i finally have the time and the right mindset to start focusing on souvenir pop and to actively listen to the songs, with thought and feel. so naturally, i’m also going to write my thoughts down. starting with ako toga više neće biti.
(as with other joker out songs, i'm not touching the lyrics bc i don't speak the language myself, i'll leave the lyrical analysis to those who do)
this song sounds sort of unpolished and rough around the edges and i absolutely love that, so so so much. especially the beginning sounds like a song played by some obscure band in the back of a bar - and i mean that in the best way possible. i mean that the song immediately has like an atmosphere to it, lots and lots of feeling. it builds a picture, it sounds smoky and hazy to me, and i adore that.
this is like the sister song of everybody’s waiting to me. the influences are similar, sort of 60’s sound, the keyboard elements are similar, and there’s similar emotional build in this. and if you don’t know how much i love everybody’s waiting, you can read about it here. but these two songs go hand in hand to me, and they feel so home-like to me. i love being in the musical world and in the emotional space both of these songs create. they’re beautiful.
i love that this song doesn’t go the most expected routes, but it also never gets too wacky.
writing this analysis, i’ve spent hours working on my big käärijä rhyme scheme and flow analysis project today, so i was in the headspace of counting beats and bars. and so i did that with this song too, just to have the different sections written down for myself, and it actually really helped me to appreciate the structure of the song.
what i noticed is that they keep the song very lively and interesting by interjecting small sections that are different from everything around them.
the first verse stays one way, one type of sound, until we get to “Pa da otvoriš vrata kô da ništa nije bilo” which is a different section, half the length of the part that came before it. we stop for a wee bit, to sort of take a breath and look at where we are.
and then we go again. and we get a section that again, stays one way, one type of sound, until we get to “Da se grlimo i ljubimo, grlimo i ljubimo, I da si šapćemo da se volimo, I da se sprdamo i smejemo dok si noge grejemo” which has it’s own sound, different to anything before it, most notably because of Bojan’s delivery. so we’ve already had like four different types of sections before the chorus, and interestingly, they weren’t all equal in length, which keeps the listener engaged. smart!
they keep this structure up throughout the whole song. mini transitions here and there that keep you engaged. i especially love both the guitar solo and the instrumental transition bit that comes right after it. you wouldn’t expect the keyboard to come forward like that after the solo, i think it’s a brilliant choice compositionally.
and then the chorus! the chorus sort of.. starts and then starts again. fascinating! so we get “Ako toga više neće biti, Ljubav je najobičnija laž” and then we get one count of four beats of just instrumental, and it feels like we’re building. and then, the same lyric again, almost like we’re starting the chorus again, “Ako toga više neće biti” and so are we going to get the same section again? no! straight into a key change and a musical direction we haven’t heard before. the two bits in the chorus, that both start with “ako toga”, are different from one another in a way that you wouldn’t necessarily expect the first time. and i really really love that, when music takes you on a journey, and you don’t know what the next turn is going to be.
love love love the solo btw, i only wish it was a wee bit louder in the mix.
this is a brilliant sound, they are all absolutely shining on this track. but i have to highlight one member above the others, i’m sorry.
it’s bojan.
first of all, i’m blindly believing this post that says he played the drums, i don’t know the source but i think it was questions directly at them somewhere..? anyway the reason why i’m perfectly willing to believe it is because listening to this song, i thought okay either jure is an absolute magician in creating wildly different sounds on the kit, or this isn’t him. because the drums sound.. sloppy. and again, i mean that in the best possible way. because it fits the overall sound so flipping well. they need to be like this. the drums need to be a wee bit rough and a wee bit “lazy” if you will. those are all things that the sound of the song needs. excellent excellent work there. and he’s not too shabby on the drums at all, there are some excellent cymbal details going on especially towards the end. amazing. and i do not doubt jure’s ability to recreate this sound live, but i think it’s very fitting that bojan played on the album.
and his vocal performance. 10/10 no notes. absolute perfection. exactly what the song needs. so much emotion, so many different emotions packed into the vocal performance, but not too much, he’s not trying to sell us the feeling, he’s just… feeling it himself, and the feeling transfers. i don’t even speak the language, but the feeling transfers. it’s a powerful vocal delivery and i adore him for it.
so all in all, one of my favourite tracks off the album. love it, love it, love it, and bojan in particular deserves a big hug and smooch for this.

