Feng Shui for spiritual growth
Feng Shui for spiritual growth
Most people turn to Feng Shui because they want to enhance career success, good health, happy relationship, and resolve any issues beyond their control. Beyond all the obvious benefits, Feng Shui can be a spiritual practice, keep you balanced and grounded. Here we have 7 tips about Feng Shui for enhancing your spiritual growth.
Watch our video for Feng Shui and spiritual growth
Tip 1: Feng Shui is about energy and understanding the law of nature.
In a very simplified sense, Feng Shui is about energy. Everything has energy in this world. If we slow down and pay attention, we can usually “feel” or “sense” the energy from our surroundings. If we learn the law of nature and the energy cycle, we can go with the flow, or even manipulate the energy in our favor.
The Taoism
No matter what school of Feng Shui you follow, the basic theory originated from the Yin/Yang, Five elements, 8 trigrams, and 64 hexagrams. That is also the basic theory of Taoism. Taoism can be either philosophy or religion. The essential theory of Taoism is to live peacefully with nature and go with the flow.
A Taoist live in harmony with nature instead of trying to change the world by drastic actions. It can seem too passive in the modern world, but you get inner peace when you observe the world and choose your path to align with the world around you.
So tip number one is to observe the world, learn how energy interacts, and see the cycle of luck. When we learn to detach our emotions and see the bigger picture objectively, we can live peacefully. Good luck comes and goes, and life goes up and down. Nothing stays the same forever, yet everything has a permanent effect.
Tip 2: Feng Shui is a practice of being mindful and aware of our current position.
Feng Shui is a practice, just like a doctor practices his or her medicine. It is about being mindful every day about your surroundings.
There is no shortcut or finishing line. You can set up a perfect Feng Shui today, but the energy will change over time and the Feng Shui needs to be adjusted too.
We live in an imperfect world and it is ok to have imperfect Feng Shui. Your current space might be too small or in the wrong location, but not much you can change at the moment. Just be aware of our current situation, and find ways to improve next time. We learn and grow each day, a little bit at a time.
By observing mindfully, we learn our strengths and weaknesses, and our current position in the world. Next is to turn any negative into positive, amplify our strong points at the right time, and work on our weaknesses to avoid any trouble.
It works for both our house and ourselves. Stay mindful, focus on the positive, and work on any issues at the same time.
Tip 3: Set up a centralized spiritual space to meditate and connect with your inner self.
Setting up a dedicated space is an easy way to stay consistent about meditation or listening to your inner voice. It can be a spiritual altar or just a small quiet corner to get away from a busy day.
The personal spiritual space can be as big or as small as you like. Arrange and add items that keep you calm and inspired. Maybe your book collection, music, candle, crystal, flower, art, and so on.
We tend to be conditioned by our environment. If we are looking for peace and clarity, set a space that makes you feel that way, and visit it regularly.
In this space, we can be true to ourselves. We can pray, meditate, dream, journal, or do nothing at all. It is a place of reflection and retreat for yourself. It might sound selfish but we all deserve to take care of ourselves first.
Tip 4: Cherish and take care of what you have. Start here and now.
Any journey starts from here and now. We need to accept where we are and embrace who we are first. So often we focus on the end goals and what we don’t have now and lose touch with reality. Then, we can get resentful or depressed easily for what we don’t have.
No matter how much money you have, what house you live in, what job you have, or what kind of relationship you are in right now, we are responsible for all of them. We made our choices in the past that lead to our current situation. There will be mistakes and what-ifs, but we can not change the past.
Accepting our current situation is the first step for change. If you are not satisfied with a certain area of your life, you can take action and learn to do things differently.
Cherish our fortune and more fortune will follow. When we admit all our mistakes and weakness, we have the power to change and grow. We are no longer victims.
Tip 5: Surround yourself with positive energy. Get rid of the outdated and bring in inspiring items.
Back to the practical part of Feng Shui, you can simply surround yourself with positive energy. It is similar to setting up your spiritual space, you can move around furniture, change colors, declutter, organize, and bring in items that actually inspire you and make you happy.
