters of Mars, which delves into limitless power and morality, or Heaven Sent, which is a complex mental maze to work through grief.

And then there are some episodes with farting green aliens. Or a space pig. Please remember that Britney Spears’s Toxic is played as an homage to Earth.

So it has some raw as shit lines, like the ones that I put in my WIP Wednesday. Like “The day you lose someone isn’t the worth. At least you’ve got something to do. It’s all the days they stay dead.”, “Sometimes the only choices that you have are the bad ones, but you still have to choose.” or “Good men don’t need rules. Today is not the day to find out I have so many.”

And then it has lines like “Do you mind not farting while I am saving the world?”, “Always bring a banana to a party”, “Don’t be lasagna.” or “Why are you running like a penguin with its arse on fire?”

This show can be super overwhelming, because the new Doctor Who (2005 - current) already has 13 seasons, so if you want to know what to skip lemme know (lmao, some episodes are trash (degoratory), not even trash (affectionate)). But yeah this show is buckwild and it’s both peak television and utter garbage and that’s why I love it.

TL;DR: this show is nuts you should watch doccy whomst

HM i think nyo china should live in a place of residence that makes me want to eat the rich whenever i walk past it, filthy capitalist that she is. but should that be the penthouse apartment of a high-rise condominium or should it be a lovely landed property? or maybe she has 2 houses an apartment for yao and sometimes herself in the suburbs of their primary school and a rich people house in the city that is near the elite high school she WILL get yao into (but this might mean moving yao away from his friends in middle school 😔) . decisions are hard. but yes she definitely buys her way out of trouble with her neighbours all the time

hmm i think that like. even without a mentor's guidance yao will probably become less unruly and wild as he ages, as a process of growing up and becoming less focused on causing Chaos (he's directing that feralness to like. making an actual plan to take over the world probably), because society's tolerance for buckwild bullshit decreases as you get older and older, and the likelihood that he'll miss out on awards and other accolades if he continues this sort of behaviour, which his ambition won't allow for. BUT what i think won't change is the fact that he's an arrogant asshole and he becomes more and more so as he grows up with a lifetime of academic and extracurricular excellence. so im just saying imagine said sub in high school absolutely tearing apart one of his assignments. like just covering the whole thing in red-inked ruthless rebuttals and giving him a c. yao has never gotten a c in his life and is both humiliated and impressed because the sub is RIGHT, and they managed to outlogic him (which up till now only his friends + nyo china could probably yao doesn't associate with dumb people). and then he progresses amazingly in that class during the sub's remaining time with them and gets nyo china to let the sub teach him when they land a job. like i feel as though he would greatly benefit from an older mentor who won't tolerate his bullshit and would challenge him to reach new heights and this might be person!! (this thought is kinda unrefined and doesn't fully explain the Vibes but i need a nap now + it's not really Baby au anymore it's Slightly Less Baby au fhwinfkwg good afternoon to you and good night for me!)

They’re so sweet omg ☺️ Yao and Iran giving Aditya little presents... I love it. Their small gang of bastards has to stick together after all. Also yeah RIP India; at least they still have time to interact at school, but at-home hours is rough. (also, Yao’s neighborhood is moderately far from Aditya’s, but what about Iran? o-o I feel like they’d live a bit closer (?), maybe a couple streets away, and Iran isn’t on Indus’s blacklist yet............ (but then again, Indus probably banned any of his friends coming over lol). Also, Yao makes a plan to somehow get into the house across from Aditya’s and flash morse code at night with flashlights so they can talk, and hopefully it entertains his house arrested friend! Also I think (?) there was a whole crackdown a while ago in China on people who were buying houses they didn’t live in, so they could get their kids into good schools in that residential area.... that radiates her vibes and I hate it. lol thank you; I was trying to channel Chinese parent energy and I’m glad it came through! The kids are grumbling that Yao could just be 100% awful or 100% academically stellar, but no, he has to be a genius AND a delinquent (just choose one, god) also yes they have a lil club just for them! Only people who have the honor of suffering get to join :)

And to your last paragraph, HELL YES IT’S CANON NOW. “Yao doesn't associate with dumb people” I’m crying omg. Yao takes all honors/gifted classes and doesn’t speak to anyone who doesn’t 😭 The big red C glaring at him from the top of his (once beautiful) essay stabs him viscerally in the chest and he needs to take a few days before looking at it again in order to recover his strength ego. He reads through all the comments and each one shreds his ego even more lmao; they’re not even mean comments but he just knows the sub is Completely Correct and sinks into a low like he’s never had. But yesss @ the whole episode pushing him to do better in order to keep up his Academic Excellence, and maybe impress the sub whom he now views as superior and whom he actually has respect for.

