Is This An Act of Terror?
I lived in Columbus for 9 years. I performed and helped organize plenty of comedy shows in the city. I walked the campus of Ohio State and performed there as well. I work at a company that is in the campus area. I have many friends and family members that live in that city. So, it’s difficult, even after having moved, to not consider myself still a part of that community in some capacity.
I first found out about the tragedy at Ohio State Monday morning while at work. I received an email about an active shooter being present and that our company’s building was on lockdown. I don’t work from that building anymore so that was a tough experience. First, the hope that all of my colleagues are safe and then, second, to figure out what is exactly going on at campus.
In any tragedy like this one, my immediate reaction is just to feel awful in general. It’s such a range of emotions from sadness that it is occurring, powerlessness to just be sitting and observing it, and anger to see that this type of violence is occurring yet again and amplified on a national stage. But, then, it’s impossible to not personalize it.
I felt the same way when the shooting in Orlando occurred but held back from writing something like this. My brother lives in Orlando so I was concerned for him initially. I have a number of friends and fellow comedians in Orlando so I felt for them. When it happened at a gay club, I felt even worse as both a supporter of gay rights and as someone who feels some of the most fun shows I ever did in Columbus were at gay clubs. That such joy could turn into a venue for violence is sad to deal with.
As I did my job while also following along with updates in Columbus, I felt the need to get away. I went to the gym on my lunch break but of course while on a treadmill one of the TVs was showing CNN. By this point, as with so many other national tragedies, the attention turned to the perpetrator. Wolf Blitzer was asking the question, “Is this an act of terror?” If you haven't been able to tell, “an act of terror” has become code for “Is Islamic fundamentalism responsible for this?” and even more generally, “Is a brown person's face going to be put on this screen soon?”
This is the deepest and most unfortunate point to any of these tragedies. These are the moments where even more emotions start mixing from feelings of anger to selfishness to deep sadness. These are the moments where I have to wonder if someone that even remotely looks like me is going to be responsible for this attack and, yet again, plastered by the media for the nation to see.
Tumblr media
Is this an act of CNN?
Unfortunately, as it turned out, that was the case, and I hate to say that once the media starts asking about “terror” and authorities don't shoot down that buzzword, it's safe to say that authorities saw a man of color was responsible and are now feeding in to this labeling of that as “terror.” By the point that Blitzer was questioning “Is this an act of terror?” I already knew by the standards that are always presented by the media and the sad repetitiveness of these national tragedies that a person of color was responsible and Islamic fundamentalism would find its way into claiming responsibility.
I feel awful having to bring my own skin color into any national tragedy but that is what I have been pushed into via society. Every national tragedy that gets brought out is another opportunity for others to look at me the wrong way. Every “act of terror” is another time for me to shake my head. It felt worse, with it happening in Columbus and Ohio State, which are both communities where I as a man of brown skin color worked and made people laugh at the very differences and misunderstandings that might have led Abdul Razak Ali Artan over the edge.
I do not know what led Abdul Razak Ali Artan or any person who commits these kinds of national tragedies to do what they do. It's even more disheartening after reading Kevin Stankiewicz's account of interviewing him in August. What I can say is that I was once 18. I was a good kid from a good family. I was foolish about a lot of the world. I was lonely. I was depressed. At times, I felt discriminated. But, I was fine. My thoughts, no matter how dark they may have been, never led to violence. I got through it and grew and became who I am today. Some individuals don't. Some individuals become misguided. Some individuals snap. We see that in this case and we've seen them with many others. The others include those labeled under “Islamic fundamentalism” but they are also seen in the likes of Ted Kaczynski, Timothy McVeigh, Eric Harris, Dylan Klebold, Dylann Roof, James Holmes, Adam Lanza, and the list goes on. These are all “acts of terror” and resolving them are a complicated mix of several issues. They cannot be narrowed down to simple labels and I'm sick of seeing them happening in a continuous repetitive way of violence and dumbed-down media coverage.
I by no means want to show sympathy to murderers. If I had my way, we would have no fixation on who was responsible for any of these acts. But we are a culture that is fascinated by our killers and perpetrators of violence. Why else do we still bring up Charles Manson or Jeffrey Dahmer? Yet, we push these men aside as “mentally unbalanced” while we address other men as “Muslims” as if an unbalanced religious agenda is any different than an unbalanced white supremacist agenda or an unbalanced anti-government agenda or an unbalanced anti-technology agenda. They are all inexplicable agendas for the violence that they lead to.
I personalize this hypocrisy because it’s too hard for me not to. And, I'll put it into terms of comedy because I often do in what I write on here. For every “act of terror” perpetrated by “Islam,” it takes me a step back for what I do with my comedy and what I have to deal with from my audiences. It's another unsure moment for my brown face in entertaining people and making them feel or become better. My white male colleagues don't have to deal with that. Many times, they get on stage expressing the same white male angst and depression that leads to the “acts of terror” that the likes of Harris and Klebold, Roof, or Holmes perpetrated and yet it is found laughable (or despicable if they don't know what they're doing on stage) by audiences. I, and many other comedians of color, do not have such a luxury.
These incidents hurt me on many levels. I haven't expressed that before but with the national microscope coming on to Columbus at least for this past week, I felt like I had to. I feel deeply for the victims and their families. I feel angry at how these incidents are treated and presented to the masses. I try to escape from the media coverage then feel guilty for doing so. It's a constant loop for the day or week that these incidents happen and I'm sure I'm not alone in that. I'm left, at times, feeling powerless. So many of us are getting frustrated having to constantly remind people to remain reasonable and to assure that a majority of us are not the one or two brown faces smacked on their screens constantly by 24-hour news sources.
It was nice, even from afar, to see the community rally. After 9 years of being a part of that community, I wish I could have joined in that. It was good to see people of all backgrounds and all faiths come together and be strong. To be Buckeye strong or Ohio strong in this case. We have to be strong in these situations. What other choice do we have for acts that are too hard to explain?