You do not need to hire a fancy designer to transform your interior, even though it can be a good option. The point is to clean up and update the space regularly to reflect the best of you. Your home should nurture your dreams. If you love music, have music played in the house frequently. If you love cooking, organize the kitchen to reflect your taste. If you love gardening, make space for it too. If you love books, showcase your book collection and make it a focus.
The minimal interior
Another idea is to keep it simple. Most of us have too much stuff in our home and that can create chaos. That is why the minimalist interior is so popular these years. We crave a simple, uncluttered space with plenty of room to grow.
Some popular Feng Shui suggestions to bring in good energy include,
Open up windows and set up good lighting.
Display artwork or sculptures that inspire you.
Candle, incense, or essential oil room spray for a good smell.
Display traditional Feng Shui lucky items such as crystals, jade, Pi Xiu, Qi Lin, dragon, horse, and so on.
Let the room filled with beautiful music or the sound of windchime sometimes.
Anything you love and brings you joy.
Tip 6: Northeast is generally related to spiritual growth.
Northeast is usually the direction that is associated with spiritual growth. It is also related to “Mountain” in Bagua and “Earth element” in the 5 elements. Adding a picture of a mountain, using the color yellow or brown, and display earthware here is a good idea to enhance this corner.
The water element is also related to spiritual growth and a clear mind. So the color blue or black is also a good choice.
In the BTB school of Feng Shui, spiritual growth is related to the bottom left corner of the feng shui map. That is on the left side near the door right after you walk into the house. See the picture below.
The direction is only for reference, you can be spiritual in any direction with any of the five elements.
Feng Shui is a tool only and it should not confuse you or limit you in any way. If in doubt, go with your own intuition and common sense.
Tip 7: Cultivate your good fortune by sharing and giving what you have.
The last tip here is very simple. If all feng shui calculation and planning don’t work, or issues that are beyond your ability to change, it is always advised to focus on helping other people.
There are many people that are less fortunate than us, and we can easily help them in many forms. It can be a donation of money, time, or sharing your skill, knowledge, or even just kind words. By making a difference in other people’s lives, you are cultivating your good luck.
You probably won’t see any immediate return, but the act of kindness is the start of a positive cycle. It can empower you and shift your perspective. Even if we do not get any return, we feel peace of mind.
Doing good deeds and help others will eventually bounce the good fortune back to you, even though that is not a goal anymore. In traditional Feng Shui, people believe real good fortune comes from generations of good deeds and charity work. So if you want to increase your luck, help others first. That is the secret of good fortune.

THE INDIVIDUAL, THE ANTI-UNIVERSAL. “All that is individual, incomplete, diverse is claimed to be merely preliminary, superficial and inadequate,” wrote Austrian-born British philosopher Sir Karl R. Popper. What he meant by that was that totalitarian systems, which strive for unity and wholeness, perceive plurality and individuality as a threat. Another philosopher, François Jullien, identified “the Universal” as the foundation of such closed systems: “The Universal considers itself as complete, as a final achievement, and it no longer asks whether something might be missing; it rests in its positivity and sees no reason for further progress. It does not initiate anything anymore.” A static Universal, doomed to stand still: Nothing happens anymore. Open societies need the Individual, it is the only possibility for plurality to develop. What is this Individual, what does it do? It is non-static, constantly in motion, constantly changing, standing out from the Uniform, constantly questioning itself. It is the only way for new things to arise, it is the only way to escape what author Juli Zeh, in her novel “Unterleuten”, called a “brave new world - standardized, entertained, administered; a herd of citizens”. Where does one find one’s Individual, which leads to plurality, openness, and eventually to something new? Frequently, it can be found in the gap, in the “active, inventive Between” (see posting “The Between”), and it is always located outside the Uniform, outside the herd that never asks why. new song in the draft... (1)
Tap… Tap… Tap…
He sighs. Puts a finger on the keyboard, presses one of the keys, it just does not match, does not sound like he wants it to sound. He leans back, sighs again. The ceiling looks unbelievable lonely, the only thing up on there is the lamp, the lamp who only shines a little bit of light over this dark room. He wonders, maybe he should decorate it, make the ceiling more beautiful, he could put stickers of stars, paint stars? He used to paint, maybe he should start again? Or he could put those glow-in-the-dark star stickers up on there? Then when he turns off the light there would still be a bit light and that could bring him inspiration?
