Leo Pietro's 10 Essential Films
For the numerous films that I've watched in my life, diverse, and rich with different stories. Of course there are some that stayed with me and I wouldn't forget. Here are 10 of this silver screen masterpieces.
1. The Godfather (1972) dir. Francis Ford Coppola
The first film in Francis Ford Coppola's crime trilogy about the story of a family in the strings of the Italian Mafia, the Corleone family. Everything about this films style is perfect the soundtrack, use of lighting, cinematography and editing. Especially the climactic basptism scene with the juxtaposition of Michael Corleones turning into The Godfather.
2. The Shawshank Redemption (1994) dir. Frank Darabont
There's no other acting duo like the one shown here with Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins. The film shows the hard times of being in prison and also the good things in life like friendship, dreams, going through hardships, this film will move you, it will give you hope in life.
3. Maynila, sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag (1975) dir. Lino Brocka
One of the best filipino films that I've seen. It is Lino Brocka's masterpiece about having hope in love in spite of being knocked up in the hands of poverty, it shows a lot about our society especially on the unseen condition of filipinos under the Marcos regime.
5. Taxi Driver (1976) dir. Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese's film about a disturbed cab driver destroyed by society, Travis Bickle. De Niro's incredible method acting shown here at full force. Watch as this unusual hero cleans the scum of New York City.
4. Full Metal Jacket (1987) dir. Stanley Kubrick
The duality of man, as you can see in the photo with Private Davis' wearing a peace sign but a "Born to Kill" inscription is on his helmet Stanley Kubrick's two-part masterpiece that shows us the horrors of the war in Vietnam. The drill sergeant in the film is unforgettable though.
7. Perfumed Nightmare (1977) dir. Kidlat Tahimik
Now this is a really personal film for me as it's filmed in my hometown. It's directed by National Artist for film, a pioneer of Philippine Independent Cinema and Third World Cinema Movement, "Kidlat Tahimik". It shows a filipino jeepney driver dream of being in the space program, a facade of our contry's neo-colonialism.
8. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) dir. Wes Anderson
Nothing screams visual treatment as Wes Anderson's films, with his symmetrical camera framing and use of pallete color scheme. A story of a lobby boy in the said hotel getting tangled up in a crisis of a dead old woman and a painting of a boy with an apple.
6. Pulp Fiction (1994) dir. Quentin Tarantino
Now here's a really influential film for me, it's non-linear storyline will surely blow your mind. And Tarantino's use of action, campy style, and dialogue is everything perfect about this film. The connection of the characters are just great. Oh man this film really is just like a royale with cheese.
9. Schindler's List (1993) dir. Steven Spielberg
Now here's another film that shows the horrors of war, this time it's the holocaust of Nazi Germany against jews. It's one of the few films that brings a tear into my eyes. It's without doubt a life changing experience.
10. Spirited Away (2001) dir. Hayao Miyazaki
The story of Chihiro being in the a different world unnatural to her, a journey of making friends. It's my favourite animated film of all timr brought to us by the genius mind of Mr. Hayao Miyazaki. It's mythical, fantastic, and unlike any other film. This is a work of art and will also surely change your life.

It's the band's dynamic production and simple lyrics that make this band as big as ever in the scene. Almost all of their tracks all sounds wondrous. Journey through time.
“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots. - Marcus Garvey”
January 11, 2019 - it will be the first time that I'll go to the national museums of our country, three museums to be exact, the national museum of natural history, anthropology and of fine arts. And heck am I so excited for the day.
I woke up early and ready to go to Manila, in the claws of light hahaha just kidding. I rode the bus from Laguna on the way to the Metro. I climbed aboard the Light Rail Transit (LRT) from Gil Puyat Station to UN Avenue Station. I ate some lunch first and I'm ready to go and travel through time.
It's just a few brisk of walking to my first destination and the blazing heat is already scorching the soul out of me. First depot, the museum of Natural History and at first sight of it's exterior architecture I'm already astounded, well all of them are. But at the time I saw the interior I was breathless of it. My adventure on the musem is making the nature lover inside of me to scream in joy. Different animal habitats and places, all incredibly exhibited. Skeletons and taxidermys of a wide plethora of animals inside. I just realized the beauty of our nature.
Next on my destination, the museum of anthropology it started with the exhibits starting from our pre-colonial times of the Ivory age to the times where we became a hispanic colony. Artifacts and the culture of the people from a distant past. It is really great to see at first hand the famous Manunggul Jar and I just realized one thing from this exhibits, we really like jars right? Before I go out I attended a free workshop on embroidery inside the museum.
Final place on my whereabouts and I'm really excited for this one. The museum of fine arts! And oh wow the first thing that caught my eyes it's Juan Luna's masterpiece the life-size Spoliarium. My heart is trembling upon seeing it with my very own eyes. I sat there for a while and got started to venture this big museum. It comprises of artworks of the colonial times, portraits of different Filipinos, historical figures, and presidents, artworks about the world war and EDSA Revolution and some postmodernist works by different Filipino national artist awardees. I also love the gargantuan mural by Carlos "Botong" Francisco with stills of different stills of event of our nations history. This really is a journey through time.
Dusk has come and it's time to go back home. It's the usual hectic commuting in the Metropolitan gridlock but I'm not feeling enraged, for the joy I'm feeling from going to this museums is already one of the highest point in my life. I watched the sunset, condescending about our country, on how I will love it until the day I die. Padayon, Pilipinas!