BET YOU DIDN'T EXPECT ME SO SOON
I did the dessert vampires playlist first since it was the shortest!
Stampede- very good interplay with the characters. Gives the vibe of I respect you but we fundamentally disagree on some big issues. Would be fun to play in the background of like a joint operation scheme? like they've gone undercover at a fancy party and this is them working together during it
Vulture- this is such a Shadow backstory song like- i don't know exactly what happens with GUN and Maria in this au but THIS is the song you play to express his feelings. The first verse at least low-key also sounds like Knuckles during or immediately post transformation to Rouge. He's very angy
Welcome to the Circus- a jaunty little tune. bar/saloon coded, probably plays wherever Amy works i think?
Recommend songs for this playlist: Desperado by Rhianna and maybe the entire Anti album based on vibes alone.
Blood Like Lemonade- strong vibes
Trouble Valerie Broussard- more Rouge centric i think
For other playlists:
Like a Vampire Catrien Maxwell, for vamp au Sonic
A Little Wicked - im thinking of Rouge for it but if it fits a different character i wouldn't be surprised
Little Girl Gone Chinchilla - very vamp au Shadow coded imo
Eve Precious Pepala- Shadow coded
All up in your mind- feels like Shadow thinking about Sonic's effect on him in vamp au
Hope these are good and have a nice timezone 🫶🏽. I go to sleep now
~🩸🎵
welcome back fhbghbjfdfdg !!
This playlist is a little more tough to explain bc i havent shared the major plotpoint that changes the whole title of the au fjgfjghf, but ill get there eventually !! Stampede- idrk know how to explain this one beyond its just Them, their conflicts their compromises, how the two are trying to work together in the situation theyre in, big time agree on the respect with huge disagreements tho, thats one of their major sticking points Vulture- RAHHHHHHH THIS IS IS KNUCKLES @ SHADOW !!!!! the entire time its knuckles rage and defiance !!! and im slamming my head into a wall so fucking hard i prommy it makes so much sense when i share the plot Welcome to the circus- its a rouge @ knuckles song ! like i said the subject itself is kinda weak but it hits on some of their core dynamic pieces --- Desperado- this one i could see being very rouge @ shadow but its a bit too forward and honest ! rouge would defo more take the angle of "im following you bc ur hopeless without me <3" Blood Like Lemonade- strong vibes on its own but doesnt particularly fit with anyone at least right now, i might come back to it after fleshing more people out (also i am sadly biased against songs that are kinda slow sob. i need that constant stimulation music {i almost didnt include vulture in the playlist bc of its speed but it was just too accurate and picks up with some heavy hitting stuff near the end}) Trouble- very correct w the rouge part !! defo eying this one up in consideration
---
Like a Vampire- defo not vampire au sonic , it actually lines up more with desert vampires rouge (i adore the singers voice btw omg) idk if its going in any of the au playlists but it sure is going in mine ! dfhhdfhg A little wicked- shrug tbh ! i see it for rouge but it feels like its missing something, her spunk, her 4kids saxaphone (im assuming if you dont specify an au you just mean for the canon gamers !) Little Girl Gone- THIS IS SO VAMPIRE AU SHADOWCORE LITTLE UNHINGED BASTARD !!! the blood on my teeth line caught my attention....and then the screaming part sold me HDSHDHF hes sooo silly <333
Eve- im so sorry im really biased against love songs so i dont see it personally !! esp not for shadow </3 All up in your mind- eeh there are a few lines there that work, but overall just misses slightly. big fan of the idea that shadows just making up all those lines tho and sonics never said any of it, thats funny fdgjfjdgfg i feel bad for not enjoying all of them wahh, but i am just really picky tbh,,, its gotta bounce the braincell right... but i appreciate the suggestions sm!!!! tyyy!! have a good sleep !!!

I agree, we're gonna have to agree to disagree, but just to give you my final opinion on these things... I don't think Matty would share location with anyone 😅 plus the bar said that Joe was the guy that went there and sharing your location is something you do when you're in a long term relationship, not when you dated for 1 month... She broke uo with Joe but still expected him to fight for her, at least a little, so 6 weeks after breaking up a 6 years relationship is normal to feel these things... Btw not a Joe widow at all, can't stand that guy after what happened, just my thoughts 😂
About ICDWABH , I think this part in the first chorus "He said he'd love me all his life" is Joe and the second chorus "He said he'd love me for all time" is Matty to say that she's broken from both of them. But that second verse is all Joe "I can hold my breath, I've been doing it since he left. I keep finding his things in drawers."