Attention.
He looks down at the keyboard again, the messy papers with the messy handwriting on them, oh what to do, he’s a terrible song writer, isn’t he? He’s been doing this for years, trying to write and compose songs, at some point in his life he thought he was good enough to post them on SoundCloud, did that ever make him big? No. Thank god he stopped. It led to him getting noticed by LMS Ent. And he became the songwriter of BTB, but what? His and their songs never became successful, only their Japanese songs which he didn’t compose nor write became successful, so all in all Sangho is a failure. He looks down at the floor, it doesn’t look as empty as the ceiling, yet it feels like there’s nothing there. His head looks up, his look shifts to the ceiling once more, maybe he shouldn’t ever have come to Korea? Maybe it would’ve just been better staying in Denmark? He feels the tears pressing on, they press on so much, it’s like nowadays Sangho can’t write a song without crying and having a mental breakdown. He breathes, breathes slowly, he doesn’t want to cry.
2+2=4 4+4=8 8+8=16 16+16=32 32+32=64 64+64=128
He blinks, the urge to cry is gone. Sangho’s first boyfriend always told him that when sad, when on the edge to crying then he should solve math problems, that would distract him from crying, and Sangho has now used that advice for a couple of years. For a second he wonders if he’ll ever be able to date again, he never officially came out as gay when in Denmark, and he only realized his sexuality at the age of sixteen, he’s sure of the fact that he’s gay, but… He’s not so sure if he’s able to tell it to people, especially not over here, not in a country that is even less accepting than Denmark, Denmark is an accepting country, Sangho was just scared back then. Korea isn’t like Denmark, so now Sangho is scared again. Even if Sangho met a cute guy, the chance of them actually liking guys too is too slim, Sangho will probably be single his whole life unless he decides to move back to Denmark, how sad… Maybe that is why this is going so badly? How is he going to write love songs, when he has to pull out old memories to remember what it felt like being in love, he hasn’t had that feeling in years, the feeling of actually liking someone, how can one write about something they can’t even fully remember?
But it isn’t that easy, Sangho can’t just go out and fall in love so he can write somewhat prober songs again, he either has to remember the feeling of being in love and heartbreaks, or he’ll simply just have to start writing songs about something different than love.
He hears a weird sound, turns around immediately on the chair, it’s coming from the door, Sangho wonders what the hell it is, he swear to god he locked his apartment door, nobody has the chance of getting inside, so what the hell is outside his door? He stands up, walks over to the door and when he opens it gets happy surprise. He sits down, drives a hand over the fur of his pet “Hej Måne, er du kommet for at hjælpe mig med at skrive?” he smiles, looks at his cute pet. He looks at his dog, and then an idea pops into his mind, he drives another hand over it, pets it under its ears like it usually likes “tak Måne”. He stands up, walks over to his chair again and turns around on it so he faces his keyboard. Måne walks with him, plays up at his leg, and Sangho lets his finger be places on the keyboard, and then he plays the same melody from before.
Og jeg der var så ung Jeg troede, vi sku' vær' De første kærester på månen Men vores himmelrum Var lige nu og her Så vi holdt bare verden gående
He smiles, it sounds somewhat good, he immediately picks up his pen, writes the words down as he remembers them, and then adds a few more words to it. He quickly places a hand on Måne, pets him lightly “Alright Måne, nu har vi omkvædet”, his fingers go back to the keyboard, he starts over, plays the melody that is now well remembered by his fingers.
