Edible Insects: The Sustainable Solution to Global Protein Demand Amid Rising Environmental Concerns
Edible Insects Market is expected to reach $17.95 billion by 2033 from an estimated $1.87 billion in 2024, at a CAGR of 28.6% during the forecast period 2024-2033.
The global protein industry, traditionally dominated by livestock meat production, is facing increasing pressure to find sustainable alternatives as environmental concerns intensify. Currently, livestock production accounts for the majority of protein production worldwide, with approximately 70% of agricultural land and 30% of the Earth’s total land dedicated to raising livestock. However, expanding this footprint further is neither practical nor sustainable, given the environmental toll already exacted on natural resources.

The livestock industry is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than all forms of transportation combined, including planes, trains, and automobiles. This significant environmental impact, coupled with the escalating strain on land and water resources, highlights the urgent need for alternative protein sources. In response, high-quality protein derived from edible insects has emerged as a crucial solution, offering a pathway to reduce pollution, limit habitat destruction, and conserve natural resources.
According to the Population Reference Bureau (PRB), the global population is projected to grow by 75 million people annually, reaching 9.9 billion by 2050—a 25.3% increase from approximately 7.9 billion in 2021. This exponential growth is expected to put immense pressure on global food production and supply chains, further amplifying the need for sustainable protein alternatives. Edible insects, rich in protein and essential micronutrients such as iron and zinc, present a viable solution to meet these challenges.
Check complete table of contents with list of table and figures: https://www.meticulousresearch.com/product/edible-insects-market-5156
Furthermore, the rise of health-conscious consumers has created a growing demand for environmentally-friendly, chemical-free meat products. In response, many meat producers are exploring insect-derived feed options, such as Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) protein meal, which provides a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional feed sources like fishmeal and soy. Insects offer a range of environmental advantages, including lower greenhouse gas emissions, reduced water pollution, and minimal land use. For instance, crickets require 12 times less feed, 15 times less land, 2,000 times less water, and produce 100 times fewer greenhouse gas emissions than cattle for the same amount of protein.
Insects can also be raised on food waste, such as banana peels or rice bran, making them an even more attractive solution for sustainable animal feed. As a result, the demand for insect protein has soared, fueling the growth of the edible insect market.
According to a recent report by Meticulous Research®, the global edible insect market is poised for significant expansion. The market is projected to reach $17.9 billion by 2033, growing at a robust CAGR of 28.6% from 2024 to 2033. In terms of volume, the market is expected to hit 4.7 million tons by 2033, with a CAGR of 36.3% over the forecast period.

Why is Ca:P important for hedgehogs?
Hedgehogs need a Ca:P(Calcium to Phosphorus) ratio of 2:1. Most insects are greater in Phosphorus than in Calcium, which is why we gut load them.
BSFL(Black Soldier Fly Larvae, Calci-Worms, Phoenix Worms) is the only insect that has the closest 2:1 ratio without gut loading, with a ratio of 2.5:1. Dubia roaches are the next healthiest after BSFL, with a ratio of 1:3. This is also why we don't recommend mealworms. Mealworms have the highest Phosphorus content of any of the insects, with a ratio of 1:17. See Nutritional Value For Insects for more insect ratios.
If hedgehogs aren't fed enough Calcium and to much Phosphorus it can lead to MBD(Metabolic Bone Disease). MBD is where the bones and teeth are soft, deformed, and easily fractured.
African Pygmy's need 202 – 206 mmol/L of calcium and 1.6 – 2.1 mmol/L of phosphorus. Their wild cousins, the European hedgehogs, need 3.1 mmol/L calcium and 1.5 mmol/L of phosphorus in their blood. -Exotic Animal Medicine, 2015