Joe lived in her houses for 6 years, she wouldn't find much in her drawers that belong to Matty...
it wasn’t a bar, it’s a PUB (there’s a pretty big difference) and they said Joe and Taylor BOTH went there. They also launched a Swiftie themed menu. Joe himself says he never goes there. So idk. The odds of a sit down pub playing a very arbitrary song that Matty has PUBLICLY loved (and actually when he covered it he dedicated it to people in their 30s which makes the whole bit about “she’s too young to know the song” really hit home) are much lower than an emo bar playing it (still not high but easier to imagine and Matty literally had a much younger gf when he played Cork). Matty and Taylor clearly had a long and complicated thing - they didn’t just date for one month so I can absolutely believe he shared his location with her because per TTPD he also told Lucy he’d kill himself if she left him.
I don’t get the sense of you widowing, I get the sense you’re blaming random shit he didn’t do on Joe lol because you don’t want Matty to have mattered but Matty did matter. Matty did promise to marry her. Matty said (or implied) he was braver than Joe. Matty and her discussed kids. Matty promised her he’d changed. She was willing to blow her entire life up FOR MATTY and then he just dipped lol which absolutely BROKE her.
if you’re gonna hate someone for what they did, hate Matty (also unfair because idk he’s a pretty fucked up dude who was in a fucked up situation and confused clearly). Joe was just a crummy boyfriend lol 🤷🏻‍♀️ Matty legit HURT her.
also Matty famously leaves his shit everywhere (with exes too but also the typewriter from TTPD?) and we KNOW he left his vintage Beatles T-shirt at hers because she wore it post breakup so yeah I believe she kept finding his shit and I think that was very disconcerting. A lot of Joe’s shit would’ve been joint shit nobody really knew who it belonged to by that stage, or would’ve been collected (clothes, accessories, tech items he’d bought and cared about etc). Finding Matty’s crap would’ve been a legit jump scare.
I do, however, find your “he said he’d love me for all time”/“he said he loved me all the time” as about two different people interesting and I like it. I still think it’s all about Matty because he did say he’d love her for all time lol he promised to marry her??? Clearly he said he’d love her forever????? But I’m into complicating interpretations and that is complicated and interesting.

i saw that post about what rookie exo were capable of and i hate how shady people are towards suho in the tags because chenbaeksoo overshadow him… just because they’re better vocalists doesn’t mean he sucks or is “mediocre at everything”.
oh, lmao. huh. i don't really give those people much thought, to be honest, but i understand your aggravation. that baby don't cry performance in particular (and those 55 seconds) is, of course, very much about kyungsoo and baekhyun having all but a sing off in the adlibs. but that isn't the only thing happening; there are of course chanyeol and junmyeon as well, who, while kyungsoo and baekhyun are adlibbing for their lives, are harmonizing with the others and carrying the melody. doing that might seem easy but is not, especially not to someone untrained. the fact that, as rookies, exo were able to harmonize with each other like that and perform live like that is quite an achievement. only a handful groups could do that. it's pretty much unparalleled in that regard.
that said, it's quite funny. i remember when i watched the other performance, where jongdae is included, before i ever was a proper exol, and my first commentary was that jongdae actually oversings quite a lot. he did that back in the day, as did baekhyun to a certain extent (but less so). in my opinion, the most tonally solid and musical singer out of all of exo was kyungsoo at that point. they have all grown out of their more obvious mistakes, especially jongdae; at this point i would consider him the best vocalist in exo. kyungsoo and baekhyun both have an unrivaled musicality though, and kyungsoo only ever gets the short end of the stick because his voice sits lower than jongdae's and baekhyun's so he rarely gets the highest adlibs (which means people don't care about him as a vocalist as much, lol). his riffs are bar none, and let's not forget the day he made the others his back up singers at MAMA 2014. (i listen to his live recording of tell me what is love religiously. it is one of the most stunning performances anyone has ever done, imo. the fact that yoo youngjin did this with him? with a rookie? insanity. that is a testament to how good kyungsoo is.)