He leans back, words sound somewhat good, and he’s actually kind of satisfied with how the words sounds next to each other, surely Sangho does not have the best voice, but even with his non-perfect singing voice the song sounds somewhat good, and he’s actually satisfied with what he has so far. He looks up into the ceiling, tries to figure out words that will fit together.
Og jeg der var så klog Jeg troede fuldt og fast At vi ku' gå gennem ild og vand.
No, that doesn’t sound good, it’s too long, too complicated too—
Og jeg der var så klog Jeg troede fuldt og fast At vi ku' gå være evigt.
No. Too sad, not what he’s looking for… if just he could come up with a somewhat okay idea…
Og jeg der var så klog Jeg troede fuldt og fast At vi ku' gå til verdens ende.
Perfect. Sounds exactly like how he wants it to sound, now just put that together with the first verse, the chorus and we got basically half a song. Sangho writes the words down, hurriedly, and then again places fingers on the keyboard, once again plays the melody.
Too short… The second verse is too short… but how can Sangho make it longer? Hmm…
Og jeg der var så klog Jeg troede fuldt og fast At vi ku' gå til verdens ende. Men vores drejebog Blev skrevet i al hast Vi havde ikke lært at vente.
It sounds… Good… yet not perfect… Sangho wants more, something that sounds perfect, words that are melodies, come perfect together. He looks at Måne, what if…? “Jeg har det Måne!”
Og jeg der var så klog Jeg troede fuldt og fast At vi ku' gå på vandet Men vores drejebog Blev skrevet i al hast Det ene ord tog det andet
Perfect, exactly what he was looking for, now just add that with the first, put the chorus afterwards and…
…
…
…
“Huh?” he looks around, weirded out by the setting, his neck hurts, everything hurts, he must’ve slept terribly. He sits up, looks at the keyboard which his head had been placed on in his sleep, did he fall asleep? How late was he up…? He looks at the floor, papers are all over it, he picks one up, reads the words in his head, was this a song he played yesterday? When his fingers briefly touch the keyboard he remembers the melody from the night before, the words, what he was doing, he places the paper so he can see the lyrics, and he places his fingers on the keyboard, let’s try this out, see if he wrote a somewhat decent song.
Oh… that sounds okay… at least Sangho is kind of satisfied, it just needs a name, he looks through the lyrics, it isn’t too hard to pick out a title. Måne runs into the room, Sangho turns his head “Hej Måne”.
He stands up, perhaps it’s time to go and get ready for work.
“De første kærester på månen” he says out loud, that’ll be the name of the song.
De første kærester på månen.

Self Help Fest
In the first half of this year, I read 27 books. Twelve of those were non-fiction books that I think qualify as “self help.” Maybe a better way of describing these books is to say they are for my personal or professional development, but isn’t that just trying to put a spin on the fact that I am, in fact, trying to help my Self. I have always enjoyed this type of book ever since I read I’m Okay, You’re Okay in high school. I have seriously considered joining or starting a Self Help book club. Here are the books and how much they helped me. (All book title headers in this post are links!)
Sabbatical from YES by Christi Daniels
This book is written by my dear friend Christi. She’s an amazing woman who has found her calling helping other women tap into their own amazingness. I have worked with Christi’s coaching before and I feel like I am pretty good at saying NO, so I wondered how much more I could gain from reading her book. Lots! This is a workshop in book form and it will be as helpful as you let it be by taking her advice and trying out her suggestions. Will your family think you are crazy if they walk in while you are practicing your power pose? Just explain that they should try it too! One of my favorite sections is when she contrasts synthetic vs true pleasure. I believe her when she says we all need an infusion of vitamin P (pleasure.) She says,”It is our right and duty to soak up as much real and sacred pleasure as we can.” Yes, please! Sometimes in life we just need a reminder or “permission.” Granted! So many yummy tidbits in this book. Get it, do the work, see for yourself!