May I propose the sub is miss Vietnam o-o... she probably should be in the gang of ancients (as the only other kid who can rival Yao in Logic and fistfights, but isn’t friends with him like the other ancients because he sucks and she doesn’t like his bs) but shhhhh.... we can make a spin-off AU and nobody needs to know... lol anyways, I feel like if the substitute is Vietnam, she and Yao would have some sort of antagonism (not too tense but not friendly bickering either) at the beginning; Yao really wants to impress her and do better in class but Vietnam just. Does not like how he’s an asshole, especially to other people he thinks are below him sksksk. But they slowly warm up to each other especially as Yao gets ~reformed~ ever so slightly, and then it turns into friendly bickering and Long Debates on various intriguing topics (Yao always plays devils advocate in those :|). But yeah I definitely think she’d be a good candidate ig, since she doesn’t take bs even from the star pupil who is also an ass. And she’s a sub at first, so it gives her a little bit more room to throw hands whenever she wants instead of having to control herself lol

18. A memorable meal this year?

From a purely culinary standpoint this is a buckwild answer, but it’s about the Emotions Attached, because it was a lunch from KFC lmao. 

KFC has always been my mom’s favorite fast food, but with 5 kids, 3 of whom were picky eaters, it was never a great option in terms of family dinners. Plus, the only KFC was about 45 minutes away, and considering most of the kids played various sports, there was never any time to get it. But sometimes, when my mom was at her absolute limit, she would just Snap and be like “you know what? I’m getting KFC tonight. Fuck it” and she would pick up one of the kids from whatever practice they were at, drive 45 minutes to get that KFC, and come home with a giant bucket of fried chicken like “if you don’t like it, have some leftover pasta. I don’t give a shit” and then she would be like “also? I’M picking the movie tonight. i don’t care if you don’t want to watch it. we’re watching Jingle all the Way!” And, like, she was never mean about it? It wasn’t like we were suddenly frightened of mom because she let loose and got all authoritative? Like, we very much understood that when mom went and got KFC, it was because she was going through it, and those were some of my favorite nights! Because we’d gather around and make fun of whatever movie she picked, because it was usually terrible, and the older I get, the more important it feels that we all kind of like...understood that we were helping her just by not being little monsters for a night when she needed us to be cool. 

Anyway, I didn’t mention any of that to my mom when I invited her over and ordered some KFC, but she’d just visited her sister in the locked ward where her sister lives, and she could only meet her briefly in the lobby, and her sister still doesn’t fully understand what’s going on with the whole covid thing and why we can’t visit her anymore. And I knew my mom was Going Through It, so I invited her over, and we sat outside on my back deck, and it was chilly but it was nice to hang out, just the two of us. In non-Covid times, we do it a lot! But this year has been different, and it was really nice to feel normal for a bit.

And then, when she left, I checked her Snapchat story and saw that she had taken a picture of me while I was looking down at my food and laughing a little bit, and she captioned it with “all is right with the world!” and, listen, i know 100% she was probably mostly talking about the KFC, but I’m sure it was nice to hang out with me too lmao

So apparently some dev has assured us that Sylvanas is not going to die in BFA and that they got a big story for her. I'm trying to stay a little optimistic, but things still dont look great. Think theres still a good way they can spin all this?