anyways, junmyeon. people don't care about vocalists that aren't super flashy, so this is never a surprise to me. i have talked about how vocally skilled junmyeon is multiple times; he is a renowned musical actor, after all. that alone should tell you everything you need to know about how good of a singer he is. junmyeon has this high, lyrical tenor that is less nasal than baekhyun's. to me, it's always like a bell ringing, like, that's how crystal clear he sounds. his vocal quality is kind of insanely underrated. when he delivers his adlibs in tempo, for example, they sound crazily effortless and so laid back and easy, as opposed to what baekhyun and jongdae are doing (which serves a different purpose and isn't any less good). like. we are talking about the man who crammed not one but two key changes into his 10 second verse in the eve at the top of the show. (the eve is one of my top 3 exo songs btw.) that isn't just something anyone can do. it requires a certain tonality, and junmyeon has tonality in spades, which i find very envious. he is very rarely off-key, and when i saw him live he wasn't pitchy once. his soundcheck was incredibly good. so, like. evidently i can talk about this kinda forever? but where to stop? the baseline is that these people refuse to give junmyeon the flowers he deserves because he isn't as centered as chenbaeksoo but that doesn't make him any worse of a singer. he is far from mediocre, lmao. he is a very, very good singer. in any other group, junmyeon would be a main vocal. exo is just an embarrassment of riches.

Always
A/N: This is Rami!Freddie and not actual, real life Freddie, just btw. And also, the songs are obviously not mine, by any means. Anyways! My first new story on my brand new writing account! Dedicated to my muse and best friend, @fahrenheit39, Shay, thank you so much for all of the encouragement and listening to my panic about dumb things like historical accuracy and not being able to title things even slightly. I honestly don’t know what I would do without you.
Warnings: Just some swearing!
Also, again, as incredible as likes are, reblogs are fuel, guys. I would love to write another part but if no one really cares, then there’s really no reason to carry on with it.
Tumblr media
“Oi, Fred, remember when that used to be us up on small stages in tiny bars?” Roger asked, nudging his friend with his elbow. Freddie looked up at the group of girls on stage, tuning their instruments. His eyes landed on the girl seated at a piano, her fingers moving silently over the keys, her face scrunched up as she focused. “Freddie?” Freddie’s eyes snapped back to Roger.
“Sorry,” Freddie muttered, glancing back at the stage. “Yeah, I remember those days.” Roger opened his mouth to speak but Freddie shushed him as the girl started to speak.
“I think most of you know us but, for any fresh faces in the crowd, I’m Katelyn Evans, on piano and the lead singer, we’ve got Iris Stewart on the guitar, our drummer Nancy Sanderson, and, last but certainly not least, our bass player, Georgiana Adams and this is King. This first song is called ‘Always’,” she began, glancing out into the crowd. Freddie found himself mesmerized by the girl as she played a few notes on the piano before gently playing the first chord of the song.
When the world gets too heavy Put it on my back I'll be your levy You are taking me apart Like bad glue On a get well card
Freddie stayed staring at her, transfixed by her quiet voice. Even with her voice as soft as it was, he could feel the power she was holding back as she reached the chorus.
It was always you Falling for me Now there's always time Calling for me I'm the light blinking at the end of the road Blink back, to let me know
“She’s so soft,” Brian whispered, careful not to attract the attention of any other table. Freddie shot him a glare before turning his attention back to the stage. As the chorus ended a third time, the girl’s hands stopped playing the piano, her hands falling to her lap as she reached the bridge.
I'm the light blinking at the end of the road Blink back, to let me know That I'm skin and bone
Freddie sucked in a breath at the emotion in her voice and evident on her face as she brushed a strand of dark hair away from her face.
Just a king and rusty throne Oh, the castle's under siege But the sign outside says 'leave me alone'
Freddie grinned as her voice faded back down to the same soft tone from before for the final chorus before the music stopped and she rose from the piano bench as the applause started. “Alright, guys, we’ll be right back,” she grinned once the clapping had subsided and hopped down from the stage to wander over to the bar top.
“Freddie, where’re ya going?” John asked. Freddie hadn’t even realized he’d stood up until John mentioned it. Freddie waved him off.
“I’ll be back,” he muttered, weaving his way through the bar to talk to her. She smiled at the bartender and Freddie couldn’t help how his heart leapt at the sight.
“Thank you,” Kate murmured, laying down some money for the drink.
“How would you and your band like to open for Queen on their next tour?” Kate sighed and rolled her eyes, turning to look at the man behind her, a scowl on her face. She froze once her eyes met his dark brown eyes, his lips curved up and covering his protruding teeth.