Miguel Carmona: Driving Circular Economy Sustainably Breeding Black Soldier Fly Larvae for Protein-Rich Animal Feed at ProNuvo in Costa Rica
The Business Magnate. As the entire globe embraces sustainability and integrates its principles into core business models, one vital practice stands out – The Circular Economy. This approach aims at reducing ecological degradation, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, conserving natural resources, and propelling innovations in design and business. By transforming how we produce, consume, and dispose of goods, the Circular Economy contributes significantly to creating and fostering economic, social, and environmental (ESG) benefits, that drive sustainable progress worldwide. In Costa Rica today, fast measures are being taken by the people to become the first Latin American country to go 100% carbon neutral. Among many companies and organizations that are strategically transforming their business models and championing this cause, ProNuvo – a company specializing in Animal Feed Manufacturing in Guápiles, Limón, Costa Rica, is by far setting quite an example.
Tumblr media
Miguel Carmona’s Vision:
Miguel Carmona, ProNuvo’s President previously worked in venture capital before moving to Costa Rica in 2012. Miguel’s vision was to seize opportunities in the potential-filled country and was hence quickly drawn to sustainable aquaculture, where fly larvae were used to produce protein-rich animal feed. Seeing how there was a huge demand for sustainable animal feed solutions in the US, Europe, and Australia, Miguel called his two other brothers Gabriel and Alexandre to Costa Rica, where this venture idea was gradually set into motion.
ProNuvo – An Environmental Friendly and Circular Economy Venture:
In 2017, after four years of preparations and research, Miguel Carmona (President) along with his brothers Gabriel Carmona (CEO) and Alexandre Carmona (CMO), founded ProNuvo. These three businessmen were not your typical set of entrepreneurs running an even more typical family business. Their visions were much far greater than that. The goal with ProNuvo was to create a sustainable business in Costa Rica that adhered to the Circular Economy principles. For this, they started to sustainably breed the country’s native Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) insect to produce protein-rich feed for pets, livestock animals, and fish. “Enhancing Nature’s Model” – as seen at first glance on the company’s website, ProNuvo aims to produce high-quality, sustainable, insect-based products through a Circular Economy principle, thereby fostering climate change mitigations and a sustainable planet.
ProNuvo’s Operations in Costa Rica and Product Offerings:
ProNuvo, a 100% Carbon Neutral Certified company, breeds Costa Rica’s native insect – The Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL). This fly has a lifecycle of around 45 days, where during its larvae phase the maggots are fed processed fruit wastes like banana peels, mango, papaya, and more from nearby plantations and factories. The maggots then rapidly gain almost 10,000 times their original weight! Some of these larvae are then taken and processed organically and chemically free without any adulterants, while the rest of them are left to grow into adulthood, mate, and then die, thereby continuing the cycle.
In 2023, ProNuvo completed constructing its first-ever industrial plant facility and grew closer to achieving its long-term sustainability for the Latin American animal feed industry in Costa Rica.
With innovative and high-end technology equipment the processed larvae are produced into essentially four categories of feed – Whole Dried Larvae Feed (Nuvofeed) containing 46% crude protein for Aquaculture, Birds, Exotic Pets, and Poultry. The second type of animal feed is the Defatted Protein Powder-based Feed (Nuvomeal) containing 58% crude protein for Aquaculture, Pets, and Poultry. The third type of animal feed is Pressed-oil Feed (Nuvooil) containing 68% saturated fats and 32% unsaturated fats for Aquaculture, Pets, and Poultry. The last type of animal feed is obtained from the natural by-product of the Black Soldier Fly Larvae frass or excrement (Nuvosoil) as high-quality fertilizers for plants. ProNuvo’s products are rich in protein, calcium, and fats – all of the required nutrients in food for livestock animals, pets, and fish.
Addressing Environmental Challenges Sustainably at ProNuvo:
Initially just a pilot plant, ProNuvo is now an industrial-scale facility and a pioneer in Latin America. Sustainable development and disruptions are required in the world to address how food must be efficiently produced, consumed, and disposed of. With this, ProNuvo utilizes the BSFL to produce protein-rich feed ideal for fish, livestock animals, and pets to address the environmental challenges of depleting natural resources.
This way with integrated Circular Economy principles, massive amounts of landfill dumps are reduced, greenhouse gas emissions are lowered, and water usage is decreased by tons in the production of this protein-rich feed. ProNuvo’s long-term sustainability initiative is to significantly reduce environmental carbon footprints by transforming organic leftovers or waste produced from nearby fruit processing factories like banana peels, mango, and papaya.
When producing beef protein takes 36 months, 15.4 million liters of water, and 30,000 square meters of land, and soy protein takes 6 months, 1.6 million liters of water, and 3,000 square meters of land, ProNuvo’s Black Soldier Fly Larvae is a far more sustainable option. With a production time of just half a month, it uses only 0.1 million liters of water and 300 square meters of land, making it an environmentally conscious choice.
By addressing global waste management challenges and the conservation of natural resources, ProNuvo’s commitment to environmental sustainability is commendable. “It’s a high-quality protein,” says Miguel Carmona – President of ProNuvo, who has strategically established their industrial plant facility close to Puerto, Limón for better international shipments and exports of ProNuvo’s products.
ProNuvo Today – Partnerships and Investments:
In 2019, ProNuvo became a portfolio company under the EcoEnterprises Fund sharing in vision of sustainable growth, development, and climate mitigation with the Circular economy principles. EcoEnterprises Fund is an organization that invests in companies and business ventures that drive humanity and the planet forward focusing on Latin America and the Caribbean. Along with other investors, EcoEnterprises Fund works closely with ProNuvo in enabling the company to expand their global connections and exports to the US and Europe.
In 2023, the Pomona Impact Fund II invested over $3 million in ProNuvo’s BSFL production, recognizing it as a sustainable and eco-friendly animal feed solution. “We are practicing a sustainable business,” says Miguel. A Costa Rican fishery business has already collaborated and partnered with this animal feed manufacturing firm using its products as sustainable animal feed solutions. Fostering the practice of sustainable farming methods, ProNuvo and its President Miguel alongside other stakeholders and board members, proudly state that – “In Costa Rica, sustainability is not a practice but a way of life,” and through it achieving a “common goal of creating a more sustainable planet”.