normally I would say that blizzard saying that can’t really be trusted bc like… they don’t really have a good track record of that, of saying “oh that definitely doesn’t happen!!” but then it does, with infuriating consistency, but given that there’s not really anyone that they could reasonably replace sylvanas with as leader of the forsaken (don’t quote me on that, obvious blizzard has done wilder shit), we can probably safely assume that no, sylvanas is not going to die, at least not during bofa. that being said, that doesn’t mean that they’re not gonna do some buckwild shit w her lmao

my take w sylvanas is, no matter the awful, heinous shit she’s done in the name of the horde, she usually ends up being right, in the most horrible way possible. yes, she doesn’t communicate her plans, and doesn’t shy away from doing some questionable shit if she thinks it’s what needs to be done to survive (which, obviously I’m Not saying Yeah it was totally Okay to commit war crimes!! but apparently we gotta start spelling that shit out, like yes, obviously War Crimes Are Bad lmao), and yes, she sort of expects her allies/forces to just do as she says without question because Sylvanas Knows Best And You Should Just Trust Her Implicitly Because She’s Right, but ultimately, I think Sylvanas is actually doing everything she’s doing, bc she genuinely thinks she has to in order to ensure that the Horde as a whole will survive.

I think what they could do (and what they’re probably going to do, based on a couple of rumors I’ve seen floating around), is that the next raid tier/expansion, they’re going to introduce a new big bad for everyone to focus on, and reveal that Actually, Sylvanas Has Been Preparing For This The Whole Time, And You’re A Fool For Doubting Her. This is, of course, best case scenario based on the circumstances we’re in now, and not what I’d find ideal? But it’s something that I would accept as a logical step forward in the story.

Ideally, what I would like to happen, or have happened, is that, post Lich King, Sylvanas’ character arc (& ergo the forsaken’s story line) evolves into she & her people finding their place in the world, and while she doesn’t really know where there being no arthas leaves her, she does force herself to be there for the forsaken, bc I feel like there’s this aspect of the forsaken that’s been forgotten as time’s gone on, and it’s this whole theme of, “listen, we’re all each other has. everything and everyone else has condemned and abandoned us, and we’re going to have to lean on each other if we want to survive.” so, this theme could have theoretically been revisited once the lich king was defeated, and in the ensuing existential dread, sylvanas & forsaken learn to try and move on, and decide what their life experience means for themselves. they could try and mend their fallen homeland, or start looking for a cure for undeath in earnest, or just generally try and find meaning in a life and a world that actively does not care about them.

so in this, instead of the kor'kron being sent over to play watch dog to the forsaken since putress fucked everything up, or in addition to it, the kor'kron also act as a bolstering force to the forsaken, since they’ve lost so many already, and serve to prove that yes, the forsaken are well and truly considered part of the horde and orgrimmar’s allies and equals. this is an act of friendship and healing rather than punishment/mistrust, and in doing this, the forsaken’s new purpose in not-life is to continue for the sake of their friends and allies, and to try and make things better for themselves & their families. so in turn, this could translate into a character arc for sylvanas that’s about healing and continuing to live past her trauma, and not only to just survive, but thrive.

tl;dr, I’m always a slut for horde found family and am literally starving for a story that involves people w PTSD actually living past their trauma and recovering from it

what movies have you watched recently? what shows are you watching?

In the immediate past I watched Last Holiday because it’s a fun movie and I enjoy it. Not groundbreaking, but pleasant. I’m not watching any particular show at the moment, Steven Universe Future finished and I haven’t replaced it, mostly I’ve been playing video games I haven’t played before/yet to get them completed. I got like 6 between my bday and christmas, which cleans up the 6 I WORKED TO COMPLETE lmao.

did an event that you were looking forward to get cancelled?

I’m unemployed and still in some awful paralysis to keep me from making money drawing, so I wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon. But I’m reasonably certain that the Promare showings are likely going to be canceled since they should probably be closed altogether lmao

I wasn’t invited but a high school friend had to cancel their wedding which was sad to hear about. I’m sorry for their problems more than anything I might have or have not done in the past month.

my books. I read a volume of Saiyuki again since it’s been a while, before that By the Great Horn Spoon, before that Spy High, before that the Mortal Instruments series, before that... Chapterhouse Dune, before that Heretics of Dune, before that......... whatever Black Jack volumes I have, and so on into infinity. And of course whatever fic on twitter or ao3 that someone can make me sit down and focus my attention on. And the background radiation of reading SCP Foundation entries in numerical order (I’m on SCP 1936)