“Holy hell, you’re Freddie Mercury,” she breathed, pushing a strand of dark hair behind her ear again. Freddie laughed, his eyes lighting up in the dim light of the bar.
“I am. And you have a gorgeous voice, miss...” he paused, raising an eyebrow at Kate.
“Katelyn. But you can call me Kate. My friends all do,” she paused, her eyes going wide, “if you want to! Just whatever works for me.” She mentally kicked herself. Her she was, standing in front of Freddie Mercury and babbling like a fool.
“Kate. It’s a pleasure to meet you, my love,” Freddie replied, grinning down at her. “Anyways, what do you say? Care to open for Queen on our next tour?”
“This is really just for fun,” Kate replied, with a shrug. She heard an exasperated noise from behind her and turned to find her drummer, Nancy, looking at her in exasperation.
“What she means is ‘if this is a serious offer, of course, we’d be thrilled to do it but we can discuss it after we play this last song’,” Nancy interjected, grabbing Kate’s hand to drag her back up to the stage. “What are you doing?? Why would we not want to open for Queen? That’s fucking huge, Katelyn!” Kate rolled her eyes before turning to face the crowd with a smile.
“Alright, same as before, same people, same band, you guys get the drill. Anyways, this next song is called ‘You Should See Me In A Crown’,” Kate began, grabbing the microphone stand with removing the mic with ease. Freddie noticed her eyes scanning the crowd before finding Freddie back at his table with his band mates, his eyes still glued to her. She smirked, giving him a wink.
“Ready, Katiecat?” Kate rolled her eyes at the nickname before she smiled again, glancing back at Nancy.
“Let’s do it,” she replied, smirking. Nancy nodded as she baseline started up. Kate took a deep breath before she turned to face the crowd once more, her eyes once again landing on Freddie.
Bite my tongue, bide my time Wearing a warning sign Wait 'til the world is mine Visions I vandalize Cold in my kingdom size Fell for these ocean eyes
Freddie could have melted right there at seeing her on the stage, her makeup dark and her posture relaxed and seductive as she moved around the stage, her eyes never leaving his. He could have drowned in their blue depths, more mesmerizing than the ocean’s waves.
You should see me in a crown I'm gonna run this nothing town Watch me make 'em bow One by one by, one One by one by You should see me in a crown Your silence is my favorite sound Watch me make 'em bow One by one by, one One by one by (one)
Kate grinned as the second verse started, watching as Freddie leaned forward in a daze. She turned to shoot a wink at Georgie, the younger girl rolling her eyes at her friend’s antics.
Count my cards, watch them fall Blood on a marble wall I like the way they all Scream Tell me which one is worse Living or dying first Sleeping inside a hearse I don't dream
Kate sat down on the edge of the stage, taking a deep breath. She closed her eyes to settle herself before opening them again to find Freddie.
You say
Come over baby
I think you're pretty
I'm okay
I'm not your baby
If you think I'm pretty
As the bridge ended, Kate jumped back up to her feet, smirking again as the chorus started back up.
You should see me in a crown I'm gonna run this nothing town Watch me make 'em bow One by one by, one One by one by You should see me in a crown Your silence is my favorite sound Watch me make 'em bow One by one by, one One by one by (one)
Freddie watched as she repeated the chorus, her eyes finally leaving his as she went back to scanning the room. The song ended to a round of applause. Freddie grinned. “I have an idea, boys. We go back on tour in, what? Three weeks?” John, Brian, and Roger regarded their lead singer warily.
“And? What of it?” Brian asked, raising an eyebrow.
“We don’t have an opening act yet, do we?”
“You’ve heard two of their songs! Two, Freddie!” Roger started, rolling his eyes.
“Hush, darling,” Freddie interjected, effectively shushing Roger as Kate, Iris, Nancy, and Georgie cut through the bar to reach their table.
“So. Against my better judgement, here we are. Are you serious about this opening act thing?” Kate began, crossing her arms over her chest.
“As the plague, darling,” he stood up, turning to glance at his band mates. John sighed, shrugging.
“We all know that once Freddie puts his mind to something, there’s very little use in trying to stop him.” Roger sighed.
“Fine! Whatever. We all know Freddie will pull whatever strings he has to in order to accomplish this,” Roger agreed, throwing up his hands in defeat.
“Alright, alright. If the rest of the band agrees, might as well just give in, yeah?” Brian conceded, with a shrug. Freddie gave them a smug smile as he turned to face Kate.
“Say yes. What have you got to lose?”