Market Drivers:
1.    The black soldier fly market is still in its infancy, with the industry being driven primarily by growing global demand for protein and increasing demand for sustainable livestock feeds. In Europe and North America, as people gradually realize that using green and sustainable food resources is more conducive to environmental protection, the status of the black soldier fly in livestock feed is also increasing.
2.    The EU stipulates that animal proteins prepared from farmed insects can be used as feed ingredients for production animals (except fur animals). So far, only seven species of insects are allowed, including the black soldier fly. In the United States, edible insects are recognized as food additives. But currently, only the dried larvae and insect meal of the black soldier fly can be used as raw materials for animal feed to raise salmon. In Canada, insects have been considered a new feed ingredient, and black soldier fly larvae were authorized for use in chicken feed in 2016. In 2017, black soldier fly larvae were authorized for use in aquaculture, and until 2018, black soldier fly larvae can be used in all poultry farming.
3.    The black soldier fly has been introduced into the Chinese market, and a series of technologically innovative and aggressive companies are growing rapidly. However, at this stage, the number of large-scale participants in the field of black soldier flies in my country is not large, and it has not yet reached the saturated competition stage.

How Black Soldier Fly Can Help Feed the World: A Sustainable Solution
Welcome to the future of sustainable food production. You might be wondering how we can possibly feed a growing population while also preserving our planet's resources. Well, you're in luck because black soldier fly just might hold the answer. Curious? Let's dive in and explore this innovative solution together.
Nutritional Profile of Black Soldier Fly Larvae
The nutritional composition of Black Soldier Fly larvae is amazing! Comparing it to traditional feedstocks like soybean meal, it's obvious these larvae can transform anything into protein and healthy fat. The protein content is a whopping 22-42%, fat 18-34%, fiber 4-12%, lauric acid-rich, high in zinc, magnesium, and calcium.
Plus, Black Soldier Fly larvae have lauric acid with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. All these make them great for animal feed production as an alternative to soybean meal because soybeans are responsible for a significant amount of deforestation. Beef and soy production are driving more than two-thirds of the recorded habitat loss.
Benefits of Black Soldier Fly Larvae as Livestock Feed
Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) as Livestock Feed boasts several advantages. These include reduced land, water, and resource usage. Plus, no antibiotics or pesticides are required. This alternative protein source is nutritious and produces fertilizer, too. It's perfect for poultry, pigs, and fish. BSFL needs minimal space and time to produce large amounts of protein.
Moreover, BSFL can efficiently consume all kinds of organic waste. This makes them a key part of sustainable waste management systems. Their high nutrient content adds to improved animal growth and health. Scientists at a renowned agricultural university compared conventional feed with feed supplemented with BSFL. Animals on the larvae-derived feed exhibited superior growth rates and overall health. This further highlights the potential of using BSFL as a sustainable solution for livestock feed production. Over the last decade, the world has witnessed enormous growth in the aquaculture sector. Nutrition and feeding play a central and essential role in the sustained development of aquaculture. Hence, fertilizers and feed resources continue to dominate aquaculture needs.
In fish farming, nutrition is critical because feed represents 40-50% of the production cost. Fish nutrition has advanced dramatically in recent years by developing new balanced commercial diets that promote optimal fish growth and health. The essential nutrients for fish growth are amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and energy-yielding macronutrients (protein, lipid, and carbohydrate). Further, it is projected that the aquaculture sector will expand to 93 million tons by 2030 (Source: FAO).
BSF larvae contain high amounts of protein (~40%) and have a well-balanced profile of essential amino acids. Therefore, it can be used as an alternative source of protein for fish feed. Owing to these factors, some countries have approved insect-based meals, such as BSFL, for aquafeed applications. Thus, the growing aquaculture industry and government approvals of insects as aquafeed are expected to spur the demand for BSF in the aquaculture industry.
The growth of the global black soldier fly market is increasing mainly due to rising global meat demand. Moreover, an increasing number of health-conscious consumers are demanding environmentally safe and chemical-residue-free meat. Such factors are leading meat producers to adopt insect-derived ingredient feed, such as BSFL protein meals. Furthermore, insects are an inexpensive alternative protein source compared to fish and soy meals for animal feed. Hence, insects contribute high-quality and low-price feed for livestock, poultry, and fish.

However, in some regions, lockdowns were announced to control the pandemic, impacting the movement of vehicles carrying livestock, feed, and feed ingredients. Due to the risk of animal feed, suppliers slowed their production or closing altogether. Farmers were concerned they may need to slow or stop slaughterhouse operations and keep their animals for longer due to lower demand, requiring them to use more feed than usual. Even delivery trucks were difficult to procure. These factors led to livestock farms building up two-week supplies of feed when normally they might only keep enough for one or two days. For example, Purina Animal Nutrition LLC, which uses black soldier fly as a feed ingredient, has seen a slight increase in its livestock business sales. In addition, Cargill had seen its global feed sales volume grow by 10% or more in March 2020.