You Are a Badass Every Day by Jen Sincero
This book is meant to be a daily reader that you peruse and ponder, but I got it from the library, so I only had 14 days to read it. This is the third Jen Sincero book that I’ve read in the past year-ish. Last year I read both You Are a Badass and You Are a Badass at Making Money I think the money one was my favorite, because it had less rehashing of some of the same “positive vibe” stuff that I get from a lot of sources. It’s always good to have those positive vibes reinforced, but there does tend to be a lot of overlap in this genre. The money making perspective was a refreshing change. And we have to change the way that we as women think and talk about money. I can’t recall if Sincero gives the old “latte” advise or not, but at least she’s a woman talking about money. #props The Every Day book is nice short snippets and my favorite piece of advice involves driving away from civilization, rolling up your car windows, and screaming bloody murder at the top of your lungs for three whole minutes. Try it.
Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin
This is another of my annual re-reads. This book had a profound effect on my life a few years ago and put me in the right frame of mind to start Bright Line Eating. Understanding myself as a Rebel help me feel less frustration with myself. BTB also introduces a lot of either/or scenarios that help me understand more about myself and others. For instance, did you know we aren’t all morning people? Did you know it’s easier for some people to abstain from something entirely (like sugar) than it is for them to moderate their intake? I’ve been through this book 3 or 4 times now, but I always benefit from listening to it again.
The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin
This is a newer book where Gretchen takes a deep dive into each of her Four Tendencies. You get further details on the strengths and weaknesses of each tendency, and explanations of how those two are usually the same thing. There are also great tips on how your tendency typically interacts with others in certain relationships. For instance, my spouse is also a Rebel… I gained some valuable insight there! This one really begs to be owned as a sort of reference manual. You will want this at your fingertips for when you are trying to figure people out. Rubin is good about reminding us that this is only one aspect of a person’s personality, but it covers a lot of ground. Start with Better Than Before, then this one. You can thank me later.
Dark Horse by Todd Rose and Ogi Ogas
Dark Horse was recommended to me because of my aforementioned Rebel tendency. This book is about people who work around the “standardization covenant” to pursue fulfillment and thereby gain their own version of “success.” I loved it, but one time through is not going to be enough. Originally, I got DH from the library, but soon I was downloading it from Audible so I can listen on repeat until it all sinks in. This is a different paradigm and there are a lot of deep-seated ideas that are hard to overcome, even if they are making us miserable. I am one of those people who has no idea what my purpose in life is, so I need to spend a lot more time on that chapter about micro-motives. If you are unhappy with the daily grind, I highly recommend this one for you.
Get Your Sh*t Together by Sarah Knight
The best thing about this book was that it really made me feel like I have my sh*t together. I think the target audience for this book is slightly younger than I am. Obviously I chose this book because I felt like I needed to get it together, but much of the advice was stuff I could put a check mark next to because I am already doing it. My least favorite part was probably the section giving weight loss advice from someone who hasn’t had a real struggle in this area. The “all things in moderation” advice is out of date. Sarah Knight needs to read Better Than Before and recognize that people are different and what works for some people won’t work for all people. She also gives the “skip the latte” line around money and goes into great detail about how this will get you where you want to go. F that! She doesn’t claim to be an expert in nutrition or finance, so these sections are basically the same-old-same-old regurgitation of the same old advice that hasn’t helped you yet if you are reading a book looking for advice on those things… I do think there is some good stuff in here, especially for people who are able to separate the wheat from the chaff and decide which tips will get them closer to their personal goals. My favorite take-away was the What/Why method… and feeling much better about how together I am. Thank you, Sarah.
The Power of Style by Bobbie Thomas
When I was at the library (one of my happy places) to work on my First Quarter Goal Review, I was pulling books off the shelves that had images that inspire me and reinforce those goals. While I was looking for books on design, architecture, art, and beauty this book called out to me. I took it to the table where I opened and arranged various books while filling out my planner then when it was time to go home I took this book with me. I do not consider myself a stylish person. Having lived nearly all of my adult life overweight, my style has always been if-it-fits-and-it’s-cheap-buy-it. I did have some fun experimenting when I subscribed to Gwynnie Bee for several years, but as soon as I cancelled that I quickly went into “black pants” mode. Bobbie Thomas promised to help me with that, and I like her approach. We often hear that we should dress for the job we want to have, but Bobbie proposes that we dress as the person we want to be. My only problem is that I seldom want to be the same person two days in a row. This book made me think about my style, but I did not become anyone’s favorite style icon overnight. Baby steps, right? I am thinking of investing in some florals. Stay tuned.
