If you were to find a long-dead corpse and a very old comic while renovating your house, which would excite you more? The comic, of course. I was hooked from Chapter One. We are back in a post-war world of corporal punishment and cross-dressing Dick Emery. A world where Dave, the comic editor, thinks he is giving a girl he fancies a truly great treat by taking her to this new American restaurant - McDonalds! Dave sees this as "the future" We are in a world where the old guard are still in charge of the comics and so give us endless strips about The War; remember reading The Caning Commando, anyone? Well, don't worry, there are several summaries of the great German basher included. Oh, did I mention this post-war world is still racist and sexist? This first book in the Read Em and Weep series (it's about comics, so we have to have continuing stories, of course) is part history, part detective story. The main character is Dave. I do not wish to do a spoiler about him, since the fun is in the reading, but suffice it to say that he is described at one point as "apart from being a lazy serial killer, Dave was also a lazy detective". Dave has been surviving for years off the sweets which used to be given away with our comics in the UK before some spoilsports in government decided these sweets may not be the healthiest things to give kids. He is trying to create a new comic, but is finding new ideas difficult to get past the old bosses who are veterans of the war. But something has to be done at Fleetpit Publications while Angus, Angus, and Angus of Dundee - sorry, Aberdeen - are producing comics which are genuinely entertaining and thus attracting more readers. Expect great things from the Nemesis team of O'Neill and Mills (of course, a reference to Torquemada manages to sneak in). They know what they are talking about; their biogs at the end of the book reveal that they worked at both Fleetpit and Angus, so expect thorough research. But mainly expect good fun. I can't wait for Volume 2. Expect it to be gear! Maybe even fab! BTW does anyone know why a "Fourpenny One" means a fist in the face?