Radical Candor by Kim Scott
I mostly skimmed this one, and I never do that with a book. I would suggest getting the Cliffs Notes version of this one. If you like podcasts, they have one. I felt like I didn’t need so many examples. There’s some good stuff in here, but some people will need personality transplants to make it happen. I might be one of those people. I have to admit that this book sparks my perfectionist tendencies and makes me want to analyze every word I say to everyone at work. That’s no way to live.
Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson
This one might not really be a self help book, but Lawson does give some advice for how to live a happy life. Some of the stories are just hilarious. I appreciate Jenny’s candidness about her struggles with mental illness. That is what drew me to this book. That being said, there were at least two things in the book that I think I would have kept to myself if I were her. She didn’t. She lays it all out. I think my favorite take-away from this book was not something of Jenny’s but something that she shares that Neil Gaiman said to her. Of course I’m dreadfully jealous that she gets to say “my friend, Neil” but when she was freaked out and feeling inadequate to the task of reading her own audiobook, he told her to “pretend you’re good at it.” Brilliant!
For other references to Neil Gaiman, who I have talked about in my blog more times than Oscar Wilde, so I should probably change my answer on that “favorite author” thing… I mention him in posts here, here, and here, so far. Sadly, my only reference to Oscar Wilde was here.
Authentic Happiness by Martin E. P. Seligman, Ph.D.
I don’t remember many details about this book, but I gave it four stars on Goodreads, so I must have liked it. Seligman is a big name in positive psychology, so he’s a good resource for this kind of stuff. I think he is so often referenced that I had heard most of his main points before, which may be why I have trouble recalling them now. It can’t hurt to have a refresher on how to actively pursue happiness. I might have to give this one another go.
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
I talked about this book in my post about Audiobooks I Solemnly Swear to Listen to Once Each Year and I started the year with it. I know this book is a little dated, but it has been the go-to resource for everyone who writes books about money, so this gets straight to the source material. My current employer is also one of the great American success stories, so I totally geek out on that part every time. Perhaps my favorite thing about this book is that Hill acknowledges that there’s very little relationship between hard work and monetary reward. I subscribe to the “everything doesn’t always have to be hard” and “flowers don’t *try* to bloom” philosophies. I still think this book is worth repeating until I finally get that mental shift he prescribes. Old ways of thinking die hard.
Dare to Lead by Brene Brown
I like what Brene does, and this book takes some of her best stuff and applies it where it is sorely needed – the workplace. She talks about shifts that need to happen in workplace/corporate culture to make it more conducive to courage and vulnerability. She doesn’t say it, but can we just admit that she’s talking about doing away with toxic masculinity and having a more inclusive culture? Yes, please, thank you. There is also some really good stuff in here about what leadership means and that you do not have to be in a position of authority to be a leader. Years ago when I was a supervisor, I went through a frustrated phase at work. Somehow I got the idea to tell myself every day when I got in the car: I’m not going to work, I’m going to lead. It changed how I viewed my daily responsibilities and was very quickly reflected in my attitude and performance.
Brene also suggests thinking about your core values and narrowing them to just two main ones to focus on. If you read this post, you know that I already have mine narrowed to three. Call me a Rebel, (a la, The Four Tendencies mentioned above,) but I am going to keep all three of mine. It is a good reminder to have a couple (or a few) things to use as filters for what gets into your life. This leads us to BOUNDARIES. When you know your core values and keep them simple, it’s easier to set boundaries and hold yourself and others accountable to maintaining them. This is a fantastic book for an office book club. Highly recommend.
